Charge transfer energy in iridates: a hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study

We have investigated the electronic structure of iridates in the double perovskite crystal structure containing either Ir$^{4+}$ or Ir$^{5+}$ using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental valence band spectra can be well reproduced using tight binding calculations including only the Ir $5d$, O $2p$ and O $2s$ orbitals with parameters based on the downfolding of the density-functional band structure results. We found that regardless of the A and B cations, the A$_2$BIrO$_6$ iridates have essentially zero O $2p$ to Ir $5d$ charge transfer energies. Hence, double perovskite iridates turn out to be extremely covalent systems with the consequence being that the magnetic exchange interactions become very long-ranged, thereby hampering the materialization of the long-sought Kitaev physics. Nevertheless, it still would be possible to realize a spin-liquid system using the iridates with a proper tuning of the various competing exchange interactions.

Kramer doublets, phonons, crystal-field excitations and their coupling in Nd2ZnIrO6

We report comprehensive Raman-scattering measurements on a single crystal of double-perovskite Nd2ZnIrO6 in temperature range of 4-330 K, and spanning a broad spectral range from 20 cm-1 to 5500 cm-1. The paper focuses on lattice vibrations and electronic transitions involving Kramers doublets of the rare-earth Nd3+ ion with local C1 site symmetry. Temperature evolution of these quasi-particle excitations have allowed us to ascertain the intricate coupling between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom in Nd2ZnIrO6. Strong coupling between phonons and crystal-field excitation is observed via renormalization of the self-energy parameter of the phonons i.e. peak frequency and line-width. The phonon frequency shows abrupt hardening and line-width narrowing below ~ 100 K for the majority of the observed first-order phonons. We observed splitting of the lowest Kramers doublets of ground state (4I9/2) multiplets i.e. lifting of the Kramers degeneracy, prominently at low-temperature (below ~ 100 K), attributed to the Nd-Nd/Ir exchange interactions and the intricate coupling with the lattice degrees of freedom. The observed splitting is of the order of ~ 2-3 meV and is consistent with the estimated value. We also observed a large number of high-energy modes, 46 in total, attributed to the intra-configurational transitions between 4f3 levels of Nd3+ coupled to the phonons reflected in their anomalous temperature evolution.

Magnetic interactions in the tripod-kagome antiferromagnet Mg$_{2}$Gd$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ probed by static magnetometry and high-field ESR spectroscopy

We report an experimental study of the static magnetization $M(H,T)$ and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of polycrystalline \MgGd, a representative member of the newly discovered class of the so-called tripod-kagome antiferromagnets where the isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ spins ($S = 7/2$) form a two-dimensional kagome spin-frustrated lattice. It follows from the analysis of the low-$T$ $M(H)$-curves that the Gd$^{3+}$ spins are coupled by a small isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interaction $|J| \approx$ 0.3\,K. The $M(H,T)$-dependences measured down to 0.5\,K evidence a long-range AFM order at $T_{\text{N}} = 1.7$\,K and its rapid suppression at higher fields $\geq 4$\,T. ESR spectra measured in fields up to 15\,T are analyzed considering possible effects of demagnetizing fields, single-ion anisotropy and spin-spin correlations. While the demagnetization effects due to a large sample magnetization in high fields and its shape anisotropy become relevant at low temperatures, the broadening of the ESR line commencing already at $T\lesssim 30$\,K may indicate the onset of the spin-spin correlations far above the ordering temperature due to the geometrical spin frustration in this compound.

Complex magnetic properties in the mixed 4f -5d double perovskite iridates Ln2ZnIrO6 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu & Gd)

In this work, we report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of double perovskites Ln$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ with Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu & Gd. These compounds present new examples of the rare case of double perovskites (general formula A$_2$BB'O$_6$) with a magnetic 4f -ion on the A-site in combination with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal ion Ir$^{4+}$ on the B-sublattice. We discuss the impact of different rare earths on the macroscopic magnetic properties. Gd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ and Eu$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ show weak canted antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$ = 23 K and T$_N$ = 12 K, respectively. Sm$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ orders antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ = 13 K. Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ exhibits complex magnetic properties with strong field dependence ranging from a two-step behavior at H = 0.01 T to an antiferromagnetic ground state at intermediate external fields and a spin-flop phase at H$\geq$4 T, which suggests complex interplay between Nd$^{3+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ . To further shed light on this magnetic interaction, the magnetic structure of Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$'s ground state is examined via neutron powder diffraction.

Kitaev Magnetism and Fractionalized Excitations in Double Perovskite Sm2ZnIrO6

The quest for Kitaev spin liquids in particular three dimensional solids is long sought goal in condensed matter physics, as these states may give rise to exotic new types of quasi-particle excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers namely Majorana Fermionic excitations. Here we report the experimental signature of this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid via Raman measurements. Sm2ZnIrO6 is a strongly spin orbit coupled Mott insulator, where Jeff = 1/2 controls the physics, which provide striking evidence for this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid. As the temperature is lowered, we find that the spin excitations form a continuum in contrast to the conventional sharp modes expected in ordered antiferromagnets. Our observation of a broad magnetic continuum and anomalous renormalization of the phonon self-energy parameters evidence the existence of Majorana fermions from spin fractionalization in double perovskites structure as theoretically conjectured in a Kitaev-Heisenberg geometrically frustrated double perovskite systems.

Strong Spin Resonance Mode associated with suppression of soft magnetic ordering in Hole-doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2

Spin-resonance modes (SRM) are taken as evidence for magnetically driven pairing in Fe-based superconductors, but their character remains poorly understood. The broadness, the splitting and the spin-space anisotropies of SRMs contrast with the mostly accepted interpretation as spin excitons. We study hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ that displays a spin reorientation transition. This reorientation has little impact on the overall appearance of the resonance excitations with a high-energy isotropic and a low-energy anisotropic mode. However, the strength of the anisotropic low-energy mode sharply peaks at the highest doping that still exhibits magnetic ordering resulting in the strongest SRM observed in any Fe-based superconductor so far. This remarkably strong SRM is accompanied by a loss of about half of the magnetic Bragg intensity upon entering the SC phase. Anisotropic SRMs thus can allow the system to compensate for the loss of exchange energy arising from the reduced antiferromagnetic correlations within the SC state.

Ba2YIrO6: A cubic double perovskite material with Ir5+ ions

Materials with a 5d4 electronic configuration are generally considered to have a nonmagnetic ground state (J=0). Interestingly, Sr2YIrO6 (Ir5+ having 5d4 electronic configuration) was recently reported to exhibit long-range magnetic order at low temperature and the distorted IrO6 octahedra were discussed to cause the magnetism in this material. Hence, a comparison of structurally distorted Sr2YIrO6 with cubic Ba2YIrO6 may shed light on the source of magnetism in such Ir5+ materials with 5d4 configuration. Besides, Ir5+ materials having 5d4 are also interesting in the context of recently predicted excitonic types of magnetism. Here we report a single-crystal-based analysis of the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Ba2YIrO6. We observe that in Ba2YIrO6 for temperatures down to 0.4 K, long-range magnetic order is absent but at the same time correlated magnetic moments are present. We show that these moments are absent in fully relativistic ab initio band-structure calculations; hence, their origin is presently unclear.

