Agentifying Patient Dynamics within LLMs through Interacting with Clinical World Model

Sepsis management in the ICU requires sequential treatment decisions under rapidly evolving patient physiology. Although large language models (LLMs) encode broad clinical knowledge and can reason over guidelines, they are not inherently grounded in action-conditioned patient dynamics. We introduce SepsisAgent, a world model-augmented LLM agent for sepsis treatment recommendation. SepsisAgent uses a learned Clinical World Model to simulate patient responses under candidate fluid--vasopressor interventions, and follows a propose--simulate--refine workflow before committing to a prescription. We first show that world-model access alone yields inconsistent LLM decision performance, motivating agent-specific training. We then train SepsisAgent through a three-stage curriculum: patient-dynamics supervised fine-tuning, propose--simulate--refine behavior cloning, and world-model-based agentic reinforcement learning. On MIMIC-IV sepsis trajectories, SepsisAgent outperforms all traditional RL and LLM-based baselines in off-policy value while achieving the best safety profile under guideline adherence and unsafe-action metrics. Further analysis shows that repeated interaction with the Clinical World Model enables the agent to learn regularities in patient evolution, which remain useful even when simulator access is removed.

DeepHalo: A Neural Choice Model with Controllable Context Effects

Modeling human decision-making is central to applications such as recommendation, preference learning, and human-AI alignment. While many classic models assume context-independent choice behavior, a large body of behavioral research shows that preferences are often influenced by the composition of the choice set itself -- a phenomenon known as the context effect or Halo effect. These effects can manifest as pairwise (first-order) or even higher-order interactions among the available alternatives. Recent models that attempt to capture such effects either focus on the featureless setting or, in the feature-based setting, rely on restrictive interaction structures or entangle interactions across all orders, which limits interpretability. In this work, we propose DeepHalo, a neural modeling framework that incorporates features while enabling explicit control over interaction order and principled interpretation of context effects. Our model enables systematic identification of interaction effects by order and serves as a universal approximator of context-dependent choice functions when specialized to a featureless setting. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate strong predictive performance while providing greater transparency into the drivers of choice.

SlingBAG Pro: Accelerating point cloud-based iterative reconstruction for 3D photoacoustic imaging with arbitrary array geometries

High-quality three-dimensional (3D) photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is gaining increasing attention in clinical applications. To address the challenges of limited space and high costs, irregular geometric transducer arrays that conform to specific imaging regions are promising for achieving high-quality 3D PAI with fewer transducers. However, traditional iterative reconstruction algorithms struggle with irregular array configurations, suffering from high computational complexity, substantial memory requirements, and lengthy reconstruction times. In this work, we introduce SlingBAG Pro, an advanced reconstruction algorithm based on the point cloud iteration concept of the Sliding ball adaptive growth (SlingBAG) method, while extending its compatibility to arbitrary array geometries. SlingBAG Pro maintains high reconstruction quality, reduces the number of required transducers, and employs a hierarchical optimization strategy that combines zero-gradient filtering with progressively increased temporal sampling rates during iteration. This strategy rapidly removes redundant spatial point clouds, accelerates convergence, and significantly shortens overall reconstruction time. Compared to the original SlingBAG algorithm, SlingBAG Pro achieves up to a 2.2-fold speed improvement in point cloud-based 3D PA reconstruction under irregular array geometries. SynGR: Unleashing the Potential of Cross-Modal Synergy for Generative Recommendation

Generative Recommendation (GR) has emerged as a promising paradigm by formulating item recommendation as a sequence-to-sequence generation task over item identifiers. Recent studies have incorporated multimodal signals to provide richer token-level evidence for generation. However, existing approaches largely rely on alignment-centric fusion and underexplore synergistic information across modalities. In practice, synergistic information plays a critical role in capturing emergent item properties that cannot be inferred from any single modality alone. Such properties encode intrinsic item semantics and guide user preferences, enabling models to move beyond surface-level feature matching. To address this limitation, we propose \textbf{SynGR}, a synergistic generative recommendation framework that explicitly encourages the exploitation of cross-modal dependencies during generation. By constraining overreliance on dominant modalities, SynGR enables the model to capture emergent item semantics beyond shared or modality-specific signals. Extensive experiments across three benchmark datasets demonstrate that SynGR achieves superior performance.

You Only Anonymize What Is Not Intent-Relevant: Suppressing Non-Intent Privacy Evidence

Anonymizing sensitive information in user text is essential for privacy, yet existing methods often apply uniform treatment across attributes, which can conflict with communicative intent and obscure necessary information. This is particularly problematic when personal attributes are integral to expressive or pragmatic goals. The central challenge lies in determining which attributes to protect, and to what extent, while preserving semantic and pragmatic functions. We propose IntentAnony, a utility-preserving anonymization approach that performs intent-conditioned exposure control. IntentAnony models pragmatic intent and constructs privacy inference evidence chains to capture how distributed cues support attribute inference. Conditioned on intent, it assigns each attribute an exposure budget and selectively suppresses non-intent inference pathways while preserving intent-relevant content, semantic structure, affective nuance, and interactional function. We evaluate IntentAnony using privacy inference success rates, text utility metrics, and human evaluation. The results show an approximately 30% improvement in the overall privacy--utility trade-off, with notably stronger usability of anonymized text compared to prior state-of-the-art methods. On Trivial Cyclically Covering Subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ in Non-Coprime Characteristic

A subspace $U$ of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is called \textit{cyclically covering} if the whole space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is the union of the cyclic shifts of $U$. The case $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ itself is the only covering subspace, is of particular interest. Recently, Huang solved this problem completely under the condition $\gcd(n, q)=1$ using primitive idempotents and trace functions, and explicitly posed the non-coprime case as an open question. This paper provides a complete answer to Huang's question. We prove that if $n = p^k m$ where $p = \operatorname{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\gcd(m, p)=1$, then $h_q(p^k m) = 0$ if and only if $h_q(m) = 0$. This result fully reduces the non-coprime case to the coprime case settled by Huang. Our proof employs the structure theory of cyclic group algebras in modular characteristic.

