Non-local planelike minimizers and $Γ$-convergence of periodic energies to a local anisotropic perimeter

We investigate a homogenization problem related to a non-local interface energy with a periodic forcing term. We show the existence of planelike minimizers for such energy. Moreover, we prove that, under suitable assumptions on the non-local kernel and the external field, the sequence of rescaled energies $Γ$-converges to a suitable local anisotropic perimeter, where the anisotropy is defined as the limit of the normalized energy of a planelike minimizer in larger and larger cubes (i.e., what is called in jargon "stable norm"). To obtain this, we also establish several auxiliary results, including: the minimality of the level sets of the minimizers, explicit bounds on the oscillations of the minimizers, density estimates for almost minimizers, and non-local perimeter estimates in the large.

On a Sobolev critical problem for the superposition of a local and nonlocal operator with the "wrong sign''

We study a critical problem for an operator of mixed order obtained by the superposition of a Laplacian with a fractional Laplacian. The main novelty is that we consider a mixed operator of the form $-Δ- γ(-Δ)^s$, namely we suppose that the fractional Laplacian has the ``wrong sign'' and can be seen as a nonlocal perturbation of the purely local case, which is needed to produce a nontrivial solution of the critical problem.

Classification of global solutions of a free boundary problem in the plane

We classify nontrivial, nonnegative, positively homogeneous solutions of the equation \begin{equation*} Δu=γu^{γ-1} \end{equation*} in the plane. The problem is motivated by the analysis of the classical Alt-Phillips free boundary problem, but considered here with negative exponents $γ$. The proof relies on several bespoke results for ordinary differential equations.

Efficiency functionals for the Lévy flight foraging hypothesis

We consider a forager diffusing via a fractional heat equation and we introduce several efficiency functionals whose optimality is discussed in relation to the Lévy exponent of the evolution equation. Several biological scenarios, such as a target close to the forager, a sparse environment, a target located away from the forager and two targets are specifically taken into account. The optimal strategies of each of these configurations are here analyzed explicitly also with the aid of some special functions of classical flavor and the results are confronted with the existing paradigms of the Lévy foraging hypothesis. Interestingly, one discovers bifurcation phenomena in which a sudden switch occurs between an optimal (but somehow unreliable) Lévy foraging pattern of inverse square law type and a less ideal (but somehow more secure) classical Brownian motion strategy. Additionally, optimal foraging strategies can be detected in the vicinity of the Brownian one even in cases in which the Brownian one is pessimizing an efficiency functional.

Integral operators defined "up to a polynomial''

We introduce a suitable notion of integral operators (comprising the fractional Laplacian as a particular case) acting on functions with minimal requirements at infinity. For these functions, the classical definition would lead to divergent expressions, thus we replace it with an appropriate framework obtained by a cut-off procedure. The notion obtained in this way quotients out the polynomials which produce the divergent pattern once the cut-off is removed. We also present results of stability under the appropriate notion of convergence and compatibility results between polynomials of different orders. Additionally, we address the solvability of the Dirichlet problem. The theory is developed in general in the pointwise sense. A viscosity counterpart is also presented under the additional assumption that the interaction kernel has a sign, in conformity with the maximum principle structure.

Nonlocal capillarity for anisotropic kernels

We study a nonlocal capillarity problem with interaction kernels that are possibly anisotropic and not necessarily invariant under scaling. In particular, the lack of scale invariance will be modeled via two different fractional exponents $s_1, s_2\in (0,1)$ which take into account the possibility that the container and the environment present different features with respect to particle interactions. We determine a nonlocal Young's law for the contact angle and discuss the unique solvability of the corresponding equation in terms of the interaction kernels and of the relative adhesion coefficient.

Radial symmetry of solutions to anisotropic and weighted diffusion equations with discontinuous nonlinearities

We prove radial symmetry for bounded nonnegative solutions of a weighted anisotropic problem. Given the anisotropic setting that we deal with, the term "radial" is understood in the Finsler framework. In the whole space, J. Serra obtained the symmetry result in the isotropic unweighted setting. In this case we provide the extension of his result to the anisotropic setting. This provides a generalization to the anisotropic setting of a celebrated result due to Gidas-Ni-Nirenberg and such a generalization is new even for in the case of linear operators whenever the dimension is greater than 2. In proper cones, the results presented are new even in the isotropic and unweighted setting for suitable nonlinear cases. Even for the previously known case of unweighted isotropic setting, the present paper provides an approach to the problem by exploiting integral (in)equalities which is new for $N>2$: this complements the corresponding symmetry result obtained via the moving planes method by Berestycki-Pacella.

