Semiclassical Limits of Strongly Parabolic Higgs Bundles and Hyperpolygon Spaces

We investigate the Hitchin hyperkähler metric on the moduli space of strongly parabolic $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\C)$-Higgs bundles on the $n$-punctured Riemann sphere and its degeneration obtained by scaling the parabolic weights $tα$ as $t\to0$. Using the parabolic Deligne--Hitchin moduli space, we show that twistor lines of hyperpolygon spaces arise as limiting initial data for twistor lines at small weights, and we construct the corresponding real-analytic families of $λ$-connections. On suitably shrinking regions of the moduli space, the rescaled Hitchin metric converges, in the semiclassical limit, to the hyperkähler metric on the hyperpolygon space $\mathcal X_α$, which thus serves as the natural finite-dimensional model for the degeneration of the infinite-dimensional hyperkähler reduction. Moreover, higher-order corrections of the Hitchin metric in this semiclassical regime can be expressed explicitly in terms of iterated integrals of logarithmic differentials on the punctured sphere.

Fuchsian DPW potentials for Lawson surfaces

The Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$ of genus $g$ are constructed by rotating and reflecting the Plateau solution $f_t$ with respect to a particular geodesic $4$-gon $Γ_t$ along its boundary, where $t= \tfrac{1}{2g+2}$ is an angle of $Γ_t$. In this paper we combine the existence and regularity of the Plateau solution $f_t$ in $t \in (0, \tfrac{1}{4})$ with topological information about the moduli space of Fuchsian systems on the 4-puncture sphere to obtain existence of a Fuchsian DPW potential $η_t$ for every $f_t$ with $t\in(0, \tfrac{1}{4}]$. Moreover, the coefficients of $η_t$ are shown to depend real analytically on $t$. This implies that the Taylor approximation of the DPW potential $η_t$ and of the area obtained at $t=0$ found in \cite{HHT2} determines these quantities for all $ξ_{1,g}$. In particular, this leads to an algorithm to conformally parametrize all Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$.

Candidates for non-rectangular constrained Willmore minimizers

For every $\;b>1\;$ fixed, we explicitly construct $1$-dimensional families of embedded constrained Willmore tori parametrized by their conformal class $\;(a,b)$\; with $\; a \sim_b 0^+\;$ deforming the homogenous torus \;$f^b$ of conformal class \;$(0,b).$ The variational vector field at $f^b$ is hereby given by a non-trivial zero direction of a penalized Willmore stability operator which we show to coincide with a double point of the corresponding spectral curve. Further, we characterize for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+$ the family obtained by opening the "smallest" double point on the spectral curve which is heuristically the direction with the smallest increase of Willmore energy at $f^b$. Indeed we show in \cite{HelNdi1} that these candidates minimize the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+.$

First explicit constrained Willmore minimizers of non-rectangular conformal class

We study immersed tori in $3$-space minimizing the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class. Within the rectangular conformal classes $\;(0,b)\;$ with $\;b \sim 1\;$ the homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ are known to be the unique constrained Willmore minimizers (up to invariance). In this paper we generalize this result and show that the candidates constructed in \cite{HelNdi2} are indeed constrained Willmore minimizers in certain non-rectangular conformal classes $\;(a,b).\;$ Difficulties arise from the fact that these minimizers are non-degenerate for $\;a \neq 0\;$ but smoothly converge to the degenerate homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ as $\;a \longrightarrow 0.\;$ As a byproduct of our arguments, we show that the minimal Willmore energy $\;ω(a,b)\;$ is real analytic and concave in $\;a \in (0, a^b)\;$ for some $\;a^b>0\;$ and fixed $\;b \sim 1,\;$ $b \neq 1.$

Navigating the Space of Symmetric CMC Surfaces

In this paper we introduce a flow on the spectral data for symmetric CMC surfaces in the $3$-sphere. The flow is designed in such a way that it changes the topology but fixes the intrinsic (metric) and certain extrinsic (periods) closing conditions of the CMC surfaces. For rational times we obtain closed (possibly branched) connected CMC surfaces of higher genus. We prove the short time existence of this flow near the spectral data of (a class of) CMC tori. In particular we prove that flowing the spectral data for the Clifford torus is equivalent to the flow of Plateau solutions by varying the angle of the fundamental piece in Lawson's construction for the minimal surfaces $ξ_{g,1}.$

The spectral curve theory for $(k,l)-$symmetric CMC surfaces

Constant mean curvature surfaces in $S^3$ can be studied via their associated family of flat connections. In the case of tori this approach has led to a deep understanding of the moduli space of all CMC tori. For compact CMC surfaces of higher genus the theory is far more involved due to the non abelian nature of their fundamental group. In this paper we extend the spectral curve theory for tori developed in \cite{Hi, PiSt} and for genus $2$ surfaces \cite{He3} to CMC surfaces in $S^3$ of genus $g=k\cdot l$ with commuting $\mathbb Z_{k+1}$ and $\mathbb Z_{l+1}$ symmetries. We determine their associated family of flat connections via certain flat line bundle connections parametrized by the spectral curve. We generalize the flow on spectral data introduced in \cite{HeHeSch} and prove the short time existence of this flow for certain families of initial surfaces. In this way we obtain various families of new CMC surfaces of higher genus with prescribed branch points and prescribed umbilics.

Constrained Willmore Tori and Elastic Curves in 2-Dimensional Space Forms

In this paper we consider two special classes of constrained Willmore tori in the 3-sphere. The first class is given by the rotation of closed elastic curves in the upper half plane - viewed as the hyperbolic plane - around the x-axis. The second is given as the preimage of closed constrained elastic curves, i.e., elastic curve with enclosed area constraint, in the round 2-sphere under the Hopf fibration. We show that all conformal types can be isometrically immersed into S^3 as constrained Willmore (Hopf) tori and write down all constrained elastic curves in H^2 and S^2 in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic functions. Further, we determine the closing condition for the curves and compute the Willmore energy and the conformal type of the resulting tori.

Equivariant constrained Willmore tori in the 3-sphere

In this paper we study equivariant constrained Willmore tori in the 3-sphere. These tori admit a 1-parameter group of Möbius symmetries and are critical points of the Willmore energy under conformal variations. We show that the associated spectral curve of an equivariant torus is given by a double covering of $\mathbb C$ and classify equivariant constrained Willmore tori by the genus g of their spectral curve. In this case the spectral genus satisfies $g \leq 3.$

Constrained Willmore and CMC tori in the 3-sphere

Constrained Willmore surfaces are critical points of the Willmore functional under conformal variations. As shown in [5] one can associate to any conformally immersed constrained Willmore torus f a compact Riemann surface Σ, such that f can be reconstructed in terms of algebraic data on Σ. Particularly interesting examples of constrained Willmore tori are the tori with constant mean curvature (CMC) in a 3-dimensional space form. It is shown in [14] and in [16] that the spectral curves of these tori are hyperelliptic. In this paper we show under mild conditions that a constrained Willmore torus f in the 3-sphere is a CMC torus in a 3-dimensional space form if its spectral curve has the structure of a CMC spectral curve.
