Dream-VL & Dream-VLA: Open Vision-Language and Vision-Language-Action Models with Diffusion Language Model Backbone

While autoregressive Large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have achieved remarkable success, their sequential generation often limits their efficacy in complex visual planning and dynamic robotic control. In this work, we investigate the potential of constructing Vision-Language Models upon diffusion-based large language models (dLLMs) to overcome these limitations. We introduce Dream-VL, an open diffusion-based VLM (dVLM) that achieves state-of-the-art performance among previous dVLMs. Dream-VL is comparable to top-tier AR-based VLMs trained on open data on various benchmarks but exhibits superior potential when applied to visual planning tasks. Building upon Dream-VL, we introduce Dream-VLA, a dLLM-based Vision-Language-Action model (dVLA) developed through continuous pre-training on open robotic datasets. We demonstrate that the natively bidirectional nature of this diffusion backbone serves as a superior foundation for VLA tasks, inherently suited for action chunking and parallel generation, leading to significantly faster convergence in downstream fine-tuning. Dream-VLA achieves top-tier performance of 97.2% average success rate on LIBERO, 71.4% overall average on SimplerEnv-Bridge, and 60.5% overall average on SimplerEnv-Fractal, surpassing leading models such as $π_0$ and GR00T-N1. We also validate that dVLMs surpass AR baselines on downstream tasks across different training objectives. We release both Dream-VL and Dream-VLA to facilitate further research in the community.

Laplacian Kernelized Bandit

We study multi-user contextual bandits where users are related by a graph and their reward functions exhibit both non-linear behavior and graph homophily. We introduce a principled joint penalty for the collection of user reward functions $\{f_u\}$, combining a graph smoothness term based on RKHS distances with an individual roughness penalty. Our central contribution is proving that this penalty is equivalent to the squared norm within a single, unified \emph{multi-user RKHS}. We explicitly derive its reproducing kernel, which elegantly fuses the graph Laplacian with the base arm kernel. This unification allows us to reframe the problem as learning a single ''lifted'' function, enabling the design of principled algorithms, \texttt{LK-GP-UCB} and \texttt{LK-GP-TS}, that leverage Gaussian Process posteriors over this new kernel for exploration. We provide high-probability regret bounds that scale with an \emph{effective dimension} of the multi-user kernel, replacing dependencies on user count or ambient dimension. Empirically, our methods outperform strong linear and non-graph-aware baselines in non-linear settings and remain competitive even when the true rewards are linear. Our work delivers a unified, theoretically grounded, and practical framework that bridges Laplacian regularization with kernelized bandits for structured exploration.

Towards Fine-Grained and Verifiable Concept Bottleneck Models

Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs) offer interpretable alternatives to black-box predictors by introducing human-relatable concepts before the final output. However, existing CBMs struggle to verify whether predicted concepts correspond to the correct visual evidence, limiting their reliability. We propose a fine-grained CBM framework that grounds each concept in localized visual evidence, enabling direct inspection of where and how concepts are encoded. This design allows users to interpret predictions and verify that the model learns intended concepts rather than spurious correlations. Experiments on medical imaging benchmarks show that our learned concept space is information-complete and achieves predictive performance comparable to standard CBMs, while substantially improving transparency. Unlike post-hoc attribution methods, our framework validates both the presence and correctness of concept representations, bridging interpretability with verifiability. Our approach enhances the trustworthiness of CBMs and establishes a principled mechanism for human-model interaction at the concept level, paving the way toward more reliable and clinically actionable concept-based learning systems.

Dual Learning Music Composition and Dance Choreography

Music and dance have always co-existed as pillars of human activities, contributing immensely to the cultural, social, and entertainment functions in virtually all societies. Notwithstanding the gradual systematization of music and dance into two independent disciplines, their intimate connection is undeniable and one art-form often appears incomplete without the other. Recent research works have studied generative models for dance sequences conditioned on music. The dual task of composing music for given dances, however, has been largely overlooked. In this paper, we propose a novel extension, where we jointly model both tasks in a dual learning approach. To leverage the duality of the two modalities, we introduce an optimal transport objective to align feature embeddings, as well as a cycle consistency loss to foster overall consistency. Experimental results demonstrate that our dual learning framework improves individual task performance, delivering generated music compositions and dance choreographs that are realistic and faithful to the conditioned inputs.

