Enhanced superconductivity and moderate spin fluctuations suppressed at low energies in heavily electron-doped La1111-based superconductor

To elucidate the origin of re-enhanced high-$T_c$ phase in the heavily electron-doped Fe-pnictides, systematic $^{75}$As NMR studies are performed on heavily electron-doped LaFe$Pn$O$_{0.75}$H$_{0.25}$ by controlling the pnictogen height ($h_{Pn}$) from the Fe plane through the substitution at $Pn$(=As) site with Sb or P. The measurements of nuclear spin relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) and Knight shift ($K$) reveal that the moderate spin fluctuations at high temperatures are suppressed toward low temperatures. Such characteristic spin fluctuations with gap like feature at low energies are more enlarged in higher $T_c$ compounds with higher $h_{Pn}$, while those are totally suppressed in non-superconducting compounds with lower $h_{Pn}$. This implies that the contribution of the finite energy part in the spin fluctuation spectrum is crucial for enhancing $T_c$ in the heavily electron-doped regime. This is in contrast to many cases of typical Fe-based compounds with hole and electron Fermi surfaces of similar sizes, where the spin fluctuations at low energies develop significantly at low temperatures. The features in the heavily electron-doped states are discussed in relation with the characteristics of the faint hole Fermi surface derived from $d_{xy}$ orbital that rises when $h_{Pn}$ is high, together with the enhanced electron correlation effects.

Multipole polaron in the devil's staircase of CeSb

Rare-earth intermetallic compounds exhibit rich phenomena induced by the interplay between localized $f$ orbitals and conduction electrons. However, since the energy scale of the crystal-electric-field splitting is only a few millielectronvolts, the nature of the mobile electrons accompanied by collective crystal-electric-field excitations has not been unveiled. Here, we examine the low-energy electronic structures of CeSb through the anomalous magnetostructural transitions below the N$é$el temperature, $\sim$17 K, termed the 'devil's staircase', using laser angle-resolved photoemission, Raman and neutron scattering spectroscopies. We report another type of electron-boson coupling between mobile electrons and quadrupole crystal-electric-field excitations of the 4$f$ orbitals, which renormalizes the Sb 5$p$ band prominently, yielding a kink at a very low energy ($\sim$7 meV). This coupling strength is strong and exhibits anomalous step-like enhancement during the devil's staircase transition, unveiling a new type of quasiparticle, named the 'multipole polaron', comprising a mobile electron dressed with a cloud of the quadrupole crystal-electric-field polarization.

Observation of the bands with $d_{xy}$ orbital character near the Fermi level in NdFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We studied the band structure of NdFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. Two of the hole bands, $α_1$ $(d_{xz})$ and $α_3$ $(d_{z^2})$, were observed at the Brillouin zone center in the $P$-polarized light configuration, while the other two hole bands, $α_2$ $(d_{yz})$ and $γ$ $(d_{xy})$, were observed in the $S$-polarized alternative. The observed $γ$ band shifts downwards as $x$ increases, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction for the change in bond angle of As/P-Fe-As/P. Furthermore, a small amount of the $d_{xy}$ orbital component was observed at the same binding energy as that of the top of the $α_1$ band, thus indicating the band reconstruction of the originally degenerate $α_1$ and $α_2$ $(d_{xz}/d_{yz})$ bands by the unoccupied $d_{xy}$ band. The change in the energy level of the $α_1$ band top with $d_{xy}$ orbital character is accompanied by a $T_{c}$ upturn at $0.2 < x < 0.4$. The $T_{c}$ continues to increase as the $α_1$ band shifts downward, crossing the Fermi level. The incipient band with the $d_{xy}$ orbital character on its top could be an important ingredient for high $T_{c}$ 1111-type iron-based superconductors.

