Pre-training Tasks for User Intent Detection and Embedding Retrieval in E-commerce Search

BERT-style models pre-trained on the general corpus (e.g., Wikipedia) and fine-tuned on specific task corpus, have recently emerged as breakthrough techniques in many NLP tasks: question answering, text classification, sequence labeling and so on. However, this technique may not always work, especially for two scenarios: a corpus that contains very different text from the general corpus Wikipedia, or a task that learns embedding spacial distribution for a specific purpose (e.g., approximate nearest neighbor search). In this paper, to tackle the above two scenarios that we have encountered in an industrial e-commerce search system, we propose customized and novel pre-training tasks for two critical modules: user intent detection and semantic embedding retrieval. The customized pre-trained models after fine-tuning, being less than 10% of BERT-base's size in order to be feasible for cost-efficient CPU serving, significantly improve the other baseline models: 1) no pre-training model and 2) fine-tuned model from the official pre-trained BERT using general corpus, on both offline datasets and online system. We have open sourced our datasets for the sake of reproducibility and future works.

High Energy Irradiation Effects on Silicon Photonic Passive Devices

In this work, the radiation responses of silicon photonic passive devices built in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology are investigated through high energy neutron and 60Co gamma-ray irradiation. The wavelengths of both micro-ring resonators (MRRs) and Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) exhibit blue shifts after high-energy neutron irradiation to a fluence of 1*1012 n/cm2; the blue shift is smaller in MZI devices than in MRRs due to different waveguide widths. Devices with SiO2 upper cladding layer show strong tolerance to irradiation. Neutron irradiation leads to slight changes in the crystal symmetry in the Si cores of the optical devices and accelerated oxidization for devices without SiO2 cladding. A 2 um top cladding of SiO2 layer significantly improves the radiation tolerance of these passive photonic devices.

Towards Personalized and Semantic Retrieval: An End-to-End Solution for E-commerce Search via Embedding Learning

Nowadays e-commerce search has become an integral part of many people's shopping routines. Two critical challenges stay in today's e-commerce search: how to retrieve items that are semantically relevant but not exact matching to query terms, and how to retrieve items that are more personalized to different users for the same search query. In this paper, we present a novel approach called DPSR, which stands for Deep Personalized and Semantic Retrieval, to tackle this problem. Explicitly, we share our design decisions on how to architect a retrieval system so as to serve industry-scale traffic efficiently and how to train a model so as to learn query and item semantics accurately. Based on offline evaluations and online A/B test with live traffics, we show that DPSR model outperforms existing models, and DPSR system can retrieve more personalized and semantically relevant items to significantly improve users' search experience by +1.29% conversion rate, especially for long tail queries by +10.03%. As a result, our DPSR system has been successfully deployed into JD.com's search production since 2019.

The study of neutron spectra in water bath from Pb target irradiated by 250MeV/u protons

The spallation neutrons were produced by the irradiation of Pb with 250 MeV protons. The Pb target was surrounded by water which was used to slow down the emitted neutrons. The moderated neutrons in the water bath were measured by using the resonance detectors of Au, Mn and In with Cd cover. According to the measured activities of the foils, the neutron flux at different resonance energy were deduced and the epithermal neutron spectra were proposed. Corresponding results calculated with the Monte Carlo code MCNPX were compared with the experimental data to check the validity of the code.
