Order parameter and spectral function in $d$-wave holographic superconductors

We consider the $d$-wave holographic superconductor model with full backreaction on the metric, addressing a missing part in the literature. We have identified the corrected order parameter by comparing the fermionic spectral function with the momentum-dependent order parameter. By numerical investigations of the fermionic spectral function in the presence of a tensor condensate, we find the Fermi arc and the gapped behavior, which closely resemble ARPES data. Moreover, we have examined the influence of the coupling constant, chemical potential, and temperature on the spectral function. We find that $d$-wave fermionic spectral function can be obtained through $p_x$ and $p_y$ condensates combined with two fermion flavors. Similarly, combining $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$ orbitals symmetry with two fermion flavors leads to a $g$-wave spectral function.

Heun's equation and analytic structure of the Gap in Holographic superconductivity

We present the new method to calculate the critical temperature as a function of $Δ$, conformal dimension of the cooper operator. We find that, in the regime $1/2\leq Δ<1$ where the AC conductivity does not show a gap, the critical temperature is not well defined. We also got expression of AC conductivity for $Δ=2$, which agrees with numerical result in the probe approximation.

Island, Page Curve and Superradiance of Rotating BTZ Black Holes

We study the Page curve and the information paradox for the BTZ black hole coupled to two thermal baths by applying the island paradigm. We prove that as the island locates outside the event horizon, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation for finite temperature black holes obeys the Page curve. However, for extremal rotating black holes, the Page time and the scrambling time become divergent. To avoid the ill-defined of the Page time, we consider the contribution of superradiance, which is a process that can extract rotational energy from black holes. The superradiance continues in a period much shorter than the Page time when the central charge $c$ is not too large. In this process, the Page time, the scrambling time and the black hole thermal entropy all decrease. Whenever the superradiance finishes, the black hole turn out to be a neutral black hole and the Hawking radiation dominates. The Page curve can then be well reproduced.

Bridging the Chiral symmetry and Confinement with Singularity

We consider a holographic quark model where the confinement is a consequence of the quark condensate. Surprisingly, the equation of motion of our holographic model can be mapped to the old spin-less bag model. Both models correctly reproduce the linear Regge trajectory of hadrons for zero quark mass. For the case of non-zero quark mass, the model lead us to Heun's equation. The mass term is precisely the origin of the higher singularity, which changes the system behavior drastically. Our result can shed some light on why the chiral transition is so close to the confinement transition. In the massive case, the Schroedinger equation is exactly solvable, but only if a surprising new quantization condition, additional to the energy quantization, is applied.

Causality of black holes in 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory

We study charged black hole solutions in 4-dimensional (4D) Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory to the linearized perturbation level. We first compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. We then demonstrate how bulk causal structure analysis imposes a upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant in the AdS space. Causality constrains the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α_{GB}$ to be bounded by $α_{GB}\leq 0$ as $D\rightarrow 4$.

Chiral symmetry and Heun's equation

We show that the current quark mass should vanish to be consistent with the QCD color confinement: a bag model leads us to Heun's equation, which requests that not only the energy but also the string tension should be quantized. This is due to the presence of higher order singularity which requests higher regularity condition demanding that parameters of the theory should be related to one another. As a result, the Hadron spectrum is consistent with the Regge trajectory only when quark mass vanishes. Therefore, in this model, the chiral symmetry is a consequence of the confinement.

Determination of Dynamical exponents of Graphene at quantum critical point by holography

We calculate the transport of a theory with two conserved currents by holographic method and compare it with graphene data to determine its dynamical exponents $(z,θ)$ which characterizes a QCP. As a result, we find that the electric and the thermal conductivity data can be fit much more naturally if we assume $(z,θ)=(3/2,1)$ rather than $(1,0)$. Furthermore, we find that thermoelectric power data at high temperature can be fit if we use $(3/2,1)$ but not at all by $(1,0)$. The $θ=1$ result can be interpreted as taking into account the fermionic nature of the electrons and $z=3/2$ can be interpreted as the flattened band by the strong interaction.

Ginzberg-Landau-Wilson theory for Flat band, Fermi-arc and surface states of strongly correlated systems

We consider a holographic theory as a Ginzberg-Landau theory working for strongly interacting system near the quantum critical point: we take the bulk matter field $Φ^I(r,x)$, the dual of the fermion bilinear, as the order parameter. We calculate and classify the fermion spectral functions in the presence of such orders. Depending on the symmetry, we found spectral features like the gap, pseudo-gap, flat disk bands and the Fermi-arc connecting the two Dirac cones, which are familiar in Dirac material and Kondo lattice. Many of above features are associated with the zero modes whose presence is tied with a discrete symmetry of the interaction. The interaction induced zero modes either makes the strongly correlated system fermi-liquid like, or creates a disk-like flat band. Some of the order parameters in the bulk theory do not have an interpretation of symmetry breaking in terms of the boundary space, which opens the possibility of 'an order without symmetry breaking'.

New black holes with hyperscaling violation and transports of quantum critical points with magnetic impurity

We consider the magneto-transports of quantum matters doped with magnetic impurities near the quantum critical points(QCP). For this, we first find new black hole solution with hyper-scaling violation which is dual to such system. By considering the fluctuation near this exact solution, we calculated all transport coefficients using the holographic method. We applied our result to the surface state of the topological insulator with magnetic doping and found two QCP's, one bosonic and the other fermionic. It turns out that doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ correspond to different QCP's. We also investigated transports of QCP's as functions of physical parameters and found that there are phase transitions as well as crossovers from weak localization to weak anti-localization.

