Finite Factor Representations of Higman-Thompson groups

We prove that the only finite factor-representations of the Higman-Thompson groups $\{F_{n,r}\}$, $ \{G_{n,r}\}$ are the regular representations and scalar representations arising from group abelianizations. As a corollary, we obtain that any measure-preserving ergodic action of a simple Higman-Thompson group must be essentially free. Finite factor representations of other classes of groups are also discussed.

On Algebraic Properties of Topological Full Groups

In the paper we discuss the algebraic structure of topological full group $[[T]]$ of a Cantor minimal system $(X,T)$. We show that the topological full group $[[T]]$ has the structure similar to a union of permutational wreath products of group $\mathbb Z$. This allows us to prove that the topological full groups are locally embeddable into finite groups; give an elmentary proof of the fact that group $[[T]]'$ is infinitely presented; and provide explicit examples of maximal locally finite subgroups of $[[T]]$. We also show that the commutator subgroup $[[T]]'$, which is simple and finitely-generated for minimal subshifts, is decomposable into a product of two locally finite groups and that the groups $[[T]]$ and $[[T]]'$ possess continuous ergodic invariant random subgroups.

Finite Rank Bratteli Diagrams: Structure of Invariant Measures

We consider Bratteli diagrams of finite rank (not necessarily simple) and ergodic invariant measures with respect to the cofinal equivalence relation on their path spaces. It is shown that every ergodic invariant measure (finite or "regular" infinite) is obtained by an extension from a simple subdiagram. We further investigate quantitative properties of these measures, which are mainly determined by the asymptotic behavior of products of incidence matrices. A number of sufficient conditions for unique ergodicity are obtained. One of these is a condition of exact finite rank, which parallels a similar notion in measurable dynamics. Several examples illustrate the broad range of possible behavior of finite type diagrams and invariant measures on them. We then prove that the Vershik map on the path space of an exact finite rank diagram cannot be strongly mixing, independent of the ordering. On the other hand, for the so-called "consecutive" ordering, the Vershik map is not strongly mixing on all finite rank diagrams.

On Characters of Inductive Limits of Symmetric Groups

In the paper we completely describe characters (central positive-definite functions) of simple locally finite groups that can be represented as inductive limits of (products of) symmetric groups under block diagonal embeddings. Each such group $G$ defines an infinite graph (Bratteli diagram) that encodes the embedding scheme. The group $G$ acts on the space $X$ of infinite paths of the associated Bratteli diagram by changing initial edges of paths. Assuming the finiteness of the set of ergodic measures for the system $(X,G)$, we establish that each indecomposable character $χ:G \rightarrow \mathbb C$ is uniquely defined by the formula $χ(g) = μ_1(Fix(g))^{α_1}...μ_k(Fix(g))^{α_k}$, where $μ_1,...,μ_k$ are $G$-ergodic measures, $Fix(g) = \{x\in X: gx = x\}$, and $α_1,...,α_k\in \{0,1,...,\infty\}$. We illustrate our results on the group of rational permutations of the unit interval.

Full Groups and Orbit Equivalence in Cantor Dynamics

In this note we consider dynamical systems $(X,G)$ on a Cantor set $X$ satisfying some mild technical conditions. The considered class includes, in particular, minimal and transitive aperiodic systems. We prove that two such systems $(X_1,G_1)$ and $(X_2,G_2)$ are orbit equivalent if and only if their full groups are isomorphic as abstract groups. This result is a topological version of the well-known Dye's theorem established originally for ergodic measure-preserving actions.

On approximation of homeomorphisms of a Cantor set

We continue to study topological properties of the group Homeo(X) of all homeomorphisms of a Cantor set X with respect to the uniform topology tau, which was started in the paper (S. Bezuglyi, A.H. Dooley, and J. Kwiatkowski, Topologies on the group of homeomorphisms of a Cantor set, ArXiv e-print math.DS/0410507, 2004). We prove that the set of periodic homeomorphisms is tau-dense in Homeo(X) and deduce from this result that the topological group (Homeo(X), tau) has the Rokhlin property, i.e., there exists a homeomorphism whose conjugate class is tau-dense in Homeo(X). We also show that for any homeomorphism T the topological full group [[T]] is tau-dense in the full group [T].

Smooth automorphisms and path-connectedness in Borel dynamics

Let $Aut(X,\mathcal{B})$ be the group of all Borel automorphisms of a standard Borel space $(X,\mathcal{B})$. We study topological properties of $Aut(X,\mathcal{B})$ with respect to the uniform and weak topologies, $τ$ and $p$, defined in [Bezuglyi S., Dooley A.H., Kwiatkowski J., Topologies on the group of Borel automorphisms of a standard Borel space, Preprint, 2003]. It is proved that the class of smooth automorphisms is dense in $(Aut(X,\mathcal B),p)$. Let $Ctbl(X)$ denote the group of Borel automorphisms with countable support. It is shown that the topological group $Aut_0(X,\mathcal B)=Aut(X,\mathcal{B})/Ctbl(X)$ is path-connected with respect to the quotient topology $τ_0$. It is also proved that $Aut_0(X,\mathcal B)$ has the Rokhlin property in the quotient topology $p_0$, i.e., the action of $Aut_0(X,\mathcal B)$ on itself by conjugation is topologically transitive.

The Rokhlin lemma for homeomorphisms of a Cantor set

For a Cantor set $X$, let $Homeo(X)$ denote the group of all homeomorphisms of $X$. The main result of this note is the following theorem. Let $T\in Homeo(X)$ be an aperiodic homeomorphism, let $μ_1,μ_2,...,μ_k$ be Borel probability measures on $X$, $\e> 0$, and $n \ge 2$. Then there exists a clopen set $E\subset X$ such that the sets $E,TE,..., T^{n-1}E$ are disjoint and $μ_i(E\cup TE\cup...\cup T^{n-1}E) > 1 - \e, i= 1,...,k$. Several corollaries of this result are given. In particular, it is proved that for any aperiodic $T\in Homeo(X)$ the set of all homeomorphisms conjugate to $T$ is dense in the set of aperiodic homeomorphisms.