Superconducting gap and nematic resonance at the quantum critical point observed by Raman scattering in $\mathrm{BaFe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$

We report comprehensive temperature and doping-dependences of the Raman scattering spectra for $\mathrm{BaFe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($x =$ 0, 0.07, 0.24, 0.32, and 0.38), focusing on the nematic fluctuation and the superconducting responses. With increasing $x$, the bare nematic transition temperature estimated from the Raman spectra reaches $T =$ 0 K at the optimal doping, which indicates a quantum critical point (QCP) at this composition. In the superconducting compositions, in addition to the pair breaking peaks observed in the $A_{\mathrm{1g}}$ and $B_{\mathrm{1g}}$ spectra, another strong $B_{\mathrm{1g}}$ peak appears below the superconducting transition temperature which is ascribed to the nematic resonance peak. The observation of this peak indicates significant nematic correlations in the superconducting state near the QCP in this compound.

Band-dependent superconducting gap in SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.65}$P$_{0.35}$)$_{2}$ studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The isovalent-substituted iron pnictide compound SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ exhibits multiple evidence for nodal superconductivity via various experimental probes, such as the penetration depth, nuclear magnetic resonance and specific heat measurements. The direct identification of the nodal superconducting (SC) gap structure is challenging, partly because the presence of nodes is not protected by symmetry but instead caused by an accidental sign change of the order parameter, and also because of the three-dimensionality of the electronic structure. We have studied the SC gaps of SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.65}$P$_{0.35}$)$_{2}$ in three-dimensional momentum space by synchrotron and laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The three hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the zone center have SC gaps with different magnitudes, whereas the SC gaps of the electron FSs at the zone corner are almost isotropic and $k_{z}$-independent. We propose that the SC gap of the outer hole FS changes sign around the Z-X [($0, 0, 2π$)-($π,π, 2π$)] direction.

Carrier localization due to local magnetic order induced by magnetic impurities in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM = Mn and Cr) as seen via optical spectra

The charge dynamics of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM = Mn and Cr) has been investigated by optical spectroscopy. It was found that in addition to the strong suppression of the coherent charge transport, the magnetic impurity induces a novel spectral feature related to the carrier localization in the far-infrared region above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. We attribute it to the cooperative effect between conduction electrons and local magnetic order induced by magnetic impurities. The present results demonstrate that Mn and Cr are not conventional magnetic pair-breakers in iron pnictides.

Effect of magnetism on lattice dynamics in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ as seen via high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering

Phonon spectra of detwinned {SrFe$_2$As$_2$} crystals, as measured by inelastic x-ray scattering, show clear anisotropy accompanying the magneto-structural transition at 200 K. We model the mode splitting using magnetic DFT calculations, including a phenomenological reduction in force-constant anisotropy that can be attributed to magnetic fluctuations. This serves as a starting point for a general model of phonons in this material applicable to both magnetic and non-magnetic phase. Using this model, the measured splitting in the magnetic phase below $\it T_{N}$, and the measured phonon linewidth, we set a lower bound on the mean magnetic fluctuation frequency above $\it T_{N}$ at 210 K.

Multiple Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations and Novel Evolution of Tc in Iron-based superconductors LaFe(As1-xPx)(O1-yFy) revealed by 31P-NMR Studies

We report on 31P-NMR studies of LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_{y}) over wide compositions for 0<x<1 and 0<y<0.14, which provide clear evidence that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFMSFs) are one of the indispensable elements for enhancing Tc. Systematic 31P-NMR measurements revealed two types of AFMSFs in the temperature evolution, that is, one is the AFMSFs that develop rapidly down to Tc with low-energy characteristics, and the other, with relatively higher energy than the former, develops gradually upon cooling from high temperature. The low-energy AFMSFs in low y (electron doping) over a wide x (pnictogen height suppression) range are associated with the two orbitals of d_{xz/yz}, whereas the higher-energy ones for a wide y region around low x originate from the three orbitals of d_{xy} and d_{xz/yz}. We remark that the nonmonotonic variation of Tc as a function of x and y in LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) is attributed to these multiple AFMSFs originating from degenerated multiple 3d orbitals inherent to Fe-pnictide superconductors.