Quantization of the charge in Coulomb plus harmonic potential

We consider two models where the wave equation can be reduced to the effective Schrödinger equation whose potential contains both harmonic and the Coulomb terms, $ω^{2}r^{2}-a/r$. The equation reduces to the biconfluent Heun's equation, and we find that the charge as well as the energy must be quantized and state dependent. We also find that two quantum numbers are necessary to count radial degrees of freedom and suggest that this is a general feature of differential equation with higher singularity like the Heun's equation.

Stability of Topological character of Weyl Semi-metal, and Topological Dipole in Holography

We discuss the stability of the topological invariant of the strongly interacting Weyl semi-metal at finite temperature. We find that if the interactions and temperature of the system are controlled by the holography, the topology is stable even in the case the Fermi surface become fuzzy. We give an argument to show that although the self energy changes the spectral function significantly to make the Fermi surface fuzzy, it cannot change the singularity structure of the Berry phase, which leads to the stability of the topology. We also find that depending on the mass term structure of the fermion Lagrangian, topological dipoles can be created.

Holographic Spectral Functions with Momentum Relaxation

We study (fermionic) spectral functions in two holographic models, the Gubser-Rocha-linear axion model and the linear axion model, where translational symmetry is broken by axion fields linear to the boundary coordinates ($ψ_{I}=βδ_{Ii} x^{i}$). Here, $β$ corresponds to the strength of momentum relaxation. The spectral function is computed by the fermionic Green's function of the bulk Dirac equation, where a fermion mass, $m$, and a dipole coupling, $p$, are introduced as input parameters. By classifying the shape of spectral functions, we construct complete phase diagrams in ($m,p,β$) space for both models. We find that two phase diagrams are similar even though their background geometries are different. We also find that the effect of momentum relaxation on the (spectral function) phases of two models are similar even though the effect of momentum relaxation on the DC conductivities of two models are very different. We suspect that this is because holographic fermion does not back-react to geometry in our framework.

Quantum Correction to Chaos in Schwarzian Theory

We discuss the quantum correction to chaos in the Schwarzian theory. We carry out the semi-classical analysis of the Schwarzian theory to study Feynman diagrams of the Schwarzian soft mode. We evaluate the contribution of the soft mode to the out-of-time-order correlator up to order $\mathcal{O}(g^4)$. We show that the quantum correction of order $\mathcal{O}(g^4)$ by the soft mode decreases the maximum Lyapunov exponent $2π/ β$.

Entanglement String and Spin Liquid with Holographic Duality

We show that the quantum entanglement can be transmuted to a force using the holographic duality. First, we prove that there is an open string in the spectrum of the holographic fermion coupled with scalar. The string ends at two fermions and its tension vanishes in the limit of zero scalar condensation. We associate such string with a dimer and identify the scalar condensation as the degree of the dimerization. Together with divergently large entanglement entropy, the model is expected to describe the Spin Liquid. As a consistency check, we show that there is a Mott transition as the dimerization proceeds. We suggest that the string may be observed in an ARPES experiment of spin liquid or clean Dirac material as a tower of bands.

Character of Matter in Holography: Spin-Orbit Interaction

Gauge/Gravity duality as a theory of matter needs a systematic way to characterise a system. We suggest a `dimensional lifting' of the least irrelevant interaction to the bulk theory. As an example, we consider the spin-orbit interaction, which causes magneto-electric interaction term. We show that its lifting is an axionic coupling. We present an exact and analytic solution describing diamagnetic response. Experimental data on annealed graphite shows a remarkable similarity to our theoretical result. We also find an analytic formulas of DC transport coefficients, according to which, the anomalous Hall coefficient interpolates between the coherent metallic regime with $ρ_{xx}^{2}$ and incoherent metallic regime with $ρ_{xx}$ as we increase the disorder parameter $β$. The strength of the spin-orbit interaction also interpolates between the two scaling regimes.

Gauge Invariance and Holographic Renormalization

We study the gauge invariance of physical observables in holographic theories under the local diffeomorphism. We find that gauge invariance is intimately related to the holographic renormalisation: the local counter terms defined in the boundary cancel most of gauge dependences of the on-shell action as well as the divergences. There is a mismatch in the degrees of freedom between the bulk theory and the boundary one. We resolve this problem by noticing that there is a residual gauge symmetry(RGS). By extending the RGS such that it satisfies infalling boundary condition at the horizon, we can understand the problem in the context of general holographic embedding of a global symmetry at the boundary into the local gauge symmetry in the bulk.

Thermoelectric Conductivities at Finite Magnetic Field and the Nernst Effect

We study the thermoelectric conductivities of a strongly correlated system in the presence of a magnetic field by the gauge/gravity duality. We consider a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories with axion fields imposing momentum relaxation. General analytic formulas for the direct current(DC) conductivities and the Nernst signal are derived in terms of the black hole horizon data. For an explicit model study, we analyse in detail the dyonic black hole modified by momentum relaxation. In this model, for small momentum relaxation, the Nernst signal shows a bell-shaped dependence on the magnetic field, which is a feature of the normal phase of cuprates. We compute all alternating current(AC) electric, thermoelectric, and thermal conductivities by numerical analysis and confirm that their zero frequency limits precisely reproduce our analytic DC formulas, which is a non-trivial consistency check of our methods. We discuss the momentum relaxation effects on the conductivities including cyclotron resonance poles.

