Quasi-Normal Modes and Nonlinear Electrodynamics in Black Hole Phase Transitions

We investigate the connection between thermodynamic phase transitions and quasi-normal modes (QNMs) in charged black holes with a positive curvature constant, within the framework of $F(R)$-Euler-Heisenberg gravity. Nonlinear electromagnetic fields lead to rich thermodynamic phase structures and significantly affect the QNMs of massless scalar fields. By analyzing the QNMs spectrum, we find that the transition point marking the disappearance of the divergence in the QNMs slope parameter $K$ aligns with the change of the thermodynamic phase structure described by the heat capacity, within the bounds of computational uncertainty. This precise matching holds under variations of the curvature parameter and charge. Furthermore, we show that larger angular quantum number $l$ diminishes this correspondence, while higher overtone number $n$ restores it beyond a threshold. These findings demonstrate that thermodynamic phase transitions of black holes carry embedded dynamical information, uncovering a fundamental link between black hole thermodynamic and dynamical properties.

Circular Motion of Charged Particles near Charged Black Hole

We study the circular motion of charged particles near a charged black hole. The general form of the Lyapunov exponent of charged particles is obtained by using the Jacobian matrix. The results show that the chaos bound can be saturated by the circular motion of charged particles on the horizon. By further expanding the Lyapunov exponent near the horizon and investigating Reissner-Nordström(RN) black holes with different $M/Q$, we find that in contrast to the static equilibrium, the circular motion of charged particles can have a larger Lyapunov exponent due to the existence of angular momentum. For the RN black holes which have the mass-charge ratio $1<M/Q <1.1547$, the chaos bound is locally violated by the null and the time-like circular motion with large angular momentum. As an illustration of the universality of our results, we study the charged particles' circular motion near the Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole and find that the null and the time-like circular motion with large angular momentum can exceed the chaos bound under the background of RN-AdS black holes with the mass-charge ratio in the range $1.23132<M/Q<1.75225$.

Island, Page Curve and Superradiance of Rotating BTZ Black Holes

We study the Page curve and the information paradox for the BTZ black hole coupled to two thermal baths by applying the island paradigm. We prove that as the island locates outside the event horizon, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation for finite temperature black holes obeys the Page curve. However, for extremal rotating black holes, the Page time and the scrambling time become divergent. To avoid the ill-defined of the Page time, we consider the contribution of superradiance, which is a process that can extract rotational energy from black holes. The superradiance continues in a period much shorter than the Page time when the central charge $c$ is not too large. In this process, the Page time, the scrambling time and the black hole thermal entropy all decrease. Whenever the superradiance finishes, the black hole turn out to be a neutral black hole and the Hawking radiation dominates. The Page curve can then be well reproduced.

Scrambling time for analogue black holes embedded in AdS space

We propose a gedanken experiment on realizing thermofield double state (TFD) by using analog black holes and provide an approach to test the scrambling time. Through this approach, we demonstrate clearly how shock wave changes the TFD state as time evolves. As the whole system evolves forward in time, the perturbation of space-time geometry will increase exponentially. Finally, it will destroy the entanglement between the two states of the thermal field, and the mutual information between them is reduced to zero in the time scale of scrambling. The results show that for perturbations of analogue black holes embedded in AdS space, the scale of the scrambling time is closely related to the logarithm of entropy of the black hole. The results provide further theoretical argument for the scrambling time, which can be further falsified in experiments.

Toward the nonequilibrium thermodynamic analog of complexity and the Jarzynski identity

The Jarzynski identity can describe small-scale nonequilibrium systems through stochastic thermodynamics. The identity considers fluctuating trajectories in a phase space. The complexity geometry frames the discussions on quantum computational complexity using the method of Riemannian geometry, which builds a bridge between optimal quantum circuits and classical geodesics in the space of unitary operators. Complexity geometry enables the application of the methods of classical physics to deal with pure quantum problems. By combining the two frameworks, i.e., the Jarzynski identity and complexity geometry, we derived a complexity analog of the Jarzynski identity using the complexity geometry. We considered a set of geodesics in the space of unitary operators instead of the trajectories in a phase space. The obtained complexity version of the Jarzynski identity strengthened the evidence for the existence of a well-defined resource theory of uncomplexity and presented an extensive discussion on the second law of complexity. Furthermore, analogous to the thermodynamic fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we proposed a version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for the complexity. Although this study does not focus on holographic fluctuations, we found that the results are surprisingly suitable for capturing their information. The results obtained using nonequilibrium methods may contribute to understand the nature of the complexity and study the features of the holographic fluctuations.