NMR evidence for an intimate relationship between antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and extended s-wave superconductivity in mono-crystalline SrFe2(As_{1-x}P_{x})2

We report systematic 31P-NMR study on iron (Fe)-based superconductors SrFe2(As_{1-x}P_{x})2 (Sr122AsP), in which a superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc at x=0.35 increases from Tc=26 K up to 33 K by annealing an as-grown mono-crystalline sample. The present NMR study has unraveled that Tc reaches a highest value of 33 K at x=0.35 around a quantum critical point at which antiferromagnetic (AFM) order disappears. When noting that the SC transition disappears at x=0.6 where the AFM spin fluctuations (SFs) are no longer present, we remark that the onset and increase of Tc are apparently associated with the emergence and enhancement of AFM-SFs, respectively. In the SC state, the residual density of state (RDOS) at the Fermi energy EF in the SC state becomes much smaller for the annealed sample than for the as-grown one, suggesting that some inhomogeneity and/or imperfection for the latter increases RDOS as expected for unconventional SC state with nodal gap. These findings in Sr122AsP are consistent with the unconventional s(+-)-wave Cooper pairing state that is mediated by AFM-SFs. We also discuss other key-ingredients besides the AFM-SFs to increase Tc further.

Optical Study of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure: Coexistence of spin-density-wave gap and superconductivity

Temperature-dependent reflectivity measurements in the frequency range 85 - 7000 cm$^{-1}$ were performed on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals under pressure up to $\sim$5 GPa. The corresponding pressure- and temperature-dependent optical conductivity was analyzed with the Drude-Lorentz model to extract the coherent and incoherent contributions. The gradual suppression of the spin-density wave (SDW) state with increasing pressure and the appearance of the superconducting phase coexisting with the SDW phase at 3.6~GPa were observed. At 3.6~GPa, the reflectivity reaches unity below $\sim$95~cm$^{-1}$ indicating the opening of the superconducting gap and shows a full gap tendency at 6 K.

Absence of the 1/8 -anomaly in oxygen isotope effect on YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We have prepared oxygen isotope exchanged crystals of impurity-free YBCO with various oxygen concentents, and examined pure doping ($p$) dependance of isotope effect on superconducting transition temperature. With decreasing oxygen contents, the isotope exponent $α$ monotonously increases without any anomaly around $p = 1/8$. The monotonous increase in $α$ indicates that phonons are involved in the mechanism which causes the monotonous $T_c$ suppression with underdoping.

Comparative study of the effects of electron irradiation and natural disorder in single crystals of SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($x=$0.35) superconductor

London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in single crystals of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($x=$0.35) iron - based superconductor. The influence of disorder on the transition temperature, $T_c$, and on $λ(T)$ was investigated. The effects of scattering controlled by the annealing of as-grown crystals was compared with the effects of artificial disorder introduced by 2.5~MeV electron irradiation. The low temperature behavior of $λ(T)$ can be described by a power-law function, $Δλ(T)=AT^n$, with the exponent $n$ close to one in pristine annealed samples, as expected for superconducting gap with line nodes. Upon $1.2 \times 10^{19}$ \ecm irradiation, the exponent $n$ increases rapidly exceeding a dirty limit value of $n=$ 2 implying that the nodes in the superconducting gap are accidental and can be lifted by the disorder. The variation of the exponent $n$ with $T_c$ is much stronger in the irradiated crystals compared to the crystals in which disorder was controlled by the annealing of the growth defects. We discuss the results in terms of different influence of different types of disorder on intra- and inter- band scattering.

Emergence of Novel Antiferromagnetic Order Intervening between Two Superconducting Phases in LaFe(As_1-x_P_x_)O: 31P-NMR Studies

We revealed novel phase deagram of Fe-pnictide high-Tc superconductor LaFe(As_{1-x}P_{x})O in wide doping level (0.3<x<1) by P-NMR. Systematic 31P-NMR studies revealed the emergence of the antiferromagnetic ordered phase (AFM-2) in 0.4 < x < 0.7 that intervenes between two superconductivity (SC-1/SC-2) phases. The 31P-NMR Knight shift points to the appearance of the sharp density of states at the Fermi level that is derived from d_{3Z^2?r^2} orbit, which is less relevant with the onset of the SC-2. On the other hand, we remark that the AFM spin fluctuations arising from the interband nesting on the d_{XZ}/d_{YZ} orbits must be a key ingredient for the occurrence of SC around AFM-2.