Evolutionary Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers for Constrained Multi-Objective Optimization with Unknown Constraints

Constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs) pervade real-world applications in science, engineering, and design. Constraint violation has been a building block in designing evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms for solving constrained multi-objective optimization problems. However, in certain scenarios, constraint functions might be unknown or inadequately defined, making constraint violation unattainable and potentially misleading for conventional constrained evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms. To address this issue, we present the first of its kind evolutionary optimization framework, inspired by the principles of the alternating direction method of multipliers that decouples objective and constraint functions. This framework tackles CMOPs with unknown constraints by reformulating the original problem into an additive form of two subproblems, each of which is allotted a dedicated evolutionary population. Notably, these two populations operate towards complementary evolutionary directions during their optimization processes. In order to minimize discrepancy, their evolutionary directions alternate, aiding the discovery of feasible solutions. Comparative experiments conducted against five state-of-the-art constrained evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms, on 120 benchmark test problem instances with varying properties, as well as two real-world engineering optimization problems, demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed framework. Its salient features include faster convergence and enhanced resilience to various Pareto front shapes.

Inferring Heterogeneous Treatment Effects of Crashes on Highway Traffic: A Doubly Robust Causal Machine Learning Approach

Highway traffic crashes exert a considerable impact on both transportation systems and the economy. In this context, accurate and dependable emergency responses are crucial for effective traffic management. However, the influence of crashes on traffic status varies across diverse factors and may be biased due to selection bias. Therefore, there arises a necessity to accurately estimate the heterogeneous causal effects of crashes, thereby providing essential insights to facilitate individual-level emergency decision-making. This paper proposes a novel causal machine learning framework to estimate the causal effect of different types of crashes on highway speed. The Neyman-Rubin Causal Model (RCM) is employed to formulate this problem from a causal perspective. The Conditional Shapley Value Index (CSVI) is proposed based on causal graph theory to filter adverse variables, and the Structural Causal Model (SCM) is then adopted to define the statistical estimand for causal effects. The treatment effects are estimated by Doubly Robust Learning (DRL) methods, which combine doubly robust causal inference with classification and regression machine learning models. Experimental results from 4815 crashes on Highway Interstate 5 in Washington State reveal the heterogeneous treatment effects of crashes at varying distances and durations. The rear-end crashes cause more severe congestion and longer durations than other types of crashes, and the sideswipe crashes have the longest delayed impact. Additionally, the findings show that rear-end crashes affect traffic greater at night, while crash to objects has the most significant influence during peak hours. Statistical hypothesis tests, error metrics based on matched "counterfactual outcomes", and sensitive analyses are employed for assessment, and the results validate the accuracy and effectiveness of our method.

Compositional Visual Generation with Composable Diffusion Models

Large text-guided diffusion models, such as DALLE-2, are able to generate stunning photorealistic images given natural language descriptions. While such models are highly flexible, they struggle to understand the composition of certain concepts, such as confusing the attributes of different objects or relations between objects. In this paper, we propose an alternative structured approach for compositional generation using diffusion models. An image is generated by composing a set of diffusion models, with each of them modeling a certain component of the image. To do this, we interpret diffusion models as energy-based models in which the data distributions defined by the energy functions may be explicitly combined. The proposed method can generate scenes at test time that are substantially more complex than those seen in training, composing sentence descriptions, object relations, human facial attributes, and even generalizing to new combinations that are rarely seen in the real world. We further illustrate how our approach may be used to compose pre-trained text-guided diffusion models and generate photorealistic images containing all the details described in the input descriptions, including the binding of certain object attributes that have been shown difficult for DALLE-2. These results point to the effectiveness of the proposed method in promoting structured generalization for visual generation. Measurement operator for quantum nondemolition measurements

We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the short interaction time regime and projective measurement limit. Several examples are shown which shows how spin squeezing and Schrodinger cat states can be generated using the measurement.

