Dilution of the magnetic lattice in the Kitaev candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ by Rh$^{3+}$ doping

Magnetic dilution of a well-established Kitaev candidate system is realized in the substitutional Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Cl$_3$ series ($x = 0.02-0.6$). Optimized syntheses protocols yield uniformly-doped single crystals and polycrystalline powders that are isostructural to the parental $α$-RuCl$_3$ as per X-ray diffraction. The Rh content $x$ is accurately determined by the quantitative energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy technique with standards. We determine the magnetic phase diagram of Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Cl$_3$ for in-plane magnetic fields from magnetization and specific-heat measurements as a function of $x$ and stacking periodicity, and identify the suppression of the magnetic order at $x \approx 0.2$ towards a disordered phase, which does not show any clear signature of freezing into a spin glass. Comparing with previous studies on the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$, we propose that chemical pressure would contribute to the suppression of magnetic order especially in Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$ and that the zigzag magnetic ground state appears to be relatively robust with respect to the dilution of the Kitaev--$Γ$--Heisenberg magnetic lattice. We also discovered a slight dependence of the magnetic properties on thermal cycling, which would be due to an incomplete structural transition.

Frustration model and spin excitations in the helimagnet FeP

The metallic compound FeP belongs to the class of materials that feature a complex noncollinear spin order driven by magnetic frustration. While its double-helix magnetic structure with a period $λ_{\text{s}} \approx 5c$, where $c$ is the lattice constant, was previously well determined, the relevant spin-spin interactions that lead to that ground state remain unknown. By performing extensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we obtained the spin-excitation spectra in a large part of the momentum-energy space. The spectra show that the magnons are gapped with a gap energy of $\sim$5 meV. Despite the 3D crystal structure, the magnon modes display strongly anisotropic dispersions, revealing a quasi-one-dimensional character of the magnetic interactions in FeP. The physics of the material, however, is not determined by the dominating exchange, which is ferromagnetic. Instead, the weaker two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions between the rigid ferromagnetic spin chains drive the magnetic frustration. Using linear spin-wave theory, we were able to construct an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian with an anisotropy term capable of reproducing the observed spectra. This enabled us to quantify the exchange interactions in FeP and determine the mechanism of its magnetic frustration.

Pressure control of the magnetic anisotropy of the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

We report the results of the pressure-dependent measurements of the static magnetization and of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ to address the properties of the ferromagnetic phase of this quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals magnet. The static magnetic data at hydrostatic pressures up to 3.4 GPa reveal a gradual suppression of ferromagnetism in terms of a reduction of the critical transition temperature, a broadening of the transition width and an increase of the field necessary to fully saturate the magnetization $M_{\rm s}$. The value of $M_{\rm s} \simeq 3μ_{\rm B}$/Cr remains constant within the error bars up to a pressure of 2.8 GPa. The anisotropy of the FMR signal continuously diminishes in the studied hydrostatic pressure range up to 2.39 GPa suggesting a reduction of the easy-axis type magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE). A quantitative analysis of the FMR data gives evidence that up to this pressure the MAE constant $K_{\rm U}$, although getting significantly smaller, still remains finite and positive, i.e. of the easy-axis type. Therefore, a recently discussed possibility of switching the sign of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ could only be expected at still higher pressures, if possible at all due to the observed weakening of the ferromagnetism under pressure. This circumstance may be of relevance for the design of strain-engineered functional heterostructures containing layers of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$.

Thermal transport of the frustrated spin-chain mineral linarite: Magnetic heat transport and strong spin-phonon scattering

The mineral linarite (PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$) forms a monoclinic structure where a sequence of Cu(OH)$_2$ units forms a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain. Competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor ($J_1$) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions ($J_2$) in this quasi-one-dimensional spin structure imply magnetic frustration and lead to magnetic ordering below $T_N =$2.8 K in a mutliferroic elliptical spin-spiral ground state. Upon the application of a magnetic field along the spin-chain direction, distinct magnetically ordered phases can be induced. We studied the thermal conductivity $κ$ in this material across the magnetic phase diagram as well as in the paramagnetic regime in the temperature ranges 0.07-1 K and 9-300 K. We found that in linarite the heat is carried mainly by phonons but shows a peculiar non-monotonic behavior in field. In particular, $κ$ is highly suppressed at the magnetic phase boundaries, indicative of strong scattering of the phonons off critical magnetic fluctuations. Even at temperatures far above the magnetically ordered phases, the phononic thermal conductivity is reduced due to scattering off magnetic fluctuations. The mean free path due to spin-phonon scattering ($l_{\text{spin-phonon}}$) was determined as function of temperature. A power law behavior was observed mainly above 0.5 K indicating the thermal activation of spin fluctuations. In the critical regime close to the saturation field, $l_{\text{spin-phonon}}$ shows a $1/T$ dependence. Furthermore, a magnon thermal transport channel was verified in the helical magnetic phase. We estimate a magnon mean free path which corresponds to about 1000 lattice spacings.

