Grassmannian stochastic analysis and the stochastic quantization of Euclidean Fermions

We introduce a stochastic analysis of Grassmann random variables suitable for the stochastic quantization of Euclidean fermionic quantum field theories. Analysis on Grassmann algebras is developed here from the point of view of quantum probability: a Grassmann random variable is an homomorphism of an abstract Grassmann algebra into a quantum probability space, i.e. a $C^{\ast}$-algebra endowed with a suitable state. We define the notion of Gaussian processes, Brownian motion and stochastic (partial) differential equations taking values in Grassmann algebras. We use them to study the long time behavior of finite and infinite dimensional Langevin Grassmann stochastic differential equations driven by Gaussian space-time white noise and to describe their invariant measures. As an application we give a proof of the stochastic quantization and of the removal of the space cut-off for the Euclidean Yukawa model.

Optimal bounds on the speed of subspace evolution

By a quantum speed limit one usually understands an estimate on how fast a quantum system can evolve between two distinguishable states. The most known quantum speed limit is given in the form of the celebrated Mandelstam-Tamm inequality that bounds the speed of the evolution of a state in terms of its energy dispersion. In contrast to the basic Mandelstam-Tamm inequality, we are concerned not with a single state but with a (possibly infinite-dimensional) subspace which is subject to the Schroedinger evolution. By using the concept of maximal angle between subspaces we derive optimal bounds on the speed of such a subspace evolution. These bounds may be viewed as further generalizations of the Mandelstam-Tamm inequality. Our study includes the case of unbounded Hamiltonians.

Quantum speed limits for time evolution of a system subspace

One of the fundamental physical limits on the speed of time evolution of a quantum state is known in the form of the celebrated Mandelstam-Tamm inequality. This inequality gives an answer to the question on how fast an isolated quantum system can evolve from its initial state to an orthogonal one. In its turn, the Fleming bound is an extension of the Mandelstam-Tamm inequality that gives an optimal speed bound for the evolution between non-orthogonal initial and final states. In the present work, we are concerned not with a single state but with a whole (possibly infinite-dimensional) subspace of the system states that are subject to the Schroedinger evolution. By using the concept of maximal angle between subspaces we derive an optimal estimate on the speed of such a subspace evolution that may be viewed as a natural generalization of the Fleming bound.

The invariant measure and the flow associated to the $Φ^4_3$-quantum field model

We give a direct construction of invariant measures and global flows for the stochastic quantization equation to the quantum field theoretical $Φ^4_3$-model on the $3$-dimensional torus. This stochastic equation belongs to a class of singular stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) presently intensively studied, especially after Hairer's groundbreaking work on regularity structures. Our direct construction exhibits invariant measures and flows as limits of the (unique) invariant measures for corresponding finite dimensional approximation equations. Our work is done in the setting of distributional Besov spaces, adapting semigroup techniques for solving nonlinear dissipative parabolic equations on such spaces and using methods that originated from work by Gubinelli et al on paracontrolled distributions for singular SPDEs.

Singular perturbations and asymptotic expansions for SPDEs with an application to term structure models

We study the dependence of mild solutions to linear stochastic evolution equations on Hilbert space driven by Wiener noise, with drift having linear part of the type $A+\varepsilon G$, on the parameter $\varepsilon$. In particular, we study the limit and the asymptotic expansions in powers of $\varepsilon$ of these solutions, as well as of functionals thereof, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, with good control on the remainder. These convergence and series expansion results are then applied to a parabolic perturbation of the Musiela SPDE of mathematical finance modeling the dynamics of forward rates.

Strong uniqueness for Dirichlet operators related to stochastic quantization under exponential/trigonometric interactions on the two-dimensional torus

We consider space-time quantum fields with exponential/trigonometric interactions. In the context of Euclidean quantum field theory, the former and the latter are called the Hoegh-Krohn model and the Sine-Gordon model, respectively. The main objective of the present paper is to construct infinite dimensional diffusion processes which solve modified stochastic quantization equations for these quantum fields on the two-dimensional torus by the Dirichlet form approach and to prove strong uniqueness of the corresponding Dirichlet operators.

