Randomness and Frustration in a S = 1/2 Square-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We explore the interplay between randomness and magnetic frustration in the series of $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg square-lattice compounds Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. Substituting W for Te alters the magnetic interactions dramatically, from strongly nearest-neighbor to next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling. We perform neutron scattering measurements to probe the magnetic ground state and excitations over a range of $x$. We propose a bond-disorder model that reproduces ground states with only short-ranged spin correlations in the mixed compounds. The calculated neutron diffraction patterns and powder spectra agree well with the measured data and allow detailed predictions for future measurements. We conclude that quenched randomness plays the major role in defining the physics of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with frustration being less significant.

Spin dynamics in the square-lattice cupola system Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$

We report high-resolution single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. This material is formed from layers of four-site \cupola" structures, oriented alternately upwards and downwards, which constitute a rather special realization of two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice magnetism. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction within each cupola, or plaquette, unit has a geometry largely unexplored among the numerous studies of magnetic properties in 2D Heisenberg models with spin and spatial anisotropies. We have measured the magnetic excitations at zero field and in fields up to 5 T, finding a complex mode structure with multiple characteristic features that allow us to extract all the relevant magnetic interactions by modelling within the linear spin-wave approximation. We demonstrate that Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is a checkerboard system with almost equal intra- and inter-plaquette couplings, in which the intra-plaquette DM interaction is instrumental both in enforcing robust magnetic order and in opening a large gap at the Brillouin-zone center. We place our observations in the perspective of generalized phase diagrams for spin-1/2 square-lattice models and materials, where exploring anisotropies and frustration as routes to quantum disorder remains a frontier research problem.

Systematic extraction of crystal electric-field effects and quantum magnetic model parameters in triangular rare-earth magnets

A primary goal at the interface of theoretical and experimental quantum magnetism is the investigation of exotic spin states, most notably quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Magnetic rare-earth ions go beyond the straightforward paradigm of geometrical frustration in Heisenberg antiferromagnets by introducing competing energy scales, and in particular their strong spin-orbit coupling creates multiple split crystal electric-field (CEF) levels, leading to anisotropic effective spin models with intrinsic frustration. While rare-earth delafossites have a triangular-lattice geometry, and thus have gained recent attention as candidates for hosting spin-1/2 QSL physics, the reliable extraction of effective spin models from the initial many-parameter CEF spectrum is a hard problem. Using the example of CsYbSe2, we demonstrate the unambiguous extraction of the Stevens-operators coefficients dictating the full CEF spectrum of Yb$^{3+}$ by translating these into parameters with a direct physical interpretation. Specifically, we combine low-field susceptibility measurements with resonant torsion magnetometry experiments in fields up to 60 T to determine a sufficiently large number of physical parameters -- effective Zeeman splittings, anisotropic van Vleck coefficients, and magnetotropic coefficients -- that the set of Stevens-operator coefficients is unique. Our crucial identification of the strong corrections to the Zeeman splitting of Kramers doublets as van Vleck coefficients has direct consequences for the interpretation of all anisotropic magnetic susceptibility measurements. Our results allow us to determine the nature and validity of an effective spin-1/2 model for CsYbSe2, to provide input for theoretical studies of such models on the triangular lattice, and to provide additional materials insight into routes for achieving magnetic frustration and candidate QSL systems in rare-earth compounds.

Triplons, Magnons, and Spinons in a Single Quantum Spin System: SeCuO3

Quantum spin systems exhibit an enormous range of collective excitations, but their spin waves, gapped triplons, fractional spinons, or yet other modes are generally held to be mutually exclusive. Here we show by neutron spectroscopy on SeCuO$_3$ that magnons, triplons, and spinons are present simultaneously. We demonstrate that this is a consequence of a structure consisting of two coupled subsystems and identify all the interactions of a minimal magnetic model. Our results serve qualitatively to open the field of multi-excitation spin systems and quantitatively to constrain the complete theoretical description of one member of this class of materials.

Self-consistent spin-wave analysis of the 1/3 magnetization plateau in the kagome antiferromagnet

We propose a modified spin-wave theory to study the 1/3 magnetization plateau of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. By the self-consistent inclusion of quantum corrections, the 1/3 plateau is stabilized over a broad range of magnetic fields for all spin quantum numbers, S. The values of the critical magnetic fields and the widths of the magnetization plateaus are fully consistent with recent numerical results from exact diagonalization and infinite projected entangled paired states.

