Emission of coherent THz magnons in an antiferromagnetic insulator triggered by ultrafast spin-phonon interactions

Antiferromagnetic materials have been proposed as new types of narrowband THz spintronic devices owing to their ultrafast spin dynamics. Manipulating coherently their spin dynamics, however, remains a key challenge that is envisioned to be accomplished by spin-orbit torques or direct optical excitations. Here, we demonstrate the combined generation of broadband THz (incoherent) magnons and narrowband (coherent) magnons at 1 THz in low damping thin films of NiO/Pt. We evidence, experimentally and through modelling, two excitation processes of magnetization dynamics in NiO, an off-resonant instantaneous optical spin torque and a strain-wave-induced THz torque induced by ultrafast Pt excitation. Both phenomena lead to the emission of a THz signal through the inverse spin Hall effect in the adjacent heavy metal layer. We unravel the characteristic timescales of the two excitation processes found to be < 50 fs and > 300 fs, respectively, and thus open new routes towards the development of fast opto-spintronic devices based on antiferromagnetic materials.

Extremely slow non-equilibrium monopole dynamics in classical spin ice

We report on the non-equilibrium monopole dynamics in the classical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ detected by means of high-resolution magnetostriction measurements. Significant lattice changes occur at the transition from the kagome-ice to the saturated-ice phase, visible in the longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction. A hysteresis opening at temperatures below 0.6 K suggests a first-order transition between the kagome and saturated state. Extremely slow lattice relaxations, triggered by changes of the magnetic field, were observed. These lattice-relaxation effects result from non-equilibrium monopole formation or annihilation processes. The relaxation times extracted from our experiment are in good agreement with theoretical predictions with decay constants of the order of $10{^4}$ s at 0.3 K.

Angle-Dependent Spin-Wave Resonance Spectroscopy of (Ga,Mn)As Films

A modeling approach for standing spin-wave resonances based on a finite-difference formulation of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is presented. In contrast to a previous study [Bihler et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 045205 (2009)], this formalism accounts for elliptical magnetization precession and magnetic properties arbitrarily varying across the layer thickness, including the magnetic anisotropy parameters, the exchange stiffness, the Gilbert damping, and the saturation magnetization. To demonstrate the usefulness of our modeling approach, we experimentally study a set of (Ga,Mn)As samples grown by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy by means of electrochemical capacitance-voltage measurements and angle-dependent standing spin-wave resonance spectroscopy. By applying our modeling approach, the angle dependence of the spin-wave resonance data can be reproduced in a simulation with one set of simulation parameters for all external field orientations. We find that the approximately linear gradient in the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy is related to a linear gradient in the hole concentrations of the samples.

Converse Magnetoelectric Effects in Fe3O4/BaTiO3 Multiferroic Hybrids

The quantitative understanding of converse magnetoelectric effects, i.e., the variation of the magnetization as a function of an applied electric field, in extrinsic multiferroic hybrids is a key prerequisite for the development of future spintronic devices. We present a detailed study of the strain-mediated converse magnetoelectric effect in ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 thin films on ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrates at room temperature. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulation based on a two-region model. This demonstrates that the electric field induced changes of the magnetic state in the Fe3O4 thin film can be well described by the presence of two different ferroelastic domains in the BaTiO3 substrate, resulting in two differently strained regions in the Fe3O4 film with different magnetic properties. The two-region model allows to predict the converse magnetoelectric effects in multiferroic hybrid structures consisting of ferromagnetic thin films on ferroelastic substrates.

Spin Hall Magnetoresistance Induced by a Non-Equilibrium Proximity Effect

We report anisotropic magnetoresistance in Pt|Y3Fe5O12 bilayers. In spite of Y3Fe5O12 being a very good electrical insulator, the resistance of the Pt layer reflects its magnetization direction. The effect persists even when a Cu layer is inserted between Pt and Y3Fe5O12, excluding the contribution of induced equilibrium magnetization at the interface. Instead, we show that the effect originates from concerted actions of the direct and inverse spin Hall effects and therefore call it "spin Hall magnetoresistance."

Spin pumping with coherent elastic waves

We show that the resonant coupling of phonons and magnons can be exploited to generate spin currents at room temperature. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) pulses with a frequency of 1.55 GHz and duration of 300 ns provide coherent elastic waves in a ferromagnetic thin film/normal metal (Co/Pt) bilayer. We use the inverse spin Hall voltage in the Pt as a measure for the spin current and record its evolution as a function of time and external magnetic field magnitude and orientation. Our experiments show that a spin current is generated in the exclusive presence of a resonant elastic excitation. This establishes acoustic spin pumping as a resonant analogue to the spin Seebeck effect.

