First application of mass measurement with the Rare-RI Ring reveals the solar r-process abundance trend at A=122 and A=123

The Rare-RI Ring (R3) is a recently commissioned cyclotron-like storage ring mass spectrometer dedicated to mass measurements of exotic nuclei far from stability at Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) in RIKEN. The first application of mass measurement using the R3 mass spectrometer at RIBF is reported. Rare isotopes produced at RIBF, $^{127}$Sn, $^{126}$In, $^{125}$Cd, $^{124}$Ag, $^{123}$Pd, were injected in R3. Masses of $^{126}$In, $^{125}$Cd, and $^{123}$Pd were measured whereby the mass uncertainty of $^{123}$Pd was improved. This is the first reported measurement with a new storage ring mass spectrometery technique realized at a heavy-ion cyclotron and employing individual injection of the pre-identified rare nuclei. The latter is essential for the future mass measurements of the rarest isotopes produced at RIBF. The impact of the new $^{123}$Pd result on the solar $r$-process abundances in a neutron star merger event is investigated by performing reaction network calculations of 20 trajectories with varying electron fraction $Y_e$. It is found that the neutron capture cross section on $^{123}$Pd increases by a factor of 2.2 and $β$-delayed neutron emission probability, $P_\mathrm{1n}$, of $^{123}$Rh increases by 14\%. The neutron capture cross section on $^{122}$Pd decreases by a factor of 2.6 leading to pileup of material at $A=122$, thus reproducing the trend of the solar $r$-process abundances. The trend of the two-neutron separation energies (S$_\mathrm{2n}$) was investigated for the Pd isotopic chain. The new mass measurement with improved uncertainty excludes large changes of the S$_\mathrm{2n}$ value at $N=77$. Such large increase of the S$_\mathrm{2n}$ values before $N=82$ was proposed as an alternative to the quenching of the $N=82$ shell gap to reproduce $r$-process abundances in the mass region of $A=112-124$.

Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Pre-Supernova Alert System for Super-Kamiokande

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground state in CePtSi2

CePtSi2 was reported to exhibit an antiferromagnetic order below T*=1.8 K at ambient pressure, a valence state change at ~1.2 GPa, and superconductivity in the range between 1.4 and 2.1 GPa with the maximum transition temperature of 0.14 K [T. Nakano et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 172507 (2009)]. We have performed polycrystalline and single crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic structure under ambient and high pressures. We found that incommensurate magnetic peaks with the magnetic propagation vector of (0.32, 0, 0.11) at ambient pressure below T_{SDW}~1.25 K. Those magnetic peaks which originate from a spin-density-wave order with the easy axis along the c axis and an averaged ordered moment of 0.45(5) mu_B, suggesting that there may be an intermediate phase between T* and T_{SDW}. Applying pressures, the magnetic propagation vector shows no change and the magnetic order disappears around 1.0 GPa, which is much lower than the critical pressure for the superconducting phase. The results suggest that other than magnetic fluctuations may play a primary role in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Search for proton decay via $p\rightarrow μ^+K^0$ in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for proton decay via $p\toμ^+K^0$ in 0.37\,Mton$\cdot$years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for $K^0_S$ and $K^0_L$ channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2\,Mton$\cdot$years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of $3.6\times10^{33}$ years on the proton lifetime.

Charge-changing cross sections for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca and effect of charged-particle evaporation induced by neutron removal reaction

Charge-changing cross sections $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values on $^{12}$C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed model systematically reproduces $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ data without phenomenological corrections, and can also explain experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values obtained in other energy regions.

SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline: A facility to produce a multi-GeV photon beam via laser Compton scattering

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

$J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ production at forward rapidity in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the differential cross section, mean transverse momentum, mean transverse momentum squared of inclusive $J/ψ$ and cross-section ratio of $ψ(2S)$ to $J/ψ$ at forward rapidity in \pp collisions at \sqrts = 510 GeV via the dimuon decay channel. Comparison is made to inclusive $J/ψ$ cross sections measured at \sqrts = 200 GeV and 2.76--13 TeV. The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-$x$ gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum ($p_T$) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the $p_T$ range. These calculations overestimate the data at low $p_T$. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above $\approx3$ GeV/$c$, the calculations are systematically below the data. The total cross section times the branching ratio is BR $dσ^{J/ψ}_{pp}/dy (1.2<|y|<2.2, 0<p_T<10~\mbox{GeV/$c$}) =$ 54.3 $\pm$ 0.5 (stat) $\pm$ 5.5 (syst) nb.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ at forward and backward rapidity in $p$+$p$, $p$$+A$l, $p$$+A$u, and $^3$He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}$

