Gradient estimates for the $p$-Laplacian perfect conductivity problem with partially flat and $C^{1,γ}$ inclusions

In this paper, we investigate the gradient estimates for solutions to the perfect conductivity problem with two closely spaced perfect conductors embedded in a homogeneous matrix, modeled by $p$-Laplacian elliptic equations. We first prove that the gradient of the solution remains bounded when the conductors possess partially ``flat" boundaries. This contrasts with the case involving strictly convex inclusions, where the gradient can blow up. Second, for conductors with $C^{1,γ}$ boundaries ($γ\in(0,1)$), we establish both upper and lower bounds on the gradient, with optimal blow-up rates. Furthermore, we provide precise asymptotic expansions in some special cases.

Remarks on the convex integration technique applied to singular stochastic partial differential equations

Singular stochastic partial differential equations informally refer to the partial differential equations with rough random force that leads to the products in the nonlinear terms becoming ill-defined. Besides the theories of regularity structures and paracontrolled distributions, the technique of convex integration has emerged as a possible approach to construct a solution to such singular stochastic partial differential equations. We review recent developments in this area, and also demonstrate that an application of the convex integration technique to prove non-uniqueness seems unlikely for a particular singular stochastic partial differential equation, specifically the $Φ^{4}$ model from quantum field theory.

$L_p$-estimates for nonlocal equations with general Lévy measures

We consider nonlocal operators of the form \begin{equation*} L_t u(x) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^d} \left( u(x+y)-u(x)-\nabla u(x)\cdot y^{(σ)} \right) ν_t(dy), \end{equation*} where $ν_t$ is a general Lévy measure of order $σ\in(0,2)$. We allow this class of Lévy measures to be very singular and impose no regularity assumptions in the time variable. Continuity of the operators and the unique strong solvability of the corresponding nonlocal parabolic equations in $L_p$ spaces are established. We also demonstrate that, depending on the ranges of $σ$ and $d$, the operator can or cannot be treated in weighted mixed-norm spaces.

Boundary Lebesgue mixed-norm estimates for non-stationary Stokes systems with VMO coefficients

We consider Stokes systems with measurable coefficients and Lions-type boundary conditions. We show that, in contrast to the Dirichlet boundary conditions, local boundary mixed-norm $L_{s,q}$-estimates hold for the spatial second-order derivatives of solutions, assuming the smallness of the mean oscillations of the coefficients with respect to the spatial variables in small cylinders. In the un-mixed norm case with $s=q=2$, the result is still new and provides local boundary Caccioppoli-type estimates. The main challenges in the work arise from the lack of regularity of the pressure and time derivatives of the solutions and from interaction of the boundary with the nonlocal structure of the system. To overcome these difficulties, our approach relies heavily on several newly developed regularity estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form parabolic equations with coefficients that are only measurable in the time variable and in one of the spatial variables.

Global $L_p$ estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations in divergence form

We present a priori estimates and unique solvability results in the mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck (KFP) equation in divergence form. The leading coefficients are bounded uniformly nondegenerate with respect to the velocity variable $v$ and satisfy a vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) type condition. We consider the $L_2$ case separately and treat more general equations which include the relativistic KFP equation.

Global $L_p$ estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations in nondivergence form

We study the degenerate Kolmogorov equations (also known as kinetic Fokker-Planck equations) in nondivergence form. The leading coefficients $a^{ij}$ are merely measurable in $t$ and satisfy the vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) condition in $x, v$ with respect to some quasi-metric. We also assume boundedness and uniform nondegeneracy of $a^{ij}$ with respect to $v$. We prove global a priori estimates in weighted mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces and solvability results. We also show an application of the main result to the Landau equation. Our proof does not rely on any kernel estimates.

Global Schauder estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations

We present global Schauder type estimates in all variables and unique solvability results in kinetic Hölder spaces for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck (KFP) equations. The leading coefficients are Hölder continuous in the $x, v$ variables and are merely measurable in the temporal variable. Our proof is inspired by Campanato's approach to Schauder estimates and does not rely on the estimates of the fundamental solution of the KFP operator.

