In-plane quasi-single-domain BaTiO3_3 via interfacial symmetry engineering

The control of the in-plane domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films is not only critical to understanding ferroelectric phenomena but also to enabling functional device fabrication. However, in-plane polarized ferroelectric thin films typically exhibit complicated multi-domain states, not desirable for optoelectronic device performance. Here we report a strategy combining interfacial symmetry engineering and anisotropic strain to design single-domain, in-plane polarized ferroelectric BaTiO3_3 thin films. Theoretical calculations predict the key role of the BaTiO3_3 / PrScO3_3 (110)O_O substrate interfacial environment, where anisotropic strain, monoclinic distortions, and interfacial electrostatic potential stabilize a single-variant spontaneous polarization. A combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements, and second harmonic generation measurements directly reveals the stabilization of the in-plane quasi-single-domain polarization state. This work offers design principles for engineering in-plane domains of ferroelectric oxide thin films, which is a prerequisite for high performance optoelectronic devices.

Angular analysis of B0→K∗(892)0ℓ+ℓ−B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-

We present a measurement of angular observables, P4′P_4', P5′P_5', P6′P_6', P8′P_8', in the decay B0→K∗(892)0ℓ+ℓ−B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-, where ℓ+ℓ−\ell^+\ell^- is either e+e−e^+e^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^-. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb−1711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1} containing 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar B pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider KEKB. Four angular observables, P4,5,6,8′P_{4,5,6,8}' are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, q2q^2. We compare our results for P4,5,6,8′P_{4,5,6,8}' with Standard Model predictions including the q2q^2 region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called P5′P_5' anomaly.

Evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0}\to ηη

We report a search for B0→ηηB^{0}\to ηη with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 698 fb−1698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1} containing 753×106753 \times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0→ηη)=(7.6−2.3−1.6+2.7+1.4)×10−7\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to ηη) = (7.6^{+2.7 +1.4}_{-2.3 -1.6}) \times 10^{-7} at the level of 3.3 standard deviations above zero, which provides the first evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0} \to ηη.

Measurement of CPCP asymmetry in the D0→KS0KS0D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S using 921~fb−1^{-1} data collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The observed asymmetry is ACP(D0→KS0KS0)=(−0.02±1.53±0.17)%, A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of e+e−→π+π−ψ(2S)e^+e^- \to π^+π^-ψ(2S) via Initial State Radiation at Belle

We report measurement of the cross section of e+e−→π+π−ψ(2S)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ(2S) between 4.0 and 5.5GeV5.5 {\rm GeV}, based on an analysis of initial state radiation events in a 980fb−1980 \rm fb^{-1} data sample recorded with the Belle detector. The properties of the Y(4360)Y(4360) and Y(4660)Y(4660) states are determined. Fitting the mass spectrum of π+π−ψ(2S)π^+π^-ψ(2S) with two coherent Breit-Wigner functions, we find two solutions with identical mass and width but different couplings to electron-positron pairs: MY(4360)=(4347±6±3)MeV/c2M_{Y(4360)} = (4347\pm 6\pm 3) {\rm MeV}/c^2, ΓY(4360)=(103±9±5)MeVΓ_{Y(4360)} = (103\pm 9\pm 5) {\rm MeV}, MY(4660)=(4652±10±8)MeV/c2M_{Y(4660)} = (4652\pm10\pm 8) {\rm MeV}/c^2, ΓY(4660)=(68±11±1)MeVΓ_{Y(4660)} = (68\pm 11\pm 1) \rm MeV; and B[Y(4360)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4360)e+e−=(10.9±0.6±0.7)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (10.9\pm 0.6\pm 0.7) \rm eV and B[Y(4660)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4660)e+e−=(8.1±1.1±0.5)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (8.1\pm 1.1\pm 0.5) \rm eV for one solution; or B[Y(4360)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4360)e+e−=(9.2±0.6±0.6)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (9.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6) \rm eV and B[Y(4660)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4660)e+e−=(2.0±0.3±0.2)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (2.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.2) \rm eV for the other. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for a charged charmoniumlike structure at 4.05GeV/c24.05 {\rm GeV}/c^2 is observed in the π±ψ(2S)π^{\pm}ψ(2S) intermediate state in the Y(4360)Y(4360) decays.

