Finite temperature $0^{-+}$ glueball spectrum from non-susy D3 brane of Type IIB string theory

Here, we calculate the pseudo-scalar glueball mass at finite temperature from the holographic QCD in $3+1$ dimensions. The decoupled geometry of the non-supersymmetric (non-susy) D$3$ brane at the finite temperature which is the solution of the type-II supergravity is considered as the dual theory of QCD. We calculate the mass spectrum from the axion fluctuation in this gravity background using WKB approximations. Approximating the WKB equation for various orders of mass, we derive the analytical expressions of the mass spectrum of $0^{-+}$ at the finite temperature. Finally we evaluate the masses numerically as $m_{-+}=2.5$GeV and $m_{-+}^*=3.8$GeV from the complete WKB equation. The mass of a given state is found to decrease with increasing temperature and becomes zero at confinement -deconfinement transition temperature which is consistent with the idea of deconfinement and also matches with some recent lattice results. From this temperature variation, the QCD transition point is found to be about $186$MeV.

Topological shadows and complexity of islands in multiboundary wormholes

Recently, remarkable progress in recovering the Page curve of an evaporating black hole (BH) in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity has been achieved through use of Quantum Extremal surfaces (QES). Multi-boundary Wormhole (MbW) models have been crucial in parallel model building in three dimensions. Motivated by this we here use the latter models to compute the subregion complexity of the Hawking quanta of the evaporating BH in AdS$_{3}$ and obtain the Page curve associated with this information theoretic measure. We use three- and $n$-boundary wormhole constructions to elucidate our computations of volumes below the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) surfaces at different times. Time is represented by the growing length of the throat horizons corresponding to smaller exits of the multi-boundary wormhole and the evaporating bigger exit shrinks with evolving time. We track the change in choice of HRT surfaces with time and plot the volume with time. The smooth transition of Page curve is realized by a discontinuous jump at Page time in volume subregion complexity plots and the usual Page transition is realized as a phase transition due to the inclusion of the island in this context. We discuss mathematical intricacies and physical insights regarding the inclusion of the extra volume at Page time. The analysis is backed by calculations and lessons from kinematic space and tensor networks.

Decoupling of gravity on non-susy D$p$ branes

We study the graviton scattering in the background of non-susy D$p$ branes of type II string theories consisting of a metric, a dilaton and a $(p+1)$ form gauge field. We show numerically that in these backgrounds graviton experiences a scattering potential which takes the form of an infinite barrier in the low energy (near brane) limit for $p\leq 5$ and therefore is never able to reach the branes. This shows, contrary to what is known in the literature, that gravity indeed decouples from the non-susy D$p$ branes for $p \leq 5$. For non-susy D6 brane, gravity couples as there is no such barrier for the potential. To give further credence to our claim we solve the scattering equation in some situation analytically and calculate the graviton absorption cross-sections on the non-susy branes and show that they vanish for $p \leq 4$ in the low energy limit. This shows, as in the case of BPS branes, that gravity does decouple for non-susy D$p$ branes for $p\leq 4$ but it does not decouple for D6 brane as the potential here is always attractive. We argue for the non-susy D5 brane that depending on one of the parameters of the solution gravity either always decouples (unlike the BPS D5 brane) or it decouples when the energy of the graviton is below certain critical value, otherwise it couples, very similar to BPS D5 brane.

Space-like Dp branes: accelerating cosmologies versus conformally de Sitter space-time

We consider the space-like D$p$ brane solutions of type II string theories having isometries ISO$(p+1)$ $\times$ SO$(8-p,1)$. These are asymptotically flat solutions or in other words, the metrics become flat at the time scale $τ\gg τ_0$. On the other hand, when $τ\sim τ_0$, we get $(p+1)+1$ dimensional flat FLRWmetrics upon compactification on a $(8-p)$ dimensional hyperbolic space with time dependent radii. We show that the resultant $(p+1)+1$ dimensional metrics describe transient accelerating cosmologies for all $p$ from 1 to 6, i.e., from $(2+1)$ to $(7+1)$ space-time dimensions. We show how the acceleration changes with the interplay of the various parameters characterizing the solutions in $(3+1)$ dimensions. Finally, for $τ\ll τ_0$, after compactification on $(8-p)$ dimensional hyperbolic space, the resultant metrics are shown to take the form of $(p+1)+1$ dimensional de Sitter spaces upto a conformal transformation. Cosmologies here are decelerating, but, only in a particular conformal frame we get eternal acceleration.