Thermoelectric conductivities, shear viscosity, and stability in an anisotropic linear axion model

We study thermoelectric conductivities and shear viscosities in a holographically anisotropic model, which is dual to a spatially anisotropic $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at finite chemical potential. Momentum relaxation is realized through perturbing the linear axion field. Ac conductivity exhibits a coherent/incoherent metal transition. Deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz law are also observed in our model. The longitudinal shear viscosity for prolate anisotropy violates the bound conjectured by Kovtun-Son-Starinets. We also find that thermodynamic and dynamical instabilities are not always equivalent by examining the Gubser-Mitra conjecture.

Variation of Entanglement Entropy in Scattering Process

In a scattering process, the final state is determined by an initial state and an S-matrix. We focus on two-particle scattering processes and consider the entanglement between these particles. For two types initial states; i.e., an unentangled state and an entangled one, we calculate perturbatively the change of entanglement entropy from the initial state to the final one. Then we show a few examples in a field theory and in quantum mechanics.

Anisotropic plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential

We present a type IIB supergravity solution dual to a spatially anisotropic $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential and finite temperature. The effective five-dimensional gravitational theory is a consistent Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-Axion truncation of the gauged supergravity. We obtain the solutions both numerically and analytically. We study the phase structure and thermodynamic instabilities of the solution, and find new instabilities independent of the renormalization scheme.

Anisotropic plasma with a chemical potential and scheme-independent instabilities

Generically, the black brane solution with planar horizons is thermodynamically stable. We find a counter-example to this statement by demonstrating that an anisotropic black brane is unstable. We present a charged black brane solution dual to a spatially anisotropic finite temperature $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential. This static and regular solution is obtained both numerically and analytically. We uncover rich thermodynamic phase structures for this system by considering the cases when the anisotropy constant "a" takes real and imaginary values, respectively. In the case $a^2>0$, the phase structure of this anisotropic black brane is similar to that of Schwarzschild-AdS black hole with $S^3$ horizon topology, yielding a thermodynamical instability at smaller horizon radii. For the condition $a^2\leq 0$, the thermodynamics is dominated by the black brane phase for all temperatures.

Coherent/incoherent metal transition in a holographic model

We study AC electric($σ$), thermoelectric($α$), and thermal($\barκ$) conductivities in a holographic model, which is based on 3+1 dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-scalar action. There is momentum relaxation due to massless scalar fields linear to spatial coordinate. The model has three field theory parameters: temperature($T$), chemical potential($μ$), and effective impurity($β$). At low frequencies, if $β< μ$, all three AC conductivities($σ, α, \barκ$) exhibit a Drude peak modified by pair creation contribution(coherent metal). The parameters of this modified Drude peak are obtained analytically. In particular, if $β\ll μ$ the relaxation time of electric conductivity approaches to $2\sqrt{3} μ/β^2$ and the modified Drude peak becomes a standard Drude peak. If $β> μ$ the shape of peak deviates from the Drude form(incoherent metal). At intermediate frequencies($T<ω<μ$), we have analysed numerical data of three conductivities($σ, α, \barκ$) for a wide variety of parameters, searching for scaling laws, which are expected from either experimental results on cuprates superconductors or some holographic models. In the model we study, we find no clear signs of scaling behaviour.

EPR = ER and Scattering Amplitude as Entanglement Entropy Change

We study the causal structure of the minimal surface of the four-gluon scattering, and find a world-sheet wormhole parametrized by Mandelstam variables, thereby demonstrate the EPR = ER relation for gluon scattering. We also propose that scattering amplitude is the change of the entanglement entropy by generalizing the holographic entanglement entropy of Ryu-Takayanagi to the case where two regions are divided in space-time.

A New Model of Holographic QCD and Chiral Condensate in Dense Matter

We consider the model of holographic QCD with asymptotic freedom and gluon condensation in its vacuum. It consists of the color D4-branes and D0-branes as a background and the flavor D8-branes as a probe. By taking a specific field theory limit, the effective coupling decreases to vanish in UV region. We then introduce the uniformly distributed baryons in terms of the baryon vertices and study the density dependence of chiral condensate, which is evaluated using the worldsheet instanton method. In the confined phase, the chiral condensate as a function of density monotonically decreases in high baryon density. Such behavior is in agreement with the expectation, while in extremely low density it increases. We attribute this anomaly to the incorrect approximation of uniformity in very low density. In the deconfined phase the chiral condensate monotonically decreases in the whole region of density.

Impurity effect in a holographic superconductor

We consider a holographic superconductor with homogeneous impurities added. We start with the holographic Abelian-Higgs model for s-wave superconductivity, and turn on a coupling between the gauge field and a new massive gauge field that is introduced for impurities, whose effect is examined in the probe limit. We find that the condensation of the massive gauge field is induced in the superconducting phase. When the coupling is sufficiently large, the mass gap in the optical conductivity disappears. A resonance peak is found in the conductivity for the massive vector field.

Non-spherical collapse in AdS and Early Thermalization in RHIC

In the flat space, non-spherical shells collapse to give globular cluster after many oscillations. We show that in anti de sitter space, they form black holes in one dynamical time. We propose that this is the mechanism of early thermalization in strong quark-gluon plasma in gravity dual. This is traced back to the a remarkable property of AdS : the period in radial motion is amplitude independent in spite of the NON-linearity of the equation of motion. We investigate the interaction effect numerically and observe the same qualitative behavior for the attractive forces. For repulsive interactions, particles halt at a small but finite radius for long time due to the specific structure of the bulk AdS propagator. It helps hair creation in the AdS black hole.