Active Learning for Domain Adaptation: An Energy-Based Approach

Unsupervised domain adaptation has recently emerged as an effective paradigm for generalizing deep neural networks to new target domains. However, there is still enormous potential to be tapped to reach the fully supervised performance. In this paper, we present a novel active learning strategy to assist knowledge transfer in the target domain, dubbed active domain adaptation. We start from an observation that energy-based models exhibit \textit{free energy biases} when training (source) and test (target) data come from different distributions. Inspired by this inherent mechanism, we empirically reveal that a simple yet efficient energy-based sampling strategy sheds light on selecting the most valuable target samples than existing approaches requiring particular architectures or computation of the distances. Our algorithm, Energy-based Active Domain Adaptation (EADA), queries groups of target data that incorporate both domain characteristic and instance uncertainty into every selection round. Meanwhile, by aligning the free energy of target data compact around the source domain via a regularization term, domain gap can be implicitly diminished. Through extensive experiments, we show that EADA surpasses state-of-the-art methods on well-known challenging benchmarks with substantial improvements, making it a useful option in the open world. Causality Inspired Representation Learning for Domain Generalization

Domain generalization (DG) is essentially an out-of-distribution problem, aiming to generalize the knowledge learned from multiple source domains to an unseen target domain. The mainstream is to leverage statistical models to model the dependence between data and labels, intending to learn representations independent of domain. Nevertheless, the statistical models are superficial descriptions of reality since they are only required to model dependence instead of the intrinsic causal mechanism. When the dependence changes with the target distribution, the statistic models may fail to generalize. In this regard, we introduce a general structural causal model to formalize the DG problem. Specifically, we assume that each input is constructed from a mix of causal factors (whose relationship with the label is invariant across domains) and non-causal factors (category-independent), and only the former cause the classification judgments. Our goal is to extract the causal factors from inputs and then reconstruct the invariant causal mechanisms. However, the theoretical idea is far from practical of DG since the required causal/non-causal factors are unobserved. We highlight that ideal causal factors should meet three basic properties: separated from the non-causal ones, jointly independent, and causally sufficient for the classification. Based on that, we propose a Causality Inspired Representation Learning (CIRL) algorithm that enforces the representations to satisfy the above properties and then uses them to simulate the causal factors, which yields improved generalization ability. Extensive experimental results on several widely used datasets verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Comparison of continuity equation and Gaussian mixture model for long-term density propagation using semi-analytical methods

This paper compares the continuum evolution for density equation modelling and the Gaussian mixture model on the 2D phase space long-term density propagation problem in the context of high-altitude and high area-to-mass ratio satellite long-term propagation. The density evolution equation, a pure numerical and pointwise method for the density propagation, is formulated under the influence of solar radiation pressure and Earth's oblateness using semi-analytical methods. Different from the density evolution equation and Monte Carlo techniques, for the Gaussian mixture model, the analytical calculation of the density is accessible from the first two statistical moments (i.e., the mean and the covariance matrix) corresponding to each sub-Gaussian distribution for an initial Gaussian density distribution. An insight is given into the phase space long-term density propagation problem subject to nonlinear dynamics. The efficiency and validity of the density propagation are demonstrated and compared between the density evolution equation and the Gaussian mixture model with respect to standard Monte Carlo techniques.

Do We Really Need to Use Constraint Violation in Constrained Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization?

Constraint violation has been a building block to design evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms for solving constrained multi-objective optimization problems. However, it is not uncommon that the constraint violation is hardly approachable in real-world black-box optimization scenarios. It is unclear that whether the existing constrained evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms, whose environmental selection mechanism are built upon the constraint violation, can still work or not when the formulations of the constraint functions are unknown. Bearing this consideration in mind, this paper picks up four widely used constrained evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms as the baseline and develop the corresponding variants that replace the constraint violation by a crisp value. From our experiments on both synthetic and real-world benchmark test problems, we find that the performance of the selected algorithms have not been significantly influenced when the constraint violation is not used to guide the environmental selection.

Domain Adaptation via Prompt Learning

Unsupervised domain adaption (UDA) aims to adapt models learned from a well-annotated source domain to a target domain, where only unlabeled samples are given. Current UDA approaches learn domain-invariant features by aligning source and target feature spaces. Such alignments are imposed by constraints such as statistical discrepancy minimization or adversarial training. However, these constraints could lead to the distortion of semantic feature structures and loss of class discriminability. In this paper, we introduce a novel prompt learning paradigm for UDA, named Domain Adaptation via Prompt Learning (DAPL). In contrast to prior works, our approach makes use of pre-trained vision-language models and optimizes only very few parameters. The main idea is to embed domain information into prompts, a form of representations generated from natural language, which is then used to perform classification. This domain information is shared only by images from the same domain, thereby dynamically adapting the classifier according to each domain. By adopting this paradigm, we show that our model not only outperforms previous methods on several cross-domain benchmarks but also is very efficient to train and easy to implement.

Fast solver for J2-perturbed Lambert problem using deep neural network

This paper presents a novel and fast solver for the J2-perturbed Lambert problem. The solver consists of an intelligent initial guess generator combined with a differential correction procedure. The intelligent initial guess generator is a deep neural network that is trained to correct the initial velocity vector coming from the solution of the unperturbed Lambert problem. The differential correction module takes the initial guess and uses a forward shooting procedure to further update the initial velocity and exactly meet the terminal conditions. Eight sample forms are analyzed and compared to find the optimum form to train the neural network on the J2-perturbed Lambert problem. The accuracy and performance of this novel approach will be demonstrated on a representative test case: the solution of a multi-revolution J2-perturbed Lambert problem in the Jupiter system. We will compare the performance of the proposed approach against a classical standard shooting method and a homotopy-based perturbed Lambert algorithm. It will be shown that, for a comparable level of accuracy, the proposed method is significantly faster than the other two.