Conformally de Sitter space from anisotropic SD3-brane of type IIB string theory

We construct a four dimensional de Sitter space upto a conformal transformation by compactifying the anisotropic SD3-brane solution of type IIB string theory on a six dimensional product space of the form $H_5 \times S^1$, where $H_5$ is a five dimensional hyperbolic space and $S^1$ is a circle. The radius of the hyperbolic space is chosen to be constant. The radius of the circle and the dilaton in four dimensions are time dependent and not constant in general. By different choices of parameters characterizing the SD3-brane solution either the dilaton or the radius of the circle can be made constant but not both. The form-field is also non-vanishing in general, but it can be made to vanish without affecting the solution. This construction might be useful for a better understanding of dS/CFT correspondence as well as for cosmology.

Entanglement thermodynamics for an excited state of Lifshitz system

A class of (2+1)-dimensional quantum many body system characterized by an anisotropic scaling symmetry (Lifshitz symmetry) near their quantum critical point can be described by a (3+1)-dimensional dual gravity theory with negative cosmological constant along with a massive vector field, where the scaling symmetry is realized by the metric as an isometry. We calculate the entanglement entropy of an excited state of such a system holographically, i.e., from the asymptotic perturbation of the gravity dual using the prescription of Ryu and Takayanagi, when the subsystem is sufficiently small. With suitable identifications, we show that this entanglement entropy satisfies an energy conservation relation analogous to the first law of thermodynamics. The non-trivial massive vector field here plays a crucial role and contributes to an additional term in the energy relation.

Interpolating solution from AdS$_5$ to hyperscaling violating Lifshitz space-time

We construct two interpolating solutions in type II string theory which interpolate between an AdS$_5$ in the UV and a hyperscaling violating three (spatial) dimensional Lifshitz space-time in the IR. The first solution is non-supersymmetric and is obtained from a known intersecting non-supersymmetric D3-brane with chargeless D0-brane solution of type IIB string theory, by restricting some parameters characterizing the solution and going to a new coordinate. In the IR the dilaton is non-constant in general and the metric is three (spatial) dimensional hyperscaling violating Lifshitz with dynamical critical exponent $z=(3+3γ)/(3-γ)$ and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ= 12/(3-γ)$, where $γ$ is a real parameter and can take continuous values from $-1$ to $+1$. At the two extreme values, i.e., for $γ= \pm 1$, the dilaton is constant. The second solution is supersymmetric and is obtained from the known F-D2 bound state solution of type IIA string theory by zooming into a particular region of space. In the UV, the proper description is given in a T-dual frame which is AdS$_5$, whereas in the IR, it gives a three dimensional hyperscaling violating Lifshitz with $z=3$ and $θ=2=d-1$.

Modification of phase structure of black D6 branes in a canonical ensemble and its origin

It is well known that charged black $Dp$ branes of type II string theory share a universal phase structure of van der Waals$-$Maxwell liquid-gas type except $D5$ and $D6$ branes. Interestingly, the phase structure of $D5$ and $D6$ branes can be changed to the universal form with the inclusion of particular delocalized charged lower-dimensional branes. For $D5$ branes one needs to introduce delocalized $D1$ branes, and for $D6$ branes, one needs to introduce delocalized $D0$ branes to obtain the universal structure. In a previous paper [J. High Energy Phys. {\bf 04} (2013) 100] Lu with Wei study the phase structure of black $D6$ branes with the introduction of delocalized $D0$ branes in a special case when their charges are equal and the dilaton charge vanishes. In this paper, we look at the phase structure of the black $D6/D0$ system with the generic values of the parameters, which makes the analysis more involved but the structure more rich. We also provide reasons why the respective modifications of the phase structures to the universal form for the black $D5$ and $D6$ branes occur when specific delocalized lower-dimensional branes are introduced.