Competing effects of Mn and Y doping on the low-energy excitations and phase diagram of La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ iron-based superconductors

Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) and $^{19}$F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements were performed to investigate the effect of Mn for Fe substitutions in La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors. While for $y = 0$ a very low critical concentration of Mn ($x = 0.2$%) is needed to quench superconductivity, as $y$ increases the negative chemical pressure introduced by Y for La substitution stabilizes superconductivity and for $y= 20$% it is suppressed at Mn contents an order of magnitude larger. A magnetic phase arises once superconductivity is suppressed both for $y$=0 and for $y= 20$%. Low-energy spin fluctuations give rise to a peak in $^{19}$F NMR $1/T_1$ with an onset well above the superconducting transition temperature and whose magnitude increases with $x$. Also the static magnetic correlations probed by $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show a marked increase with Mn content. The disruption of superconductivity and the onset of the magnetic ground-state are discussed in the light of the proximity of LaFeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ to a quantum critical point.

Non-collinear antiferromagnetism of coupled spins and pseudospins in the double perovskite La2CuIrO6

We report the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the double perovskite compound La2CuIrO6 from X-ray, neutron diffraction, neutron depolarization, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, muon-spin-relaxation (uSR), electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Below ~113 K, short-range spin-spin correlations occur within the Cu2+ sublattice. With decreasing temperature, the Ir4+ sublattice progressively involves in the correlation process. Below T = 74 K, the magnetic sublattices of Cu (spin s = 1/2) and Ir (pseudospin j = 1/2) in La2CuIrO6 are strongly coupled and exhibit an antiferromagnetic phase transition into a non-collinear magnetic structure accompanied by a small uncompensated transverse moment. A weak anomaly in ac-susceptibility as well as in the NMR and μSR spin lattice relaxation rates at 54 K is interpreted as a cooperative ordering of the transverse moments which is influenced by the strong spin-orbit coupled 5d ion Ir4+. We argue that the rich magnetic behaviour observed in La2CuIrO6 is related to complex magnetic interactions between the strongly correlated spin-only 3d ions with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition ions where a combination of the spin-orbit coupling and the low-symmetry of the crystal lattice plays a special role for the spin structure in the magnetically ordered state.

Role of magnetic dopants in the phase diagram of Sm1111 pnictides: The Mn case

The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally-doped SmFeAsO0.88-F0.12 iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents (x) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy (muSR), both in zero- and in transverse fields, respectively, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order. The pure superconducting phase (at x < 0.03) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values (0.03 =< x < 0.08), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for x = 0.08, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of Tc and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors [M. Gastiasoro et al., ArXiv 1606.09495], which includes correlation-enhanced RKKY-couplings between the impurity moments.

Weak-coupling superconductivity in a strongly correlated iron pnictide

Iron-based superconductors have been found to exhibit an intimate interplay of orbital, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom, dramatically affecting their low-energy electronic properties, including superconductivity. Albeit the precise pairing mechanism remains unidentified, several candidate interactions have been suggested to mediate the superconducting pairing, both in the orbital and in the spin channel. Here, we employ optical spectroscopy (OS), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), ab initio band-structure, and Eliashberg calculations to show that nearly optimally doped NaFe$_{0.978}$Co$_{0.022}$As exhibits some of the strongest orbitally selective electronic correlations in the family of iron pnictides. Unexpectedly, we find that the mass enhancement of itinerant charge carriers in the strongly correlated band is dramatically reduced near the $Γ$ point and attribute this effect to orbital mixing induced by pronounced spin-orbit coupling. Embracing the true band structure allows us to describe all low-energy electronic properties obtained in our experiments with remarkable consistency and demonstrate that superconductivity in this material is rather weak and mediated by spin fluctuations.

Acoustic signatures of the phases and phase transitions in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report on measurements of the sound velocity and attenuation in a single crystal of the candidate quantum- spin-ice material Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The acoustic modes couple to the spins magneto-elastically and, hence, carry information about the spin correlations that sheds light on the intricate magnetic phase diagram of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and the nature of spin dynamics in the material. Particularly, we find a pronounced thermal hysteresis in the acoustic data with a concomitant peak in the specific heat indicating a possible first-order phase transition at about $0.17$ K. At low temperatures, the acoustic response to magnetic field saturates hinting at the development of magnetic order. Furthermore, mean-field calculations suggest that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a first-order phase transition from a cooperative paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnet below $T\approx 0.17$ K.

Cu NMR study of a Pb-doped Bi:2201 single crystal

A 63Cu NMR study of Pb-doped Bi:2201 system, Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2.05CuOy, is presented. Temperature dependencies of the NMR peak shift and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate revealed the pseudogap that opens at T* = 20 - 60 K, way above the Tc ~ 9K measured for the orientation (H//c) and value (7 T) of the NMR experiment field. The noticeable discrepancy between Tc and T* and the behavior of Cu SLR at T > T* imply the underdoped state of the studied system. The magnetic field has a relatively weak effect on the superconductivity in the studied system, as evidenced from small (7-8 K) shift of the zero-field Tc = 16+/- 1K under the applied 7 T field. This fact suggests a high value of the upper critical field, unusual for a compound with such low Tc.

Enhancement of low-frequency fluctuations and superconductivity breakdown in Mn-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$FeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors

$^{19}$F NMR measurements in optimally electron-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors are presented. In these materials the effect of Mn doping on the superconducting phase is studied for two series of compounds ($y= 0$ and $y= 0.2$) where the chemical pressure is varied by substituting La with Y. In the $y=0.2$ series superconductivity is suppressed for Mn contents an order of magnitude larger than for the $y=0$ series. For both series a peak in the $^{19}$F NMR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ emerges upon Mn doping and gets significantly enhanced on approaching the quantum phase transition between the superconducting and magnetic phases. $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show that for similar Mn contents magnetic correlations are more pronounced in the $y=0$ series, at variance with what one would expect for $\vec Q=(π/a,0)$ spin correlations. These observations suggest that Mn doping tends to reduce fluctuations at $\vec Q=(π/a,0)$ and to enhance other low-frequency modes. The effect of this transfer of spectral weight on the superconducting pairing is discussed along with the charge localization induced by Mn.

Mutual independence of critical temperature and superfluid density under pressure in optimally electron-doped superconducting LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

The superconducting properties of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ in conditions of optimal electron-doping are investigated upon the application of external pressure up to $\sim 23$ kbar. Measurements of muon-spin spectroscopy and dc magnetometry evidence a clear mutual independence between the critical temperature $T_{c}$ and the low-temperature saturation value for the ratio $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superfluid density over effective band mass of Cooper pairs). Remarkably, a dramatic increase of $\sim 30$ % is reported for $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at the maximum pressure value while $T_{c}$ is substantially unaffected in the whole accessed experimental window. We argue and demonstrate that the explanation for the observed results must take the effect of non-magnetic impurities on multi-band superconductivity into account. In particular, the unique possibility to modify the ratio between intra-band and inter-bands scattering rates by acting on structural parameters while keeping the amount of chemical disorder constant is a striking result of our proposed model.

Non-Fermi-liquid scattering rates and anomalous band dispersion in ferropnictides

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the band dispersion and the quasiparticle scattering rates in two ferropnictides systems. Our ARPES results show linear-in-energy dependent scattering rates which are constant in a wide range of control parameter and which depend on the orbital character of the bands. We demonstrate that the linear energy dependence gives rise to weakly dispersing band with a strong mass enhancement when the band maximum crosses the chemical potential. In the superconducting phase the related small effective Fermi energy favors a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)\,\cite{Bardeen1957}-Bose-Einstein (BE)\,\cite{Bose1924} crossover state.