Gradient estimates for the insulated conductivity problem: the non-umbilical case

We study the insulated conductivity problem with inclusions embedded in a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^n$, for $n \ge 3$. The gradient of solutions may blow up as $\varepsilon$, the distance between inclusions, approaches to $0$. We established in a recent paper optimal gradient estimates for a class of inclusions including balls. In this paper, we prove such gradient estimates for general strictly convex inclusions. Unlike the perfect conductivity problem, the estimates depend on the principal curvatures of the inclusions, and we show that these estimates are characterized by the first non-zero eigenvalue of a divergence form elliptic operator on $\mathbb S^{n-2}$.

Optimal gradient estimates of solutions to the insulated conductivity problem in dimension greater than two

We study the insulated conductivity problem with inclusions embedded in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The gradient of solutions may blow up as $\varepsilon$, the distance between inclusions, approaches to $0$. It was known that the optimal blow up rate in dimension $n = 2$ is of order $\varepsilon^{-1/2}$. It has recently been proved that in dimensions $n \ge 3$, an upper bound of the gradient is of order $\varepsilon^{-1/2 + β}$ for some $β> 0$. On the other hand, optimal values of $β$ have not been identified. In this paper, we prove that when the inclusions are balls, the optimal value of $β$ is $[-(n-1)+\sqrt{(n-1)^2+4(n-2)}~]/4 \in (0,1/2)$ in dimensions $n \ge 3$.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Landau System with the Specular-Reflection Boundary Condition

We consider the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system, a classical model for a dilute collisional plasma interacting through Coulombic collisions and with its self-consistent electrostatic field. We establish global stability and well-posedness near the Maxwellian equilibrium state with decay in time and some regularity results for small initial perturbations, in any general bounded domain (including a torus as in a tokamak device), in the presence of specular reflection boundary condition. We provide a new improved $L^{2}\rightarrow L^{\infty }$ framework: $L^{2}$ energy estimate combines only with $S^{p}$ estimate for the ultra-parabolic equation.

Time analyticity for nonlocal parabolic equations

In this paper, we investigate pointwise time analyticity of solutions to fractional heat equations in the settings of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and a complete Riemannian manifold $\mathrm{M}$. On one hand, in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that any solution $u=u(t,x)$ to $u_t(t,x)-\mathrm{L}_α^κ u(t,x)=0$, where $\mathrm{L}_α^κ$ is a nonlocal operator of order $α$, is time analytic in $(0,1]$ if $u$ satisfies the growth condition $|u(t,x)|\leq C(1+|x|)^{α-ε}$ for any $(t,x)\in (0,1]\times \mathbb{R}^d$ and $ε\in(0,α)$. We also obtain pointwise estimates for $\partial_t^kp_α(t,x;y)$, where $p_α(t,x;y)$ is the fractional heat kernel. Furthermore, under the same growth condition, we show that the mild solution is the unique solution. On the other hand, in a manifold $\mathrm{M}$, we also prove the time analyticity of the mild solution under the same growth condition and the time analyticity of the fractional heat kernel, when $\mathrm{M}$ satisfies the Poincaré inequality and the volume doubling condition. Moreover, we also study the time and space derivatives of the fractional heat kernel in $\mathbb{R}^d$ using the method of Fourier transform and contour integrals. We find that when $α\in (0,1]$, the fractional heat kernel is time analytic at $t=0$ when $x\neq 0$, which differs from the standard heat kernel. As corollaries, we obtain sharp solvability condition for the backward fractional heat equation and time analyticity of some nonlinear fractional heat equations with power nonlinearity of order $p$. These results are related to those in [8] and [11] which deal with local equations.

Weighted mixed-norm $L_p$ estimates for equations in non-divergence form with singular coefficients: the Dirichlet problem

We study a class of non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations with singular first-order coefficients in an upper half space with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. In the simplest setting, the operators in the equations under consideration appear in the study of fractional heat and fractional Laplace equations. Intrinsic weighted Sobolev spaces are found in which the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are proved under certain smallness conditions on the weighted mean oscillations of the coefficients in small parabolic cylinders. Our results are new even when the coefficients are constants and they cover the case where the weights may not be in the $A_p$-Muckenhoupt class.

