Constructions of dd-spheres from (d−1)(d-1)-spheres and dd-balls with same set of vertices

Given a combinatorial (d−1)(d-1)-sphere SS, to construct a combinatorial dd-sphere S′S^{\hspace{.2mm}\prime} containing SS, one usually needs some more vertices. Here we consider the question whether we can do one such construction without the help of any additional vertices. We show that this question has affirmative answer when SS is a flag sphere, a stacked sphere or a join of spheres. We also consider the question whether we can construct an nn-vertex combinatorial dd-sphere containing a given nn-vertex combinatorial dd-ball.

Vertex-transitive covers of semi-equivelar toroidal maps

A map XX on a surface is called vertex-transitive if the automorphism group of XX acts transitively on the set of vertices of XX. If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map are of same type then the map is called semi-equivelar. In general, semi-equivelar maps on a surface form a bigger class than vertex-transitive maps. There are semi-equivelar toroidal maps which are not vertex-transitive. In this article, we show that semi-equivelar toroidal maps are quotients of vertex-transitive toroidal maps. More explicitly, we prove that each semi-equivelar toroidal map has a finite vertex-transitive cover. In 2019, Drach {\em et al.} have shown that each vertex-transitive toroidal map has a minimal almost regular cover. Therefore, semi-equivelar toroidal maps are quotients of almost regular toroidal maps.

Minimal contact triangulations of 3-manifolds

In this paper, we explore minimal contact triangulations on contact 3-manifolds. We give many explicit examples of contact triangulations that are close to minimal ones. The main results of this article say that on any closed oriented 3-manifold the number of vertices for minimal contact triangulations for overtwisted contact structures grows at most linearly with respect to the relative d3d^3 invariant. We conjecture that this bound is optimal. We also discuss, in great details, contact triangulations for a certain family of overtwisted contact structures on 3-torus.

On stacked triangulated manifolds

We prove two results on stacked triangulated manifolds in this paper: (a) every stacked triangulation of a connected manifold with or without boundary is obtained from a simplex or the boundary of a simplex by certain combinatorial operations; (b) in dimension d≥4d \geq 4, if ΔΔ is a tight connected closed homology dd-manifold whose iith homology vanishes for 1<i<d−11 < i < d-1, then ΔΔ is a stacked triangulation of a manifold. These results give affirmative answers to questions posed by Novik and Swartz and by Effenberger.

Equilibrium triangulations of some quasitoric 4-manifolds

Quasitoric manifolds, introduced by M. Davis and T. Januskiewicz in 1991, are topological generalizations of smooth complex projective spaces. In 1992, Banchoff and Kühnel constructed a 10-vertex equilibrium triangulations of $\CP^2$. We generalize this construction for quasitoric manifolds and construct some equilibrium triangulations of 44-dimensional quasitoric manifolds. In some cases, our constructions give vertex minimal equilibrium triangulations.

Tight and stacked triangulations of manifolds

Tight triangulated manifolds are generalisations of neighborly triangulations of closed surfaces and are interesting objects in Combinatorial Topology. Tight triangulated manifolds are conjectured to be minimal. Except few, all the known tight triangulated manifolds are stacked. It is known that locally stacked tight triangulated manifolds are strongly minimal. Except for three infinite series and neighborly surfaces, very few tight triangulated manifolds are known. From some recent works, we know more on tight triangulation. In this article, we present a survey on the works done on tight triangulation. In Section 2, we state some known results on tight triangulations. In Section 3, we present all the known tight triangulated manifolds. Details are available in the references mentioned there. In Section 1, we present some essential definitions.

An infinite family of tight triangulations of manifolds

We give an explicit construction of vertex-transitive tight triangulations of dd-manifolds for d≥2d\geq 2. More explicitly, for each d≥2d\geq 2, we construct two (d2+5d+5)(d^2+5d+5)-vertex neighborly triangulated dd-manifolds whose vertex-links are stacked spheres. The only other non-trivial series of such tight triangulated manifolds currently known is the series of non-simply connected triangulated dd-manifolds with 2d+32d+3 vertices constructed by Kühnel. The manifolds we construct are strongly minimal. For d≥3d\geq 3, they are also tight neighborly as defined by Lutz, Sulanke and Swartz. Like Kühnel's complexes, our manifolds are orientable in even dimensions and non-orientable in odd dimensions.

