Learning Green's functions associated with time-dependent partial differential equations

Neural operators are a popular technique in scientific machine learning to learn a mathematical model of the behavior of unknown physical systems from data. Neural operators are especially useful to learn solution operators associated with partial differential equations (PDEs) from pairs of forcing functions and solutions when numerical solvers are not available or the underlying physics is poorly understood. In this work, we attempt to provide theoretical foundations to understand the amount of training data needed to learn time-dependent PDEs. Given input-output pairs from a parabolic PDE in any spatial dimension $n\geq 1$, we derive the first theoretically rigorous scheme for learning the associated solution operator, which takes the form of a convolution with a Green's function $G$. Until now, rigorously learning Green's functions associated with time-dependent PDEs has been a major challenge in the field of scientific machine learning because $G$ may not be square-integrable when $n>1$, and time-dependent PDEs have transient dynamics. By combining the hierarchical low-rank structure of $G$ together with randomized numerical linear algebra, we construct an approximant to $G$ that achieves a relative error of $\smash{\mathcal{O}(Γ_ε^{-1/2}ε)}$ in the $L^1$-norm with high probability by using at most $\smash{\mathcal{O}(ε^{-\frac{n+2}{2}}\log(1/ε))}$ input-output training pairs, where $Γ_ε$ is a measure of the quality of the training dataset for learning $G$, and $ε>0$ is sufficiently small.

Green's function for second order parabolic equations with singular lower order coefficients

We construct Green's functions for second order parabolic operators of the form $Pu=\partial_t u-{\rm div}({\bf A} \nabla u+ \boldsymbol{b}u)+ \boldsymbol{c} \cdot \nabla u+du$ in $(-\infty, \infty) \times Ω$, where $Ω$ is an open connected set in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It is not necessary that $Ω$ to be bounded and $Ω= \mathbb{R}^n$ is not excluded. We assume that the leading coefficients $\bf A$ are bounded and measurable and the lower order coefficients $\boldsymbol{b}$, $\boldsymbol{c}$, and $d$ belong to critical mixed norm Lebesgue spaces and satisfy the conditions $d-{\rm div} \boldsymbol{b} \ge 0$ and ${\rm div}(\boldsymbol{b}-\boldsymbol{c}) \ge 0$. We show that the Green's function has the Gaussian bound in the entire $(-\infty, \infty) \times Ω$.

On $C^{1/2,1}$, $C^{1,2}$, and $C^{0,0}$ estimates for linear parabolic operators

We show that weak solutions to parabolic equations in divergence form with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions are continuously differentiable up to the boundary when the leading coefficients have Dini mean oscillation and the lower order coefficients verify certain conditions. Similar results are obtained for non-divergence form parabolic operators and their adjoint operators. Under similar conditions, we also establish a Harnack inequality for nonnegative adjoint solutions, together with upper and lower Gaussian bounds for the global fundamental solution.

Regularity of a degenerate parabolic equation appearing in Vecer's unified pricing of Asian options

Vecer derived a degenerate parabolic equation with a boundary condition characterizing the price of Asian options with generally sampled average. It is well understood that there exists a unique probabilistic solution to such a problem but it remained unclear whether the probabilistic solution is a classical solution. We prove that the probabilistic solutions to Vecer's PDE are regular.

Elliptic systems with measurable coefficients of the type of Lamé system in three dimensions

We study the $3 \times 3$ elliptic systems $\nabla \times (a(x) \nabla\times u)-\nabla (b(x) \nabla \cdot u)=f$, where the coefficients $a(x)$ and $b(x)$ are positive scalar functions that are measurable and bounded away from zero and infinity. We prove that weak solutions of the above system are Hölder continuous under some minimal conditions on the inhomogeneous term $f$. We also present some applications and discuss several related topics including estimates of the Green's functions and the heat kernels of the above systems.

Green's functions for elliptic and parabolic systems with Robin-type boundary conditions

The aim of this paper is to investigate Green's function for parabolic and elliptic systems satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition. We construct Green's function for parabolic systems with time-dependent coefficients satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition assuming that weak solutions of the system are locally Hölder continuous in the interior of the domain, and as a corollary we construct Green's function for elliptic system with a Robin-type condition. Also, we obtain Gaussian bound for Robin Green's function under an additional assumption that weak solutions of Robin problem are locally bounded up to the boundary. We provide some examples satisfying such a local boundedness property, and thus have Gaussian bounds for their Green's functions.