Global well-posedness for the one-phase Muskat problem

The free boundary problem for a two-dimensional fluid filtered in porous media is studied. This is known as the one-phase Muskat problem and is mathematically equivalent to the vertical Hele-Shaw problem driven by gravity force. We prove that if the initial free boundary is the graph of a periodic Lipschitz function, then there exists a global-in-time Lipschitz solution in the strong $L^\infty_t L^2_x$ sense and it is the unique viscosity solution. The proof requires quantitative estimates for layer potentials and pointwise elliptic regularity in Lipschitz domains. This is the first construction of unique global strong solutions for the Muskat problem with initial data of arbitrary size.

Gradient estimates for singular $p$-Laplace type equations with measure data

We are concerned with interior and global gradient estimates for solutions to a class of singular quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data, whose prototype is given by the $p$-Laplace equation $-Δ_p u=μ$ with $p\in (1,2)$. The cases when $p\in \big(2-\frac 1 n,2\big)$ and $p\in \big(\frac{3n-2}{2n-1},2-\frac{1}{n}\big]$ were studied in [9] and [22], respectively. In this paper, we improve the results in [22] and address the open case when $p\in \big(1,\frac{3n-2}{2n-1}\big]$. Interior and global modulus of continuity estimates of the gradients of solutions are also established.

Time fractional parabolic equations with measurable coefficients and embeddings for fractional parabolic Sobolev spaces

We consider time fractional parabolic equations in both divergence and non-divergence form when the leading coefficients $a^{ij}$ are measurable functions of $(t,x_1)$ except for $a^{11}$ which is a measurable function of either $t$ or $x_1$. We obtain the solvability in Sobolev spaces of the equations in the whole space, on a half space, or on a partially bounded domain. The proofs use a level set argument, a scaling argument, and embeddings in fractional parabolic Sobolev spaces for which we give a direct and elementary proof.

A simple proof of regularity for $C^{1,α}$ interface transmission problems

We give a simple proof of a recent result in [1] by Caffarelli, Soria-Carro, and Stinga about the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of weak solutions to transmission problems with $C^{1,α}$ interfaces. Our proof does not use the mean value property or the maximum principle, and also works for more general elliptic systems. Some extensions to $C^{1,\text{Dini}}$ interfaces and to domains with multiple sub-domains are also discussed.

An approach for weighted mixed-norm estimates for parabolic equations with local and non-local time derivatives

We give a unified approach to weighted mixed-norm estimates and solvability for both the usual and time fractional parabolic equations in nondivergence form when coefficients are merely measurable in the time variable. In the spatial variables, the leading coefficients locally have small mean oscillations. Our results extend the previous result in [6] for unmixed $L_p$-estimates without weights.

Gradient estimates for divergence form parabolic systems

We consider divergence form, second-order strongly parabolic systems in a cylindrical domain with a finite number of subdomains under the assumption that the interfacial boundaries are $C^{1,\text{Dini}}$ and $C^{γ_{0}}$ in the spatial variables and the time variable, respectively. Gradient estimates and piecewise $C^{1/2,1}$-regularity are established when the leading coefficients and data are assumed to be of piecewise Dini mean oscillation or piecewise Hölder continuous. Our results improve the previous results in \cite{ll,fknn} to a large extent. We also prove a global weak type-$(1,1)$ estimate with respect to $A_{1}$ Muckenhoupt weights for the parabolic systems with leading coefficients which satisfy a stronger assumption. As a byproduct, we give a proof of optimal regularity of weak solutions to parabolic transmission problems with $C^{1,μ}$ or $C^{1,\text{Dini}}$ interfaces. This gives an extension of a recent result in \cite{css} to parabolic systems.