Minimal crystallizations of 3-manifolds

We have introduced the weight of a group which has a presentation with number of relations is at most the number of generators. We have shown that the number of facets of any contracted pseudotriangulation of a connected closed 3-manifold MM is at least the weight of π(M,∗)π(M, \ast). This lower bound is sharp for the 3-manifolds RP3\mathbb{R P}^3, L(3,1)L(3,1), L(5,2)L(5,2), S1×S1×S1S^1\times S^1 \times S^1, S2×S1S^2 \times S^1, $S^2 \mbox{$\times \hspace{-2.8mm}_{-}$} S^1$ and S3/Q8S^3/Q_8, where Q8Q_8 is the quaternion group. Moreover, there is a unique such facet minimal pseudotriangulation in each of these seven cases. We have also constructed contracted pseudotriangulations of L(kq−1,q)L(kq-1,q) with 4(q+k−1)4(q+k-1) facets for q≥3q \geq 3, k≥2k \geq 2 and L(kq+1,q)L(kq+1,q) with 4(q+k)4(q+k) facets for q≥4q\geq 4, k≥1k\geq 1. By a recent result of Swartz, our pseudotriangulations of L(kq+1,q)L(kq+1, q) are facet minimal when kq+1kq+1 are even. In 1979, Gagliardi found presentations of the fundamental group of a manifold MM in terms of a contracted pseudotriangulation of MM. Our construction is the converse of this, namely, given a presentation of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold MM, we construct a contracted pseudotriangulation of MM. So, our construction of a contracted pseudotriangulation of a 3-manifold MM is based on a presentation of the fundamental group of MM and it is computer-free.

On kk-stellated and kk-stacked spheres

We introduce the class Σk(d)Σ_k(d) of kk-stellated (combinatorial) spheres of dimension dd (0≤k≤d+10 \leq k \leq d + 1) and compare and contrast it with the class Sk(d){\cal S}_k(d) (0≤k≤d0 \leq k \leq d) of kk-stacked homology dd-spheres. We have Σ1(d)=S1(d)Σ_1(d) = {\cal S}_1(d), and Σk(d)⊆Sk(d)Σ_k(d) \subseteq {\cal S}_k(d) for d≥2k−1d \geq 2k - 1. However, for each k≥2k \geq 2 there are kk-stacked spheres which are not kk-stellated. The existence of kk-stellated spheres which are not kk-stacked remains an open question. We also consider the class Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d) (and Kk(d){\cal K}_k(d)) of simplicial complexes all whose vertex-links belong to Σk(d−1)Σ_k(d - 1) (respectively, Sk(d−1){\cal S}_k(d - 1)). Thus, Wk(d)⊆Kk(d){\cal W}_k(d) \subseteq {\cal K}_k(d) for d≥2kd \geq 2k, while W1(d)=K1(d){\cal W}_1(d) = {\cal K}_1(d). Let Kˉk(d)\bar{\cal K}_k(d) denote the class of dd-dimensional complexes all whose vertex-links are kk-stacked balls. We show that for d≥2k+2d\geq 2k + 2, there is a natural bijection M↦MˉM \mapsto \bar{M} from Kk(d){\cal K}_k(d) onto Kˉk(d+1)\bar{\cal K}_k(d + 1) which is the inverse to the boundary map ∂ ⁣:Kˉk(d+1)→Kk(d)\partial \colon \bar{\cal K}_k(d + 1) \to {\cal K}_k(d).

On stellated spheres and a tightness criterion for combinatorial manifolds

We introduce the kk-stellated spheres and consider the class Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d) of triangulated dd-manifolds all whose vertex links are kk-stellated, and its subclass Wk∗(d){\cal W}^{\ast}_k(d) consisting of the (k+1)(k+1)-neighbourly members of Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d). We introduce the mu-vector of any simplicial complex and show that, in the case of 2-neighbourly simplicial complexes, the mu-vector dominates the vector of its Betti numbers componentwise; the two vectors are equal precisely for tight simplicial complexes. We are able to estimate/compute certain alternating sums of the components of the mu-vector of any 2-neighbourly member of Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d) for d≥2kd\geq 2k. As one consequence of this theory, we prove a lower bound theorem for such triangulated manifolds, as well as determine the integral homology type of members of Wk∗(d){\cal W}^{\ast}_k(d) for d≥2k+2d \geq 2k+2. As another application, we prove that, when d≠2k+1d \neq 2k+1, all members of Wk∗(d){\cal W}^{\ast}_k(d) are tight. We also characterize the tight members of Wk∗(2k+1){\cal W}^{\ast}_k(2k + 1) in terms of their kthk^{\rm th} Betti numbers. These results more or less answer a recent question of Effenberger, and also provide a uniform and conceptual tightness proof for all except two of the known tight triangulated manifolds. We also prove a lower bound theorem for triangulated manifolds in which the members of W1(d){\cal W}_1(d) provide the equality case. This generalises a result (the d=4d=4 case) due to Walkup and Kuehnel. As a consequence, it is shown that every tight member of W1(d){\cal W}_1(d) is strongly minimal, thus providing substantial evidence in favour of a conjecture of Kuehnel and Lutz asserting that tight triangulated manifolds should be strongly minimal.