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of $J/ψ$ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au, at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable $R_{AB}$, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the $J/ψ$ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on $J/ψ$ production with different projectile sizes $p$ and $^3$He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for $p$$+$Au and $^{3}$He$+$Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for $^{3}$He$+$Au is found to be smaller than that for $p$$+$Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of $0.89\pm0.03$(stat)${\pm}0.08$(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Measurement of charged pion double spin asymmetries at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries, $A_{LL}$, for charged pions at midrapidity ($|η|<0.35$) in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction $x$ range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in $p$$+$Al and $p$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in $p$$+$Al and $p$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity ($1.4<η<2.4$, $p$-going direction) and backward rapidity ($-2.2<η<-1.2$, $A$-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central $p$$+$Al and $p$$+$Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in $p$+$p$ collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in $p$$+$Au collisions than in $p$$+$Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Search for $η'$ bound nuclei in the $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p)$ reaction with simultaneous detection of decay products

We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $η'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($η+p$) pair associated with the $η'N\toηN$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle $\cosθ^{ηp}_{lab}<-0.9$ was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90$\%$ confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree $η'$ production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the $η'N\toηN$ process and/or a shallow $η'$-nucleus potential.

Search for the Decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.

The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment -- Snowmass LOI

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leading roles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

Swelling of doubly magic $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$

Interaction cross sections for $^{42\textrm{-}51}$Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number $N=28$. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and the Mean-Field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond $N=28$ results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$.

Angular analysis of $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$

We present a measurement of angular observables, $P_4'$, $P_5'$, $P_6'$, $P_8'$, in the decay $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$, where $\ell^+\ell^-$ is either $e^+e^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ containing $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider KEKB. Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in the $D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed asymmetry is $$ A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of Michel Parameters ($\barη$, $ξκ$) in the radiative leptonic decay of tau at Belle

The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of $e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-\rightarrow (π^+π^0 \barν)(l^-ν\barνγ)$ $(l=e$ or $μ)$. The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are $\barη = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8$ and $ξκ= 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

We report the first measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\barν_{\ell}})$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Measurement of the branching ratio of $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} τ^- \barν_τ$ relative to $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ decays with a semileptonic tagging method

We select a sample of $B^0 \bar{B}^0$ pairs by reconstructing both $B$ mesons in semileptonic decays to $D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}$. We measure ${\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}$, which is within $1.6 σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where $σ$ is the standard deviation including systematic uncertainties.

Observation of Transverse $Λ/\barΛ$ Hyperon Polarization in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Structure near $K^-$+$p$+$p$ threshold in the in-flight $^3$He$(K^-,Λp)n$ reaction

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $Λp$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $Λpn$ final state. The observed $Λp n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $Λp$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $χ^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $Γ_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5

The results are based on a $121.4$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the $Υ(10860)$ peak and $16.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

Measurement of the strong interaction induced shift and width of the 1s state of kaonic deuterium at J-PARC

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $ΛN$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{Λ}$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

Photon-Veto Counters at the Outer Edge of the Endcap Calorimeter for the KOTO Experiment

The Outer-Edge Veto (OEV) counter subsystem for extra-photon detection from the backgrounds for the? $K^0_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$ decay is located at the outer edge of the endcap CsI calorimeter of the KOTO experiment at J-PARC. The subsystem is composed of 44 counters with different cross-sectional shapes. All counters are made of lead and scintillator plates and read out through wavelength-shifting fibers. In this paper, we discuss the design and performances of the OEV counters under heavy load ($\sim8$ tons/m$^2$) in vacuum. For 1-MeV energy deposit, the average light yield and time resolution are 20.9 photo-electrons and 1.5 ns, respectively. Although no pronounced peak by minimum-ionizing particles is observed in the energy distributions, an energy calibration method with cosmic rays works well in monitoring the gain stability with an accuracy of a few percent.