Nuclear magnetic resonance study of thin Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ Heusler films with varying thickness

Type, degree and evolution of structural order are important aspects for understanding and controlling the properties of highly spin polarized Heusler compounds, in particular with respect to the optimal film growth procedure. In this work, we compare the structural order and the local magnetic properties revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with the macroscopic properties of thin Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ Heusler films with varying thickness. A detailed analysis of the measured NMR spectra presented in this paper enables us to find a very high degree of $L2_1$ type ordering up to 81% concomitantly with excess Fe of 8 to 13% at the expense of Al and Si. We show, that the formation of certain types of order do not only depend on the thermodynamic phase diagrams as in bulk samples, but that the kinetic control may contribute to the phase formation in thin films. It is an exciting finding that Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ can form an almost ideal $L2_1$ structure in films though with a considerable amount of Fe-Al/Si off-stoichiometry. Moreover, the very good quality of the films as demonstrated by our NMR study suggests that the novel technique of off-axis sputtering technique used to grow the films sets stage for the optimized performance of Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ in spintronic devices.

Spatial competition of the ground states in 1111 iron pnictides

Using nuclear quadrupole resonance, the phase diagram of 1111 $R$FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($R$$=$La, Ce, Sm) iron pnictides is constructed as a function of the local charge distribution in the paramagnetic state, which features low-doping-like (LD-like) and high-doping-like (HD-like) regions. Compounds based on magnetic rare earths (Ce, Sm) display a unified behavior, and comparison with La-based compounds reveals the detrimental role of static iron $3d$ magnetism on superconductivity, as well as a qualitatively different evolution of the latter at high doping. It is found that the LD-like regions fully account for the orthorhombicity of the system, and are thus the origin of any static iron magnetism. Orthorhombicity and static magnetism are not hindered by superconductivity but limited by dilution effects, in agreement with 2D (respectively 3D) nearest-neighbor square lattice site percolation when the rare earth is nonmagnetic (respectively magnetic). The LD-like regions are not intrinsically supportive of superconductivity, on the contrary of the HD-like regions, as evidenced by the well-defined Uemura relation between the superconducting transition temperature and the superfluid density when accounting for the proximity effect. This leads us to propose a complete description of the interplay of ground states in 1111 pnictides, where nanoscopic regions compete to establish the ground state through suppression of superconductivity by static magnetism, and extension of superconductivity by proximity effect.

Unusual temperature evolution of superconductivity in LiFeAs

We have performed temperature dependent tunneling spectroscopy on an impurity-free surface area of a LiFeAs single crystal. Our data reveal a highly unusual temperature evolution of superconductivity: at $T_c^*=18$~K a partial superconducting gap opens, as is evidenced by subtle, yet clear features in the tunneling spectra, i.e. particle-hole symmetric coherence peaks, and a dip-hump structure which signals strong-coupling superconductivity. At $T_c=16$~K, these features substantiate dramatically and become characteristic of full superconductivity. Remarkably, this is accompanied by an almost jump-like increase of the gap energy at $T_c$ to about 87\% of its low-temperature gap value. The energy of the bosonic mode as measured by the distance between the coherence peak and the higher-energy dip remains practically constant in the whole temperature regime $T\leq T_c^*$. The comparison of these findings with established experimental and theoretical results lead us to suggest that the bosonic mode is not directly related to incommensurate spin fluctuations that have previously been observed in inelastic neutron scattering.

Exploring of point-contact spectra of Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 in the normal and superconducting state

We present study of derivatives of current-voltage I(V) characteristics of point-contacts (PCs) based on Ba{1-x}Na{x}Fe2As2 (x=0.25) in the normal and superconducting state. The detailed analysis of dV/dI(V) data (also given in Appendix A) shows that the thermal regime, when temperature increases with a voltage at a rate of about 1.8 K/mV, is realized in the investigated PCs at least at high biases V above the superconducting (SC) gap Δ. In this case, specific resistivity ρ(T) in PC core is responsible for a peculiar dV/dI(V) behavior, while a pronounced asymmetry of dV/dI(V) is caused by large value of thermopower in this material. A reproducible zero-bias minima detected on dV/dI(V) at low biases in the range \pm(6--9)mV well below the SC critical temperature T_c could be connected with the manifestation of the SC gap Δ. Evaluation of these Andreev-reflection-like structures on dV/dI(V) points out to the preferred value of 2Δ/kT_c \approx 6. The expected second gap features on dV/dI(V) are hard to resolve unambiguously, likely due to impurity scattering, spatial inhomogeneity and transition to the mentioned thermal regime as the bias further increases. Suggestions are made how to separate spectroscopic features in dV/dI(V) from those caused by the thermal regime.

Incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations in single-crystalline LiFeAs studied by inelastic neutron scattering

We present an inelastic neutron scattering study on single-crystalline LiFeAs devoted to the characterization of the incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations at $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5\pmδ, 0.5\mpδ, q_l)$. Time-of-flight measurements show the presence of these magnetic fluctuations up to an energy transfer of 60 meV, while polarized neutrons in combination with longitudinal polarization analysis on a triple-axis spectrometer prove the pure magnetic origin of this signal. The normalization of the magnetic scattering to an absolute scale yields that magnetic fluctuations in LiFeAs are by a factor eight weaker than the resonance signal in nearly optimally Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, although a factor two is recovered due to the split peaks owing to the incommensurability. The longitudinal polarization analysis indicates weak spin space anisotropy with slightly stronger out-of-plane component between 6 and 12 meV. Furthermore, our data suggest a fine structure of the magnetic signal most likely arising from superposing nesting vectors.

Josephson effect and Andreev reflection in Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2 (x=0.25 and 0.35) point contacts

I(V) characteristics and their first derivatives of ScS and ScN-type (S-superconductor, c-constriction, N-normal metal) point-contacts (PCs) based on Ba{1-x}NaxFe2As2 ($x$=0.25 and 0.35) were studied. ScS-type PCs with S=Nb,Ta and Pb show Josephson-like resistively shunted I(V) curves with microwave induced Shapiro steps which satisfy relation 2eV=hw. The I_cR_N product (I_c-critical current, R_N-- normal state PC resistance) in these PCs is found to be up to 1.2mV. All this data with the observed dependence of the I_c on the microwave power of ScS PCs with Pb counterelectrode indicates the presence of the singlet s-wave type pairing in Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2. From the dV/dI(V) curves of ScN-type PCs demonstrating Andreev-reflection like features, the superconducting gap ratio 2Δ/k_BT_c = 3.6 \pm 1 for the compound with x=0.35 was evaluated. Analysis of these dV/dI(V) at high biases V, that is well above Δ, testifies transition to the thermal regime in PCs with a voltage increase.

Magnetic order and spin dynamics in La2O2Fe2OSe2 probed by 57Fe-Moessbauer, 139La-NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy

We present a detailed local probe study of the magnetic order in the oxychalcogenide La2O2Fe2OSe2 utilizing 57Fe Moessbauer, 139La NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. This system can be regarded as an insulating reference system of the Fe arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. From the combination of the local probe techniques we identify a non-collinear magnetic structure similar to Sr2F2Fe2OS2. The analysis of the magnetic order parameter yields an ordering temperature TN = 90.1 K and a critical exponent of beta = 0.133, which is close to the 2D Ising universality class as reported in the related oxychalcogenide family.

Phonon Anomalies, Orbital-Ordering and Electronic Raman Scattering in iron-pnictide Ca(Fe0.97Co0.03)2As2: Temperature-dependent Raman Study

We report inelastic light scattering studies on Ca(Fe0.97Co0.03)2As2 in a wide spectral range of 120-5200 cm-1 from 5K to 300K, covering the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition as well as magnetic transition at Tsm ~ 160K. The mode frequencies of two first-order Raman modes B1g and Eg, both involving displacement of Fe atoms, show sharp increase below Tsm. Concomitantly, the linewidths of all the first-order Raman modes show anomalous broadening below Tsm, attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling. The high frequency modes observed between 400-1200 cm-1 are attributed to the electronic Raman scattering involving the crystal field levels of d-orbitals of Fe2+. The splitting between xz and yz d-orbital levels is shown to be ~ 25 meV which increases as temperature decreases below Tsm. A broad Raman band observed at ~ 3200 cm-1 is assigned to two-magnon excitation of the itinerant Fe 3d antiferromagnet.