Measurement of Michel Parameters (ηˉ\barη, ξκξκ) in the radiative leptonic decay of tau at Belle

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters ηˉ\barη and ξκξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the ττ lepton using 703 fb−1\mathrm{b}^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+e^- collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e+e−→τ+τ−→(π+π0νˉ)(l−ννˉγ)e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-\rightarrow (π^+π^0 \barν)(l^-ν\barνγ) (l=e(l=e or μ)μ). The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are ηˉ=−2.0±1.5±0.8\barη = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8 and ξκ=0.6±0.4±0.2ξκ= 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Observation of Transverse Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ Hyperon Polarization in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σˉ0Σ^0/\barΣ^0 and Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in e+e−e^+e^- at s=\sqrt{s}= 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons (e+e−→hhXe^+e^- \rightarrow hhX) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a 655 fb−1655\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton (e+e−→pXe^+e^- \rightarrow pX) cross sections are extracted from a 159 fb−1159\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sub-sample.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process e+e−→qqˉe^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function G1⊥G_1^\perp. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near s≈10.58\sqrt{s}\approx10.58 GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio rSr_S of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays. Using the full data sample of 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is rS<0.87r_S < 0.87 at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of rSr_S with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of rSr_S indicates the sensitivity of the decay to ϕ3ϕ_3 because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to 1/rS1/r_S. The rSr_S result is obtained from observables (x±x_\pm, y±y_\pm) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where x±=rScos⁡(δS±ϕ3)x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3), y±=rSsin⁡(δS±ϕ3)y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3) and ϕ3(δS)ϕ_3 (δ_S) are the weak (strong) phase difference between B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on cic_i and sis_i parameters measured by CLEO.

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau decays using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying B meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the recoiling B candidate in the decay channel B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau. We obtain a branching fraction of BR(B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau) = [1.25 +- 0.28 (stat.) +- 0.27 (syst.)] x 10^-4. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from the calculation based on the Standard Model.

Measurements of B→DˉDs0∗+(2317)B\rightarrow \bar{D} D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317) decay rates and a search for isospin partners of the Ds0∗+(2317)D_{s0}^{*+} (2317)

We report improved measurements of the product branching fractions B(B+→Dˉ0Ds0∗+(2317))×B(Ds0∗+(2317)→Ds+π0)=(8.0−1.2+1.3±1.1±0.4)×10−4{\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow\bar{D}^0 D_{s0}^{*+} (2317))\times{\mathcal B}( D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^0) =(8.0^{+1.3}_{-1.2} \pm 1.1 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4} and B(B0→D−Ds0∗+(2317))×B(Ds0∗+(2317)→Ds+π0)=(10.2−1.2+1.3±1.0±0.4)×10−4{\mathcal B}(B^0\rightarrow D^- D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317))\times{\mathcal B}(D_{s0}^{*+}(2317)\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^0) =(10.2^{+1.3}_{-1.2} \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}, where the first errors are statistical, the second are systematic and the third are from DD and DsD_s branching fractions. In addition, we report negative results from a search for hypothesized neutral (Z0Z^0) and doubly charged (Z++Z^{++}) isospin partners of the Ds0∗+(2317)D_{s0}^{*+}(2317) and provide upper limits on the product branching fractions B(B0→D0z0)×B(z0→Ds+π−){\mathcal B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 z^0)\times{\mathcal B}(z^0\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^-) and B(B+→D−z++)×B(z++→Ds+π+){\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow D^- z^{++})\times{\mathcal B}(z^{++}\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^+) that are more than an order of magnitude smaller than theoretical expectations for the hypotheses that the Ds0∗+(2317)D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317) is a member of an isospin triplet. The analysis uses a 711 fb−1^{-1} data sample containing 772 million BBˉB\bar{B} meson pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

Observation of B0→pΛˉD(∗)−B^{0} \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}

We report the first observation of the decays B0→pΛˉD(∗)−B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}. The data sample of 711711 fb−1^{-1} used in this analysis corresponds to 772772 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. We observe 19.8σ19.8σ and 10.8σ10.8σ excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of B0→pΛˉD−B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{-} and B0→pΛˉD∗−B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{*-} to be (25.1±2.6±3.5)×10−6(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6} and (33.6±6.3±4.4)×10−6(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon (pΛˉp\barΛ) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar BB decays.

Search for B+→e+νB^+ \to e^+ ν and B+→μ+νB^+ \to μ^+ ν decays using hadronic tagging

We present a search for the rare leptonic decays B+→e+νeB^+ \to e^+ ν_e and B+→μ+νμB^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ, using the full Υ(4S)Υ(4S) data sample of 772×106772\times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB\rm {\small KEKB} asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. One of the BB mesons from the Υ(4S)→BBˉΥ(4S) \to B\bar{B} decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode, while the recoiling side is analyzed for the signal decay. We find no evidence of a signal in any of the decay modes. Upper limits of the corresponding branching fractions are determined as B(B+→e+νe)<3.5×10−6{\cal B}(B^+ \to e^+ ν_e)<3.5\times 10^{-6} and B(B+→μ+νμ)<2.7×10−6{\cal B}(B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ)<2.7 \times 10^{-6} at 90%\% confidence level.