From AdS to Schrödinger/Lifshitz dual space-times without or with hyperscaling violation

It is observed that the (intersecting) branes of M/string theory, which are known to give AdS geometry (directly or upto a conformal transformation) in the near horizon limit, do also lead to Schr\" odinger/Lifshitz dual space-times (without or with hyperscaling violation) upon using appropriate solution generating transformation and dimensional reduction. We show that the dynamical exponents of the Schr\" odinger and the Lifshitz space-times obtained in this way always add upto 2. We illustrate this by several examples, including M2-, M5-branes of M-theory and D$(p+1)$-branes ($p\neq 4$, since in this case the near horizon limit does not give AdS geometry) of string theory as well as many of their intersecting solutions. The Schr\" odinger space-time can be obtained by the standard wave generating technique along one of the brane directions (for single brane) or one of the common brane directions (for intersecting branes) and then interchanging the light-cone coordinates by double Wick rotations, whereas, the Lifshitz space-time can be obtained by dimensionally reducing (for M-theory) along the wave direction or taking T-duality (for string theory) along the same direction. We thus obtain Schr\" odinger/Lifshitz dual space-times without or with hyperscaling violation from the same M/string theory solutions and they preserve some fraction of the supersymmetry.

Holographic entanglement entropy of the near horizon 1/4 BPS F-D$p$ bound states

It was shown in Dey and Roy (2012) that the near horizon limit of the 1/4 BPS threshold F-D$p$ (for $0\leq p \leq 5$, $p \neq 4$) bound state solutions of type II string theories give rise to space-time metrics endowed with Lifshitz scaling along with hyperscaling violation. Here we compute the holographic entanglement entropy of this system for all $p \neq 4$ (for $p=4$ the space-time has AdS$_2$ structure). For $p=3,5$, we get the expected area law behavior of the entanglement entropy. For $p=0,1$, the entanglement entropy has new area law violations and has the behavior which is in between the linear and logarithmic behaviors. For $p=2$, we get a logarithmic violation of the area law. We also compute the entanglement entropy at finite temperature and show that as the temperature rises, the entanglement entropy makes a crossover to the thermal entropy of the system. We thus obtain the string theoretic realization of holographic EE and various of its aspects noted earlier for generic metric with hyperscaling violation.

Lifshitz metric with hyperscaling violation from NS5-Dp states in string theory

In our previous papers we have shown how Lifshitz-like space-time (space-time having a Lifshitz scaling along with a hyperscaling violation) can arise by taking near horizon limits of certain intersecting solutions (F-string with D$p$-branes and also with two D-branes) of string theory. In this paper we construct intersecting bound state solutions in the form of NS5-D$p$-branes (with $1\leq p \leq 6$) of type II string theories. These are 1/4 BPS and threshold bound states unlike the known NS5-D$p$ bound states which are 1/2 BPS and non-threshold. We show that the near horizon limits of these solutions also lead to Lifshitz-like space-time with the dynamical scaling exponent $z=0$ and the hyperscaling violation exponent $θ=9-p$. The spatial dimension of the boundary theory is $d=7-p$. The dilatons in these theories are not constant in general (except for $p=5$) and therefore produce RG flows. So, we also consider the strong coupling phases of these theories and find that these phases also have similar Lifshitz-like structures, except for $p=2$, where it has an AdS$_3$ structure.

Zero sound in strange metals with hyperscaling violation from holography

Hyperscaling violating `strange metal' phase of heavy fermion compounds can be described holographically by probe D-branes in the background of a Lifshitz space-time (dynamical exponent $z$ and spatial dimensions $d$) with hyperscaling violation (corresponding exponent $θ$). Without the hyperscaling violation, strange metals are known to exhibit zero sound mode for $z<2$ analogous to the Fermi liquids. In this paper, we study its fate in the presence of hyperscaling violation and find that in this case the zero sound mode exists for $z < 2(1+|θ|/d)$, where the positivity of the specific heat and the null energy condition of the background dictate that $θ<0$ and $z\geq 1$. However, for $z \geq 2(1+|θ|/d)$, there is no well-defined quasiparticle for the zero sound. The systems behave like Fermi liquid for $2|θ|=dz$ and like Bose liquid for $2|θ| = qdz$ (where $q$ is the number of spatial dimensions along which D-branes are extended in the background space), but in general they behave as a new kind of quantum liquid. We also compute the AC conductivity of the systems and briefly comment on the results.