The Birman-Schwinger Operator for a Parabolic Quantum Well in a Zero-Thickness Layer in the Presence of a Two-Dimensional Attractive Gaussian Impurity

In this note we consider a quantum mechanical particle moving inside an infinitesimally thin layer constrained by a parabolic well in the $x$-direction and, moreover, in the presence of an impurity modelled by an attractive Gaussian potential. We investigate the Birman-Schwinger operator associated to a model assuming the presence of a Gaussian impurity inside the layer and prove that such an integral operator is Hilbert-Schmidt, which allows the use of the modified Fredholm determinant in order to compute the bound states created by the impurity. Furthermore, we consider the case where the Gaussian potential degenerates to a $δ$-potential in the $x$-direction and a Gaussian potential in the $y$-direction. We construct the corresponding self-adjoint Hamiltonian and prove that it is the limit in the norm resolvent sense of a sequence of corresponding Hamiltonians with suitably scaled Gaussian potentials. Satisfactory bounds on the ground state energies of all Hamiltonians involved are exhibited.

The elliptic stochastic quantization of some two dimensional Euclidean QFTs

We study a class of elliptic SPDEs with additive Gaussian noise on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times M$, with $M$ a $d$-dimensional manifold equipped with a positive Radon measure, and a real-valued non linearity given by the derivative of a smooth potential $V$, convex at infinity and growing at most exponentially. For quite general coefficients and a suitable regularity of the noise we obtain, via the dimensional reduction principle discussed in our previous paper on the topic, the identity between the law of the solution to the SPDE evaluated at the origin with a Gibbs type measure on the abstract Wiener space $L^2 (M)$. The results are then applied to the elliptic stochastic quantization equation for the scalar field with polynomial interaction over $\mathbb{T}^2$, and with exponential interaction over $\mathbb{R}^2$ (known also as Høeg-Krohn or Liouville model in the literature). In particular for the exponential interaction case, the existence and uniqueness properties of solutions to the elliptic equation over $\mathbb{R}^{2 + 2}$ is derived as well as the dimensional reduction for the values of the ``charge parameter'' $σ= \fracα{2\sqrtπ} < \sqrt{4 \left( 8 - 4 \sqrt{3} \right) π} \simeq \sqrt{4.23π}$, for which the model has an Euclidean invariant probability measure (hence also permitting to get the corresponding relativistic invariant model on the two dimensional Minkowski space).

Elliptic stochastic quantization

We prove an explicit formula for the law in zero of the solution of a class of elliptic SPDE in $\mathbb{R}^2$. This formula is the simplest instance of dimensional reduction, discovered in the physics literature by Parisi and Sourlas (1979), which links the law of an elliptic SPDE in $d + 2$ dimension with a Gibbs measure in $d$ dimensions. This phenomenon is similar to the relation between an $\mathbb{R}^{d + 1}$ dimensional parabolic SPDE and its $\mathbb{R}^d$ dimensional invariant measure. As such, dimensional reduction of elliptic SPDEs can be considered a sort of elliptic stochastic quantisation procedure in the sense of Nelson (1966) and Parisi and Wu (1981). Our proof uses in a fundamental way the representation of the law of the SPDE as a supersymmetric quantum field theory. Dimensional reduction for the supersymmetric theory was already established by Klein et al. (1984). We fix a subtle gap in their proof and also complete the dimensional reduction picture by providing the link between the elliptic SPDE and the supersymmetric model. Even in our $d = 0$ context the arguments are non-trivial and a non-supersymmetric, elementary proof seems only to be available in the Gaussian case.

Strong Kac's chaos in the mean-field Bose-Einstein Condensation

A stochastic approach to the (generic) mean-field limit in Bose-Einstein Condensation is described and the convergence of the ground state energy as well as of its components are established. For the one-particle process on the path space a total variation convergence result is proved. A strong form of Kac's chaos on path-space for the $k$-particles probability measures are derived from the previous energy convergence by purely probabilistic techniques notably using a simple chain-rule of the relative entropy. The Fisher's information chaos of the fixed-time marginal probability density under the generic mean-field scaling limit and the related entropy chaos result are also deduced.

