Generating a dynamical M2 brane from super-gravitons in a pp-wave background

We present a detail study of dynamically generating a M2 brane from super-gravitons (or D0 branes) in a pp-wave background possessing maximal spacetime SUSY. We have three kinds of dynamical solutions depending on the excess energy which appears as an order parameter signalling a critical phenomenon about the solutions. As the excess energy is below a critical value, we have two branches of the solution, one can have its size zero while the other cannot for each given excess energy. However there can be an instanton tunnelling between the two. Once the excess energy is above the critical value, we have a single solution whose dynamical behavior is basically independent of the background chosen and whose size can be zero at some instant. A by product of this study is that the size of particles or extended objects can grow once there is a non-zero excess energy even without the presence of a background flux, therefore lending support to the spacetime uncertainty principle.

How to reveal the nature of three or more pentaquark states?

Within the chiral unitary approach and with the constraints of heavy quark spin symmetry, we study the coupled channel interactions of ${\bar D}^{(*)}Σ_c^{(*)}$ channels, close to whose thresholds three pentaquark-like $P_c$ states have been reported by the LHCb Collaboration. In the present work, we take into account the contributions of pion exchanges via box diagrams to the interaction potentials, and therefore lift the degeneracy in the masses of ${\bar D}^*Σ_c^{(*)}$ spin multiplets. Fitting the $J/ψp$ invariant mass distributions in the $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψK^- p$ decay, we find that the LHCb pentaquark states can not be reproduced in the direct $J/ψp$ production in the $Λ_b^0$ decay, and can only be indirectly produced in the final state interactions of the $Λ_b^0$ decay products, ${\bar D}^*Σ_c^{(*)}$, which further supports the nature of these states as $\bar{D}Σ_c$ molecules. Based on the fit results obtained, we study the partial decay widths/branching ratios to other decay channels, $\bar{D}^* Λ_c$, $\bar{D} Λ_c$, and $η_c N$, and the corresponding invariant mass distributions. The resonances with $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^-$, $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and the one of $\bar{D}^* Σ_c^*$ around 4500 MeV, have large partial decay width into $η_c N$, and thus, can be easily seen in the $η_c N$ invariant mass distributions. By contrast, the states with $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^-$, $P_c(4457)$, the (predicted) narrow $P_c(4380)$ and the bound state of $\bar{D}^* Σ_c^*$ with a mass of about 4520 MeV, do not decay into $η_c N$. Therefore, the $η_c N$ channel should be studied in future to provide further insights into the nature of these states, especially that of the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$.

On D-brane interaction & its related properties

We compute the closed-string cylinder amplitude between one Dp brane and the other Dp$\prime$ brane, placed parallel at a separation, with each carrying a general constant worldvolume flux and with $p - p' = 0, 2, 4, 6$ and $p \le 6$. For the $p = p'$, we show that the main part of the amplitude for $p = p' < 5$ is a special case of that for $p = p' = 5$ or $6$ case. For all other $p - p' = 2, 4, 6$ cases, we show that the amplitude is just a special case of the corresponding one for $p = p'$ case. Combining both, we obtain the general formula for the amplitude, which is valid for each of the cases considered and for arbitrary constant worldvolume fluxes. The corresponding general open string one-loop annulus amplitude is also obtained by a Jacobi transformation of the general cylinder one. We give also the general open string pair production rate. We study the properties of the amplitude such as the nature of the interaction, the open string tachyonic instability, and the possible open string pair production and its potential enhancement. In particular, in the presence of pure magnetic fluxes or magnetic-like fluxes, we find that the nature of interaction is correlated with the existence of potential open string tachyonic instability. When the interaction is attractive, there always exists an open string tachyonic instability when the brane separation reaches the minimum determined by the so-called tachyonic shift. When the interaction is repulsive, there is no such instability for any brane separation. We also find that the enhancement of open string pair production, in the presence of pure electric fluxes, can occur only for the $p - p' = 2$ case.

