Interlayer magnetic interactions in $π/3$-twisted bilayer CrI$_3$

The interlayer magnetic interaction in bilayer CrI$_3$ plays a crucial role for its device applications. In this work, we studied the interlayer magnetic interaction in $π/3$-twisted bilayer CrI$_3$ using first-principles calculations. Our calculations show that the interlayer coupling can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending crucially on lateral shift. The strongest antiferromagnetic interlayer interaction appears in the $\bar{A}A$-stacking. The magnetic force theory calculations demonstrate that such an antiferromagnetic interaction is dominanted by the $e_g$-$e_g$ channel. Particularly, the interlayer antiferromagnetic interaction is very sensitive to external pressure. This highly tunable interlayer interaction makes $π/3$-twisted bilayer CrI$_3$ a potential building block for magnetic field effect transistors and pressure sensors.

Strain-induced phase diagram of the $S = \frac32$ Kitaev material $\rm{CrSiTe_3}$

The interplay among anisotropic magnetic terms, such as the bond-dependent Kitaev interactions and single-ion anisotropy, plays a key role in stabilizing the finite-temperature ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional compound $\rm{CrSiTe_3}$. While the Heisenberg interaction is predominant in this material, a recent work shows that it is rather sensitive to the compressive strain, leading to a variety of phases, possibly including a sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid [C. Xu, \textit{et. al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{124}, 087205 (2020)]. To further understand these states, we establish the quantum phase diagram of a related bond-directional spin-$3/2$ model by the density-matrix renormalization group method. As the Heisenberg coupling varies from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic, three magnetically ordered phases, i.e., a ferromagnetic phase, a $120^\circ$ phase and an antiferromagnetic phase, appear consecutively. All the phases are separated by first-order phase transitions, as revealed by the kinks in the ground-state energy and the jumps in the magnetic order parameters. However, no positive evidence of the quantum spin liquid state is found and possible reasons are discussed briefly.

Exactly Solvable Kondo Lattice Model in Anisotropic Limit

In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. The former is a melting antiferromagnetic insulator with a strong short-range magnetic fluctuation, while the latter corresponds to a Fermi liquid-like metal. Monte Carlo simulation and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the transition from paramagnetic phases into the antiferromagnetic insulator is a continuous $2D$ Ising transition. Away from half-filling, patterns of spin stripes (inhomogeneous magnetic order) at weak coupling, and phase separation at strong coupling are predicted. With established Ising antiferromagnetism and spin stripe orders, our model may be relevant to a heavy fermion compound CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Hg$_{x}$)$_{5}$ and novel quantum liquid-crystal order in a hidden order compound URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$.

Ferromagnetism in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model with a synthetic spin-orbit coupling

We study the effect of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by employing the density-matrix renormalization group method. A ferromagnetic long-range order emerges in both Mott insulator and superfluid phases resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry, when the spin-orbit coupling term becomes comparable to the hopping kinetic energy and the inter-component interaction is smaller than the intra-one as well. This novel effect is expected to be detectable with the present realization of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in experiments.

Model of Nonadiabatic to Adiabatic Dynamical Quantum Phase Transition in Photoexcited Systems

We study the ultrafast dynamic process in photoexcited systems and find that the Franck-Condon or Landau-Zener tunneling between the photoexcited state and the ground state is abruptly blocked with increasing the state coupling from nonadiabatic to adiabatic limits. The blockage of the tunneling inhibits the photoexcited state from decaying into the thermalized state and results in an emergence of a metastable state, which represents an entanglement of electronic states with different electron-phonon coupling strengths. Applying this model to the investigation of photoexcited half-doped manganites, we show that the quantum critical transition is responsible for more than three orders of magnitude difference in the ground state recovery times following photoirradiation. This model also explains some elusive experimental results such as photoinduced rearrangement of orbital order by structural rather than electronic process and the structural bottleneck of one-quarter period of the Jahn-Teller mode. We demonstrate that in the spin-boson model there exist unexplored regions not covered in the conventional phase diagram.

The evolution of magnetic structure driven by a synthetic spin-orbit coupling in two-component Bose-Hubbard model

We study the evolution of magnetic structure driven by a synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a one-dimensional two-component Bose-Hubbard model. In addition to the Mott insulator-superfluid transition, we found in Mott insulator phases a transition from a gapped ferromagnetic phase to a gapless chiral phase by increasing the strength of spin-orbit coupling. Further increasing the spin-orbit coupling drives a transition from the gapless chiral phase to a gapped antiferromagnetic phase. These magnetic structures persist in superfluid phases. In particular, in the chiral Mott insulator and chiral superfluid phases, incommensurability is observed in characteristic correlation functions. These unconventional Mott insulator phase and superfluid phase demonstrate the novel effects arising from the competition between the kinetic energy and the spin-orbit coupling.

Fractional Quantum Hall States at 1/3 and 5/2 Filling: the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Calculations

In this paper, the density-matrix renormalization group method is employed to investigate the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling fractions $ν=1/3$ and 5/2. We first present benchmark results at both filling fractions for large system sizes to show the accuracy as well as the capability of the numerical algorithm. Furthermore, we show that by keeping a large number of basis states, one can also obtain accurate entanglement spectrum at $ν=5/2$ for large system with electron number up to $N_e=34$, much larger than systems previously studied. Based on a finite-size scaling analysis, we demonstrate that the entanglement gap defined by Li and Haldane is finite in the thermodynamic limit, which characterizes the topological order of the FQHE state.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions (2D). To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in 1D. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from 1D to 2D physics.

Anharmonicity in one-dimensional electron-phonon system

We investigate the effect of anharmonicity on the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein model by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. By calculating the order parameters we find that with and without anharmonicity there is always an transition from a disorder phase to a dimerized phase. Moreover, in the dimerized phase a lattice dimerization and a charge density wave coexist. The anharmonicity represented by the quartic term suppresses the dimerization as well as the charge density wave, while a double-well potential favors the dimerization. In addition, by calculating the correlation exponents we show that the disorder phase is metallic with gapless charge excitations and gapful spin excitations while in the dimerized phase both excitations are gapful.

Midgap States in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains with A Staggered Field

We study low-energy excitations in antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with a staggered field which splits the spectrum into a longitudinal and a transverse branch. Bound states are found to exist inside the field induced gap in both branches. They originate from the edge effects and are inherent to spin-chain materials. The sine-Gordon scaling $h_s^{2/3}|\log h_s|^{1/6}$ ($h_s$: the staggered field) provides an accurate description for the gap and midgap energies in the transverse branch for $S=1/2$ and the midgap energies in both branches for $S=3/2$ over a wide range of magnetic field; however, it can fit other low-energy excitations only at much lower field. Moreover, the integer-spin S=1 chain displays scaling behavior that does not fit this scaling law. These results reveal intriguing features of magnetic excitations in spin-chain materials that deserve further investigation.
