Use of $Z$ polarization in $e^+e^- \to ZH$ to measure the triple-Higgs coupling

It is shown that a certain angular asymmetry of charged leptons produced in the decay of $Z$ in the process $e^+e^- \to ZH$, related to a tensor polarization component of the $Z$, can be used to constrain the anomalous triple-Higgs coupling, independent of the other anomalous couplings like the $ZZH$ coupling which dominate at tree level. This is because the angular asymmetry is odd under na\" ive time reversal, and hence dependent on loop-level contributions. At a future $e^+e^-$ collider like the International Linear Collider (ILC), for example, a limit of about $3.4$ might be placed on the ratio of the actual triple Higgs coupling to that predicted in the standard model for a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 30 fb$^{-1}$ with electron and positron beams having longitudinal polarization of $-80\%$ and $+30\%$, respectively.

Study of anomalous gauge-Higgs couplings using $Z$ boson polarization at LHC

We estimate model-independent bounds that could be obtained on the anomalous $ZZH$ vertex using polarization parameters of the $Z$ boson produced in the Higgstrahlung process at the LHC. We calculate the eight independent polarization parameters from the spin density matrix elements of the $Z$, which can probe underlying new physics contributions to $ZH$ production. By using the approach that connects these polarization observables to the coefficients in the angular distribution of the decay products of the $Z$, we estimate the limits on the anomalous $ZZH$ coupling that can be obtained at the 14 TeV LHC.

Probing anomalous gauge-Higgs couplings using $Z$ boson polarization at $e^+ e^-$ colliders

We study possible new physics interactions in the $ZZH$ vertex contributing to the Higgsstrahlung process $e^+ e^- \to ZH$ at proposed future $e^+e^-$ colliders using the polarization of the $Z$ as a probe. We calculate the spin density matrix of the $Z$ for the process and determine the eight independent polarization parameters of the $Z$ boson which have the potential to constrain the anomalous couplings. We study angular asymmetries using the decay leptons from the $Z$ boson which are simply related to the polarization observables. We also estimate the limits that can be placed on the anomalous couplings using measurements of these angular asymmetries at centre of mass energies of 250 GeV and 500 GeV and various combinations of polarized $e^+$ and $e^-$ beams.

Effective fermion-Higgs interactions at an $e^+e^-$ collider with polarized beams

We consider the possibility of new physics giving rise to effective interactions of the form $e^+e^-Hf \bar f$, where $f$ represents a charged lepton $\ell$ or a (light) quark $q$, and $H$ the recently discovered Higgs boson. Such vertices would give contributions beyond the standard model to the Higgs production processes $e^+e^- \to H\ell^+\ell^-$ and $e^+e^- \to H q \bar q$ at a future $e^+e^-$ collider. We write the most general form for these vertices allowed by Lorentz symmetry. Assuming that such interactions contribute in addition to the standard model production processes, where the final-state fermion pair comes from the decay of the $Z$ boson, we obtain the differential cross section for the processes $e^+e^- \to H\ell^+\ell^-$ and $e^+e^- \to Hq\bar q$ to linear order in the effective interactions. We propose several observables with differing CP and T properties which, if measured, can be used to constrain the couplings occurring in interaction vertices. We derive possible limits on these couplings that may be obtained at a collider with centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 500 fb$^{-1}$. We also carry out the analysis assuming that both the electron and positron beams can be longitudinally polarized, and find that the sensitivity to the couplings can be improved by a factor of 2-4 by a specific choice of the signs of the polarizations of both the electron and positron beams for the same integrated luminosity.

Probing top charged-Higgs production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider

We study single top production in association with a charged Higgs in the type II two Higgs doublet model at the Large Hadron Collider. The polarization of the top, reflected in the angular distributions of its decay products, can be a sensitive probe of new physics in its production. We present theoretically expected polarizations of the top for top charged-Higgs production, which is significantly different from that in the closely related process of t-W production in the Standard Model. We then show that an azimuthal symmetry, constructed from the decay lepton angular distribution in the laboratory frame, is a sensitive probe of top polarization and can be used to constrain parameters involved in top charged-Higgs production.