The Fractional Malmheden Theorem

We provide a fractional counterpart of the classical results by Schwarz and Malmheden on harmonic functions. From that we obtain a representation formula for $s$-harmonic functions as a linear superposition of weighted classical harmonic functions which also entails a new proof of the fractional Harnack inequality. This proof also leads to optimal constants for the fractional Harnack inequality in the ball.

The stickiness property for antisymmetric nonlocal minimal graphs

We show that arbitrarily small antisymmetric perturbations of the zero function are sufficient to produce the stickiness phenomenon for planar nonlocal minimal graphs (with the same quantitative bounds obtained for the case of even symmetric perturbations, up to multiplicative constants). In proving this result, one also establishes an odd symmetric version of the maximum principle for nonlocal minimal graphs, according to which the odd symmetric minimizer is positive in the direction of the positive bump and negative in the direction of the negative bump.

(Non)local logistic equations with Neumann conditions

We consider here a problem of population dynamics modeled on a logistic equation with both classical and nonlocal diffusion, possibly in combination with a pollination term. The environment considered is a niche with zero-flux, according to a new type of Neumann condition. We discuss the situations that are more favorable for the survival of the species, in terms of the first positive eigenvalue. Quite surprisingly, the eigenvalue analysis for the one dimensional case is structurally different than the higher dimensional setting, and it sensibly depends on the nonlocal character of the dispersal. The mathematical framework of this problem takes into consideration the equation $$ -αΔu +β(-Δ)^su =(m-μu)u+τ\;J\star u \qquad{\mbox{in }}\; Ω,$$ where $m$ can change sign. This equation is endowed with a set of Neumann condition that combines the classical normal derivative prescription and the nonlocal condition introduced in [S. Dipierro, X. Ros-Oton, E. Valdinoci, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. (2017)]. We will establish the existence of a minimal solution for this problem and provide a throughout discussion on whether it is possible to obtain non-trivial solutions (corresponding to the survival of the population). The investigation will rely on a quantitative analysis of the first eigenvalue of the associated problem and on precise asymptotics for large lower and upper bounds of the resource. In this, we also analyze the role played by the optimization strategy in the distribution of the resources, showing concrete examples that are unfavorable for survival, in spite of the large resources that are available in the environment.

Global gradient estimates for nonlinear parabolic operators

We consider a parabolic equation driven by a nonlinear diffusive operator and we obtain a gradient estimate in the domain where the equation takes place. This estimate depends on the structural constants of the equation, on the geometry of the ambient space and on the initial and boundary data. As a byproduct, one easily obtains a universal interior estimate, not depending on the parabolic data. The setting taken into account includes sourcing terms and general diffusion coefficients. The results are new, to the best of our knowledge, even in the Euclidean setting, though we treat here also the case of a complete Riemannian manifold.

On divergent fractional Laplace equations

We consider the divergent fractional Laplace operator presented in [Dipierro-Savin-Valdinoci, Rev. Mat. Iberoam.] and we prove three types of results. Firstly, we show that any given function can be locally shadowed by a solution of a divergent fractional Laplace equation which is also prescribed in a neighborhood of infinity. Secondly, we take into account the Dirichlet problem for the divergent fractional Laplace equation, proving the existence of a solution and characterizing its multiplicity. Finally, we take into account the case of nonlinear equations, obtaining a new approximation results. These results maintain their interest also in the case of functions for which the fractional Laplacian can be defined in the usual sense.

(Non)local $Γ$-convergence

We present some long-range interaction models for phase coexistence which have recently appeared in the literature, recalling also their relation to classical interface and capillarity problems. In this note, the main focus will be on the $Γ$-convergence methods, emphasizing similarities and differences between the classical theory and the new trends of investigation. In doing so, we also obtain some new, more precise $Γ$-convergence results in terms of "interior" and "exterior" contributions. We also discuss the structural differences between $Γ$-limits and "pointwise" limits, especially concerning the "boundary terms".