Self-energy of Strongly Interacting Fermions in Medium: a Holographic Approach

We consider the self-energy of strongly interacting fermions in the medium using gauge/gravity duality of $D4/D8$ system. We study the mass generation of the thermal and/or dense medium and the collective excitation called plasmino, by considering the spectral function of fermion and its dispersion relation. Our results are very different from those of the hard thermal loop method: for zero density, there is no thermal mass or plasmino in any phase. Plasmino in deconfined phase is not allowed in $D4/D8$ set up. In the confined phase, there is plasmino modes only for a window of density.

Stable and flexible system for glucose homeostasis

Pancreatic islets, controlling glucose homeostasis, consist of α, β, and δ cells. It has been observed that α and β cells generate out-of-phase synchronization in the release of glucagon and insulin, counter-regulatory hormones for increasing and decreasing glucose levels, while β and δ cells produce in-phase synchronization in the release of the insulin and somatostatin. Pieces of interactions between the islet cells have been observed for a long time, although their physiological role as a whole has not been explored yet. We model the synchronized hormone pulses of islets with coupled phase oscillators that incorporate the observed cellular interactions. The integrated model shows that the interaction from β to δ cells, of which sign has controversial reports, should be positive to reproduce the in-phase synchronization between β and δ cells. The model also suggests that δ cells help the islet system flexibly respond to changes of glucose environment.

Symmetry Energy from Holographic QCD

We review the symmetry energy in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. After constructing $D$ brane configurations corresponding to dense system in boundary theory, we calculate the symmetry energy by solving DBI action of $D$ branes in confining and deconfining phase. We conclude the density dependence of the symmetry energy has scaling law whose power depends only on dimensionality of the branes and space-time.

The physical mechanism of AdS instability and Holographic Thermalization

Gravitational falling in AdS has two characteristic properties \cite{ohsin}: i) A thick shell becomes a thin shell. ii) Any shape become spherical. Such focusing character of AdS, for the collapse of dusts, leads to the rapid thermalization mechanism in strongly interacting system. For the collapse of a wave, it explains the cascade of energy to UV through repeated bounces, which has been extensively discussed in recent numerical works. Therefore the focusing is the physical mechanism of instability of AdS. Such sharp contrast between the dust and wave in collapse, together with the experimental observation of rapid thermalization, suggest that the initial condition of created particles in RHIC is in a state with random character rather than a coherent one. Two time scales, one for thermalization and the other for hydro-nization are defined and calculated in terms of the total mass density and energy distribution of the initial particles. We find $t_{th}\sim (1-c_1/E^2)^{1/2}/T $ so that softer modes thermalize earlier. However, for hydro-nization, $t_{hyd} \sim 1/E^{2/3}T^{1/3}$ therefore harder modes come earlier. We also show that near horizon limit of Dp brane solutions have similar focusing effect which is enough to guarantee the early thermalization.

Thermal Mass and Plasmino for Strongly Interacting Fermions

We investigate fermion self energy problem in the strongly coupled dense medium in holographic approach. By working out bottom up models as well as top down ones we showed that vanishing thermal mass and non-existence of temperature generated plasmino mode is the universal feature of the strongly interacting fermion system. We identified that the dual of the bulk Rashiba effect, which was recently found by the Herzog et.al, is the presence of the plasmino mode generated by the density.

Chiral Condensate in Holographic QCD with Baryon Density

We consider the chiral condensate in the baryonic dense medium using the generalized Sakai-Sugimoto model. It is defined as the vacuum expectation value of open Wilson line that is proposed to be calculated by use of the area of world-sheet instanton. We evaluate it in confined as well as deconfined phase. In both phases, the chiral condensate has a minimum as a function of baryon density. In the deconfined phase, taking into account the chiral symmetry restoration, we classify the behavior of chiral condensate into three types. One can set the parameter of the theory such that the results, in low but sufficiently higher density, is in agreement with the expectation from QCD.

Holographic Instanton Liquid and chiral transition

In the presence of uniform D-instanton charges, quarks can be confined although gluons are not, because baryon vertices are allowed due to the net repulsive force on the on the probe D-branes. Since there is no scale in the geometry itself apart from the horizon size, there is no Hawking-Page transition. As a consequence, the D7 brane embedding can encode the effect of the the finite temperature as well as finite baryon density even for low temperature. The probe D-brane embedding, however, undergoes a chiral phase transition according to the temperature and density parameter. We studied such phase transitions and calculated the constituent quark mass, chiral condensation and the binding energy of baryons as function of the density. The baryon vertex melting is identified as the quark deconfinement. We draw phase diagram according to these transitions.

Holographic RG Flow and Sound Modes of sQGP

We consider the hydrodynamics of strongly interacting quark gluon plasma in finite temperature and density using the holographic duality of charged black hole in anti DeSitter space. We calculate the transport coefficients at arbitrary energy scale by considering the holographic screen at finite radial position. We first calculate the flow of sound velocity in this method and check the consistence with previous result. Then we calculate diffusion constant of charge and find that Einstein relation between susceptibility, conductivity and diffusion constant will hold at arbitrary slice.

Phases of a holographic QCD with gluon condensation at finite Temperature and Density

We study the phase diagram of a holographic QCD using the probe D7 brane in black D3 geometry with finite D-instanton charge. Due to quasi-confining nature of the geometry, baryon vertex can exist outside the horizon so that we can find D7 brane embeddings with finite baryon density and finite chiral condensation as well as an embedding where only quarks are possible but chiral condensation can be zero or non-zero. We study the phase transition and phase diagram between these phases. We also calculated constituent quark mass and binding energy of baryons as fucntion of the density.