Phase structures of 4D stringy charged black holes in canonical ensemble

We study the thermodynamics and phase structures of the asymptotically flat dilatonic black holes in 4 dimensions, placed in a cavity {\it a la} York, in string theory for an arbitrary dilaton coupling. We consider these charged black systems in canonical ensemble for which the temperature at the wall of and the charge inside the cavity are fixed. We find that the dilaton coupling plays the key role in the underlying phase structures. The connection of these black holes to higher dimensional brane systems via diagonal (double) and/or direct dimensional reductions indicates that the phase structures of the former may exhaust all possible ones of the latter, which are more difficult to study, under conditions of similar settings. Our study also shows that a diagonal (double) dimensional reduction preserves the underlying phase structure while a direct dimensional reduction has the potential to change it.

Membrane Duality Revisited

Just as string T-duality originates from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the string worldsheet, so it has been suggested that M-theory U-dualities originate from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the membrane worldvolume. However, this encounters a problem unless the target space has dimension $D = p + 1$. We identify the problem to be the nonintegrability of the U-duality transformation assigned to the pull-back map. Just as a double geometry renders manifest the $O(D,D)$ string T-duality, here we show in the case of the M2-brane in $D = 3$ that a generalised geometry renders manifest the $SL(3) \times SL(2)$ U-duality. In the case of M2-brane in $D=4$, with and without extra target space coordinates, we show that only the ${\rm GL}(4,R)\ltimes R^4$ subgroup of the expected $SL(5,R)$ U-duality symmetry is realised.

Tachyon field theory description of (thermo)dynamics in dS space

In this work, we present a few pieces of evidence in support of a possible connection of the gravitational theory in dS space to the worldvolume theory of unstable D-branes. We show that the action describing the geodesic motion of a massive particle (or point-like object) in static dS space turns out to be the same as that of the tachyon field theory for an unstable particle. The motion along the radial direction from the origin, a locally Minkowski spacetime, to the horizon, a locally Rindler space times a sphere, represents just the tachyon condensation process, therefore providing a geometric picture of tachyon condensation. We further study a scalar in global or flat dS and the tachyon fluctuations in a homogeneous tachyon background, representing either the full or half S-brane, on unstable D-branes and find that certain dynamics of the dS universe corresponds to that of the homogeneous full or half S-brane. The thermal temperature of tachyon radiation is found to agree with that felt by any timelike observer in dS space. In string theory context, this temperature is just the Hagedorn one, signaling a phase transition to closed strings. An understanding of this transition in the bulk dS space is also given.

Modification of phase structure of black D6 branes in a canonical ensemble and its origin

It is well known that charged black $Dp$ branes of type II string theory share a universal phase structure of van der Waals$-$Maxwell liquid-gas type except $D5$ and $D6$ branes. Interestingly, the phase structure of $D5$ and $D6$ branes can be changed to the universal form with the inclusion of particular delocalized charged lower-dimensional branes. For $D5$ branes one needs to introduce delocalized $D1$ branes, and for $D6$ branes, one needs to introduce delocalized $D0$ branes to obtain the universal structure. In a previous paper [J. High Energy Phys. {\bf 04} (2013) 100] Lu with Wei study the phase structure of black $D6$ branes with the introduction of delocalized $D0$ branes in a special case when their charges are equal and the dilaton charge vanishes. In this paper, we look at the phase structure of the black $D6/D0$ system with the generic values of the parameters, which makes the analysis more involved but the structure more rich. We also provide reasons why the respective modifications of the phase structures to the universal form for the black $D5$ and $D6$ branes occur when specific delocalized lower-dimensional branes are introduced.

Modulating the phase structure of black D6 branes in canonical ensemble

There exists a dramatic difference in phase structure between charged black Dp-branes with $p < 5$ and charged black D5 or D6 branes. In [1], we found that the phase structure of charged black D5 system can be changed qualitatively to that of charged black Dp with $p < 5$ by adding the delocalized D1 branes but the similar change does not happen for the charged black D6 system through adding the delocalized D2 branes (Note that both D1/D5 and D2/D6 belong to the same type of D(p - 4)/Dp system). Adding the delocalized D4 branes to the black D6 branes doesn't work, either. In this paper, we consider adding the delocalized D0 branes, the only remaining lower dimensional branes, to the black D6 system for this purpose. We find that the delocalized charged black D0-branes alone share the same phase structure as the charged black D6 branes, having no van der Waals-Maxwell liquid-gas type. However, when the two are combined to form D0/D6, the resulting phase diagram finally gets changed dramatically to the wanted one, containing now the above liquid-gas type. This change arises from the interaction between D6 and the delocalized D0.