A comparison between the nonlocal and the classical worlds: minimal surfaces, phase transitions, and geometric flows

The nonlocal world presents an abundance of surprises and wonders to discover. These special properties of the nonlocal world are usually the consequence of long-range interactions, which, especially in presence of geometric structures and nonlinear phenomena, end up producing a variety of novel patterns. We will briefly discuss some of these features, focusing on the case of (non)local minimal surfaces, (non)local phase coexistence models, and (non)local geometric flows.

A free boundary problem driven by the biharmonic operator

In this paper we consider the minimization of the functional \[ J[u]:=\int_Ω|Δu|^2+χ_{\{u>0\}} \] in the admissible class of functions \[ \mathcal A:= \left\{u\in W^{2, 2}(Ω) {\mbox{ s.t. }} u-u_0\in W^{1,2}_0(Ω) \right\}. \] Here, $Ω$ is a smooth and bounded domain and $u_0\in W^{2,2}(Ω)$ is a given function defining the Navier type boundary condition. The scale invariance of the problem suggests that, at the singular points of the free boundary, quadratic growth of $u$ is expected. We prove that $u$ is quadratically nondegenerate at the singular free boundary points using a refinement of Whitney's cube decomposition, which applies, if, for instance, the set $\{ u>0\}$ is a John domain. The optimal growth is linked with the approximate symmetries of the free boundary. More precisely, if at small scales the free boundary can be approximated by zero level sets of a quadratic degree two homogeneous polynomial, then we say that $\partial\{ u>0\}$ is rank-2 flat. Using a dichotomy method for nonlinear free boundary problems, we also show that, at the free boundary points $x\in Ω$ where $\nabla u(x)=0$, the free boundary is either well approximated by zero sets of quadratic polynomials, i.e. $\partial\{ u>0\}$ is rank-2 flat, or $u$ has quadratic growth. Differently from the classical free boundary problems driven by the Laplacian operator, the one-phase minimizers present structural differences with respect to the minimizers, and one notion is not included into the other. In addition, one-phase minimizers arise from the combination of a volume type free boundary problem and an obstacle type problem, hence their growth condition is influenced in a non-standard way by these two ingredients.

A Serrin-type problem with partial knowledge of the domain

We present a quantitative estimate for the radially symmetric configuration concerning a Serrin-type overdetermined problem for the torsional rigidity in a bounded domain $Ω$, when the equation is known on $Ω\setminus \overlineω$ only, for some open subset $ω\Subset Ω$. The problem has concrete motivations in optimal heating with malfunctioning, laminar flows and beams with small inhomogeneities.

Linear theory for a mixed operator with Neumann conditions

We consider here a new type of mixed local and nonlocal equation under suitable Neumann conditions. We discuss the spectral properties associated to a weighted eigenvalue problem and present a global bound for subsolutions. The Neumann condition that we take into account comprises, as a particular case, the one that has been recently introduced in [S. Dipierro, X. Ros-Oton, E. Valdinoci, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. (2017)]. Also, the results that we present here find a natural application to a logistic equation motivated by biological problems that has been recently considered in [S. Dipierro, E. Proietti Lippi, E. Valdinoci, preprint (2020)].

Minimisers of a fractional seminorm and nonlocal minimal surfaces

The recent literature has intensively studied two classes of nonlocal variational problems, namely the ones related to the minimisation of energy functionals that act on functions in suitable Sobolev-Gagliardo spaces, and the ones related to the minimisation of fractional perimeters that act on measurable sets of the Euclidean space. In this article, we relate these two types of variational problems. In particular, we investigate the connection between the nonlocal minimal surfaces and the minimisers of the $W^{s,1}$-seminorm. In particular, we show that a function is a minimiser for the fractional seminorm if and only if its level sets are minimisers for the fractional perimeter, and that the characteristic function of a nonlocal minimal surface is a minimiser for the fractional seminorm; we also provide an existence result for minimisers of the fractional seminorm, an explicit non-uniqueness example for nonlocal minimal surfaces, and a Yin-Yang result describing the full and void patterns of nonlocal minimal surfaces.