Signatures of superconducting and pseudogap phases in ultrafast transient reflectivity of Ca(Fe0.927Co0.073)2As2

We present femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic studies of a pseudogap (PG) along with the superconducting (SC) gap in an overdoped iron pnictide Ca(Fe0.927Co0.073)2As2. It is seen that the temperature evolution of the photoexcited quasiparticle (QP) relaxation dynamics, coherently excited A1g-symmetric optical phonon and two acoustic phonon dynamics behave anomalously in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature Tc. A continuous change in the sign of the experimentally measured transient differential reflectivity Delta_R/R signal at the zero time-delay between the pump and probe pulses at a temperature of ~200 K is inferred as an evidence of the emergence of the PG phase around that temperature. This behavior is independent of the pump photon energy and occurs for crystals without the spin density wave phase transition.

Single 20meV boson mode in KFe2As2 detected by point-contact spectroscopy

We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the electron-boson interaction in KFe2As2 by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy, model, and ab-initio LDA-based calculations for the standard electron-phonon Eliashberg function. The PC spectrum viz. the second derivative of the I - V characteristic of representative PC exhibits a pronounced maximum at about 20meV and surprisingly a featureless behavior at lower and higher energies. We discuss phonon and non-phonon (excitonic) mechanisms for the origin of this peak. Analysis of the underlying source of this peak may be important for the understanding of serious puzzles of superconductivity in this type of compounds.

Specific heat of K071Na0.29Fe2As2 at very low temperatures

A commercially available calorimeter has been used to investigate the specific heat of a high-quality \kn\ single crystal. The addenda heat capacity of the calorimeter is determined in the temperature range $0.02 \, \mathrm{K} \leq T \leq 0.54 \, \mathrm{K}$. The data of the \kn\ crystal imply the presence of a large $T^2$ contribution to the specific heat which gives evidence of $d$-wave order parameter symmetry in the superconducting state. To improve the measurements, a novel design for a calorimeter with a paramagnetic temperature sensor is presented. It promises a temperature resolution of $ΔT \approx 0.1 \, \mathrm{μK}$ and an addenda heat capacity less than $200 \, \mathrm{pJ/K}$ at $ T < 100 \, \mathrm{mK}$.

Spin reorientation in Na-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ studied by neutron diffraction

We have studied the magnetic ordering in Na doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ by unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction using single crystals. Unlike previously studied FeAs-based compounds that magnetically order, Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ exhibits two successive magnetic transitions: For x=0.35 upon cooling magnetic order occurs at $\sim$70\ K with in-plane magnetic moments being arranged as in pure or Ni, Co and K-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ samples. At a temperature of $\sim$46\ K a second phase transition occurs, which the single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments can unambiguously identify as a spin reorientation. At low temperatures, the ordered magnetic moments in Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ point along the $c$ direction. Magnetic correlations in these materials cannot be considered as Ising like, and spin-orbit coupling must be included in a quantitative theory.

Superconducting properties of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure

The effect of hydrostatic pressure and partial Na substitution on the normal-state properties and the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were investigated. It was found that a partial Na substitution leads to a deviation from the standard $T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity. It was demonstrated that non-Fermi liquid like behavior of the resistivity for K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and some KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples can be explained by disorder effect in the multiband system with rather different quasiparticle effective masses. Concerning the superconducting state our data support the presence of a shallow minimum around 2 GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ for stoichiometric KFe$_2$As$_2$. The analysis of $T_c$ in the K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ at pressures below 1.5 GPa showed, that the reduction of $T_c$ with Na substitution follows the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law with the critical temperature $T_{c0}$ of the clean system (without pair-breaking) which linearly depends on the pressure. Our observations, also, suggest that $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is nearly independent of the lattice compression produced by the Na substitution. Further, we theoretically analyzed the behavior of the band structure under pressure within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). A qualitative agreement between the calculated and the recently in de Haas-van Alphen experiments [T. Terashima et al., Phys.Rev.B89, 134520(2014)] measured pressure dependencies of the Fermi-surface cross-sections has been found. These calculations, also, indicate that the observed minimum around 2~GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ may occur without a change of the pairing symmetry.

Superconducting specific heat jump $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β\ (β\approx 2)$ for K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We present a systematic study of the electronic specific heat jump ($ΔC_{\rm el}$) at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Both $T_c$ and $ΔC_{\rm el}$ monotonously decrease with increasing $x$. The specific heat jump scales approximately with a power-law, $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β$, with $β\approx 2$ determined by the impurity scattering rate, in contrast to most iron-pnictide superconductors, where the remarkable Bud'ko-Ni-Canfield (BNC) scaling $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T^3$ has been found. Both the $T$ dependence of $C_{\rm el}(T)$ in the superconducting state and the nearly quadratic scaling of $ΔC_{\rm el}$ at $T_c$ are well described by the Eliashberg-theory for a two-band $d$-wave superconductor with weak pair-breaking due to nonmagnetic impurities. The disorder induced by the Na substitution significantly suppresses the small gaps leading to gapless states in the slightly disordered superconductor, which results in a large observed residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state for $x > 0$.

Charge doping versus disorder in CeFeAsO: do the in- and out-of-plane dilutions play the same role?

We provide direct experimental evidence for the identical effect of the in-plane Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ and of the out-of-plane O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ chemical dilutions on the itinerant spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic phase in CeFeAsO. Remarkably, the suppression of SDW is not sensitive at all to the different kinds of disorder introduced in the two cases. Still, it is clearly shown that the sizeable in-plane disorder induced by the Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ substitution is highly effective in suppressing $T_{\textrm{c}}$. Differently from what is observed in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$, the ordered magnetic phase of the Ce sublattice is preserved throughout the whole phase diagram in CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO ($x \leq 0.2$). An intriguing effect is encountered, whereby the magnetic coupling among Ce$^{3+}$ ions is enhanced by the superconducting phase.

De Haas-van Alphen effect and Fermi surface properties of single crystal CrB2

We report the angular dependence of three distinct de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) frequencies of the torque magnetization in the itinerant antiferromagnet CrB2 at temperatures down to 0.3K and magnetic fields up to 14T. Comparison with the calculated Fermi surface of nonmagnetic CrB2 suggests that two of the observed dHvA oscillations arise from electron-like Fermi surface sheets formed by bands with strong B-px,y character which should be rather insensitive to exchange splitting. The measured effective masses of these Fermi surface sheets display strong enhancements of up to a factor of two over the calculated band masses which we attribute to electron-phonon coupling and electronic correlations. For the temperature and field range studied, we do not observe signatures reminiscent of the heavy d-electron bands expected for antiferromagnetic CrB2. In view that the B-p bands are at the heart of conventional high-temperature superconductivity in the isostructural MgB2, we consider possible implications of our findings for nonmagnetic CrB2 and an interplay of itinerant antiferromagnetism with superconductivity.

Evidence of d-wave Superconductivity in K_(1-x)Na_xFe_2As_2 (x = 0, 0.1) Single Crystals from Low-Temperature Specific Heat Measurements

From the measurement and analysis of the specific heat of high-quality K_(1-x)Na_xFe_2As_2 single crystals we establish the presence of large T^2 contributions with coefficients alpha_sc ~ 30 mJ/mol K^3 at low-T for both x=0 and 0.1. Together with the observed square root field behavior of the specific heat in the superconducting state both findings evidence d-wave superconductivity on almost all Fermi surface sheets with an average gap amplitude of Delta_0 in the range of 0.4 - 0.8 meV. The derived Delta_0 and the observed T_c agree well with the values calculated within the Eliashberg theory, adopting a spin-fluctuation mediated pairing in the intermediate coupling regime.