Improving Transferability for Domain Adaptive Detection Transformers

DETR-style detectors stand out amongst in-domain scenarios, but their properties in domain shift settings are under-explored. This paper aims to build a simple but effective baseline with a DETR-style detector on domain shift settings based on two findings. For one, mitigating the domain shift on the backbone and the decoder output features excels in getting favorable results. For another, advanced domain alignment methods in both parts further enhance the performance. Thus, we propose the Object-Aware Alignment (OAA) module and the Optimal Transport based Alignment (OTA) module to achieve comprehensive domain alignment on the outputs of the backbone and the detector. The OAA module aligns the foreground regions identified by pseudo-labels in the backbone outputs, leading to domain-invariant based features. The OTA module utilizes sliced Wasserstein distance to maximize the retention of location information while minimizing the domain gap in the decoder outputs. We implement the findings and the alignment modules into our adaptation method, and it benchmarks the DETR-style detector on the domain shift settings. Experiments on various domain adaptive scenarios validate the effectiveness of our method.

Landscape Correspondence of Empirical and Population Risks in the Eigendecomposition Problem

Spectral methods include a family of algorithms related to the eigenvectors of certain data-generated matrices. In this work, we are interested in studying the geometric landscape of the eigendecomposition problem in various spectral methods. In particular, we first extend known results regarding the landscape at critical points to larger regions near the critical points in a special case of finding the leading eigenvector of a symmetric matrix. For a more general eigendecomposition problem, inspired by recent findings on the connection between the landscapes of empirical risk and population risk, we then build a novel connection between the landscape of an eigendecomposition problem that uses random measurements and the one that uses the true data matrix. We also apply our theory to a variety of low-rank matrix optimization problems and conduct a series of simulations to illustrate our theoretical findings.

Learning Iterative Reasoning through Energy Minimization

Deep learning has excelled on complex pattern recognition tasks such as image classification and object recognition. However, it struggles with tasks requiring nontrivial reasoning, such as algorithmic computation. Humans are able to solve such tasks through iterative reasoning -- spending more time thinking about harder tasks. Most existing neural networks, however, exhibit a fixed computational budget controlled by the neural network architecture, preventing additional computational processing on harder tasks. In this work, we present a new framework for iterative reasoning with neural networks. We train a neural network to parameterize an energy landscape over all outputs, and implement each step of the iterative reasoning as an energy minimization step to find a minimal energy solution. By formulating reasoning as an energy minimization problem, for harder problems that lead to more complex energy landscapes, we may then adjust our underlying computational budget by running a more complex optimization procedure. We empirically illustrate that our iterative reasoning approach can solve more accurate and generalizable algorithmic reasoning tasks in both graph and continuous domains. Learning Modal-Invariant and Temporal-Memory for Video-based Visible-Infrared Person Re-Identification

Thanks for the cross-modal retrieval techniques, visible-infrared (RGB-IR) person re-identification (Re-ID) is achieved by projecting them into a common space, allowing person Re-ID in 24-hour surveillance systems. However, with respect to the probe-to-gallery, almost all existing RGB-IR based cross-modal person Re-ID methods focus on image-to-image matching, while the video-to-video matching which contains much richer spatial- and temporal-information remains under-explored. In this paper, we primarily study the video-based cross-modal person Re-ID method. To achieve this task, a video-based RGB-IR dataset is constructed, in which 927 valid identities with 463,259 frames and 21,863 tracklets captured by 12 RGB/IR cameras are collected. Based on our constructed dataset, we prove that with the increase of frames in a tracklet, the performance does meet more enhancement, demonstrating the significance of video-to-video matching in RGB-IR person Re-ID. Additionally, a novel method is further proposed, which not only projects two modalities to a modal-invariant subspace, but also extracts the temporal-memory for motion-invariant. Learning Temporal Rules from Noisy Timeseries Data

Events across a timeline are a common data representation, seen in different temporal modalities. Individual atomic events can occur in a certain temporal ordering to compose higher level composite events. Examples of a composite event are a patient's medical symptom or a baseball player hitting a home run, caused distinct temporal orderings of patient vitals and player movements respectively. Such salient composite events are provided as labels in temporal datasets and most works optimize models to predict these composite event labels directly. We focus on uncovering the underlying atomic events and their relations that lead to the composite events within a noisy temporal data setting. We propose Neural Temporal Logic Programming (Neural TLP) which first learns implicit temporal relations between atomic events and then lifts logic rules for composite events, given only the composite events labels for supervision. This is done through efficiently searching through the combinatorial space of all temporal logic rules in an end-to-end differentiable manner. We evaluate our method on video and healthcare datasets where it outperforms the baseline methods for rule discovery.

Local and Global Convergence of General Burer-Monteiro Tensor Optimizations

Tensor optimization is crucial to massive machine learning and signal processing tasks. In this paper, we consider tensor optimization with a convex and well-conditioned objective function and reformulate it into a nonconvex optimization using the Burer-Monteiro type parameterization. We analyze the local convergence of applying vanilla gradient descent to the factored formulation and establish a local regularity condition under mild assumptions. We also provide a linear convergence analysis of the gradient descent algorithm started in a neighborhood of the true tensor factors. Complementary to the local analysis, this work also characterizes the global geometry of the best rank-one tensor approximation problem and demonstrates that for orthogonally decomposable tensors the problem has no spurious local minima and all saddle points are strict except for the one at zero which is a third-order saddle point.