High-resolution search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via a pion-induced reaction at J-PARC

The pentaquark $Θ^+$ has been searched for via the $π^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 $μ$b/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/$c$ data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $Θ^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays with the semileptonic tagging method and the full Belle data sample

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We reconstruct the accompanying $B$ meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}$. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Decay and Frequency Shift of Inter and Intravalley Phonons in Graphene -Dirac Cone Migration-

By considering analytical expressions for the self-energies of intervalley and intravalley phonons in graphene, we describe the behavior of D, 2D, and D$'$ Raman bands with changes in doping ($μ$) and light excitation energy ($E_L$). Comparing the self-energy with the observed $μ$ dependence of the 2D bandwidth, we estimate the wavevector $q$ of the constituent intervalley phonon at $\hbar vq\simeq E_L/1.6$ ($v$ is electron's Fermi velocity) and conclude that the self-energy makes a major contribution (60%) to the dispersive behavior of the D and 2D bands. The estimation of $q$ is based on an image of shifted Dirac cones in which the resonance decay of a phonon satisfying $q > ω/v$ ($ω$ is the phonon frequency) into an electron-hole pair is suppressed when $μ< (vq-ω)/2$. We highlight the fact that the decay of an intervalley (and intravalley longitudinal optical) phonon with $q=ω/v$ is strongly suppressed by electron-phonon coupling at an arbitrary $μ$. This feature is in contrast to the divergent behavior of an intravalley transverse optical phonon, which bears a close similarity to the polarization function relevant to plasmons.

MICE: the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment. Step I: First Measurement of Emittance with Particle Physics Detectors

The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) is a strategic R&D project intended to demonstrate the only practical solution to providing high brilliance beams necessary for a neutrino factory or muon collider. MICE is under development at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the United Kingdom. It comprises a dedicated beamline to generate a range of input muon emittances and momenta, with time-of-flight and Cherenkov detectors to ensure a pure muon beam. The emittance of the incoming beam will be measured in the upstream magnetic spectrometer with a scintillating fiber tracker. A cooling cell will then follow, alternating energy loss in Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) absorbers to RF cavity acceleration. A second spectrometer, identical to the first, and a second muon identification system will measure the outgoing emittance. In the 2010 run at RAL the muon beamline and most detectors were fully commissioned and a first measurement of the emittance of the muon beam with particle physics (time-of-flight) detectors was performed. The analysis of these data was recently completed and is discussed in this paper. Future steps for MICE, where beam emittance and emittance reduction (cooling) are to be measured with greater accuracy, are also presented.

Search for correlations of the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic ray with extragalactic objects as observed by the telescope array experiment

We search for correlations between positions of extragalactic objects and arrival directions of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) with primary energy $E \ge 40$ EeV as observed by the surface detector array of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment during the first 40 months of operation. We examined several public astronomical object catalogs, including the Veron-Cetty and Veron catalog of active galactic nuclei. We counted the number of TA events correlated with objects in each catalog as a function of three parameters: the maximum angular separation between a TA event and an object, the minimum energy of the events, and the maximum redshift of the objects. We determine combinations of these parameters which maximize the correlations, and calculate the chance probabilities of having the same levels of correlations from an isotropic distribution of UHECR arrival directions. No statistically significant correlations are found when penalties for scanning over the above parameters and for searching in several catalogs are taken into account.

The Cosmic Ray Energy Spectrum Observed with the Surface Detector of the Telescope Array Experiment

The Telescope Array (TA) collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with primary energies above 1.6 x 10^(18) eV. This measurement is based upon four years of observation by the surface detector component of TA. The spectrum shows a dip at an energy of 4.6 x 10^(18) eV and a steepening at 5.4 x 10^(19) eV which is consistent with the expectation from the GZK cutoff. We present the results of a technique, new to the analysis of ultra-high energy cosmic ray surface detector data, that involves generating a complete simulation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays striking the TA surface detector. The procedure starts with shower simulations using the CORSIKA Monte Carlo program where we have solved the problems caused by use of the "thinning" approximation. This simulation method allows us to make an accurate calculation of the acceptance of the detector for the energies concerned.

