Evolution of chirality from transverse wobbling in $^{135}$Pr

Chirality is a distinct signature that characterizes triaxial shapes in nuclei. We report the first observation of chirality in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr using a high-statistics Gammasphere experiment with the $^{123}$Sb($^{16}$O,4n)$^{135}$Pr reaction. Two chiral-partner bands with the configuration $π(1h_{11/2})^1\otimesν(1h_{11/2})^{-2}$ have been identified in this nucleus. Angular distribution analyses of the $ΔI = 1$ transitions connecting the two bands reveal a dominant dipole character, and quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations show good agreement with the data. Since the simultaneous observation of chirality and transverse wobbling in $^{135}$Pr relies critically on these angular distribution results, we also address and refute the experimental and theoretical criticisms raised in a recent work by Lv et al., presenting additional evidence that further strengthens our interpretation. This marks the first observation of both hallmarks of triaxiality-chirality and wobbling-in the same nucleus.

E2 Rotational Invariants of $0^+_1$ and $2^+_1$ states for $^{106}$Cd: the Emergence of Collective Rotation

The collective structure of $^{106}$Cd is elucidated by multi-step Coulomb excitation of a 3.849 MeV/$A$ beam of $^{106}$Cd on a 1.1 mg/cm$^2$ $^{208}$Pb target using GRETINA-CHICO2 at ATLAS. Fourteen $E2$ matrix elements were obtained. The nucleus $^{106}$Cd is a prime example of emergent collectivity that possesses a simple structure: it is free of complexity caused by shape coexistence and has a small, but collectively active number of valence nucleons. This work follows in a long and currently active quest to answer the fundamental question of the origin of nuclear collectivity and deformation, notably in the cadmium isotopes. The results are discussed in terms of phenomenological models, the shell model, and Kumar-Cline sums of $E2$ matrix elements. The ${\langle 0_2^+ ||E2||2_1^+ \rangle}$ matrix element is determined for the first time, providing a total, converged measure of the electric quadrupole strength, $\langle Q^2 \rangle$, of the first-excited $2_1^+$ level relative to the $0_1^+$ ground state, which does not show an increase as expected of harmonic and anharmonic vibrations. Strong evidence for triaxial shapes in weakly collective nuclei is indicated; collective vibrations are excluded. This is contrary to the only other cadmium result of this kind in $^{114}$Cd by C. Fahlander et al., Nucl. Phys. A485, 327 (1988), which is complicated by low-lying shape coexistence near midshell.

Emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomerism at high excitation near $^{208}$Pb

Metastable states with T$_{1/2}$ = 8(2) ms in $^{205}$Bi and T$_{1/2}$ = 0.22(2) ms in $^{204}$Pb, with $\approx $ 8 MeV excitation energy and angular momentum $\ge $ 22 $\hbar $, have been established. These represent, by up to two orders of magnitude, the longest-lived nuclear states above an excitation energy of 7 MeV, ever identified in the nuclear chart. Additionally, the half-life of the 10.17 MeV state in $^{206}$Bi has been determined to be 0.027(2) ms, the next highest value in this highly excited regime. These observations indicate the emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomerism arising from core-excited configurations at high excitation in the vicinity of the doubly closed-shell nucleus $^{208}$Pb. These results are expected to provide discriminating tests of the effective interactions used in current large-scale shell-model calculations.

High quality superconducting Nb co-planar resonators on sapphire substrate

We present measurements and simulations of superconducting Nb co-planar waveguide resonators on sapphire substrate down to millikelvin temperature range with different readout powers. In the high temperature regime, we demonstrate that the Nb film residual surface resistance is comparable to that observed in the ultra-high quality, bulk Nb 3D superconducting radio frequency cavities while the resonator quality is dominated by the BCS thermally excited quasiparticles. At low temperature both the resonator quality factor and frequency can be well explained using the two-level system models. Through the energy participation ratio simulations, we find that the two-level system loss tangent is $\sim 10^{-2}$, which agrees quite well with similar studies performed on the Nb 3D cavities.

Evidence for $Z_{c}^{\pm}$ decays into the $ρ^{\pm} η_{c}$ final state

We study $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with a $π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c}$ final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=4.226$, $4.258$, $4.358$, $4.416$, and $4.600$ GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of $3.9σ$ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at $\sqrt{s} = 4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be $(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}$. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Isomers in 203Tl and core excitations built on a five-nucleon-hole structure

Isomers with three- and five-nucleon-hole configurations have been established in $^{203}$Tl. These include newly identified levels with a three-nucleon structure: {\it I}$^{π}$ = (15/2$^{-}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 7.9(5) ns, and {\it I}$^{π}$ = (35/2$^{-}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 4.0(5) ns. In addition, five-quasiparticle states: {\it I}$^{π}$ = (39/2$^{-}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 1.9(2) ns, and {\it I}$^{π}$ = (49/2$^{+}$) with {\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 3.4(4) ns have also been established. The previously determined long-lived decay [{\it T}$_{1/2}$ = 6.6(3) $μ$s from this work] is associated with isomerism of the {\it I}$^{π}$ = (29/2$^{+}$) state. Levels above this long-lived isomer have been identified through a delayed-prompt coincidence measurement. Five-nucleon-hole states with excitation energies {\it E}$_{x}$ $\approx $ 7 MeV have been established as well as possible octupole excitations of the $^{208}$Pb core built on these levels. The level scheme of $^{203}$Tl is extended up to {\it E}$_{x}$ $\approx $ 11 MeV with the inclusion of 25 new transitions. Empirical and shell-model calculations have been performed to aid in the description of the observed states which are found to be predominantly of intrinsic character.

Observation of the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057 with the H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS telescopes

The results of gamma-ray observations of the binary system HESS J0632+057 collected during 450 hours over 15 years, between 2004 and 2019, are presented. Data taken with the atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS at energies above 350 GeV were used together with observations at X-ray energies obtained with Swift-XRT, Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Suzaku. Some of these observations were accompanied by measurements of the Hα emission line. A significant detection of the modulation of the VHE gamma-ray fluxes with a period of 316.7+-4.4 days is reported, consistent with the period of 317.3+-0.7 days obtained with a refined analysis of X-ray data. The analysis of data of four orbital cycles with dense observational coverage reveals short timescale variability, with flux-decay timescales of less than 20 days at very high energies. Flux variations observed over the time scale of several years indicate orbit-to-orbit variability. The analysis confirms the previously reported correlation of X-ray and gamma-ray emission from the system at very high significance, but can not find any correlation of optical Hα parameters with X-ray or gamma-ray energy fluxes in simultaneous observations. The key finding is that the emission of HESS J0632+057 in the X-ray and gamma-ray energy bands is highly variable on different time scales. The ratio of gamma-ray to X-ray flux shows the equality or even dominance of the gamma-ray energy range. This wealth of new data is interpreted taking into account the insufficient knowledge of the ephemeris of the system, and discussed in the context of results reported on other gamma-ray binary systems.

First candidates for γ vibrational bands built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital in odd-A Dy isotopes

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd(α,2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ= 2+ γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a Kπ=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed.

Longitudinal Wobbling Motion in $^{187}$Au

The rare phenomenon of nuclear wobbling motion has been investigated for the nucleus $^{187}$Au. A longitudinal wobbling-bands pair has been identified and clearly distinguished from the associated signature-partner band on the basis of angular distribution measurements. Theoretical calculations in the framework of the Particle Rotor Model (PRM) are found to agree well with the experimental observations. This is the first experimental evidence for longitudinal wobbling bands where the expected signature partner band has also been identified, and establishes this exotic collective mode as a general phenomenon over the nuclear chart.

