Integrated Experiment and Simulation Co-Design: A Key Infrastructure for Predictive Mesoscale Materials Modeling

The design of structural & functional materials for specialized applications is being fueled by rapid advancements in materials synthesis, characterization, manufacturing, with sophisticated computational materials modeling frameworks that span a wide spectrum of length & time scales in the mesoscale between atomistic & continuum approaches. This is leading towards a systems-based design methodology that will replace traditional empirical approaches, embracing the principles of the Materials Genome Initiative. However, several gaps remain in this framework as it relates to advanced structural materials:(1) limited availability & access to high-fidelity experimental & computational datasets, (2) lack of co-design of experiments & simulation aimed at computational model validation,(3) lack of on-demand access to verified and validated codes for simulation and for experimental analyses, & (4) limited opportunities for workforce training and educational outreach. These shortcomings stifle major innovations in structural materials design. This paper describes plans for a community-driven research initiative that addresses current gaps based on best-practice recommendations of leaders in mesoscale modeling, experimentation & cyberinfrastructure obtained at an NSF-sponsored workshop dedicated to this topic. The proposal is to create a hub for Mesoscale Experimentation and Simulation co-Operation (hMESO)-that will (I) provide curation and sharing of models, data, & codes, (II) foster co-design of experiments for model validation with systematic uncertainty quantification, & (III) provide a platform for education & workforce development. It will engage experimental & computational experts in mesoscale mechanics and plasticity, along with mathematicians and computer scientists with expertise in algorithms, data science, machine learning, & large-scale cyberinfrastructure initiatives.

Exotic light dynamics around a fourth order exceptional point

The physics of exceptional point (EP) singularities, has been a key to a wide range of unique physical applications in open systems. In this context, the mutual interactions among four coupled states around a fourth-order EP (EP4) in a physical system is yet to be explored. Here, we investigate the unique features of an EP4 in a fabrication feasible planar optical waveguide with a multilayer gain-loss profile based on only two tunable parameters. A unique `fourth-order $β$-switching' phenomenon due to quasi-static gain-loss variation around EP4 has been explored. An exclusive chiral light dynamics following the dynamical variation of the gain-loss profile has been reported for the first time, which enables a special type of asymmetric higher-order mode conversion scheme. Here, all the coupled modes associated with an EP4 are fully converted into different specific higher-order modes based on the choice of encirclement directions. The proposed scheme would present EP4 as a new light manipulation tool for integrated photonic devices.

Heisenberg uniqueness pairs for the Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group

In this article, we prove that (unit sphere, non-harmonic cone) is a Heisenberg uniqueness pair for the symplectic Fourier transform on $\mathbb C^n.$ We derive that spheres as well as non-harmonic cones are determining sets for the spectral projections of the finite measure supported on the unit sphere. Further, we prove that if the Fourier transform of a finitely supported function on step two nilpotent Lie group is of arbitrary finite rank, then the function must be zero. The latter result correlates to the annihilating pair for the Weyl transform.

Photonic Crystal Based Ultra-Sensitive Interferometric Sensor with Spatial Resolution up to 1 nm

We report a very high precision interferometric sensor with resolution up to ~λ/1024, exploiting hollow photonic bandgap waveguide-based geometry for the first time. Here sensing has been measured by a complete switching in the direction of the outgoing beam, owing to transverse momentum oscillation phenomena. Using a 1.32 μm source and core-width of 7.25 μm, a complete switching cycle is obtained even due to a small change of ~1 nm in the core-width. Using hollow-core photonic bandgap waveguide, Talbot effect, revivals of the initial phase, oscillation in the transverse momentum along with multi-mode interference served as the backbone of the design. The ultra-sensitive multi-mode interferometric sensor based on photonic crystals will certainly open up a paradigm shift in interferometer-based sensing technologies toward device-level applications in photonic sensing/switching and related precision measurement systems.

Third-order Exceptional Point and Successive Switching among Three States in a Degenerate Optical Microcavity

One of the most intriguing topological features of open systems is exhibiting exceptional point (EP) singularities. Apart from the widely explored second-order EPs (EP2s), the explorations of higher-order EPs in any system requires more complex topology, which is still a challenge. Here, we encounter a third-order EP (EP3) for the first time in a simple fabrication feasible gain-loss assisted optical microcavity. Using scattering-matrix formalism, we study the simultaneous interactions between three successive coupled states around two EP2s, which yield an EP3. Following an adiabatic parametric variation around the identified EP3, we present a robust successive-state-conversion mechanism among three coupled states. The proposed scheme indeed opens a unique platform to manipulate light in integrated devices.