Enhancement of Superconducting Transition Temperature Due to Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in Iron-pnictides LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) : 31P-NMR Studies

Systematic P-NMR studies on LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) with y=0.05 and 0.1 have revealed that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFMSFs) at low energies are markedly enhanced around x=0.6 and 0.4, respectively, and as a result, Tc exhibits respective peaks at 24 K and 27 K against the P-substitution for As. This result demonstrates that the AFMSFs are responsible for the increase in Tc for LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) as a primary mediator of the Cooper pairing. From a systematic comparison of AFMSFs with a series of (La_{1-z}Y_z)FeAsO_δ compounds in which Tc reaches 50 K for z=0.95, we remark that a moderate development of AFMSFs causes the Tc to increase up to 50 K under the condition that the local lattice parameters of FeAs tetrahedron approaches those of the regular tetrahedron. We propose that the T_c of Fe-pnictides exceeding 50 K is maximized under an intimate collaboration of the AFMSFs and other factors originating from the optimization of the local structure.

Evolution of the Phase Diagram of LaFeP$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$O$_{1-y}$F$_{y}$ ($y$ = 0 -- 0.1)

P/As-substitution effects on the transport properties of polycrystalline LaFeP$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$O$_{1-y}$F$_{y}$ with $x$ = 0 -- 1.0 and $y$ = 0 -- 0.1 have been studied. In the F-free samples ($y$ = 0), a new superconducting (SC) dome with a maximum $T_{c}$ of 12 K is observed around $x$ = 0 -- 0.3. This is separated from another SC dome with $T_{c}$ $\sim$10 K at $x$ = 0.6 -- 0.8 by an antiferromagnetic region ($x$ = 0.3 -- 0.6), giving a two-dome feature in the $T_{c}-x$ phase diagram. As $y$ increases, the two SC domes merge together, changing to a double peak structure at $y$ = 0.05 and a single dome at $y$ = 0.1. This proves the presence of two different Fermi surface states in this system.

Strongly three-dimensional electronic structure and Fermi Surfaces of SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.65}$P$_{0.35}$)$_{2}$: Comparison with BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

The isovalent-substituted iron-pnictide superconductor SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ ($x$=0.35) has a slightly higher optimum critical temperature than the similar system BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, and its parent compound SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ has a much higher Néel temperature than BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. We have studied the band structure and the Fermi surfaces of optimally-doped SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Three holelike Fermi surfaces (FSs) around (0,0) and two electronlike FSs around ($π$,$π$) have been observed as in the case of BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. Measurements with different photon energies have revealed that one of the hole FSs is more strongly warped along the $k_{z}$ direction than the corresponding one in BaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, while the electron FSs are almost cylindrical unlike corrugated ones in BaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. Comparison of the ARPES data with first-principles band-structure calculation revealed that the quasiparticle mass renormalization factors are different not only between bands of different orbital character but also between the hole and electron FSs of the same orbital character. By examining nesting conditions between the hole and electron FSs, we conclude that magnetic interactions between FeAs layers rather than FS nesting play an important role in stabilizing the antiferromagnetic order. The insensitivity of superconductivity to the FS nesting can be explained if only the $d_{xy}$ and/or $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals are active in inducing superconductivity or if FS nesting is not important for superconductivity.