Analogue of the pole-skipping phenomenon in acoustic black holes

The pole-skipping phenomenon is a special property of the retarded Green's function of black hole perturbations. We turn to its analog in acoustic black holes, which may relate to experiments. The frequencies of these special points are located at negative integer (imaginary) Matsubara frequencies $ω=-i2πTn$, which are consistent with the imaginary frequencies of quasinormal modes (QNMs). This implies that the lower-half plane pole-skipping phenomena have the same physical meaning as the imaginary part of QNMs, which represents the dissipation of perturbation of acoustic black holes and is related to the instability time scale of perturbation.

Page Curves and Islands in Charged Dilaton Black Holes

We study the Page curve in the four dimensional asymptotically flat eternal Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger dilaton black holes by applying the "quantum extremal surface" prescription. The results demonstrate that without island, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation is proportional to time and divergent at late times. While taking account of the emergence of the island extending slightly outside the event horizon, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation stops growing and eventually reaches a saturation value, which is twice of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and consistent with the finiteness of the von Neumann entropy of eternal black holes. Moreover, we discuss the impact of the parameter $n$ and charge $Q$ on the Page time. The influence of $n$ on it can neglected when the ratio of the charge $Q$ to the black hole mass $M$ is sufficiently small, but the charge $Q$ has a significant impact on Page time. Importantly, at the extremal case, the Page time becomes divergent or vanishing, in which the semiclassical theory needs further investigation.

Superconducting gap ratio from strange metal phase in the absence of quasiparticles

A lattice model for strongly interacting electrons motivated by a rank-3 tensor model provides a tool for understanding the pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. This SYK-like model describes the strange metal phase in the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Our calculation indicates that the superconducting gap ratio in this model is higher than the ratio in the BCS theory due to the coupling term and the spin operator. Under certain conditions, the ratio also agrees with the BCS theory. Our results relate to the case of strong coupling, so it may pave the way to gaining insight into the cuprate high temperature superconductors.

Causality of black holes in 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory

We study charged black hole solutions in 4-dimensional (4D) Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory to the linearized perturbation level. We first compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. We then demonstrate how bulk causal structure analysis imposes a upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant in the AdS space. Causality constrains the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α_{GB}$ to be bounded by $α_{GB}\leq 0$ as $D\rightarrow 4$.

New black holes with hyperscaling violation and transports of quantum critical points with magnetic impurity

We consider the magneto-transports of quantum matters doped with magnetic impurities near the quantum critical points(QCP). For this, we first find new black hole solution with hyper-scaling violation which is dual to such system. By considering the fluctuation near this exact solution, we calculated all transport coefficients using the holographic method. We applied our result to the surface state of the topological insulator with magnetic doping and found two QCP's, one bosonic and the other fermionic. It turns out that doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ correspond to different QCP's. We also investigated transports of QCP's as functions of physical parameters and found that there are phase transitions as well as crossovers from weak localization to weak anti-localization.

On the geometry outside of acoustic black holes in $2+1$-dimensional spacetime

Analogue black holes, which can mimic the kinetic aspects of real black holes, have been proposed for many years. The growth of the radial momentum of test particles toward the acoustic horizon is calculated for acoustic black holes in flat and curved spacetimes. Surprisingly, for a freely infalling vortex approaching the acoustic black hole, the Lyapunov exponent of the growth of the momentum at the horizon saturates the chaos bound $Λ_{\rm Lyapunov}\leq 2 πT$. We investigate the orbits of test vortices and sound wave rays in the $2+1$-dimensional "curved" spacetime of an acoustic black hole. We show that the vortices orbit, the sound wave orbit, and the time delay of sound are similar to those famous effects of general relativity. These effects can be verified experimentally in future experiments.

Violation of the viscosity/entropy bound in translationally invariant non-Fermi liquids

The shear viscosity is an important characterization of how a many-body system behaves like a fluid. We study the shear viscosity in a strongly interacting solvable model, consisting of coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) islands. As temperature is lowered, the model exhibits a crossover from an incoherent metal with local criticality to a marginal fermi liquid. We find that while the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in the marginal Fermi liquid regime satisfies a Kovtun-Son-Starinets (KSS) like bound, it can strongly violate the KSS bound in a robust temperature range of the incoherent metal regime, implying a nearly perfect fluidity of the coupled local critical SYK model. Furthermore, this model also provides the first translationally invariant example violating the KSS bound with known gauge-gravity correspondence.