On $C^{1/2,1}$, $C^{1,2}$, and $C^{0,0}$ estimates for linear parabolic operators

We show that weak solutions to parabolic equations in divergence form with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions are continuously differentiable up to the boundary when the leading coefficients have Dini mean oscillation and the lower order coefficients verify certain conditions. Similar results are obtained for non-divergence form parabolic operators and their adjoint operators. Under similar conditions, we also establish a Harnack inequality for nonnegative adjoint solutions, together with upper and lower Gaussian bounds for the global fundamental solution.

On parabolic and elliptic equations with singular or degenerate coefficients

We study both divergence and non-divergence form parabolic and elliptic equations in the half space $\{x_d>0\}$ whose coefficients are the product of $x_d^α$ and uniformly nondegenerate bounded measurable matrix-valued functions, where $α\in (-1, \infty)$. As such, the coefficients are singular or degenerate near the boundary of the half space. For equations with the conormal or Neumann boundary condition, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions in weighted Sobolev spaces and mixed-norm weighted Sobolev spaces when the coefficients are only measurable in the $x_d$ direction and have small mean oscillation in the other directions in small cylinders. Our results are new even in the special case when the coefficients are constants, and they are reduced to the classical results when $α=0$

Parabolic and elliptic equations with singular or degenerate coefficients: the Dirichlet problem

We consider the Dirichlet problem for a class of elliptic and parabolic equations in the upper-half space $\mathbb{R}^d_+$, where the coefficients are the product of $x_d^α, α\in (-\infty, 1),$ and a bounded uniformly elliptic matrix of coefficients. Thus, the coefficients are singular or degenerate near the boundary $\{x_d =0\}$ and they may not locally integrable. The novelty of the work is that we find proper weights under which the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions in Sobolev spaces are established. These results appear to be the first of their kind and are new even if the coefficients are constant. They are also readily extended to systems of equations.

Recent progress in the $L_p$ theory for elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients

In this paper, we review some results over the last 10-15 years on elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. We begin with an approach given by N. V. Krylov to parabolic equations in the whole space with VMO$_x$ coefficients. We then discuss some subsequent development including elliptic and parabolic equations with coefficients which are allowed to be merely measurable in one or two space directions, weighted $L_p$ estimates with Muckenhoupt ($A_p$) weights, non-local elliptic and parabolic equations, as well as fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations.

The conormal and Robin boundary value problems in nonsmooth domains satisfying a measure condition

We consider elliptic equations and systems in divergence form with the conormal or the Robin boundary conditions, with small BMO (bounded mean oscillation) or variably partially small BMO coefficients. We propose a new class of domains which are locally close to a half space (or convex domains) with respect to the Lebesgue measure in the system (or scalar, respectively) case, and obtain the $W^1_p$ estimate for the conormal problem with the homogeneous boundary condition. Such condition is weaker than the Reifenberg flatness condition, for which the closeness is measured in terms of the Hausdorff distance, and the semi-convexity condition. For the conormal problem with inhomogeneous boundary conditions, we also assume that the domain is Lipschitz. By using these results, we obtain the $W^1_p$ and weighted $W^1_p$ estimates for the Robin problem in these domains.

The Dirichlet-conormal problem with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions

We consider the mixed Dirichlet-conormal problem on irregular domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Two types of regularity results will be discussed: the $W^{1,p}$ regularity and a non-tangential maximal function estimate. The domain is assumed to be Reifenberg-flat, and the interfacial boundary is either Reifenberg-flat of co-dimension $2$ or is locally sufficiently close to a Lipschitz function of $m$ variables, where $m=1,\ldots,d-2$. For the non-tangential maximal function estimate, we also require the domain to be Lipschitz.