The Energy Spectrum of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Measured by the Telescope Array FADC Fluorescence Detectors in Monocular Mode

We present a measurement of the energy spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays performed by the Telescope Array experiment using monocular observations from its two new FADC-based fluorescence detectors. After a short description of the experiment, we describe the data analysis and event reconstruction procedures. Since the aperture of the experiment must be calculated by Monte Carlo simulation, we describe this calculation and the comparisons of simulated and real data used to verify the validity of the aperture calculation. Finally, we present the energy spectrum calculated from the merged monocular data sets of the two FADC-based detectors, and also the combination of this merged spectrum with an independent, previously published monocular spectrum measurement performed by Telescope Array's third fluorescence detector (Abu-Zayyad {\it et al.}, {Astropart. Development of liquid helium-3 target for experimental studies of antikaon-nucleon interaction at J-PARC

A liquid helium-3 target system was developed for experimental studies of kaonic atoms and kaonic nuclei at J-PARC. helium-3 gas is liquefied in a heat exchanger cooled below 3.2 K by decompression of liquid helium-4. To maintain a large acceptance of the cylindrical detector system for decay particles of kaonic nuclei, efficient heat transport between the separate target cell and the main unit is realized using circulation of liquid helium-3. To minimize the amount of material, a vacuum vessel containing a carbon fiber reinforced plastic cylinder having an inside diameter of 150 mm and a thickness of 1 mm was produced. A target cell made of pure beryllium and beryllium-aluminum alloy was developed not only to minimize the amount of material but to obtain also high x-ray transmission. During a cooling test, the target cell was kept at 1.3 K at a pressure of 33 mbar. The total estimated heat load to the components including the target cell and heat exchanger cooled by liquid helium-4 decompression, was 0.21 W, and the liquid helium-4 consumption rate was 50 L/day.

Pseudospin for Raman D Band in Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons

By analytically constructing the matrix elements of an electron-phonon interaction for the $D$ band in the Raman spectra of armchair graphene nanoribbons, we show that pseudospin and momentum conservation result in (i) a $D$ band consisting of two components, (ii) a $D$ band Raman intensity that is enhanced only when the polarizations of the incident and scattered light are parallel to the armchair edge, and (iii) the $D$ band softening/hardening behavior caused by the Kohn anomaly effect is correlated with that of the $G$ band. Several experiments are mentioned that are relevant to these results. It is also suggested that pseudospin is independent of the boundary condition for the phonon mode, while momentum conservation depends on it.

Search for Anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with the Telescope Array Experiment

We study the anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) events collected by the Telescope Array (TA) detector in the first 40 months of operation. Following earlier studies, we examine event sets with energy thresholds of 10 EeV, 40 EeV, and 57 EeV. We find that the distributions of the events in right ascension and declination are compatible with an isotropic distribution in all three sets. We then compare with previously reported clustering of the UHECR events at small angular scales. No significant clustering is found in the TA data. We then check the events with E>57 EeV for correlations with nearby active galactic nuclei. No significant correlation is found. Finally, we examine all three sets for correlations with the large-scale structure of the Universe. We find that the two higher-energy sets are compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the hypothesis that UHECR sources follow the matter distribution of the Universe (the LSS hypothesis), while the event set with E>10 EeV is compatible with isotropy and is not compatible with the LSS hypothesis at 95% CL unless large deflection angles are also assumed. We show that accounting for UHECR deflections in a realistic model of the Galactic magnetic field can make this set compatible with the LSS hypothesis.

The Energy Spectrum of Telescope Array's Middle Drum Detector and the Direct Comparison to the High Resolution Fly's Eye Experiment

The Telescope Array's Middle Drum fluorescence detector was instrumented with telescopes refurbished from the High Resolution Fly's Eye's HiRes-1 site. The data observed by Middle Drum in monocular mode was analyzed via the HiRes-1 profile-constrained geometry reconstruction technique and utilized the same calibration techniques enabling a direct comparison of the energy spectra and energy scales between the two experiments. The spectrum measured using the Middle Drum telescopes is based on a three-year exposure collected between December 16, 2007 and December 16, 2010. The calculated difference between the spectrum of the Middle Drum observations and the published spectrum obtained by the data collected by the HiRes-1 site allows the HiRes-1 energy scale to be transferred to Middle Drum. New air fluorescence detectors employed in the Telescope Array experiment

Since 2007, the Telescope Array (TA) experiment, based in Utah, USA, has been observing ultra high energy cosmic rays to understand their origins. The experiment involves a surface detector (SD) array and three fluorescence detector (FD) stations. FD stations, installed surrounding the SD array, measure the air fluorescence light emitted from extensive air showers (EASs) for precise determination of their energies and species. The detectors employed at one of the three FD stations were relocated from the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment. At the other two stations, newly designed detectors were constructed for the TA experiment. An FD consists of a primary mirror and a camera equipped with photomultiplier tubes. To obtain the EAS parameters with high accuracies, understanding the FD optical characteristics is important. In this paper, we report the characteristics and installation of new FDs and the performances of the FD components. The results of the monitored mirror reflectance during the observation time are also described in this report.