Multi-nucleon transfer in the interaction of 977 MeV and 1143 MeV $^{204}$Hg with $^{208}$Pb

A previous study of symmetric collisions of massive nuclei has shown that current models of multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions do not adequately describe the transfer product yields. To gain further insight into this problem, we have measured the yields of MNT products in the interaction of 977 (E/A = 4.79 MeV) and 1143 MeV (E/A = 5.60 MeV) $^{204}$Hg with $^{208}$Pb. We find that the yield of multi-nucleon transfer products are similar in these two reactions and are substantially lower than those observed in the reaction of 1257 MeV (E/A = 6.16 MeV) $^{204}$Hg + $^{198}$Pt. We compare our measurements with the predictions of the GRAZING-F, di-nuclear systems (DNS) and improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) models. For the observed isotopes of the elements Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi, the measured values of the MNT cross sections are orders of magnitude larger than the predicted values. Furthermore, the various models predict the formation of nuclides near the N=126 shell, which are not observed.

Observation of $γ$-vibrations and alignments built on non-ground-state configurations in 156Dy

The exact nature of the lowest $K^π=2_γ^+$ rotational bands in all deformed nuclei remains obscure. Traditionally they are assumed to be collective vibrations of the nuclear shape in the $γ$ degree of freedom perpendicular to the nuclear symmetry axis. Very few such $γ$-bands have been traced past the usual back-bending rotational alignments of high-j nucleons. We have investigated the structure of positive-parity bands in the N=90 nucleus 156Dy, using the 148Nd(12C,4n)156Dy reaction at 65 MeV, observing the resulting $γ$-ray transitions with the Gammasphere array. The even- and odd-spin members of the $K^π=2_γ^+$ $γ$-band are observed to 32+ and 31+ respectively. This rotational band faithfully tracks the ground-state configuration to the highest spins. The members of a possible $γ$-vibration built on the aligned yrast S-band are observed to spins 28+ and 27+. An even-spin positive-parity band, observed to spin 24+, is a candidate for an aligned S-band built on the seniority-zero configuration of the $0_2^+$ state at 676 keV. The crossing of this band with the $0_2^+$ band is at $\hbarω$= 0.28(1) MeV and is consistent with the configuration of the $0_2^+$ band not producing any blocking of the monopole pairing.

Observation of a cross-section enhancement near mass threshold in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$

The process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ is studied using data samples at $\sqrt{s}=2.2324$, 2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section is measured at $\sqrt{s}$=2.2324 GeV, which is 1.0 MeV above the $Λ\barΛ$ mass threshold, to be $305\pm45^{+66}_{-36}$ pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The substantial cross section near threshold is significantly larger than that expected from theory, which predicts the cross section to vanish at threshold. The Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV are measured and found to be consistent with previous experimental results, but with improved precision. Finally, the corresponding effective electromagnetic form factors of $Λ$ are deduced.

Reexamination of $^{6}$Li scattering as a Probe to Investigate the Isoscalar Giant Resonances in Nuclei

Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb. It was found that the monopole strength in ${}^{12}$C exhausts $52 \pm 3^\text{(stat.)} \pm 8 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous $α$-scattering experiments. The monopole strength in ${}^{93}$Nb exhausts $92 \pm 4^\text{(stat.)} \pm 10 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of $A\approx90$. Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

Search for dark matter signals towards a selection of recently-detected DES dwarf galaxy satellites of the Milky Way with H.E.S.S

Dwarf spheroidal galaxy satellites of the Milky Way are prime targets for indirect detection of dark matter with gamma rays due to their proximity, high dark matter content and absence of non-thermal emission processes. Recently, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) revealed the existence of new ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the southern-hemisphere sky, therefore ideally located for ground-based observations with the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array H.E.S.S. We present a search for very-high-energy ($E\gtrsim100$ GeV) gamma-ray emission using H.E.S.S. observations carried out recently towards Reticulum II, Tucana II, Tucana III, Tucana IV and Grus II satellites. No significant very-high-energy gamma-ray excess is found from the observations on any individual object nor in the combined analysis of all the datasets. Using the most recent modeling of the dark matter distribution in the dwarf galaxy halo, we compute for the first time on DES satellites individual and combined constraints from Cherenkov telescope observations on the annihilation cross section of dark matter particles in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. The combined 95% C.L. observed upper limits reach $\langle σv \rangle \simeq 1 \times 10^{-23}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$ in the $W^+W^-$ channel and $4 \times 10^{-26}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$ in the $γγ$ channels for a dark matter mass of 1.5 TeV. The H.E.S.S. constraints well complement the results from Fermi-LAT, HAWC, MAGIC and VERITAS and are currently the most stringent in the $γγ$ channels in the multi-GeV/multi-TeV mass range.

Shape Coexistence at Zero Spin in 64Ni Driven by the Monopole Tensor Interaction

The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

Direct Evidence of Octupole Deformation in Neutron-Rich $^{144}$Ba

The neutron-rich nucleus $^{144}$Ba ($t_{1/2}$=11.5 s) is expected to exhibit some of the strongest octupole correlations among nuclei with mass numbers $A$ less than 200. Until now, indirect evidence for such strong correlations has been inferred from observations such as enhanced $E1$ transitions and interleaving positive- and negative-parity levels in the ground-state band. In this experiment, the octupole strength was measured directly by sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation of a post-accelerated 650-MeV $^{144}$Ba beam on a 1.0-mg/cm$^2$ $^{208}$Pb target. The measured value of the matrix element, $\langle 3_1^- \| \mathcal{M}(E3) \| 0_1^+ \rangle=0.65(^{+17}_{-23})$ $e$b$^{3/2}$, corresponds to a reduced $B(E3)$ transition probability of 48($^{+25}_{-34}$) W.u. This result represents an unambiguous determination of the octupole collectivity, is larger than any available theoretical prediction, and is consistent with octupole deformation.

Improved measurement of the absolute branching fraction of $D^{+}\rightarrow \bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ$

By analyzing 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at $\sqrt s=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0μ^{+}ν_μ)=(8.72 \pm 0.07_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.18_{\rm sys.})\%$, which is consistent with previous measurements within uncertainties but with significantly improved precision. Combining the Particle Data Group values of ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ)$, ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})$, and the lifetimes of the $D^0$ and $D^+$ mesons with the value of ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ)$ measured in this work, we determine the following ratios of partial widths: $Γ(D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ)/Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0μ^{+}ν_μ)=0.963\pm0.044$ and $Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ)/Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})=0.988\pm0.033$.

In-beam spectroscopy of medium- and high-spin states in $^{133}$Ce

Medium and high-spin states in $^{133}$Ce were investigated using the $^{116}$Cd($^{22}$Ne, $5n$) reaction and the Gammasphere array. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of $\sim22.8$ MeV and spin 93/2 . Eleven bands of quadrupole transitions and two new dipole bands are identified. The connections to low-lying states of the previously known, high-spin triaxial bands were firmly established, thus fixing the excitation energy and, in many cases, the spin parity of the levels. Based on comparisons with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory, it is shown that all observed bands are characterized by pronounced triaxiality. Competing multiquasiparticle configurations are found to contribute to a rich variety of collective phenomena in this nucleus.

Independent measurement of the Hoyle state $β$ feeding from 12B using Gammasphere

Using an array of high-purity Compton-suppressed germanium detectors, we performed an independent measurement of the $β$-decay branching ratio from $^{12}\mathrm{B}$ to the second-excited (Hoyle) state in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Our result is $0.64(11)\%$, which is a factor $\sim 2$ smaller than the previously established literature value, but is in agreement with another recent measurement. This could indicate that the Hoyle state is more clustered than previously believed. The angular correlation of the Hoyle state $γ$ cascade has also been measured for the first time. It is consistent with theoretical predictions.