Time analyticity for inhomogeneous parabolic equations and the Navier-Stokes equations in the half space

We prove the time analyticity for weak solutions of inhomogeneous parabolic equations with measurable coefficients in the half space with either the Dirichlet boundary condition or the conormal boundary condition under the assumption that the solution and the source term have the exponential growth of order $2$ with respect to the space variables. We also obtain the time analyticity for bounded mild solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half space with the Dirichlet boundary condition. Our work is an extension of the recent work by Zhang [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 148 (2020)] and Dong-Zhang [J. Funct. Anal. (2020)], where the authors proved the time analyticity of solutions to the homogeneous heat equation and the Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space.

preprint2020arXiv

Time analyticity for the heat equation and Navier-Stokes equations

We prove the analyticity in time for solutions of two parabolic equations in the whole space, without any decaying or vanishing conditions. One of them involves solutions to the heat equation of exponential growth of order $2$ on $\M$. Here $\M$ is $\R^d$ or a complete noncompact manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below by a constant. An implication is a sharp solvability condition for the Cauchy problem of the backward heat equation, which is a well known ill-posed problem. Another implication is a sharp criteria for time analyticity of solutions down to the initial time. The other pertains bounded mild solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. There are many long established analyticity results for the Navier-Stokes equations. See for example \cite{Ka:1} and \cite{FT:1} for spatial and time analyticity in certain integral sense, \cite{CN:1} for pointwise space-time analyticity of 3 dimensional solutions to the Cauchy problem, and also the pointwise time analyticity results of \cite{Ma:1} and \cite{Gi:1} under zero boundary condition. Our result seems to be the first general pointwise time analyticity result for the Cauchy problem for all dimensions, whose proof involves only real variable method. The proof involves a method of algebraically manipulating the integral kernel, which appears applicable to other evolution equations.

Optimal estimates for the conductivity problem by Green's function method

We study a class of second-order elliptic equations of divergence form, with discontinuous coefficients and data, which models the conductivity problem in composite materials. We establish optimal gradient estimates by showing the explicit dependence of the elliptic coefficients and the distance between interfacial boundaries of inclusions. The novelty of these estimates is that they unify the known results in the literature and answer open problem (b) proposed by Li-Vogelius (2000) for the isotropic conductivity problem. We also obtain more interesting higher-order derivative estimates, which answers open problem (c) of Li-Vogelius (2000). It is worth pointing out that the equations under consideration in this paper are nonhomogeneous.

On an elliptic equation arising from composite materials

In this paper, we derive an interior Schauder estimate for the divergence form elliptic equation \begin{equation*} D_i(a(x)D_iu)=D_if_i \end{equation*} in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $a(x)$ and $f_i(x)$ are piecewise Hölder continuous in a domain containing two touching balls as subdomains. When $f_i\equiv 0$ and $a$ is piecewise constant, we prove that $u$ is piecewise smooth with bounded derivatives. This completely answers a question raised by Li and Vogelius [7] in dimension 2.

Regularity of a degenerate parabolic equation appearing in Vecer's unified pricing of Asian options

Vecer derived a degenerate parabolic equation with a boundary condition characterizing the price of Asian options with generally sampled average. It is well understood that there exists a unique probabilistic solution to such a problem but it remained unclear whether the probabilistic solution is a classical solution. We prove that the probabilistic solutions to Vecer's PDE are regular.

Conormal problem of higher-order parabolic systems

The paper is a comprehensive study of the $L_p$ and the Schauder estimates for higher-order divergence type parabolic systems with discontinuous coefficients in the half space and cylindrical domains with conormal derivative boundary condition. For the $L_p$ estimates, we assume that the leading coefficients are only bounded measurable in the $t$ variable and $VMO$ with respect to $x$. We also prove the Schauder estimates in two situations: the coefficients are Hölder continuous only in the $x$ variable; the coefficients are Hölder continuous in both variables.

Elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients in weighted Sobolev spaces

We consider both divergence and non-divergence parabolic equations on a half space in weighted Sobolev spaces. All the leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in the time and one spatial variable except one coefficient, which is assumed to be only measurable either in the time or the spatial variable. As functions of the other variables the coefficients have small bounded mean oscillation (BMO) semi-norms. The lower-order coefficients are allowed to blow up near the boundary with a certain optimal growth condition. As a corollary, we also obtain the corresponding results for elliptic equations.