Weak symmetries of stochastic differential equations driven by semimartingales with jumps

Stochastic symmetries and related invariance properties of finite dimensional SDEs driven by general cadlag semimartingales taking values in Lie groups are defined and investigated. The considered set of SDEs, first introduced by S. Cohen, includes affine and Marcus type SDEs as well as smooth SDEs driven by Levy processes and iterated random maps. A natural extension to this general setting of reduction and reconstruction theory for symmetric SDEs is provided. Our theorems imply as special cases non trivial invariance results concerning a class of affine iterated random maps as well as symmetries for numerical schemes (of Euler and Milstein type) for Brownian motion driven SDEs.

Solvability of the operator Riccati equation in the Feshbach case

We consider a bounded block operator matrix of the form $$ L=\left(\begin{array}{cc} A & B \\ C & D \end{array} \right), $$ where the main-diagonal entries $A$ and $D$ are self-adjoint operators on Hilbert spaces $H_{_A}$ and $H_{_D}$, respectively; the coupling $B$ maps $H_{_D}$ to $H_{_A}$ and $C$ is an operator from $H_{_A}$ to $H_{_D}$. It is assumed that the spectrum $σ_{_D}$ of $D$ is absolutely continuous and uniform, being presented by a single band $[α,β]\subset\mathbb{R}$, $α<β$, and the spectrum $σ_{_A}$ of $A$ is embedded into $σ_{_D}$, that is, $σ_{_A}\subset(α,β)$. We formulate conditions under which there are bounded solutions to the operator Riccati equations associated with the complexly deformed block operator matrix $L$; in such a case the deformed operator matrix $L$ admits a block diagonalization. The same conditions also ensure the Markus-Matsaev-type factorization of the Schur complement $M_{_A}(z)=A-z-B(D-z)^{-1}C$ analytically continued onto the unphysical sheet(s) of the complex $z$ plane adjacent to the band $[α,β]$. We prove that the operator roots of the continued Schur complement $M_{_A}$ are explicitly expressed through the respective solutions to the deformed Riccati equations.

Quantum fields obtained from convoluted generalized white noise never have positive metric

It is proven that the relativistic quantum fields obtained from analytic continuation of convoluted generalized (Lévy type) noise fields have positive metric, if and only if the noise is Gaussian. This follows as an easy observation from a criterion by K. Baumann, based on the Dell'Antonio-Robinson-Greenberg theorem, for a relativistic quantum field in positive metric to be a free field.

Entropy Chaos and Bose-Einstein Condensation

We prove the entropy-chaos property for the system of N undistinguishable interacting diffusions rigorously associated with the ground state of N trapped Bose particles in the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling limit of infinite particles. On the path-space we show that the sequence of probability measures of the one-particle interacting diffusion weakly converges to a limit probability measure, uniquely associated with the minimizer of the Gross-Pitaevskii functional.

Equivalence of the Brownian and energy representations

We consider two unitary representations of the infinite-dimensional groups of smooth paths with values in a compact Lie group. The first representation is induced by quasi-invariance of the Wiener measure, and the second representation is the energy representation. We define these representations and their basic properties, and then we prove that these representations are unitarily equivalent.

On Bernoulli convolutions generated by second Ostrogradsky series and their fine fractal properties

We study properties of Bernoulli convolutions generated by the second Ostrogradsky series, i.e., probability distributions of random variables \begin{equation} ξ= \sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac{(-1)^{k+1}ξ_k}{q_k}, \end{equation} where $q_k$ is a sequence of positive integers with $q_{k+1}\geq q_k(q_k+1)$, and $\{ξ_k\}$ are independent random variables taking the values $0$ and $1$ with probabilities $p_{0k}$ and $p_{1k}$ respectively. We prove that $ξ$ has an anomalously fractal Cantor type singular distribution ($\dim_H (S_ξ)=0$) whose Fourier-Stieltjes transform does not tend to zero at infinity. We also develop different approaches how to estimate a level of "irregularity" of probability distributions whose spectra are of zero Hausdorff dimension. Using generalizations of the Hausdorff measures and dimensions, fine fractal properties of the probability measure $μ_ξ$ are studied in details. Conditions for the Hausdorff--Billingsley dimension preservation on the spectrum by its probability distribution function are also obtained.