Localization and broadband follow-up of the gravitational-wave transient GW150914

A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. Detailed investigations of the EM data and results of the EM follow-up campaign are being disseminated in papers by the individual teams.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in inclusive charged dipion production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.65 GeV

We present a measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries of two charged pions in the inclusive process $e^+e^-\rightarrow ππX$ based on a data set of 62 $\rm{pb}^{-1}$ at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=3.65$ GeV collected with the BESIII detector. These asymmetries can be attributed to the Collins fragmentation function. We observe a nonzero asymmetry, which increases with increasing pion momentum. As our energy scale is close to that of the existing semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experimental data, the measured asymmetries are important inputs for the global analysis of extracting the quark transversity distribution inside the nucleon and are valuable to explore the energy evolution of the spin-dependent fragmentation function.

Measurement of the $D_s^+ \to \ell^+ν_\ell$ branching fractions and the decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$

Using 482~pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.009$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions of the decays $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ and $D_s^+\toτ^+ν_τ$. By constraining the ratio of decay rates of $D_s^+$ to $τ^+ν_τ$ and to $μ^+ν_μ$ to the Standard Model prediction, the branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+ \to μ^+ν_μ) = (0.495 \pm 0.067 \pm 0.026)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+ \to τ^+ν_τ) = (4.83 \pm 0.65 \pm 0.26)\%$. Using these branching fractions, we obtain a value for the decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$ of $(241.0 \pm 16.3 \pm 6.5)~\text{MeV}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryon

Using $567\rm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions recorded at $\sqrt{s}=4.599\rm{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector, we report first measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of Cabibbo-favored decays of the $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryon with a double-tag technique. A global least-square fitter is utilized to improve the measured precision. Among the measurements for twelve $Λ_{c}^{+}$ decay modes, the branching fraction for $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow pK^-π^+$ is determined to be $(5.84\pm0.27\pm0.23)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Observation of $e^+e^- \rightarrow ωχ_{c1,2}$ near $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.42 and 4.6 GeV

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} >$ 4.4 GeV, the processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow ωχ_{c1,2}$ are observed for the first time. With an integrated luminosity of $1074 pb^{-1}$ near $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.42 GeV, a significant $ωχ_{c2}$ signal is found, and the cross section is measured to be $(20.9 \pm 3.2 \pm 2.5)\pb$. With $567 pb^{-1}$ near $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.6 GeV, a clear $ωχ_{c1}$ signal is seen, and the cross section is measured to be $(9.5 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.3) \pb$, while evidence is found for an $ωχ_{c2}$ signal. The first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Due to low luminosity or low cross section at other energies, no significant signals are observed. In the $ωχ_{c2}$ cross section, an enhancement is seen around $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.42 GeV. Fitting the cross section with a coherent sum of the $ψ(4415)$ Breit-Wigner function and a phase space term, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(ψ(4415)\toωχ_{c2})$ is obtained to be of the order of $10^{-3}$.

A search for radiative decays of the $P$-wave spin singlet charmonium resonance $h_c$ is performed based on $4.48 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ'$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Events of the reaction channels $h_{c} \rightarrow γη'$ and $γη$ are observed with a statistical significance of $8.4 σ$ and $4.0 σ$, respectively, for the first time. The branching fractions of $h_{c} \rightarrow γη'$ and $h_{c} \rightarrow γη$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(h_{c} \rightarrow γη')=(1.52 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(h_{c} \rightarrow γη)=(4.7 \pm 1.5 \pm 1.4)\times10^{-4}$, respectively, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic uncertainties.

Observation of an anomalous line shape of the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ mass spectrum near the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold in $J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$

Using $1.09\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII experiment in 2012, we study the $J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ process and observe a significant abrupt change in the slope of the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass distribution at the proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) mass threshold. We use two models to characterize the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ line shape around $1.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}$: one which explicitly incorporates the opening of a decay threshold in the mass spectrum (Flatté formula), and another which is the coherent sum of two resonant amplitudes. Both fits show almost equally good agreement with data, and suggest the existence of either a broad state around $1.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}$ with strong couplings to $p\bar{p}$ final states or a narrow state just below the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold. Although we cannot distinguish between the fits, either one supports the existence of a $p\bar{p}$ molecule-like state or bound state with greater than $7σ$ significance.

Observation of pseudoscalar and tensor resonances in $J/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ$

Based on a sample of $(1310.6 \pm 10.5) \times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, a partial wave analysis of the decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ$ is performed in order to study the intermediate states. Results of the partial wave analysis show that the structures are predominantly $0^{-+}$ states. The existence of the $η(2225)$ is confirmed, and its resonance parameters are measured. Two additional pseudoscalar states, the $η(2100)$ with a mass of $2050_{-24}^{+30}{}_{-26}^{+75}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and a width of $250_{-30}^{+36}{}_{-164}^{+181}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and the $X(2500)$ with a mass of $2470_{-19}^{+15}{}_{-23}^{+101}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and a width of $230_{-35}^{+64}{}_{-33}^{+56}$~MeV/$c^{2}$, are observed. In addition to these three pseudoscalar states, the scalar state $f_0(2100)$, and three tensor states, the $f_2(2010)$, $f_2(2300)$ and $f_2(2340)$, are observed in the process $J/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ$. The product branching fractions ${\cal B}$($J/ψ\rightarrow γX)\times{\cal B}(X\rightarrow ϕϕ)$ are reported.

Search for the weak decay $η^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and precise measurement of the branching fraction ${\cal B}(J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime})$

We present the first search for the rare decay of $η^\prime$ into $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ in $J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime}$, using a sample of $1.3\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit at the 90\% confidence level for the ratio $\frac{{\cal B}(η^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp})}{{\cal B}(η^{\prime}\toγπ^{+}π^{-})}$ is determined to be $1.3\times10^{-4}$. In addition, we report the measurement of the branching fraction of $J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime}$ to be $(5.10\pm0.03(\text{stat.})\pm0.32(\text{syst.}))\times10^{-4}$, which agrees with previous results from BESII.

Shape coexistence and the role of axial asymmetry in $^{72}$Ge

The quadrupole collectivity of low-lying states and the anomalous behavior of the $0^+_2$ and $2^+_3$ levels in $^{72}$Ge are investigated via projectile multi-step Coulomb excitation with GRETINA and CHICO-2. A total of forty six $E2$ and $M1$ matrix elements connecting fourteen low-lying levels were determined using the least-squares search code, gosia. Evidence for triaxiality and shape coexistence, based on the model-independent shape invariants deduced from the Kumar-Cline sum rule, is presented. These are interpreted using a simple two-state mixing model as well as multistate mixing calculations carried out within the framework of the triaxial rotor model. The results represent a significant milestone towards the understanding of the unusual structure of this nucleus.

