Brain volume: An important determinant of functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke

Objective: To determine whether brain volume is associated with functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data of the multi-site, international hospital-based MRI-GENetics Interface Exploration (MRI-GENIE) study (July 1, 2014- March 16, 2019) with clinical brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) obtained on admission for index stroke and functional outcome assessment. Post-stroke outcome was determined using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score (0-6; 0: asymptomatic; 6 death) recorded between 60-190 days after stroke. Demographics and other clinical variables including acute stroke severity (measured as National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score), vascular risk factors, and etiologic stroke subtypes (Causative Classification of Stroke) were recorded during index admission. Results: Utilizing the data from 912 acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients (65+/-15 years of age, 58% male, 57% history of smoking, and 65% hypertensive) in a generalized linear model, brain volume (per 155.1cm^3 ) was associated with age (beta -0.3 (per 14.4 years)), male sex (beta 1.0) and prior stroke (beta -0.2). In the multivariable outcome model, brain volume was an independent predictor of mRS (beta -0.233), with reduced odds of worse long-term functional outcomes (OR: 0.8, 95% CI 0.7-0.9) in those with larger brain volumes. Conclusions: Larger brain volume quantified on clinical MRI of AIS patients at time of stroke purports a protective mechanism. The role of brain volume as a prognostic, protective biomarker has the potential to forge new areas of research and advance current knowledge of mechanisms of post-stroke recovery.

Top polarisation as a probe of CP-mixing top-Higgs coupling in $tjh$ signals

In this letter we explore beyond the Standard Model top-Higgs Yukawa couplings as a function of a CP-mixing parameter $ξ_t$ at the 14 TeV HL-LHC in the process $pp\to thj$. We observe that angular variables of the decay products of the top are non-trivially sensitive to $ξ_t$. This fact is exploited in a full detector level analysis that employs machine learning techniques to optimize signal sensitivity on a suite of variables, including lepton azimuthal angle. The key result of this study is an improved projected exclusion limit on $ξ_t$ even when including the realistic effects of detector smearing and a conservative estimate of systematic error.

Boosting the charged Higgs search prospects using jet substructure at the LHC

Charged Higgs bosons are predicted in variety of theoretically well-motivated new physics models with extended Higgs sectors. In this study, we focus on a type-II two Higgs doublet model (2HDM-II) and consider a heavy charged Higgs with its mass ranging from 500 GeV to 1 TeV as dictated by the $b\to sγ$ constraints which render $M_{H^\pm}>480$ GeV. We study the dominant production mode $H^\pm t$ associated production with $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ being the dominant decay channel when the pseudoscalar $A$ is considerably lighter. For such a heavy charged Higgs, both the decay products $W^\pm$ and $A$ are relatively boosted. In such a scenario, we apply the jet substructure analysis of tagging the fat pseudoscalar and $W$ jets in order to eliminate the standard model background efficiently. We perform a detailed detector simulation for the signal and background processes at the 14 TeV LHC. We introduce various kinematical cuts to determine the signal significance for a number of benchmark points with charged Higgs boson mass from 500 GeV to 1 TeV in the $W^\pm A$ decay channel. Finally we perform a multivariate analysis utilizing a boosted decision tree algorithm to optimize these significances.

Charged Higgs Boson Searches at the LHC via Multiple $b\bar bW^\pm$ Final States

We review the prospects of the Large Hadron Collider in accessing heavy charged Higgs boson signals in $b\bar b W^\pm$ final states, wherein the contributing channels can be $H^+\to t\bar b$, $hW^\pm$, $HW^\pm$ and $AW^\pm$. In particular, we devise a selection strategy which optimizes their global yield. We consider a 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type-II and we assume as production mode $bg\to tH^-$ + c.c., the dominant one over the range $M_{H^\pm}\ge 480$ GeV, as dictated by $b\to sγ$ constraints. Possibilities of detection are found to be significant for various Run 2 energies and luminosities.