Symmetry Energy and Universality classes of holographic QCD

We study nuclear symmetry energy of dense matter using holographic QCD. We calculate it in a various holographic QCD models and show that the scaling index of the symmetry energy in dense medium is almost invariant under the smooth deformation of the metric as well as the embedding shape of the probe brane. We find that the scaling index depends only on the dimensionality of the branes and space-time. Therefore the scaling index of the symmetry energy characterizes the universality classes of holographic QCD models. We suggest that the scaling index might be also related to the non-fermi liquid behavior of the interacting nucleons.

The Baryonic Phase in Holographic Descriptions of the QCD Phase Diagram

We study holographic models of the QCD temperature-chemical potential phase diagram based on the D3/D7 system with chiral symmetry breaking. The baryonic phase may be included through linked D5-D7 systems. In a previous analysis of a model with a running gauge coupling a baryonic phase was shown to exist to arbitrarily large chemical potential. Here we explore this phase in a more generic phenomenological setting with a step function dilaton profile. The change in dilaton generates a linear confining $\bar{q}q$ potential and opposes the screening effect of temperature. We show that the persistence of the baryonic phase depends on the step size and that QCD-like phase diagrams can be described. The baryonic phase's existence is qualitatively linked to the existence of confinement in Wilson loop computations in the background.

Cold Dense Baryonic Matter and Compact Stars

Probing dense hadronic matter is thus far an uncharted field of physics. Here we give a brief summary of the highlights of what has been so far accomplished and what will be done in the years ahead by the World Class University III Project at Hanyang University in the endeavor to unravel and elucidate the multifacet of the cold dense baryonic matter existing in the interior of the densest visible stable object in the Universe, i.e., neutron stars, strangeness stars and/or quark stars, from a modest and simplified starting point of an effective field theory modeled on the premise of QCD as well as from a gravity dual approach of hQCD. The core of the matter of our research is the possible origin of the $\sim 99%$ of the proton mass that is to be accounted for and how the "vacuum" can be tweaked so that the source of the mass generation can be uncovered by measurements made in terrestrial as well as space laboratories. Some of the issues treated in the program concern what can be done - both theoretically and experimentally - in anticipation of what's to come for basic physics research in Korea.

Holographic meson mass in asymmetric dense matter

We study a meson mass splitting due to isospin violation in holographic dense matter. We work in a D4/D6/D6 model with two quark flavor branes to consider asymmetric dense matter in holographic QCD. We mainly consider two cases. We first consider $m^+/m^-\sim m_d/m_u$ to study the effect of isospin violation on the meson masses. Then, we take $m^+/m^-\sim m_s/m_q$, where $m_q\sim(m_u+m_d)/2$, to calculate in-medium kaon-like meson masses. In both cases we observe that the mass splitting of charged mesons occurs at low densities due to the asymmetry, while at high densities their masses become degenerate. At intermediate densities, we find an exotic behavior in masses which could be partly understood in a simple picture based on the Pauli exclusion principle.

Holographic mesons in D4/D6 model revisited

We revisit holographic mesons in the D4/D6 model to study holographic light vector mesons and the properties of heavy quarkonium in confining and deconfining phases. To treat the light mesons and heavy quarkonium on the same footing, we use the same compactification scale MKK in both systems. We observe that like scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons the vector meson mass is linearly proportional to the square root of the quark mass, when the quark mass is large. With a MKK fixed by light meson masses, we calculate the mass of heavy quarkonium in confining and deconfining phases. We also obtain the inmedium dispersion relation for heavy quarkonium, which is important to understand the dissociation and the screening mass of heavy quarkonium in quark-gluon plasma.

Holographic Wilsonian RG Flow and Sliding Membrane Paradigm

We study the relations between two different approaches to the holographic Renormalization Group (RG) flow at the dual gravity level: One is the radial evolution of the classical equation of motion and the other is the flow equation given by the holographic Wilsonian RG coming from the cut off independence. Apparently, the two flows look different. We give general proofs that the two flows are actually equivalent. The role of the momentum continuity (MC) is essential. We show that MC together with cutoff independence gives the evolution equation of the boundary values. Equivalence of conductivity flows in two paradigm has been shown as an explicit example. We also get the connecting formula of Green functions and AC conductivity at arbitrary slice in terms of its value at horizon for various geometry backgrounds.

Mixed RG Flows and Hydrodynamics at Finite Holographic Screen

We consider quark-gluon plasma with chemical potential and study renormalization group flows of transport coefficients in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. We first study them using the flow equations and compare the results with hydrodynamic results by calculating the Green functions on the arbitrary slice. Two results match exactly. Transport coefficients at arbitrary scale is ontained by calculating hydrodynamics Green functions. When either momentum or charge vanishes, transport coefficients decouple from each other.

RG flow of transport quantities

The RG flow equation of various transport quantities are studied in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, in the fixed as well as fluctuating background geometry both for the Maxwellian and DBI type of actions. The regularity condition on the flow equation of the conductivity at the horizon for the DBI action reproduces naturally the leading order result of {\it Hartnoll et al.}, [{\it JHEP}, {\bf 04}, 120 (2010)]. Motivated by the result of {\it van der Marel et al.}, [{\it science}, {\bf 425}, 271 (2003], we studied, analytically, the conductivity versus frequency plane by dividing it into three distinct parts: $ω<T, ω>T$ and $ω>> T$. In order to compare, we choose 3+1 dimensional bulk spacetime for the computation of the conductivity. In the $ω<T$ range, the conductivity does not show up the Drude like form in any spacetime dimensions. In the $ω> T$ range and staying away from the horizon, for the DBI action with unit dynamical exponent, non-zero magnetic field and charge density, the conductivity goes as $ω^{-2/3}$, whereas the phase of the conductivity, goes as, $ArcTan(Imσ^{xx}/Reσ^{xx})=π/6$ and $ArcTan(Imσ^{xy}/Reσ^{xy})=-π/3$. There exists a universal quantity at the horizon that is the phase angle of conductivity, which either vanishes or an integral multiple of $π$. Furthermore, we calculate the temperature dependence to the thermoelectric and the thermal conductivity at the horizon. The charge diffusion constant for the DBI action is studied.