Interlayer electronic hybridization leads to exceptional thickness-dependent vibrational properties in few-layer black phosphorus

Stacking two-dimensional (2D) materials into multi-layers or heterostructures, known as van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy, is an essential degree of freedom for tuning their properties on demand. Few-layer black phosphorus (FLBP), a material with high potential for nano- and optoelectronics applications, appears to have interlayer couplings much stronger than graphene and other 2D systems. Indeed, these couplings call into question whether the stacking of FLBP can be governed only by vdW interactions, which is of crucial importance for epitaxy and property refinement. Here, we perform a theoretical investigation of the vibrational properties of FLBP, which reflect directly its interlayer coupling, by discussing six Raman-observable phonons, including three optical, one breathing, and two shear modes. With increasing sample thickness, we find anomalous redshifts of the frequencies for each optical mode but a blueshift for the armchair shear mode. Our calculations also show splitting of the phonon branches, due to anomalous surface phenomena, and strong phonon-phonon coupling. By computing uniaxial stress effects, inter-atomic force constants, and electron densities, we provide a compelling demonstration that these properties are the consequence of strong and highly directional interlayer interactions arising from electronic hybridization of the lone electron-pairs of FLBP, rather than from vdW interactions. This exceptional interlayer coupling mechanism controls the stacking stability of BP layers and thus opens a new avenue beyond vdW epitaxy for understanding the design of 2D heterostructures.

Multiplicative logarithmic corrections to quantum criticality in three-dimensional dimerized antiferromagnets

We investigate the quantum phase transition in an $S = 1/2$ dimerized Heisenberg antiferromagnet in three spatial dimensions. By performing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and detailed finite-size scaling analyses, we obtain high-precision results for the quantum critical properties at the transition from the magnetically disordered dimer-singlet phase to the antiferromagnetically ordered Néel phase. This transition breaks O($N$) symmetry with $N = 3$ in $D = 3 + 1$ dimensions. This is the upper critical dimension, where multiplicative logarithmic corrections to the leading mean-field critical properties are expected; we extract these corrections, establishing their precise forms for both the zero-temperature staggered magnetization, $m_s$, and the Néel temperature, $T_N$. We present a scaling Ansatz for $T_N$, including logarithmic corrections, which agrees with our data and indicates exact linearity with $m_s$, implying a complete decoupling of quantum and thermal fluctuation effects even arbitrarily close to the quantum critical point. We also demonstrate the predicted $N$-independent leading and subleading logarithmic corrections in the size-dependence of the staggered magnetic susceptibility. These logarithmic scaling forms have not previously been identified or verified by unbiased numerical methods and we discuss their relevance to experimental studies of dimerized quantum antiferromagnets such as TlCuCl$_3$.

Accurate determination of the Gaussian transition in spin-1 chains with single-ion anisotropy

The Gaussian transition in the spin-one Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy is extremely difficult to treat, both analytically and numerically. We introduce an improved DMRG procedure with strict error control, which we use to access very large systems. By considering the bulk entropy, we determine the Gaussian transition point to 4-digit accuracy, $D_{c}/J = 0.96845(8)$, resolving a long-standing debate in quantum magnetism. With this value, we obtain high-precision data for the critical behavior of quantities including the ground-state energy, gap, and transverse string-order parameter, and for the critical exponent, $ν= 1.472(2)$. Applying our improved technique at $J_{z} = 0.5$ highlights essential differences in critical behavior along the Gaussian transition line.

Quantized squeezing and even-odd asymmetry of trapped bosons

We investigate the exact nature of the superfluid-to-Mott-insulator crossover for interacting bosons on an optical lattice in a one-dimensional, harmonic trap by high-precision density-matrix renormalization-group calculations. The results reveal an intermediate regime characterized by a cascade of microscopic steps. These arise as a consequence of individual boson "squeezing" events and display an even-odd alternation dependent on the trap symmetry. We discuss the experimental observation of this behavior, which is generic in an external trapping potential.