Making the Best of Both Worlds: A Domain-Oriented Transformer for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

Extensive studies on Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) have propelled the deployment of deep learning from limited experimental datasets into real-world unconstrained domains. Most UDA approaches align features within a common embedding space and apply a shared classifier for target prediction. However, since a perfectly aligned feature space may not exist when the domain discrepancy is large, these methods suffer from two limitations. First, the coercive domain alignment deteriorates target domain discriminability due to lacking target label supervision. Second, the source-supervised classifier is inevitably biased to source data, thus it may underperform in target domain. To alleviate these issues, we propose to simultaneously conduct feature alignment in two individual spaces focusing on different domains, and create for each space a domain-oriented classifier tailored specifically for that domain. Specifically, we design a Domain-Oriented Transformer (DOT) that has two individual classification tokens to learn different domain-oriented representations, and two classifiers to preserve domain-wise discriminability. Theoretical guaranteed contrastive-based alignment and the source-guided pseudo-label refinement strategy are utilized to explore both domain-invariant and specific information. Comprehensive experiments validate that our method achieves state-of-the-art on several benchmarks.

Mars Entry Trajectory Planning with Range Discretization and Successive Convexification

This paper develops a sequential convex programming approach for Mars entry trajectory planning by range discretization. To improve the accuracy of numerical integration, the range of entry trajectory is selected as the independent variable rather than time or energy. A dilation factor is employed to normalize the entry dynamics and integration interval of the performance index so that the difficult free-final-time programming problem can be converted to a fixed-final-range optimization problem. The bank angle rate with respect to the range is introduced as the new control input in order to decouple the control from the state and facilitate convexification of constraints on the bank angle and its rate. The nonlinear bank angle rate constraint is further relaxed into a linear one via inequality relaxation. Moreover, the nonconvex minimum-time performance index is convexified by regarding flight time as a state variable. Then, the Mars entry trajectory planning problem can be formulated into the framework of convex programming after linearization. By range discretization and successive convexification, the reformulated Mars entry trajectory planning problem is transcribed into a series of convex optimization sub-problems that can be sequentially solved using the convex programming algorithm. The virtual control and adaptive trust-region techniques are employed to improve the accuracy, robustness, and computation efficiency of the algorithm. Numerical simulations with comparative studies are presented to demonstrate the convergence performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Mutual conversion between a magnetic Neel hopfion and a Neel toron

Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic textures attract great attention from researchers due to their fascinating structures and dynamic behaviors. Magnetic hopfion is a prominent example of 3D magnetic textures. Here, we numerically study the mutual conversion between a Neel-type hopfion and a Neel-type toron under an external magnetic field. We also investigate the excitation modes of hopfions and torons in a film with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. It is found that the Neel-type hopfion could be a stable state in the absence of the external magnetic field, and its diameter varies with the out-of-plane magnetic field. The Neel-type hopfion may transform to a Neel-type toron at an out-of-plane magnetic field of about 20 mT, where the cross section structure is a Neel-type skyrmion. The hopfion and toron show different excitation modes in the presence of an in-plane microwave magnetic field. Our results provide a method to realize the conversion between a Neel-type hopfion and a Neel-type toron, which also gives a way to distinguish Bloch-type and Neel-type hopfions.

ROMA: Cross-Domain Region Similarity Matching for Unpaired Nighttime Infrared to Daytime Visible Video Translation

Infrared cameras are often utilized to enhance the night vision since the visible light cameras exhibit inferior efficacy without sufficient illumination. However, infrared data possesses inadequate color contrast and representation ability attributed to its intrinsic heat-related imaging principle. This makes it arduous to capture and analyze information for human beings, meanwhile hindering its application. Although, the domain gaps between unpaired nighttime infrared and daytime visible videos are even huger than paired ones that captured at the same time, establishing an effective translation mapping will greatly contribute to various fields. In this case, the structural knowledge within nighttime infrared videos and semantic information contained in the translated daytime visible pairs could be utilized simultaneously. To this end, we propose a tailored framework ROMA that couples with our introduced cRoss-domain regiOn siMilarity mAtching technique for bridging the huge gaps. To be specific, ROMA could efficiently translate the unpaired nighttime infrared videos into fine-grained daytime visible ones, meanwhile maintain the spatiotemporal consistency via matching the cross-domain region similarity. Furthermore, we design a multiscale region-wise discriminator to distinguish the details from synthesized visible results and real references. Extensive experiments and evaluations for specific applications indicate ROMA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, we provide a new and challenging dataset encouraging further research for unpaired nighttime infrared and daytime visible video translation, named InfraredCity. In particular, it consists of 9 long video clips including City, Highway and Monitor scenarios. All clips could be split into 603,142 frames in total, which are 20 times larger than the recently released daytime infrared-to-visible dataset IRVI.

SP2: A Second Order Stochastic Polyak Method

Recently the "SP" (Stochastic Polyak step size) method has emerged as a competitive adaptive method for setting the step sizes of SGD. SP can be interpreted as a method specialized to interpolated models, since it solves the interpolation equations. SP solves these equation by using local linearizations of the model. We take a step further and develop a method for solving the interpolation equations that uses the local second-order approximation of the model. Our resulting method SP2 uses Hessian-vector products to speed-up the convergence of SP. Furthermore, and rather uniquely among second-order methods, the design of SP2 in no way relies on positive definite Hessian matrices or convexity of the objective function. We show SP2 is very competitive on matrix completion, non-convex test problems and logistic regression. We also provide a convergence theory on sums-of-quadratics.