The phase structure of black D1/D5 (F/NS5) system in canonical ensemble

In this paper, we explore means which can be used to change qualitatively the phase structure of charged black systems. For this, we consider a system of black D1/D5 (or its S-dual F/NS5). We find that the delocalized charged black D-strings (F-strings) alone share the same phase structure as the charged black D5 branes (NS5-branes), having no van der Waals-Maxwell liquid-gas type. However, when the two are combined to form D1/D5 (F/NS5), the resulting phase diagram has been changed dramatically to a richer one, containing now the above liquid-gas type. The effect of adding the charged D-strings (F-strings) on the phase structure can also be effectively described as a slight increase of the transverse dimensions to the original D5 (NS5). This may be viewed as a connection between a brane charge and a fraction of spatial dimension at least in a thermodynamical sense.

Black holes and global structures of spherical spacetimes in Horava-Lifshitz theory

We systematically study black holes in the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory by following the kinematic approach, in which a horizon is defined as the surface at which massless test particles are infinitely redshifted. Because of the nonrelativistic dispersion relations, the speed of light is unlimited, and test particles do not follow geodesics. As a result, there are significant differences in causal structures and black holes between general relativity (GR) and the HL theory. In particular, the horizon radii generically depend on the energies of test particles. Applying them to the spherical static vacuum solutions found recently in the nonrelativistic general covariant theory of gravity, we find that, for test particles with sufficiently high energy, the radius of the horizon can be made as small as desired, although the singularities can be seen in principle only by observers with infinitely high energy. In these studies, we pay particular attention to the global structure of the solutions, and find that, because of the foliation-preserving-diffeomorphism symmetry, ${Diff}(M,{\cal{F}})$, they are quite different from the corresponding ones given in GR, even though the solutions are the same. In particular, the ${Diff}(M,{\cal{F}})$ does not allow Penrose diagrams. Among the vacuum solutions, some give rise to the structure of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, in which two asymptotically flat regions are connected by a throat with a finite non-zero radius. We also study slowly rotating solutions in such a setup, and obtain all the solutions characterized by an arbitrary function $A_{0}(r)$. The case $A_{0} = 0$ reduces to the slowly rotating Kerr solution obtained in GR.

Phase structure of black branes in grand canonical ensemble

This is a companion paper of our previous work [1] where we studied the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat black $p$-branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions $D$ in a canonical ensemble. In this work we study the thermodynamics and phase structure of the same in a grand canonical ensemble. Since the boundary data in two cases are different (for the grand canonical ensemble boundary potential is fixed instead of the charge as in canonical ensemble) the stability analysis and the phase structure in the two cases are quite different. In particular, we find that there exists an analog of one-variable analysis as in canonical ensemble, which gives the same stability condition as the rather complicated known (but generalized from black holes to the present case) two-variable analysis. When certain condition for the fixed potential is satisfied, the phase structure of charged black $p$-branes is in some sense similar to that of the zero charge black $p$-branes in canonical ensemble up to a certain temperature. The new feature in the present case is that above this temperature, unlike the zero-charge case, the stable brane phase no longer exists and `hot flat space' is the stable phase here. In the grand canonical ensemble there is an analog of Hawking-Page transition, even for the charged black $p$-brane, as opposed to the canonical ensemble. Our study applies to non-dilatonic as well as dilatonic black $p$-branes in $D$ space-time dimensions.