Field-induced phase transitions of the Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ probed by thermal expansion and magnetostriction

High-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements were performed on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$ in magnetic fields applied parallel to the Ru-Ru bonds. The length changes were measured in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Our data show clear thermodynamic characteristics for the field-induced phase transition at the critical field $μ_0H_{c1} = 7.8(2)$ T where the antiferromagnetic zigzag order is suppressed. At higher fields, a kink in the magnetostriction coefficient signals an additional phase transition around $μ_0H_{c2} \approx 11$ T. The extracted Grüneisen parameter shows typical hallmarks for quantum criticality near $H_{c1}$, but also displays anomalous behavior above $H_{c1}$. We compare our experimental data with linear spin-wave calculations employing a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg model in the semiclassical limit. Most of the salient features are in agreement with each other, however, the peculiar features in the high-field region above $H_{c1}$ cannot be accounted for in our modelling and hence suggest a genuine quantum nature. We construct a phase diagram for $α$-RuCl$_3$ showing two low-temperature transitions induced by an in-plane field along the Ru-Ru bonds.

Long-range magnetic order in the ${\tilde S}=1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeS$_2$

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.

Magnetic interactions in the tripod-kagome antiferromagnet Mg$_{2}$Gd$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ probed by static magnetometry and high-field ESR spectroscopy

We report an experimental study of the static magnetization $M(H,T)$ and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of polycrystalline \MgGd, a representative member of the newly discovered class of the so-called tripod-kagome antiferromagnets where the isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ spins ($S = 7/2$) form a two-dimensional kagome spin-frustrated lattice. It follows from the analysis of the low-$T$ $M(H)$-curves that the Gd$^{3+}$ spins are coupled by a small isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interaction $|J| \approx$ 0.3\,K. The $M(H,T)$-dependences measured down to 0.5\,K evidence a long-range AFM order at $T_{\text{N}} = 1.7$\,K and its rapid suppression at higher fields $\geq 4$\,T. ESR spectra measured in fields up to 15\,T are analyzed considering possible effects of demagnetizing fields, single-ion anisotropy and spin-spin correlations. While the demagnetization effects due to a large sample magnetization in high fields and its shape anisotropy become relevant at low temperatures, the broadening of the ESR line commencing already at $T\lesssim 30$\,K may indicate the onset of the spin-spin correlations far above the ordering temperature due to the geometrical spin frustration in this compound.

The incommensurate magnet iron monophosphide FeP: Crystal growth and characterization

We report an optimized chemical vapor transport method, which allows growing FeP single crystals up to 500 mg in mass and 80 $mm^{3}$ in volume. The high quality of the crystals obtained by this method was confirmed by means of EDX, high-resolution TEM, low-temperature single crystal XRD and neutron diffraction experiments. We investigated the transport and magnetic properties of the single crystals and calculated the electronic band structure of FeP. We show both theoretically and experimentally, that the ground state of FeP is metallic. The examination of the magnetic data reveals antiferromagnetic order below T$_{N}$ =119 K while transport remains metallic in both the paramagnetic and the antiferromagnetic phase. The analysis of the neutron diffraction data shows an incommensurate magnetic structure with the propagation vector Q=(0, 0, $\pmδ$), where $δ$ $\sim$ 0.2. For the full understanding of the magnetic state, further experiments are needed. The successful growth of large high-quality single crystals opens the opportunity for further investigations of itinerant magnets with incommensurate spin structures using a wide range of experimental tools.

Complex magnetic properties in the mixed 4f -5d double perovskite iridates Ln2ZnIrO6 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu & Gd)

In this work, we report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of double perovskites Ln$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ with Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu & Gd. These compounds present new examples of the rare case of double perovskites (general formula A$_2$BB'O$_6$) with a magnetic 4f -ion on the A-site in combination with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal ion Ir$^{4+}$ on the B-sublattice. We discuss the impact of different rare earths on the macroscopic magnetic properties. Gd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ and Eu$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ show weak canted antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$ = 23 K and T$_N$ = 12 K, respectively. Sm$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ orders antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ = 13 K. Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ exhibits complex magnetic properties with strong field dependence ranging from a two-step behavior at H = 0.01 T to an antiferromagnetic ground state at intermediate external fields and a spin-flop phase at H$\geq$4 T, which suggests complex interplay between Nd$^{3+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ . To further shed light on this magnetic interaction, the magnetic structure of Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$'s ground state is examined via neutron powder diffraction.

Ba2YIrO6: A cubic double perovskite material with Ir5+ ions

Materials with a 5d4 electronic configuration are generally considered to have a nonmagnetic ground state (J=0). Interestingly, Sr2YIrO6 (Ir5+ having 5d4 electronic configuration) was recently reported to exhibit long-range magnetic order at low temperature and the distorted IrO6 octahedra were discussed to cause the magnetism in this material. Hence, a comparison of structurally distorted Sr2YIrO6 with cubic Ba2YIrO6 may shed light on the source of magnetism in such Ir5+ materials with 5d4 configuration. Besides, Ir5+ materials having 5d4 are also interesting in the context of recently predicted excitonic types of magnetism. Here we report a single-crystal-based analysis of the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Ba2YIrO6. We observe that in Ba2YIrO6 for temperatures down to 0.4 K, long-range magnetic order is absent but at the same time correlated magnetic moments are present. We show that these moments are absent in fully relativistic ab initio band-structure calculations; hence, their origin is presently unclear.