Higher order topological degeneracies and towards unique successive state-switching in a four-level open system

The physics of topological singularities, namely exceptional points (EPs), has been a key to wide range of intriguing and unique physical effects in non-Hermitian systems. In this context, the mutual interactions among four coupled states around fourth-order EPs (EP4s) are yet to be explored. Here we report a four-level parameter-dependent perturbed non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, mimicking quantum or wave-based systems, to explore the physical aspects of an EP4 analytically as well as numerically. The proposed Hamiltonian exhibit different orders of interaction schemes with the simultaneous presence of different higher-order EPs. Here an EP4 has been realized by mutual interaction between four coupled states with proper parameter manipulation. We comprehensively investigate the dynamics of corresponding coupled eigenvalues with stroboscopic parametric variation in the vicinity of the embedded EP4 to establish a new successive state-switching phenomenon among them; which proves to be robust even in the presence of different order of EPs. Implementing the relation of the perturbation parameters with the coupling control parameters, we exclusively report a region to host multiple EP4 in a specific system. The chiral behaviour of successive state-exchange has also been established near EP4. Proposed scheme enriched with physical aspects of EP4s should provide a new light manipulation tool in any anisotropic multi-state integrated system.

Nonlinearity Induced Anomalous Mode Collapsing and Non-chiral Asymmetric Mode Switching around multiple Exceptional Points

The dynamical encirclement around a second order exceptional point (EP) and corresponding chirality driven nonadiabatic modal dynamics have attracted enormous attention in the topological study of various non-Hermitian systems. However, dynamical encirclement around multiple second-order EPs in a multi-state system is yet to be explored. Here, exploiting an exclusive design of a planar gain-loss assisted three-mode supported optical waveguide with local Kerr-nonlinearity, we encounter multiple second-order EPs. Judiciously, choosing a specific parameter space by varying the unbalanced gain-loss profile, we encircle multiple EPs simultaneously, and explore the beam-dynamics toward corresponding chiral or non-chiral aspects of the device. While propagating through the designed waveguide, three coupled modes are collapsed into a specific dominating mode, owing to corresponding nonadiabatic corrections around multiple EPs. Even in the absence of chirality, here, the same amount of focusing and de-focusing type nonlinearity gives different dominating output, irrespective of the choice of inputs, for the same topological structure of the waveguide. This exclusive topologically robust compact scheme of nonlinearity induced asymmetric and non-chiral light dynamics should provide a promising opportunity to switch or retrieve a selective mode from a multi-mode signal in integrated devices.

Propagation and asymmetric behavior of optical pulses through time-dynamic loss-gain assisted media

We report an asymmetric behavior of optical pulses during their propagation through a time-varying linear optical medium. The refractive index of the medium is considered to be varying with time and complex such that a sufficient amount of gain and loss is present to realize their effect on pulse propagation. We have exploited the universal formula for optical fields in time-varying media. Numerically simulated results reveal that pulses undergo opposite temporal shifts around their initial center position during their bi-directional propagation through the medium along with corresponding spectral shifts. Moreover, the peak power and accumulated chirp (time derivative of accumulated phase) of the output pulse in both propagation directions are also opposite in nature irrespective of their initial state. Numerically simulated behavior of the pulses agrees well with the analytical solutions. Possibilities have been explored in context of pulse shaping and unconventional optical devices.

Generation and Stability Analysis of Self Similar Pulses Through Specialty Microstructured Optical Fibers in Mid Infrared Regime

We report a numerical study on generation and stability of parabolic pulses during their propagation through highly nonlinear specialty optical fibers. Here, we have generated a parabolic pulse at 2.1 $μ$m wavelength from a Gaussian input pulse with 1.9 ps FWHM and 75 W peak power after travelling through only 20 cm length of a chalcogenide glass based microstructured optical fiber (MOF). Dependence on input pulse shapes towards most efficient conversion into self similar states is reported. The stability in terms of any deviation from dissipative self-similar nature of such pulses has been analyzed by introducing a variable longitudinal loss profile within the spectral loss window of the MOF, and detailed pulse shapes are captured. Moreover, three different dispersion regimes of propagation have been considered to study the suitability to support most stable propagation of the pulse.

Towards self-similar propagation in a dispersion tailored and highly nonlinear segmented bandgap fiber at 2.8 micron

We numerically demonstrate self-similar propagation of parabolic optical pulses through a highly nonlinear and passive specialty photonic bandgap fiber at 2.8 micron. In this context, we have proposed a scheme endowed with a rapidly varying, but of nearly-mean-zero longitudinal dispersion and modulated nonlinear profile in order to achieve self-similarity of the formed parabolic pulse propagating over longer distances. To implement the proposed scheme, we have designed a segmented bandgap fiber with suitably tapered counterparts to realize such customized dispersion with chalchogenide glass materials. A self-similar parabolic pulse with full-width-at-half-maxima of 4.12 ps and energy of ~ 39 pJ as been achieved at the output. Along with a linear chirp spanning over the entire pulse duration, 3dB spectral broadening of about 38 nm at the output has been reported.