Gap-dependent quasiparticle dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in parent iron pnictide CaFe2As2 across the spin density wave phase transition

We report ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in undoped CaFe_2As_2 iron pnictide single crystals exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) and concurrent structural phase transition at temperature TSDW ~ 165 K using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The contributions in transient differential reflectivity arising from exponentially decaying QP relaxation and oscillatory coherent acoustic phonon mode show large variations in the vicinity of T_SDW. From the temperature-dependence of the QP recombination dynamics in the SDW phase, we evaluate a BCS-like temperature dependent charge gap with its zero-temperature value of ~(1.6+/-0.2)k_BT_SDW, whereas, much above T_SDW, an electron-phonon coupling constant of ~0.13 has been estimated from the linear temperature-dependence of the QP relaxation time. The long-wavelength coherent acoustic phonons with typical time-period of ~100 ps have been analyzed in the light of propagating strain pulse model providing important results for the optical constants, sounds velocity and the elastic modulus of the crystal in the whole temperature range of 3 K to 300 K.

Local magnetism and structural properties of Heusler Ni$_2$MnGa alloys

We present a detailed experimental study of bulk and powder samples of the Heusler shape memory alloy Ni$_2$MnGa, including zero-field static and dynamic $^{55}$Mn NMR experiments, X-ray powder diffraction and magnetization experiments. The NMR spectra give direct access to the sequence of structural phase transitions in this compound, from the high-T austenitic phase down to the low-T martensitic phase. In addition, a detailed investigation of the so-called rf-enhancement factor provides local information for the magnetic stiffness and restoring fields for each separate coordination, structural, crystallographic environment, thus differentiating signals coming from austenitic and martensitic components. The temperature evolution of the NMR spectra and the rf-enhancement factors shows strong dependence on sample preparation. In particular, we find that sample powderization gives rise to a significant portion of martensitic traces inside the high-T austenitic region, and that these traces can be subsequently removed by annealing.

Progressive slowing down of spin fluctuations in underdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$

The evolution of low-energy spin dynamics in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ was studied over a broad doping, temperature, and magnetic field range (x = 0 - 0.15, T up to 480K, H up to 30T) by means of As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). An enhanced spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/T1T, in underdoped superconducting samples (x = 0.045, 0.05 and 0.075) suggests the presence of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, which are strongly reduced in optimally-doped (x = 0.10) and completely absent in overdoped (x = 0.15) samples. In contrast to previous analysis, Curie-Weiss fits are shown to be insufficient to describe the data over the whole temperature range. Instead, a BPP-type model is used to describe the occurrence of a peak in 1/T1T clearly above the superconducting transition, reflecting a progressive slowing down of the spin fluctuations down to the superconducting phase transition.

Specific heat of Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals: unconventional s$_\pm$ multi-band superconductivity with intermediate repulsive interband coupling and sizable attractive intraband couplings

We report a low-temperature specific heat study of high-quality single crystals of the heavily hole doped superconductor Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c \approx 34$\,K, which is evident from the magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. The zero field data manifests a significant electronic specific heat in the normal state with a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ\approx 53$ mJ/mol K$^{2}$. Using a multi-band Eliashberg analysis, we demonstrate that the dependence of the zero field specific heat in the superconducting state is well described by a three-band model with an unconventional s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry and gap magnitudes $Δ_i$ of approximately 2.35, 7.48, and -7.50 meV. Our analysis indicates a non-negligible attractive intraband coupling, which contributes significantly to the relatively high value of $T_c$. The Fermi surface averaged repulsive and attractive coupling strengths are of comparable size and outside the strong coupling limit frequently adopted for describing high-$T_c$ iron pnictide superconductors. We further infer a total mass renormalization of the order of five, including the effects of correlations and electron-boson interactions.

Ultrafast quasiparticle dynamics in superconducting iron pnictide CaFe1.89Co0.11As2

Nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation dynamics is reported in superconducting CaFe1.89Co0.11As2 single crystal using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The carrier dynamics reflects a three-channel decay of laser deposited energy with characteristic time scales varying from few hundreds of femtoseconds to order of few nanoseconds where the amplitudes and time-constants of the individual electronic relaxation components show significant changes in the vicinity of the spin density wave (T_SDW ~ 85 K) and superconducting (T_SC ~ 20 K) phase transition temperatures. The quasiparticles dynamics in the superconducting state reveals a charge gap with reduced gap value of 2$Δ$_0/k_BT_SC ~ 1.8. We have determined the electron-phonon coupling constant $\lemda$ to be ~ 0.14 from the temperature dependent relaxation time in the normal state, a value close to those reported for other types of pnictides. From the peculiar temperature-dependence of the carrier dynamics in the intermediate temperature region between the superconducting and spin density wave phase transitions, we infer a temperature scale where the charge gap associated with the spin ordered phase is maximum and closes on either side while approaching the two phase transition temperatures.

A weak-coupling superconductivity in the electron doped NaFe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$As is revealed by ARPES

We report a systematic study on the electronic structure and superconducting (SC) gaps in electron doped NaFe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$As superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Hole-like Fermi sheets are at the zone center and electron-like Fermi sheets are at the zone corner, and are mainly contributed by $xz$ and $yz$ orbital characters. Our results reveal a $\fracΔ{K_B T_c}$ in the range of 1.8-2.1, suggesting a weak-coupling superconductivity in these compounds. Gap closing above the transition temperature ($T_c$) shows the absence of pseudogaps. Gap evolution with temperature follow the BCS gap equation near the $Γ$, $Z$, and $M$ high symmetry points. Furthermore, an almost isotropic superconductivity along $k_z$ direction in the momentum space is observed by varying the excitation energies.

Acoustic and optical phonon dynamics from femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy of superconducting iron pnictide Ca(Fe_0.944Co_0.056)_2As_2

We report temperature evolution of coherently excited acoustic and optical phonon dynamics in superconducting iron pnictide single crystal Ca(Fe_0.944Co_0.056)_2As_2 across the spin density wave transition at T_SDW ~ 85 K and superconducting transition at T_SC ~20 K. Strain pulse propagation model applied to the generation of the acoustic phonons yields the temperature dependence of the optical constants, and longitudinal and transverse sound velocities in the temperature range of 3.1 K to 300 K. The frequency and dephasing times of the phonons show anomalous temperature dependence below T_SC indicating a coupling of these low energy excitations with the Cooper-pair quasiparticles. A maximum in the amplitude of the acoustic modes at T ~ 170 is seen, attributed to spin fluctuations and strong spin-lattice coupling before T_SDW.

Disordered magnetism in superconducting KFe2As2 single crystals

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_fΔ(\ln ν)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-zν^{'}} with the critical exponent zν^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-λ_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

Electronic band structure and momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in (Ca, Na)Fe2As2 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Electronic structure of newly synthesized single crystals of calcium iron arsenide doped with sodium with Tc ranging from 33 to 14 K has been determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The measured band dispersion is in general agreement with theoretical calculations, nonetheless implies absence of Fermi surface nesting at antiferromagnetic vector. A clearly developing below Tc strongly band-dependant superconducting gap has been revealed for samples with various doping levels. BCS ratio for optimal doping, $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}=5.5$, is substantially smaller than the numbers reported for related compounds, implying a non-trivial relation between electronic dispersion and superconducting gap in iron arsenides.

