C*-algebras of a Cantor system with finitely many minimal subsets: structures, K-theories, and the index map

We study homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with $k$ ($k < +\infty$) minimal invariant closed (but not open) subsets; we also study crossed product C*-algebras associated to these Cantor systems and their certain orbit-cut sub-C*-algebras. In the case that $k\geq 2$, the crossed product C*-algebra is stably finite, has stable rank 2, and has real rank zero if in addition $(X, σ)$ is aperiodic. The image of the index map is connected to certain directed graphs arising from the Bratteli-Vershik-Kakutani model of the Cantor system. Using this, it is shown that the ideal of the Bratteli diagram (of the Bratteli-Vershik-Kakutani model) must have at least $k$ vertices at each level, and the image of the index map must consist infinitesimals.

Harmonic analysis on graphs via Bratteli diagrams and path-space measures

The past decade has seen a flourishing of advances in harmonic analysis of graphs. They lie at the crossroads of graph theory and such analytical tools as graph Laplacians, Markov processes and associated boundaries, analysis of path-space, harmonic analysis, dynamics, and tail-invariant measures. Motivated by recent advances for the special case of Bratteli diagrams, our present focus will be on those graph systems $G$ with the property that the sets of vertices $V$ and edges $E$ admit discrete level structures. A choice of discrete levels in turn leads to new and intriguing discrete-time random-walk models. Our main extension (which greatly expands the earlier analysis of Bratteli diagrams) is the case when the levels in the graph system $G$ under consideration are now allowed to be standard measure spaces. Hence, in the measure framework, we must deal with systems of transition probabilities, as opposed to incidence matrices (for the traditional Bratteli diagrams). The paper is divided into two parts, (i) the special case when the levels are countable discrete systems, and (ii) the (non-atomic) measurable category, i.e., when each level is a prescribed measure space with standard Borel structure. The study of the two cases together is motivated in part by recent new results on graph-limits. Our results depend on a new analysis of certain duality systems for operators in Hilbert space; specifically, one dual system of operator for each level. We prove new results in both cases, (i) and (ii); and we further stress both similarities, and differences, between results and techniques involved in the two cases.

Monopoles, dipoles, and harmonic functions on Bratteli diagrams

In our study of electrical networks we develop two themes: finding explicit formulas for special classes of functions defined on the vertices of a transient network, namely monopoles, dipoles, and harmonic functions. Secondly, our interest is focused on the properties of electrical networks supported on Bratteli diagrams. We show that the structure of Bratteli diagrams allows one to describe algorithmically harmonic functions as well as monopoles and dipoles. We also discuss some special classes of Bratteli diagrams (stationary, Pascal, trees), and we give conditions under which the harmonic functions defined on these diagrams have finite energy.

Representations of Cuntz-Krieger relations, dynamics on Bratteli diagrams, and path-space measures

We study a new class of representations of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras $\mathcal O_A$ constructed by semibranching function systems, naturally related to stationary Bratteli diagrams. The notion of isomorphic semibranching function systems is defined and studied. We show that any isomorphism of such systems implies the equivalence of the corresponding representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal O_A$. In particular, we show that equivalent measures generate equivalent representations of $\mathcal O_A$. We use Markov measures which are defined on the path space of stationary Bratteli diagrams to construct isomorphic representations of $\mathcal O_A$. To do this, we associate a (strongly) directed graph to a stationary (simple) Bratteli diagram, and show that isomorphic graphs generate isomorphic semibranching function systems. We also consider a class of monic representations of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras, and we classify them up to unitary equivalence. Several examples that illustrate the results are included in the paper.

Perfect orderings on Bratteli diagrams

Given a Bratteli diagram B, we study the set O(B) of all possible orderings w on a Bratteli diagram B and its subset P(B) consisting of `perfect' orderings that produce Bratteli-Vershik dynamical systems (Vershik maps). We give necessary and sufficient conditions for w to be perfect. On the other hand, a wide class of non-simple Bratteli diagrams that do not admit Vershik maps is explicitly described. In the case of finite rank Bratteli diagrams, we show that the existence of perfect orderings with a prescribed number of extreme paths affects significantly the values of the entries of the incidence matrices and the structure of the diagram B. Endowing the set O(B) with product measure, we prove that there is some j such that almost all orderings on B have j maximal and minimal paths, and that if j is strictly greater than the number of minimal components that B has, then almost all orderings are imperfect.