On a multi-dimensional transport equation with nonlocal velocity

We study a multi-dimensional nonlocal active scalar equation of the form $u_t+v\cdot \nabla u=0$ in $\mathbb R^+\times \mathbb R^d$, where $v=Λ^{-2+α}\nabla u$ with $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$. We show that when $α\in (0,2]$ certain radial solutions develop gradient blowup in finite time. In the case when $α=0$, the equations are globally well-posed with arbitrary initial data in suitable Sobolev spaces.

On the impossibility of $W_p^2$ estimates for elliptic equations with piecewise constant coefficients

In this paper, we present counterexamples showing that for any $p\in (1,\infty)$, $p\neq 2$, there is a non-divergence form uniformly elliptic operator with piecewise constant coefficients in $\mathbb{R}^2$ (constant on each quadrant in $\mathbb{R}^2$) for which there is no $W^2_p$ estimate. The corresponding examples in the divergence case are also discussed. One implication of these examples is that the ranges of $p$ are sharp in the recent results obtained in [4,5] for non-divergence type elliptic and parabolic equations in a half space with the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition when the coefficients do not have any regularity in a tangential direction.

Parabolic equations in simple convex polytopes with time irregular coefficients

We prove the $W^{1,2}_p$-estimate and solvability for the Dirichlet problem of second-order parabolic equations in simple convex polytopes with time irregular coefficients, when $p\in (1,2]$. We also consider the corresponding Neumann problem in a half space when $p\in [2,\infty)$. Similar results are obtained for equations in a half space with coefficients which are measurable in a tangential direction and have small mean oscillations in the other directions.

Schauder estimates for a class of non-local elliptic equations

We prove Schauder estimates for a class of non-local elliptic operators with kernel $K(y)=a(y)/|y|^{d+σ}$ and either Dini or Hölder continuous data. Here $0 < σ< 2$ is a constant and $a$ is a bounded measurable function, which is not necessarily to be homogeneous, regular, or symmetric. As an application, we prove that the operators give isomorphisms between the Lipschitz--Zygmund spaces $Λ^{α+σ}$ and $Λ^α$ for any $α>0$. Several local estimates and an extension to operators with kernels $K(x,y)$ are also discussed.

The Schauder estimates for higher-order parabolic systems with time irregular coefficients

We prove Schauder estimates for solutions to both divergence and non-divergence type higher-order parabolic systems in the whole space and the half space. Gradient estimates for parabolic and elliptic systems from linear laminates

We establish several gradient estimates for second-order divergence type parabolic and elliptic systems. The coefficients and data are assumed to be Hölder or Dini continuous in the time variable and all but one spatial variables. This type of systems arises from the problems of linearly elastic laminates and composite materials. For the proof, we use Campanato's approach in a novel way. Non-divergence type equations under a similar condition are also discussed.

On a family of exact solutions to the incompressible liquid crystals in two dimensions

In this paper we construct a family of exact strong solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible liquid crystal equations with finite energy. The initial velocity is chosen to be rotationally symmetric and the image of the initial orientation of the liquid crystal is a non-trivial curve on the unit sphere. It turns out that this family of initial data evolves globally in time by liquid crystal flow and may shrink to a single point as time goes to infinity.

On a generalized maximum principle for a transport-diffusion model with $\log$-modulated fractional dissipation

We consider a transport-diffusion equation of the form $\partial_t θ+v \cdot \nabla θ+ ν\A θ=0$, where $v$ is a given time-dependent vector field on $\mathbb R^d$. The operator $\A$ represents log-modulated fractional dissipation: $\A=\frac {|\nabla|^γ}{\log^β(λ+|\nabla|)}$ and the parameters $ν\ge 0$, $β\ge 0$, $0\le γ\le 2$, $λ>1$. We introduce a novel nonlocal decomposition of the operator $\A$ in terms of a weighted integral of the usual fractional operators $|\nabla|^{s}$, $0\le s \le γ$ plus a smooth remainder term which corresponds to an $L^1$ kernel. For a general vector field $v$ (possibly non-divergence-free) we prove a generalized $L^\infty$ maximum principle of the form $ |θ(t)|_\infty \le e^{Ct} |θ_0|_{\infty}$ where the constant $C=C(ν,β,γ)>0$. In the case $\text{div}(v)=0$ the same inequality holds for $|θ(t)|_p$ with $1\le p \le \infty$. At the cost of an exponential factor, this extends a recent result of Hmidi (2011) to the full regime $d\ge 1$, $0\le γ\le 2$ and removes the incompressibility assumption in the $L^\infty$ case.