Combinatorial triangulations of homology spheres

Let MM be an nn-vertex combinatorial triangulation of a $\ZZ_2$-homology dd-sphere. In this paper we prove that if n≤d+8n \leq d + 8 then MM must be a combinatorial sphere. Further, if n=d+9n = d + 9 and MM is not a combinatorial sphere then MM can not admit any proper bistellar move. Existence of a 12-vertex triangulation of the lens space L(3,1)L(3, 1) shows that the first result is sharp in dimension three. In the course of the proof we also show that any $\ZZ_2$-acyclic simplicial complex on ≤7\leq 7 vertices is necessarily collapsible. This result is best possible since there exist 8-vertex triangulations of the Dunce Hat which are not collapsible.

On polytopal upper bound spheres

Generalizing a result (the case k=1k = 1) due to M. A. Perles, we show that any polytopal upper bound sphere of odd dimension 2k+12k + 1 belongs to the generalized Walkup class Kk(2k+1){\cal K}_k(2k + 1), i.e., all its vertex links are kk-stacked spheres. This is surprising since the kk-stacked spheres minimize the face-vector (among all polytopal spheres with given f0,...,fk−1f_0,..., f_{k - 1}) while the upper bound spheres maximize the face vector (among spheres with a given f0f_0). It has been conjectured that for d≠2k+1d\neq 2k + 1, all (k+1)(k + 1)-neighborly members of the class Kk(d){\cal K}_k(d) are tight. The result of this paper shows that, for every kk, the case d=2k+1d = 2k +1 is a true exception to this conjecture.

On stellated spheres, shellable balls, lower bounds and a combinatorial criterion for tightness

We introduce the kk-stellated spheres and compare and contrast them with kk-stacked spheres. It is shown that for d≥2kd \geq 2k, any kk-stellated sphere of dimension dd bounds a unique and canonically defined kk-stacked ball. In parallel, any kk-stacked polytopal sphere of dimension d≥2kd\geq 2k bounds a unique and canonically defined kk-stacked ball. We consider the class Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d) of combinatorial dd-manifolds with kk-stellated links. For d≥2k+2d\geq 2k+2, any member of Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d) bounds a unique and canonically defined "kk-stacked" (d+1)(d+1)-manifold. We introduce the mu-vector of simplicial complexes, and show that the mu-vector of any 2-neighbourly simplicial complex dominates its vector of Betti numbers componentwise, and the two vectors are equal precisely when the complex is tight. When d≥2kd\geq 2k, we are able to estimate/compute certain alternating sums of the mu-numbers of any 2-neighbourly member of Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d). This leads to a lower bound theorem for such triangulated manifolds. As an application, it is shown that any (k+1)(k+1)-neighbourly member of Wk(d){\cal W}_k(d) is tight, subject only to an extra condition on the kthk^{th} Betti number in case d=2k+1d=2k+1. This result more or less settles a recent conjecture of Effenberger, and it also provides a uniform and conceptual tightness proof for all the known tight triangulated manifolds, with only two exceptions. It is shown that any polytopal upper bound sphere of odd dimension 2k+12k+1 belongs to the class Wk(2k+1){\cal W}_k(2k+1), thus generalizing a theorem due to Perles. This shows that the case d=2k+1d=2k+1 is indeed exceptional for the tightness theorem.

Tight triangulations of some 4-manifolds

Walkup's class K(d){\cal K}(d) consists of the dd-dimensional simplicial complexes all whose vertex links are stacked (d−1)(d-1)-spheres. According to a result of Walkup, the face vector of any triangulated 4-manifold XX with Euler characteristic χχ satisfies f1≥5f0−15/2χf_1 \geq 5f_0 - 15/2 χ, with equality only for X∈K(4)X \in {\cal K}(4). Kühnel observed that this implies f0(f0−11)≥−15χf_0(f_0 - 11) \geq -15χ, with equality only for 2-neighborly members of K(4){\cal K}(4). For n=6,11n = 6, 11 and 15, there are triangulated 4-manifolds with f0=nf_0=n and f0(f0−11)=−15χf_0(f_0 - 11) = -15χ. In this article, we present triangulated 4-manifolds with f0=21,26f_0 = 21, 26 and 41 which satisfy f0(f0−11)=−15χf_0(f_0 - 11) = -15χ. All these triangulated manifolds are tight and strongly minimal.