Flux jumps and vortex pinning in Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

In this work we present the results of the bulk magnetization measurements in a superconducting state of single crystals of Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The isothermal magnetic field ($H||c$ axis) dependent magnetization ($M$) loops exhibit a second peak (SP) or `fishtail effect', as well as remarkable flux jumps at low temperatures. The critical current density $J_c$ obtained from the $M(H)$ loops is rather high, of the order of 10$^6$ A/cm$^2$. The analysis of the temperature and field dependent $J_c$ implies that high $J_c$ is mainly due to collective (weak) pinning of vortices by dense microscopic point defects with some contribution from a strong pinning mechanism. Pronounced magnetic instabilities in terms of flux jumps depend strongly on temperature as well on the field sweep rate. The field for first flux jump as calculated from an adiabatic model, however, is much lower than the experimentally observed values, and this enhanced stability is attributed to a flux creep phenomenon. The analysis of field dependent magnetic relaxation data additionally supports a collective pinning model. The data further suggests that SP in M(H) is likely related to crossover in creep dynamics from elastic to plastic mechanism. We have constructed the vortex phase diagram on field-temperature plane.

Hole-doping in BaFe$_2$As$_2$: The case of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

Single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with $x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.35, 0.4 were grown using a self-flux high temperature solution growth technique. The superconducting and normal state properties were studied by temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat revealing that the magnetic and structural transition is rapidly suppressed upon Na-substitution at the Ba-site in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, giving rise to superconductivity. A superconducting transition as high as 34 K is reached for a Na-content of $x$=0.4. The positive Hall coefficient confirms that the substitution of Ba by Na results in hole-doping similarly to the substitution of Ba by K. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy was performed on all Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. The Fermi surface of hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is to high extent the same as the Fermi surface found for the K-doped sister compounds, suggesting a similar impact of the substitution of Ba by either K or Na on the electronic band dispersion at the Fermi level

Incommensurate magnetic fluctuations and Fermi surface topology in LiFeAs

Using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data accumulated over the whole Brillouin zone (BZ) in LiFeAs we analyze the itinerant component of the dynamic spin susceptibility in this system in the normal and superconducting state. We identify the origin of the incommensurate magnetic inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensity as scattering between the electron pockets, centered around the $(π,π)$ point of the BZ and the large two-dimensional hole pocket, centered around the $Γ$-point of the BZ. As the magnitude of the superconducting gap within the large hole pocket is relatively small and angle dependent, we interpret the INS data in the superconducting state as a renormalization of the particle-hole continuum rather than a true spin exciton. Our comparison indicates that the INS data can be reasonably well described by both the sign changing symmetry of the superconducting gap between electron and hole pockets as well as sign preserving gap, depending on the assumptions made for the fermionic damping.

Investigation of LiFeAs by means of "Break-junction" Technique

In our tunneling investigation using Andreev superconductor - normal metal - superconductor contacts on LiFeAs single crystals we observed two reproducible independent subharmonic gap structures at dynamic conductance characteristics. From these results, we can derive the energy of the large superconducting gap $Δ_L=(2.5 ÷3.4)$ meV and the small gap $Δ_L=(0.9 ÷1)$ meV at $T = 4.2$ K for the $T_C^{local} \approx (10.5 ÷14)$ K (the contact area critical temperature which deviation causes the variation of $Δ_L$). The BCS-ratio is found to be $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = (4.6 ÷5.6)$, whereas $2Δ_S/k_BT_C \ll 3.52$ results from induced superconductivity in the bands with the small gap.

KFe2As2: coexistence of superconductivity and local moment derived spin-glass

High-quality KFe2As2 single crystals have been studied by transport, magnetization and low-T specific heat measurements. Their analysis shows that superconductivity occurs (in some cases coexists) in the vicinity of disordered magnetic phases (Griffiths and spin-glass type) depending of the amount of local magnetic moments (probably excess Fe derived)and sample inhomogeneity. The achieved phenomenological description of our data including also data from the literature provides a consistent explanation of the observed non-Fermi-liquid behavior and of the nominally large experimental Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n about 94 mJ/mol K^2. We suggest that the intrinsic value (directly related to the itinerant quasi-particles) gamma_el about 60(10)mJ/mol K^2 is significantly reduced compared with gamma_n. Then an enhanced relative jump of the electronic specific heat Delta C_el/gamma_el T_c about 0.8 and a weak total electron-boson coupling constant lambda less or about 1 follow.

Local magnetic anisotropy in BaFe$_2$As$_2$: a polarized inelastic neutron scattering study

The anisotropy of the magnetic excitations in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ was studied by polarized inelastic neutron scattering which allows one to separate the components of the magnetic response. Despite the in-plane orientation of the static ordered moment we find the in-plane polarized magnons to exhibit a larger gap than the out-of-plane polarized ones indicating very strong single-ion anisotropy within the layers. It costs more energy to rotate a spin within the orthorhombic {\it a-b} plane than rotating it perpendicular to the FeAs layers.

Microwave absorption study of pinning regimes in $\bf Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ single crystals

Magnetic field dependent modulated microwave absorption (MMWA) measurements have been carried out to investigate vortex pinning effects in single crystals of the iron-based high-Tc superconductor Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 with three different cobalt doping levels of x = 0.07, 0.09, and 0.11. The dependence of the MMWA hysteresis loops on temperature, magnetic field, and Co-concentration have been measured and analyzed using a theoretical model of microwave absorption in superconductors. The analysis reveals that in an underdoped crystal (x = 0.07) the so called \dtc-pinning due to magnetically ordered regions defines the temperature dependence of the critical current density, while in the optimally doped (x = 0.09) and overdoped (x = 0.11) samples the pinning is governed by structural imperfections due to inhomogeneous distribution of cobalt dopant and has the so called δ-l character.

Observation of charge accumulation and onsite Coulomb repulsion at transition metal impurities in the iron pnictides

We report a combined valence band photoemission and Auger spectroscopy study of single crystalline Ca(Fe,Co)2As2 and Ba(Fe,TM)2As2 with TM=Ni or Cu. The valence band photoemission data show directly that the TM-states move to higher binding energies with increasing atomic number, contributing less and less to the states close to the Fermi level. Furthermore, the 3d8 final state of the LVV Auger decay, which is observed for Ni and Cu, unambiguously reveals the accumulation of charge at these impurities. We also show that the onsite Coulomb interaction on the impurity strongly increases when moving from Co over Ni to Cu. Our results quantify the impurity potentials and imply that the superconducting state is robust against impurity scattering.

On the half-metallicity of Co2FeSi Heusler alloy: an experimental and ab initio study

Co2FeSi, a Heusler alloy with the highest magnetic moment per unit cell and the highest Curie temperature, has largely been described theoretically as a half-metal. This conclusion, however, disagrees with Point Contact Andreev Reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy measurements, which give much lower values of spin polarization, P. Here, we present the spin polarization measurements of Co2FeSi by the PCAR technique, along with a thorough computational exploration, within the DFT and a GGA+U approach, of the Coulomb exchange U-parameters for Co and Fe atoms, taking into account spin-orbit coupling. We find that the orbital contribution (mo) to the total magnetic moment (mT) is significant, since it is at least 3 times greater than the experimental uncertainty of mT. Account of mo radically affects the acceptable values of U. Specifically, we find no values of U that would simultaneously satisfy the experimental values of the magnetic moment and result in the half-metallicity of Co2FeSi. On the other hand, the ranges of U that we report as acceptable are compatible with spin polarization measurements (ours and the ones found in the literature), which all are within approximately 40-60% range. Thus, based on reconciling experimental and computational results, we conclude that: a) spin-orbit coupling cannot be neglected in calculating Co2FeSi magnetic properties, and b) Co2FeSi Heusler alloy is not half-metallic. We believe that our approach can be applied to other Heusler alloys such as Co2FeAl.