Minimizing cones for fractional capillarity problems

We consider a fractional version of Gauss capillarity energy. A suitable extension problem is introduced to derive a boundary monotonicity formula for local minimizers of this fractional capillarity energy. As a consequence, blow-up limits of local minimizers are shown to subsequentially converge to minimizing cones. Finally, we show that in the planar case there is only one possible fractional minimizing cone, the one determined by the fractional version of Young's law.

preprint2020arXiv

Nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane are generically sticky

We prove that nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane exhibit generically stickiness effects and boundary discontinuities. More precisely, we show that if a nonlocal minimal graph in a slab is continuous up to the boundary, then arbitrarily small perturbations of the far-away data produce boundary discontinuities. Hence, either a nonlocal minimal graph is discontinuous at the boundary, or a small perturbation of the prescribed conditions produces boundary discontinuities. The proof relies on a sliding method combined with a fine boundary regularity analysis, based on a discontinuity/smoothness alternative. Namely, we establish that nonlocal minimal graphs are either discontinuous at the boundary or their derivative is Hölder continuous up to the boundary. In this spirit, we prove that the boundary regularity of nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane "jumps" from discontinuous to $C^{1,γ}$, with no intermediate possibilities allowed. In particular, we deduce that the nonlocal curvature equation is always satisfied up to the boundary. As an interesting byproduct of our analysis, one obtains a detailed understanding of the "switch" between the regime of continuous (and hence differentiable) nonlocal minimal graphs to that of discontinuous (and hence with differentiable inverse) ones.

On the mean value property of fractional harmonic functions

As well known, harmonic functions satisfy the mean value property, namely the average of the function over a ball is equal to its value at the center. This fact naturally raises the question on whether this is a characterizing feature of balls, namely whether a set for which all harmonic functions satisfy the mean value property is necessarily a ball. This question was investigated by several authors, and was finally elegantly, completely and positively settled by Ülkü Kuran, with an artful use of elementary techniques. This classical problem has been recently fleshed out by Giovanni Cupini, Nicola Fusco, Ermanno Lanconelli and Xiao Zhong who proved a quantitative stability result for the mean value formula, showing that a suitable "mean value gap" (measuring the normalized difference between the average of harmonic functions on a given set and their pointwise value) is bounded from below by the Lebesgue measure of the "gap" between the set and the ball (and, consequently, by the Fraenkel asymmetry of the set). That is, if a domain "almost" satisfies the mean value property, then it must be necessarily close to a ball. Here we investigate the nonlocal counterparts of these results. In particular we will prove a classification result and a stability result, establishing that: if fractional harmonic functions enjoy a suitable exterior average property for a given domain, then the domain is necessarily a ball, a suitable "nonlocal mean value gap" is bounded from below by an appropriate measure of the difference between the set and the ball. Differently from the classical case, some of our arguments rely on purely nonlocal properties, with no classical counterpart, such as the fact that "all functions are locally fractional harmonic up to a small error".

Semilinear elliptic equations involving mixed local and nonlocal operators

In this paper, we consider an elliptic operator obtained as the superposition of a classical second-order differential operator and a nonlocal operator of fractional type. Though the methods that we develop are quite general, for concreteness we focus on the case in which the operator takes the form $-Δ+(-Δ)^s$, with $s\in(0,1)$. We focus here on symmetry properties of the solutions and we prove a radial symmetry result, based on the moving plane method, and a one-dimensional symmetry result, related to a classical conjecture by G.W. Gibbons.

A logistic equation with nonlocal interactions

We consider here a logistic equation, modeling processes of nonlocal character both in the diffusion and proliferation terms. More precisely, for populations that propagate according to a Lévy process and can reach resources in a neighborhood of their position, we compare (and find explicit threshold for survival) the local and nonlocal case. As ambient space, we can consider: bounded domains, periodic environments, and transition problems, where the environment consists of a block of infinitesimal diffusion and an adjacent nonlocal one. In each of these cases, we analyze the existence/nonexistence of solutions in terms of the spectral properties of the domain. In particular, we give a detailed description of the fact that nonlocal populations may better adapt to sparse resources and small environments.