Applying the recently-developed continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we compute the magnetization and susceptibility down to extremely low temperatures while changing the magnitude of both transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields. Several characteristic behaviors are observed, which were not inferred from the previously studied quantum order from disorder at zero temperature, such as a horizontal-type stripe ordering at a substantial longitudinal field and a persistent critical behavior down to low temperature in a weak longitudinal field region.

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

Slow quench dynamics of the Kitaev model: anisotropic critical point and effect of disorder

We study the non-equilibrium slow dynamics for the Kitaev model both in the presence and the absence of disorder. For the case without disorder, we demonstrate, via an exact solution, that the model provides an example of a system with an anisotropic critical point and exhibits unusual scaling of defect density $n$ and residual energy $Q$ for a slow linear quench. We provide a general expression for the scaling of $n$ ($Q$) generated during a slow power-law dynamics, characterized by a rate $τ^{-1}$ and exponent $α$, from a gapped phase to an anisotropic quantum critical point in $d$ dimensions, for which the energy gap $Δ_{\vec k} \sim k_i^z$ for $m$ momentum components ($i=1..m$) and $\sim k_i^{z'}$ for the rest $d-m$ components ($i=m+1..d$) with $z\le z'$: $n \sim τ^{-[m + (d-m)z/z']να/(zνα+1)}$ ($Q \sim τ^{-[(m+z)+ (d-m)z/z']να/(zνα+1)}$). These general expressions reproduce both the corresponding results for the Kitaev model as a special case for $d=z'=2$ and $m=z=ν=1$ and the well-known scaling laws of $n$ and $Q$ for isotropic critical points for $z=z'$. We also present an exact computation of all non-zero, independent, multispin correlation functions of the Kitaev model for such a quench and discuss their spatial dependence. For the disordered Kitaev model, where the disorder is introduced via random choice of the link variables $D_n$ in the model's Fermionic representation, we find that $n \sim τ^{-1/2}$ and $Q\sim τ^{-1}$ ($Q\sim τ^{-1/2}$) for a slow linear quench ending in the gapless (gapped) phase. We provide a qualitative explanation of such scaling.

Three- and four-nucleon absorption processes observed in the $K^-$-$^4$He reaction at rest

Correlations of back-to-back coincident $Λd$ and $Λt$ pairs from the stopped $K^-$ reaction on $^4$He had been investigated, thereby $Λd$ and $Λt$ branches of non-mesonic three- and four-nucleon absorption processes of antikaon at rest were identified as well-separable processes, respectively. The branching ratio of the three-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λd "n"$, is estimated to be $(0.9 \pm 0.1 (stat) \pm 0.2 (syst)) \times 10^{-3}$ from the normalized $Λd$ spectrum in a $Λd n$ final state, while the fraction of the four-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λt$, is obtained to be $(3.1 \pm 0.4 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst)) \times 10^{-4}$ per stopped $K^-$.

Doping dependence of Normal-state Property in the Iron-based Oxypnictide Superconductors LaFeAsO1-y probed by 57Fe-NMR and 75As-NMR/NQR

We report systematic 57Fe-NMR and 75As-NMR/NQR studies on an underdoped sample (T_c=20 K), an optimally doped sample (T_c=28 K), and an overdoped sample (T_c=22 K) of oxygen-deficient iron (Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-y}$. A microscopic phase separation between superconducting domains and magnetic domains is shown to take place in the underdoped sample, indicating a local inhomogeneity in association with the density distribution of oxygen deficiencies. As a result, 1/T_1T in the normal state of the superconducting domain decreases significantly upon cooling at both the Fe and As sites regardless of the electron-doping level in LaFeAsO_{1-y}. On the basis of this result, we claim that $1/T_1T$ is not always enhanced by antiferromagnetic fluctuations close to an antiferromagnetic phase in the underdoped superconducting sample. This contrasts with the behavior in hole-doped Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe2As2(T_c= 38 K), which exhibits a significant increase in $1/T_1T$ upon cooling. We remark that the crucial difference between the normal-state properties of LaFeAsO_{1-y} and Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe2As2 originates from the fact that the relevant Fermi surface topologies are differently modified depending on whether electrons or holes are doped into the FeAs layers.