The importance of the bulk viscosity of QCD in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the consequences of a nonzero bulk viscosity coefficient on the transverse momentum spectra, azimuthal momentum anisotropy, and multiplicity of charged hadrons produced in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. The agreement between a realistic 3D hybrid simulation and the experimentally measured data considerably improves with the addition of a bulk viscosity coefficient for strongly interacting matter. This paves the way for an eventual quantitative determination of several QCD transport coefficients from the experimental heavy ion and hadron-nucleus collision programs.

The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Amplitude analysis of e+e- => Y(nS)pi+pi- at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV

We report results on studies of the e+e- annihilation into three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- (n=1,2,3) final states including measurements of cross sections and the full amplitude analysis. The cross sections measured at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV and corrected for the initial state radiation are sigma(e+e-=>Y(1S)pi+pi-)=(2.27+-0.12+-0.14) pb, sigma(e+e-=>Y(2S)pi+pi-)=(4.07+-0.16+-0.45) pb, and sigma(e+e-=>Y(3S)pi+pi-)=(1.46+-0.09+-0.16) pb. Amplitude analysis of the three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- final states strongly favors I^G(J^P)=1^+(1^+) quantum-number assignments for the two bottomonium-like Zb+- states, recently observed in the Y(nS)pi+- and hb(mP)pi+- (m=1,2) decay channels. The results are obtained with a $121.4 1/fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Study of B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 decays, implications for the CKM angle phi_2 and search for other B^0 decay modes with a four-pion final state

We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0->rho0rho0 and the fraction of longitudinally polarized rho0 mesons in this decay. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find 166 +- 59 B^0 -> rho0 rho0 events (including systematic uncertainties), corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B^0->rho0rho0) = (1.02 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst)) x 10^{-6} with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a longitudinal polarization fraction fL = 0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (stat) +- 0.15 (syst). We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle phi_2 = (84.9 +- 13.5) degrees through an isospin analysis in the B->rhorho system. We furthermore find 149 +- 49 B^0->f0rho0 events, corresponding to B(B^0->f0rho0) x B(f0->pi+pi-) = (0.78 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst)) x 10^{-6}, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations. Magnetic field tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition at the LaAlO3_3 /SrTiO3_3 interface

We present a study of the magnetic field tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) in the electron gas that forms at the LaAlO3_3/SrTiO3_3 interface. We find that the magnetic field induces a transition into a weakly insulating state, as is observed for the electrostatically tuned SIT at this interface. Finite size scaling of the magnetoresistance yields the critical exponent product zν≃zν\simeq 7/3, indicating that the transition is governed by quantum percolation effects. While such critical exponents have been reported previously for high resistance films, they have not been reported for a low resistance system like ours, with a maximum sheet resistance of ≈\approx 1.5 kΩΩ, much less than the quantum of resistance RQ≡h/4e2=6.45R_Q \equiv h/4e^2 = 6.45 kΩΩ.

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay Bs0→J/ψ ϕ(1020)B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020), evidence and a branching fraction measurement for Bs0→J/ψ f2′(1525)B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525), and the determination of the total Bs0→J/ψ K+K−B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^- branching fraction, including the resonant and non-resonant contributions to the K+K−K^+K^- channel. The branching fraction ratio is found to be B[Bs0→J/ψ f2′(1525)]/B[Bs0→J/ψ ϕ(1020)]=(21.5±4.9(stat)±2.6(syst))\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)]/\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)]=(21.5\pm 4.9\left(\mathrm{stat}\right) \pm2.6\left(\mathrm{syst}\right))%. Measurements of Branching Fractions and Direct CP Asymmetries for B -> K pi, B->pi pi and B->to KK Decays

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries (A_{CP}) for B->K pi, pi pi and KK decays (but not pi^0 pi^0) based on the final data sample of 772x10^6 B B-bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider. We set a 90% confidence-level upper limit for K^+- K^-+ at 2.0x10^{-7}; all other decays are observed with branching fractions ranging from 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}. In the $B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ mode, we confirm Belle's previously reported large A_{CP} with a value of -0.069 +- 0.014 +- 0.007 and a significance of 4.4 sigma. For all other flavor-specific modes, we find A_{CP} values consistent with zero, including A_{CP}(K^+- π^0) = +0.043 +- 0.024 +- 0.007 with 1.8 sigma significance. The difference of CP asymmetry between B^+- -> K^+- pi^0 and B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ is found to be Delta A_{K pi} equiv A_{CP} (K^+ pi^0) - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) = +0.112 +- 0.027 +- 0.007 with 4.0 sigma significance. We also calculate the ratios of partial widths for the B-> K pi decays. Using our results, we test the validity of the sum rule A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) + A_{CP}(K^0π^+) x Gamma(K^0π^+)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-)} - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^0)x 2Gamma(K^+ pi^0)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-) - A_{CP}(K^0 pi^0)x 2Gamma(K^0 pi^0)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-) = 0 and obtain a sum of -0.270 +- 0.132 +- 0.060 with 1.9 sigma significance.