On Walkup's class K(d){\cal K}(d) and a minimal triangulation of $(S^3 \times \rotatebox{90}{\ltimes} S^1)^{\#3}$

For d≥2d \geq 2, Walkup's class K(d){\cal K}(d) consists of the dd-dimensional simplicial complexes all whose vertex-links are stacked (d−1)(d-1)-spheres. Kalai showed that for d≥4d \geq 4, all connected members of K(d){\cal K}(d) are obtained from stacked dd-spheres by finitely many elementary handle additions. According to a result of Walkup, the face vector of any triangulated 4-manifold XX with Euler characteristic χχ satisfies f1≥5f0−15/2χf_1 \geq 5f_0 - {15/2} χ, with equality only for X∈K(4)X \in {\cal K}(4). Kühnel observed that this implies f0(f0−11)≥−15χf_0(f_0 - 11) \geq -15χ, with equality only for 2-neighborly members of K(4){\cal K}(4). Kühnel also asked if there is a triangulated 4-manifold with f0=15f_0 = 15, χ=−4χ= -4 (attaining equality in his lower bound). In this paper, guided by Kalai's theorem, we show that indeed there is such a triangulation. It triangulates the connected sum of three copies of the twisted sphere product S3×−2.8mm−S1S^3 \times {-2.8mm}_{-} S^1. Because of Kühnel's inequality, the given triangulation of this manifold is a vertex-minimal triangulation. By a recent result of Effenberger, the triangulation constructed here is tight. Apart from the neighborly 2-manifolds and the infinite family of (2d+3)(2d+ 3)-vertex sphere products Sd−1×S1S^{d-1} \times S^1 (twisted for dd odd), only fourteen tight triangulated manifolds were known so far. The present construction yields a new member of this sporadic family. We also present a self-contained proof of Kalai's result.

A triangulation of $\CC P^3$ as symmetric cube of S2S^2

The symmetric group S3S_3 acts on S2×S2×S2S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2 by coordinate permutation, and the quotient space (S2×S2×S2)/S3(S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2)/S_3 is homeomorphic to the complex projective space $\CC P^3$. In this paper, we construct an 124-vertex simplicial subdivision (S2×S2×S2)124(S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2)_{124} of the 64-vertex standard cellulation S42×S42×S42S^2_4 \times S^2_4 \times S^2_4 of S2×S2×S2S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2, such that the S3S_3-action on this cellulation naturally extends to an action on (S2×S2×S2)124(S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2)_{124}. Further, the S3S_3-action on (S2×S2×S2)124(S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2)_{124} is "good", so that the quotient simplicial complex (S2×S2×S2)124/S3(S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2)_{124}/S_3 is a 30-vertex triangulation $\CC P^3_{30}$ of $\CC P^3$. In other words, we construct a simplicial realization $(S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2)_{124} \to \CC P^3_{30}$ of the branched covering $S^2 \times S^2 \times S^2 \to \CC P^3$. Finally, we apply the BISTELLAR program of Lutz on $\CC P^3_{30}$, resulting in an 18-vertex 2-neighbourly triangulation $\CC P^3_{18}$ of $\CC P^3$. The automorphism group of $\CC P^3_{18}$ is trivial. It may be recalled that, by a result of Arnoux and Marin, any triangulation of $\CC P^3$ requires at least 17 vertices. So, $\CC P^3_{18}$ is close to vertex-minimal, if not actually vertex-minimal. Moreover, no explicit triangulation of $\CC P^3$ was known so far.

From the icosahedron to natural triangulations of $\CC P^2$ and S2×S2S^2 \times S^2

We present two constructions in this paper: (a) A 10-vertex triangulation $\CC P^{2}_{10}$ of the complex projective plane $\CC P^{2}$ as a subcomplex of the join of the standard sphere (S42S^{2}_4) and the standard real projective plane ($\RR P^{2}_{6}$, the decahedron), its automorphism group is A4A_4; (b) a 12-vertex triangulation (S2×S2)12(S^{2} \times S^{2})_{12} of S2×S2S^{2} \times S^{2} with automorphism group 2S52S_5, the Schur double cover of the symmetric group S5S_5. It is obtained by generalized bistellar moves from a simplicial subdivision of the standard cell structure of S2×S2S^{2} \times S^{2}. Both constructions have surprising and intimate relationships with the icosahedron. It is well known that $\CC P^{2}$ has S2×S2S^{2} \times S^{2} as a two-fold branched cover; we construct the triangulation $\CC P^{2}_{10}$ of $\CC P^{2}$ by presenting a simplicial realization of this covering map $S^{2} \times S^{2} \to \CC P^{2}$. The domain of this simplicial map is a simplicial subdivision of the standard cell structure of S2×S2S^{2} \times S^{2}, different from the triangulation alluded to in (b). This gives a new proof that Kuehnel's $\CC P^{2}_{9}$ triangulates $\CC P^{2}$. It is also shown that $\CC P^{2}_{10}$ and (S2×S2)12(S^{2} \times S^{2})_{12} induce the standard piecewise linear structure on $\CC P^{2}$ and S2×S2S^{2} \times S^{2} respectively.