Nodal superconductivity in isovalently substituted SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ pnictide superconductor at the optimal doping, $x=$0.35

Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in optimally - doped, $x=$0.35, as-grown ($T_c \approx$25 K, RRR=$ρ(300K)/ρ(T_c)$=4.5) and annealed ($T_c \approx$35 K, RRR=6.4) single crystals of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ iron - based superconductor. Annealing increases the RRR and decreases the absolute value of the London penetration depth from $λ(0) = 300 \pm 10$ nm in as-grown sample to $λ(0) = 275 \pm 10$ nm. At low temperatures, $λ(T) \sim T$ indicating superconducting gap with line nodes. Analysis of the full - temperature range superfluid density is consistent with the line nodes, but differs from the simple single - gap $d-$wave. The observed behavior is very similar to that of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$, showing that isovalently substituted pnictides are inherently different from the charge - doped materials.

The change of electronic state and crystal structure by post-annealing in superconducting SrFe2(As0.65P0.35)2

We investigated the annealing effects on the physical properties of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($x=0.35$). The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) increased from 26 K to 33 K by annealing. The X-ray diffraction measurement suggested that the annealed crystals have the shorter/longer $a/c$-axes and the larger pnictogen height $h_\mathrm{Pn}$. This must be linked to the $T_c$-enhancement by annealing. Moreover, it was found that the post-annealing decreased the electronic specific heat coefficient at $T$=0 K, $γ_r$, and changed the magnetic field ($H$) dependence from sub-linear $γ_r\propto H^{0.7}$ to $H$-linear $γ_r\propto H$. This can be attributed the electronic change from dirty to clean superconductors with $s_{\pm}$ gap.

In-plane optical spectra of Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$: Overdoping and disorder effect on residual conductivity

We measured the temperature dependence of the in-plane polarized reflectivity spectra of twin-free Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals with different Ca-concentrations (x=0,0.11 and 0.16) from optimally doped to heavily overdoped region. Low energy optical conductivity spectra showed a Drude-like residual conductivity at temperatures far below the superconducting transition temperature, which indicates the presence of unpaired-normal carriers in the superconducting state. Comparing the spectra at a fixed Ca-content or at a fixed doping level, we have revealed that the carrier overdoping increases unpaired carriers in addition to those induced by the Ca-disorder. We also found the superconducting behavior of the one-dimensional CuO chains for the Ca-free samples.

Unconventional multiband superconductivity with nodes in single-crystalline SrFe2(As_0.65P_0.35)2 as seen via 31P-NMR and specific heat

We report 31P-NMR and specific heat measurements on an iron (Fe)-based superconductor SrFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc=26 K, which have revealed the development of antiferromagnetic correlations in the normal state and the unconventional superconductivity(SC) with nodal gap dominated by the gapless low-lying quasiparticle excitations. The results are consistently argued with an unconventional multiband SC state with the gap-size ratio of different bands being significantly large; the large full gaps in s\pm-wave state keep Tc high, whereas a small gap with a nodal-structure causes gapless feature under magnetic field. The present results will develop an insight into the strong material dependence of SC-gap structure in Fe-based superconductors.

Effect of cation size variance on spin and orbital order in Eu$_{1-x}$(La$_{0.254}$Y$_{0.746}$)$_{x}$VO$_3$

We have investigated the $R$-ion ($R$ = rare earth or Y) size variance effect on spin/orbital order in Eu$_{1-x}$(La$_{0.254}$Y$_{0.746}$)$_{x}$VO$_3$. The size variance disturbs one-dimensional orbital correlation in $C$-type spin/$G$-type orbital ordered states and suppresses this spin/orbital order. In contrast, it stabilizes the other spin/orbital order. The results of neutron and resonant X-ray scattering denote that in the other ordered phase, the spin/orbital patterns are $G$-type/$C$-type, respectively.

Softening of the Bond-Stretching Phonon of Ba1-xKxBiO3 at the Metal to Insulator Transition

The dispersion of phonons in Ba1-xKxBiO3 along the (3+q, 0, 0) direction in reciprocal space was determined for x=0, 0.30, 0.37, 0.52 using high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering. The observed phonon energies near Γwere in good agreement with published optical data. It was found that two high-energy modes strongly soften near q=0.25 when the system becomes metallic (x >0.35). There was no softening in the insulating phase, even at x=0.30, very near the metal-insulator transition. This suggests that the phonon softening is linked to the appearance of the Fermi-surface.