SPCL: A New Framework for Domain Adaptive Semantic Segmentation via Semantic Prototype-based Contrastive Learning

Although there is significant progress in supervised semantic segmentation, it remains challenging to deploy the segmentation models to unseen domains due to domain biases. Domain adaptation can help in this regard by transferring knowledge from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain. Previous methods typically attempt to perform the adaptation on global features, however, the local semantic affiliations accounting for each pixel in the feature space are often ignored, resulting in less discriminability. To solve this issue, we propose a novel semantic prototype-based contrastive learning framework for fine-grained class alignment. Specifically, the semantic prototypes provide supervisory signals for per-pixel discriminative representation learning and each pixel of source and target domains in the feature space is required to reflect the content of the corresponding semantic prototype. In this way, our framework is able to explicitly make intra-class pixel representations closer and inter-class pixel representations further apart to improve the robustness of the segmentation model as well as alleviate the domain shift problem. Our method is easy to implement and attains superior results compared to state-of-the-art approaches, as is demonstrated with a number of experiments. Towards Fewer Annotations: Active Learning via Region Impurity and Prediction Uncertainty for Domain Adaptive Semantic Segmentation

Self-training has greatly facilitated domain adaptive semantic segmentation, which iteratively generates pseudo labels on unlabeled target data and retrains the network. However, realistic segmentation datasets are highly imbalanced, pseudo labels are typically biased to the majority classes and basically noisy, leading to an error-prone and suboptimal model. In this paper, we propose a simple region-based active learning approach for semantic segmentation under a domain shift, aiming to automatically query a small partition of image regions to be labeled while maximizing segmentation performance. Our algorithm, Region Impurity and Prediction Uncertainty (RIPU), introduces a new acquisition strategy characterizing the spatial adjacency of image regions along with the prediction confidence. We show that the proposed region-based selection strategy makes more efficient use of a limited budget than image-based or point-based counterparts. Further, we enforce local prediction consistency between a pixel and its nearest neighbors on a source image. Alongside, we develop a negative learning loss to make the features more discriminative. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method only requires very few annotations to almost reach the supervised performance and substantially outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Digital Beamforming Robust to Time-Varying Carrier Frequency Offset

Adaptive interference cancellation is rapidly becoming a necessity for our modern wireless communication systems, due to the proliferation of wireless devices that interfere with each other. To cancel interference, digital beamforming algorithms adaptively adjust the weight vector of the antenna array, and in turn its radiation pattern, to minimize interference while maximizing the desired signal power. While these algorithms are effective in ideal scenarios, they are sensitive to signal corruptions. In this work, we consider the case when the transmitter and receiver in a communication system cannot be synchronized, resulting in a carrier frequency offset that corrupts the signal. We present novel beamforming algorithms that are robust to signal corruptions arising from this time-variant carrier frequency offset. In particular, we bring in the Discrete Prolate Spheroidal Sequences (DPSS's) and propose two atomic-norm-minimization (ANM)-based methods in both 1D and 2D frameworks to design a weight vector that can be used to cancel interference when there exist unknown time-varying frequency drift in the pilot and interferer signals. Both algorithms do not assume a pilot signal is known. Noting that solving ANM optimization problems via semi-definite programs can be a computational burden, we also present a novel fast algorithm to approximately solve our 1D ANM optimization problem. Finally, we confirm the benefits of our proposed algorithms and show the advantages over existing approaches with a series of experiments.

Imitation Learning of Neural Spatio-Temporal Point Processes

We present a novel Neural Embedding Spatio-Temporal (NEST) point process model for spatio-temporal discrete event data and develop an efficient imitation learning (a type of reinforcement learning) based approach for model fitting. Despite the rapid development of one-dimensional temporal point processes for discrete event data, the study of spatial-temporal aspects of such data is relatively scarce. Our model captures complex spatio-temporal dependence between discrete events by carefully design a mixture of heterogeneous Gaussian diffusion kernels, whose parameters are parameterized by neural networks. This new kernel is the key that our model can capture intricate spatial dependence patterns and yet still lead to interpretable results as we examine maps of Gaussian diffusion kernel parameters. The imitation learning model fitting for the NEST is more robust than the maximum likelihood estimate. It directly measures the divergence between the empirical distributions between the training data and the model-generated data. Moreover, our imitation learning-based approach enjoys computational efficiency due to the explicit characterization of the reward function related to the likelihood function; furthermore, the likelihood function under our model enjoys tractable expression due to Gaussian kernel parameterization. Experiments based on real data show our method's good performance relative to the state-of-the-art and the good interpretability of NEST's result.

A Mobile Robot Hand-Arm Teleoperation System by Vision and IMU

In this paper, we present a multimodal mobile teleoperation system that consists of a novel vision-based hand pose regression network (Transteleop) and an IMU-based arm tracking method. Transteleop observes the human hand through a low-cost depth camera and generates not only joint angles but also depth images of paired robot hand poses through an image-to-image translation process. A keypoint-based reconstruction loss explores the resemblance in appearance and anatomy between human and robotic hands and enriches the local features of reconstructed images. A wearable camera holder enables simultaneous hand-arm control and facilitates the mobility of the whole teleoperation system. Network evaluation results on a test dataset and a variety of complex manipulation tasks that go beyond simple pick-and-place operations show the efficiency and stability of our multimodal teleoperation system.