On a one-dimensional α-patch model with nonlocal drift and fractional dissipation

We consider a one-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear equation of the form: $\partial_t u = (Λ^{-α} u)\partial_x u - νΛ^βu$ where $Λ=(-\partial_{xx})^{\frac 12}$ is the fractional Laplacian and $ν\ge 0$ is the viscosity coefficient. We consider primarily the regime $0<α<1$ and $0\le β\le 2$ for which the model has nonlocal drift, fractional dissipation, and captures essential features of the 2D $α$-patch models. In the critical and subcritical range $1-α\le β\le 2$, we prove global wellposedness for arbitrarily large initial data in Sobolev spaces. In the full supercritical range $0 \le β<1-α$, we prove formation of singularities in finite time for a class of smooth initial data. Our proof is based on a novel nonlocal weighted inequality which can be of independent interest.

On elliptic equations in a half space or in convex wedges with irregular coefficients

We consider second-order elliptic equations in a half space with leading coefficients measurable in a tangential direction. We prove the $W^2_p$-estimate and solvability for the Dirichlet problem when $p\in (1,2]$, and for the Neumann problem when $p\in [2,\infty)$. We then extend these results to equations with more general coefficients, which are measurable in a tangential direction and have small mean oscillations in the other directions. As an application, we obtain the $W^2_p$-solvability of elliptic equations in convex wedge domains or in convex polygonal domains with discontinuous coefficients.

On the existence of smooth solutions for fully nonlinear parabolic equations with measurable "coefficients" without convexity assumptions

We show that for any uniformly parabolic fully nonlinear second-order equation with bounded measurable "coefficients" and bounded "free" term in any cylindrical smooth domain with smooth boundary data one can find an approximating equation which has a unique continuous solution with the first derivatives bounded and the second spacial derivatives locally bounded. The approximating equation is constructed in such a way that it modifies the original one only for large values of the unknown function and its spacial derivatives.

The conormal derivative problem for higher order elliptic systems with irregular coefficients

We prove $L_p$ estimates of solutions to a conormal derivative problem for divergence form complex-valued higher-order elliptic systems on a half space and on a Reifenberg flat domain. The leading coefficients are assumed to be merely measurable in one direction and have small mean oscillations in the orthogonal directions on each small ball. Our results are new even in the second-order case. The corresponding results for the Dirichlet problem were obtained recently in [15].

Higher order elliptic and parabolic systems with variably partially BMO coefficients in regular and irregular domains

The solvability in Sobolev spaces is proved for divergence form complex-valued higher order parabolic systems in the whole space, on a half space, and on a Reifenberg flat domain. The directions in which the coefficients are only measurable vary depending on each cylinder. The corresponding elliptic problem is also considered.

On $L_p$-estimates for a class of non-local elliptic equations

We consider non-local elliptic operators with kernel $K(y)=a(y)/|y|^{d+σ}$, where $0 < σ< 2$ is a constant and $a$ is a bounded measurable function. By using a purely analytic method, we prove the continuity of the non-local operator $L$ from the Bessel potential space $H^σ_p$ to $L_p$, and the unique strong solvability of the corresponding non-local elliptic equations in $L_p$ spaces. As a byproduct, we also obtain interior $L_p$-estimates. The novelty of our results is that the function $a$ is not necessarily to be homogeneous, regular, or symmetric. An application of our result is the uniqueness for the martingale problem associated to the operator $L$.

