Invariant Hyperplane Sections of Vector Fields on the Product of Spheres

Let $S_{p,q}$ be the hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{p+q+1}$ defined by the following: $$ S_{p,q} := \left\lbrace (x_1,\ldots,x_{p+1},x_{p+2},\ldots,x_{p+q+1}) \in \mathbb{R}^{p+q+1} \big| \left( \sum_{i=1}^{p+1} x_i^2 - a^2 \right)^2 + \sum_{j=p+2}^{p+q+1} x_j^2 = 1 \right\rbrace,$$ where $a > 1$. We show that $S_{p,q}$ is homeomorphic to the product $S^p \times S^q$. We classify all degree one and two polynomial vector fields on $S_{p,q}$. We consider the polynomial vector field $\mathcal{X} = (R_1,...,R_{p+1},R_{p+2},...,R_{p+q+1})$ in $\mathbb{R}^{p+q+1}$ which keeps $S_{p,q}$ invariant. Then we study the number of certain invariant algebraic subsets of $S_{p,q}$ for the vector field $\mathcal{X}$ if either $p>1$ or $q>1$.

Determination of the transverse width and distance of an object with a smartphone camera

A smartphone is a powerful learning aid in the hands of a large section of students around the world. The camera of the phone can be used for several learning purposes apart from its obvious purpose of photographing. If the focal length of the lens of the camera can be determined, several experiments in optics can be performed with it. In some recent works, the method of determination of the focal length has been discussed. When a real image of an object is formed by a lens of known focal length, one can determine either the distance or the transverse magnification of the object if the other is known. In this work we have shown that we can determine both the transverse size and the distance of an object, by photographing it from two positions, separated by a distance along the line of sight of the camera.

Integral generalized equivariant cohomologies of weighted Grassmann orbifolds

We introduce a new definition of weighted Grassmann orbifolds. We study their several invariant $q$-cell structures and the orbifold singularities on these $q$-cells. We discuss when the integral cohomology of a weighted Grassmann orbifold has no $p$-torsion. We compute the equivariant $K$-theory ring of weighted Grassmann orbifolds with rational coefficients. We introduce divisive weighted Grassmann orbifolds and show that they have invariant cell structures. We calculate the equivariant cohomology ring, equivariant $K$-theory ring and equivariant cobordism ring of a divisive weighted Grassmann orbifold with integer coefficients. We discuss how to compute the weighted structure constants for the integral equivariant cohomology ring of a divisive weighted Grassmann orbifold.

Resolution of singularities of toric orbifolds and equivariant cobordism of contact toric manifolds

Toric orbifolds are a generalization of simplicial projective toric varieties. In this paper, we show that there is a resolution of singularities of a toric orbifold. In a different category, the class of quasi-contact toric manifolds contains the class of good contact toric manifolds. We prove that a quasi-contact toric manifold is equivariantly a boundary. Moreover, we conclude that good contact toric manifolds and generalized lens spaces are equivariantly boundaries.

Equivariant cohomological rigidity of certain $T$-manifolds

We introduce the category of {\it locally $k$-standard $T$-manifolds} which includes well-known classes of manifolds such as toric and quasitoric manifolds, good contact toric manifolds and moment-angle manifolds. They are smooth manifolds with well-behaved actions of tori. We study their topological properties, such as fundamental groups and equivariant cohomology algebras. Then, we discuss when the torus equivariant cohomology algebra distinguishes them up to weakly equivariant homeomorphism.

A new construction of lens spaces

Let $T^n$ be the real $n$-torus group. We give a new definition of lens spaces and study the diffeomorphic classification of lens spaces. We show that any $3$-dimensional lens space $L(p; q)$ is $T^2$-equivariantly cobordant to zero. We also give some sufficient conditions for higher dimensional lens spaces $L(p; q_1, \ldots, q_n)$ to be $T^{n+1}$-equivariantly cobordant to zero. In 2005, B. Hanke showed that complex equivariant cobordism class of a lens space is trivial. Nevertheless, our proofs are constructive using toric topological arguments.

Orientability and equivariant oriented cobordism of 2-torus manifolds

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the orientability of a locally standard 2-torus manifold with a fixed point which generalizes previous results of Nakayama-Nishimura in 2005 and Soprunova-Sottile in 2013. We construct manifolds with boundary where the boundary is a disjoint union of locally standard 2-torus manifolds. We discuss equivariant oriented cobordism class of locally standard 2-torus manifolds.

Equilibrium triangulations of some quasitoric 4-manifolds

Quasitoric manifolds, introduced by M. Davis and T. Januskiewicz in 1991, are topological generalizations of smooth complex projective spaces. In 1992, Banchoff and Kühnel constructed a 10-vertex equilibrium triangulations of $\CP^2$. We generalize this construction for quasitoric manifolds and construct some equilibrium triangulations of $4$-dimensional quasitoric manifolds. In some cases, our constructions give vertex minimal equilibrium triangulations.

Equilibrium and equivariant triangulations of some small covers with minimum number of vertices

Small covers were introduced by Davis and Januszkiewicz in 1991. We introduce the notion of equilibrium triangulations for small covers. We study equilibrium and vertex minimal $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-equivariant triangulations of $2$-dimensional small covers. We discuss vertex minimal equilibrium triangulations of $\mathbb{RP}^3 \# \mathbb{RP}^3$, $S^1 \times \mathbb{RP}^2$ and a nontrivial $S^1$ bundle over $\mathbb{RP}^2$. We construct some nice equilibrium triangulations of the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^n$ with $2^n +n+1$ vertices. The main tool is the theory of small covers.

On Quasitoric Orbifolds

Quasitoric spaces were introduced by Davis and Januskiewicz in their 1991 Duke paper. There they extensively studied topological invariants of quasitoric manifolds. These manifolds are generalizations or topological counterparts of nonsingular projective toric varieties. In this article we study structures and invariants of quasitoric orbifolds. In particular, we discuss equivalent definitions and determine the orbifold fundamental group, rational homology groups and cohomology ring of a quasitoric orbifold. We determine whether any quasitoric orbifold can be the quotient of a smooth manifold by a finite group action or not. We prove existence of stable almost complex structure and describe the Chen-Ruan cohomology groups of an almost complex quasitoric orbifold.