On metric, dynamical, probabilistic and fractal phenomena connected with the second Ostrogradsky expansion

We consider the second Ostrogradsky expansion from the number theory, probability theory, dynamical systems and fractal geometry points of view, and establish several new phenomena connected with this expansion. First of all we prove the singularity of the random second Ostrogradsky expansion. Secondly we study properties of the symbolic dynamical system generated by the natural one-sided shift-transformation $T$ on the second Ostrogradsky expansion. It is shown, in particular, that there are no probability measures which are simultaneously invariant and ergodic (w.r.t. $T$) and absolutely continuous (w.r.t. Lebesgue measure). So, the classical ergodic approach to the development of the metric theory is not applicable for the second Ostrogradsky expansion. We develop instead the metric and dimensional theories for this expansion using probabilistic methods. We show, in particular, that for Lebesgue almost all real numbers any digit $i$ from the alphabet $A= \mathbb{N} $ appears only finitely many times in the difference-version of the second Ostrogradsky expansion, and the set of all reals with bounded digits of this expansion is of zero Hausdorff dimension. Finally, we compare metric, probabilistic and dimensional theories for the second Ostrogradsky expansions with the corresponding theories for the Ostrogradsky-Pierce expansion and for the continued fractions expansion.

On new fractal phenomena connected with infinite linear IFS

We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $Φ$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $Φ(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Ostrogradsky-Sierpiński-Pierce expansion: dynamical systems, probability theory and fractal geometry points of view

We establish several new probabilistic, dynamical, dimensional and number theoretical phenomena connected with Ostrogradsky-Sierpiński-Pierce expansion. First of all, we develop metric, ergodic and dimensional theories of the Ostrogradsky-Sierpiński-Pierce expansion. In particular, it is proven that for Lebesgue almost all real numbers any digit $i$ from the alphabet $A= \mathbb{N} $ appears only finitely many times in the difference-version of the Ostrogradsky-Sierpiński-Pierce expansion. Properties of the symbolic dynamical system generated by a shift-transformation $T$ on the difference-version of the Ostrogradsky-Sierpiński-Pierce expansion are also studied in details. It is shown that there are no probability measures which are invariant and ergodic (w.r.t. $T$) and absolutely continuous (w.r.t. Lebesgue measure). Thirdly, we study properties of random variables $η$ with independent identically distributed differences of the Ostrogradsky-Sierpiński-Pierce expansion. Necessary and sufficient conditions for $η$ to be discrete resp. singularly continuous are found. We prove that $η$ can not be absolutely continuously distributed.

A class of Lévy driven SDEs and their explicit invariant measures

We describe a class of explicit invariant measures for both finite and infinite dimensional Stochastic Differential Equations (SDE) driven by Lévy noise. We first discuss in details the finite dimensional case with a linear, resp. non linear, drift. In particular, we exhibit a class of such SDEs for which the invariant measures are given in explicit form, coherently in all dimensions. We then indicate how to relate them to invariant measures for SDEs on separable Hilbert spaces.

A unified approach to infinite dimensional integration

An approach to infinite dimensional integration which unifies the case of oscillatory integrals and the case of probabilistic type integrals is presented. It provides a truly infinite dimensional construction of integrals as linear functionals, as much as possible independent of the underlying topological and measure theoretical structure. Various applications are given, including, next to Schrödinger and diffusion equations, also higher order hyperbolic and parabolic equations.

Klein-Dirac Quadric and Multidimensional Toda Lattice via Pseudo-positive Moment Problem

In 1974 Jürgen Moser has shown that the classical Moment Problem plays a fundamental role for the theory of completely integrable systems, by proving that the simplest case of the finite Toda lattice is described exhaustively in its terms. In particular, the Jacobi matrix defined by the Flaschka variables corresponds to the Schrödinger operator related to the Korteweg-de Vries operator. In the present paper we use a recent breakthrough in the area of the multidimensional Moment Problem in order to develop a multidimensional generalization of the finite Toda lattice. Our construction is based on the notion of pseudo-positive measure and the notion of multidimensional Markov-Stieltjes transform naturally defined on the Klein-Dirac quadric. An important consequence of the properties of the Markov-Stieltjes transform is a new method for summation of multidimensional divergent series on the Klein-Dirac quadric.

