Semiclassical Limits of Strongly Parabolic Higgs Bundles and Hyperpolygon Spaces

We investigate the Hitchin hyperkähler metric on the moduli space of strongly parabolic $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\C)$-Higgs bundles on the $n$-punctured Riemann sphere and its degeneration obtained by scaling the parabolic weights $tα$ as $t\to0$. Using the parabolic Deligne--Hitchin moduli space, we show that twistor lines of hyperpolygon spaces arise as limiting initial data for twistor lines at small weights, and we construct the corresponding real-analytic families of $λ$-connections. On suitably shrinking regions of the moduli space, the rescaled Hitchin metric converges, in the semiclassical limit, to the hyperkähler metric on the hyperpolygon space $\mathcal X_α$, which thus serves as the natural finite-dimensional model for the degeneration of the infinite-dimensional hyperkähler reduction. Moreover, higher-order corrections of the Hitchin metric in this semiclassical regime can be expressed explicitly in terms of iterated integrals of logarithmic differentials on the punctured sphere.

Branched SL(r,C)-opers

We define the branched analog of SL(r,C)-opers and investigate their properties. For the usual SL(r,C)-opers, the underlying holomorphic vector bundle is independent of the opers. For the branched SL(r,C)-opers, the underlying holomorphic vector bundle depends on the oper. Given a branched SL(r,C)-oper, we associate to it another holomorphic vector bundle equipped with a logarithmic connection. This holomorphic vector bundle does not depend on the branched oper. We characterize the branched SL(r,C)-opers in terms of the logarithmic connections on this fixed holomorphic vector bundle.

Fuchsian DPW potentials for Lawson surfaces

The Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$ of genus $g$ are constructed by rotating and reflecting the Plateau solution $f_t$ with respect to a particular geodesic $4$-gon $Γ_t$ along its boundary, where $t= \tfrac{1}{2g+2}$ is an angle of $Γ_t$. In this paper we combine the existence and regularity of the Plateau solution $f_t$ in $t \in (0, \tfrac{1}{4})$ with topological information about the moduli space of Fuchsian systems on the 4-puncture sphere to obtain existence of a Fuchsian DPW potential $η_t$ for every $f_t$ with $t\in(0, \tfrac{1}{4}]$. Moreover, the coefficients of $η_t$ are shown to depend real analytically on $t$. This implies that the Taylor approximation of the DPW potential $η_t$ and of the area obtained at $t=0$ found in \cite{HHT2} determines these quantities for all $ξ_{1,g}$. In particular, this leads to an algorithm to conformally parametrize all Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$.

Infinitesimal deformations of parabolic connections and parabolic opers

We compute the infinitesimal deformations of quadruples of the form $$(X, S, E_*, D),$$ where $(X, S)$ is a compact Riemann surface with $n$ marked points, $E_*$ is a parabolic vector bundle on $X$ with parabolic structure over $S$, and $D$ is a parabolic connection on $E_*$. Using it we compute the infinitesimal deformations of $(X, S, D)$, where $D$ is a parabolic SL(r, C)-oper on $(X, S)$. It is shown that the monodromy map, from the moduli space of triples $(X, S, D)$, where $D$ is a parabolic SL(r, C)-oper on $(X, S)$, to the SL(r, C)-character variety of X - S, is an immersion.

Real projective structures on Riemann surfaces and new hyper-Kähler manifolds

The twistor space of the moduli space of solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations can be identified with the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of $λ$-connections. We use real projective structures on Riemann surfaces to prove the existence of new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space. Applying the twistorial construction we show the existence of new hyper-Kähler manifolds associated to any compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq2$. These hyper-Kähler manifolds can be considered as moduli spaces of (certain) singular solutions of the self-duality equations.

Branes and moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on smooth projective varieties

Given a smooth complex projective variety $M$ and a smooth closed curve $X \subset M$ such that the homomorphism of fundamental groups $π_1(X) \rightarrow π_1(M)$ is surjective, we study the restriction map of Higgs bundles, namely from Higgs bundles on $M$ to those on $X$. In particular, we investigate the interplay between this restriction map and various types of branes contained in the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on $M$ and $X$. We also consider the set-up where a finite group is acting on $M$ via holomorphic automorphisms or anti-holomorphic involutions, and the curve $X$ is preserved by the action. Branes are studied in this context.

Uniformization of branched surfaces and Higgs bundles

Given a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g_Σ\, \geq\, 2$, and an effective divisor $D\, =\, \sum_i n_i x_i$ on $Σ$ with $\text{degree}(D)\, <\, 2(g_Σ-1)$, there is a unique cone metric on $Σ$ of constant negative curvature $-4$ such that the cone angle at each $x_i$ is $2πn_i$ (see McOwen and Troyanov [McO,Tr]). We describe the Higgs bundle corresponding to this uniformization associated to the above conical metric. We also give a family of Higgs bundles on $Σ$ parametrized by a nonempty open subset of $H^0(Σ,\,K_Σ^{\otimes 2}\otimes{\mathcal O}_Σ(-2D))$ that correspond to conical metrics of the above type on moving Riemann surfaces. These are inspired by Hitchin's results in [Hi1], for the case $D\,=\, 0$.

Energy of sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor space

We study a natural functional on the space of holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of a compact Riemann surface, generalizing the energy of equivariant harmonic maps corresponding to twistor lines. We give a link to a natural meromorphic connection on the hyperholomorphic line bundle recently constructed by Hitchin. Moreover, we prove that for a certain class of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space, the functional is basically given by the Willmore energy of corresponding (equivariant) conformal map to the 3-sphere. As an application we use the functional to distinguish new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space from the space of twistor lines.