Parabolic and elliptic systems in divergence form with variably partially BMO coefficients

We establish the solvability of second order divergence type parabolic systems in Sobolev spaces. The leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in one spatial direction on each small parabolic cylinder with the spatial direction allowed to depend on the cylinder. In the other orthogonal directions and the time variable the coefficients have locally small mean oscillations. We also obtain the corresponding $W^1_p$-solvability of second order elliptic systems in divergence form. Our results are new even for scalar equations and the proofs simplify the methods used previously in [12]

The aggregation equation with power-law kernels: ill-posedness, mass concentration and similarity solutions

We study the multidimensional aggregation equation $u_t+\Div(uv)=0$, $v=-\nabla K*u$ with initial data in $\cP_2(\bR^d)\cap L_{p}(\bR^d)$. We prove that with biological relevant potential $K(x)=|x|$, the equation is ill-posed in the critical Lebesgue space $L_{d/(d-1)}(\bR^d)$ in the sense that there exists initial data in $\cP_2(\bR^d)\cap L_{d/(d-1)}(\bR^d)$ such that the unique measure-valued solution leaves $L_{d/(d-1)}(\bR^d)$ immediately. We also extend this result to more general power-law kernels $K(x)=|x|^α$, $0<α<2$ for $p=p_s:=d/(d+α-2)$, and prove a conjecture in Bertozzi, Laurent and Rosado [5] about instantaneous mass concentration for initial data in $\cP_2(\bR^d)\cap L_{p}(\bR^d)$ with $p<p_s$. Finally, we classify all the "first kind" radially symmetric similarity solutions in dimension greater than two.

Global estimates for Green's matrix of second order parabolic systems with application to elliptic systems in two dimensional domains

We establish global Gaussian estimates for the Green's matrix of divergence form, second order parabolic systems in a cylindrical domain under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate and a local Hölder estimate. From these estimates, we also derive global estimates for the Green's matrix for elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients in two dimensional domains. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and vectorial cases and discuss several applications of our result.

Green's functions for parabolic systems of second order in time-varying domains

We construct Green's functions for divergence form, second order parabolic systems in non-smooth time-varying domains whose boundaries are locally represented as graph of functions that are Lipschitz continuous in the spatial variables and 1/2-Hölder continuous in the time variable, under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy an interior Hölder continuity estimate. We also derive global pointwise estimates for Green's function in such time-varying domains under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate and a local Hölder continuity estimate. In particular, our results apply to complex perturbations of a single real equation.

On fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in domains with VMO coefficients

We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces $W^{1,2}_p$, $p>d+1$, of the terminal-boundary value problem for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations, including parabolic Bellman's equations, in bounded cylindrical domains with VMO ``coefficients''. The solvability in $W^{2}_p$, $p>d$, of the corresponding elliptic boundary-value problem is also obtained.

On the L_p-solvability of higher order parabolic and elliptic systems with BMO coefficients

We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces for both divergence and non-divergence form higher order parabolic and elliptic systems in the whole space, on a half space, and on a bounded domain. The leading coefficients are assumed to be merely measurable in the time variable and have small mean oscillations with respect to the spatial variables in small balls or cylinders. For the proof, we develop a set of new techniques to produce mean oscillation estimates for systems on a half space.

Solvability of second-order equations with hierarchically partially BMO coefficients

By using some recent results for divergence form equations, we study the $L_p$-solvability of second-order elliptic and parabolic equations in nondivergence form for any $p\in (1,\infty)$. The leading coefficients are assumed to be in locally BMO spaces with suitably small BMO seminorms. We not only extend several previous results by Krylov and Kim [14]-[18] to the full range of $p$, but also deal with equations with more general coefficients.

The Navier-Stokes equations in the critical Lebesgue space

We study regularity criteria for the $d$-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We prove in this paper that if $u\in L_\infty^tL_{d}^x((0,T)\times {\mathbb R}^d)$ is a Leray-Hopf weak solution, then $u$ is smooth and unique in $(0,T)\times \bR^d$. This generalizes a result by Escauriaza, Seregin and Šverák. Additionally, we show that if $T=\infty$ then $u$ goes to zero as $t$ goes to infinity.
