Zero Wrench Control via Wrench Disturbance Observer for Learning-free Peg-in-hole Assembly

This paper proposes a Dynamic Wrench Disturbance Observer (DW-DOB) designed to achieve highly sensitive zero-wrench control in contact-rich manipulation. By embedding task-space inertia into the observer nominal model, DW-DOB cleanly separates intrinsic dynamic reactions from true external wrenches. This preserves sensitivity to small forces and moments while ensuring robust regulation of contact wrenches. A passivity-based analysis further demonstrates that DW-DOB guarantees stable interactions under dynamic conditions, addressing the shortcomings of conventional observers that fail to compensate for inertial effects. Peg-in-hole experiments at industrial tolerances (H7/h6) validate the approach, yielding deeper and more compliant insertions with minimal residual wrenches and outperforming a conventional wrench disturbance observer and a PD baseline. These results highlight DW-DOB as a practical learning-free solution for high-precision zero-wrench control in contact-rich tasks.

Prediction of High Temperature Superconductivity in C2/c-24 Solid Hydrogen

Recent experimental developments in hydrogen-rich materials in high pressures have put this class of materials above others in the race toward room temperature superconductivity. As it is the basis of all the materials in this class, the efforts to determine the properties of pure solid hydrogen at high pressures remain intense. Most notably, a recent experimental study of the metallization of hydrogen identified the crystal phase of the solid as the C2/c-24 molecular phase up to ~425 GPa. It is possible that the observed metallization is caused by band structure effects and not a structural phase transition, and the material remains in this crystal phase up to higher pressures. Therefore it is of crucial importance to determine the superconducting properties of the C2/c-24 phase. Here, we employ a Wannier function-based dense k-point and q-point sampling to compute the electron-phonon coupling and superconducting properties of molecular hydrogen in the C2/c-24 phase. We find that the material has a high superconducting transition temperature of 242 K at 500 GPa. We also find that the transition temperature rapidly increases with pressure in the 400 - 500 GPa range.

Emergence of Topologically Non-trivial Spin-polarized States in a Segmented Linear Chain

The synthesis of new materials with novel or useful properties is one of the most important drivers in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science. Discoveries of this kind are especially significant when they point to promising future basic research and applications. Van der Waals bonded materials comprised of lower-dimensional building blocks have been shown to exhibit emergent properties when isolated in an atomically thin form1-8. Here, we report the discovery of a transition metal chalcogenide in a heretofore unknown segmented linear chain form, where basic building blocks each consisting of two hafnium atoms and nine tellurium atoms (Hf2Te9) are van der Waals bonded end-to-end. First-principle calculations based on density functional theory reveal striking crystal-symmetry-related features in the electronic structure of the segmented chain, including giant spin splitting and nontrivial topological phases of selected energy band states. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals single segmented Hf2Te9 chains isolated within the hollow cores of carbon nanotubes, with a structure consistent with theoretical predictions. Van der Waals-bonded segmented linear chain transition metal chalcogenide materials could open up new opportunities in low-dimensional, gate-tunable, magnetic and topological crystalline systems.

Effects of spin-orbit interaction on magnetic and electronic structures in antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO

Magnetic and electronic structures in LaFeAsO in the single-stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase are studied using first-principles density-functional calculations including the spin-orbit interaction. We show that the longitudinal ordering (LO) where Fe magnetic moments are parallel or anti-parallel with the in-plane AFM ordering vector is lower in energy than transverse orderings (TOs), in good agreement with neutron diffraction experiments. Calculated energy difference between LO and TOs is about 0.1 meV per Fe atom, indicating that LO will prevail at temperature below about 1 K. We also show that the spin-orbit interaction splits degenerate bands at some high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone by about 60 meV, depending on spatial directions of the Fe magnetic moments.