Single-particle and collective excitations in $^{62}$Ni

{\bf Background:} Level sequences of rotational character have been observed in several nuclei in the $A=60$ mass region. The importance of the deformation-driving $πf_{7/2}$ and $νg_{9/2}$ orbitals on the onset of nuclear deformation is stressed.\\ {\bf Purpose:} A measurement was performed in order to identify collective rotational structures in the relatively neutron-rich $^{62}$Ni isotope. \\ {\bf Method:} The $^{26}$Mg($^{48}$Ca,2$α$4$nγ$)$^{62}$Ni complex reaction at beam energies between 275 and 320~MeV was utilized. Reaction products were identified in mass ($A$) and charge ($Z$) with the Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA) and $γ$ rays were detected with the Gammasphere array. \\ {\bf Results:} Two collective bands, built upon states of single-particle character, were identified and sizable deformation was assigned to both sequences based on the measured transitional quadrupole moments, herewith quantifying the deformation at high spin. \\ {\bf Conclusions:} Based on Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations and comparisons with deformed bands in the $A=60$ mass region, the two rotational bands are understood as being associated with configurations involving multiple $f_{7/2}$ protons and $g_{9/2}$ neutrons, driving the nucleus to sizable prolate deformation.

Study of $D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e$

We present an analysis of the decay $D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e$ based on data collected by the BESIII experiment at the $ψ(3770)$ resonance. Using a nearly background-free sample of 18262 events, we measure the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e) = (3.71 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.08)\%$. For $0.8<m_{Kπ}<1.0$ GeV/$c^{2}$ the partial branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e)_{[0.8,1]} = (3.33 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.07)\%$. A partial wave analysis shows that the dominant $\bar K^{*}(892)^{0}$ component is accompanied by an \emph{S}-wave contribution accounting for $(6.05\pm0.22\pm0.18)\%$ of the total rate and that other components are negligible. The parameters of the $\bar K^{*}(892)^{0}$ resonance and of the form factors based on the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions are also measured. We also present a measurement of the $\bar K^{*}(892)^{0}$ helicity basis form factors in a model-independent way.

The branching fraction of $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ)=[5.23\pm0.06(\mbox{stat})\pm0.33(\mbox{syst})]\times10^{-5}$, which agrees well with a previously published measurement, but with a significantly improved precision. No evident enhancement near the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold, denoted as $X(p\bar{p})$, is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to X(p\bar{p})ϕ\to p\bar{p}ϕ$ is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to X(p\bar{p})ϕ\to p\bar{p}ϕ)<2.1\times10^{-7}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

We present the new paradigm of critical current by design. Analogous to materials by design, it aims at predicting the optimal defect landscape in a superconductor for targeted applications by elucidating the vortex dynamics responsible for the bulk critical current. To highlight this approach, we demonstrate the synergistic combination of critical current measurements on commercial high-temperature superconductors containing self-assembled and irradiation tailored correlated defects by using large-scale time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations for vortex dynamics.

Unexpected distribution of $\nu1f_{7/2}$ strength in the calcium isotopes at $N$=30

The calcium isotopes have emerged as an important testing ground for new microscopically derived shell-model interactions, and a great deal of focus has been directed toward this region. We investigate the relative spectroscopic strengths associated with $1f_{7/2}$ neutron hole states in $^{47, 49}$Ca following one-neutron knockout reactions from $^{48,50}$Ca. The observed reduction of strength populating the lowest 7/2$^{-}_{1}$ state in $^{49}$Ca, as compared to $^{47}$Ca, is consistent with the description given by shell-model calculations based on two- and three-nucleon forces in the neutron $pf$ model space, implying a fragmentation of the $l$=3 strength to higher-lying states. The experimental result is inconsistent with both the GXPF1 interaction routinely used in this region of the nuclear chart and with microscopic calculations in an extended model space including the $\nu1g_{9/2}$ orbital.

$γ$-soft $^{146}$Ba and the role of non-axial shapes at N ~ 90

Low-spin states in the neutron-rich, N = 90 nuclide $^{146}$Ba were populated following $β$-decay of $^{146}$Cs, with the goal of clarifying the development of deformation in Ba isotopes through delineation of their non-yrast structures. Fission fragments of $^{146}$Cs were extracted from a 1.7-Ci $^{252}$Cf source and mass-selected using the CARIBU facility. Low-energy ions were deposited at the center of a box of thin $β$ detectors, surrounded by a high-efficiency HPGe array. The new $^{146}$Ba decay scheme now contains 31 excited levels extending up to ~2.5 MeV excitation energy, double what was previously known. These data are compared to predictions from the Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) model. It appears that the abrupt shape change found at N = 90 in Sm and Gd is much more gradual in Ba and Ce, due to an enhanced role of the $γ$ degree of freedom.

An amplitude analysis of the $π^{0}π^{0}$ system produced in radiative $J/ψ$ decays

An amplitude analysis of the $π^{0}π^{0}$ system produced in radiative $J/ψ$ decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the $π^{0}π^{0}$ system is determined as a function of $M_{π^{0}π^{0}}$ from an analysis of the $(1.311\pm0.011)\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the $π^0π^0$ system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of $J/ψ\to γπ^{0}π^{0}$ is determined to be $(1.15\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

Confirmation of a charged charmoniumlike state $Z_c(3885)^{\mp}$ in $e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}(D\bar{D}^*)^\mp$ with double $D$ tag

We present a study of the process $e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp}$ using data samples of 1092~pb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.23$~GeV and 826~pb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26$~GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. With full reconstruction of the $D$ meson pair and the bachelor $π^{\pm}$ in the final state, we confirm the existence of the charged structure $Z_c(3885)^{\mp}$ in the $(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp}$ system in the two isospin processes $e^+e^-\toπ^+D^0D^{*-}$ and $e^+e^-\toπ^+D^-D^{*0}$. By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of $Zc(3885)^{\mp}$ signal is determined to be greater than 10$σ$, and its pole mass and width are measured to be $M_{\rm{pole}}$=(3881.7$\pm$1.6(stat.)$\pm$1.6(syst.))~MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ_{\rm{pole}}$=(26.6$\pm$2.0(stat.)$\pm$2.1(syst.))~MeV, respectively. The Born cross section times the $(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp}$ branching fraction ($σ(e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}Z_{c}(3885)^{\mp}) \times Br(Z_{c}(3885)^{\mp}\to(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp})$) is measured to be $(141.6\pm7.9(\text{stat.})\pm12.3(\text{syst.}))~\text{pb}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.23$~GeV and $(108.4\pm6.9(\text{stat.})\pm8.8(\text{syst.}))~\text{pb}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26$~GeV. The polar angular distribution of the $π^{\pm}$-$Z_c(3885)^{\mp}$ system is consistent with the expectation of a quantum number assignment of $J^P=1^+$ for $Z_c(3885)^{\mp}$.

Measurement of the proton form factor by studying $e^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}$

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the Born cross section of $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}$ at 12 center-of-mass energies from 2232.4 to 3671.0 MeV. The corresponding effective electromagnetic form factor of the proton is deduced under the assumption that the electric and magnetic form factors are equal $(|G_{E}|= |G_{M}|)$. In addition, the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors, $|G_{E}/G_{M}|$, and $|G_{M}|$ are extracted by fitting the polar angle distribution of the proton for the data samples with larger statistics, namely at $\sqrt{s}=$ 2232.4 and 2400.0 MeV and a combined sample at $\sqrt{s}$ = 3050.0, 3060.0 and 3080.0 MeV, respectively. The measured cross sections are in agreement with recent results from BaBar, improving the overall uncertainty by about 30\%. The $|G_{E}/G_{M}|$ ratios are close to unity and consistent with BaBar results in the same $q^{2}$ region, which indicates the data are consistent with the assumption that $|G_{E}|=|G_{M}|$ within uncertainties.