Competing effects of Mn and Y doping on the low-energy excitations and phase diagram of La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ iron-based superconductors

Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) and $^{19}$F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements were performed to investigate the effect of Mn for Fe substitutions in La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors. While for $y = 0$ a very low critical concentration of Mn ($x = 0.2$%) is needed to quench superconductivity, as $y$ increases the negative chemical pressure introduced by Y for La substitution stabilizes superconductivity and for $y= 20$% it is suppressed at Mn contents an order of magnitude larger. A magnetic phase arises once superconductivity is suppressed both for $y$=0 and for $y= 20$%. Low-energy spin fluctuations give rise to a peak in $^{19}$F NMR $1/T_1$ with an onset well above the superconducting transition temperature and whose magnitude increases with $x$. Also the static magnetic correlations probed by $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show a marked increase with Mn content. The disruption of superconductivity and the onset of the magnetic ground-state are discussed in the light of the proximity of LaFeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ to a quantum critical point.

Non-collinear antiferromagnetism of coupled spins and pseudospins in the double perovskite La2CuIrO6

We report the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the double perovskite compound La2CuIrO6 from X-ray, neutron diffraction, neutron depolarization, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, muon-spin-relaxation (uSR), electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Below ~113 K, short-range spin-spin correlations occur within the Cu2+ sublattice. With decreasing temperature, the Ir4+ sublattice progressively involves in the correlation process. Below T = 74 K, the magnetic sublattices of Cu (spin s = 1/2) and Ir (pseudospin j = 1/2) in La2CuIrO6 are strongly coupled and exhibit an antiferromagnetic phase transition into a non-collinear magnetic structure accompanied by a small uncompensated transverse moment. A weak anomaly in ac-susceptibility as well as in the NMR and μSR spin lattice relaxation rates at 54 K is interpreted as a cooperative ordering of the transverse moments which is influenced by the strong spin-orbit coupled 5d ion Ir4+. We argue that the rich magnetic behaviour observed in La2CuIrO6 is related to complex magnetic interactions between the strongly correlated spin-only 3d ions with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition ions where a combination of the spin-orbit coupling and the low-symmetry of the crystal lattice plays a special role for the spin structure in the magnetically ordered state.

Spin-orbit coupling control of anisotropy, ground state and frustration in 5d2 Sr2MgOsO6

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d2 system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the remarkably high temperature of 108 K. The measurements presented allow for the first accurate quantification of the size of the magnetic moment in a 5d2 system of 0.60(2) muB - a significantly reduced moment from the expected value for such a system. Furthermore, significant anisotropy is identified via a spin excitation gap, and we confirm by first principles calculations that SOC not only provides the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, but also plays a crucial role in determining both the ground state magnetic order and the size of the local moment in this compound. Through comparison to Sr2ScOsO6, it is demonstrated that SOC-induced anisotropy has the ability to relieve frustration in 5d2 systems relative to their 5d3 counterparts, providing an explanation of the high TN found in Sr2MgOsO6.

Complex field-induced states in Linarite PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$ with a variety of high-order exotic SDW$_p$ states

Low-temperature neutron diffraction and NMR studies of field-induced phases in linarite are presented for magnetic fields $H \parallel b$ axis. A two-step spin-flop transition is observed as well as a transition transforming a helical magnetic ground state into an unusual magnetic phase with sine-wave modulated moments $\parallel H$. An effective $\tilde{J}_1$-$\tilde{J}_2$ single-chain model with a magnetization-dependent frustration ratio $α_{\rm eff} = -\tilde{J}_2/\tilde{J}_1$ is proposed. The latter is governed by skew interchain couplings and shifted to the vicinity of the ferromagnetic critical point. It explains qualitatively the observation of a rich variety of exotic (for strongly correlated cuprate spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems) longitudinal collinear spin-density wave SDW$_p$ states ($9 \geq p \geq 2$).

Enhancement of low-frequency fluctuations and superconductivity breakdown in Mn-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$FeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors

$^{19}$F NMR measurements in optimally electron-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors are presented. In these materials the effect of Mn doping on the superconducting phase is studied for two series of compounds ($y= 0$ and $y= 0.2$) where the chemical pressure is varied by substituting La with Y. In the $y=0.2$ series superconductivity is suppressed for Mn contents an order of magnitude larger than for the $y=0$ series. For both series a peak in the $^{19}$F NMR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ emerges upon Mn doping and gets significantly enhanced on approaching the quantum phase transition between the superconducting and magnetic phases. $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show that for similar Mn contents magnetic correlations are more pronounced in the $y=0$ series, at variance with what one would expect for $\vec Q=(π/a,0)$ spin correlations. These observations suggest that Mn doping tends to reduce fluctuations at $\vec Q=(π/a,0)$ and to enhance other low-frequency modes. The effect of this transfer of spectral weight on the superconducting pairing is discussed along with the charge localization induced by Mn.