Calculating the jet quenching parameter in the plasma of NCYM theory from gauge/gravity duality

A particular decoupling limit of non-extremal (D1, D3) brane bound state system of type IIB string theory is known to give the gravity dual of space-space non- commutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theory at finite temperature. We use a string probe in this background to compute the jet quenching parameter in the strongly coupled plasma of hot non-commutative Yang-Mills theory in (3+1)-dimensions from gauge/gravity duality. We give the expressions for the jet quenching parameter for both small and large non-commutativity. For small non-commutativity, we find that the value of the jet quenching parameter gets reduced from its commutative value. The reduction is enhanced with temperature as T^{7} for fixed non-commutativity and the fixed 't Hooft coupling. We further generalize the results for the non-commutative Yang-Mills theories in diverse dimensions.

Intersecting D-branes and Lifshitz-like space-time

In a previous paper (Dey and Roy, arXiv:1203.5381) we have shown how Lifshitz-like space-times (space-times having Lifshitz scaling with hyperscaling violation) arise from 1/4 BPS, threshold F-D$p$ bound state solutions of type II string theories in the near horizon limit. In this paper we show that similar structures also arise from the near horizon limit of 1/4 BPS, threshold intersecting D-brane solutions of type II string theories. Some of these solutions are standard (D$p$-D($p+4$) for $p=0, 2$) and some are non-standard (D$p$-D($p+2)$ for $p = 1, 2, 3$) including D2-D2$'$, D3-D3$'$ and D4-D4$'$ solutions. The dilatons of these solutions in general run (except in D2-D4 and D3-D3$'$ cases) and produce RG flows. We discuss the phase structures of these solutions. D2-D4 and D3-D3$'$ in the near horizon limit do not produce Lifshitz-like space-time, but give AdS$_3$ spaces.

Lifshitz-like space-time from intersecting branes in string/M theory

We construct 1/4 BPS, threshold F-D$p$ bound states (with $0\leq p \leq 5$) of type II string theories by applying S- and T-dualities to the D1-D5 system of type IIB string theory. These are different from the known 1/2 BPS, non-threshold F-D$p$ bound states. The near horizon limits of these solutions yield Lifshitz-like space-times with varying dynamical critical exponent $z=2(5-p)/(4-p)$, for $p\neq 4$, along with the hyperscaling violation exponent $θ= p - (p-2)/(4-p)$, showing how Lifshitz-like space-time can be obtained from string theory. The dilatons are in general non-constant (except for $p=1$). We discuss the holographic RG flows and the phase structures of these solutions. For $p=4$, we do not get a Lifshitz-like space-time, but the near horizon limit in this case leads to an AdS$_2$ space.

Wilson loops in noncommutative Yang-Mills theory using gauge/gravity duality

By using the gauge/gravity duality and the Maldacena prescription we compute the expectation values of the Wilson loops in noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theory in (3+1) dimensions. We consider both the time-like and the light-like Wilson loops. The gravity dual background is given by a particular decoupling limit of (D1,D3) bound state of type IIB string theory. We obtain the velocity dependent quark-antiquark potential and numerically study how the dipole length and the potential change with velocity (for 0 < v < 1, i.e., the Wilson loop is time-like) of the dipole as well as noncommutativity. We discuss and compare the results with the known commutative results. We also obtain an analytic expression for the screening length when the rapidity is large and the noncommutativity parameter is small with the product remaining small. When v \rightarrow 1, the time-like Wilson loop becomes light-like and in that case we obtain the form of the jet quenching parameter for the strongly coupled noncommutative Yang-Mills plasma which matches with our earlier results obtained using different method.