Bifurcation results for a fractional elliptic equation with critical exponent in R^n

In this paper we study some nonlinear elliptic equations in $\R^n$ obtained as a perturbation of the problem with the fractional critical Sobolev exponent, that is $$ (-Δ)^s u = ε\,h\,u^q + u^p \ {in}\R^n,$$ where $s\in(0,1)$, $n>4s$, $ε>0$ is a small parameter, $p=\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}$, $0<q<p$ and $h$ is a continuous and compactly supported function. To construct solutions to this equation, we use the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, that takes advantage of the variational structure of the problem. For this, the case $0<q<1$ is particularly difficult, due to the lack of regularity of the associated energy functional, and we need to introduce a new functional setting and develop an appropriate fractional elliptic regularity theory.

Boundary behavior of nonlocal minimal surfaces

We consider the behavior of the nonlocal minimal surfaces in the vicinity of the boundary. By a series of detailed examples, we show that nonlocal minimal surfaces may stick at the boundary of the domain, even when the domain is smooth and convex. This is a purely nonlocal phenomenon, and it is in sharp contrast with the boundary properties of the classical minimal surfaces. In particular, we show stickiness phenomena to half-balls when the datum outside the ball is a small half-ring and to the side of a two-dimensional box when the oscillation between the datum on the right and on the left is large enough. When the fractional parameter is small, the sticking effects may become more and more evident. Moreover, we show that lines in the plane are unstable at the boundary: namely, small compactly supported perturbations of lines cause the minimizers in a slab to stick at the boundary, by a quantity that is proportional to a power of the perturbation. In all the examples, we present concrete estimates on the stickiness phenomena. Also, we construct a family of compactly supported barriers which can have independent interest.

Chaotic orbits for systems of nonlocal equations

We consider a system of nonlocal equations driven by a perturbed periodic potential. We construct multibump solutions that connect one integer point to another one in a prescribed way. In particular, heteroclinc, homoclinic and chaotic trajectories are constructed. This is the first attempt to consider a nonlocal version of this type of dynamical systems in a variational setting and the first result regarding symbolic dynamics in a fractional framework.

Continuity and density results for a one-phase nonlocal free boundary problem

We consider a one-phase nonlocal free boundary problem obtained by the superposition of a fractional Dirichlet energy plus a nonlocal perimeter functional. We prove that the minimizers are Hölder continuous and the free boundary has positive density from both sides. For this, we also introduce a new notion of fractional harmonic replacement in the extended variables and we study its basic properties.

Definition of fractional Laplacian for functions with polynomial growth\tha

We introduce a notion of fractional Laplacian for functions which grow more than linearly at infinity. In such case, the operator is not defined in the classical sense: nevertheless, we can give an ad-hoc definition which can be useful for applications in various fields, such as blowup and free boundary problems. In this setting, when the solution has a polynomial growth at infinity, the right hand side of the equation is not just a function, but an equivalence class of functions modulo polynomials of a fixed order. We also give a sharp version of the Schauder estimates in this framework, in which the full smooth Hölder norm of the solution is controlled in terms of the seminorm of the nonlinearity. Though the method presented is very general and potentially works for general nonlocal operators, for clarity and concreteness we focus here on the case of the fractional Laplacian.

Fractional elliptic problems with critical growth in the whole of $\R^n$

We study the following nonlinear and nonlocal elliptic equation in~$\R^n$ $$ (-Δ)^s u = ε\,h\,u^q + u^p \ {\mbox{ in }}\R^n, $$ where~$s\in(0,1)$, $n>2s$, $ε>0$ is a small parameter, $p=\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}$, $q\in(0,1)$, and~$h\in L^1(\R^n)\cap L^\infty(\R^n)$. The problem has a variational structure, and this allows us to find a positive solution by looking at critical points of a suitable energy functional. In particular, in this paper, we find a local minimum and a mountain pass solution of this functional. One of the crucial ingredient is a Concentration-Compactness principle. Some difficulties arise from the nonlocal structure of the problem and from the fact that we deal with an equation in the whole of~$\R^n$ (and this causes lack of compactness of some embeddings). We overcome these difficulties by looking at an equivalent extended problem.

Nonlocal minimal surfaces: interior regularity, quantitative estimates and boundary stickiness

We consider surfaces which minimize a nonlocal perimeter functional and we discuss their interior regularity and rigidity properties, in a quantitative and qualitative way, and their (perhaps rather surprising) boundary behavior. We present at least a sketch of the proofs of these results, in a way that aims to be as elementary and self contained as possible.

