Bright entangled photon source without stringent crystal temperature and laser frequency stabilization

Entangled photon sources (EPS), the major building block for a variety of quantum communication protocols, are commonly developed by utilizing the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in $χ^{2}$ nonlinear bulk optical materials. While high nonlinearity and long interaction length have established the superiority of the periodically poled crystals for EPSs, the phase-matching condition of such crystals is very sensitive to the fluctuation of the crystal temperature and the laser wavelength. As a result, deploying such sources outside the laboratory, for example, satellite-based applications, demands a stringent mass and power budget, thus enhancing the mission complexity and cost. We report a bright, stable entangled photon source with a relaxed requirement of crystal temperature and laser wavelength stabilization. Using a periodically poled KTP crystal inside a polarization Sagnac interferometer producing degenerate, type-0 phase-matched entangled photon pairs at 810 nm in an annular ring, we have transformed the SPDC ring into a "perfect" ring with the help of two common optical elements, axicon, and lens. Despite the variation of the SPDC ring size from Gaussian to annular of different diameters due to the change of crystal temperature over $7^{o}$C, and laser wavelength over 300 GHz, we observe the size of the "perfect" ring to be constant. The new EPS, having a spectral brightness as high as 22.58 $\pm$ 0.15 kHz/mW collected using single-mode fiber with a Bell's parameter, S = 2.64 $\pm$ 0.05, and quantum state fidelity of 0.95 $\pm$ 0.02, requires a crystal temperature stability of $\pm$ $0.8^{o}$C, almost five times relaxation as compared to the previous EPS. The generic scheme can be used for non-collinear SPDC photons in all crystals to develop EPS at any wavelength and timescales for resource-constrained applications.

Ultrasensitive interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in NbGd composite thin films

A model binary hybrid system composed of a randomly distributed rare-earth ferromagnetic (Gd) part embedded in an s-wave superconducting (Nb) matrix is being manufactured to study the interplay between competing superconducting and ferromagnetic order parameters. The normal metallic to superconducting phase transition appears to be very sensitive to the magnetic counterpart and the modulation of the superconducing properties follow closely to the Abrikosov-Gorkov (AG) theory of magnetic impurity induced pair breaking mechanism. A critical concentration of Gd is obtained for the studied NbGd based composite films (CFs) above which superconductivity disappears. Besides, a magnetic ordering resembling the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) appears in DC magnetization measurements at temperatures close to the superconducting transition temperature. The positive magnetization related to the PME emerges upon doping Nb with Gd. The temperature dependent resistance measurements evolve in a similar fashion with the concentration of Gd as that with an external magnetic field and in both the cases, the transition curves accompany several intermediate features indicating the traces of magnetism originated either from Gd or from the external field. Finally, the signatures of magnetism appear evidently in the magnetization and transport measurements for the CFs with very low (less than 1 at. %) doping of Gd.

A note on commuting automorphisms of some finite $p$-groups

An automorphism $α$ of a group $G$ is called a commuting automorphism if each element $x$ in $G$ commutes with its image $α(x)$ under $α$. Let $A(G)$ denote the set of all commuting automorphisms of $G$. Rai [Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A {\bf 91} (2015), no. 5, 57-60] has given some sufficient conditions on a finite $p$-group $G$ such that $A(G)$ is a subgroup of Aut$(G)$ and, as a consequence, has proved that in a finite $p$-group $G$ of co-class 2, where $p$ is an odd prime, $A(G)$ is a subgroup of Aut$(G)$. We give here very elementary and short proofs of main results of Rai.

Isomorphism between automorphism groups of finitely generated groups

Let $G$ be a finitely generated group and let $C^*$ denote the group of all central automorphisms of $G$ fixing the center of $G$ elementwise. Azhdari and Malayeri [J. Algebra Appl., {\bf 6}(2011), 1283-1290] gave necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$ such that $C^* \simeq \mathrm{Inn}(G)$. We prove a technical lemma and, as a consequence, obtain a short and easy proof of this result of Azhdari and Malayeri. Subsequently, we also obtain short proofs of some other existing and some new related results.

Effect of phase separation induced supercooling on magnetotransport properties of epitaxial La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y~0.4) thin film

Thin films of La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y~0.4) have been grown on single crystal SrTiO3 (001) by RF sputtering. The structural and surface characterizations confirm the epitaxial nature of these film. However, the difference between the rocking curve of the (002) and (110) peaks and the presence of pits/holes in the step-terrace type surface morphology suggests high density of defect in these films. Pronounced hysteresis between the field cool cooled (FCC) and field cooled warming (FCW) magnetization measurements suggest towards the non-ergodic magnetic state. The origin of this nonergodicity could be traced to the magnetic liquid like state arising from the delicacy of the coexisting magnetic phases, viz., ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic-charge ordered (FM/AFM-CO). The large difference between the insulator metal transitions during cooling and warming cycles (TIMC~64 K and TIMW~123 K) could be regarded as a manifestation of the nonergodicity leading to supercooling of the magnetic liquid while cooling. The nonergodicity and supercooling are weakened by the AFM-FM phase transition induced by an external magnetic field. TIM and small polaron activation energy corresponding the magnetic liquid state (cooling cycle) vary nonlinearly with the applied magnetic field but become linear in the crystalline solid state (warming cycle). The analysis of the low temperature resistivity data shows that electron-phonon interaction is drastically reduced by the applied magnetic field. The resistivity minimum in the lower temperature region of the self-field warming curve has been explained in terms of the Kondo like scattering in the magnetically inhomogeneous regime.

Automorphisms of groups and converse of Schur's theorem

An automorphism of a group G is called an IA-automorphism if it induces the identity automorphism on the abelianized group G/G'. Let IA(G) denote the group of all IA-automorphisms of G. We classify all finitely generated nilpotent groups G of class 2 for which IA(G) is isomorphic to Inn(G). In particular, we classify all finite nilpotent groups of class 2 for which each IA-automorphism is inner. As consequences, we give surprisingly very easy proofs of converse of Schur's theorem and also prove some other related results.

Comparative study of magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Sm0.55Sr0.45MnO3 thin films grown on different substrates

Highly oriented polycrystalline SSMO thin films deposited on single crystal substrates by ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis have been studied. The film on LAO is under compressive strain while LSAT and STO are under tensile strain. The presence of a metamagnetic state akin to cluster glass formed due to coexisting FM and antiferromagnetic/charge order (AFM/CO) clusters. All the films show colossal magnetoresistance but its temperature and magnetic field dependence are drastically different. In the lower temperature region the magnetic field dependent isothermal resistivity also shows signature of metamagnetic transitions. The observed results have been explained in terms of the variation of the relative fractions of the coexisting FM and AFM/CO phases as a function of the substrate induced strain and oxygen vacancy induced quenched disorder.