Effective fermion-Higgs interactions at an $e^+e^-$ collider with polarized beams

We consider the possibility of new physics giving rise to effective interactions of the form $e^+e^-Hf \bar f$, where $f$ represents a charged lepton $\ell$ or a (light) quark $q$, and $H$ the recently discovered Higgs boson. Such vertices would give contributions beyond the standard model to the Higgs production processes $e^+e^- \to H\ell^+\ell^-$ and $e^+e^- \to H q \bar q$ at a future $e^+e^-$ collider. We write the most general form for these vertices allowed by Lorentz symmetry. Assuming that such interactions contribute in addition to the standard model production processes, where the final-state fermion pair comes from the decay of the $Z$ boson, we obtain the differential cross section for the processes $e^+e^- \to H\ell^+\ell^-$ and $e^+e^- \to Hq\bar q$ to linear order in the effective interactions. We propose several observables with differing CP and T properties which, if measured, can be used to constrain the couplings occurring in interaction vertices. We derive possible limits on these couplings that may be obtained at a collider with centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 500 fb$^{-1}$. We also carry out the analysis assuming that both the electron and positron beams can be longitudinally polarized, and find that the sensitivity to the couplings can be improved by a factor of 2-4 by a specific choice of the signs of the polarizations of both the electron and positron beams for the same integrated luminosity.

Interpreting 750 GeV diphoton excess in SU(5) grand unified theory

The ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC have found significant excess in the diphoton invariant mass distribution near 750 GeV. We interpret this excess in a predictive nonsupersymmetric SU(5) grand unified framework with a singlet scalar and light adjoint fermions. The 750 GeV resonance is identified as a gauge singlet scalar. Both its production and decays are induced by 24 dimensional adjoint fermions predicted within SU(5). The adjoint fermions are assumed to be odd under $Z_2$ symmetry which forbids their direct coupling to the standard model fermions. We show that the observed diphoton excess can be explained with sub-TeV adjoint fermions and with perturbative Yukawa coupling. A narrow width scenario is more preferred while a simultaneous explanation of observed cross section and large total decay width requires some of the adjoint fermions lighter than 375 GeV. The model also provides a singlet fermion as a candidate of cold dark matter. The gauge coupling unification is achieved in the framework by introducing color sextet scalars while being consistent with the proton decay constraint.

Optimising Charged Higgs Boson Searches at the Large Hadron Collider Across $b\bar b W^\pm$ Final States

In the light of the most recent data from Higgs boson searches and analyses, we re-assess the scope of the Large Hadron Collider in accessing heavy charged Higgs boson signals in $b\bar b W^\pm$ final states, wherein the contributing channels can be $H^+\to t\bar b$, $hW^\pm, HW^\pm$ and $AW^\pm$. Unraveling the CP phase of top-Higgs coupling in associated production at the LHC

We study the sensitivity of top polarization observables to the CP phase $ζ_t$ in the top Yukawa coupling in the process $pp\to thj$ at the 14 TeV high-luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). We calculate the top polarization in this process as well as an azimuthal asymmetry of the charged lepton arising from the decay of the top in the lab frame. We find that the dependence of this lab-frame azimuthal asymmetry on the phase $ζ_t$ closely resembles the dependence of the top polarization on $ζ_t$. As compared to the cross section, which is sensitive to $ζ_t$ for larger values, the lepton azimuthal asymmetry can provide a sensitive measurement of $ζ_t$ for smaller values.

Polarization of the top quark as a probe of its chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings in single-top production at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to top quark chromomagnetic (CMDM) and chromoelectric (CEDM) dipole moments and $Wtb$ effective couplings in single-top production in association with a $W^-$ boson, followed by semileptonic decay of the top. We calculate the top polarization and the effects of these anomalous couplings on it at two centre-of-mass (cm) energies, 8 TeV and 14 TeV. As a measure of top polarization, we look at decay-lepton angular distributions in the laboratory frame, without requiring reconstruction of the rest frame of the top, and study the effect of the anomalous couplings on these distributions. We construct certain asymmetries to study the sensitivity of these distributions to top-quark couplings. The Wt single-top production mode helps to isolate the anomalous $ttg$ and $Wtb$ couplings, in contrast to top-pair production and other single-top production modes, where other new-physics effects can also contribute. We determine individual limits on the dominant couplings, viz., the real part of the CMDM $Reρ_2$, the imaginary part of the CEDM $Imρ_3$, and the real part of the tensor Wtb coupling $Ref_{2r}$, which may be obtained by utilizing these asymmetries at the LHC. We also obtain simultaneous limits on pairs of these couplings taking two couplings to be non-zero at a time.