On the Hausdorff dimension faithfulness and the Cantor series expansion

We study families $Φ$ of coverings which are faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation on a given set $E$ (i. e., special relatively narrow families of coverings leading to the classical Hausdorff dimension of an arbitrary subset of $E$) and which are natural generalizations of comparable net-coverings. They are shown to be very useful for the determination or estimation of the Hausdorff dimension of sets and probability measures. We give general necessary and sufficient conditions for a covering family to be faithful and new techniques for proving faithfulness/non-faithfulness for the family of cylinders generated by expansions of real numbers. Motivated by applications in the multifractal analysis of infinite Bernoulli convolutions, we study in details the Cantor series expansion and prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the corresponding net-coverings to be faithful. To the best of our knowledge this is the first known sharp condition of the faithfulness for a class of covering families containing both faithful and non-faithful ones. Applying our results, we characterize fine fractal properties of probability measures with independent digits of the Cantor series expansion and show that a class of faithful net-coverings essentially wider that the class of comparable ones. We construct, in particular, rather simple examples of faithful families $\mathcal{A}$ of net-coverings which are "extremely non-comparable" to the Hausdorff measure.

On Titchmarsh-Weyl functions and eigenfunction expansions of first-order symmetric systems

We study general (not necessarily Hamiltonian) first-order symmetric systems $J y'(t)-B(t)y(t)=\D(t) f(t)$ on an interval $\cI=[a,b> $ with the regular endpoint $a$. It is assumed that the deficiency indices $n_\pm(\Tmi)$ of the minimal relation $\Tmi$ in $\LI$ satisfy $n_-(\Tmi)\leq n_+(\Tmi)$. By using a Nevanlinna boundary parameter $τ=τ(ł)$ at the singular endpoint $b$ we define self-adjoint and $ł$-depending Nevanlinna boundary conditions which are analogs of separated self-adjoint boundary conditions for Hamiltonian systems. With a boundary value problem involving such conditions we associate the $m$-function $m(\cd)$, which is an analog of the Titchmarsh-Weyl coefficient for the Hamiltonian system. By using $m$-function we obtain the Fourier transform $V:\LI\to L^2(\Si)$ with the spectral function $\Si(\cd)$ of the minimally possible dimension. If $V$ is an isometry, then the (exit space) self-adjoint extension $\wt T$ of $\Tmi$ induced by the boundary problem is unitarily equivalent to the multiplication operator in $L^2(\Si)$; hence the spectrum of $\wt T$ is defined by the spectral function $\Si(\cd)$. We show that all the objects of the boundary problem are determined by the parameter $τ$, which enables us to parametrize all spectral function $\Si(\cd) $ immediately in terms of $τ$. Similar results for various classes of boundary problems were obtained by Kac and Krein, Fulton, Hinton and Shaw and other authors.

Diffusion processes in thin tubes and their limits on graphs

The present paper is concerned with diffusion processes running on tubular domains with conditions on nonreaching the boundary, respectively, reflecting at the boundary, and corresponding processes in the limit where the thin tubular domains are shrinking to graphs. The methods we use are probabilistic ones. For shrinking, we use big potentials, respectively, reflection on the boundary of tubes. We show that there exists a unique limit process, and we characterize the limit process by a second-order differential generator acting on functions defined on the limit graph, with Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the vertices.

On elements of the Lax-Phillips scattering scheme for PT-symmetric operators

Generalized PT-symmetric operators acting an a Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}$ are defined and investigated. The case of PT-symmetric extensions of a symmetric operator $S$ is investigated in detail. The possible application of the Lax-Phillips scattering methods to the investigation of PT-symmetric operators is illustrated by considering the case of 0-perturbed operators.