On stable solutions of boundary reaction-diffusion equations and applications to nonlocal problems with Neumann data

We study reaction-diffusion equations in cylinders with possibly nonlinear diffusion and possibly nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions. We provide a geometric Poincaré-type inequality and classification results for stable solutions, and we apply them to the study of an associated nonlocal problem. We also establish a counterexample in the corresponding framework for the fractional Laplacian.

The Phillip Island penguin parade (a mathematical treatment)

Penguins are flightless, so they are forced to walk while on land. In particular, they show rather specific behaviors in their homecoming, which are interesting to observe and to describe analytically. In this paper, we present a simple mathematical formulation to describe the little penguins parade in Phillip Island. We observed that penguins have the tendency to waddle back and forth on the shore to create a sufficiently large group and then walk home compactly together. The mathematical framework that we introduce describes this phenomenon, by taking into account "natural parameters" such as the eye-sight of the penguins, their cruising speed and the possible "fear" of animals. On the one hand, this favors the formation of conglomerates of penguins that gather together, but, on the other hand, this may lead to the "panic" of isolated and exposed individuals. The model that we propose is based on a set of ordinary differential equations. Due to the discontinuous behavior of the speed of the penguins, the mathematical treatment (to get existence and uniqueness of the solution) is based on a "stop-and-go" procedure. We use this setting to provide rigorous examples in which at least some penguins manage to safely return home (there are also cases in which some penguins freeze due to panic). To facilitate the intuition of the model, we also present some simple numerical simulations that can be compared with the actual movement of the penguins parade.

A new discrete monotonicity formula with application to a two-phase free boundary problem in dimension two

We continue the analysis of the two-phase free boundary problems initiated in \cite{DK}, where we studied the linear growth of minimizers in a Bernoulli type free boundary problem at the non-flat points and the related regularity of free boundary. There, we also defined the functional $$ϕ_p(r,u,x_0)=\frac1{r^4}\int_{B_r(x_0)}\frac{|\nabla u^+(x)|^p}{|x-x_0|^{N-2}}dx\int_{B_r(x_0)}\frac{|\nabla u^-(x)|^p}{|x-x_0|^{N-2}}dx$$ where $x_0$ is a free boundary point, i.e. $x_0\in\partial\{u>0\}$ and $u$ is a minimizer of the functional $$J(u):=\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p +λ_+^p\,χ_{\{u>0\}} +λ_-^p\,χ_{\{u\le 0\}}, $$ for some bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^N$ and positive constants $λ_\pm$ with $Λ:=λ_+^p-λ^p_->0$. Here we show the discrete monotonicity of $ϕ_p(r,u,x_0)$ in two spatial dimensions at non-flat points, when $p$ is sufficiently close to 2, and then establish the linear growth. A new feature of our approach is the anisotropic scaling argument discussed in Section 4.

A nonlocal free boundary problem

Given~$s,σ\in(0,1)$ and a bounded domain~$Ω\subset\R^n$, we consider the following minimization problem of $s$-Dirichlet plus $σ$-perimeter type $$ [u]_{ H^s(\R^{2n}\setminus(Ω^c)^2) } + \Per_σ\left(\{u>0\},Ω\right), $$ where~$[ \cdot]_{H^s}$ is the fractional Gagliardo seminorm and $\Per_σ$ is the fractional perimeter. Among other results, we prove a monotonicity formula for the minimizers, glueing lemmata, uniform energy bounds, convergence results, a regularity theory for the planar cones and a trivialization result for the flat case. Several classical free boundary problems are limit cases of the one that we consider in this paper, as $s\nearrow1$, $σ\nearrow1$ or~$σ\searrow0$.

Nonlocal Delaunay surfaces

We construct codimension 1 surfaces of any dimension that minimize a periodic nonlocal perimeter functional among surfaces that are periodic, cylindrically symmetric and decreasing. These surfaces may be seen as a nonlocal analogue of the classical Delaunay surfaces (onduloids). For small volume, most of their mass tends to be concentrated in a periodic array and the surfaces are close to a periodic array of balls (in fact, we give explicit quantitative bounds on these facts).