We also obtain simultaneous limits on pairs of these couplings taking two couplings to be non-zero at a time.

Radiative and Seesaw Threshold Corrections to the $S_3$ Symmetric Neutrino Mass Matrix

We systematically analyze the radiative corrections to the $S_3$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix at high energy scale, say the GUT scale, in the charged lepton basis. There are significant corrections to the neutrino parameters both in the Standard Model (SM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with large tan$β$, when the renormalization group evolution (RGE) and seesaw threshold effects are taken into consideration. We find that in the SM all three mixing angles and atmospheric mass squared difference are simultaneously obtained in their current 3$σ$ ranges at the electroweak scale. However, the solar mass squared difference is found to be larger than its allowed 3$σ$ range at the low scale in this case. There are significant contributions to neutrino masses and mixing angles in the MSSM with large tan$β$ from the RGEs even in the absence of seesaw threshold corrections. However, we find that the mass squared differences and the mixing angles are obtained in their current 3$σ$ ranges at low energy when the seesaw threshold effects are also taken into account in the MSSM with large tan$β$.

A light triplet boson and Higgs-to-diphoton in supersymmetric type II seesaw

The supersymmetric type II seesaw may leave a limit where a triplet boson along with the standard Higgs boson remains light. Working in this limit with small triplet vacuum expectation vlaues, we explore how much such a light triplet boson can contribute to the Higgs boson decay to diphoton, and analyze the feasibility to observe it through same-sign di-lepton and tetra-lepton signals in the forthcoming LHC run after setting a LHC7 limit in a simplified parameter space of the triplet vaccum expectation value and the doubly charged boson mass.

Measuring the charged Higgs mass and distinguishing between models with top-quark observables

We study the process of single-top production in association with a charged Higgs boson at the LHC and discuss how top-quark polarization and an azimuthal asymmetry $A_φ$ of the charged lepton from top decay can be used in some extensions of the Standard Model to determine or constrain the charged Higgs boson mass. We also discuss some scenarios where these variables can be used to distinguish between different models.

Probing chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings of the top quark using its polarization in pair production at hadron colliders

The Tevatron, where the top quark was discovered, and the currently functional Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with copiously produced top pairs, enable a detailed study of top-quark properties. In particular, they can be used to test the couplings of the top quark to gauge bosons. Several extensions of the standard model (SM) can give rise to anomalous couplings of the top quark to gauge bosons, in particular, the gluons. In this work we examine how top-quark polarization, which is predicted to be negligibly small in the SM, can be used to measure chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings of the top quark to gluons. We lay special emphasis on the use of angular distributions and asymmetries of charged leptons arising from top decay as measures of top polarization and hence of these anomalous couplings. Sensitivities that may be reached at the Tevatron and the LHC are obtained.

Same-sign tetra-leptons in type II seesaw at the LHC

In type II seesaw model of neutrino mass generation, we study a remarkable signal of same-sign tetra-lepton (SS4L) signal at the Large hadron collider. When doubly charged Higgs is lightest, the heavier singly charged or neutral Higgs boson produces a doubly charged Higgs boson through its fast gauge decay. This leads to a novel signature of same-sign tetra-leptons resulting from a pair production of same-sign doubly charged Higgs bosons. We study production cross section for the SS4L signal in parameter space of the mass splitting among triplet components and the triplet vacuum expectation value at the LHC.

Search for a doubly-charged boson in four lepton final states in type II seesaw

CMS and ATLAS have searched for a doubly-charged boson $H^{\pm\pm}$ which may arise from type II seesaw in the 7 TeV run at the LHC by considering pair or associated production of doubly-charged bosons under the assumption of degenerate triplet scalars. In this work, we consider non-degenerate triplet components with the mass gap $ΔM \sim 1 - 40$ GeV which leads to enhanced pair-production cross-sections of $H^{\pm\pm}$ added by the gauge decays of the heavier neutral and singly-charged bosons. We reevaluate the constraints in the $ΔM-M_{H^{++}}$ plane depending on the triplet vacuum expectation value $v_Δ$ in the type II seesaw model which are much more stringent than the current search limits. We further study the possibility of observing same-sign tetra-lepton signals in the allowed parameter space which can be probed in the future runs of the LHC.