Phase transitions and critical behavior of black branes in canonical ensemble

We study the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat non-dilatonic as well as dilatonic black branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions ($D$). We consider the canonical ensemble and so the charge inside the cavity and the temperature at the wall are fixed. We analyze the stability of the black brane equilibrium states and derive the phase structures. For the zero charge case we find an analog of Hawking-Page phase transition for these black branes in arbitrary dimensions. When the charge is non-zero, we find that below a critical value of the charge, the phase diagram has a line of first-order phase transition in a certain range of temperatures which ends up at a second order phase transition point (critical point) as the charge attains the critical value. We calculate the critical exponents at that critical point. Although our discussion is mainly concerned with the non-dilatonic branes, we show how it easily carries over to the dilatonic branes as well.

The enriched phase structure of black branes in canonical ensemble

It is found that a necessary completion of phase structure of D-dimensional charged black p-brane ($p > 0$) in a cavity requires two additional thermodynamical phases, the so-called "bubble of nothing" and/or the extremal brane, in canonical ensemble. This finding resolves the puzzle about the missing phases which are needed for the underlying phase diagram when $\tilde d = D - p - 3 \leq 2$ and gives a new (bubble) phase which can become globally stable when $\tilde d > 2$. An analog of Hawking-Page transition is also found among other new phase transitions, giving a complete phase structure in this setup.

Remarks on the instability of black Dp-branes

We show that for black D$p$-branes having charge $Q$ and Hawking temperature $T$, the product $QT^{7-p}$ is bounded from above for $p\leq 5$ and is unbounded for $p=6$. While the maximum occurs at some finite value of a parameter for $p \leq 4$, it occurs at infinity of the parameter for $p=5$. As a consequence, for fixed charge, there are two black D$p$-branes (for $p\leq 4$) at any given temperature less than its maximum value, and when the temperature is maximum there is one black D$p$-brane. For $p=5$, there is only one black D5-brane at a given temperature less than its maximum value, whereas, for $p=6$, since there is no bound for the temperature, there is always a black D6-brane solution at a given temperature. Of the two black D$p$-branes (for $p\leq 4$), one is large which is shown to be thermodynamically unstable and the other is small which is stable. But for $p=5,6$, the black D$p$-branes are always thermodynamically unstable. The stable, small black D$p$-brane, however, under certain conditions, can become unstable quantum mechanically and decay either to a BPS D$p$-brane or to a Kaluza-Klein "bubble of nothing" through closed string tachyon condensation. The small D5, D6 branes, although classically unstable, have the same fate under similar conditions.

Intersecting non-SUSY branes and closed string tachyon condensation

Following \cite{Bai:2006vv} we here consider the supergravity solutions representing the charged non-supersymmetric $p$-brane (for $1\leq p \leq 6$) intersecting with chargeless non-supersymmetric 1-brane and 0-brane of type II string theories. We show how these solutions nicely interpolate between black $p$-branes and the Kaluza-Klein "bubble of nothing" (BON) by continuously varying some parameters characterizing the solutions from one set of values to another. By performing a time symmetric general bubble initial data analysis, we show that the interpolation implies a possible transition from black $p$-branes to KK BON only for $p\leq 4$, as in these cases there exist locally stable static bubbles under certain conditions. However, for $p>4$, black branes always decay into dynamical bubbles. Contrary to what is known in the literature, we argue that under certain conditions, the mechanism causing this transition to stable static bubbles can be the closed string tachyon condensation for all $p\leq 4$. We also show that the configurations indeed contain (chargeless) F-strings required for the closed string tachyons to appear causing the transitions to occur.

Non-supersymmetric D1/D5, F/NS5 and closed string tachyon condensation

We construct the intersecting non-supersymmetric (non-susy) D1/D5 solution of type IIB string theory. While, as usual, the solution is charged under an electric two-form and an electric six-form gauge field, it also contains a non-susy chargeless (non-BPS) D0-brane. The S-dual of this solution is the non-susy F/NS5 solution. We show how these solutions nicely interpolate between the corresponding black (or non-extremal) solutions and the Kaluza-Klein (KK) "bubble of nothing" (BON) by continuously changing some parameters characterizing the solutions from one set of values to another. We show, by a time symmetric general bubble initial data analysis, that the final bubbles in these cases are static and stable and the interpolations can be physically interpreted as closed string tachyon condensation. As special cases, we recover the transition of two charge black F-string to BON, considered by Horowitz, and also the transition from AdS$_3$ black hole to global AdS$_3$.