Heat kernel for the elliptic system of linear elasticity with boundary conditions

We consider the elliptic system of linear elasticity with bounded measurable coefficients in a domain where the second Korn inequality holds. We construct heat kernel of the system subject to Dirichlet, Neumann, or mixed boundary condition under the assumption that weak solutions of the elliptic system are Hölder continuous in the interior. Moreover, we show that if weak solutions of the mixed problem are Hölder continuous up to the boundary, then the corresponding heat kernel has a Gaussian bound. In particular, if the domain is a two dimensional Lipschitz domain satisfying a corkscrew or non-tangential accessibility condition on the set where we specify Dirichlet boundary condition, then we show that the heat kernel has a Gaussian bound. As an application, we construct Green's function for elliptic mixed problem in such a domain.

Harnack inequality for nondivergent parabolic operators on Riemannian manifolds

We consider second-order linear parabolic operators in non-divergence form that are intrinsically defined on Riemannian manifolds. In the elliptic case, Cabré proved a global Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality under the assumption that the sectional curvature of the underlying manifold is nonnegative. Later, Kim improved Cabré's result by replacing the curvature condition by a certain condition on the distance function. Assuming essentially the same condition introduced by Kim, we establish Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality for nonnegative solutions of the non-divergent parabolic equation. This, in particular, gives a new proof for Li-Yau Harnack inequality for positive solutions to the heat equation in a manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature.

Neumann functions for second order elliptic systems with measurable coefficients

We study Neumann functions for divergence form, second order elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients in a bounded Lipschitz domain or a Lipschitz graph domain. We establish existence, uniqueness, and various estimates for the Neumann functions under the assumption that weak solutions of the system enjoy interior Hölder continuity. Also, we establish global pointwise bounds for the Neumann functions under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy a certain natural local boundedness estimate. Moreover, we prove that such a local boundedness estimate for weak solutions of the system is in fact equivalent to the global pointwise bound for the Neumann function. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and the vectorial cases.

Sharp estimates for the Neumann functions and applications to quantitative photo-acoustic imaging in inhomogeneous media

We obtain sharp $L^p$ and Hölder estimates for the Neumann function of the operator $\nabla \cdot γ\nabla - ik$ on a bounded domain. We also obtain quantitative description of its singularity. We then apply these estimates to quantitative photo-acoustic imaging in inhomogeneous media. The problem is to reconstruct the optical absorption coefficient of a diametrically small anomaly from the absorbed energy density.

Global estimates for Green's matrix of second order parabolic systems with application to elliptic systems in two dimensional domains

We establish global Gaussian estimates for the Green's matrix of divergence form, second order parabolic systems in a cylindrical domain under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate and a local Hölder estimate. From these estimates, we also derive global estimates for the Green's matrix for elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients in two dimensional domains. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and vectorial cases and discuss several applications of our result.

Global pointwise estimates for Green's matrix of second order elliptic systems

We establish global pointwise bounds for the Green's matrix for divergence form, second order elliptic systems in a domain under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate. Moreover, we prove that such a local boundedness estimate for weak solutions of the system is equivalent to the usual global pointwise bound for the Green's matrix. In the scalar case, such an estimate is a consequence of De Giorgi-Moser-Nash theory and holds for equations with bounded measurable coefficients in arbitrary domains. In the vectorial case, one need to impose certain assumptions on the coefficients of the system as well as on domains to obtain such an estimate. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and vectorial cases and discuss several applications of our result.

Green's functions for parabolic systems of second order in time-varying domains

We construct Green's functions for divergence form, second order parabolic systems in non-smooth time-varying domains whose boundaries are locally represented as graph of functions that are Lipschitz continuous in the spatial variables and 1/2-Hölder continuous in the time variable, under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy an interior Hölder continuity estimate. We also derive global pointwise estimates for Green's function in such time-varying domains under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate and a local Hölder continuity estimate. In particular, our results apply to complex perturbations of a single real equation.
