A Serre-Swan Theorem for Coisotropic Algebras

Coisotropic algebras are used to formalize coisotropic reduction in Poisson geometry as well as in deformation quantization and find applications in various other fields as well. In this paper we prove a Serre-Swan Theorem relating the regular projective modules over the coisotropic algebra built out of a manifold $M$, a submanifold $C$ and an integrable smooth distribution $D \subseteq TC$ with vector bundles over this geometric situation and show an equivalence of categories for the case of a simple distribution.

BRST Reduction of Quantum Algebras with $^*$-Involutions

In this paper we investigate the compatibility of the BRST reduction procedure with the Hermiticity of star products. First, we introduce the generalized notion of abstract BRST algebras with corresponding involutions. In this setting we define adjoint BRST differentials and as a consequence one gets new BRST quotients. Passing to the quantum BRST setting we show that for compact Lie groups the new quantum BRST quotient and the quantum BRST cohomology are isomorphic in zero degree implying that reduction is compatible with Hermiticity.

Deformation and Hochschild Cohomology of Coisotropic Algebras

Coisotropic algebras consist of triples of algebras for which a reduction can be defined and unify in a very algebraic fashion coisotropic reduction in several settings. In this paper we study the theory of (formal) deformation of coisotropic algebras showing that deformations are governed by suitable coisotropic DGLAs. We define a deformation functor and prove that it commutes with reduction. Finally, we study the obstructions to existence and uniqueness of coisotropic algebras and present some geometric examples.

Morita equivalence of formal Poisson structures

We extend the notion of Morita equivalence of Poisson manifolds to the setting of {\em formal} Poisson structures, i.e., formal power series of bivector fields $π=π_0 + λπ_1 +\cdots$ satisfying the Poisson integrability condition $[π,π]=0$. Our main result gives a complete description of Morita equivalent formal Poisson structures deforming the zero structure ($π_0=0$) in terms of $B$-field transformations, relying on a general study of formal deformations of Poisson morphisms and dual pairs. Combined with previous work on Morita equivalence of star products, our results link the notions of Morita equivalence in Poisson geometry and noncommutative algebra via deformation quantization.

Nuclear Group Algebras for Finitely Generated Groups

We study completions of the group algebra of a finitely generated group and relate nuclearity of such a completion to growth properties of the group. This extends previous work of Jolissaint on nuclearity of rapidly decreasing functions on a finitely generated group to more general weights than polynomial decrease. The new group algebras and their duals are studied in detail and compared to other approaches. As application we discuss the convergence of the complete growth function introduced by Grigorchuk and Nagnibeda.

Classification of Equivariant Star Products on Symplectic Manifolds

In this note we classify invariant star products with quantum momentum maps on symplectic manifolds by means of an equivariant characteristic class taking values in the equivariant cohomology. We establish a bijection between the equivalence classes and the formal series in the second equivariant cohomology, thereby giving a refined classification which takes into account the quantum momentum map as well.

Recent developments in deformation quantization

In this review an overview on some recent developments in deformation quantization is given. After a general historical overview we motivate the basic definitions of star products and their equivalences both from a mathematical and a physical point of view. Then we focus on two topics: the Morita classification of star product algebras and convergence issues which lead to the nuclear Weyl algebra.

A Nuclear Weyl Algebra

A bilinear form on a possibly graded vector space $V$ defines a graded Poisson structure on its graded symmetric algebra together with a star product quantizing it. This gives a model for the Weyl algebra in an algebraic framework, only requiring a field of characteristic zero. When passing to $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ one wants to add more: the convergence of the star product should be controlled for a large completion of the symmetric algebra. Assuming that the underlying vector space carries a locally convex topology and the bilinear form is continuous, we establish a locally convex topology on the Weyl algebra such that the star product becomes continuous. We show that the completion contains many interesting functions like exponentials. The star product is shown to converge absolutely and provides an entire deformation. We show that the completion has an absolute Schauder basis whenever $V$ has an absolute Schauder basis. Moreover, the Weyl algebra is nuclear iff $V$ is nuclear. We discuss functoriality, translational symmetries, and equivalences of the construction. As an example, we show how the Peierls bracket in classical field theory on a globally hyperbolic spacetime can be used to obtain a local net of Weyl algebras.

