Dark Fluxes from Accreting Black Holes and Direct Detections

We discuss the possibility that accreting black hole systems can be sources for dark matter flux through several different mechanisms. We firstly discuss two types of systems: coronal thermal plasmas around supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and accretion disks of stellar-mass X-ray black hole binaries (BHBs). We explore how these black hole systems may produce keV light dark matter fluxes and find that the dark fluxes from those sources might be too weak to account for the current XENON1T excess. On the other hand, black holes can be good accelerators to accrete and boost heavy dark matter particles. If considering collisions or dark electromagnetism, those particles can then escape and reach the benchmark speed of 0.1c at the detector. We also extend the black hole mass region to primordial black holes (PBHs) and discuss the possibility of contributing to keV light dark flux via superradiance of PBHs.

Pulsar Timing Residual induced by Wideband Ultralight Dark Matter with Spin 0, 1, 2

The coherent oscillation of ultralight dark matter in the mass regime around $10^{-23}$ eV induces changes in gravitational potential with the frequency in the nanohertz range. This effect is known to produce a monochromatic signal in the pulsar timing residuals. Here we discuss a multifield scenario that produces a wide spectrum of frequencies, such that the ultralight particle oscillation can mimic the pulsar timing signal of stochastic common spectrum process. We discuss how ultralight dark matter with various spins produces such a wide band spectrum on pulsar timing residuals and perform the Bayesian analysis to constrain the parameters. It turns out that the stochastic background detected by NANOGrav can be associated with a wideband ultralight dark matter.

Highly Boosted Higgs Bosons and Unitarity in Vector-Boson Fusion at Future Hadron Colliders

We study the observability of new interactions which modify Higgs-pair production via vector-boson fusion processes at the LHC and at future proton-proton colliders. In an effective-Lagrangian approach, we explore in particular the effect of the operator $h^2 W_{μν}^a W^{a,μν}$, which describes the interaction of the Higgs boson with transverse vector-boson polarization modes. By tagging highly boosted Higgs bosons in the final state, we determine projected bounds for the coefficient of this operator at the LHC and at a future 27 TeV or 100 TeV collider. Taking into account unitarity constraints, we estimate the new-physics discovery potential of Higgs pair production in this channel.

Multi-Higgs Production and Unitarity in Vector-Boson Fusion at Future Hadron Colliders

We study multi-Higgs final states in vector boson fusion (VBF) processes at the LHC and at future proton-proton colliders, focusing on the prospects for measurements at 27 TeV and at 100 TeV. We use an effective Lagrangian which includes higher-dimensional operators in the mass eigenstates which are relevant to VBF processes and relate this to specific parameterizations and models for new physics in the Higgs sector. We derive theoretical constraints on the parameter space from the unitarity of $2\to n$ scattering amplitudes and apply the results to $V V \to hh$ and $h h h$ processes, where $V=W,Z$. As a result, we present constraints on differential distributions as appropriate to the study of $V V \to hh$ and $h h h$ processes.

An O(750) GeV Resonance and Inflation

We study the possibility of a heavy scalar or pseudoscalar in TeV-scale beyond the Standard Model scenarios being the inflaton of the early universe in light of the recent O(750) GeV diphoton excess at the LHC. We consider a scenario in which the new scalar or pseudoscalar couples to the Standard Model gauge bosons at the loop level through new massive Standard Model charged vectorlike fermions with or without dark fermions. We calculate the renormalization group running of both the Standard Model and the new scalar couplings, and present two different models that are perturbative and with a stabilized vacuum up to near the Planck scale. Thus, the Standard Model Higgs and this possible new resonance may still preserve the minimalist features of Higgs inflation.

Echoes of Inflationary First-Order Phase Transitions in the CMB

Cosmological phase transitions (CPTs), such as the Grand Unified Theory (GUT) and the electroweak (EW) ones, play a significant role in both particle physics and cosmology. In this letter, we propose to probe the first-order CPTs, by detecting gravitational waves (GWs) which are generated during the phase transitions through the cosmic microwave background (CMB). If happened around the inflation era, the first-order CPTs may yield low-frequency GWs due to bubble dynamics, leaving imprints on the CMB. In contrast to the nearly scale-invariant primordial GWs caused by vacuum fluctuation, these bubble-generated GWs are scale dependent and have non-trivial B-mode spectra. If decoupled from inflaton, the EWPT during inflation may serve as a probe for the one after reheating where the baryon asymmetry could be generated via EW baryogenesis (EWBG). The CMB thus provides a potential way to test the feasibility of the EWBG, complementary to the collider measurements of Higgs potential and the direct detection of GWs generated during EWPT.