On Titchmarsh-Weyl functions of first-order symmetric systems with arbitrary deficiency indices

We study general (not necessarily Hamiltonian) first-order symmetric systems $J y'(t)-B(t)y(t)=\D(t) f(t)$ on an interval $[a,b> $ with the regular endpoint $a$. The deficiency indices $n_\pm$ of the corresponding minimal relation $\Tmi$ may be arbitrary (possibly unequal). Our approach is based on the concept of a decomposing boundary triplet, which enables one to parametrize various classes of extensions of $\Tmi$ (self-adjoint, $m$-dissipative, etc.) in terms of boundary conditions imposed on regular and singular values of a function $y\in \dom \tma$ at the endpoints $a$ and $b$ respectively. In particular, we describe self-adjoint and $ł$-depending Nevanlinna boundary conditions which are analogs of separated ones for Hamiltonian systems. With a boundary value problem involving such conditions we associate the $m$-function $m(\cd)$, which is an analog of the Titchmarsh-Weyl coefficient for the Hamiltonian system. In the simplest case of minimal (unequal) deficiency indices $n_\pm$ the $m$-function $m(\cd)$ coincides with the rectangular Titchmarsh-Weyl coefficient introduced by Hinton and Schneider. We parametrize all $m$-functions in terms of the Nevanlinna boundary parameter at the endpoint $b$ by means of the formula similar to the known Krein formula for resolvents. Application of these results to differential operators of an odd order enables us to complete the results by Everitt and Krishna Kumar on the Titchmarsh-Weyl theory of such operators.

Sharpening the norm bound in the subspace perturbation theory

Let A be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space H. Assume that σ is an isolated component of the spectrum of A, i.e. dist(σ,Σ)=d>0 where Σ=spec(A)\σ. Suppose that V is a bounded self-adjoint operator on H such that ||V||<d/2 and let L=A+V. Denote by P the spectral projection of A associated with the spectral set σ and let Q be the spectral projection of L corresponding to the closed ||V||-neighborhood of σ. We prove a bound of the form arcsin(||P-Q||)\leq M(||V||/d), M: [0,1/2)-->R^+, that is essentially stronger than the previously known estimates for ||P-Q||. In particular, the bound obtained ensures that ||P-Q||<1 and, thus, that the spectral subspaces Ran(P) and Ran(Q) are in the acute-angle case whenever ||V||<cd with c=0.454169... (the precise expression for c is also given). Our proof of the above results is based on using the triangle inequality for the maximal angle between subspaces and on employing the a priori generic \sin2θestimate for the variation of a spectral subspace. As an example, the boundedly perturbed quantum harmonic oscillator is discussed.

Small noise asymptotic expansions for stochastic PDE's driven by dissipative nonlinearity and Lévy noise

We study a reaction-diffusion evolution equation perturbed by a space-time Lévy noise. The associated Kolmogorov operator is the sum of the infinitesimal generator of a $C_0$-semigroup of strictly negative type acting in a Hilbert space and a nonlinear term which has at most polynomial growth, is non necessarily Lipschitz and is such that the whole system is dissipative. The corresponding Itô stochastic equation describes a process on a Hilbert space with dissi- pative nonlinear, non globally Lipschitz drift and a Lévy noise. Under smoothness assumptions on the non-linearity, asymptotics to all orders in a small parameter in front of the noise are given, with detailed estimates on the remainders. Applications to nonlinear SPDEs with a linear term in the drift given by a Laplacian in a bounded domain are included. As a particular case we provide the small noise asymptotic expansions for the SPDE equations of FitzHugh Nagumo type in neurobiology with external impulsive noise.

The a priori Tan Theta Theorem for spectral subspaces

Let A be a self-adjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space H. Assume that the spectrum of A consists of two disjoint components s_0 and s_1 such that the set s_0 lies in a finite gap of the set s_1. Let V be a bounded self-adjoint operator on H off-diagonal with respect to the partition spec(A)=s_0 \cup s_1. It is known that if ||V||<\sqrt{2}d, where d=\dist(s_0,s_1), then the perturbation V does not close the gaps between s_0 and s_1 and the spectrum of the perturbed operator L=A+V consists of two isolated components s'_0 and s'_1 grown from s_0 and s_1, respectively. Furthermore, it is known that if V satisfies the stronger bound ||V||< d then the following sharp norm estimate holds: ||E_L(s'_0)-E_A(s_0)|| \leq sin(arctan(||V||/d)), where E_A(s_0) and E_L(s'_0) are the spectral projections of A and L associated with the spectral sets s_0 and s'_0, respectively. In the present work we prove that this estimate remains valid and sharp also for d \leq ||V||< \sqrt{2}d, which completely settles the issue.