Influence of hydrostatic pressure on the bulk magnetic properties of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We report on the magnetic properties of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ upon the application of hydrostatic pressure $P$ by means of macroscopic and local-probe techniques. In contrast to previously reported resistivity measurements, our dc magnetization data unambiguously demonstrate a non-monotonic $P$-dependence for $T_{N}$, i.~e., the critical transition temperature to the magnetic phase. More strikingly, we closely reproduce the recently calculated behaviour for $T_{N}$ under the assumption that $P$ lowers the $U/W$ ratio (i.~e., Coulomb repulsion energy over electronic bandwidth). Zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy measurements confirm that the local magnetic configuration is only weakly perturbed by low $P$ values, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The current results experimentally support the preservation of a $4$-in/$4$-out ground state and, simultaneously, a departure from the single-band $j_{\text{eff}} = 1/2$ model across the accessed region of the phase diagram.

Mutual independence of critical temperature and superfluid density under pressure in optimally electron-doped superconducting LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

The superconducting properties of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ in conditions of optimal electron-doping are investigated upon the application of external pressure up to $\sim 23$ kbar. Measurements of muon-spin spectroscopy and dc magnetometry evidence a clear mutual independence between the critical temperature $T_{c}$ and the low-temperature saturation value for the ratio $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superfluid density over effective band mass of Cooper pairs). Remarkably, a dramatic increase of $\sim 30$ % is reported for $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at the maximum pressure value while $T_{c}$ is substantially unaffected in the whole accessed experimental window. We argue and demonstrate that the explanation for the observed results must take the effect of non-magnetic impurities on multi-band superconductivity into account. In particular, the unique possibility to modify the ratio between intra-band and inter-bands scattering rates by acting on structural parameters while keeping the amount of chemical disorder constant is a striking result of our proposed model.

Amorphous ferromagnetism and re-entrant magnetic glassiness in Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$: new insights into the electronic phase diagram of pyrochlore molybdates

We discuss the magnetic properties of a Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystal as investigated by means of different experimental techniques. In the literature, a conventional itinerant ferromagnetic state is reported for the Mo$^{4+}$ sublattice below $\sim 78$ K. However, our results of dc magnetometry, muon spin spectroscopy ($μ^{+}$SR) and high-harmonics magnetic ac susceptibility unambiguously evidence highly disordered conditions in this phase, in spite of the crystalline and chemical order. This disordered magnetic state shares several common features with amorphous ferromagnetic alloys. This scenario for Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is supported by the anomalously high values of the critical exponents, as mainly deduced by a scaling analysis of our dc magnetization data and confirmed by the other techniques. Moreover, $μ^{+}$SR detects a significant static magnetic disorder at the microscopic scale. At the same time, the critical divergence of the third-harmonic component of the ac magnetic susceptibility around $\sim 78$ K leads to additional evidence towards the glassy nature of this magnetic phase. Finally, the longitudinal relaxation of $μ^{+}$ spin polarization (also supported by results of ac susceptibility) evidences re-entrant glassy features similar to amorphous ferromagnets.

Luttinger-Liquid Behavior in the Alternating Spin-Chain System Copper Nitrate

We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully establish the phase diagram and to discuss it in the context of dimerized spin systems.

Quantum spin chain as a potential realization of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model

It is well established that long-range magnetic order is suppressed in magnetic systems whose interactions are low-dimensional. The prototypical example is the S-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain (S-1/2 HAFC) whose ground state is quantum critical. In real S-1/2 HAFC compounds interchain coupling induces long-range magnetic order although with a suppressed ordered moment and reduced Néel temperature compared to the Curie-Weiss temperature. Recently, it was suggested that order can also be suppressed if the interchain interactions are frustrated, as for the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model. Here, we study the new S-1/2 HAFC, (NO)[Cu(NO3)3]. This material shows extreme suppression of order which furthermore is incommensurate revealing the presence of frustration consistent with the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model.

Superconducting properties of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure

The effect of hydrostatic pressure and partial Na substitution on the normal-state properties and the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were investigated. It was found that a partial Na substitution leads to a deviation from the standard $T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity. It was demonstrated that non-Fermi liquid like behavior of the resistivity for K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and some KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples can be explained by disorder effect in the multiband system with rather different quasiparticle effective masses. Concerning the superconducting state our data support the presence of a shallow minimum around 2 GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ for stoichiometric KFe$_2$As$_2$. The analysis of $T_c$ in the K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ at pressures below 1.5 GPa showed, that the reduction of $T_c$ with Na substitution follows the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law with the critical temperature $T_{c0}$ of the clean system (without pair-breaking) which linearly depends on the pressure. Our observations, also, suggest that $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is nearly independent of the lattice compression produced by the Na substitution. Further, we theoretically analyzed the behavior of the band structure under pressure within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). A qualitative agreement between the calculated and the recently in de Haas-van Alphen experiments [T. Terashima et al., Phys.Rev.B89, 134520(2014)] measured pressure dependencies of the Fermi-surface cross-sections has been found. These calculations, also, indicate that the observed minimum around 2~GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ may occur without a change of the pairing symmetry.

