On the Regularity of Optimal Transports between Degenerate Densities

We study the most common image and informal description of the optimal transport problem for quadratic cost, also known as the second boundary value problem for the Monge--Ampère equation -- What is the most efficient way to fill a hole with a given pile of sand? -- by proving regularity results for optimal transports between degenerate densities. In particular, our work contains an analysis of the setting in which holes and sandpiles are represented by absolutely continuous measures concentrated on bounded convex domains whose densities behave like nonnegative powers of the distance functions to the boundaries of these domains.

Uniform density estimates and $Γ$-convergence for the Alt-Phillips functional of negative powers

We obtain density estimates for the free boundaries of minimizers $u \ge 0$ of the Alt-Phillips functional involving negative power potentials $$\int_Ω\left(|\nabla u|^2 + u^{-γ} χ_{\{u>0\}}\right) \, dx, \quad \quad γ\in (0,2).$$ These estimates remain uniform as the parameter $γ\to 2$. As a consequence we establish the uniform convergence of the corresponding free boundaries to a minimal surface as $γ\to 2$. The results are based on the $Γ$-convergence of these energies (properly rescaled) to the Dirichlet-perimeter functional $$\int_Ω|\nabla u|^2 dx + Per_Ω(\{ u=0\}),$$ considered by Athanasopoulous, Caffarelli, Kenig, and Salsa.

On divergent fractional Laplace equations

We consider the divergent fractional Laplace operator presented in [Dipierro-Savin-Valdinoci, Rev. Mat. Iberoam.] and we prove three types of results. Firstly, we show that any given function can be locally shadowed by a solution of a divergent fractional Laplace equation which is also prescribed in a neighborhood of infinity. Secondly, we take into account the Dirichlet problem for the divergent fractional Laplace equation, proving the existence of a solution and characterizing its multiplicity. Finally, we take into account the case of nonlinear equations, obtaining a new approximation results. These results maintain their interest also in the case of functions for which the fractional Laplacian can be defined in the usual sense.

On the fine regularity of the singular set in the nonlinear obstacle problem

We revisit and sharpen the results from our previous work, where we investigated the regularity of the singular set of the free boundary in the nonlinear obstacle problem. As in the work of Figalli-Serra on the classical obstacle problem, we show that each stratum can be further decomposed into a `good' part and an `anomalous' part, where the former is covered by $C^{1,1-}$ manifolds, and the latter is of lower dimension.

Nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane are generically sticky

We prove that nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane exhibit generically stickiness effects and boundary discontinuities. More precisely, we show that if a nonlocal minimal graph in a slab is continuous up to the boundary, then arbitrarily small perturbations of the far-away data produce boundary discontinuities. Hence, either a nonlocal minimal graph is discontinuous at the boundary, or a small perturbation of the prescribed conditions produces boundary discontinuities. The proof relies on a sliding method combined with a fine boundary regularity analysis, based on a discontinuity/smoothness alternative. Namely, we establish that nonlocal minimal graphs are either discontinuous at the boundary or their derivative is Hölder continuous up to the boundary. In this spirit, we prove that the boundary regularity of nonlocal minimal graphs in the plane "jumps" from discontinuous to $C^{1,γ}$, with no intermediate possibilities allowed. In particular, we deduce that the nonlocal curvature equation is always satisfied up to the boundary. As an interesting byproduct of our analysis, one obtains a detailed understanding of the "switch" between the regime of continuous (and hence differentiable) nonlocal minimal graphs to that of discontinuous (and hence with differentiable inverse) ones.

Regularity of the singular set in the fully nonlinear obstacle problem

For the obstacle problem involving a convex fully nonlinear elliptic operator, we show that the singular set in the free boundary stratifies. The top stratum is locally covered by a $C^{1,α}$-manifold, and the lower strata are covered by $C^{1,\log^\varepsilon}$-manifolds. This essentially recovers the regularity result obtained by Figalli-Serra when the operator is the Laplacian.

Boundary behavior of nonlocal minimal surfaces

We consider the behavior of the nonlocal minimal surfaces in the vicinity of the boundary. By a series of detailed examples, we show that nonlocal minimal surfaces may stick at the boundary of the domain, even when the domain is smooth and convex. This is a purely nonlocal phenomenon, and it is in sharp contrast with the boundary properties of the classical minimal surfaces. In particular, we show stickiness phenomena to half-balls when the datum outside the ball is a small half-ring and to the side of a two-dimensional box when the oscillation between the datum on the right and on the left is large enough. When the fractional parameter is small, the sticking effects may become more and more evident. Moreover, we show that lines in the plane are unstable at the boundary: namely, small compactly supported perturbations of lines cause the minimizers in a slab to stick at the boundary, by a quantity that is proportional to a power of the perturbation. In all the examples, we present concrete estimates on the stickiness phenomena. Also, we construct a family of compactly supported barriers which can have independent interest.

Definition of fractional Laplacian for functions with polynomial growth\tha

We introduce a notion of fractional Laplacian for functions which grow more than linearly at infinity. In such case, the operator is not defined in the classical sense: nevertheless, we can give an ad-hoc definition which can be useful for applications in various fields, such as blowup and free boundary problems. In this setting, when the solution has a polynomial growth at infinity, the right hand side of the equation is not just a function, but an equivalence class of functions modulo polynomials of a fixed order. We also give a sharp version of the Schauder estimates in this framework, in which the full smooth Hölder norm of the solution is controlled in terms of the seminorm of the nonlinearity. Though the method presented is very general and potentially works for general nonlocal operators, for clarity and concreteness we focus here on the case of the fractional Laplacian.