Accelerating cosmologies from M/String theory compactifications

We point out that the solution of $(4+n)$-dimensional gravity coupled to the dilaton and an $n$-form field strength can give rise to a flat 4-dimensional universe (with a scale factor) of the type proposed recently under time dependent compactifications. The compact internal spaces could be hyperbolic, flat or spherical and the solution is identical to the space-like two brane or S2-brane. As has been shown previously for SM2 solution with a fixed field strength we show that for $n=7$ (where the dilaton is vanishing and with a general field strength), 6 the corresponding SM2 and SD2 solutions can give accelerating cosmologies in Einstein frame for both hyperbolic and flat internal spaces, thereby meeting the challenge of obtaining such a solution from M/String theory compactifications.

Phase structure of black branes in grand canonical ensemble

This is a companion paper of our previous work [1] where we studied the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat black $p$-branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions $D$ in a canonical ensemble. In this work we study the thermodynamics and phase structure of the same in a grand canonical ensemble. Since the boundary data in two cases are different (for the grand canonical ensemble boundary potential is fixed instead of the charge as in canonical ensemble) the stability analysis and the phase structure in the two cases are quite different. In particular, we find that there exists an analog of one-variable analysis as in canonical ensemble, which gives the same stability condition as the rather complicated known (but generalized from black holes to the present case) two-variable analysis. When certain condition for the fixed potential is satisfied, the phase structure of charged black $p$-branes is in some sense similar to that of the zero charge black $p$-branes in canonical ensemble up to a certain temperature. The new feature in the present case is that above this temperature, unlike the zero-charge case, the stable brane phase no longer exists and `hot flat space' is the stable phase here. In the grand canonical ensemble there is an analog of Hawking-Page transition, even for the charged black $p$-brane, as opposed to the canonical ensemble. Our study applies to non-dilatonic as well as dilatonic black $p$-branes in $D$ space-time dimensions.

Phase transitions and critical behavior of black branes in canonical ensemble

We study the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat non-dilatonic as well as dilatonic black branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions ($D$). We consider the canonical ensemble and so the charge inside the cavity and the temperature at the wall are fixed. We analyze the stability of the black brane equilibrium states and derive the phase structures. For the zero charge case we find an analog of Hawking-Page phase transition for these black branes in arbitrary dimensions. When the charge is non-zero, we find that below a critical value of the charge, the phase diagram has a line of first-order phase transition in a certain range of temperatures which ends up at a second order phase transition point (critical point) as the charge attains the critical value. We calculate the critical exponents at that critical point. Although our discussion is mainly concerned with the non-dilatonic branes, we show how it easily carries over to the dilatonic branes as well.

The enriched phase structure of black branes in canonical ensemble

It is found that a necessary completion of phase structure of D-dimensional charged black p-brane ($p > 0$) in a cavity requires two additional thermodynamical phases, the so-called "bubble of nothing" and/or the extremal brane, in canonical ensemble. This finding resolves the puzzle about the missing phases which are needed for the underlying phase diagram when $\tilde d = D - p - 3 \leq 2$ and gives a new (bubble) phase which can become globally stable when $\tilde d > 2$. An analog of Hawking-Page transition is also found among other new phase transitions, giving a complete phase structure in this setup.

Wilson loops in (p+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theories using gravity/gauge theory correspondence

We compute the expectation values of both the time-like and the light-like Wilson loops in a strongly coupled plasma of (p+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theories using gravity/gauge theory correspondence. From the time-like Wilson loop we obtain the velocity dependent quark-antiquark potential where the dipole is moving through the plasma with an arbitrary velocity 0<v<1 and also obtain expressions for the screening lengths. When the velocity v--> 1, the Wilson loop becomes light-like and we obtain the form of the jet quenching parameter in those strongly coupled plasma.