Fundamental strings and NS5-branes from unstable D-branes in supergravity

By using the non-supersymmetric $p$-brane solutions delocalized in arbitrary number of transverse directions in type II supergravities, we show how they can be regarded as interpolating solutions between unstable D$p$-branes (a non-BPS D-brane or a pair of coincident D-brane-antiD-brane) and fundamental strings and also between unstable D$p$-branes and NS5-branes. We also show that some of these solutions can be regarded as interpolating solutions between NS5/$\bar{\rm NS}$5 and D$p$-branes (for $p \leq 5$). This gives a closed string description of the tachyon condensation and lends support to the conjecture that the open string theory on unstable D-branes at the tachyonic vacuum has soliton solutions describing not only the lower dimensional BPS D-branes, but also the fundamental strings as well as the NS5-branes.

Intersecting non-SUSY $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane as black $p$-brane

Unlike BPS $p$-brane, non-supersymmetric (non-susy) $p$-brane could be either charged or chargeless. As envisaged in [hep-th/0503007], we construct an intersecting non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless non-susy $q$-brane by taking T-dualities along the delocalized directions of the non-susy $q$-brane solution delocalized in $(p-q)$ transverse directions (where $p\geq q$). In general these solutions are characterized by four independent parameters. We show that when $q=0$ the intersecting charged as well as chargeless non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane can be mapped by a coordinate transformation to black $p$-brane when two of the four parameters characterizing the solution take some special values. For definiteness we restrict our discussion to space-time dimensions $d=10$. We observe that parameters characterizing the black brane and the related dynamics are in general in a different branch of the parameter space from those describing the brane-antibrane annihilation process. We demonstrate this in the two examples, namely, the non-susy D0-brane and the intersecting non-susy D4 and D0-branes, where the solutions with the explicit microscopic descriptions are known.

The membrane at the end of the (de Sitter) universe

The original {\it membrane at the end of the universe} corresponds to a probe $M2$-brane of signature $(2,1)$ occupying the $S^{2} \times S^{1}$ boundary of the $(10,1)$ spacetime $AdS_{4} \times S^{7}$, and is described by an $OSp(4/8)$ SCFT. However, it was subsequently generalized to other worldvolume signatures $(s,t)$ and other spacetime signatures $(S,T)$. An interesting special case is provided by the $(3,0)$ brane at the end of the de Sitter universe $dS_{4}$ which has recently featured in the $dS/CFT$ correspondence. The resulting CFT contains the one recently proposed as the holographic dual of a four-dimensional de Sitter cosmology. Supersymmetry restricts $S,T,s,t$ by requiring that the corresponding bosonic symmetry $O(s+1,t+1) \times O(S-s,T-t)$ be a subgroup of a superconformal group. The case of $dS_{4} \times AdS_{7}$ is `doubly holographic' and may be regarded as the near horizon geometry of $N_{2}$ $M2$-branes or equivalently, under interchange of conformal and R symmetry, of $N_{5}$ $M5$-branes, provided $N_{2}=2N_{5}{}^{2}$. The same correspondence holds in the pp-wave limit of conventional $M$-theory.

Delocalized, non-SUSY $p$-branes, tachyon condensation and tachyon matter

We construct non-supersymmetric $p$-brane solutions of type II supergravities in arbitrary dimensions ($d$) delocalized in one of the spatial transverse directions. By a Wick rotation we convert these solutions into Euclidean $p$-branes delocalized in the transverse time-like direction. The former solutions in $d=10$ nicely interpolate between the $(p+1)$-dimensional non-BPS D-branes and the $p$-dimensional BPS D-branes very similar to the picture of tachyon condensation for the tachyonic kink solution on the non-BPS D-branes. On the other hand the latter solutions interpolate between the $(p+1)$-dimensional non-BPS D-branes and the tachyon matter supergravity configuration very similar to the picture of rolling tachyon on the non-BPS D-branes.