Surface Acoustic Wave-Driven Ferromagnetic Resonance in Nickel Thin Films: Theory and Experiment

We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study of surface acoustic wave-driven ferromagnetic resonance. In a first modeling approach based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we derive expressions for the magnetization dynamics upon magnetoelastic driving that are used to calculate the absorbed microwave power upon magnetic resonance as well as the spin current density generated by the precessing magnetization in the vicinity of a ferromagnet/normal metal interface. In a second modeling approach, we deal with the backaction of the magnetization dynamics on the elastic wave by solving the elastic wave equation and the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation selfconsistently, obtaining analytical solutions for the acoustic wave phase shift and attenuation. We compare both modeling approaches with the complex forward transmission of a LiNbO$_3$/Ni surface acoustic wave hybrid device recorded experimentally as a function of the external magnetic field orientation and magnitude, rotating the field within three different planes and employing three different surface acoustic wave frequencies. We find quantitative agreement of the experimentally observed power absorption and surface acoustic wave phase shift with our modeling predictions using one set of parameters for all field configurations and frequencies.

Magneto-optical imaging of voltage-controlled magnetization reorientation

We study the validity and limitations of a macrospin model to describe the voltage-controlled manipulation of ferromagnetic magnetization in nickel thin film/piezoelectric actuator hybrid structures. To this end, we correlate simultaneously measured spatially resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect imaging and integral magnetotransport measurements at room temperature. Our results show that a macrospin approach is adequate to model the magnetoresistance as a function of the voltage applied to the hybrid, except for a narrow region around the coercive field - where the magnetization reorientation evolves via domain effects. Thus, on length scales much larger than the typical magnetic domain size, the voltage control of magnetization is well reproduced by a simple Stoner-Wohlfarth type macrospin model.

Scaling behavior of the spin pumping effect in ferromagnet/platinum bilayers

We systematically measured the DC voltage V_ISH induced by spin pumping together with the inverse spin Hall effect in ferromagnet/platinum bilayer films. In all our samples, comprising ferromagnetic 3d transition metals, Heusler compounds, ferrite spinel oxides, and magnetic semiconductors, V_ISH invariably has the same polarity. V_ISH furthermore scales with the magnetization precession cone angle with a universal prefactor, irrespective of the magnetic properties, the charge carrier transport mechanism or type. These findings quantitatively corroborate the present theoretical understanding of spin pumping in combination with the inverse spin Hall effect.

Epitaxial growth and magnetic properties of Sr2CrReO6 thin films

The double perovskite Sr2CrReO6 is an interesting material for spintronics, showing ferrimagnetism up to 635 K with a predicted high spin polarization of about 86%. We fabricated Sr2CrReO6 epitaxial films by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Phase-pure films with optimum crystallographic and magnetic properties were obtained by growing at a substrate temperature of 700 degree C in pure O2 of 6.6x10-4 mbar. The films are c-axis oriented, coherently strained, and show less than 20% anti-site defects. The magnetization curves reveal high saturation magnetization of 0.8 muB per formula unit and high coercivity of 1.1 T, as well as a strong magnetic anisotropy.

Giant magnetic anisotropy changes in Sr2CrReO6 thin films on BaTiO3

The integration of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials into hybrid heterostructures yields multifunctional systems with improved or novel functionality. We here report on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic double perovskite Sr2CrReO6, grown as epitaxial thin film onto ferroelectric BaTiO3. As a function of temperature, the crystal-structure of BaTiO3 undergoes phase transitions, which induce qualitative changes in the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnet. We observe abrupt changes in the coercive field of up to 1.2T along with resistance changes of up to 6.5%. These results are attributed to the high sensitivity of the double perovskites to mechanical deformation.

Magnetic interference patterns in 0-Pi SIFS Josephson junctions: effects of asymmetry between 0 and Pi regions

We present a detailed analysis of the dependence of the critical current I_c on the magnetic field B of 0, Pi, and 0-Pi superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions. I_c(B) of the 0 and Pi junction closely follows a Fraunhofer pattern, indicating a homogeneous critical current density j_c(x). The maximum of I_c(B) is slightly shifted along the field axis, pointing to a small remanent in-plane magnetization of the F-layer along the field axis. I_c(B) of the 0-Pi junction exhibits the characteristic central minimum. I_c however has a finite value here, due to an asymmetry of j_c in the 0 and Pi part. In addition, this I_c(B) exhibits asymmetric maxima and bumped minima. To explain these features in detail, flux penetration being different in the 0 part and the Pi part needs to be taken into account. We discuss this asymmetry in relation to the magnetic properties of the F-layer and the fabrication technique used to produce the 0-Pi junctions.