The Riemann zeta in terms of the dilogarithm

We give a representation of the classical Riemann $ζ$-function in the half plane $\Re s>0$ in terms of a Mellin transform involving the real part of the dilogarithm function with an argument on the unit circle (associated Clausen $Gl_2$-function). We also derive corresponding representations involving the derivatives of the $Gl_2$-function. A generalized symmetrized Müntz-type formula is also derived. For a special choice of test functions it connects to our integral representation of the $ζ$-function, providing also a computation of a concrete Mellin transform. Certain formulae involving series of zeta functions and gamma functions are also derived.

Phase transitions and quantum effects in anharmonic crystals

The most important recent results in the theory of phase transitions and quantum effects in quantum anharmonic crystals are presented and discussed. In particular, necessary and sufficient conditions for a phase transition to occur at some temperature are given in the form of simple inequalities involving the interaction strength and the parameters describing a single oscillator. The main characteristic feature of the theory is that both mentioned phenomena are described in one and the same setting, in which thermodynamic phases of the model appear as probability measures on path spaces. Then the possibility of a phase transition to occur is related to the existence of multiple phases at the same values of the relevant parameters. Other definitions of phase transitions, based on the non-differentiability of the free energy density and on the appearance of ordering, are also discussed.

Bounds on the spectrum and reducing subspaces of a J-self-adjoint operator

Given a self-adjoint involution J on a Hilbert space H, we consider a J-self-adjoint operator L=A+V on H where A is a possibly unbounded self-adjoint operator commuting with J and V a bounded J-self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with J. We establish optimal estimates on the position of the spectrum of L with respect to the spectrum of A and we obtain norm bounds on the operator angles between maximal uniformly definite reducing subspaces of the unperturbed operator A and the perturbed operator L. All the bounds are given in terms of the norm of V and the distances between pairs of disjoint spectral sets associated with the operator L and/or the operator A. As an example, the quantum harmonic oscillator under a PT-symmetric perturbation is discussed. The sharp norm bounds obtained for the operator angles generalize the celebrated Davis-Kahan trigonometric theorems to the case of J-self-adjoint perturbations.

Operator integrals with respect to a spectral measure and solutions to some operator equations

We introduce the concept of Stieltjes integral of an operator-valued function with respect to the spectral measure associated with a normal operator. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of this integral and find bounds on its norm. The results obtained are applied to the Sylvester and Riccati operator equations. Assuming that the entry C is a normal operator, the spectrum of the entry A is separated from the spectrum of C, and D is a bounded operator, we obtain a representation for the strong solution X to the Sylvester equation XA-CX=D in the form of an operator Stieltjes integral with respect to the spectral measure of C. By using this result we then establish sufficient conditions for the existence of a strong solution to the operator Riccati equation YA-CY+YBY=D where B is another bounded operator.

The a priori tanθtheorem for eigenvectors

Let $A$ be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\fH$. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint components $σ_0$ and $σ_1$ such that the convex hull of the set $σ_0$ does not intersect the set $σ_1$. Let $V$ be a bounded self-adjoint operator on $\fH$ off-diagonal with respect to the orthogonal decomposition $\fH=\fH_0\oplus\fH_1$ where $\fH_0$ and $\fH_1$ are the spectral subspaces of $A$ associated with the spectral sets $σ_0$ and $σ_1$, respectively. It is known that if $\|V\|<\sqrt{2}d$ where $d=\dist(σ_0,σ_1)>0$ then the perturbation $V$ does not close the gaps between $σ_0$ and $σ_1$. Assuming that $f$ is an eigenvector of the perturbed operator $A+V$ associated with its eigenvalue in the interval $(\min(σ_0)-d,\max(σ_0)+d)$ we prove that under the condition $\|V\|<\sqrt{2}d$ the (acute) angle $θ$ between $f$ and the orthogonal projection of $f$ onto $\fH_0$ satisfies the bound $\tanθ\leq\frac{\|V\|}{d}$ and this bound is sharp.