Observation of a neutral charmoniumlike state $Z_c(4025)^0$ in $e^{+} e^{-} \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{0} π^0$

We report a study of the process $e^{+} e^{-} \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{0} π^0$ using $e^+e^-$ collision data samples with integrated luminosities of $1092 \rm{pb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.23 \rm{GeV}$ and $826 \rm{pb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26 \rm{GeV}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We observe a new neutral structure near the $(D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{0}$ mass threshold in the $π^0$ recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as $Z_{c}(4025)^{0}$. Assuming a Breit-Wigner line shape, its pole mass and pole width are determined to be $(4025.5^{+2.0}_{-4.7}\pm3.1) \rm{MeV}/c^2$ and $(23.0\pm 6.0\pm 1.0) \rm{MeV}$, respectively. The Born cross sections of $e^{+}e^{-}\to Z_{c}(4025)^{0} π^0\to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{0}π^0$ are measured to be $(61.6\pm8.2\pm9.0) \rm{pb}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.23 \rm{GeV}$ and $(43.4\pm8.0\pm5.4) \rm{pb}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26 \rm{GeV}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Observation of a Neutral Structure near the $D\bar{D}^{*}$ Mass Threshold in $e^{+}e^{-}\to (D \bar{D}^*)^0π^0$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.226 and 4.257 GeV

A neutral structure in the $D\bar{D}^{*}$ system around the $D\bar{D}^{*}$ mass threshold is observed with a statistical significance greater than 10$σ$ in the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow D^{+}D^{*-}π^{0}+c.c.$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow D^{0}\bar{D}^{*0}π^{0}+c.c.$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.226 and 4.257 GeV in the BESIII experiment. The structure is denoted as $Z_{c}(3885)^{0}$. Assuming the presence of a resonance, its pole mass and width are determined to be ($3885.7^{+4.3}_{-5.7}$(stat)$\pm 8.4$(syst)) MeV/$c^{2}$ and ($35^{+11}_{-12}$(stat)$ \pm 15$(syst)) MeV, respectively. The Born cross sections are measured to be $σ(e^{+}e^{-}\to Z_{c}(3885)^{0}π^{0}, Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D\bar{D}^{*})=(77 \pm 13$(stat)$\pm 17$(syst)) pb at 4.226 GeV and ($47 \pm 9$(stat)$ \pm 10$(syst)) pb at 4.257 GeV. The ratio of decay rates $\frac{\mathcal{B}({Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D^{+}D^{*-}+c.c.})}{\mathcal{B}({Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D^{0}\bar{D}^{*0}+c.c.})}$ is determined to be $0.96 \pm 0.18$(stat)$\pm 0.12$(syst), consistent with no isospin violation in the process $Z_{c}(3885)^{0}\to D\bar{D}^*$.

Observation of the $ψ(1^3D_2)$ state in $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-γχ_{c1}$ at BESIII

We report the observation of the $X(3823)$ in the process $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-X(3823) \to π^+π^-γχ_{c1}$ with a statistical significance of $6.2σ$, in data samples at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=$4.230, 4.260, 4.360, 4.420 and 4.600~GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII electron positron collider. The measured mass of the $X(3823)$ is $(3821.7\pm 1.3\pm 0.7)$~MeV/$c^2$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic, and the width is less than $16$~MeV at the 90\% confidence level. The products of the Born cross sections for $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-X(3823)$ and the branching ratio $\mathcal{B}[X(3823)\to γχ_{c1,c2}]$ are also measured. These measurements are in good agreement with the assignment of the $X(3823)$ as the $ψ(1^3D_2)$ charmonium state.

Observation of the Dalitz Decay $η' \to γe^+e^-$

We report the first observation of the Dalitz decay $η' \to γe^+e^-$, based on a data sample of 1.31 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The $η'$ mesons are produced via the $J/ψ\to γη'$ decay process. The ratio $Γ(η' \to γe^+ e^-)/Γ(η'\toγγ)$ is measured to be $(2.13\pm0.09(\text{stat.})\pm0.07(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-2}$. This corresponds to a branching fraction ${\cal B}(η' \to γe^+e^-)= (4.69 \pm0.20(\text{stat.})\pm0.23(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-4}$. The transition form factor is extracted and different expressions are compared to the measured dependence on the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass. The results are consistent with the prediction of the Vector Meson Dominance model.

Observation of the electromagnetic doubly OZI-suppressed decay $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}$

Using a sample of $1.31$ billion $J/ψ$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}$, which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic $J/ψ$ decay. A clear structure is observed in the $K^{+} K^{-}$ mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/$c^2$, which can be attributed to interference between $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. The corresponding measured values of the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}$ are $[2.94 \pm 0.16\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.16\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6}$ and $[1.24 \pm 0.33\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.30\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-7}$.

Observation of the isospin-violating decay $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}f_{0}(980)$

Using a sample of 1.31 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decays $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ and $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}π^{0}π^{0}$ are investigated. The isospin violating decay $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0} f_{0}(980)$ with $f_{0}(980) \to ππ$, is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ obtained from the dipion mass spectrum is found to be much smaller than the world average value. In the $π^{0} f_{0}(980)$ mass spectrum, there is evidence of $f_1(1285)$ production. By studying the decay $J/ψ\to ϕη'$, the branching fractions of $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ and $η' \to π^{0}π^{0}π^{0}$, as well as their ratio, are also measured.

Based on 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector, we report searches for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^{+}\toωπ^{+}$ and $D^{0}\toωπ^{0}$. A double tag technique is used to measure the absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(D^{+}\toωπ^{+})=(2.79\pm0.57\pm0.16)\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\toωπ^{0})=(1.17\pm0.34\pm0.07)\times 10^{-4}$, with statistical significances of $5.5σ$ and $4.1σ$, respectively. We also present measurements of the absolute branching fractions for the related $ηπ$ decay modes. We find $\mathcal{B}(D^{+}\toηπ^{+})=(3.07\pm0.22\pm0.13)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\toηπ^{0})=(0.65\pm0.09\pm0.04)\times10^{-3}$, which are consistent with the current world averages. Precision measurement of the $D^{*0}$ decay branching fractions

Using 482 pb$^{-1}$ of data taken at $\sqrt{s}=4.009$ GeV, we measure the branching fractions of the decays of $D^{*0}$ into $D^0π^0$ and $D^0γ$ to be $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)=(65.5\pm 0.8\pm 0.5)%$ and $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ)=(34.5\pm 0.8\pm 0.5)%$ respectively, by assuming that the $D^{*0}$ decays only into these two modes. The ratio of the two branching fractions is $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)/\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ) =1.90\pm 0.07\pm 0.05$, which is independent of the assumption made above. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The precision is improved by a factor of three compared to the present world average values.

Stoichiometry Dependence of Potential Screening at La$_{(1-δ)}$Al$_{(1+δ)}$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ Interfaces

Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and variable kinetic energy x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VKE-XPS) analyses have been performed on 10 unit cell La$_{(1-δ)}$Al$_{(1+δ)}$O$_3$ films, with La:Al ratios of 1.1, 1.0, and 0.9, deposited on SrTiO$_3$. Of the three films, only the Al-rich film was known to have a conductive interface. VKE-XPS, coupled with maximum entropy analysis, shows significant differences in the compositional depth profile between the Al-rich, the La-rich, and stoichiometric films; significant La enrichment at the interface is observed in the La-rich and stoichiometric films, while the Al-rich shows little to no intermixing. Additionally, the La-rich and stoichiometric films show a high concentration of Al at the surface, which is not observed in the Al-rich film. HAXPES valence band (VB) analysis shows a broadening of the VB for the Al-rich sample relative to the stoichiometric and La-rich samples, which have insulating interfaces. This broadening is consistent with an electric field across the Al-rich film. These results are consistent with a defect driven electronic reconstruction.

