Encoding complex-balanced thermalization in quantum circuits

We propose a protocol for effectively implementing complex-balanced thermalization via Markovian processes on a quantum-circuit platform that couples the system with engineered reservoir qubits. The non-orthogonality of qubit eigenstates facilitates non-uniform heating through a modified Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation, while simultaneously supports amplification-dissipation dynamics by violating microscopic time-reversibility. This offers a new approach to realizing out-of-equilibrium states at given temperatures. We show two applications of this platform: temporally-correlated dichromatic emission and Liouvillian exception point protected quantum synchronization at finite temperatures, both of which are challenging to achieve with conventional thermal reservoirs.

Quantum phase diagram for two species hardcore bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices with the resonantly driven Rabi frequency

We propose an experimental realization of the time-periodically modulated Rabi frequency and suggest density-dependent hoppings of two species hardcore bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Distinct from the previous work [Phys. Rev. Research {\bf 2}, 013275 (2020)], we study effects in the first resonance region. In the effective Hamiltonian, the intra-species hopping occurs only if the density discrepancy of the other species on these sites is zero, while the inter-species one is allowed once the relevant density discrepancy becomes nonzero. At integer-$1$ filling, the quantum phase diagram of the effective Hamiltonian is determined by the perturbation analysis together with numerical calculations. We find that in the limit of dominant $J_{1}$, the system becomes a double-degenerate dimerized state, with spontaneously breaking the translation symmetry. The interplay of $J_{0}$, $J_{1}$ and the fixed ${\bar U}=1$ leads to three BKT transition lines and a tricritical BKT point. Exact transition lines are obtained by the level spectroscopic technique. Besides, general physical properties, including the charge gap, neutral gap, superfluid density and dimerization strength, are investigated as well.

Interplay of local order and topology in the extended Haldane-Hubbard model

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the spinful extended Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice using an exact-diagonalization, mean-field variational approach, and further complement it with the infinite density matrix renormalization group, applied to an infinite honeycomb cylinder. This model, governed by both on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, can result in two types of insulators with finite local order parameters, either with spin or charge ordering. Moreover, a third one, a topologically nontrivial insulator with nonlocal order, is also manifest. We test expectations of previous analyses in spinless versions asserting that once a local order parameter is formed, the topological characteristics of the ground state, associated with a finite Chern number, are no longer present, resulting in a topologically trivial wave function. Our study confirms this overall picture, and highlights how finite-size effects may result in misleading conclusions on the coexistence of finite local order parameters and nontrivial topology in this model.

Floquet-Induced Superfluidity with Periodically Modulated Interactions of Two-Species Hardcore Bosons in a One-dimensional Optical Lattice

We consider two species of hard-core bosons with density dependent hopping in a one-dimensional optical lattice, for which we propose experimental realizations using time-periodic driving. The quantum phase diagram for half-integer filling is determined by combining different advanced numerical simulations with analytic calculations. We find that a reduction of the density-dependent hopping induces a Mott-insulator to superfluid transition. For negative hopping a previously unknown state is found, where one species induces a gauge phase of the other species, which leads to a superfluid phase of gauge-paired particles. The corresponding experimental signatures are discussed.

Berry phase induced dimerization in one-dimensional quadrupolar systems

We investigate the effect of the Berry phase on quadrupoles that occur for example in the low-energy description of spin models. Specifically we study here the one-dimensional bilinear-biquadratic spin-one model. An open question for many years about this model is whether it has a non-dimerized fluctuating nematic phase. The dimerization has recently been proposed to be related to Berry phases of the quantum fluctuations. We use an effective low-energy description to calculate the scaling of the dimerization according to this theory, and then verify the predictions using large scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations, giving good evidence that the state is dimerized all the way up to its transition into the ferromagnetic phase. We furthermore discuss the multiplet structure found in the entanglement spectrum of the ground state wave functions.

Ferromagnetism in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model with a synthetic spin-orbit coupling

We study the effect of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by employing the density-matrix renormalization group method. A ferromagnetic long-range order emerges in both Mott insulator and superfluid phases resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry, when the spin-orbit coupling term becomes comparable to the hopping kinetic energy and the inter-component interaction is smaller than the intra-one as well. This novel effect is expected to be detectable with the present realization of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in experiments.