Drag force in a hot non-relativistic, non-commutative Yang-Mills plasma

We apply the standard technique of Null Melvin Twist to the non-extremal (D1, D3) bound state configuration of type IIB string theory. Under a particular decoupling limit, such configuration represents the gravity dual of the non-relativistic, non-commutative Yang-Mills theory at a finite temperature. We then use the AdS/CFT and the string probe approach to compute the drag force on an external quark moving through such a hot non-relativistic, non-commutative YM plasma. We discuss various limiting cases to show the interplay between the non-relativistic as well as the non-commutative effect of the general drag force expression.

Remarks on the instability of black Dp-branes

We show that for black D$p$-branes having charge $Q$ and Hawking temperature $T$, the product $QT^{7-p}$ is bounded from above for $p\leq 5$ and is unbounded for $p=6$. While the maximum occurs at some finite value of a parameter for $p \leq 4$, it occurs at infinity of the parameter for $p=5$. As a consequence, for fixed charge, there are two black D$p$-branes (for $p\leq 4$) at any given temperature less than its maximum value, and when the temperature is maximum there is one black D$p$-brane. For $p=5$, there is only one black D5-brane at a given temperature less than its maximum value, whereas, for $p=6$, since there is no bound for the temperature, there is always a black D6-brane solution at a given temperature. Of the two black D$p$-branes (for $p\leq 4$), one is large which is shown to be thermodynamically unstable and the other is small which is stable. But for $p=5,6$, the black D$p$-branes are always thermodynamically unstable. The stable, small black D$p$-brane, however, under certain conditions, can become unstable quantum mechanically and decay either to a BPS D$p$-brane or to a Kaluza-Klein "bubble of nothing" through closed string tachyon condensation. The small D5, D6 branes, although classically unstable, have the same fate under similar conditions.

Intersecting non-SUSY branes and closed string tachyon condensation

Following \cite{Bai:2006vv} we here consider the supergravity solutions representing the charged non-supersymmetric $p$-brane (for $1\leq p \leq 6$) intersecting with chargeless non-supersymmetric 1-brane and 0-brane of type II string theories. We show how these solutions nicely interpolate between black $p$-branes and the Kaluza-Klein "bubble of nothing" (BON) by continuously varying some parameters characterizing the solutions from one set of values to another. By performing a time symmetric general bubble initial data analysis, we show that the interpolation implies a possible transition from black $p$-branes to KK BON only for $p\leq 4$, as in these cases there exist locally stable static bubbles under certain conditions. However, for $p>4$, black branes always decay into dynamical bubbles. Contrary to what is known in the literature, we argue that under certain conditions, the mechanism causing this transition to stable static bubbles can be the closed string tachyon condensation for all $p\leq 4$. We also show that the configurations indeed contain (chargeless) F-strings required for the closed string tachyons to appear causing the transitions to occur.

Non-supersymmetric D1/D5, F/NS5 and closed string tachyon condensation

We construct the intersecting non-supersymmetric (non-susy) D1/D5 solution of type IIB string theory. While, as usual, the solution is charged under an electric two-form and an electric six-form gauge field, it also contains a non-susy chargeless (non-BPS) D0-brane. The S-dual of this solution is the non-susy F/NS5 solution. We show how these solutions nicely interpolate between the corresponding black (or non-extremal) solutions and the Kaluza-Klein (KK) "bubble of nothing" (BON) by continuously changing some parameters characterizing the solutions from one set of values to another. We show, by a time symmetric general bubble initial data analysis, that the final bubbles in these cases are static and stable and the interpolations can be physically interpreted as closed string tachyon condensation. As special cases, we recover the transition of two charge black F-string to BON, considered by Horowitz, and also the transition from AdS$_3$ black hole to global AdS$_3$.

Intersecting non-SUSY $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane as black $p$-brane

Unlike BPS $p$-brane, non-supersymmetric (non-susy) $p$-brane could be either charged or chargeless. As envisaged in [hep-th/0503007], we construct an intersecting non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless non-susy $q$-brane by taking T-dualities along the delocalized directions of the non-susy $q$-brane solution delocalized in $(p-q)$ transverse directions (where $p\geq q$). In general these solutions are characterized by four independent parameters. We show that when $q=0$ the intersecting charged as well as chargeless non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane can be mapped by a coordinate transformation to black $p$-brane when two of the four parameters characterizing the solution take some special values. For definiteness we restrict our discussion to space-time dimensions $d=10$. We observe that parameters characterizing the black brane and the related dynamics are in general in a different branch of the parameter space from those describing the brane-antibrane annihilation process. We demonstrate this in the two examples, namely, the non-susy D0-brane and the intersecting non-susy D4 and D0-branes, where the solutions with the explicit microscopic descriptions are known.