Fréchet algebraic deformation quantization of the Poincaré disk

Starting from formal deformation quantization we use an explicit formula for a star product on the Poincaré disk D_n to introduce a Fréchet topology making the star product continuous. To this end a general construction of locally convex topologies on algebras with countable vector space basis is introduced and applied. Several examples of independent interest are investigated as e.g. group algebras over finitely generated groups and infinite matrices. In the case of the star product on D_n the resulting Fréchet algebra is shown to have many nice features: it is a strongly nuclear Köthe space, the symmetry group SU(1, n) acts smoothly by continuous automorphisms with an inner infinitesimal action, and evaluation functionals at all points of D_n are continuous positive functionals.

Geometric Wave Equations

In these lecture notes we discuss the solution theory of geometric wave equations as they arise in Lorentzian geometry: for a normally hyperbolic differential operator the existence and uniqueness properties of Green functions and Green operators is discussed including a detailed treatment of the Cauchy problem on a globally hyperbolic manifold both for the smooth and finite order setting. As application, the classical Poisson algebra of polynomial functions on the initial values and the dynamical Poisson algebra coming from the wave equation are related. The text contains an introduction to the theory of distributions on manifolds as well as detailed proofs.

Strict deformation quantization of locally convex algebras and modules

In this work various symbol spaces with values in a sequentially complete locally convex vector space are introduced and discussed. They are used to define vector-valued oscillatory integrals which allow to extend Rieffel's strict deformation quantization to the framework of sequentially complete locally convex algebras and modules with separately continuous products and module structures, making use of polynomially bounded actions of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Several well-known integral formulas for star products are shown to fit into this general setting, and a new class of examples involving compactly supported $\mathbb{R}^n$-actions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ is constructed.

Classification of Invariant Star Products up to Equivariant Morita Equivalence on Symplectic Manifolds

In this paper we investigate equivariant Morita theory for algebras with momentum maps and compute the equivariant Picard groupoid in terms of the Picard groupoid explicitly. We consider three types of Morita theory: ring-theoretic equivalence, *-equivalence and strong equivalence. Then we apply these general considerations to star product algebras over symplectic manifolds with a Lie algebra symmetry. We obtain the full classification up to equivariant Morita equivalence.

Morita Theory in Deformation Quantization

Various aspects of Morita theory of deformed algebras and in particular of star product algebras on general Poisson manifolds are discussed. We relate the three flavours ring-theoretic Morita equivalence, $^*$-Morita equivalence, and strong Morita equivalence and exemplify their properties for star product algebras. The complete classification of Morita equivalent star products on general Poisson manifolds is discussed as well as the complete classification of covariantly Morita equivalent star products on a symplectic manifold with respect to some Lie algebra action preserving a connection.

BRST Cohomology and Phase Space Reduction in Deformation Quantisation

In this article we consider quantum phase space reduction when zero is a regular value of the momentum map. By analogy with the classical case we define the BRST cohomology in the framework of deformation quantization. We compute the quantum BRST cohomology in terms of a `quantum' Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of the Lie algebra on the constraint surface. To prove this result, we construct an explicit chain homotopy, both in the classical and quantum case, which is constructed out of a prolongation of functions on the constraint surface. We have observed the phenomenon that the quantum BRST cohomology cannot always be used for quantum reduction, because generally its zero part is no longer a deformation of the space of all smooth functions on the reduced phase space. But in case the group action is `sufficiently nice', e.g. proper (which is the case for all compact Lie group actions), it is shown for a strongly invariant star product that the BRST procedure always induces a star product on the reduced phase space in a rather explicit and natural way. Simple examples and counter examples are discussed.