Electrical transport properties of high quality Bi-2223 crystal

We have studied electrical transport properties of a high quality Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x crystal below a superconducting critical temperature, Tc. In magnetic fields B parallel to the c-axis just above a voltage response onset resistance vs temperature data are well fitted to the vortex-glass model. Obtained from the vortex-glass analysis a melting transition boundary for Bi-2223 crystal shifted towards lower temperatures compared to previously reported data for a (Bi,Pb)-2223 single crystal. The critical current density, Jc, of Bi-2223 crystals is close to presented elsewhere Jc values for Bi-2223 tapes suggesting a principal role of weak intrinsic pinning properties of Bi-2223 as a main limiting factor of Jc of Bi-2223 conductors.

Measurements of the Electric Form Factor of the Neutron up to Q2=3.4 GeV2 using the Reaction He3(e,e'n)pp

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from studies of the reaction He3(e,e'n)pp in quasi-elastic kinematics in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Longitudinally polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized target in which the nuclear polarization was oriented perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons that were registered in a large-solid-angle detector. Probing Quark-Gluon Interactions with Transverse Polarized Scattering

We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer.

Scaling of the F_2 structure function in nuclei and quark distributions at x>1

We present new data on electron scattering from a range of nuclei taken in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. For heavy nuclei, we observe a rapid falloff in the cross section for $x>1$, which is sensitive to short range contributions to the nuclear wave-function, and in deep inelastic scattering corresponds to probing extremely high momentum quarks. This result agrees with higher energy muon scattering measurements, but is in sharp contrast to neutrino scattering measurements which suggested a dramatic enhancement in the distribution of the `super-fast' quarks probed at x>1. The falloff at x>1 is noticeably stronger in ^2H and ^3He, but nearly identical for all heavier nuclei.

Doping dependence of Normal-state Property in the Iron-based Oxypnictide Superconductors LaFeAsO1-y probed by 57Fe-NMR and 75As-NMR/NQR

We report systematic 57Fe-NMR and 75As-NMR/NQR studies on an underdoped sample (T_c=20 K), an optimally doped sample (T_c=28 K), and an overdoped sample (T_c=22 K) of oxygen-deficient iron (Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-y}$. A microscopic phase separation between superconducting domains and magnetic domains is shown to take place in the underdoped sample, indicating a local inhomogeneity in association with the density distribution of oxygen deficiencies. As a result, 1/T_1T in the normal state of the superconducting domain decreases significantly upon cooling at both the Fe and As sites regardless of the electron-doping level in LaFeAsO_{1-y}. On the basis of this result, we claim that $1/T_1T$ is not always enhanced by antiferromagnetic fluctuations close to an antiferromagnetic phase in the underdoped superconducting sample. This contrasts with the behavior in hole-doped Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe2As2(T_c= 38 K), which exhibits a significant increase in $1/T_1T$ upon cooling. We remark that the crucial difference between the normal-state properties of LaFeAsO_{1-y} and Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe2As2 originates from the fact that the relevant Fermi surface topologies are differently modified depending on whether electrons or holes are doped into the FeAs layers.

Spectroscopic Evidence for Competing Order-Induced Pseudogap Phenomena and Unconventional Low-Energy Excitations in High-TC Cuprate Superconductors