Pr magnetism and its interplay with the Fe spin density wave in PrFeAsO

We have studied the magnetism of the Pr3+ ions in PrFeAsO_1-xF_x (x = 0; 0.15) and its interaction with the Fe magnetic order (for x = 0). Specific heat data confirm the presence of a first excited crystal electric field (CEF) level around 3.5 meV in the undoped compound PrFeAsO. This finding is in agreement with recent neutron scattering experiments. The doped compound is found to have a much lower first CEF splitting of about 2.0 meV. The Pr ordering in PrFeAsO gives rise to large anomalies in the specific heat and the thermal expansion coefficient. In addition, a field-induced transition is found at low temperatures that is most pronounced for the magnetostriction coefficient. This transition, which is absent in the doped compound, is attributed to a reversal of the Fe spin canting as the antiferromagnetic Pr order is destroyed by the external magnetic field.

Probing the role of Co substitution in the electronic structure of iron-pnictides

The role of Co substitution in the low-energy electronic structure of Ca(Fe$_{0.944}$Co$_{0.056}$)$_2$As$_2$ is investigated by resonant photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory. The Co 3d-state center-of-mass is observed at 250 meV higher binding energy than Fe's, indicating that Co posses one extra valence electron, and that Fe and Co are in the same 2+ oxidation state. Yet, significant Co character is detected for the Bloch wavefunctions at the chemical potential, revealing that the Co 3d electrons are part of the Fermi sea determining the Fermi surface. This establishes the complex role of Co substitution in CaFe2As2, and the inadequacy of a rigid-band shift description.

Probing the Unconventional Superconducting State of LiFeAs by Quasiparticle Interference

A crucial step in revealing the nature of unconventional superconductivity is to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has proven a powerful technique to probe this symmetry by measuring the quasiparticle interference (QPI) which sensitively depends on the superconducting pairing mechanism. A particularly well suited material to apply this technique is the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs as it features clean, charge neutral cleaved surfaces without surface states and a relatively high Tc~18K. Our data reveal that in LiFeAs the quasiparticle scattering is governed by a van-Hove singularity at the center of the Brillouin zone which is in stark contrast with other pnictide superconductors where nesting is crucial for both scattering and s+- superconductivity. Indeed, within a minimal model and using the most elementary order parameters, calculations of the QPI suggest a dominating role of the hole-like bands for the quasiparticle scattering. Our theoretical findings do not support the elementary singlet pairing symmetries s++, s+-, and d-wave. This brings to mind that the superconducting pairing mechanism in LiFeAs is based on an unusual pairing symmetry such as an elementary p-wave (which provides optimal agreement between the experimental data and QPI simulations) or a more complex order parameter (e.g. s+id-wave symmetry).

Specific heat and upper critical field in KFe2As2 single crystals

We report low-temperature specific heat measurements for high-quality single crystalline KFe2As2 (T_c about 3.5 K). The investigated zero-field specific heat data yields an unusually large nominal Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n of 94(3) mJ/mol K^2 which is however significantly affected by extrinsic contributions as evidenced by a sizable residual linear specific heat and various theoretical considerations including also an analysis of Kadowaki-Woods relations. Then KFe2As2 should be classified as a weak to intermediately strong coupling superconductor with a total electron-boson coupling constant lambda_tot near 1 (including a calculated weak electron-phonon coupling constant of lambda_el-ph =0.17. From specific heat and ac susceptibility studies in external magnetic fields the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. We confirm the high anisotropy of the upper critical fields B_c2(T) ranging from a factor of 5 near T_c to a slightly reduced value approaching T=0 for fields B || ab$ and || c and show that their ratio Gamma slightly exceeds the mass anisotropy of 4.35 derived from our full-relativistic LDA-band structure calculations. Its slight reduction when approaching T=0 is not a consequence of Pauli-limiting as in less perfect samples but point likely to a multiband effect. We also report irreversibility field data obtained from ac susceptibility measurements. The double-maximum in the T-dependence of its imaginary part for fields B || c indicates a peak-effect in the T-dependence of critical currents.

Strong pairing at iron $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals in hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$

Among numerous hypotheses, recently proposed to explain superconductivity in iron-based superconductors [1-9], many consider Fermi surface (FS) nesting [2, 4, 8, 10] and dimensionality [4, 9] as important contributors. Precise determination of the electronic spectrum and its modification by superconductivity, crucial for further theoretical advance, were hindered by a rich structure of the FS [11-17]. Here, using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with resolution of all three components of electron momentum and electronic states symmetry, we disentangle the electronic structure of hole-doped BaFe2As2, and show that nesting and dimensionality of FS sheets have no immediate relation to the superconducting pairing. Alternatively a clear correlation between the orbital character of the electronic states and their propensity to superconductivity is observed: the magnitude of the superconducting gap maximizes at 10.5 meV exclusively for iron 3dxz;yz orbitals, while for others drops to 3.5 meV. Presented results reveal similarities of electronic response to superconducting and magneto-structural transitions [18, 19], implying that relation between these two phases is more intimate than just competition for FS, and demonstrate importance of orbital physics in iron superconductors.

The magnetic field -- temperature phase diagram of the mixed superconducting state is drawn for the three materials, displaying a sizeable reduction of the liquid phase upon increasing $T_{c}$ in the range of applied fields ($H \leq 5$ T). This result indicates that SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ is the most interesting compound among the investigated ones in view of possible applications. The field-dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy $U_{0}$ exhibits a common trend for all the samples with a typical crossover field value (2500 Oe $\lesssim H_{cr} \lesssim 5000$ Oe) separating regions where single and collective depinning processes are at work. Analysis of the data in terms of a simple two-fluid picture for slightly anisotropic materials allows to estimate the zero-temperature penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)$ and the anisotropy parameter $γ$ for the three materials. Finally, a sizeable suppression of the superfluid density is deduced in a $s^{\pm}$ two-gap scenario.

Calorimetric study of the superconducting and normal state properties of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We present a calorimetric study on single crystals of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0, 0.032, 0.051, 0.056, 0.063, and 0.146). The combined first order spin-density wave/structural transition occurs in the parent CaFe2As2 compound at 168 K and gradually shifts to lower temperature for low doping levels (x = 0.032 and x = 0.051). It is completely suppressed upon higher doping x = 0.056. Simultaneously, superconductivity appears at lower temperature with a transition temperature around Tc = 14.1 K for Ca(Fe0.937Co0.063)2As2. The phase diagram of Ca(Fe0.937Co0.063)2As2 has been derived and the upper critical field is found to be H(c) c2 = 11.5

High-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy study of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs superconductors

We report a detailed investigation of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs (x = 0, 0.07 and 0.14) samples by means of high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) together with measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties. The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F doping. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large doping scale may be indicative of the ground states' coexistence.

Incommensurate magnetic excitations in superconducting LiFeAs

Magnetic correlations in superconducting LiFeAs were studied by elastic and by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. There is no indication for static magnetic ordering but inelastic correlations appear at the incommensurate wave vector (0:5+-d 0:-+d 0) with d=0.07 slightly shifted from the commensurate ordering observed in other FeAs-based compounds. The incommensurate magnetic excitations respond to the opening of the superconducting gap by a transfer of spectral weight.