Qualitative properties of positive solutions to nonlocal critical problems involving the Hardy-Leray potential

We prove the existence, qualitative properties and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions to the doubly critical problem $$ (-Δ)^s u=\vartheta\frac{u}{|x|^{2s}}+u^{2_s^*-1}, \quad u\in \dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^N).$$ The technique that we use to prove the existence is based on variational arguments. The qualitative properties are obtained by using of the moving plane method, in a nonlocal setting, on the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$ and by some comparison results. Moreover, in order to find the asymptotic behavior of solutions, we use a representation result that allows to transform the original problem into a different nonlocal problem in a weighted fractional space.

Stratification of free boundary points for a two-phase variational problem

In this paper we study the two-phase Bernoulli type free boundary problem arising from the minimization of the functional $$ J(u):=\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p +λ_+^p\,χ_{\{u>0\}} +λ_-^p\,χ_{\{u\le 0\}}, \quad 1<p<\infty. $$ Here $Ω\subset \R^N$ is a bounded smooth domain and $λ_\pm$ are positive constants such that $λ_+^p-λ^p_->0$. We prove the following dichotomy: if $x_0$ is a free boundary point then either the free boundary is smooth near $x_0$ or $u$ has linear growth at $x_0$. Furthermore, we show that for $p>1$ the free boundary has locally finite perimeter and the set of non-smooth points of free boundary is of zero $(N-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Our approach is new even for the classical case $p=2$.

Concentration phenomena for the nonlocal Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet datum

For a smooth, bounded domain $Ω$, $s\in(0,1)$, $p\in \left(1,\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}\right)$ we consider the nonlocal equation $$ ε^{2s} (-Δ)^s u+u=u^p \quad {\mbox{in}}Ω$$ with zero Dirichlet datum and a small parameter $ε>0$. We construct a family of solutions that concentrate as $ε\to 0$ at an interior point of the domain in the form of a scaling of the ground state in entire space. Unlike the classical case $s=1$, the leading order of the associated reduced energy functional in a variational reduction procedure is of polynomial instead of exponential order on the distance from the boundary, due to the nonlocal effect. Delicate analysis is needed to overcome the lack of localization, in particular establishing the rather unexpected asymptotics for the Green function of $ ε^{2s} (-Δ)^s +1$ in the expanding domain $ε^{-1}Ω$ with zero exterior datum.

Nonlocal problems with Neumann boundary conditions

We introduce a new Neumann problem for the fractional Laplacian arising from a simple probabilistic consideration, and we discuss the basic properties of this model. We can consider both elliptic and parabolic equations in any domain. In addition, we formulate problems with nonhomogeneous Neumann conditions, and also with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann conditions, all of them having a clear probabilistic interpretation. We prove that solutions to the fractional heat equation with homogeneous Neumann conditions have the following natural properties: conservation of mass inside $Ω$, decreasing energy, and convergence to a constant as $t\to \infty$. Moreover, for the elliptic case we give the variational formulation of the problem, and establish existence of solutions. We also study the limit properties and the boundary behavior induced by this nonlocal Neumann condition. For concreteness, one may think that our nonlocal analogue of the classical Neumann condition~$\partial_νu=0$ on~$\partialΩ$ consists in the nonlocal prescription $$ \int_Ω\frac{u(x)-u(y)}{|x-y|^{n+2s}}\,dy=0 \ {\mbox{ for }} x\in\R^n\setminus\overlineΩ.$$

A geometric inequality and a symmetry result for elliptic systems involving the fractional Laplacian

We study the symmetry properties for solutions of elliptic systems of the type (-Δ)^{s_1} u = F_1(u, v), (-Δ)^{s_2} v= F_2(u, v), where $F\in C^{1,1}_{loc}(\R^2)$, $s_1,s_2\in (0,1)$ and the operator $(-Δ)^s$ is the so-called fractional Laplacian. We obtain some Poincaré-type formulas for the $α$-harmonic extension in the half-space, that we use to prove a symmetry result both for stable and for monotone solutions.