Complexity growth rate, grand potential and partition function

We examine the complexity/volume conjecture and further investigate the possible connections between complexity and partition function. The complexity/volume 2.0 states that the complexity growth rate $\mathcal{\dot{C}}\sim PV$. In the standard statistics, there is a fundamental relation among $PV$, the grand potential $Ω$ and the partition function $\mathcal{Z}$. By using this relation, we are able to construct an ansatz between complexity and partition function. The complexity/partition function relation is then utilized to study the complexity of the thermofield double state of extended SYK models for various conditions. The relation between complexity growth rate and black hole phase transition is also discussed.

Linear and quadratic in temperature resistivity from holography

We present a new black hole solution in the asymptotic Lifshitz spacetime with a hyperscaling violating factor. A novel computational method is introduced to compute the DC thermoelectric conductivities analytically. We find that both the linear-T and quadratic-T contributions to the resistivity can be realized, indicating that a more detailed comparison with experimental phenomenology can be performed in this scenario.

Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in Higher Derivative Gravity with Momentum Dissipation

We investigate $η/s$ in linear scalar fields modified Gauss-Bonnet theory that breaks translation invariance. We first calculate $η/s$ both analytically and numerically and show its relationship with temperature in log-log plot. Our results show that $η/s\sim T^2$ at low temperatures. The causality is also considered in this work. We then find that causality violation still happens in the presence of the linear scalar field and we suggest there is a Gauss-Bonnet coupling dependent lower limit for the effective mass of the graviton. If the effective mass of the graviton is big enough, then there will be no causality violation and hence no constraints for the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.

Anisotropic Fermi surface from holography

We investigate the probe holographic fermions by using an anisotropic charged black brane solution. We derive the equation of motion of probe bulk fermions with one Fermi momentum along the anisotropic and one along the isotropic directions. We then numerically solve the equation and analyze the properties of Green function with these two momentums. We find in this case the shape of Fermi surface is anisotropic. However, for both Fermi momentums perpendicular to the anisotropic direction, the Fermi surface is isotropic. We verify that our system obeys the recently conjectured bound for thermoelectric diffusion constants for the stable branch of the black brane solutions.

Drag force of Anisotropic plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential

We perform the calculation of drag force acting on a massive quark moving through an anisotropic ${\cal N}=4$ SU(N)= 4 SU(N) Super Yang-Mills plasma in the presence of a U(1) chemical potential. We present the numerical results for any value of anisotropy and arbitrary direction of the quark velocity with respect to the direction of anisotropy. We find the effect of chemical potential or charge density will enhance the drag force for the our charged solution.

Holographic Interpretation of Acoustic Black Holes

With the attempt to find the holographic description of usual acoustic black holes in fluid, we construct an acoustic black hole formed in the $d$-dimensional fluid located at the timelike cutoff surface of a neutral black brane in asymptotically AdS$_{d+1}$ spacetime, the bulk gravitational dual of the acoustic black hole is presented at first order of the hydrodynamic fluctuation. Moreover, the Hawking-like temperature of the acoustic black hole horizon is showed to be connected to the Hawking temperature of the real AdS black brane in the bulk, and the duality between the phonon scattering in the acoustic black hole and the sound channel quasinormal mode propagating in the bulk perturbed AdS black brane is extracted. We thus point out that, the acoustic black hole appeared in fluid, which was originally proposed as an analogous model to simulate Hawking radiation of the real black hole, is not merely an analogy, it can indeed be used to describe specific properties of the real AdS black holes, in the spirits of the fluid/gravity duality.

Notes on shear viscosity bound violation in anisotropic models

The shear viscosity bound violation in Einstein gravity for anisotropic black branes is discussed, with the aim of constraining the deviation of the shear viscosity-entropy density ratio from the shear viscosity bound using causality and thermodynamics analysis. The results show that no stringent constraints can be imposed. The diffusion bound in anisotropic phases is also studied. Ultimately, it is concluded that shear viscosity violation always occurs in cases where the equation of motion of the metric fluctuations cannot be written in a form identical to that of the minimally coupled massless scalar fields.