Little Flavor: Heavy Leptons, Z' and Higgs Phenomenology

The Little Flavor model is a close cousin of the Little Higgs theory which aims to generate flavor structure around TeV scale. While the original Little Flavor only included the quark sector, here we build the lepton part of the Little Flavor model and explore its phenomenology. The model produces the neutrino mixing matrix and Majorana masses of the Standard Model neutrinos through coupling to heavy lepton partners and Little Higgses. We combine the usual right-handed seesaw mechanism with global symmetry protection to suppress the Standard Model neutrino masses, and identify the TeV partners of leptons as right-handed Majorana neutrinos. The lepton masses and mixing matrix are calculated perturbatively in the theory. The TeV new gauge bosons have suppressed decay width in dilepton channels. Even assuming the Standard Model couplings, the branching ratios to normal dilepton channels are largely reduced in the model, to evade the bound from current $Z'$ search. It also opens up the new search channels for exotic gauge bosons, especially Z' -> MET + multi L+jets. The multiple lepton partners will create new chain decay signals in flavor related processes in colliders, which also give rise to flavor anomalies. The lepton flavor violation process can be highly suppressed in charged lepton sector and happens only through neutrinos.

Large Two-loop Effects in the Higgs Sector as New Physics Probes

We consider a simple Higgs portal model in beyond the standard model scenario: an extra real gauge singlet scalar that couples to the Higgs. We calculate the higher-loop corrections to the cross section of the Higgsstrahlung process $e^+e^- \rightarrow Z h$, along with the tri-Higgs coupling and the wave-function renormalization. We find noticeable contribution to the total Higgsstrahlung cross section, especially coming from two-loop diagrams. We also find that the correction to the tri-Higgs coupling is complex when this extra scalar is lighter than half of the center of mass energy. It indicates a new source of CP violation. In the region of this extra scalar being lighter than a couple of hundreds of GeVs, we argue that the higher-loop calculation is a more reliable approach than the effective field theory calculation.

The Field Theory of Intersecting D3-branes

We examine the defect gauge theory on two perpendicular D3-branes with a 1+1 dimensional intersection, consisting of $U(1)$ fields on the D3-branes and charged hypermultiplets on the intersection. We argue that this gauge theory must have a magnetically charged soliton corresponding to the D-string stretched between the branes. We show that the hypermultiplets do source magnetic as well as electric fields, but the magnetic charges are confined if the hypermultiplet action is canonical. Considerations of periodicity of the hypermultiplet space lead to a nontrivial Gibbons-Hawking metric, and we show that there is then the expected magnetic kink solution. The hypermultiplet metric has a singularity, which we argue must be resolved by embedding in the full string theory. Another interesting feature is that the classical field equations have logarithmic divergences at the intersection, which lead to a classical renormalization group flow in the action.

Little flavor: A model of weak-scale flavor physics

We describe a model of quarks which identifies the large global symmetries of little Higgs models with the global flavor symmetries that arise in a deconstruction of the extra-dimensional 'topological insulator' model of flavor. The nonlinearly realized symmetries of little Higgs theories play a critical role in determining the flavor structure of fermion masses and mixing. All flavor physics occurs at the few TeV scale in this model, yet flavor changing neutral currents arising from the new physics are naturally smaller than those generated radiatively in the standard model, without having to invoke minimal flavor violation.

Matrix Flavor Brane and Dual Wilson Line

We study a novel non-Abelian matrix configuration of probe D-branes in AdS5. This configuration gives rise to a new D-brane phenomenon related to the known "Myers effect" in the context of holography. It is dual to a deformation of the field theory by a Wilson line threaded fermion bilinear. We study the two point function of these short Wilson lines from both the non-Abelian DBI action and a classical string world sheet calculation and identify the region where they agree. We also study a related configuration where the non-Abelian nature of the embedding functions is enhanced by a background flux as in the Myers effect.

Spacetime as a topological insulator: Mechanism for the origin of the fermion generations

We suggest a mechanism whereby the three generations of quarks and leptons correspond to surface modes in a five-dimensional theory. These modes arise from a nonlinear fermion dispersion relation in the extra dimension, much in the same manner as fermion surface modes in a topological insulator or lattice implementation of domain wall fermions. We also show that the topological properties can persist in a deconstructed version of the model in four dimensions.

A new field theoretic method for the virial expansion

We develop a graphical method for computing the virial expansion coefficients for a nonrelativistic quantum field theory. As an example we compute the third virial coefficient b3 for unitary fermions, a nonperturbative system. By calculating several graphs and performing an extrapolation, we arrive at b3 =-0.2930, within 0.7% of a recent computation b3 = -0.29095295 by Liu, Hu and Drummond, which involved summing 10,000 energy levels for three unitary fermions in a harmonic trap.

Finite size effects on the statistical angle of an electron induced dyon in proximity to a topological insulator

A pointlike electric charge close to the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator induces a magnetic monopole mirror charge. We study the distance dependence of the statistical angle describing this induced dyon system. We find that the total angular momentum, which sometimes is used as signature of the statistical angle, for an electron outside a finite size spherical or tube shaped topological insulator is zero for any finite distance between the electron and the surface. However, we show that in the 2-electron system one can indeed isolate a non-trivial statistical angle for intermediate size loops, that is loops much larger than the distance of the charge to the sample but much smaller than the size of the sample. The necessity for this limit confirms the 2+1 dimensional nature of the non-trivial statistical angle found in previous work. Our results clarify the conditions under which the statistical angle of this system could be measured in real experiments.