The low-energy excitations of cuprate superconductors exhibit various characteristics that differ from those of simple Bogoliubov quasiparticles for pure d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors. Here we report experimental studies of spatially resolved quasiparticle tunnelling spectra of hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors that manifest direct evidences for the presence of competing orders (COs) in the cuprates. In contrast to conventional type-II superconductors that exhibit enhanced local density of states (LDOS) peaking at zero energy near the centre of field-induced vortices, the vortex-state LDOS of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (Y-123) and La_{0.1}Sr_{0.9}CuO_2 (La-112) remains suppressed inside the vortex core, with pseudogap (PG)-like features at an energy larger (smaller) than the superconducting (SC) gap Δ_{SC} in Y-123 (La-112). Energy histograms of the SC and PG features reveal steady spectral shifts from SC to PG with increasing magnetic field H. These findings may be explained by coexisting COs and SC: For hole-type cuprates with PG above T_c, the primary CO gap (V_{CO}) is larger than Δ_{SC} and the corresponding COs are charge/pair-density waves with wave-vectors parallel to (π,0)/(0,π). For electron-type cuprates without PG above T_c, V_{CO} is smaller than Δ_{SC} and the CO wave-vector is along (π,π). This CO scenario may be extended to the ARPES data to consistently account for the presence (absence) of Fermi arcs in hole- (electron)-type cuprates. Fourier transformation of the vortex-state LDOS in Y-123 further reveals multiple sets of energy-independent wave-vectors due to field-enhanced pair- and spin-density waves. These results imply important interplay of SC with low-energy collective excitations.

Systematic Study on Fluorine-doping Dependence of Superconducting and Normal State Properties in LaFePO1-xFx

We have investigated the fluorine-doping dependence of lattice constants, transports and specific heat for polycrystalline LaFePO1-xFx. F doping slightly and monotonically decreases the in-plane lattice parameter. In the normal state, electrical resistivity at low temperature is proportional to the square of temperature and the electronic specific heat coefficient has large value, indicating the existence of moderate electron-electron correlation in this system. Hall coefficient has large magnitude, and shows large temperature dependence, indicating the low carrier density and multiple carriers in this system. Temperature dependence of the upper critical field suggests that the system is a two gap superconductor. The F-doping dependence of these properties in this system are very weak, while in the FeAs system (LaFeAsO), the F doping induces the large changes in electronic properties. This difference is probably due to the different F-doping dependence of the lattice in these two systems. It has been revealed that a pure effect of electron doping on electronic properties is very weak in this Fe pnictide compound.

Vortex glass scaling in Pb-doped Bi2223 single crystal

We report on study of the vortex liquid in Pb-doped Bi-2223 single crystal using the in-plane resistivity measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field up to 6T applied perpendicular to CuO planes. Below Tc at the upper part of superconducting transition we found Arrhenius-like resistivity behavior. With further temperature decrease close to resistivity onset resistivity shows power law dependence on temperature signaling approaching vortex-glass transition. The critical exponents nu(z-1)=4.6 plus-minus 0.5 are found to be field independent within experimental errors. We also present magnetic phase diagram defining region of nonzero critical current for Pb-doped Bi-2223 single crystal.

75As NQR/NMR Studies on Oxygen-deficient Iron-based Oxypnictide Superconductors LaFeAsO_{1-y} (y=0,0.25,0.4) and NdFeAsO_{0.6}

We report 75As-NQR/NMR studies on the oxygen-deficient iron(Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO_{0.6} (T_c=28 K) along with the results on LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO_{0.75}(T_c=20 K) and NdFeAsO_{0.6}(T_c=53 K). Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 of 75As NQR at zero field on LaFeAsO_{0.6} has revealed a T^3 dependence below T_c upon cooling without the coherence peak just below T_c, evidencing the unconventional superconducting state with the line-node gap. We have found an intimate relationship between the nuclear quadrupole frequencyof 75As and T_c for four samples used in this study. It implies microscopically that the local configuration of Fe and As atoms is significantly related to the T_c of the Fe-oxypnictide superconductors, namely, the T_c can be enhanced up to 50 K when the local configuration of Fe and As atoms is optimal, in which the band structure may be also optimized through the variation of hybridization between As 4p orbitals and Fe 3d orbitals.

Muon Spin Relaxation Studies of Magnetic-Field-Induced Effects in High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors

Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in high transverse magnetic fields ($\parallel \hat c$) revealed strong field-induced quasi-static magnetism in the underdoped and Eu doped (La,Sr)$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$, existing well above $T_{c}$ and $T_{N}$. The susceptibility-counterpart of Cu spin polarization, derived from the muon spin relaxation rate, exhibits a divergent behavior towards $T \sim 25$ K. No field-induced magnetism was detected in overdoped La$_{1.81}$Sr$_{0.19}$CuO$_{4}$, optimally doped Bi2212, and Zn-doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$.