Superconducting specific heat jump $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β\ (β\approx 2)$ for K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We present a systematic study of the electronic specific heat jump ($ΔC_{\rm el}$) at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Both $T_c$ and $ΔC_{\rm el}$ monotonously decrease with increasing $x$. The specific heat jump scales approximately with a power-law, $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β$, with $β\approx 2$ determined by the impurity scattering rate, in contrast to most iron-pnictide superconductors, where the remarkable Bud'ko-Ni-Canfield (BNC) scaling $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T^3$ has been found. Both the $T$ dependence of $C_{\rm el}(T)$ in the superconducting state and the nearly quadratic scaling of $ΔC_{\rm el}$ at $T_c$ are well described by the Eliashberg-theory for a two-band $d$-wave superconductor with weak pair-breaking due to nonmagnetic impurities. The disorder induced by the Na substitution significantly suppresses the small gaps leading to gapless states in the slightly disordered superconductor, which results in a large observed residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state for $x > 0$.

Evidence of d-wave Superconductivity in K_(1-x)Na_xFe_2As_2 (x = 0, 0.1) Single Crystals from Low-Temperature Specific Heat Measurements

From the measurement and analysis of the specific heat of high-quality K_(1-x)Na_xFe_2As_2 single crystals we establish the presence of large T^2 contributions with coefficients alpha_sc ~ 30 mJ/mol K^3 at low-T for both x=0 and 0.1. Together with the observed square root field behavior of the specific heat in the superconducting state both findings evidence d-wave superconductivity on almost all Fermi surface sheets with an average gap amplitude of Delta_0 in the range of 0.4 - 0.8 meV. The derived Delta_0 and the observed T_c agree well with the values calculated within the Eliashberg theory, adopting a spin-fluctuation mediated pairing in the intermediate coupling regime.

Specific heat of Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals: unconventional s$_\pm$ multi-band superconductivity with intermediate repulsive interband coupling and sizable attractive intraband couplings

We report a low-temperature specific heat study of high-quality single crystals of the heavily hole doped superconductor Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c \approx 34$\,K, which is evident from the magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. The zero field data manifests a significant electronic specific heat in the normal state with a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ\approx 53$ mJ/mol K$^{2}$. Using a multi-band Eliashberg analysis, we demonstrate that the dependence of the zero field specific heat in the superconducting state is well described by a three-band model with an unconventional s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry and gap magnitudes $Δ_i$ of approximately 2.35, 7.48, and -7.50 meV. Our analysis indicates a non-negligible attractive intraband coupling, which contributes significantly to the relatively high value of $T_c$. The Fermi surface averaged repulsive and attractive coupling strengths are of comparable size and outside the strong coupling limit frequently adopted for describing high-$T_c$ iron pnictide superconductors. We further infer a total mass renormalization of the order of five, including the effects of correlations and electron-boson interactions.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Anisotropic Frustrated Spin-chain Compound Linarite PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase.

The bands undergo a pronounced orbital dependent renormalization, different from what was observed for FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x} and any other pnictides.

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_fΔ(\ln ν)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-zν^{'}} with the critical exponent zν^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-λ_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

Flux jumps and vortex pinning in Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

In this work we present the results of the bulk magnetization measurements in a superconducting state of single crystals of Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The isothermal magnetic field ($H||c$ axis) dependent magnetization ($M$) loops exhibit a second peak (SP) or `fishtail effect', as well as remarkable flux jumps at low temperatures. The critical current density $J_c$ obtained from the $M(H)$ loops is rather high, of the order of 10$^6$ A/cm$^2$. The analysis of the temperature and field dependent $J_c$ implies that high $J_c$ is mainly due to collective (weak) pinning of vortices by dense microscopic point defects with some contribution from a strong pinning mechanism. Pronounced magnetic instabilities in terms of flux jumps depend strongly on temperature as well on the field sweep rate. The field for first flux jump as calculated from an adiabatic model, however, is much lower than the experimentally observed values, and this enhanced stability is attributed to a flux creep phenomenon. The analysis of field dependent magnetic relaxation data additionally supports a collective pinning model. The data further suggests that SP in M(H) is likely related to crossover in creep dynamics from elastic to plastic mechanism. We have constructed the vortex phase diagram on field-temperature plane.

Hole-doping in BaFe$_2$As$_2$: The case of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

Single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with $x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.35, 0.4 were grown using a self-flux high temperature solution growth technique. The superconducting and normal state properties were studied by temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat revealing that the magnetic and structural transition is rapidly suppressed upon Na-substitution at the Ba-site in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, giving rise to superconductivity. A superconducting transition as high as 34 K is reached for a Na-content of $x$=0.4. The positive Hall coefficient confirms that the substitution of Ba by Na results in hole-doping similarly to the substitution of Ba by K. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy was performed on all Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. The Fermi surface of hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is to high extent the same as the Fermi surface found for the K-doped sister compounds, suggesting a similar impact of the substitution of Ba by either K or Na on the electronic band dispersion at the Fermi level