Multi-gap superconductivity in single crystals of Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$: A calorimetric investigation

We investigate the electronic properties and the superconducting gap characteristics of a single crystal of hole-doped 122 Fe-pnictide Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ by means of specific heat measurements. The specific heat exhibits a pronounced anomaly around the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ = 29.4 K, and a small residual part at low temperature. In a magnetic field of 90 kOe, the transition is broadened and $T_c$ is lowered insignificantly by an amount $\sim$ 1.5 K. We estimate a high electronic coefficient in the normal state with a value 57.5 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^2$, being consistent with hole-doped 122 compounds. The temperature-dependent superconducting electronic specific heat cannot be described with single-gap BCS theory under weak coupling approach. Instead, our analysis implies a presence of two s-wave like gaps with magnitudes $Δ_1(0)/k_BT_c$ = 1.06 and $Δ_2(0)/k_BT_c$ = 2.08 with their respective weights of 48% and 52%. While our results have qualitative similarities with other hole-doped 122 materials, the gap's magnitude and their ratio are quite different.

Pseudogap-like phase in Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ revealed by $^{75}$As NQR

We report $^{75}$As NQR measurements on single crystalline Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0\leq x \leq 0.09$). The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as a function of temperature $T$ and Co dopant concentration $x$ reveals a normal-state pseudogap-like phase below a crossover temperature $T^*$ in the under- and optimally-doped region. The resulting $x$-$T$ phase diagram shows that, after suppression of the spin-density-wave order, $T^*$ intersects $T_c$ falling to zero rapidly near the optimal doping regime. Possible origins of the pseudogap behavior are discussed.

Raman Evidence for Superconducting Gap and Spin-Phonon Coupling in Superconductor Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2

Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystal of electron-doped Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2 superconductor, covering the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition as well as magnetic transition at TSM ~ 140 K and superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 23 K, reveal evidence for superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization; in particular the phonon mode near 260 cm-1 shows hardening below Tc, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. All the three Raman active phonon modes show anomalous temperature dependence between room temperature and Tc i.e phonon frequency decreases with lowering temperature. Further, frequency of one of the modes shows a sudden change in temperature dependence at TSM. Using first-principles density functional theory-based calculations, we show that the low temperature phase (Tc < T < TSM) exhibits short-ranged stripe anti-ferromagnetic ordering, and estimate the spin-phonon couplings that are responsible for these phonon anomalies.

Resistivity and Hall effect of LiFeAs: Evidence for electron-electron scattering

LiFeAs is unique among the broad family of FeAs-based superconductors, because it is superconducting with a rather large $T_c\simeq 18$ K under ambient conditions although it is a stoichiometric compound. We studied the electrical transport on a high-quality single crystal. The resistivity shows quadratic temperature dependence at low temperature giving evidence for strong electron-electron scattering and a tendency towards saturation around room temperature. The Hall constant is negative and changes with temperature, what most probably arises from a van Hove singularity close to the Fermi energy in one of the hole-like bands. Using band structure calculations based on angular resolved photoemission spectra we are able to reproduce all the basic features of both the resistivity as well as the Hall effect data.

Critical current and vortex dynamics in single crystals of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$

We investigate the critical current density and vortex dynamics in single crystals of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.051, 0.056, 0.065, and 0.073). The samples exhibit different critical temperatures and superconducting phase fractions. We show that in contrast to their Ba-based counterpart, the crystals do not exhibit a second peak in the field dependence of magnetization. The calculated composition-dependent critical current density ($j_{\rm c}$) increases initially with Co doping, maximizing at $x$ = 0.065, and then decreases. This variation in $j_{\rm c}$ follows the superconducting phase fractions in this series. The calculated $j_{\rm c}$ shows strong temperature dependence, decreasing rapidly upon heating. Magnetic relaxation measurements imply a nonlogarithmic dependence on time. We find that the relaxation rate is large, reflecting weak characteristic pinning energy. The analysis of temperature- and field-dependent magnetic relaxation data suggests that vortex dynamics in these compounds is consistent with plastic creeping rather than the collective creep model, unlike other 122 pnictide superconductors. This difference may cause the absence of the second peak in the field dependent magnetization of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$.

Crystal and magnetic structure of the oxypnictide superconductor LaO(1-x)FxFeAs: evidence for magnetoelastic coupling

High-resolution and high-flux neutron as well as X-ray powder-diffraction experiments were performed on the oxypnictide series LaO(1-x)FxFeAs with 0<x<0.15 in order to study the crystal and magnetic structure. The magnetic symmetry of the undoped compound corresponds to those reported for ReOFeAs (with Re a rare earth) and for AFe2As2 (A=Ba, Sr) materials. We find an ordered magnetic moment of 0.63(1)muB at 2 K in LaOFeAs, which is significantly larger than the values previously reported for this compound. A sizable ordered magnetic moment is observed up to a F-doping of 4.5% whereas there is no magnetic order for a sample with a F concentration of x=0.06. In the undoped sample, several interatomic distances and FeAs4 tetrahedra angles exhibit pronounced anomalies connected with the broad structural transition and with the onset of magnetism supporting the idea of strong magneto-elastic coupling in this material.

Fishtail effect and vortex dynamics in LiFeAs single crystals

We investigate the fishtail effect, critical current density ($J_c$) and vortex dynamics in LiFeAs single crystals. The sample exhibits a second peak (SP) in the magnetization loop only with the field $||$ c-axis. We calculate a reasonably high $J_c$, however, values are lower than in 'Ba-122' and '1111'-type FeAs-compounds. Magnetic relaxation data imply a strong pinning which appears not to be due to conventional defects. Instead, its behavior is similar to that of the triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Our data suggest that the origin of the SP may be related to a vortex lattice phase transition. We have constructed the vortex phase diagram for LiFeAs on the field-temperature plane.

Phase diagram of iron-arsenide superconductors Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (0 <= x <= 0.2)

Platelet-like single crystals of the Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 series having lateral dimensions up to 15 mm and thickness up to 0.5 mm were obtained from the high temperature solution growth technique using Sn flux. Upon Co doping, the c-axis of the tetragonal unit cell decreases, while the a-axis shows a less significant variation. Pristine CaFe2As2 shows a combined spin-density-wave and structural transition near T = 166 K which gradually shifts to lower temperatures and splits with increasing Co-doping. Both transitions terminate abruptly at a critical Co-concentration of xc = 0.075. For x \geq 0.05, superconductivity appears at low temperatures with a maximum transition temperature TC of around 20 K. The superconducting volume fraction increases with Co concentration up to x = 0.09 followed by a gradual decrease with further increase of the doping level. The electronic phase diagram of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.2) series is constructed from the magnetization and electric resistivity data. We show that the low-temperature superconducting properties of Co-doped CaFe2As2 differ considerably from those of BaFe2As2 reported previously. These differences seem to be related to the extreme pressure sensitivity of CaFe2As2 relative to its Ba counterpart.

The superconducting gaps in LiFeAs: Joint study of specific heat and ARPES

We present specific heat, c_P, and ARPES data on single crystals of the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs. A pronounced anomaly is found in c_P at the superconducting transition. The electronic contribution can be described by two s-type energy gaps with magnitudes of approximately Delta1 = 1.2 meV and Delta2 = 2.6 meV and a normal-state gamma coefficient of 10 mJ/mol K^2. All these values are in remarkable agreement with ARPES results.

Weak superconducting pairing and a single isotropic energy gap in stoichiometric LiFeAs

We report superconducting (SC) properties of stoichiometric LiFeAs (Tc = 17 K) studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Although the vortex lattice exhibits no long-range order, well-defined SANS rocking curves indicate better ordering than in chemically doped 122-compounds. The London penetration depth of 210 nm, determined from the magnetic field dependence of the form factor, is compared to that calculated from the ARPES band structure with no adjustable parameters. Its temperature dependence is best described by a single isotropic SC gap of 3.0 meV, which agrees with the ARPES value of 3.1 meV and corresponds to the ratio 2Delta/kTc = 4.1, approaching the weak-coupling limit predicted by the BCS theory. This classifies LiFeAs as a weakly coupled single-gap superconductor, similar to conventional metals.