Thermoelectric conductivities, shear viscosity, and stability in an anisotropic linear axion model

We study thermoelectric conductivities and shear viscosities in a holographically anisotropic model, which is dual to a spatially anisotropic $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at finite chemical potential. Momentum relaxation is realized through perturbing the linear axion field. Ac conductivity exhibits a coherent/incoherent metal transition. Deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz law are also observed in our model. The longitudinal shear viscosity for prolate anisotropy violates the bound conjectured by Kovtun-Son-Starinets. We also find that thermodynamic and dynamical instabilities are not always equivalent by examining the Gubser-Mitra conjecture.

Thermoelectric DC conductivities with momentum dissipation from higher derivative gravity

We present a mechanism of momentum relaxation in higher derivative gravity by adding linear scalar fields to the Gauss-Bonnet theory. We analytically computed all of the DC thermoelectric conductivities in this theory by adopting the method given by Donos and Gauntlett in [arXiv:1406.4742]. The results show that the DC electric conductivity is not a monotonic function of the effective impurity parameter $β$: in the small $β$ limit, the DC conductivity is dominated by the coherent phase, while for larger $β$, pair creation contribution to the conductivity becomes dominant, signaling an incoherent phase. In addition, the DC heat conductivity is found independent of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.

Anisotropic plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential

We present a type IIB supergravity solution dual to a spatially anisotropic $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential and finite temperature. The effective five-dimensional gravitational theory is a consistent Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-Axion truncation of the gauged supergravity. We obtain the solutions both numerically and analytically. We study the phase structure and thermodynamic instabilities of the solution, and find new instabilities independent of the renormalization scheme.

Anisotropic plasma with a chemical potential and scheme-independent instabilities

Generically, the black brane solution with planar horizons is thermodynamically stable. We find a counter-example to this statement by demonstrating that an anisotropic black brane is unstable. We present a charged black brane solution dual to a spatially anisotropic finite temperature $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential. This static and regular solution is obtained both numerically and analytically. We uncover rich thermodynamic phase structures for this system by considering the cases when the anisotropy constant "a" takes real and imaginary values, respectively. In the case $a^2>0$, the phase structure of this anisotropic black brane is similar to that of Schwarzschild-AdS black hole with $S^3$ horizon topology, yielding a thermodynamical instability at smaller horizon radii. For the condition $a^2\leq 0$, the thermodynamics is dominated by the black brane phase for all temperatures.

Transport Coefficients for Holographic Hydrodynamics at Finite Energy Scale

We investigate the relations between black hole thermodynamics and holographic transport coefficients in this paper. The formulae for DC conductivity and diffusion coefficient are verified for electrically single-charged black holes. We examine the correctness of the proposed expressions by taking charged dilatonic and single-charged STU black holes as two concrete examples, and compute the flows of conductivity and diffusion coefficient by solving the linear order perturbation equations. We then check the consistence by evaluating the Brown-York tensor at a finite radial position. Finally, we find that the retarded Green functions for the shear modes can be expressed easily in terms of black hole thermodynamic quantities and transport coefficients.

Holographic fermions with running chemical potential and dipole coupling

We explore the properties of the holographic fermions in extremal $R$-charged black hole background with a running chemical potential, as well as the dipole coupling between fermions and the gauge field in the bulk. We find that although the running chemical potential effect the location of the Fermi surface, it does not change the type of fermions. We also study the onset of the Fermi gap and the gap effected by running chemical potential and the dipole coupling. The spectral function in the limit $ω\rightarrow0$ and the existence of the Fermi liquid are also investigated. The running chemical potential and the dipole coupling altogether can make a non-Fermi liquid become the Landau-Fermi type.

Observing the inhomogeneity in the holographic models of superconductors

We study the gravity duals of striped holographic superconductors in the AdS black hole and AdS soliton backgrounds. We show the dependences of the condensation and the critical temperature/critical chemical potential on the inhomogeneity in these two different spacetimes. By exploring the dynamics of the normal phase through the scalar field perturbation, we argue that the pair susceptibility and the conductivity can be possible phenomenological indications to disclose the property of inhomogeneity.

Striped phases in the holographic insulator/superconductor transition

We study striped phases in holographic insulator/superconductor transition by considering a spatially modulated chemical potential in AdS soliton background. Generally striped phases can develop above a critical chemical potential. When the constant leading term in the chemical potential is set to zero, a discontinuity in the plot of charge density versus chemical potential is observed in the limit of large wave vector. We explain this discontinuity using an analytical approach. When the constant leading term in the chemical potential is present, the critical chemical potential is larger than in the case of a homogeneous chemical potential, which indicates that the spatially modulated chemical potential disfavors the phase transition. This behavior is also confirmed qualitatively by analytical calculations. We also calculate the grand canonical potential and find that the striped phase is favored.