Study of $e^+e^-\toωχ_{cJ}$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 9 center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV, we search for the production of $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{cJ}$ ($J$=0, 1, 2). The process $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c0}$ is observed for the first time, and the Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=4.23 and 4.26 GeV are measured to be $(55.4\pm 6.0\pm 5.9)$ and $(23.7\pm 5.3\pm 3.5)$ pb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $ωχ_{c0}$ signals at the other 7 energies and $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c1}$ and $ωχ_{c2}$ signals are not significant, and the upper limits on the cross sections are determined. By examining the $ωχ_{c0}$ cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy, we find that it is inconsistent with the line shape of the $Y(4260)$ observed in $e^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$. Assuming the $ωχ_{c0}$ signals come from a single resonance, we extract mass and width of the resonance to be $(4230\pm8\pm6)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(38\pm12\pm2)$ MeV, respectively, and the statistical significance is more than $9σ$.

Study of $χ_{cJ}$ decaying into $ϕ$ $K^*(892)$ $\bar{K}$

Using a data sample of 106 million $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring, we study for the first time the decay $χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{0}_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and $χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{+} K^{-}π^{0}$ in the E1 radiative transition $ψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}$. The decays are dominated by the three-body decay $χ_{cJ}\to ϕK^*(892)\bar{K}$. We measure branching fractions for this reaction via the neutral and charged $K^*(892)$ and find them consistent with each other within the expectation of isospin symmetry. In the $K\bar{K}π$ invariant mass distribution a structure near the $K^*(892)\bar{K}$ mass threshold is observed, and the corresponding mass and width are measured to be $1412\pm4(\mathrm{stat.})\pm8(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}/c^2$ and $Γ$ = $84\pm12(\mathrm{stat.})\pm40(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Using 2.92~fb$^{-1}$ of electron-positron annihilation data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$~GeV with the BESIII detector, we obtain the first measurements of the absolute branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e) = (4.481 \pm 0.027(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.103(\mathrm{sys.}))\%$ and the $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}^{D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e} = (-0.59 \pm 0.60(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 1.48(\mathrm{sys.}))\%$. From the $D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e$ differential decay rate distribution, the product of the hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element, $f_{+}^{K}(0)|V_{cs}|$, is determined to be $0.728 \pm 0.006(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.011(\mathrm{sys.})$. Study of Dynamics of $D^0 \to K^- e^+ ν_{e}$ and $D^0\toπ^- e^+ ν_{e}$ Decays

In an analysis of a 2.92~fb$^{-1}$ data sample taken at 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we measure the absolute decay branching fractions to be $\mathcal B(D^0 \to K^-e^+ν_e)=(3.505\pm 0.014 \pm 0.033)\%$ and $\mathcal B(D^0 \to π^-e^+ν_e)=(0.295\pm 0.004\pm 0.003)\%$. From a study of the differential decay rates we obtain the products of hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element $f_{+}^K(0)|V_{cs}|=0.7172\pm0.0025\pm 0.0035$ and $f_{+}^π(0)|V_{cd}|=0.1435\pm0.0018\pm 0.0009$. Combining these products with the values of $|V_{cs(d)}|$ from the SM constraint fit, we extract the hadronic form factors $f^K_+(0) = 0.7368\pm0.0026\pm 0.0036$ and $f^π_+(0) = 0.6372\pm0.0080\pm 0.0044$, and their ratio $f_+^π(0)/f_+^{K}(0)=0.8649\pm 0.0112\pm 0.0073$. These form factors and their ratio are used to test unquenched Lattice QCD calculations of the form factors and a light cone sum rule (LCSR) calculation of their ratio. The measured value of $f_+^{K(π)}(0) |V_{cs(d)}|$ and the lattice QCD value for $f^{K(π)}_+(0)$ are used to extract values of the CKM matrix elements of $|V_{cs}|=0.9601 \pm 0.0033 \pm 0.0047 \pm 0.0239$ and $|V_{cd}|=0.2155 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0014 \pm 0.0094$, where the third errors are due to the uncertainties in lattice QCD calculations of the form factors. Using the LCSR value for $f_+^π(0)/f_+^K(0)$, we determine the ratio $|V_{cd}|/|V_{cs}|=0.238\pm 0.004\pm 0.002\pm 0.011$, where the third error is from the uncertainty in the LCSR normalization. In addition, we measure form factor parameters for three different theoretical models that describe the weak hadronic charged currents for these two semileptonic decays. All of these measurements are the most precise to date.

The $^{136}$Xe + $^{208}$Pb reaction: A test of models of multi-nucleon transfer reactions

The yields of over 200 projectile-like fragments (PLFs) and target-like fragments (TLFs) from the interaction of (E$_{c.m.}$=450 MeV) $^{136}$Xe with a thick target of $^{208}$Pb were measured using Gammasphere and off-line $γ$-ray spectroscopy, giving a comprehensive picture of the production cross sections in this reaction. The measured yields were compared to predictions of the GRAZING model and the predictions of Zagrebaev and Greiner using a quantitative metric, the theory evaluation factor, {\bf tef}. The GRAZING model predictions are adequate for describing the yields of nuclei near the target or projectile but grossly underestimate the yields of all other products. The predictions of Zagrebaev and Greiner correctly describe the magnitude and maxima of the observed TLF transfer cross sections for a wide range of transfers ($Δ$Z = -8 to $Δ$Z = +2). However for $Δ$Z =+4, the observed position of the maximum in the distribution is four neutrons richer than the predicted maximum. The predicted yields of the neutron-rich N=126 nuclei exceed the measured values by two orders of magnitude. Correlations between TLF and PLF yields are discussed.

The role of the g9/2 orbital in the development of collectivity in the A = 60 region: The case of 61Co

An extensive study of the level structure of 61Co has been performed following the complex 26Mg(48Ca, 2a4npg)61Co reaction at beam energies of 275, 290 and 320 MeV using Gammasphere and the Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA). The low-spin structure is discussed within the framework of shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A effective interaction. Two quasi-rotational bands consisting of stretched-E2 transitions have been established up to spins I = 41/2 and (43/2), and excitation energies of 17 and 20 MeV, respectively. These are interpreted as signature partners built on a neutron ν(g9/2)2 configuration coupled to a proton πp3/2 state, based on Cranked Shell Model (CSM) calculations and comparisons with observations in neighboring nuclei. In addition, four I = 1 bands were populated to high spin, with the yrast dipole band interpreted as a possible candidate for the shears mechanism, a process seldom observed thus far in this mass region.

Constraints on Very High Energy Emission from GRB 130427A

Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z=0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope for ~70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that the high-energy emission may instead be an extension of the synchrotron spectrum. VERITAS, a ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, began follow-up observations of GRB 130427A ~71 ks (~20 hr) after the onset of the burst. The GRB was not detected with VERITAS; however, the high elevation of the observations, coupled with the low redshift of the GRB, make VERITAS a very sensitive probe of the emission from GRB 130427A for E > 100 GeV. The non-detection and consequent upper limit derived place constraints on the synchrotron self-Compton model of high-energy gamma-ray emission from this burst.

The Born cross sections $σ^{B}(e^+e^-\toγχ_{cJ})$, as well as their upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined at each center-of-mass energy.