Willmore spheres in the 3-sphere revisited

Bryant \cite{Bryant84} classified all Willmore spheres in $3$-space to be given by minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ with embedded planar ends. This note provides new explicit formulas for genus 0 minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ with $2k+1$ embedded planar ends for all $k\geq4.$ Peng and Xiao claimed these examples to exist in \cite{PengXiao2000}, but in the same paper they also claimed the existence of a minimal surface with 7 embedded planar ends, which was falsified by Bryant \cite{Bryant88}.

Navigating the Space of Symmetric CMC Surfaces

In this paper we introduce a flow on the spectral data for symmetric CMC surfaces in the $3$-sphere. The flow is designed in such a way that it changes the topology but fixes the intrinsic (metric) and certain extrinsic (periods) closing conditions of the CMC surfaces. For rational times we obtain closed (possibly branched) connected CMC surfaces of higher genus. We prove the short time existence of this flow near the spectral data of (a class of) CMC tori. In particular we prove that flowing the spectral data for the Clifford torus is equivalent to the flow of Plateau solutions by varying the angle of the fundamental piece in Lawson's construction for the minimal surfaces $ξ_{g,1}.$

The asymptotic behavior of the monodromy representations of the associated families of compact CMC surfaces

Constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in space forms can be described by their associated $\mathbb C^*$-family of flat $SL(2,\mathbb C)$-connections $\nabla^λ$. In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior (for $λ\to0$) of the gauge equivalence classes of $\nabla^λ$ for compact CMC surfaces of genus $g\geq2.$ We prove (under the assumption of simple umbilics) that the asymptotic behavior of the traces of the monodromy representation of $\nabla^λ$ determines the conformal type as well as the Hopf differential locally in the Teichmüller space.

The spectral curve theory for $(k,l)-$symmetric CMC surfaces

Constant mean curvature surfaces in $S^3$ can be studied via their associated family of flat connections. In the case of tori this approach has led to a deep understanding of the moduli space of all CMC tori. For compact CMC surfaces of higher genus the theory is far more involved due to the non abelian nature of their fundamental group. In this paper we extend the spectral curve theory for tori developed in \cite{Hi, PiSt} and for genus $2$ surfaces \cite{He3} to CMC surfaces in $S^3$ of genus $g=k\cdot l$ with commuting $\mathbb Z_{k+1}$ and $\mathbb Z_{l+1}$ symmetries. We determine their associated family of flat connections via certain flat line bundle connections parametrized by the spectral curve. We generalize the flow on spectral data introduced in \cite{HeHeSch} and prove the short time existence of this flow for certain families of initial surfaces. In this way we obtain various families of new CMC surfaces of higher genus with prescribed branch points and prescribed umbilics.

A spectral curve approach to Lawson symmetric CMC surfaces of genus 2

Minimal and CMC surfaces in $S^3$ can be treated via their associated family of flat $\SL(2,\C)$-connections. In this the paper we parametrize the moduli space of flat $\SL(2,\C)$-connections on the Lawson minimal surface of genus 2 which are equivariant with respect to certain symmetries of Lawson's geometric construction. The parametrization uses Hitchin's abelianization procedure to write such connections explicitly in terms of flat line bundles on a complex 1-dimensional torus. This description is used to develop a spectral curve theory for the Lawson surface. This theory applies as well to other CMC and minimal surfaces with the same holomorphic symmetries as the Lawson surface but different Riemann surface structure. Additionally, we study the space of isospectral deformations of compact minimal surface of genus $g\geq2$ and prove that it is generated by simple factor dressing.

Conformal Fibrations of $S^3$ by Circles

It is shown that analytic conformal submersions of $S^3$ are given by intersections of (not necessary closed) complex surfaces with a quadratic real hyper-surface in $\mathbb{C}P^3.$ A new description of the space of circles in the 3-sphere in terms of a natural bilinear form on the tangent sphere bundle of $S^3$ is given. As an application it is shown that every conformal fibration of $S^3$ by circles is the Hopf fibration up to conformal transformations.

Higher genus minimal surfaces in $S^3$ and stable bundles

We consider compact minimal surfaces $f\colon M\to S^3$ of genus 2 which are homotopic to an embedding. We assume that the associated holomorphic bundle is stable. We prove that these surfaces can be constructed from a globally defined family of meromorphic connections by the DPW method. The poles of the meromorphic connections are at the Weierstrass points of the Riemann surface of order at most 2. For the existence proof of the DPW potential we give a characterization of stable extensions $0\to S^{-1}\to V\to S\to 0$ of spin bundles $S$ by its dual $S^{-1}$ in terms of an associated element of $P H^0(M;K^2).$ We also consider the family of holomorphic structures associated to a minimal surface in $S^3.$ For surfaces of genus $g\geq2$ the holonomy of the connections is generically non-abelian and therefore the holomorphic structures are generically stable.

Lawson's genus two minimal surface and meromorphic connections

We investigate the Lawson genus $2$ surface by methods from integrable system theory. We prove that the associated family of flat connections comes from a family of flat connections on a $4-$punctured sphere. We describe the symmetries of the holonomy and show that it is already determined by the holonomy around one of the punctures. We show the existence of a meromorphic DPW potential for the Lawson surface which is globally defined on the surface. We determine this potential explicitly up to two unknown functions depending only on the spectral parameter.