Specific heat and upper critical field in KFe2As2 single crystals

We report low-temperature specific heat measurements for high-quality single crystalline KFe2As2 (T_c about 3.5 K). The investigated zero-field specific heat data yields an unusually large nominal Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n of 94(3) mJ/mol K^2 which is however significantly affected by extrinsic contributions as evidenced by a sizable residual linear specific heat and various theoretical considerations including also an analysis of Kadowaki-Woods relations. Then KFe2As2 should be classified as a weak to intermediately strong coupling superconductor with a total electron-boson coupling constant lambda_tot near 1 (including a calculated weak electron-phonon coupling constant of lambda_el-ph =0.17. From specific heat and ac susceptibility studies in external magnetic fields the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. We confirm the high anisotropy of the upper critical fields B_c2(T) ranging from a factor of 5 near T_c to a slightly reduced value approaching T=0 for fields B || ab$ and || c and show that their ratio Gamma slightly exceeds the mass anisotropy of 4.35 derived from our full-relativistic LDA-band structure calculations. Its slight reduction when approaching T=0 is not a consequence of Pauli-limiting as in less perfect samples but point likely to a multiband effect. We also report irreversibility field data obtained from ac susceptibility measurements. The double-maximum in the T-dependence of its imaginary part for fields B || c indicates a peak-effect in the T-dependence of critical currents.

Spin-state transition, magnetism and local crystal structure in Eu_{1-x}Ca_xCoO_{3-d}

The doping series Eu1-xCaxCoO3-d provides a rather peculiar way to study the spin-state transition in cobalt-based complex oxides since partial substitution of Eu3+ ions by Ca2+ ions does not increase the mean valence state of cobalt but is accompanied by appearance of oxygen vacancies in the ratio d \sim x/2. In the parent compound EuCoO3, the low spin (LS)-high spin (HS) transition takes place at temperatures so high that the chemical decomposition prevents its direct observation. The substitution of Eu3+ for Ca2+ in this system shifts the LS-HS transition to lower temperatures. The energy gap associated with this transition in octahedrally-coordinated Co3+ ions changes from 1940 K in EuCoO3 to 1540 K in Eu0.9Ca0.1CoO2.95 and 1050 K in Eu0.8Ca0.2CoO2.9. Besides, each O2- vacancy reduces the local coordination of two neighboring Co3+ ions from octahedral to pyramidal thereby locally creating magnetically active sites which couple into dimers. These dimers at low temperatures form another gapped magnetic system with very different energy scale, D~3 K, on the background of intrinsically non-magnetic lattice of octahedrally-coordinated low-spin Co3+ ions.

Weak ferrimagnetism and multiple magnetization reversal in α-Cr3(PO4)2

The chromium(II) orthophosphate α-Cr3(PO4)2 is a weak ferrimagnet with the Curie temperature TC = 29 K confirmed by a λ-type peak in specific heat. Dominant antiferromagnetic interactions in this system are characterized by the Weiss temperature Θ = - 96 K, indicating an intermediate frustration ratio |Θ|/TC ~ 3. In its magnetically ordered states α-Cr3(PO4)2 exhibits a remarkable sequence of temperature-induced magnetization reversals sensitive to the protocol of measurements, i.e. either field-cooled or zero-field-cooled regimes. The reduction of the effective magnetic moment 4.5 μB/Cr2+, as compared to the spin-only moment 4.9 μB/Cr2+, cannot be ascribed to the occurence of the low-spin state in any crystallographic site of the Jahn-Teller active 3d4 Cr2+ ions. X-ray absorption spectra at the K-edge indicate divalent chromium and unravel the high-spin state of these ions at the L2,3-edges. Weak ferrimagnetism and multiple magnetization reversal phenomena seen in this compound could be ascribed to incomplete cancellation and distortion of partial spontaneous magnetization functions of Cr2+ in its six crystallographically inequivalent positions.

Calorimetric study of the superconducting and normal state properties of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We present a calorimetric study on single crystals of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0, 0.032, 0.051, 0.056, 0.063, and 0.146). The combined first order spin-density wave/structural transition occurs in the parent CaFe2As2 compound at 168 K and gradually shifts to lower temperature for low doping levels (x = 0.032 and x = 0.051). It is completely suppressed upon higher doping x = 0.056. Simultaneously, superconductivity appears at lower temperature with a transition temperature around Tc = 14.1 K for Ca(Fe0.937Co0.063)2As2. The phase diagram of Ca(Fe0.937Co0.063)2As2 has been derived and the upper critical field is found to be H(c) c2 = 11.5

Disorder-induced Spin Gap in the Zigzag Spin-1/2 Chain Cuprate Sr_{0.9}Ca_{0.1}CuO_2

We report a comparative study of 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spin lattice relaxation rates, T_1^{-1}, on undoped SrCuO_2 and Ca doped Sr_{0.9}Ca_{0.1}CuO_2 spin chain compounds. A temperature independent T_1^{-1} is observed for SrCuO_2 as expected for an S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. Surprisingly, we observe an exponential decrease of T_1^{-1} for T < 90,K in the Ca-doped sample evidencing the opening of a spin gap. The data analysis within the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations suggests an impurity driven small alternation of the J_2-exchange coupling as a possible cause of the spin gap.