The Dropping of In-Medium Hadron Mass in Holographic QCD

We study the baryon density dependence of the vector meson spectrum using the D4/D6 system together with the compact D4 baryon vertex. We find that the vector meson mass decreases almost linearly in density at low density for small quark mass, but saturates to a finite non-zero value for large density. We also compute the density dependence of the $η\prime$ mass and the $η\prime$ velocity. We find that in medium, our model is consistent with the GMOR relation up to a few times the normal nuclear density. We compare our hQCD predictions with predictions made based on hidden local gauge theory that is constructed to model QCD.

Acoustic black holes for relativistic fluids

We derive a new acoustic black hole metric from the Abelian Higgs model. In the non-relativistic limit, while the Abelian Higgs model becomes the Ginzburg-Landau model, the metric reduces to an ordinary Unruh type. We investigate the possibility of using (type I and II) superconductors as the acoustic black holes. We propose to realize experimental acoustic black holes by using spiral vortices solutions from the Navier-stokes equation in the non-relativistic classical fluids.

Hydrodynamics of RN AdS$_4$ black hole and Holographic Optics

We consider the AdS$_4$ RN black hole and work out the momentum dependent hydrodynamic analysis for the vector modes. We also perform the spectral function calculation of the dual field theory. As an application, we consider the permittivity and permeability and find that for low frequency regime, the index of refraction is found to be negative, supporting the claim made in ref.\cite{amariti} for AdS$_5$. We also find that at static limit the medium has the zero permeability, a character of the superconductivity .

Magnetic conductivity and Chern-Simons Term in Holographic Hydrodynamics of Charged AdS Black Hole

We study the effects of the Chern-Simons term in the hydrodynamics of the five-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS background. We work out the decoupling problem of the equations of motion and calculate the retarded Green functions explicitly. We then find that the Chern-Simons term induces the magnetic conductivity caused by the anomaly effect. It is increasing function of temperature running from a non-zero value at zero temperature to the twice the value at infinite temperature.

Photo-emission rate of sQGP at finite density

We calculate the thermal spectral function of SYM plasma with finite density using holographic technique. We take the RN-AdS black hole as the dual gravity theory. In the presence of charge, vector modes of gravitational and electromagnetic perturbation are coupled with each other. By introducing master variables for these modes, we solve the coupled system and calculate spectral function. We also calculated photoemission rate of SYM plasma from spectral function for light like momentum, AC conductivity and their density dependence. The suppression of the conductivity in high density is noticed, which might be yet another mechanism for the Jet quenching phenomena in RHIC experiment.

A Dual Geometry of the Hadron in Dense Matter

We identify the dual geometry of the hadron phase of dense nuclear matter and investigate the confinement/deconfinement phase transition. We suggest that the low temperature phase of the RN black hole with the full backreaction of the bulk gauge field is described by the zero mass limit of the RN black hole with hard wall. We calculated the density dependence of critical temperature and found that the phase diagram closes. We also study the density dependence of the rho meson mass.

Dense QCD: a Holographic Dyonic Salt

Dense QCD at zero temperature with a large number of colors is a crystal. We show that in the holographic dual description, the crystal is made out of pairs of dyons with $e=g=\pm 1$ charges in a salt-like arrangement. We argue that with increasing density the dyon masses and topological charges equalize, turning the salt-like configuration to a bcc of half-instantons. The latter is dual to a cubic crystal of half-skyrmions. We estimate the transition from an fcc crystal of instantons to a bcc crystal of dyons to about 3 times nuclear matter density with a dyon binding energy of about 180 MeV.

Density driven symmetry breaking and Butterfly effect in holographic superconductors

We study the density driven symmetry breaking in holographic superconductors by considering the positive mass squared case. We show that even for the positive $m^2$, a scalar condensation still forms, provided the chemical potential is high enough. As $m^2$ increases, the phase space folds due to the non-linearity of the equations of motion, and two nearby points in the phase space can represent symmetry breaking and preserving configurations respectively. The phase space defined by the set of initial conditions of field variables at the horizon undergoes a non-linear radial evolution to result in the phase space folding, a characteristic phenomenon in a non-linear system. We then calculate the specific heat, which characterizes superconductors and has been measured in experiments. We observe a discontinuity in the specific heat at the transition point and compare our results with experimentally observed numbers. The electrical conductivity for various $m^2$ is also calculated.

Holographic Hadrons in a Confining Finite Density Medium

We study a sector of the hadron spectrum in the presence of finite baryon density. We use a non-supersymmetric gravity dual to a confining guage theory which exhibits a running dilaton. The interaction of mesons with the finite density medium is encoded in the dual theory by a force balancing between flavor D7-branes and a baryon vertex provided by a wrapped D5-brane. When the current quark mass m_q is sufficiently large, the meson mass reduces, exhibiting an interesting spectral flow as we increase the baryon density while it has a more complicated behaviour for very small m_q.

Holographic QCD in medium: a bottom up approach

A holographic dual of hadrons at finite density is considered. We use the zero black-hole mass limit of Reisner-Nordstrom (RN) AdS background with hard wall to describe a confining background with finite quark density. We calculate density-dependence of meson masses and decay constants. In our model, pion decay constant and its velocity go down but all the meson masses go up as density grows.