Acoustic black holes from supercurrent tunneling

We present a version of acoustic black holes by using the principle of the Josephson effect. We find that in the case two superconductors $A$ and $B$ are separated by an insulating barrier, an acoustic black hole may be created in the middle region between the two superconductors. We discuss in detail how to describe an acoustic black hole in the Josephson junction and write the metric in the langauge of the superconducting electronics. Our final results infer that for big enough tunneling current and thickness of the junction, experimental verification of the Hawking temperature could be possible.

Analytical calculation on critical magnetic field in holographic superconductors with backreaction

We investigate the effect of spacetime backreaction on the upper critical magnetic field for s-wave holographic superconductors by using the matching method. The backreaction of the constant external magnetic field and the electric field to the background geometry leads to a dyonic black hole solution. The magnetic fields as well as the electric fields acting as gravitational sources tend to depress the critical temperature of the superconductor. We derive the analytical expression for the upper critical magnetic field up to $\mathcal{O}(κ^2)$ order and find that backreaction makes the upper critical magnetic field stronger. The result is consistent with the previous numerical and analytical results.

d-Wave holographic superconductors with backreaction in external magnetic fields

We study the d-wave holographic superconductors (the d-wave model proposed in [arXiv:1003.2991[hep-th]]) immersed in constant external magnetic fields by using the analytic matching method and numerical computation. In the probe limit, we calculate the spatially dependent condensate solution in the presence of the magnetism and find that the expression for the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The result shows that the upper critical field gradually increases to its maximum value $B_{c2}$ at absolute zero temperature T=0, while vanishing at the critical temperature $T=T_c$. Moving away from the probe limit, we investigate the effect of spacetime backreaction on the critical temperature and the upper critical magnetic field. The magnetic fields as well as the electric fields acting as gravitational sources reduce the critical temperature of the superconductor and actually result in a dyonic black hole solution to the leading order. We obtain the expression for the upper critical magnetic field up to $\mathcal{O}(κ^2)$ order. The analytic result is consistent with the numerical findings.

Gravitational thermodynamics and universal holographic duality in dynamical spacetimes

We construct a generalized Smarr formula which could provide a thermodynamic route to derive the covariant field equation of general theories of gravity in dynamic spacetimes. Combining some thermodynamic variables and a new chemical potential conjugated to the number of degree of freedom on the holographic screen, we find a universal Cardy-Verlinde formula and give its braneworld interpretation. We demonstrate that the associated AdS-Bekenstein bound is tighten than the previous expression for multi-charge black holes in the gauged supergravities. The Cardy-Verlinde formula and the AdS-Bekenstein bound are derived from the thermodynamics of bulk trapping horizons, which strongly suggests the underlying holographic duality between dynamical bulk spacetime and boundary field theory.

Holographic fermions in charged Lifshitz theory

We investigate the properties of holographic fermions in charged Lifshitz black holes at finite temperature through the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the charged Lifshitz background with the dynamical exponent $z=2$, we find that the dispersion relation is linear. The scaling behavior of the imaginal part of the Green function relative to $k_{\perp}=k-k_F$ is also discussed. We find, although the system has linear dispersion relation and quadratic quasi-particle width, it does not satisfy Luttinger's theorem. We also find that the variation of the scaling parameters $α$ and $β$ is small as the charge $q$ varies. Furthermore, we also discuss the effect of the dynamical exponent $z$ by considering the cases $z=4$ and $z=6$ and show that $ImG_{ii}$ become smooth when the dynamical exponent $z$ increases.

Holographic RG flows and transport coefficients in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory

We apply the membrane paradigm and the holographic Wilsonian approach to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory. The transport coefficients for a quark-gluon plasma living on the cutoff surface are derived in a spacetime of charged black brane. Because of the mixing of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the Maxwell fields, the vector modes/shear modes of the metric and Maxwell fluctuations turn out to be very difficult to decouple. We firstly evaluate the AC conductivity at a finite cutoff surface by solving the equation of motion numerically, then manage to derive the radial flow of DC conductivity with the use of the Kubo formula. It turns out that our analytical results match the numerical data in low frequency limit very well. The diffusion constant $D(u_c)$ is also derived in a long wavelength expansion limit. We find it depends on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling as well as the position of the cutoff surface.