Vacuum Stability, Perturbativity, EWPD and Higgs-to-diphoton in Type II Seesaw

We study constraints from perturbativity and vacuum stability as well as the EWPD in the type II seesaw model. As a result, we can put stringent limits on the Higgs triplet couplings depending on the cut-off scale. The EWPD tightly constrain the Higgs triplet mass splitting to be smaller than about 40 GeV. Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show how much it can deviate from the Standard Model prediction for specific parameter points.

CP violation in tbW couplings at the LHC

We study in a model-independent way anomalous CP-violating tbW effective couplings that might arise from new physics in the processes pp-> tW^- X and pp-> tbar W^+X, followed by semileptonic decay of t and tbar. These processes have a dependence on effective tbW couplings both in the production process as well as in the decay of the t or tbar. We propose several CP-violating asymmetries constructed out of variables in the two processes, including t and tbar polarization, and energy and azimuthal angles of the decay particles. We find that it is feasible to probe a certain CP-violating combination of anomalous couplings at the per cent level at the LHC for centre-of-mass energy 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 10 fb^{-1}.

New physics contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron

The Tevatron has measured a discrepancy relative to the Standard Model prediction in the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production. This asymmetry grows with the rapidity difference of the two top quarks. It also increases with the invariant mass of the tt pair, reaching, for high invariant masses, 3.4 standard deviations above the Next to Leading Order prediction for the charge asymmetry of QCD. However, perfect agreement between experiment and the Standard Model was found in both total and differential cross section of top quark pair production. As this result could be a sign of new physics we have parametrized this new physics in terms of a complete set of dimension six operators involving the top quark. We have then used a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach in order to find the best set of parameters that fits the data, using all available data regarding top quark pair production at the Tevatron. We have found that just a very small number of operators are able to fit the data better than the Standard Model.

Performance comparison of various routing protocols in different mobility models

Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a infrastructure less network in which two or more devices have wireless communication which can communicate with each other and exchange information without need of any centralized administrator. Each node in the ad hoc network acts as a router, forwarding data packets for other nodes. The main issue is to compare the existing routing protocol and finding the best one. The scope of this study is to test routing performance of three different routing protocols (AODV, OLSR and DSDV) with respect to various mobility models using NS2 simulator. In this paper the parameters used for comparison are packet delivery fraction (PDF), average end to end delay (AEED), normalized routing load (NRL) and throughput.

Same-Sign Tetra-Leptons from Type II Seesaw

The type II seesaw mechanism introduces a hypercharged Higgs triplet to explain the observed neutrino masses and mixing. Among three triplet components, the doubly charged Higgs boson can be the lightest and decay mainly to same-sign di-leptons. Furthermore, the heavier singly charged or neutral Higgs boson produces a doubly charged Higgs boson through its fast gauge decay. This leads to a novel signature of same-sign tetra-leptons resulting from a pair production of same-sign doubly charged Higgs bosons caused by the nearly degenerate neutral scalar mixing which can be sizable for an appropriate choice of the model parameters. After studying production cross-sections for the same-sign tetra-lepton signal in the parameter space of the mass splitting among triplet components and the triplet vacuum expectation value, we provide a LHC analysis of the same-sign tetra-lepton signal for a benchmark point chosen to maximize the event number.

Securing a mobile adhoc network from routing attacks through the application of genetic algorithm

In recent years, the static shortest path (SP) problem has been well addressed using intelligent optimization techniques, e.g., artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms (GAs), particle swarm optimization, etc. However, with the advancement in wireless communications, more and more mobile wireless networks appear, e.g., mobile networks [mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs)], wireless sensor networks, etc. One of the most important characteristics in mobile wireless networks is the topology dynamics, i.e., the network topology changes over time due to energy conservation or node mobility. Therefore, the SP routing problem in MANETs turns out to be a dynamic optimization problem. GA's are able to find, if not the shortest, at least an optimal path between source and destination in mobile ad-hoc network nodes. And we obtain the alternative path or backup path to avoid reroute discovery in the case of link failure or node failure.

Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show a possible enhancement by up to 100 % and 50 % for the cut-off scale of 100 TeV and $10^{19}$ GeV, respectively, if the doubly charged Higgs boson mass is as low as 100 GeV.

Forward-backward asymmetry in top quark production from light colored scalars in SO(10) model

The forward-backward asymmetry in top pair production at Tevatron has been reconfirmed by the CDF collaboration with 5.3 fb^{-1} of accumulated data. These measurements also report that the asymmetry is the largest in regions of high invariant mass M_{t\bar{t}} and rapidity difference |ΔY|. We consider light colored sextet scalars appearing in a particular non-supersymmetric \10 grand unification model within the \bar{126} scalar representation. These scalar states have masses in the range of 300 \text{GeV}-2 \text{TeV} consistent with the requirements of gauge coupling unification and bounds on the proton lifetime. The cross section and the total asymmetry can be simultaneously explained with the contributions of these scalars within 1$σ$. We find that the simultaneous fitting of the cross section, the total asymmetry and the asymmetries in different rapidity and M_{t\bar{t}} bins gives only a marginal improvement over the SM contribution. We also study various production mechanisms of these colored sextet scalars at the LHC.

Probing anomalous tbW couplings in single-top production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to anomalous tbW couplings in single-top production in association with a W^- boson followed by semileptonic decay of the top. We calculate top polarization and the effects of these anomalous couplings to it at two centre-of-mass (cm) energies of 7 TeV and 14 TeV. As a measure of top polarization, we look at various laboratory frame distributions of its decay products, viz., lepton angular and energy distributions and b-quark angular distributions, without requiring reconstruction of the rest frame of the top, and study the effect of anomalous couplings on these distributions. We construct certain asymmetries to study the sensitivity of these distributions to anomalous tbW couplings. We find that 1σlimits on real and imaginary parts of the dominant anomalous coupling Ref_{2R} which may be obtained by utilizing these asymmetries at the LHC with cm energy of 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 10 fb^{-1} will be significantly better than the expectations from direct measurements of cross sections and some other variables at the LHC and over an order of magnitude better than the indirect limits.

Probing top charged-Higgs production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider

We study single top production in association with a charged Higgs in the type II two Higgs doublet model at the Large Hadron Collider. The polarization of the top, reflected in the angular distributions of its decay products, can be a sensitive probe of new physics in its production. We present theoretically expected polarizations of the top for top charged-Higgs production, which is significantly different from that in the closely related process of t-W production in the Standard Model. We then show that an azimuthal symmetry, constructed from the decay lepton angular distribution in the laboratory frame, is a sensitive probe of top polarization and can be used to constrain parameters involved in top charged-Higgs production.

Decay-lepton correlations as probes of anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions in e+e- --> ZH with polarized beams

We examine the contributions of various couplings in general ZZH and gammaZH interactions arising from new physics to the Higgs production process e+e- --> HZ, followed by the decay of the Z into a charged-lepton pair. We take into account possible longitudinal or transverse beam polarization likely to be available at a linear collider. We show how expectation values of certain simple observables in suitable combinations with appropriate longitudinal beam polarizations can be used to disentangle various couplings from one another. Longitudinal polarization can also improve the sensitivity for measurement of several couplings. A striking result is that using transverse polarization, one of the gammaZH couplings, not otherwise accessible, can be determined independently of all other couplings.

Angular distributions as a probe of anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions at a linear collider with polarized beams

We examine the contribution of general Z*ZH and gamma*ZH three-point interactions arising from new physics to the Higgs production process e+e- -> HZ. From Lorentz covariance, each of these vertices may be written in terms of three (complex) form factors, whose real and imaginary parts together make six independent couplings. We take into account possible longitudinal or transverse beam polarization likely to be available at a linear collider. We show how partial cross sections and angular asymmetries in suitable combinations with appropriate beam polarizations, can be used to disentangle various couplings from one another. A striking result is that using transverse polarization, one of the gammaZH couplings, not otherwise accessible, can be determined independently of all other couplings. Transverse polarization also helps in the independent determination of a combination of two other couplings, in contrast to a combination of four accessible with unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beams. We also obtain the sensitivity of the various observables in constraining the new-physics interactions at a linear collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV with longitudinal or transverse polarization.