Federated Learning Challenges and Opportunities: An Outlook

Federated learning (FL) has been developed as a promising framework to leverage the resources of edge devices, enhance customers' privacy, comply with regulations, and reduce development costs. Although many methods and applications have been developed for FL, several critical challenges for practical FL systems remain unaddressed. This paper provides an outlook on FL development, categorized into five emerging directions of FL, namely algorithm foundation, personalization, hardware and security constraints, lifelong learning, and nonstandard data. Our unique perspectives are backed by practical observations from large-scale federated systems for edge devices.

Few-Shot Object Detection by Knowledge Distillation Using Bag-of-Visual-Words Representations

While fine-tuning based methods for few-shot object detection have achieved remarkable progress, a crucial challenge that has not been addressed well is the potential class-specific overfitting on base classes and sample-specific overfitting on novel classes. In this work we design a novel knowledge distillation framework to guide the learning of the object detector and thereby restrain the overfitting in both the pre-training stage on base classes and fine-tuning stage on novel classes. To be specific, we first present a novel Position-Aware Bag-of-Visual-Words model for learning a representative bag of visual words (BoVW) from a limited size of image set, which is used to encode general images based on the similarities between the learned visual words and an image. Then we perform knowledge distillation based on the fact that an image should have consistent BoVW representations in two different feature spaces. To this end, we pre-learn a feature space independently from the object detection, and encode images using BoVW in this space. The obtained BoVW representation for an image can be considered as distilled knowledge to guide the learning of object detector: the extracted features by the object detector for the same image are expected to derive the consistent BoVW representations with the distilled knowledge. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our method and demonstrate the superiority over other state-of-the-art methods.

Motion Prediction via Joint Dependency Modeling in Phase Space

Motion prediction is a classic problem in computer vision, which aims at forecasting future motion given the observed pose sequence. Various deep learning models have been proposed, achieving state-of-the-art performance on motion prediction. However, existing methods typically focus on modeling temporal dynamics in the pose space. Unfortunately, the complicated and high dimensionality nature of human motion brings inherent challenges for dynamic context capturing. Therefore, we move away from the conventional pose based representation and present a novel approach employing a phase space trajectory representation of individual joints. Moreover, current methods tend to only consider the dependencies between physically connected joints. In this paper, we introduce a novel convolutional neural model to effectively leverage explicit prior knowledge of motion anatomy, and simultaneously capture both spatial and temporal information of joint trajectory dynamics. We then propose a global optimization module that learns the implicit relationships between individual joint features. Empirically, our method is evaluated on large-scale 3D human motion benchmark datasets (i.e., Human3.6M, CMU MoCap). These results demonstrate that our method sets the new state-of-the-art on the benchmark datasets. Our code will be available at https://github.com/Pose-Group/TEID.

Music-to-Dance Generation with Optimal Transport

Dance choreography for a piece of music is a challenging task, having to be creative in presenting distinctive stylistic dance elements while taking into account the musical theme and rhythm. It has been tackled by different approaches such as similarity retrieval, sequence-to-sequence modeling and generative adversarial networks, but their generated dance sequences are often short of motion realism, diversity and music consistency. In this paper, we propose a Music-to-Dance with Optimal Transport Network (MDOT-Net) for learning to generate 3D dance choreographies from music. We introduce an optimal transport distance for evaluating the authenticity of the generated dance distribution and a Gromov-Wasserstein distance to measure the correspondence between the dance distribution and the input music. This gives a well defined and non-divergent training objective that mitigates the limitation of standard GAN training which is frequently plagued with instability and divergent generator loss issues. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our MDOT-Net can synthesize realistic and diverse dances which achieve an organic unity with the input music, reflecting the shared intentionality and matching the rhythmic articulation. Residual Bootstrap Exploration for Stochastic Linear Bandit

We propose a new bootstrap-based online algorithm for stochastic linear bandit problems. The key idea is to adopt residual bootstrap exploration, in which the agent estimates the next step reward by re-sampling the residuals of mean reward estimate. Our algorithm, residual bootstrap exploration for stochastic linear bandit (\texttt{LinReBoot}), estimates the linear reward from its re-sampling distribution and pulls the arm with the highest reward estimate. In particular, we contribute a theoretical framework to demystify residual bootstrap-based exploration mechanisms in stochastic linear bandit problems. The key insight is that the strength of bootstrap exploration is based on collaborated optimism between the online-learned model and the re-sampling distribution of residuals. Such observation enables us to show that the proposed \texttt{LinReBoot} secure a high-probability $\tilde{O}(d \sqrt{n})$ sub-linear regret under mild conditions. Our experiments support the easy generalizability of the \texttt{ReBoot} principle in the various formulations of linear bandit problems and show the significant computational efficiency of \texttt{LinReBoot}.