Measures on Cantor sets: the good, the ugly, the bad

We translate Akin's notion of {\it good} (and related concepts) from measures on Cantor sets to traces on dimension groups, and particularly for invariant measures of minimal homeomorphisms (and their corresponding simple dimension groups), this yields characterizations and examples, which translate back to the original context. Good traces on a simple dimension group are characterized by their kernel having dense image in their annihilating set of affine functions on the trace space; this makes it possible to construct many examples with seemingly paradoxical properties. In order to study the related property of {\it refinability,} we consider goodness for sets of measures (traces on dimension groups), and obtain partial characterizations in terms of (special) convex subsets of Choquet simplices. These notions also very closely related to unperforation of quotients of dimension groups by convex subgroups (that are not order ideals), and we give partial characterizations. Numerous examples illustrate the results.

Finite Rank Bratteli Diagrams: Structure of Invariant Measures

We consider Bratteli diagrams of finite rank (not necessarily simple) and ergodic invariant measures with respect to the cofinal equivalence relation on their path spaces. It is shown that every ergodic invariant measure (finite or "regular" infinite) is obtained by an extension from a simple subdiagram. We further investigate quantitative properties of these measures, which are mainly determined by the asymptotic behavior of products of incidence matrices. A number of sufficient conditions for unique ergodicity are obtained. One of these is a condition of exact finite rank, which parallels a similar notion in measurable dynamics. Several examples illustrate the broad range of possible behavior of finite type diagrams and invariant measures on them. We then prove that the Vershik map on the path space of an exact finite rank diagram cannot be strongly mixing, independent of the ordering. On the other hand, for the so-called "consecutive" ordering, the Vershik map is not strongly mixing on all finite rank diagrams.

Smooth automorphisms and path-connectedness in Borel dynamics

Let $Aut(X,\mathcal{B})$ be the group of all Borel automorphisms of a standard Borel space $(X,\mathcal{B})$. We study topological properties of $Aut(X,\mathcal{B})$ with respect to the uniform and weak topologies, $τ$ and $p$, defined in [Bezuglyi S., Dooley A.H., Kwiatkowski J., Topologies on the group of Borel automorphisms of a standard Borel space, Preprint, 2003]. It is proved that the class of smooth automorphisms is dense in $(Aut(X,\mathcal B),p)$. Let $Ctbl(X)$ denote the group of Borel automorphisms with countable support. It is shown that the topological group $Aut_0(X,\mathcal B)=Aut(X,\mathcal{B})/Ctbl(X)$ is path-connected with respect to the quotient topology $τ_0$. It is also proved that $Aut_0(X,\mathcal B)$ has the Rokhlin property in the quotient topology $p_0$, i.e., the action of $Aut_0(X,\mathcal B)$ on itself by conjugation is topologically transitive.

The Rokhlin lemma for homeomorphisms of a Cantor set

For a Cantor set $X$, let $Homeo(X)$ denote the group of all homeomorphisms of $X$. The main result of this note is the following theorem. Let $T\in Homeo(X)$ be an aperiodic homeomorphism, let $μ_1,μ_2,...,μ_k$ be Borel probability measures on $X$, $\e> 0$, and $n \ge 2$. Then there exists a clopen set $E\subset X$ such that the sets $E,TE,..., T^{n-1}E$ are disjoint and $μ_i(E\cup TE\cup...\cup T^{n-1}E) > 1 - \e, i= 1,...,k$. Several corollaries of this result are given. In particular, it is proved that for any aperiodic $T\in Homeo(X)$ the set of all homeomorphisms conjugate to $T$ is dense in the set of aperiodic homeomorphisms.