(1 + p)-Dimensional Open D(p - 2) Brane Theories

The dynamics of a Dp brane can be described either by an open string ending on this brane or by an open D(p - 2) brane ending on the same Dp brane. The ends of the open string couple to a Dp brane worldvolume gauge field while the boundary of the open D(p - 2) brane couples to a (p - 2)-form worldvolume potential whose field strength is Poincare dual to that of the gauge field on the Dp-brane worldvolume. With this in mind, we find that the Poincare dual of the fixed rank-2 magnetic field used in defining a (1 + p)-dimensional noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) gives precisely a near-critical electric field for the open D(p - 2) brane. We therefore find (1 + p)-dimensional open D(p - 2) brane theories along the same line as for obtaining noncommutative open string theories (NCOS), OM theory and open Dp brane theories (ODp) from NS5 brane. Similarly, the Poincare dual of the near-critical electric field used in defining a (1 + p)-dimensional NCOS gives a fixed magnetic-like field. This field along with the same bulk field scalings defines a (1 + p)-dimensional noncommutative field theory. In the same spirit, we can have various (1 + 5)-dimensional noncommutative field theories resulting from the existence of ODp if the description of open D(4 - p) brane ending on the NS5 brane is insisted.

4-string Junction and Its Network

We study a BPS configuration in which four strings (of different type) meet at a point in $N = 2, D = 8$ supergravity, i.e., the low energy effective theory of $T^2$-compactified type II string theory. We demonstrate that the charge conservation of the four strings implies the vanishing of the net force (due to the tensions of various strings) at the junction and vice versa, using the tension formula for $SL(3, Z)$ strings obtained recently by the present authors. We then show that a general 4-string junction preserves 1/8 of the spacetime supersymmetries. Using 4-string junctions as building blocks, we construct a string network which also preserves 1/8 of the spacetime supersymmetries.

Remarks on M-theory coupling constants and M-brane tension quantizations

In the absence of a complete M-theory, we gather certain quantum aspects of this theory, namely, M-2 and M-5 brane duality and their tension quantization rule $2κ^2 T_2 T_5 = 2 πn$, the M-2 brane tension quantization $T_2 =\bigg({(2π)^2/2κ^2 m}\bigg)^{1/3}$, supersymmetry, perturbative gauge and gravitational anomaly cancellations, and the half-integral quantization of [$G^W/2π$], and study the consistency among these quantum effects. We find: (1) The complete determination of Hourava-Witten's $η= λ^6 /κ^4$ for M-theory on $R^{10} \times S^1/ Z_2$ requires not only the cancellation of M-theory gauge anomaly but also that of the gravitational anomaly, the quantization of M-2 brane tension, and the recently recognized half-integral quantization of $[G^W / 2 π]$. (2) A well-defined quantum M-theory necessarily requires the presence of both M-2 and M-5 branes and allows only $n = 1$ and $m =1$ for the respectively quantized M-2 and M-5 brane tensions. Implications of the above along with other related issues are discussed.

ADM masses for black strings and p-branes

An ADM mass formula is derived for a wide class of black solutions with certain spherical symmetry. By applying this formula, we calculate the ADM masses for recently discovered black strings and $p$-branes in diverse dimensions. By this, the Bogolmol'nyi equation can be shown to hold explicitly. A useful observation is made for non-extremal black $p$-branes that only for $p = 0$, i.e. for a black hole, can its ADM mass be read directly from the asymptotic behaviour of the metric component $g_{00}$.

Type II p-branes: the brane-scan revisited

We re-examine the classification of supersymmetric extended objects in the light of the recently discovered Type II p-branes, previously thought not to exist for p> 1. We find new points on the brane-scan only in D = 10 and then only for p = 3(Type IIB), p = 4 (Type IIA), p = 5 (Type IIA and IIB) and p = 6 (Type IIA). The case D = 10, p = 2 (Type IIA) also exists but is equivalent to the previously classified D = 11 supermembrane.