On measurement of top polarization as a probe of $t \bar t$ production mechanisms at the LHC

In this note we demonstrate the use of top polarization in the study of $t \bar t$ resonances at the LHC, in the possible case where the dynamics implies a non-zero top polarization. As a probe of top polarization we construct an asymmetry in the decay-lepton azimuthal angle distribution (corresponding to the sign of $\cosϕ_\ell$) in the laboratory. The asymmetry is non-vanishing even for a symmetric collider like the LHC, where a positive $z$ axis is not uniquely defined. The angular distribution of the leptons has the advantage of being a faithful top-spin analyzer, unaffected by possible anomalous $tbW$ couplings, to linear order. We study, for purposes of demonstration, the case of a $Z'$ as might exist in the little Higgs models. We identify kinematic cuts which ensure that our asymmetry reflects the polarization in sign and magnitude. We investigate possibilities at the LHC with two energy options: $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV and $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, as well as at the Tevatron. At the LHC the model predicts net top quark polarization of the order of a few per cent for $M_{Z'} \simeq 1200 $ GeV, being as high as $10 %$ for a smaller mass of the $Z'$ of $700$ GeV and for the largest allowed coupling in the model, the values being higher for the $7$ TeV option. These polarizations translate to a deviation from the standard-model value of azimuthal asymmetry of up to about $4%$ ($7%$) for $14$ ($7$) TeV LHC, whereas for the Tevatron, values as high as $12%$ are attained. For the $14$ TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 10 fb$^{-1}$, these numbers translate into a $3 σ$ sensitivity over a large part of the range $500 \lesssim M_{Z'} \lesssim 1500 $ GeV.

Single production of sleptons with polarized tops at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the production of a single charged slepton in association with a top quark in a R-parity violating supersymmetric model with lepton number violating interactions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find that the longitudinal polarization asymmetry of the top quark in such a production mode is significantly different from that in the production of a single top or a top pair in the Standard Model for a wide range of slepton masses. Our signal analysis shows that the top-slepton associate production leads to final states with distinct kinematic signatures, which differ from the Standard Model background.

Top polarization as a probe of new physics

We investigate the effects of new physics scenarios containing a high mass vector resonance on top pair production at the LHC, using the polarization of the produced top. In particular we use kinematic distributions of the secondary lepton coming from top decay, which depends on top polarization, as it has been shown that the angular distribution of the decay lepton is insensitive to the anomalous tbW vertex and hence is a pure probe of new physics in top quark production. Spin sensitive variables involving the decay lepton are used to probe top polarization. Some sensitivity is found for the new couplings of the top.

Charged lepton distributions as a probe of contact e+e-HZ interactions at a linear collider with polarized beams

We examine very general four-point interactions arising from new physics and contributing to the Higgs production process e+e- -> HZ. We write all possible forms for these interactions consistent with Lorentz invariance. We allow the possibility of CP violation. Contributions to the process from anomalous ZZH and gamma ZH interactions studied earlier arise as a special case of our four-point amplitude. We consider the decay of Z into a charged lepton pair and obtain expressions for angular distributions of charged leptons arising from the interference of the four-point contribution with the standard-model contribution. We take into account possible longitudinal or transverse beam polarization likely to be available at a linear collider. We examine several correlations which can be used to study the various form factors present in the e+e-HZ contact interactions. We also obtain the sensitivity of these correlations in constraining the new-physics interactions at a linear collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV with longitudinal or transverse polarization.

Searching for signals of minimal length in extra dimensional models using dilepton production at hadron colliders

Theories of quantum gravity suggest the existence of a minimal length scale. It is interesting to speculate what the consequences of the existence of such a length scale would be for models of large extra dimensions, in particular, the ADD model. When ADD model is conflated with the minimal length scale scenario, processes involving virtual exhange of gravitons cease to be ulraviolent divergent. We study the production of dileptons at hadron colliders as an example of a process mediated by virtual gravitons. We find that the bounds we derive on the effective string scale are significantly different (in fact, less stringent) from those derived in the conventional ADD model, both at the upgraded Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider.