Geometric inequalities and symmetry results for elliptic systems

We obtain some Poincaré type formulas, that we use, together with the level set analysis, to detect the one-dimensional symmetry of monotone and stable solutions of possibly degenerate elliptic systems of the form {eqnarray*} {{array}{ll} div(a(|\nabla u|) \nabla u) = F_1(u, v), div(b(|\nabla v|) \nabla v) = F_2(u, v), {array}. {eqnarray*} where $F\in C^{1,1}_{loc}(\R^2)$. Our setting is very general, and it comprises, as a particular case, a conjecture of De Giorgi for phase separations in $\R^2$.

Hardy inequalities on Riemannian manifolds and applications

We prove a simple sufficient criteria to obtain some Hardy inequalities on Riemannian manifolds related to quasilinear second-order differential operator $Δ_{p}u := \Div(\abs{\nabla u}^{p-2}\nabla u)$. Namely, if $ρ$ is a nonnegative weight such that $-Δ_{p}ρ\geq0$, then the Hardy inequality $$c\int_{M}\frac{\abs{u}^{p}}{ρ^{p}}\abs{\nabla ρ}^{p} dv_{g} \leq \int_{M}\abs{\nabla u}^{p} dv_{g}, \quad u\in\Cinfinito_{0}(M)$$ holds. We show concrete examples specializing the function $ρ$.

Strongly nonlocal dislocation dynamics in crystals

We consider the equation $$v_t=L_s v-W'(v)+σ_ε(t,x) \quad {\mbox{ in }} (0,+\infty)\times\R,$$ where $L_s$ is an integro-differential operator of order $2s$, with $s\in(0,1)$, $W$ is a periodic potential, and $σ_ε$ is a small external stress. The solution $v$ represents the atomic dislocation in the Peierls--Nabarro model for crystals, and we specifically consider the case $s\in(0,1/2)$, which takes into account a strongly nonlocal elastic term. We study the evolution of such dislocation function for macroscopic space and time scales, namely we introduce the function $$ v_ε(t,x):=v\left(\frac{t}{ε^{1+2s}},\frac{x}ε\right). $$ We show that, for small $ε$, the function $v_ε$ approaches the sum of step functions. From the physical point of view, this shows that the dislocations have the tendency to concentrate at single points of the crystal, where the size of the slip coincides with the natural periodicity of the medium. We also show that the motion of these dislocation points is governed by an interior repulsive potential that is superposed to an elastic reaction to the external stress.

Concentration of solutions for a singularly perturbed mixed problem in non smooth domains

We consider a singularly perturbed problem with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\R^{n}$ whose boundary has an $(n-2)$-dimensional singularity. Assuming $1<p<\frac{n+2}{n-2}$, we prove that, under suitable geometric conditions on the boundary of the domain, there exist solutions which approach the intersection of the Neumann and the Dirichlet parts as the singular perturbation parameter tends to zero.

Existence and symmetry results for a Schrödinger type problem involving the fractional Laplacian

This paper deals with the following class of nonlocal Schrödinger equations $$ \displaystyle (-Δ)^s u + u = |u|^{p-1}u \ \ \text{in} \ \mathbb{R}^N, \quad \text{for} \ s\in (0,1). $$ We prove existence and symmetry results for the solutions $u$ in the fractional Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^N)$. Our results are in clear accordance with those for the classical local counterpart, that is when $s=1$.

Symmetry results for stable and monotone solutions to fibered systems of PDEs

We study the symmetry properties for solutions of elliptic systems of the type {ll}-\dive(a_1(x,|\nabla u^1|(X))\nabla u^1(X))=F_{1}(x, u^1(X),..., u^n(X)), ... -\dive(a_n(x,|\nabla u^n|(X))\nabla u^n(X))=F_{n}(x, u^1(X),..., u^n(X)), where $x\in \R^m$ with $1\leq m< N$, $X=(x,y)\in \R^m\times \R^{N-m}$, and $F_{1},..., F_{n}$ are the derivatives with respect to $ξ^1,..., ξ^n$ of some $F=F(x,ξ^1,..., ξ^n)$ such that for any $i=1,..., n$ and any fixed $(x,ξ^1,..., ξ^{i-1},ξ^{i+1},..., ξ^n)\in \R^m\times \R^{n-1}$ the map $ξ^i\to F(x,ξ^1,...,ξ^i,..., ξ^n)$ belongs to $C^2(\R)$. We obtain a Poincaré-type formula for the solutions of the system and we use it to prove a symmetry result both for stable and for monotone solutions.