The evolution of magnetic structure driven by a synthetic spin-orbit coupling in two-component Bose-Hubbard model

We study the evolution of magnetic structure driven by a synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a one-dimensional two-component Bose-Hubbard model. In addition to the Mott insulator-superfluid transition, we found in Mott insulator phases a transition from a gapped ferromagnetic phase to a gapless chiral phase by increasing the strength of spin-orbit coupling. Further increasing the spin-orbit coupling drives a transition from the gapless chiral phase to a gapped antiferromagnetic phase. These magnetic structures persist in superfluid phases. In particular, in the chiral Mott insulator and chiral superfluid phases, incommensurability is observed in characteristic correlation functions. These unconventional Mott insulator phase and superfluid phase demonstrate the novel effects arising from the competition between the kinetic energy and the spin-orbit coupling.

Accurate determination of the Gaussian transition in spin-1 chains with single-ion anisotropy

The Gaussian transition in the spin-one Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy is extremely difficult to treat, both analytically and numerically. We introduce an improved DMRG procedure with strict error control, which we use to access very large systems. By considering the bulk entropy, we determine the Gaussian transition point to 4-digit accuracy, $D_{c}/J = 0.96845(8)$, resolving a long-standing debate in quantum magnetism. With this value, we obtain high-precision data for the critical behavior of quantities including the ground-state energy, gap, and transverse string-order parameter, and for the critical exponent, $ν= 1.472(2)$. Applying our improved technique at $J_{z} = 0.5$ highlights essential differences in critical behavior along the Gaussian transition line.

Dynamic and thermodynamic properties of the generalised diamond chain model for azurite

The natural mineral azurite Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 is an interesting spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet. Recently, a generalised diamond chain model has been established as a good description of the magnetic properties of azurite with parameters placing it in a highly frustrated parameter regime. Here we explore further properties of this model for azurite. First, we determine the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum in the absence of a magnetic field and find good agreement with experiments, thus lending further support to the model. Furthermore, we present numerical data for the magnetocaloric effect and predict that strong cooling should be observed during adiabatic (de)magnetisation of azurite in magnetic fields slightly above 30T. Finally, the presence of a dominant dimer interaction in azurite suggests the use of effective Hamiltonians for an effective low-energy description and we propose that such an approach may be useful to fully account for the three-dimensional coupling geometry.

Exact results for intrinsic electronic transport in graphene

We present exact results for the electronic transport properties of graphene sheets connected to two metallic electrodes. Our results, obtained by transfer-matrix methods, are valid for all sheet widths and lengths. In the limit of large width-to-length ratio relevant to recent experiments, we find a Dirac-point conductivity of $2e^2/\sqrt{3}h$ and a sub-Poissonian Fano factor of $2 - 3\sqrt{3}/π\simeq 0.346$ for armchair graphene; for the zigzag geometry these are respectively 0 and 1. Our results reflect essential effects from both the topology of graphene and the electronic structure of the leads, giving a complete microscopic understanding of the unique intrinsic transport in graphene.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions (2D). To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in 1D. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from 1D to 2D physics.

Multi-step approach to microscopic models for frustrated quantum magnets - the case of the natural mineral azurite

The natural mineral azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$ is a frustrated magnet displaying unusual and controversially discussed magnetic behavior. Motivated by the lack of a unified description for this system, we perform a theoretical study based on density functional theory as well as state-of-the-art numerical many-body calculations. We propose an effective generalized spin-1/2 diamond chain model which provides a consistent description of experiments: low-temperature magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, magnetic susceptibility as well as new specific heat measurements. With this study we demonstrate that the balanced combination of first principles with powerful many-body methods successfully describes the behavior of this frustrated material.

Quantized squeezing and even-odd asymmetry of trapped bosons

We investigate the exact nature of the superfluid-to-Mott-insulator crossover for interacting bosons on an optical lattice in a one-dimensional, harmonic trap by high-precision density-matrix renormalization-group calculations. The results reveal an intermediate regime characterized by a cascade of microscopic steps. These arise as a consequence of individual boson "squeezing" events and display an even-odd alternation dependent on the trap symmetry. We discuss the experimental observation of this behavior, which is generic in an external trapping potential.

Nature of Intermediate States between Superfluid and Mott insulator for Interacting Bosons in One-dimension with a Harmonic Trapping Potential

Successive quantum transitions in an intermediate regime are shown to exist between the superfluid and Mott insulating states for interacting bosonic atoms in one dimension with a trapping potential. These transitions, which are caused by the interplay of the trapping potential with the competition between the kinetic energy and the interaction, reveal novel many-body effects as reflected by low-lying excitation behavior, unconventional long-range correlations and an even-odd alternating squeezing process of superfluid bosons into the Mott insulating state. These features, most likely being generic for all dimensions when a trapping potential is involved, are relevant for both experimental observations and physical interpretation of the Mott insulator transition.