Magnetic properties and revisited exchange integrals of the frustrated chain cuprate PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$ - linarite

We present a detailed study in the paramagnetic regime of the frustrated $s$ = 1/2 spin-compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Our data reveal highly anisotropic values for the saturation field along the crystallographic main directions, with $\sim$ 7.6, $\sim$ 10.5 and $\sim$ 8.5\,T for the $a$, $b$, and $c$ axes, respectively. In the paramagnetic regime, this behavior is explained mainly by the anisotropy of the \textit{g}-factor but leaving room for an easy-axis exchange anisotropy. Within the isotropic $J_1$-$J_2$ spin model our experimental data are described by various theoretical approaches yielding values for the exchange interactions $J_1$ $\sim$ -100\,K and $J_2$ $\sim$ 36\,K. These main intrachain exchange integrals are significantly larger as compared to the values derived in two previous studies in the literature and shift the frustration ratio $α= J_2/|J_1|$ $\approx$ 0.36 of linarite closer to the 1D critical point at 0.25. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements further prove that the static susceptibility is dominated by the intrinsic spin susceptibility. The Knight shift as well as the broadening of the linewidth in ESR and NMR at elevated temperatures indicate a highly frustrated system with the onset of magnetic correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 2.75(5)\,K, in agreement with the calculated exchange constants.

Multi-gap superconductivity in single crystals of Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$: A calorimetric investigation

We investigate the electronic properties and the superconducting gap characteristics of a single crystal of hole-doped 122 Fe-pnictide Ba$_{0.65}$Na$_{0.35}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ by means of specific heat measurements. The specific heat exhibits a pronounced anomaly around the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ = 29.4 K, and a small residual part at low temperature. In a magnetic field of 90 kOe, the transition is broadened and $T_c$ is lowered insignificantly by an amount $\sim$ 1.5 K. We estimate a high electronic coefficient in the normal state with a value 57.5 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^2$, being consistent with hole-doped 122 compounds. The temperature-dependent superconducting electronic specific heat cannot be described with single-gap BCS theory under weak coupling approach. Instead, our analysis implies a presence of two s-wave like gaps with magnitudes $Δ_1(0)/k_BT_c$ = 1.06 and $Δ_2(0)/k_BT_c$ = 2.08 with their respective weights of 48% and 52%. While our results have qualitative similarities with other hole-doped 122 materials, the gap's magnitude and their ratio are quite different.

Orthogonal spin arrangement as possible ground state of three - dimensional Shastry - Sutherland network in Ba3Cu3In4O12

The Ba3Cu3In4O12 stands for unique topology of the magnetic subsystem. It consists of rotated by 90\Box$^b$ relative to each other "paper-chain" columns made of vertex-sharing CuIO4 and CuIIO4 planar units. The overall pattern of the copper ions is that of a three-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland network. At high temperatures, the magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law with positive Weiss temperature indicating strong predominance of ferromagnetic coupling. At low temperatures, however, this compound reaches the antiferromagnetically ordered state and experiences non-trivial succession of two spin-flop and two spin-flip transitions reaching full saturation in modest magnetic fields. Here we show that the possible ground state in Ba3Cu3In4O12 can be three-dimensional orthogonal arrangement of the Cu2+ (S = 1/2) magnetic moments forming three virtually independent antiferromagnetic subsystems. In this arrangement, favored by anisotropic exchange interactions, the quantum fluctuations provide the coupling between three mutually orthogonal magnetic subsystems resulting in an impressive "order by disorder" effect.

Fishtail effect and vortex dynamics in LiFeAs single crystals

We investigate the fishtail effect, critical current density ($J_c$) and vortex dynamics in LiFeAs single crystals. The sample exhibits a second peak (SP) in the magnetization loop only with the field $||$ c-axis. We calculate a reasonably high $J_c$, however, values are lower than in 'Ba-122' and '1111'-type FeAs-compounds. Magnetic relaxation data imply a strong pinning which appears not to be due to conventional defects. Instead, its behavior is similar to that of the triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Our data suggest that the origin of the SP may be related to a vortex lattice phase transition. We have constructed the vortex phase diagram for LiFeAs on the field-temperature plane.

Magnetoelastic and structural properties of azurite Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 from neutron scattering and muon spin rotation

Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, has been considered an ideal example of a one-dimensional (1D) diamond chain antiferromagnet. Early studies of this material imply the presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N \sim 1.9$ K while magnetization measurements have revealed a 1/3 magnetization plateau. Until now, no corroborating neutron scattering results have been published to confirm the ordered magnetic moment structure. We present recent neutron diffraction results which reveal the presence of commensurate magnetic order in azurite which coexists with significant magnetoelastic strain. The latter of these effects may indicate the presence of spin frustration in zero applied magnetic field. Muon spin rotation, $μ$SR, reveals an onset of short-range order below 3K and confirms long-range order below $T_N$.

The superconducting gaps in LiFeAs: Joint study of specific heat and ARPES

We present specific heat, c_P, and ARPES data on single crystals of the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs. A pronounced anomaly is found in c_P at the superconducting transition. The electronic contribution can be described by two s-type energy gaps with magnitudes of approximately Delta1 = 1.2 meV and Delta2 = 2.6 meV and a normal-state gamma coefficient of 10 mJ/mol K^2. All these values are in remarkable agreement with ARPES results.

