On a version of the slicing problem for the surface area of convex bodies

We study the slicing inequality for the surface area instead of volume. This is the question whether there exists a constant $α_n$ depending (or not) on the dimension $n$ so that $$S(K)\leqα_n|K|^{\frac{1}{n}}\max_{ξ\in S^{n-1}}S(K\capξ^{\perp })$$ where $S$ denotes surface area and $|\cdot |$ denotes volume. For any fixed dimension we provide a negative answer to this question, as well as to a weaker version in which sections are replaced by projections onto hyperplanes. We also study the same problem for sections and projections of lower dimension and for all the quermassintegrals of a convex body. Starting from these questions, we also introduce a number of natural parameters relating volume and surface area, and provide optimal upper and lower bounds for them. Finally, we show that, in contrast to the previous negative results, a variant of the problem which arises naturally from the surface area version of the equivalence of the isomorphic Busemann--Petty problem with the slicing problem has an affirmative answer.

On affine invariant and local Loomis-Whitney type inequalities

We prove various extensions of the Loomis-Whitney inequality and its dual, where the subspaces on which the projections (or sections) are considered are either spanned by vectors $w_i$ of a not necessarily orthonormal basis of $\mathbb{R}^n$, or their orthogonal complements. In order to prove such inequalities we estimate the constant in the Brascamp-Lieb inequality in terms of the vectors $w_i$. Restricted and functional versions of the inequality will also be considered.

Reverse Loomis-Whitney inequalities via isotropicity

Given a centered convex body $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, we study the optimal value of the constant $\tildeΛ(K)$ such that there exists an orthonormal basis $\{w_i\}_{i=1}^n$ for which the following reverse dual Loomis-Whitney inequality holds: $$ |K|^{n-1}\leqslant \tildeΛ(K)\prod_{i=1}^n|K\cap w_i^\perp|. $$ We prove that $\tildeΛ(K)\leqslant(CL_K)^n$ for some absolute $C>1$ and that this estimate in terms of $L_K$, the isotropic constant of $K$, is asymptotically sharp in the sense that there exists another absolute constant $c>1$ and a convex body $K$ such that $(cL_K)^n\leqslant\tildeΛ(K)\leqslant(CL_K)^n$. We also prove more general reverse dual Loomis-Whitney inequalities as well as reverse restricted versions of Loomis-Whitney and dual Loomis-Whitney inequalities.

On the average volume of sections of convex bodies

The average section functional ${\rm as}(K)$ of a centered convex body in ${\mathbb R}^n$ is the average volume of central hyperplane sections of $K$: \begin{equation*}{\rm as}(K)=\int_{S^{n-1}}|K\cap ξ^{\perp }|\,dσ(ξ).\end{equation*} We study the question if there exists an absolute constant $C>0$ such that for every $n$, for every centered convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ and for every 0<k<n, $${\rm as}(K)\ls C^k|K|^{\frac{k}{n}}\,\max_{E\in {\rm Gr}_{n-k}}{\rm as}(K\cap E).$$ We observe that the case $k=1$ is equivalent to the hyperplane conjecture. We show that this inequality holds true in full generality if one replaces $C$ by $CL_K$ or $Cd_{\rm ovr}(K,{\cal{BP}}_k^n)$, where $L_K$ is the isotropic constant of $K$ and $d_{\rm ovr}(K,{\cal{BP}}_k^n)$ is the outer volume ratio distance from $K$ to the class ${\cal{BP}}_k^n$ of generalized $k$-intersection bodies. We also compare ${\rm as}(K)$ to the average of ${\rm as}(K\cap E)$ over all $k$-codimensional sections of $K$. We examine separately the dependence of the constants on the dimension in the case where $K$ is in some of the classical positions as well as the natural lower dimensional analogue of the average section functional.

Brascamp-Lieb inequality and quantitative versions of Helly's theorem

We provide a number of new quantitative versions of Helly's theorem. For example, we show that for every family $\{P_i:i\in I\}$ of closed half-spaces $$P_i=\{x\in {\mathbb R}^n:\langle x,w_i\rangle \leq 1\}$$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ such that $P=\bigcap_{i\in I}P_i$ has positive volume, there exist $s\leq αn$ and $i_1,\ldots, i_s\in I$ such that $$|P_{i_1}\cap\cdots\cap P_{i_s}|\leq (Cn)^n\,|P|,$$ where $α, C>0$ are absolute constants. These results complement and improve previous work of Bárány-Katchalski-Pach and Naszódi. Our method combines the work of Srivastava on approximate John's decompositions with few vectors, a new estimate on the corresponding constant in the Brascamp-Lieb inequality and an appropriate variant of Ball's proof of the reverse isoperimetric inequality.

Fractional Helly theorem for the diameter of convex sets

We provide a new quantitative version of Helly's theorem: there exists an absolute constant $α>1$ with the following property: if $\{P_i: i\in I\}$ is a finite family of convex bodies in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with ${\rm int}\left (\bigcap_{i\in I}P_i\right )\neq\emptyset $, then there exist $z\in {\mathbb R}^n$, $s\leq αn$ and $i_1,\ldots i_s\in I$ such that \begin{equation*} z+P_{i_1}\cap\cdots\cap P_{i_s}\subseteq cn^{3/2}\left(z+\bigcap_{i\in I}P_i\right), \end{equation*} where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. This directly gives a version of the "quantitative" diameter theorem of Bárány, Katchalski and Pach, with a polynomial dependence on the dimension. In the symmetric case the bound $O(n^{3/2})$ can be improved to $O(\sqrt{n})$.

Random approximation and the vertex index of convex bodies

We prove that there exists an absolute constant $α>1$ with the following property: if $K$ is a convex body in ${\mathbb R}^n$ whose center of mass is at the origin, then a random subset $X\subset K$ of cardinality ${\rm card}(X)=\lceilαn\rceil $ satisfies with probability greater than $1-e^{-n}$ {K\subseteq c_1n\,{\mathrm conv}(X),} where $c_1>0$ is an absolute constant. As an application we show that the vertex index of any convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ is bounded by $c_2n^2$, where $c_2>0$ is an absolute constant, thus extending an estimate of Bezdek and Litvak for the symmetric case.