Nuclear matter to strange matter transition in holographic QCD

We construct a simple holographic QCD model to study nuclear matter to strange matter transition. The interaction of dense medium and hadrons is taken care of by imposing the force balancing condition for stable D4/D6/D6 configuration. By considering the intermediate and light flavor branes interacting with baryon vertex homogeneously distributed along R^3 space and requesting the energy minimization, we find that there is a well defined transition density as a function of current quark mass. We also find that as density goes up very high, intermediate (or heavy) and light quarks populate equally as expected from the Pauli principle. In this sense, the effect of the Pauli principle is realized as dynamics of D-branes.

Shear viscosity, instability and the upper bound of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant

We compute the dimensionality dependence of $η/s$ for charged black branes with Gauss-Bonnet correction. We find that both causality and stability constrain the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant to be bounded by 1/4 in the infinite dimensionality limit. We further show that higher dimensionality stabilize the gravitational perturbation. The stabilization of the perturbation in higher dimensional space-time is a straightforward consequence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant bound.

The effect of gluon condensate on holographic heavy quark potential

The gluon condensate is very sensitive to the QCD deconfinement transition since its value changes drastically with the deconfinement transition. We calculate the gluon condensate dependence of the heavy quark potential in AdS/CFT to study how the property of the heavy quarkonium is affected by a relic of the deconfinement transition. We observe that the heavy quark potential becomes deeper as the value of the gluon condensate decreases. We interpret this as a dropping of the heavy quarkonium mass just above the deconfinement transition, which is similar to the results obtained from QCD sum rule and from a bottom-up AdS/QCD model.

Baryon Mass in medium with Holographic QCD

We study the baryon vertex (BV) in the presence of medium using DBI action and the force balance condition between BV and the probe branes. We note that a stable BV configuration exists only in some of the confining backgrounds. For the system of finite density, the issue is whether there is a canonical definition for the baryon mass in the medium. In this work, we define it as the energy of the deformed BV satisfying the force balance condition (FBC) with the probe brane. With FBC, lengths of the strings attached to the BV tend to be zero while the compact branes are enlongated to mimic the string. We attribute the deformation energy of the probe brane to the baryon-baryon interaction. We show that for a system with heavy quarks the baryon mass drops monotonically as a function of density while it has minimum in case of light quark system.

Viscosity Bound, Causality Violation and Instability with Stringy Correction and Charge

Recently, it has been shown that if we consider the higher derivative correction, the viscosity bound conjectured to be $η/s=1/4π$ is violated and so is the causality. In this paper, we consider medium effect and the higher derivative correction simultaneously by adding charge and Gauss-Bonnet terms. We find that the viscosity bound violation is not changed by the charge. However, we find that two effects together create another instability for large momentum regime. We argue the presence of tachyonic modes and show it numerically. The stability of the black brane requires the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $λ$($=2α'/l^2$) to be smaller than 1/24. We draw a phase diagram relevant to the instability in charge-coupling space.

A Gravity Dual of RHIC Collisions

In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the gravity dual of a heavy-ion-like collision in a variant of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. We provide a gravity dual picture of the entire process using a model where the scattering process creates initially a holographic shower in bulk AdS. The subsequent gravitational fall leads to a moving black hole that is gravity dual to the expanding and cooling heavy-ion fireball. The front of the fireball cools at the rate of $1/τ$, while the core cools as $1/\sqrtτ$ from a cosmological-like argument. The cooling is faster than Bjorken cooling. The fireball freezes when the dual black hole background is replaced by a confining background through the Hawking-Page transition.

A New Phase at Finite Quark Density from AdS/CFT

We explore phases of N=2 super Yang-Mills theory at finite quark density by introducing quark chemical potential in a D3-D7 setup. We formulate the thermodynamics of brane embeddings and find that we need to renormalize the finite chemical potential due to the divergence of the thermodynamic potentials and we find that the density versus chemical potential equation of state has rich structure. This yields two distinct first order phase transitions in a small window of quark density. In order words, there is a new first order phase transition in the region of deconfined quarks. In this new phase, the chemical potential is a decreasing function of the density. We suggest that this might be relevant to the difference in sQGP--wQGP phases of QCD.

Closed string tachyon potential and $tt^*$ equation

Recently Dabholkar and Vafa proposed that closed string tachyon potential for non-supersymmetric orbifold $\C/\Z_3$ in terms of the solution of a $tt^*$ equation. We extend this result to $\C^2/\Z_n$ for $n=3,4,5$. Interestingly, the tachyon potentials for $n=3$ and 4 are still given in terms of the solutions of Painleve III type equation that appeared in the study of $\C^1/\Z_3$ with different boundary conditions. For $\C^2/\Z_5$ case, governing equations are of generalized Toda type. The potential is monotonically decreasing function of RG flow.

Comments on the Fate of unstable orbifolds

We study the localized tachyon condensation in their mirror Landau-Ginzburg picture. We completely determine the decay mode of an unstable orbifold $C^r/Z_n$, $r=1,2,3$ under the condensation of a tachyon with definite R-charge and mass by extending the Vafa's work hep-th/0111105. Here, we give a simple method that works uniformly for all $C^r/Z_n$. For $C^2/Z_n$, where method of toric geometry works, we give a proof of equivalence of our method with toric one. For $C^r/Z_n$ cases, the orbifolds decay into sum of $r$ far separated orbifolds.