The Threshold effects for the two-particle Hamiltonians on lattices

For a wide class of two-body energy operators $h(k)$ on the three-dimensional lattice $\bbZ^3$, $k$ being the two-particle quasi-momentum, we prove that if the following two assumptions (i) and (ii) are satisfied, then for all nontrivial values $k$, $k\ne 0$, the discrete spectrum of $h(k)$ below its threshold is non-empty. The assumptions are: (i) the two-particle Hamiltonian $h(0)$ corresponding to the zero value of the quasi-momentum has either an eigenvalue or a virtual level at the bottom of its essential spectrum and (ii) the one-particle free Hamiltonians in the coordinate representation generate positivity preserving semi-groups.

On Markovian behaviour of $p$-adic random dynamical systems

We study Markovian and non-Markovian behaviour of stochastic processes generated by $p$-adic random dynamical systems. Given a family of $p$-adic monomial random mappings generating a random dynamical system. Under which conditions do the orbits under such a random dynamical system form Markov chains? It is necessary that the mappings are Markov dependent. We show, however, that this is in general not sufficient. In fact, in many cases we have to require that the mappings are independent. Moreover we investigate some geometric and algebraic properties for $p-$adic monomial mappings as well as for the $p-$adic power function which are essential to the formation of attractors. $p$-adic random dynamical systems can be useful in so called $p$-adic quantum phytsics as well as in some cognitive models.

Schrödinger operators on lattices. The Efimov effect and discrete spectrum asymptotics

The Hamiltonian of a system of three quantum mechanical particles moving on the three-dimensional lattice $\Z^3$ and interacting via zero-range attractive potentials is considered. For the two-particle energy operator $h(k),$ with $k\in \T^3=(-π,π]^3$ the two-particle quasi-momentum, the existence of a unique positive eigenvalue below the bottom of the continuous spectrum of $h(k)$ for $k\neq0$ is proven, provided that $h(0)$ has a zero energy resonance. The location of the essential and discrete spectra of the three-particle discrete Schrödinger operator $H(K), K\in \T^3$ being the three-particle quasi-momentum, is studied. The existence of infinitely many eigenvalues of H(0) is proven. It is found that for the number $N(0,z)$ of eigenvalues of H(0) lying below $z<0$ the following limit exists $$ \lim_{z\to 0-} \frac {N(0,z)}{\mid \log\mid z\mid\mid}=\cU_0 $$ with $\cU_0>0$. Moreover, for all sufficiently small nonzero values of the three-particle quasi-momentum $K$ the finiteness of the number $ N(K,τ_{ess}(K))$ of eigenvalues of $H(K)$ below the essential spectrum is established and the asymptotics for the number $N(K,0)$ of eigenvalues lying below zero is given.

Integrable Stochastic Ladder Models

A general way to construct ladder models with certain Lie algebraic or quantum Lie algebraic symmetries is presented. These symmetric models give rise to series of integrable systems. It is shown that corresponding to these SU(2) symmetric integrable ladder models there are exactly solvable stationary discrete-time (resp. continuous-time) Markov processes with transition matrices (resp. intensity matrices) having spectra which coincide with the ones of the corresponding integrable models.

A general correspondence between Dirichlet forms and right processes

The theory of Dirichlet forms as originated by Beurling-Deny and developed particularly by Fukushima and Silverstein, is a natural functional analytic extension of classical (and axiomatic) potential theory. Although some parts of it have abstract measure theoretic versions, the basic general construction of a Hunt process properly associated with the form, obtained by Fukushima and Silverstein, requires the form to be defined on a locally compact separable space with a Radon measure $m$ and the form to be regular (in the sense of the continuous functions of compact support being dense in the domain of the form, both in the supremum norm and in the natural norm given by the form and the $L^2(m)$-space). This setting excludes infinite dimensional situations. In this letter we announce that there exists an extension of Fukushima-Silverstein's construction of the associated process to the case where the space is only supposed to be metrizable and the form is not required to be regular.