Space-like branes, accelerating cosmologies and the near `horizon' limit

It is known that there exist two different classes of time dependent solutions in the form of space-like (or S)-branes in the low energy M/string theory. Accelerating cosmologies are known to arise from S-branes in one class, but not in the other where the time-like holography in the dS/CFT type correspondence may be more transparent. We show how the accelerating cosmologies arise from S-branes in the other class. Although we do not get the de Sitter structure in the lowest order supergravity, the near `horizon' ($t\to 0$) limits of these S-branes are the generalized Kasner metric.

Dimensional reductions of M-theory S-branes to string theory S-branes

We study both the direct and the double dimensional reduction of space-like branes of M-theory and point out some peculiarities in the process unlike their time-like counterpart. In particular, we show how starting from SM2 and SM5-brane solutions we can obtain SD2 and SNS5-brane as well as SNS1 and SD4-brane solutions of string theory by direct and double dimensional reductions respectively. In the former case we need to use delocalized SM-brane solutions, whereas in the latter case we need to use anisotropic SM-brane solutions in the directions which are compactified.

On supergravity solutions of space-like Dp-branes

Recently the time dependent solutions of type II supergravities in $d = 10$, with the metric having the symmetry $ISO(p+1) \times SO(8-p, 1)$ have been given by two groups (Chen-Gal'tsov-Gutperle (CGG), [hep-th/0204071] and Kruczenski-Myers-Peet (KMP), [hep-th/0204144]). The supergravity solutions correspond to space-like D$p$-branes in type II string theory. While the CGG solution is a four parameter solution, the KMP solution is a three parameter solution and so in general they are different. This difference can be attributed to the fact that unlike the CGG solution, KMP uses a specific boundary condition for the metric and the dilaton field. It is shown that when we impose the boundary conditions used in the KMP solution to the CGG solution then both become three parameter solutions and they map to each other under a coordinate transformation along with a Hodge duality of the field strength. We also give the relations between the parameters characterizing the two solutions.

(NS5,Dp) and (NS5,D(p+2),Dp) bound states of type IIB and type IIA string theories

Starting from the (q,p) 5-brane solution of type IIB string theory, we here construct the low energy configuration corresponding to (NS5,Dp)-brane bound states (for $0\leq p\leq 4$) using the T-duality map between type IIB and type IIA string theories. We use the SL(2,Z) symmetry on the type IIB bound state (NS5,D3) to construct (NS5,D5,D3) bound state. We then apply T-duality transformation again on this state to construct the bound states of the form (NS5,D(p+2),Dp) (for $0\leq p\leq 2$) of both type IIB and type IIA string theories. We give the tension formula for these states and show that they form non-threshold bound states. All these states preserve half of the space-time supersymmetries of string theories. We also briefly discuss the ODp-limits corresponding to (NS5,Dp) bound state solutions.

We study a BPS configuration in which four strings (of different type) meet at a point in $N = 2, D = 8$ supergravity, i.e., the low energy effective theory of $T^2$-compactified type II string theory. We demonstrate that the charge conservation of the four strings implies the vanishing of the net force (due to the tensions of various strings) at the junction and vice versa, using the tension formula for $SL(3, Z)$ strings obtained recently by the present authors. We then show that a general 4-string junction preserves 1/8 of the spacetime supersymmetries. Using 4-string junctions as building blocks, we construct a string network which also preserves 1/8 of the spacetime supersymmetries.