Schauder estimates for degenerate Monge-Ampère equations and smoothness of the eigenfunctions

We obtain $C^{2,β}$ estimates up to the boundary for solutions to degenerate Monge-Ampère equations of the type $$ \det D^2 u = f~~\text{in}~Ω, \quad \quad ~f\sim \text{dist}^α(\cdot, \partialΩ)~\text{near}~\partialΩ,~α>0. $$ As a consequence we obtain global $C^\infty$ estimates up to the boundary for the eigenfunctions of the Monge-Ampère operator $(\det D^2 u)^{1/n}$ on smooth, bounded, uniformly convex domains in $R^n$.

A nonlocal free boundary problem

Given~$s,σ\in(0,1)$ and a bounded domain~$Ω\subset\R^n$, we consider the following minimization problem of $s$-Dirichlet plus $σ$-perimeter type $$ [u]_{ H^s(\R^{2n}\setminus(Ω^c)^2) } + \Per_σ\left(\{u>0\},Ω\right), $$ where~$[ \cdot]_{H^s}$ is the fractional Gagliardo seminorm and $\Per_σ$ is the fractional perimeter. Among other results, we prove a monotonicity formula for the minimizers, glueing lemmata, uniform energy bounds, convergence results, a regularity theory for the planar cones and a trivialization result for the flat case. Several classical free boundary problems are limit cases of the one that we consider in this paper, as $s\nearrow1$, $σ\nearrow1$ or~$σ\searrow0$.

A localization theorem and boundary regularity for a class of degenerate Monge Ampere equations

We consider degenerate Monge-Ampere equations of the type $$\det D^2 u= f \quad \{in $\Om$}, \quad \quad f \sim \, d_{\p \Om}^α\quad \{near $\p \Om$,}$$ where $d_{\p \Om}$ represents the distance to the boundary of the domain $\Om$ and $α>0$ is a positive power. We obtain $C^2$ estimates at the boundary under natural conditions on the boundary data and the right hand side. Similar estimates in two dimensions were obtained by J.X. Hong, G. Huang and W. Wang.

Minimization of a fractional perimeter-Dirichlet integral functional

We consider a minimization problem that combines the Dirichlet energy with the nonlocal perimeter of a level set, namely $$ \int_\Om |\nabla u(x)|^2\,dx+\Per\Big(\{u > 0\},\Om \Big),$$ with $σ\in(0,1)$. We obtain regularity results for the minimizers and for their free boundaries $\p \{u>0\}$ using blow-up analysis. We will also give related results about density estimates, monotonicity formulas, Euler-Lagrange equations and extension problems.

On boundary Hölder gradient estimates for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations

In this paper, we establish boundary Hölder gradient estimates for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations with $L^{p}$ ($n<p\leq\infty$) right hand side and $C^{1,γ}$ boundary values under natural assumptions on the domain, boundary data and the Monge-Ampère measure. These estimates extend our previous boundary regularity results for solutions to the linearized Monge-Ampère equations with bounded right hand side and $C^{1, 1}$ boundary data.

Regularity of Lipschitz free boundaries for the thin one-phase problem

We study regularity properties of the free boundary for the thin one-phase problem which consists of minimizing the energy functional $$\label{E} E(u,Ω) = \int_Ω|\nabla u|^2 dX + \mathcal{H}^n(\{u>0\} \cap \{x_{n+1} = 0\}), \quad Ω\subset \R^{n+1},$$ among all functions $u\ge 0$ which are fixed on $\p Ω$. We prove that the free boundary $F(u)=\p_{\R^n}\{u>0\}$ of a minimizer $u$ has locally finite $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$ measure and is a $C^{2,α}$ surface except on a small singular set of Hausdorff dimension $n-3$. We also obtain $C^{2,α}$ regularity of Lipschitz free boundaries of viscosity solutions associated to this problem.

$Γ$-convergence for nonlocal phase transitions

We discuss the $Γ$-convergence, under the appropriate scaling, of the energy functional $$ \|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)dx,$$ with $s \in (0,1)$, where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. When $s\in [1/2,\,1)$, we show that the energy $Γ$-converges to the classical minimal surface functional -- while, when $s\in(0,\,1/2)$, it is easy to see that the functional $Γ$-converges to the nonlocal minimal surface functional.

Density estimates for a nonlocal variational model via the Sobolev inequality

We consider the minimizers of the energy $$ \|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)\,dx,$$ with $s \in (0,1/2)$, where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. By using a fractional Sobolev inequality, we give a new proof of the fact that the sublevel sets of a minimizer $u$ in a large ball $B_R$ occupy a volume comparable with the volume of $B_R$.

preprint2011arXiv

Density estimates for a variational model driven by the Gagliardo norm

We prove density estimates for level sets of minimizers of the energy $$\eps^{2s}\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)\,dx,$$ with $s \in (0,1)$, where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. As a consequence we obtain, as $\eps \to 0$, the uniform convergence of the level sets of $u$ to either a $H^s$-nonlocal minimal surface if $s\in(0,\frac 1 2)$, or to a classical minimal surface if $s \in[\frac 1 2,1)$.

preprint2011arXiv

Local and global minimizers for a variational energy involving a fractional norm

We study existence, unicity and other geometric properties of the minimizers of the energy functional $$ \|u\|^2_{H^s(Ω)}+\int_ΩW(u)\,dx, $$ where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$ and $W$ is a double-well potential. We also deal with the solutions of the related fractional elliptic Allen-Cahn equation on the entire space $\mathbb{R}^n$. The results collected here will also be useful for forthcoming papers, where the second and the third author will study the $Γ$-convergence and the density estimates for level sets of minimizers.