An Approach for Process Model Extraction By Multi-Grained Text Classification

Process model extraction (PME) is a recently emerged interdiscipline between natural language processing (NLP) and business process management (BPM), which aims to extract process models from textual descriptions. Previous process extractors heavily depend on manual features and ignore the potential relations between clues of different text granularities. In this paper, we formalize the PME task into the multi-grained text classification problem, and propose a hierarchical neural network to effectively model and extract multi-grained information without manually-defined procedural features. Under this structure, we accordingly propose the coarse-to-fine (grained) learning mechanism, training multi-grained tasks in coarse-to-fine grained order to share the high-level knowledge for the low-level tasks. To evaluate our approach, we construct two multi-grained datasets from two different domains and conduct extensive experiments from different dimensions. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with statistical significance and further investigations demonstrate its effectiveness.

Deep Residual Correction Network for Partial Domain Adaptation

Deep domain adaptation methods have achieved appealing performance by learning transferable representations from a well-labeled source domain to a different but related unlabeled target domain. Most existing works assume source and target data share the identical label space, which is often difficult to be satisfied in many real-world applications. With the emergence of big data, there is a more practical scenario called partial domain adaptation, where we are always accessible to a more large-scale source domain while working on a relative small-scale target domain. In this case, the conventional domain adaptation assumption should be relaxed, and the target label space tends to be a subset of the source label space. Intuitively, reinforcing the positive effects of the most relevant source subclasses and reducing the negative impacts of irrelevant source subclasses are of vital importance to address partial domain adaptation challenge. This paper proposes an efficiently-implemented Deep Residual Correction Network (DRCN) by plugging one residual block into the source network along with the task-specific feature layer, which effectively enhances the adaptation from source to target and explicitly weakens the influence from the irrelevant source classes. Specifically, the plugged residual block, which consists of several fully-connected layers, could deepen basic network and boost its feature representation capability correspondingly. Moreover, we design a weighted class-wise domain alignment loss to couple two domains by matching the feature distributions of shared classes between source and target. Comprehensive experiments on partial, traditional and fine-grained cross-domain visual recognition demonstrate that DRCN is superior to the competitive deep domain adaptation approaches.

Domain Conditioned Adaptation Network

Tremendous research efforts have been made to thrive deep domain adaptation (DA) by seeking domain-invariant features. Most existing deep DA models only focus on aligning feature representations of task-specific layers across domains while integrating a totally shared convolutional architecture for source and target. However, we argue that such strongly-shared convolutional layers might be harmful for domain-specific feature learning when source and target data distribution differs to a large extent. In this paper, we relax a shared-convnets assumption made by previous DA methods and propose a Domain Conditioned Adaptation Network (DCAN), which aims to excite distinct convolutional channels with a domain conditioned channel attention mechanism. As a result, the critical low-level domain-dependent knowledge could be explored appropriately. As far as we know, this is the first work to explore the domain-wise convolutional channel activation for deep DA networks. Moreover, to effectively align high-level feature distributions across two domains, we further deploy domain conditioned feature correction blocks after task-specific layers, which will explicitly correct the domain discrepancy. Extensive experiments on three cross-domain benchmarks demonstrate the proposed approach outperforms existing methods by a large margin, especially on very tough cross-domain learning tasks.

Generative Adversarial User Model for Reinforcement Learning Based Recommendation System

There are great interests as well as many challenges in applying reinforcement learning (RL) to recommendation systems. In this setting, an online user is the environment; neither the reward function nor the environment dynamics are clearly defined, making the application of RL challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel model-based reinforcement learning framework for recommendation systems, where we develop a generative adversarial network to imitate user behavior dynamics and learn her reward function. Using this user model as the simulation environment, we develop a novel Cascading DQN algorithm to obtain a combinatorial recommendation policy which can handle a large number of candidate items efficiently. In our experiments with real data, we show this generative adversarial user model can better explain user behavior than alternatives, and the RL policy based on this model can lead to a better long-term reward for the user and higher click rate for the system.

Massive MIMO Asymptotics for Ray-Based Propagation Channels

Favorable propagation (FP) and channel hardening (CH) are desired properties in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To date, these properties have primarily been analyzed for classical \textit{statistical} channel models, or \textit{ray-based} models with very specific angular parameters and distributions. This paper presents a thorough mathematical analysis of the asymptotic system behavior for ray-based channels with \textit{arbitrary} ray distributions, and considers \textit{two} types of antenna array structures at the cellular base station: a uniform linear array (ULA) and a uniform planar array (UPA). In addition to FP and channel hardening, we analyze the \textit{large system potential} (LSP) which measures the asymptotic ratio of the expected power in the desired channel to the expected total interference power when both the antenna and user numbers grow. LSP is said to hold when this ratio converges to a positive constant. The results demonstrate that while FP is guaranteed in ray-based channels, CH may or may not occur depending on the nature of the model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LSP will not normally hold as the expected interference power grows logarithmically for both ULAs and UPAs relative to the power in the desired channel as the system size increases. Nevertheless, we identify some fundamental and attractive properties of massive MIMO in this limiting regime.