Measurement of the Survival Probabilities for Hot Fusion Reactions

We have studied the fission-neutron emission competition in highly excited $^{274}$Hs (Z=108) (where the fission barrier is due to shell effects) formed by a hot fusion reaction. Matching cross bombardments ($^{26}$Mg + $^{248}$Cm and $^{25}$Mg + $^{248}$Cm) were used to identify the properties of first chance fission of $^{274}$Hs. A Harding-Farley analysis of the fission neutrons emitted in the $^{25,26}$Mg + $^{248}$Cm was performed to identify the pre- and post-scission components of the neutron multiplicities in each system. ($Γ$$_{n}$/$Γ$$_{t}$) for the first chance fission of $^{274}$Hs (E$^{\ast}$ = 63 MeV) is 0.89 $\pm$ 0.13, i.e., $\sim$ 90 $%$ of the highly excited nuclei survive. The high value of that survival probability is due to dissipative effects during de-excitation. A proper description of the survival probabilities of excited superheavy nuclei formed in hot fusion reactions requires consideration of both dynamic and static (shell-related) effects.

Nuclear Structure Towards N=40 60Ca: In-beam gamma-ray Spectroscopy of 58,60Ti

Excited states in the neutron-rich N=38,36 nuclei \nuc{60}{Ti} and \nuc{58}{Ti} were populated in nucleon-removal reactions from \nuc{61}{V} projectiles at 90~MeV/nucleon. The γ-ray transitions from such states in these Ti isotopes were detected with the advanced γ-ray tracking array GRETINA and were corrected event-by-event for large Doppler shifts (v/c \sim 0.4) using the γ-ray interaction points deduced from online signal decomposition. The new data indicate that a steep decrease in quadrupole collectivity occurs when moving from neutron-rich N=36,38 Fe and Cr toward the Ti and Ca isotones. In fact, \nuc{58,60}{Ti} provide some of the most neutron-rich benchmarks accessible today for calculations attempting to determine the structure of the potentially doubly-magic nucleus \nuc{60}{Ca}.

Shape coexistence in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes studied via lifetime measurements in $^{184,186}$Hg and two-state mixing calculations

The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes, $^{184,186}$Hg, were studied with the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method using the Gammasphere array and the Köln Plunger device. The Differential Decay Curve Method (DDCM) was employed to determine the lifetimes of the yrast states in $^{184,186}$Hg. An improvement on previously measured values of yrast states up to $8^{+}$ is presented as well as first values for the $9_{3}$ state in $^{184}$Hg and $10^{+}$ state in $^{186}$Hg. $B(E2)$ values are calculated and compared to a two-state mixing model which utilizes the variable moment of inertia (VMI) model, allowing for extraction of spin-dependent mixing strengths and amplitudes.

Study of J/psi->eta phi pi+pi- at BESIII

Based on a sample of $2.25\times 10^{8} J/ψ$ events taken with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present the results of a study of the decay $J/ψ\to ηϕπ^{+}π^{-}$. The $Y(2175)$ resonance is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of $ϕf_{0}(980)$ with a statistical significance of greater than $10σ$. The corresponding mass and width are determined to be $M=2200\pm 6 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 5\mathrm{(syst.)} \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}$ and $Γ=104\pm 15\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 15\mathrm{(syst.)}$ MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toηY(2175)$, $Y(2175)\to ϕf_{0}(980)$, $f_{0}(980)\to π^{+}π^{-})= (1.20\pm 0.14\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.37 \mathrm{(syst.)})\times 10^{-4}$. The results are consistent within errors with those of previous experiments. We also measure the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ϕf_1(1285)$ with $f_1(1285)\to ηπ^{+}π^{-}$ and set upper limits on the branching fractions for $J/ψ\to ϕη(1405)$/$ϕX(1835)$/$ϕX(1870)$ with $η(1405)$/$X(1835)$/$X(1870)\to ηπ^{+}π^{-}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

Effect of Heavy-Ion Irradiation on Superconductivity in Single Crystals of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 Pnictide Superconductor

The London penetration depth was measured in optimally doped Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 crystals, with and without columnar defects produced by 1.4 GeV 208Pb irradiation. The low temperature behavior of unirradiated samples was consistent with a fully gapped superconducting state with a minimum energy gap delta_min/(k_B T_C) = 1. Similar gap values were observed for irradiation levels corresponding to mean column-column separations of 32 nm and 22 nm. At very high irradiation levels (column-column separation of 10 nm) a T^2 power law was observed below Tc/3, most likely due to elevated scattering. Neither the location nor the sharpness of the superconducting transition was affected by irradiation. The data provides evidence for an s+/- pairing state.

Evidence for Multiple Chiral Doublet Bands in $^{133}$Ce

Two distinct sets of chiral-partner bands have been identified in the nucleus $^{133}$Ce. They constitute a multiple chiral doublet (M$χ$D), a phenomenon predicted by relativistic mean field (RMF) calculations and observed experimentally here for the first time. The properties of these chiral bands are in good agreement with results of calculations based on a combination of the constrained triaxial RMF theory and the particle-rotor model.

High Fidelity Qubit Readout with the Superconducting Low-Inductance Undulatory Galvanometer Microwave Amplifier

We describe the high fidelity dispersive measurement of a superconducting qubit using a microwave amplifier based on the Superconducting Low-inductance Undulatory Galvanometer (SLUG). The SLUG preamplifier achieves gain of 19 dB and yields a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of 9 dB over a state-of-the-art HEMT amplifier. We demonstrate a separation fidelity of 99% at 700 ns compared to 59% with the HEMT alone. The SLUG displays a large dynamic range, with an input saturation power corresponding to 700 photons in the readout cavity.

High-spin transition quadrupole moments in neutron-rich Mo and Ru nuclei: testing $γ$ softness?

The transition quadrupole moments, $Q_{t}$, of rotational bands in the neutron-rich, even-mass $^{102-108}$Mo and $^{108-112}$Ru nuclei were measured in the 8 to 16 $\hbar $ spin range with the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nuclei were populated as fission fragments from $^{252}$Cf fission. The detector setup consisted of the Gammasphere spectrometer and the HERCULES fast-plastic array. At moderate spin, the $Q_{t}$ moments are found to be reduced with respect to the values near the ground states. Attempts to describe the observations in mean-field-based models, specifically cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory, illustrate the challenge theory faces and the difficulty to infer information on $γ$ softness and triaxiality from the data.

Measurement of the Fusion Probability, PCN, for Hot Fusion Reactions

Background: The cross section for forming a heavy evaporation residue in fusion reactions depends on the capture cross section, the fusion probability, PCN, i.e., the probability that the projectile-target system will evolve inside the fission saddle point to form a completely fused system rather than re-separating (quasifission), and the survival of the completely fused system against fission. PCN is the least known of these quantities. Purpose: To measure PCN for the reaction of 101.2 MeV 18O, 147.3 MeV 26Mg, 170.9 MeV 30Si and 195.3 MeV 36S with 197Au. Methods: We measured the fission fragment angular distributions for these reactions and used the formalism of Back to deduce the fusion-fission and quasifission cross sections. From these quantities we deduced PCN for each reaction. Results: The values of PCN for the reaction of 101.2 MeV 18O, 147.3 MeV 26Mg, 170.9 MeV 30Si and 195.3 MeV 36S with 197Au are 0.66, 1.00, 0.06, 0.13, respectively. Conclusions: The new measured values of PCN agree roughly with the semi-empirical system- atic dependence of PCN upon fissility for excited nuclei.

Surface Morphology and Phase Stability of Titanium Foils Irradiated by 136 MeV 136Xe

A stack of titanium foils was irradiated with 136 MeV 136Xe to study microstructure damage and phase stability of titanium upon irradiation. X- ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to study the resulting microstructure damage and phase stability of titanium. We observed the phase transfor- mation of polycrystalline titanium from alpha-Ti (hexagonally closed packed (hcp)) to face centered cubic (fcc) after irradiation with 2.2 x 1015 ions/cm2. Irradiation of Ti with 1.8 x 1014-2.2 x 1015 ions/cm2 resulted in the forma- tion of voids, hillocks, dislocation loops, dislocation lines, as well as polygonal ridge networks.