Room-Temperature Intrinsic and Extrinsic Damping in Polycrystalline Fe Thin Films

We examine room-temperature magnetic relaxation in polycrystalline Fe films. Out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements reveal Gilbert damping parameters of $\approx$ 0.0024 for Fe films with thicknesses of 4-25 nm, regardless of their microstructural properties. The remarkable invariance with film microstructure strongly suggests that intrinsic Gilbert damping in polycrystalline metals at room temperature is a local property of nanoscale crystal grains, with limited impact from grain boundaries and film roughness. By contrast, the in-plane FMR linewidths of the Fe films exhibit distinct nonlinear frequency dependences, indicating the presence of strong extrinsic damping. To fit our in-plane FMR data, we have used a grain-to-grain two-magnon scattering model with two types of correlation functions aimed at describing the spatial distribution of inhomogeneities in the film. However, neither of the two correlation functions is able to reproduce the experimental data quantitatively with physically reasonable parameters. Our findings advance the fundamental understanding of intrinsic Gilbert damping in structurally disordered films, while demonstrating the need for a deeper examination of how microstructural disorder governs extrinsic damping.

Self-Aware Personalized Federated Learning

In the context of personalized federated learning (FL), the critical challenge is to balance local model improvement and global model tuning when the personal and global objectives may not be exactly aligned. Inspired by Bayesian hierarchical models, we develop a self-aware personalized FL method where each client can automatically balance the training of its local personal model and the global model that implicitly contributes to other clients' training. Such a balance is derived from the inter-client and intra-client uncertainty quantification. A larger inter-client variation implies more personalization is needed. Correspondingly, our method uses uncertainty-driven local training steps and aggregation rule instead of conventional local fine-tuning and sample size-based aggregation. With experimental studies on synthetic data, Amazon Alexa audio data, and public datasets such as MNIST, FEMNIST, CIFAR10, and Sent140, we show that our proposed method can achieve significantly improved personalization performance compared with the existing counterparts.

Temporal Feature Alignment and Mutual Information Maximization for Video-Based Human Pose Estimation

Multi-frame human pose estimation has long been a compelling and fundamental problem in computer vision. This task is challenging due to fast motion and pose occlusion that frequently occur in videos. State-of-the-art methods strive to incorporate additional visual evidences from neighboring frames (supporting frames) to facilitate the pose estimation of the current frame (key frame). One aspect that has been obviated so far, is the fact that current methods directly aggregate unaligned contexts across frames. The spatial-misalignment between pose features of the current frame and neighboring frames might lead to unsatisfactory results. More importantly, existing approaches build upon the straightforward pose estimation loss, which unfortunately cannot constrain the network to fully leverage useful information from neighboring frames. To tackle these problems, we present a novel hierarchical alignment framework, which leverages coarse-to-fine deformations to progressively update a neighboring frame to align with the current frame at the feature level. We further propose to explicitly supervise the knowledge extraction from neighboring frames, guaranteeing that useful complementary cues are extracted. To achieve this goal, we theoretically analyzed the mutual information between the frames and arrived at a loss that maximizes the task-relevant mutual information. These allow us to rank No.1 in the Multi-frame Person Pose Estimation Challenge on benchmark dataset PoseTrack2017, and obtain state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks Sub-JHMDB and Pose-Track2018. Towards Practical Certifiable Patch Defense with Vision Transformer

Patch attacks, one of the most threatening forms of physical attack in adversarial examples, can lead networks to induce misclassification by modifying pixels arbitrarily in a continuous region. Certifiable patch defense can guarantee robustness that the classifier is not affected by patch attacks. Existing certifiable patch defenses sacrifice the clean accuracy of classifiers and only obtain a low certified accuracy on toy datasets. Furthermore, the clean and certified accuracy of these methods is still significantly lower than the accuracy of normal classification networks, which limits their application in practice. To move towards a practical certifiable patch defense, we introduce Vision Transformer (ViT) into the framework of Derandomized Smoothing (DS). Specifically, we propose a progressive smoothed image modeling task to train Vision Transformer, which can capture the more discriminable local context of an image while preserving the global semantic information. For efficient inference and deployment in the real world, we innovatively reconstruct the global self-attention structure of the original ViT into isolated band unit self-attention. On ImageNet, under 2% area patch attacks our method achieves 41.70% certified accuracy, a nearly 1-fold increase over the previous best method (26.00%). Simultaneously, our method achieves 78.58% clean accuracy, which is quite close to the normal ResNet-101 accuracy. Extensive experiments show that our method obtains state-of-the-art clean and certified accuracy with inferring efficiently on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet.