SL(2, Z) Multiplets of Type II Superstrings in $D < 10$

It has been shown recently that the toroidally compactified type IIB string effective action possesses an SL(2, R) invariance. Using this symmetry we construct an infinite family of macroscopic string-like solutions permuted by SL(2, Z) group for type II superstrings in $4 \leq D < 10$. These solutions, which formally look very similar to the corresponding solutions in $D = 10$, are characterized by two relatively prime integers corresponding to the `electric' charges associated with the two antisymmetric tensor fields of the strings. Stability of these solutions is discussed briefly in the light of charge conservation and the tension gap equation.

An SL(2, Z) Multiplet of Black Holes in $D = 4$ Type II Superstring Theory

It is well-known that the conjectured SL(2, Z) invariance of type IIB string theory in ten dimensions also persists in lower dimensions when the theory is compactified on tori. By making use of this recent observation, we construct an infinite family of magnetically charged black hole solutions of type II superstring theory in four space-time dimensions. These solutions are characterized by two relatively prime integers corresponding to the magnetic charges associated with the two gauge fields (from NS-NS and R-R sectors) of the theory and form an SL(2, Z) multiplet. In the extremal limit these solutions are stable as they are prevented from decaying into black holes of lower masses by a `mass gap' equation.

On S-Duality of Toroidally Compactified Type IIB String Effective Action

It has been shown recently that the toroidally compactified type IIB string effective action possesses an SL(2, R) invariance as a consequence of the corresponding symmetry in ten dimensions when the self-dual five-form field strength is set to zero. By working in the string frame we clarify how a Z$_2$ subgroup of this SL(2, R) group responsible for producing the strong-weak coupling duality in the ten dimensional theory produces the same symmetry for the reduced theory. In the absence of the full covariant action of type IIB supergravity theory, we show that the T-dual version of type IIA string effective action (including the R-R terms) in D=9 also possesses the SL(2, R) invariance indicating that this symmetry is present for the full type IIB string effective action compactified on torus.

Orbifolds of M-Theory and Type II String Theories in Two Dimensions

We consider several orbifold compactifications of M-theory and their corresponding type II duals in two space-time dimensions. In particular, we show that while the orbifold compactification of M-theory on $T^9/J_9$ is dual to the orbifold compactification of type IIB string theory on $T^8/I_8$, the same orbifold $T^8/I_8$ of type IIA string theory is dual to M-theory compactified on a smooth product manifold $K3 \times T^5$. Similarly, while the orbifold compactification of M-theory on $(K3 \times T^5)/σ... J_5$ is dual to the orbifold compactification of type IIB string theory on $(K3 \times T^4)/σ... I_4$, the same orbifold of type IIA string theory is dual to the orbifold $T^4 \times (K3 \times S^1)/σ... J_1$ of M-theory. The spectrum of various orbifold compactifications of M-theory and type II string theories on both sides are compared giving evidence in favor of these duality conjectures. We also comment on a connection between Dasgupta-Mukhi-Witten conjecture and Dabholkar-Park-Sen conjecture for the six-dimensional orbifold models of type IIB string theory and M-theory.

The Zero Curvature Formulation of TB, sTB Hierarchy and Topological Algebras

A particular dispersive generalization of long water wave equation in $1+1$ dimensions, which is important in the study of matrix models without scaling limit, known as two--Boson (TB) equation, as well as the associated hierarchy has been derived from the zero curvature condition on the gauge group $SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)$. The supersymmetric extension of the two--Boson (sTB) hierarchy has similarly been derived from the zero curvature condition associated with the gauge supergroup $OSp(2|2)$. Topological algebras arise naturally as the second Hamiltonian structure of these classical integrable systems, indicating a close relationship of these models with 2d topological field theories.

The Lax Operator Approach for the Virasoro and the W-Constraints in the Generalized KdV Hierarchy

We show directly in the Lax operator approach how the Virasoro and W-constraints on the $τ$-function arise in the $p$-reduced KP hierarchy or generalized KdV hierarchy. In partiacular, we consider the KdV and Boussinesq hierarchy to show that the Virasoro and W-constraints follow from the string equation by expanding the ``additional symmetry" operator in terms of the Lax operator. We also mention how this method could be generalized for higher KdV hierarchies.