Search for a light pseudoscalar particle in the decay $K^0_L \to π^0 π^0 X$

We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle $X$ in the decay $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->γγ$ with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/$c^2$ was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for $X$ and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->γγ$ of $2.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of $X$ from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/$c^2$ are also presented.

Self-shielding effect of a single phase liquid xenon detector for direct dark matter search

Liquid xenon is a suitable material for a dark matter search. For future large scale experiments, single phase detectors are attractive due to their simple configuration and scalability. However, in order to reduce backgrounds, they need to fully rely on liquid xenon's self-shielding property. A prototype detector was developed at Kamioka Observatory to establish vertex and energy reconstruction methods and to demonstrate the self-shielding power against gamma rays from outside of the detector. Sufficient self-shielding power for future experiments was obtained.

Systematic Study on Fluorine-doping Dependence of Superconducting and Normal State Properties in LaFePO1-xFx

We have investigated the fluorine-doping dependence of lattice constants, transports and specific heat for polycrystalline LaFePO1-xFx. F doping slightly and monotonically decreases the in-plane lattice parameter. In the normal state, electrical resistivity at low temperature is proportional to the square of temperature and the electronic specific heat coefficient has large value, indicating the existence of moderate electron-electron correlation in this system. Hall coefficient has large magnitude, and shows large temperature dependence, indicating the low carrier density and multiple carriers in this system. Temperature dependence of the upper critical field suggests that the system is a two gap superconductor. The F-doping dependence of these properties in this system are very weak, while in the FeAs system (LaFeAsO), the F doping induces the large changes in electronic properties. This difference is probably due to the different F-doping dependence of the lattice in these two systems. It has been revealed that a pure effect of electron doping on electronic properties is very weak in this Fe pnictide compound.

75As NQR/NMR Studies on Oxygen-deficient Iron-based Oxypnictide Superconductors LaFeAsO_{1-y} (y=0,0.25,0.4) and NdFeAsO_{0.6}

We report 75As-NQR/NMR studies on the oxygen-deficient iron(Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO_{0.6} (T_c=28 K) along with the results on LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO_{0.75}(T_c=20 K) and NdFeAsO_{0.6}(T_c=53 K). Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 of 75As NQR at zero field on LaFeAsO_{0.6} has revealed a T^3 dependence below T_c upon cooling without the coherence peak just below T_c, evidencing the unconventional superconducting state with the line-node gap. We have found an intimate relationship between the nuclear quadrupole frequencyof 75As and T_c for four samples used in this study. It implies microscopically that the local configuration of Fe and As atoms is significantly related to the T_c of the Fe-oxypnictide superconductors, namely, the T_c can be enhanced up to 50 K when the local configuration of Fe and As atoms is optimal, in which the band structure may be also optimized through the variation of hybridization between As 4p orbitals and Fe 3d orbitals.

Liquid Xe scintillation calorimetry and Xe optical properties

The optical properties of LXe in the vacuum ultra violet (VUV), determining the performance of a scintillation calorimeter, are discussed in detail. The available data, measured in a wider spectral region from visible to UV light, and in a large range of Xe densities, from gas to liquid, are examined. It is shown that this information can be used for deriving the LXe optical properties in the VUV. A comparison is made with the few direct measurements in LXe for VUV light resulting from the LXe excitation by ionizing particles. A useful relation is obtained which connects the Rayleigh scattering length to the refractive index in LXe.

Metal Rich Plasma at the Center Portion of the Cygnus Loop

We observed the center portion of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant with the ASCA observatory. The X-ray spectrum of the center portion was significantly different from that obtained at the North-East (NE) limb. The emission lines from Si and S were quite strong while those of O and the continuum emission were similar to those obtained at the NE limb. Based on the spectral analysis, Si and S emission lines originated from a high-kTe and low ionization plasma whereas O and most of the continuum emission arose from a low-kTe and high ionization plasma. We suppose that Si and S emitting gas are present at the interior of the Loop while O lines and continuum emission mainly arise from the shell region. Therefore, we subtracted the spectrum of the NE limb from that of the center. Obtained abundances of Si, S, and Fe were 4 $\pm$ 1, 6 $\pm$ 2, and ${1.3}^{+0.6}_{-0.3}$ times higher than those of the cosmic abundances, respectively, and are $\sim$40 times richer than those obtained at the NE limb. These facts strongly support that some of the crude ejecta must be left at the center portion of the Cygnus Loop. The low abundance of Fe relative to Si and S suggests a type II SN with a massive progenitor star as the origin of the Cygnus Loop.