Transition from a phase-segregated state to single-phase incommensurate sodium ordering in Na_xCoO_2 with x \approx 0.53

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction investigations of two single crystals of Na_xCoO_2 from different batches with composition x = 0.525-0.530 reveal homogeneous incommensurate sodium ordering with propagation vector (0.53 0.53 0) at room-temperature. The incommensurate (qq0) superstructure exists between 220 K and 430 K. The value of q varies between q = 0.514 and 0.529, showing a broad plateau at the latter value between 260 K and 360 K. On cooling, unusual reversible phase segregation into two volume fractions is observed. Below 220 K, one volume fraction shows the well-known commensurate orthorhombic x = 0.50 superstructure, while a second volume fraction with x = 0.55 exhibits another commensurate superstructure, presumably with a 6a x 6a x c hexagonal supercell. We argue that the commensurate-to-incommensurate transition is an intrinsic feature of samples with Na concentrations x = 0.5 + d with d ~ 0.03.

Ga substitution as an effective variation of Mn-Tb coupling in multiferroic TbMnO3

Ga for Mn substitution in multiferroic TbMnO$_{3}$ has been performed in order to study the influence of Mn-magnetic ordering on the Tb-magnetic sublattice. Complete characterization of TbMn$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_{3}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.04, 0.1) samples, including magnetization, impedance spectroscopy, and x-ray resonant scattering and neutron diffraction on powder and single crystals has been carried out. We found that keeping the same crystal structure for all compositions, Ga for Mn substitution leads to the linear decrease of $T_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn}$ and $τ^{\rm Mn}$, reflecting the reduction of the exchange interactions strength $J_{\rm Mn-Mn}$ and the change of the Mn-O-Mn bond angles. At the same time, a strong suppression of both the induced and the separate Tb-magnetic ordering has been observed. This behavior unambiguously prove that the exchange fields $J_{\rm Mn-Tb}$ have a strong influence on the Tb-magnetic ordering in the full temperature range below $T_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn}$ and actually stabilize the Tb-magnetic ground state.

High field level crossing studies on spin dimers in the low dimensional quantum spin system Na$_2$T$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$(H$_2$O)$_2$ with T=Ni,Co,Fe,Mn

In this paper we demonstrate the application of high magnetic fields to study the magnetic properties of low dimensional spin systems. We present a case study on the series of 2-leg spin-ladder compounds Na$_2$T$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$(H$_2$O)$_2$ with T = Ni, Co, Fe and Mn. In all compounds the transition metal is in the $T^{2+}$ high spin configuation. The localized spin varies from S=1 to 3/2, 2 and 5/2 within this series. The magnetic properties were examined experimentally by magnetic susceptibility, pulsed high field magnetization and specific heat measurements. The data are analysed using a spin hamiltonian description. Although the transition metal ions form structurally a 2-leg ladder, an isolated dimer model consistently describes the observations very well. This behaviour can be understood in terms of the different coordination and superexchange angles of the oxalate ligands along the rungs and legs of the 2-leg spin ladder. All compounds exhibit magnetic field driven ground state changes which at very low temperatures lead to a multistep behaviour in the magnetization curves. In the Co and Fe compounds a strong axial anisotropy induced by the orbital magnetism leads to a nearly degenerate ground state and a strongly reduced critical field. We find a monotonous decrease of the intradimer magnetic exchange if the spin quantum number is increased.

Determining ethylene group disorder levels in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br

We present a detailed structural investigation of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br at temperatures $T$ from 9 to 300 K. Anomalies in the $T$ dependence of the lattice parameters are associated with a glass-like transition previously reported at $T_g$ = 77 K. From structure refinements at 9, 100 and 300 K, the orthorhombic crystalline symmetry, space group {\it Pnma}, is established at all temperatures. Further, we extract the $T$ dependence of the occupation factor of the eclipsed conformation of the terminal ethylene groups of the BEDT-TTF molecule. At 300 K, we find 67(2) %, with an increase to 97(3) % at 9 K. We conclude that the glass-like transition is not primarily caused by configurational freezing-out of the ethylene groups.

Giant spin canting in the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n observed by 13C-NMR

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on copper pyrimidine dinitrate [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n, a one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet with alternating local symmetry. From the local susceptibility measured by NMR at the three inequivalent carbon sites in the pyrimidine molecule we deduce a giant spin canting, i.e., an additional staggered magnetization perpendicular to the applied external field at low temperatures. The magnitude of the transverse magnetization, the spin canting of 52 degrees at 10 K and 9.3 T and its temperature dependence are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization calculations.

High-field magnetization study of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$]$_n$ with a field-induced gap

We present a high-field magnetization study of the $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$]$_n$. For this material, as result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a staggered $g$ tensor, the ground state is characterized by an anisotropic field-induced spin excitation gap and a staggered magnetization. Our data reveal the qualitatively different behavior in the directions of maximum and zero spin excitation gap. The data are analyzed via exact diagonalization of a linear spin chain with up to 20 sites and on basis of the Bethe ansatz equations, respectively. For both directions we find very good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations. We extract the magnetic coupling strength $J/k_B$ along the chain direction to 36.3(5) K and determine the field dependence of the staggered magnetization component $m_s$.