Acoustic black holes for relativistic fluids

We derive a new acoustic black hole metric from the Abelian Higgs model. In the non-relativistic limit, while the Abelian Higgs model becomes the Ginzburg-Landau model, the metric reduces to an ordinary Unruh type. We investigate the possibility of using (type I and II) superconductors as the acoustic black holes. We propose to realize experimental acoustic black holes by using spiral vortices solutions from the Navier-stokes equation in the non-relativistic classical fluids.

Analytical study on holographic superconductors in external magnetic field

We investigate the holographic superconductors immersed in an external magnetic field by using the analytical approach. We obtain the spatially dependent condensate solutions in the presence of the magnetism and find analytically that the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We observe analytically the reminiscent of the Meissner effect where the magnetic field expels the condensate. Extending to the D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes, we examine the influence given by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the condensation. Different from the positive coupling, we find that the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling enhances the condensation when the external magnetism is not strong enough.

Deriving the gravitational field equation and horizon entropy for arbitrary diffeomorphism-invariant gravity from spacetime solid

Motivated by the analogy between the spacetime and the solid with inhomogeneous elasticity modulus, we present an alternative method to obtain the field equation of any diffeomorphism-invariant gravity, by extremizing the constructed entropy function of the displacement vector field of spacetime solid. In general stationary spacetimes, we show that the Wald entropy of horizon arises from the on-shell entropy function of spacetime solid.

Dynamical horizon entropy and equilibrium thermodynamics of generalized gravity theories

We study the relation between the thermodynamics and field equations of generalized gravity theories on the dynamical trapping horizon with sphere symmetry. We assume the entropy of dynamical horizon as the Noether charge associated with the Kodama vector and point out that it satisfies the second law when a Gibbs equation holds. We generalize two kinds of Gibbs equations to Gauss-Bonnet gravity on any trapping horizon. Based on the quasi-local gravitational energy found recently for $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor gravity in some special cases, we also build up the Gibbs equations, where the nonequilibrium entropy production, which is usually invoked to balance the energy conservation, is just absorbed into the modified Wald entropy in the FRW spacetime with slowly varying horizon. Moreover, the equilibrium thermodynamic identity remains valid for $f(R)$ gravity in a static spacetime. Our work provides an alternative treatment to reinterpret the nonequilibrium correction and supports the idea that the horizon thermodynamics is universal for generalized gravity theories.

Hydrodynamics of RN AdS$_4$ black hole and Holographic Optics

We consider the AdS$_4$ RN black hole and work out the momentum dependent hydrodynamic analysis for the vector modes. We also perform the spectral function calculation of the dual field theory. As an application, we consider the permittivity and permeability and find that for low frequency regime, the index of refraction is found to be negative, supporting the claim made in ref.\cite{amariti} for AdS$_5$. We also find that at static limit the medium has the zero permeability, a character of the superconductivity .

Shear viscosity, instability and the upper bound of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant

We compute the dimensionality dependence of $η/s$ for charged black branes with Gauss-Bonnet correction. We find that both causality and stability constrain the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant to be bounded by 1/4 in the infinite dimensionality limit. We further show that higher dimensionality stabilize the gravitational perturbation. The stabilization of the perturbation in higher dimensional space-time is a straightforward consequence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant bound.

Entropy function and higher derivative corrections to entropies in (anti-)de Sitter space

We first briefly discuss the relation between black hole thermodynamics and the entropy function formalism. We find that an equation which governs the relationship between Sen's entropy function and black hole entropy, can quickly give higher order corrections to entropy of pure (anti-) de Sitter space without knowing the corrected metric. We also show that near horizon geometry and the entropy function extremization is no longer required for pure (anti-)de Sitter space. The entropy of (anti-)de Sitter space and Schwarzschild-(anti-) de Sitter black holes together with Gauss-Bonnet terms, $R^2$ terms and $R^4$ terms are calculated as concrete examples.

Viscosity Bound, Causality Violation and Instability with Stringy Correction and Charge

Recently, it has been shown that if we consider the higher derivative correction, the viscosity bound conjectured to be $η/s=1/4π$ is violated and so is the causality. In this paper, we consider medium effect and the higher derivative correction simultaneously by adding charge and Gauss-Bonnet terms. We find that the viscosity bound violation is not changed by the charge. However, we find that two effects together create another instability for large momentum regime. We argue the presence of tachyonic modes and show it numerically. The stability of the black brane requires the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $λ$($=2α'/l^2$) to be smaller than 1/24. We draw a phase diagram relevant to the instability in charge-coupling space.