A note on singular D-branes in group manifolds

After reviewing D-branes as conjugacy classes and various charge quantizations (modulo $k$) in WZW model, we develop the classification and systematic construction of all possible untwisted D-branes in Lie groups of A-D-E series. D-branes are classified according to their positions in the maximal torus. The moduli space of D-branes is naturally identified with a unit cell in the weight space which is exponentiated to be the maximal torus. However, for the D-brane classification, one may consider only the fundamental Weyl domain that is surrounded by the hyperplanes defined by Weyl reflections. We construct all the D-branes by the method of iterative deletion in the Dynkin diagram. The dimension of a D-brane always becomes an even number and it reduces as we go from a generic point of the fundamental domain to its higher co-dimensional boundaries. Quantum mechanical stability requires that only D-branes at discrete positions are allowed.

Classification and Quantum Moduli Space of D-branes in Group Manifolds

We study the classification of D-branes in all compact Lie groups including non-simply-laced ones. We also discuss the global structure of the quantum moduli space of the D-branes. D-branes are classified according to their positions in the maximal torus. We describe rank 2 cases, namely $B_2$, $C_2$, $G_2$, explicitly and construct all the D-branes in $B_r$, $C_r$, $F_4$ by the method of iterative deletion in the Dynkin diagram. The discussion of moduli space involves global issues that can be treated in terms of the exact homotopy sequence and various lattices. We also show that singular D-branes can exist at quantum mechanical level.

Condensation of Localized Tachyons and Spacetime Supersymmetry

We consider condensation of localized closed string tachyons by examining the recent proposal of Harvey, Kutasov, Martinec, and Moore. We first observe that the $g_{\rm cl}$ defined by HKMM does not reflect the space-time supersymmetry when the model has the SUSY. Especially for ${\bf C}^2/{\bf Z}_N$ models, $g_{\rm cl}$ defined by them is highly peaked along the supersymmetric points in the space of orbifolds, which is unsatisfactory property of the "potential" of the RG-flow. We give the modified definition of the $g_{\rm cl}$ in type II cases such that it has a valley along the supersymmetric points in the orbifold moduli space. New definition predicts that the processes suggested by Adams, Polchinski and Silverstein and was argued to be forbidden by HKMM are in fact allowed.

Orientifold in Conifold and Quantum Deformation

We describe orientifold operation defining O3 plane in the conifold background by deriving it from that of O4 plane in the Type IIA brane construction by T-duality. We find that both $O3^+$ and $O3^-$ are at the tip of the cone so that there is no net untwisted RR charge. RG analysis shows that we need two `fractional' branes for the conformal invariance in orientifolded conifold. We argue that the gravity solution is the same as Klebanov and Tsyetlin since SUGRA cannot distinguish the orientifolds and D branes in this case. We describe the duality cascade as well as the quantum deformation of the moduli space of the field theory in the presence of the orientifold. The finitely resolved conifold does not allow the orientifold, while deformed conifold leaves us an unresolved issue on supersymmetry.

Wilson Loop and Dimensional Reduction in Non-Commutative Gauge Theories

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we study UV behavior of Wilson loops in various noncommutative gauge theories. We get an area law in most cases and try to identify its origin. In D3 case, we may identify the the origin as the D1 dominance over the D3: as we go to the boundary of the AdS space, the effect of the flux of the D3 charge is highly suppressed, while the flux due to the D1 charge is enhenced. So near the boundary the theory is more like a theory on D1 brane than that on D3 brane. This phenomena is closely related to the dimensional reduction due to the strong magnetic field in the charged particle in the magnetic field. The linear potential is not due to the confinement by IR effect but is the analogue of Coulomb's potential in 1+1 dimension.

Phases of the Brans-Dicke Cosmology with Matter

We study the cosmology of the Brans-Dicke theory with perfect fluid type matter. In our previous work, we found exact solutions for any Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ and for general parameter $γ$ of equation of state. In this paper we further study the cosmology of these solutions by analyzing them according to their asymptotic behaviors. The cosmology is classified into 19 phases according to the values of $γ$ and $ω$. The effect of the cosmological constant to the Brans-Dicke theory is a particular case of our model. We give plot of time evolution of the scale factor by numerical investigations. We also give a comparison of the solutions for the theories with and without matter.

p-Branes and Exact solutions in Brans-Dicke cosmology with matter

We study the effect of the solitonic degree of freedom in string cosmology following the line of Rama. The gas of solitonic p-brane is treated as a perfect fluid in a Brans-Dicke type theory. In this paper, we find analytic solutions for a few solvable cases of equation of states with general Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ and study the cosmology of the solutions. In some cases the solutions are free from initial singularity.

Superpotentials of N=1 Supersymmetric Gauge Theories from M-theory

We consider brane configurations in M-theory describing N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories and using the parametric representation of the brane configurations, we calculate the superpotentials for various cases including multiple gauge groups or fermions. For SU(n) N=1 SQCD with $N_f$ fermion case ($N_f < N_c)$, we find that the superpotential from M-theory and the gauge theory agree precisely. This gives a direct evidence of the validity of Witten's M-theory method for calculating the super potential.

Late time Cosmological Phase Transition and Galactic Halo as Bose-liquid

We consider the ultra light pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson appearing in the late time cosmological phase transition theories as a dark matter candidate. Since it is almost massless, its nature is more wave like than particle like. Hence we apply quantum mechanics to study how they form the galactic halos. Three predictions are made; (1)the mass profile $ρ\sim r^{-1.6}$, (2)there are ripple-like fine structures in rotation curve, (3) the rotation velocity times ripple's wave length is largely galaxy independent. We compare the rotation curves predicted by our theory with the data observed.
