Limit theorems for the distance of random points in $l_p^n$-balls

In this paper, we prove that the Euclidean distance between two independent random vectors uniformly distributed on $l_p^n$-balls $(1 \leq p \leq \infty)$ or on its boundary satisfies a central limit theorem as $n$ tends to $\infty$. Also, we give a compact proof of the case of the sphere, which was proved by Hammersley. Furthermore, we complement our central limit theorem by providing large deviation principles for the cases $p \geq 2$.

On Rogers-Shephard type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator

In this paper we study various Rogers-Shephard type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator $\mathrm{G}_{n}(\cdot)$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, for any non-empty convex bounded sets $K,L\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, we show that \[\mathrm{G}_{n}(K+L)\mathrm{G}_{n}\bigl(K\cap(-L)\bigr) \leq\binom{2n}{n} \mathrm{G}_{n}\bigl(K+(-1,1)^n\bigr)\mathrm{G}_{n}\bigl(L+(-1,1)^n\bigr). \] and \[ \mathrm{G}_{n-k}(P_{H^\perp} K)\mathrm{G}_{k}(K\cap H)\leq\binom{n}{k}\mathrm{G}_{n}\bigl(K+(-1,1)^n\bigr), \] for $H=\mathrm{lin}\{\mathrm{e}_1,\dots,\mathrm{e}_k\}$, $k\in\{1,\dots,n-1\}$. Additionally, a discrete counterpart to a classical result by Berwald for concave functions, from which other discrete Rogers-Shephard type inequalities may be derived, is shown. Furthermore, we prove that these new discrete analogues for $\mathrm{G}_{n}(\cdot)$ imply the corresponding results involving the Lebesgue measure.

Further inequalities for the (generalized) Wills functional

The Wills functional $\mathcal{W}(K)$ of a convex body $K$, defined as the sum of its intrinsic volumes $\mathrm{V}_i(K)$, turns out to have many interesting applications and properties. In this paper we make profit of the fact that it can be represented as the integral of a log-concave function, which, furthermore, is the Asplund product of other two log-concave functions, and obtain new properties of the Wills functional (indeed, we will work in a more general setting). Among others, we get upper bounds for $\mathcal{W}(K)$ in terms of the volume of $K$, as well as Brunn-Minkowski and Rogers-Shephard type inequalities for this functional. We also show that the cube of edge-length 2 maximizes $\mathcal{W}(K)$ among all $0$-symmetric convex bodies in John position, and we reprove the well-known McMullen inequality $\mathcal{W}(K)\leq e^{\mathrm{V}_1(K)}$ using a different approach.

Large deviations, moderate deviations, and the KLS conjecture

Having its origin in theoretical computer science, the Kannan-Lovász-Simonovits (KLS) conjecture is one of the major open problems in asymptotic convex geometry and high-dimensional probability theory today. In this work, we establish a new connection between this conjecture and the study of large and moderate deviations for isotropic log-concave random vectors, thereby providing a novel possibility to tackle the conjecture. We then study the moderate deviations for the Euclidean norm of random orthogonally projected random vectors in an $\ell_p^n$-ball. This leads to a number of interesting observations: (A) the $\ell_1^n$-ball is critical for the new approach; (B) for $p\geq 2$ the rate function in the moderate deviations principle undergoes a phase transition, depending on whether the scaling is below the square-root of the subspace dimensions or comparable; (C) for $1\leq p<2$ and comparable subspace dimensions, the rate function again displays a phase transition depending on its growth relative to $n^{p/2}$.

On affine invariant and local Loomis-Whitney type inequalities

We prove various extensions of the Loomis-Whitney inequality and its dual, where the subspaces on which the projections (or sections) are considered are either spanned by vectors $w_i$ of a not necessarily orthonormal basis of $\mathbb{R}^n$, or their orthogonal complements. In order to prove such inequalities we estimate the constant in the Brascamp-Lieb inequality in terms of the vectors $w_i$. Restricted and functional versions of the inequality will also be considered.

Reverse Loomis-Whitney inequalities via isotropicity

Given a centered convex body $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, we study the optimal value of the constant $\tildeΛ(K)$ such that there exists an orthonormal basis $\{w_i\}_{i=1}^n$ for which the following reverse dual Loomis-Whitney inequality holds: $$ |K|^{n-1}\leqslant \tildeΛ(K)\prod_{i=1}^n|K\cap w_i^\perp|. $$ We prove that $\tildeΛ(K)\leqslant(CL_K)^n$ for some absolute $C>1$ and that this estimate in terms of $L_K$, the isotropic constant of $K$, is asymptotically sharp in the sense that there exists another absolute constant $c>1$ and a convex body $K$ such that $(cL_K)^n\leqslant\tildeΛ(K)\leqslant(CL_K)^n$. We also prove more general reverse dual Loomis-Whitney inequalities as well as reverse restricted versions of Loomis-Whitney and dual Loomis-Whitney inequalities.

Rogers-Shephard inequality for log-concave functions

In this paper we prove different functional inequalities extending the classical Rogers-Shephard inequalities for convex bodies. The original inequalities provide an optimal relation between the volume of a convex body and the volume of several symmetrizations of the body, such as, its difference body. We characterize the equality cases in all these inequalities. Our method is based on the extension of the notion of a convolution body of two convex sets to any pair of log-concave functions and the study of some geometrical properties of these new sets.

The variance conjecture on hyperplane projections of l_p^n balls

We show that for any $1\leq p\leq\infty$, the family of random vectors uniformly distributed on hyperplane projections of the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$ verify the variance conjecture $$ \textrm{Var}\,|X|^2\leq C\max_{ξ\in S^{n-1}}\mathbb{E}\langle X,ξ\rangle^2\mathbb{E}|X|^2, $$ where $C$ depends on $p$ but not on the dimension $n$ or the hyperplane. We will also show a general result relating the variance conjecture for a random vector uniformly distributed on an isotropic convex body and the variance conjecture for a random vector uniformly distributed on any Steiner symmetrization of it. As a consequence we will have that the class of random vectors uniformly distributed on any Steiner symmetrization of an $\ell_p^n$-ball verify the variance conjecture.

John's ellipsoid and the integral ratio of a log-concave function

We extend the notion of John's ellipsoid to the setting of integrable log-concave functions. This will allow us to define the integral ratio of a log-concave function, which will extend the notion of volume ratio, and we will find the log-concave function maximizing the integral ratio. A reverse functional affine isoperimetric inequality will be given, written in terms of this integral ratio. This can be viewed as a stability version of the functional affine isoperimetric inequality.

Volume inequalities for the $i$-th-Convolution bodies

We obtain a new extension of Rogers-Shephard inequality providing an upper bound for the volume of the sum of two convex bodies $K$ and $L$. We also give lower bounds for the volume of the $k$-th limiting convolution body of two convex bodies $K$ and $L$. Special attention is paid to the $(n-1)$-th limiting convolution body, for which a sharp inequality, which is equality only when $K=-L$ is a simplex, is given. Since the $n$-th limiting convolution body of $K$ and $-K$ is the polar projection body of $K$, these inequalities can be viewed as an extension of Zhang's inequality.

The variance conjecture on some polytopes

We show that any random vector uniformly distributed on any hyperplane projection of $B_1^n$ or $B_\infty^n$ verifies the variance conjecture $$\text{Var}|X|^2\leq C\sup_{ξ\in S^{n-1}}\E<X,ξ>^2\E|X|^2.$$ Furthermore, a random vector uniformly distributed on a hyperplane projection of $B_\infty^n$ verifies a negative square correlation property and consequently any of its linear images verifies the variance conjecture.