Optimizing AD Pruning of Sponsored Search with Reinforcement Learning

Industrial sponsored search system (SSS) can be logically divided into three modules: keywords matching, ad retrieving, and ranking. During ad retrieving, the ad candidates grow exponentially. A query with high commercial value might retrieve a great deal of ad candidates such that the ranking module could not afford. Due to limited latency and computing resources, the candidates have to be pruned earlier. Suppose we set a pruning line to cut SSS into two parts: upstream and downstream. The problem we are going to address is: how to pick out the best $K$ items from $N$ candidates provided by the upstream to maximize the total system's revenue. Since the industrial downstream is very complicated and updated quickly, a crucial restriction in this problem is that the selection scheme should get adapted to the downstream. In this paper, we propose a novel model-free reinforcement learning approach to fixing this problem. Our approach considers downstream as a black-box environment, and the agent sequentially selects items and finally feeds into the downstream, where revenue would be estimated and used as a reward to improve the selection policy. To the best of our knowledge, this is first time to consider the system optimization from a downstream adaption view. It is also the first time to use reinforcement learning techniques to tackle this problem. The idea has been successfully realized in Baidu's sponsored search system, and online long time A/B test shows remarkable improvements on revenue.

Recovery Analysis of Damped Spectrally Sparse Signals and Its Relation to MUSIC

One of the classical approaches for estimating the frequencies and damping factors in a spectrally sparse signal is the MUSIC algorithm, which exploits the low-rank structure of an autocorrelation matrix. Low-rank matrices have also received considerable attention recently in the context of optimization algorithms with partial observations, and nuclear norm minimization (NNM) has been widely used as a popular heuristic of rank minimization for low-rank matrix recovery problems. On the other hand, it has been shown that NNM can be viewed as a special case of atomic norm minimization (ANM), which has achieved great success in solving line spectrum estimation problems. However, as far as we know, the general ANM (not NNM) considered in many existing works can only handle frequency estimation in undamped sinusoids. In this work, we aim to fill this gap and deal with damped spectrally sparse signal recovery problems. In particular, inspired by the dual analysis used in ANM, we offer a novel optimization-based perspective on the classical MUSIC algorithm and propose an algorithm for spectral estimation that involves searching for the peaks of the dual polynomial corresponding to a certain NNM problem, and we show that this algorithm is in fact equivalent to MUSIC itself. Building on this connection, we also extend the classical MUSIC algorithm to the missing data case. We provide exact recovery guarantees for our proposed algorithms and quantify how the sample complexity depends on the true spectral parameters. In particular, we provide a parameter-specific recovery bound for low-rank matrix recovery of jointly sparse signals rather than use certain incoherence properties as in existing literature. Simulation results also indicate that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform some relevant existing methods (e.g., ANM) in frequency estimation of damped exponentials.

Stochastic Greedy Algorithms For Multiple Measurement Vectors

Sparse representation of a single measurement vector (SMV) has been explored in a variety of compressive sensing applications. Recently, SMV models have been extended to solve multiple measurement vectors (MMV) problems, where the underlying signal is assumed to have joint sparse structures. To circumvent the NP-hardness of the $\ell_0$ minimization problem, many deterministic MMV algorithms solve the convex relaxed models with limited efficiency. In this paper, we develop stochastic greedy algorithms for solving the joint sparse MMV reconstruction problem. In particular, we propose the MMV Stochastic Iterative Hard Thresholding (MStoIHT) and MMV Stochastic Gradient Matching Pursuit (MStoGradMP) algorithms, and we also utilize the mini-batching technique to further improve their performance. Convergence analysis indicates that the proposed algorithms are able to converge faster than their SMV counterparts, i.e., concatenated StoIHT and StoGradMP, under certain conditions. Numerical experiments have illustrated the superior effectiveness of the proposed algorithms over their SMV counterparts.

Stochastic Iterative Hard Thresholding for Low-Tucker-Rank Tensor Recovery

Low-rank tensor recovery problems have been widely studied in many applications of signal processing and machine learning. Tucker decomposition is known as one of the most popular decompositions in the tensor framework. In recent years, researchers have developed many state-of-the-art algorithms to address the problem of low-Tucker-rank tensor recovery. Motivated by the favorable properties of the stochastic algorithms, such as stochastic gradient descent and stochastic iterative hard thresholding, we aim to extend the well-known stochastic iterative hard thresholding algorithm to the tensor framework in order to address the problem of recovering a low-Tucker-rank tensor from its linear measurements. We have also developed linear convergence analysis for the proposed method and conducted a series of experiments with both synthetic and real data to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

Data-driven extraction of heavy quark diffusion in quark-gluon plasma

Heavy quark production provides a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma transport properties in heavy ion collisions. Experimental observables like the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ and elliptic anisotropy $v_{2}$ of heavy flavor mesons are sensitive to the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. There now exist an extensive set of such measurements, which allow a data-driven extraction of this coefficient. In this work, we make such an attempt within our recently developed heavy quark transport modeling framework (Langevin-transport with Gluon Radiation, LGR). A question of particular interest is the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient, for which we test a wide range of possibility and draw constraints by comparing relevant charm meson data with model results. We find that a relatively strong increase of diffusion coefficient from crossover temperature $T_c$ toward high temperature is preferred by data. We also make predictions for Bottom meson observables for further experimental tests.