Investigating Pose Representations and Motion Contexts Modeling for 3D Motion Prediction

Predicting human motion from historical pose sequence is crucial for a machine to succeed in intelligent interactions with humans. One aspect that has been obviated so far, is the fact that how we represent the skeletal pose has a critical impact on the prediction results. Yet there is no effort that investigates across different pose representation schemes. We conduct an indepth study on various pose representations with a focus on their effects on the motion prediction task. Moreover, recent approaches build upon off-the-shelf RNN units for motion prediction. These approaches process input pose sequence sequentially and inherently have difficulties in capturing long-term dependencies. In this paper, we propose a novel RNN architecture termed AHMR (Attentive Hierarchical Motion Recurrent network) for motion prediction which simultaneously models local motion contexts and a global context. We further explore a geodesic loss and a forward kinematics loss for the motion prediction task, which have more geometric significance than the widely employed L2 loss. Interestingly, we applied our method to a range of articulate objects including human, fish, and mouse. Empirical results show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in short-term prediction and achieves much enhanced long-term prediction proficiency, such as retaining natural human-like motions over 50 seconds predictions. High-order minibands and interband Landau level reconstruction in graphene moire superlattice

The propagation of Dirac fermions in graphene through a long-period periodic potential would result in a band folding together with the emergence of a series of cloned Dirac points (DPs). In highly aligned graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (G/hBN) heterostructures, the lattice mismatch between the two atomic crystals generates a unique kind of periodic structure known as a moiré superlattice. Of particular interests is the emergent phenomena related to the reconstructed band-structure of graphene, such as the Hofstadter butterfly, topological currents, gate dependent pseudospin mixing, and ballistic miniband conduction. However, most studies so far have been limited to the lower-order minibands, e.g. the 1st and 2nd minibands counted from charge neutrality, and consequently the fundamental nature of the reconstructed higher-order miniband spectra still remains largely unknown. Here we report on probing the higher-order minibands of precisely aligned graphene moiré superlattices by transport spectroscopy. Using dual electrostatic gating, the edges of these high-order minibands, i.e. the 3rd and 4th minibands, can be reached. Interestingly, we have observed interband Landau level (LL) crossinginducing gap closures in a multiband magneto-transport regime, which originates from band overlap between the 2nd and 3rd minibands. As observed high-order minibands and LL reconstruction qualitatively match our simulated results. Our findings highlight the synergistic effect of minibands in transport, thus presenting a new opportunity for graphene electronic devices.

Training High-Performance and Large-Scale Deep Neural Networks with Full 8-bit Integers

Deep neural network (DNN) quantization converting floating-point (FP) data in the network to integers (INT) is an effective way to shrink the model size for memory saving and simplify the operations for compute acceleration. Recently, researches on DNN quantization develop from inference to training, laying a foundation for the online training on accelerators. However, existing schemes leaving batch normalization (BN) untouched during training are mostly incomplete quantization that still adopts high precision FP in some parts of the data paths. Currently, there is no solution that can use only low bit-width INT data during the whole training process of large-scale DNNs with acceptable accuracy. In this work, through decomposing all the computation steps in DNNs and fusing three special quantization functions to satisfy the different precision requirements, we propose a unified complete quantization framework termed as ``WAGEUBN'' to quantize DNNs involving all data paths including W (Weights), A (Activation), G (Gradient), E (Error), U (Update), and BN. Moreover, the Momentum optimizer is also quantized to realize a completely quantized framework. Experiments on ResNet18/34/50 models demonstrate that WAGEUBN can achieve competitive accuracy on the ImageNet dataset. For the first time, the study of quantization in large-scale DNNs is advanced to the full 8-bit INT level. In this way, all the operations in the training and inference can be bit-wise operations, pushing towards faster processing speed, decreased memory cost, and higher energy efficiency. Our throughout quantization framework has great potential for future efficient portable devices with online learning ability.