Unconventional optical microcavities hosting multiple exceptional points

Recently, presence of hidden singularities known as exceptional points (EPs) in non-Hermitian quantum systems has opened up a tremendous interest in different domains of physics owing to their unique unconventional physical effects. Effectively for such systems an EP appears as a fascinating topological defect where two mutually interacting eigenstates of the system coalesce. In this work, we report occurrence of EP via avoided crossing between coupled resonance states in an optical microcavity with spatially varying gain loss profile, an optical analogue of non-Hermitian system. With suitably tailored system openness and coupling strength, internally coupled resonances can exhibit EP in a medium with simultaneous presence of loss and gain. We explore the characteristics behaviors of energy eigenvalues in complex energy plane and corresponding eigenstates when the control parameters of the system are adiabatically changed, such a way that they encircle the EP. In this letter, we first ever exploit the above scheme to analyze the optical performance in terms of stability and rigidity of a microcavity simultaneously hosting such multiple EPs.

Quality enhancement with simultaneous suppression in excess noise of longer-lived states in non-uniformly pumped optical microcavities

We study the formation of longer lived states via internal coupling near a special avoided resonance crossing between the interacting states in an open optical system. Away from PT symmetry limit, we discuss the unconventional cavity resonance states created by a spatially varying gain/loss profile. Near certain avoided-resonant crossings (ARC), the parity symmetries of the chosen coupled states dictate the destructive interference resulting high Q, while avoided crossing in the imaginary part of the poles embraces the longer lived state. Now, via S-matrix formalism, we have numerically demonstrated that with suitably chosen system openness and coupling strengths, the excess noise generation among the interacting non-orthogonal states (calculated as Petermann factor K) can be suppressed close to the ideal value 1 with simultaneous order of magnitude enhancement in Q-factor of the longer lived state.

Localization and adiabatic pumping in a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model

A generalization of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model is developed, containing a tunable phase shift between on-site and off-diagonal modulations. A localization transition can be induced by varying just this phase, keeping all other model parameters constant. The complete localization phase diagram is obtained. Unlike the original AAH model, the generalized model can exhibit a transition between topologically trivial bandstructures and topologically non-trivial bandstructures containing protected boundary states. These boundary states can be pumped across the system by adiabatic variations in the phase shift parameter. The model can also be used to demonstrate the phenomenon of adiabatic pumping breakdown due to localization.

Transverse localization of light in 1D disordered waveguide lattices with backbone photonic bandgap

The role of a prominent photonic bandgap (PBG) on the phenomenon of transverse localization of light in a semi-infinite lossless waveguide lattice consisting of evanescently coupled disordered one-dimensional optical waveguides has been investigated numerically. The interplay between the underlying photonic bandgap due to inherent periodicity of the optical system and various levels of deliberately induced transverse disorder in its refractive index periodicity has been studied. We show that the PBG indeed plays an important role and its simultaneous presence could catalyze realization of localized light even when strength of disorder is not sufficiently strong to independently cause localization of light. An important outcome of this study revealed that PBG could be gainfully exploited to tailor the spectral window for localization of light in potential applications like lasing in a disordered optical lattice.

Ultra-large Mode Area Microstructured Core Chalcogenide Fiber Design for Mid-IR Beam Delivery

An all solid large modearea (LMA) chalcogenide based microstructured core optical fiber (MCOF) is designed and proposed for high power handling in the mid IR spectral regime, covering the entire second transparency window of the atmosphere (3 to 5 microns). The core of the proposed specialty fiber is composed of a few rings of high index rods arranged in a pattern of hexagon. Dependence of effective mode area on the pitch and radius of high index rods are studied. Ultra high effective mode area up to 75000 micron square can be achieved over this specific wavelength range while retaining its single mode characteristic. A negligible confinement loss along with a low dispersion slope (near 0.03 ps/km-nm square) and a good beam quality factor (M2 1.17) should make this LMA fiber design attractive for fabrication as a potential candidate suitable for high power, passive applications at the mid IR wavelength regime.

Effect of a weak longitudinal modulation in refractive index on transverse localization of light in 1D disordered waveguide lattices

We report the enhancement of the effect of transverse localization of light (TL) in presence of a weak longitudinal modulation of refractive index in disordered waveguide lattices. In our chosen lattices, tunneling inhibition along length favors to achieve the diffraction-free propagation along with the simultaneous presence of transverse disorder. Results will be useful to tune the threshold value of disorder to achieve localized light.