In-plane optical conductivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$: Reduced superconducting condensate and residual Drude-like response

Temperature dependences of the optical spectra of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x$=0.12 and 0.15 were carefully examined for a polarization parallel to the CuO$_2$-plane over a wide frequency range down to 8 cm$^{-1}$. Selection of well-characterized crystals enabled us to measure purely in-plane polarized spectra without any additional peak. The weight of superconducting (SC) condensate estimated from the missing area in $σ_1(ω$) well agrees with the estimate from the slope of $σ_2(ω$) vs 1/$ω$ plot, showing no evidence that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum-rule is violated in the optical spectrum. We demonstrate that the optically estimated SC condensate is much smaller than the value obtained from the $μ$SR measurement of magnetic penetration depth. We also find an anomalous increase of conductivity in sub-millimeter region towards $ω$=0 below $T_c$, which suggests the microscopic inhomogeneity in the superconducting state. Both observations are discussed in relation with the inhomogeneous electronic state that might be inherent to high-$T_c$ cuprates.

Comment on ''Phase Diagram of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ Probed in the Infrared: Imprints of Charge Stripe Excitations''

Recently Lucarelli {\it et al.} have reported\cite{lucarelli} temperature-dependence of the in-plane optical reflectivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ over a wide doping range, focusing on the infrared peaks at 30 cm$^{-1}$ (for $x$=0.12), 250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$. They interpreted the first peak (30 cm$^{-1}$) as a signature of charge stripe ordering, while the latter two (250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$) are attributed to the polaronic charge excitations. However, careful readers would notice that the reported spectra are largely different from those so far measured on the same system. As we illustrate below, all these peaks are caused by an uncontrolled leakage of the c-axis reflectivity into the measured spectra.

Electronic structure of MgB$_2$ from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The first angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results from MgB$_2$ single crystals are reported. Close to the $Γ$K and $Γ$M directions, three distinct dispersions are observed approaching the Fermi energy, as can be assigned to the theoretically predicted $σ$ (B $2p_{x,y}$) and $π$ (B $2p_z$) bands. In addition, we also observed a small parabolic-like band centered around $Γ$, and attributed it to a surface-derived state. Good agreement between our results and the band calculations suggests that the electronic structure of MgB$_2$ is of a conventional nature, thus implying that electron correlations are weak, and may be of little importance to the superconductivity in this system.

Spatial homogeneity and doping dependence of quasiparticle tunneling spectra in cuprate superconductors

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) studies reveal long-range (~100 nm) spatial homogeneity in optimally and underdoped superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (YBCO) single crystals and thin films, and macroscopic spatial modulations in overdoped (Y_{0.7}Ca_{0.3})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (Ca-YBCO) epitaxial films. In contrast, STS on an optimally doped YBa_2(Cu_{0.9934}Zn_{0.0026}Mg_{0.004})_3O_{6.9} single crystal exhibits strong spatial modulations and suppression of superconductivity over a microscopic scale near the Zn or Mg impurity sites, and the global pairing potential is also reduced relative to that of optimally doped YBCO, suggesting strong pair-breaking effects of the non-magnetic impurities. The spectral characteristics are consistent with d_{x^2-y^2} pairing symmetry for the optimally and underdoped YBCO, and with (d_{x^2-y^2}+s) for the overdoped Ca-YBCO. The doping-dependent pairing symmetry suggests interesting changes in the superconducting ground state, and is consistent with the presence of nodal quasiparticles for all doping levels. The maximum energy gap Δ_d is non-monotonic with the doping level, while the (2Δ_d/k_BT_c) ratio increases with decreasing doping. The similarities and contrasts between the spectra of YBCO and of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x} (Bi-2212) are discussed.