The First Pulse of the Extremely Bright GRB 130427A: A Test Lab for Synchrotron Shocks

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A is one of the most energetic GRBs ever observed. The initial pulse up to 2.5 s is possibly the brightest well-isolated pulse observed to date. A fine time resolution spectral analysis shows power-law decays of the peak energy from the onset of the pulse, consistent with models of internal synchrotron shock pulses. However, a strongly correlated power-law behavior is observed between the luminosity and the spectral peak energy that is inconsistent with curvature effects arising in the relativistic outflow. It is difficult for any of the existing models to account for all of the observed spectral and temporal behaviors simultaneously.

Tidal Waves in $^{102}$Pd: A Rotating Condensate of Multiple $d$ bosons

Low-lying collective excitations in even-even vibrational and transitional nuclei may be described semi-classically as quadrupole running waves on the surface of the nucleus ("tidal waves"), and the observed vibrational-rotational behavior can be thought of as resulting from a rotating condensate of interacting $d$ bosons. These concepts have been investigated by measuring lifetimes of the levels in the yrast band of the $^{102}$Pd nucleus with the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The extracted $B(E2)$ reduced transition probabilities for the yrast band display a monotonic increase with spin, in agreement with the interpretation based on rotation-induced condensation of aligned $d$ bosons.

Nature of yrast excitations near N=40: Level structure of Ni-67

Excited states in Ni-67 were populated in deep-inelastic reactions of a Ni-64 beam at 430 MeV on a thick U-238 target. A level scheme built on the previously known 13 micro-s isomer has been delineated up to an excitation energy of ~5.3 MeV and a tentative spin and parity of (21/2-). Shell model calculations have been carried out using two effective interactions in the f5/2pg9/2 model space with a Ni-56 core. Satisfactory agreement between experiment and theory is achieved for the measured transition energies and branching ratios. The calculations indicate that the yrast states are associated with rather complex configurations, herewith demonstrating the relative weakness of the N=40 subshell gap and the importance of multi particle-hole excitations involving the g9/2 neutron orbital.

On the lifetime of the 2+ state in 10C

The lifetime of the J=2+ state in 10C was measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method following the inverse kinematics p(10B,n)10C reaction at 95 MeV. The 2+ state, at 3354 keV, has tau = 219\pm(7)stat \pm(10)sys fs corresponding to a B(E2) # of 8.8(3) e2fm4. This measurement, combined with that recently determined for 10Be (9.2(3) e2fm4), provides a unique challenge to abinitio calculations, testing the structure of these states, including the isospin symmetry of the wave functions. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations using realistic two- and three-nucleon Hamiltonians that reproduce the 10Be B(E2) value generally predict a larger 10C B(E2) probability but with considerable sensitivity to the admixture of different spatial symmetry components in the wave functions, and to the three-nucleon potential used.

Quadrupole Moments of Collective Structures up to Spin $\sim$ $65\hbar$ in $^{157}$Er and $^{158}$Er: A Challenge for Understanding Triaxiality in Nuclei

The transition quadrupole moments, $Q_{\rm t}$, of four weakly populated collective bands up to spin $\sim$ $65\hbar$ in $^{157,158}$Er have been measured to be ${\sim}11 {\rm eb}$ demonstrating that these sequences are associated with large deformations. However, the data are inconsistent with calculated values from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations that predict the lowest energy triaxial shape to be associated with rotation about the short principal axis. The data appear to favor either a stable triaxial shape rotating about the intermediate axis or, alternatively, a triaxial shape with larger deformation rotating about the short axis. These new results challenge the present understanding of triaxiality in nuclei.

SLUG Microwave Amplifier: Theory

We describe a novel scheme for low-noise phase-insensitive linear amplification at microwave frequencies based on the Superconducting Low-inductance Undulatory Galvanometer (SLUG). Direct integration of the junction equations of motion provides access to the full scattering matrix of the SLUG. We discuss the optimization of SLUG amplifiers and calculate amplifier gain and noise temperature in both the thermal and quantum regimes. Loading of the SLUG element by the finite input admittance is taken into account, and strategies for decoupling the SLUG from the higher-order modes of the input circuit are discussed. The microwave SLUG amplifier is expected to achieve noise performance approaching the standard quantum limit in the frequency range from 5-10 GHz, with gain around 15 dB for a single-stage device and instantaneous bandwidths of order 1 GHz.

Superconducting Low-Inductance Undulatory Galvanometer Microwave Amplifier

We describe a microwave amplifier based on the Superconducting Low-inductance Undulatory Galvanometer (SLUG). The SLUG is embedded in a microstrip resonator, and the signal current is injected directly into the device loop. Measurements at 30 mK show gains of 25 dB at 3 GHz and 15 dB at 9 GHz. Amplifier performance is well described by a simple numerical model based on the Josephson junction phase dynamics. We expect optimized devices based on high critical current junctions to achieve gain greater than 15 dB, bandwidth of several hundred MHz, and added noise of order one quantum in the frequency range of 5-10 GHz.

Multi-quasiparticle structures up to spin $\sim{44}\hbar$ in the odd-odd nucleus $^{168}$Ta

High-spin states in the odd-odd nucleus $^{168}$Ta have been populated in the $^{120}$Sn($^{51}$V,3n) reaction. Two multi-quasiparticle structures have been extended significantly from spin $\sim{20\hbar}$ to above ${40\hbar}$. As a result, the first rotational alignment has been fully delineated and a second band crossing has been observed for the first time in this nucleus. Configurations for these strongly-coupled rotational bands are proposed based on signature splitting, $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratio information, and observed rotation-alignment behavior. Properties of the observed bands in $^{168}$Ta are compared to related structures in the neighboring odd-$Z$, odd-$N$, and odd-odd nuclei and are discussed within the framework of the cranked shell model.

Precise electromagnetic tests of ab-initio calculations of light nuclei: States in $^{10}$Be

In order to test {\it ab-initio} calculations of light nuclei, we have remeasured lifetimes in $^{10}$Be using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) following the $^{7}$Li($^7$Li,$α$)$^{10}$Be reaction at 8 and 10 MeV. The new experiments significantly reduce systematic uncertainties in the DSAM technique. The J$^π$ = $2^+_1$ state at 3.37 MeV has $τ$ = 205${\pm}$(5)$_{stat}\pm$(7)$_{sys}$ fs corresponding to a $B$($E2\downarrow$) of 9.2(3) $e^2$fm$^4$ in broad agreement with many calculations. The J$^π$ = $2^+_2$ state at 5.96 MeV was found to have a $B$($E2\downarrow$) of 0.11(2) $e^2$fm$^4$ and provides a more discriminating test of nuclear models. New Green's Function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations for these states and transitions with a number of Hamiltonians are also reported and compared to experiment.

Structure of $^{240}$Pu: Evidence for Octupole Phonon Condensation?

The expanded level structure of $^{240}$Pu available from the present study highlights the role of strong octupole correlations in this nucleus. Besides a delayed alignment in the yrast band, the observations include the presence of both $I^{+}{\to}(I-1)^{-}$ and $I^{-}{\to}(I-1)^{+}$ E1 transitions linking states of the yrast and negative-parity bands at high spin and the presence of an additional even-spin, positive-parity band deexciting exclusively to the negative parity sequence. The observations appear to be consistent with expectations based on the recently proposed concept of octupole phonon condensation.