The results are obtained from a data sample of 913 fb^-1 collected at or near the Y(4S) and Y(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The branching fractions of hadronic decays are measured to be Br(Ds+ -> K- K+ pi+) = (5.06 +- 0.15 +- 0.21)%, Br(Ds+ -> anti-K0 K+) = (2.95 +- 0.11 +- 0.09)%, and Br(Ds+ -> eta pi+) = (1.82 +- 0.14 +- 0.07)%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The branching fractions of leptonic decays are measured to be Br(Ds+ -> mu+ nu_mu) = (0.531 +- 0.028 +- 0.020)%, and Br(Ds+ -> tau+ nu_tau) = (5.70 +- 0.21 +0.31-0.30)%, which are combined to determine the Ds+ meson decay constant f_Ds = (255.5 +- 4.2 +- 5.1) MeV. Precise measurement of the branching fractions for Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- and first measurement of the Ds*+ Ds*- polarization using e+e- collisions

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0->Ds+ Ds-) = (0.58 +0.11 -0.09 +-0.13)%, B(Bs0->Ds*+- Ds-+) = (1.8 +-0.2 +-0.4)%, and B(Bs0->Ds*+ Ds*-) = (2.0 +-0.3 +-0.5)%; the sum is B(Bs0->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- = (4.3 +-0.4 +-1.0)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta(Gamma_s)/cos(phi_s), where Delta(Gamma_s) is the difference in widths between the two Bs0-Bs0bar mass eigenstates, and phi_s is the CP-violating phase in Bs0-Bs0bar mixing. For phi_s=0 we obtain Delta(Gamma_s)/Gamma_s = 0.090 +-0.009 (stat.) +-0.023 (syst.), where Gamma_s is the mean decay width. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs->Ds*+ Ds*-; the result is 0.12 +0.30 -0.28 +0.04 -0.05.

Search for Bottomonium States in Exclusive Radiative Upsilon(2S) Decays

The (bb-bar) system is reconstructed in 26 exclusive hadronic final states composed of charged pions, kaons, protons, and K^0_S mesons. We find no evidence for the state recently observed around 9975 MeV (X_(bb-bar)) in an analysis based on a data sample of 9.3 X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events collected with the CLEO III detector. We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

Evidence for charge-vortex duality at the LaAlO3_3/SrTiO3_3 interface

The concept of duality has proved extremely powerful in extending our understanding in many areas of physics (1, 2). Charge-vortex duality has been proposed (3, 4) as a model to understand the superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) in disordered thin films (5, 6) and Josephson junction arrays (7, 8, 9). In this model, on the superconducting side, one has delocalized Cooper pairs but localized vortices; while on the insulating side, one has localized Cooper pairs but mobile vortices. Here we show a new experimental manifestation of this duality in the electron gas that forms at the interface between LaAlO3_3 (LAO) and SrTiO3_3 (STO) (10, 11, 12, 13, 14). The effect is due to the motion of vortices generated by the magnetization dynamics of the ferromagnet that also forms at the same interface (14, 15, 16), which results in an increase in resistance on the superconducting side of the transition, but an increase in conductance on the insulating side.

The invariant mass spectrum of the η' π^+ π^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the η_c and measure its mass and width to be M(η_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. In searches for rare phenomena such as elastic scattering of dark matter particles or neutrinoless double beta decay, alpha decays of Rn222 progenies attached to the surfaces of the detection material have been identified as a serious source of background. In measurements with CsI(Tl) scintillator crystals, we demonstrate that alpha decays of surface contaminants produce fast signals with a characteristic mean-time distribution that is distinct from those of neutron- and gamma-induced events.

Measurement of gamma gamma* --> pi0 transition form factor at Belle

We report a measurement of the process gamma gamma* --> pi0 with a 759 fb^{-1} data sample recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The pion transition form factor, F(Q^2), is measured for the kinematical region 4 GeV^2 <~ Q^2 <~ 40 GeV^2, where -Q^2 is the invariant mass squared of a virtual photon. The measured values of Q^2|F(Q^2)| agree well with the previous measurements below Q^2 ~= 9 GeV^2 but do not exhibit the rapid growth in the higher Q^2 region seen in another recent measurement, which exceeds the asymptotic QCD expectation by as much as 50%.

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2ϕ1ϕ_1 with a New Tagging Method at the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2ϕ1ϕ_1 at the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonance using a new tagging method, called "BB-ππ tagging." In Υ(5S)Υ(5S) decays containing a neutral BB meson, a charged BB, and a charged pion, the neutral BB is reconstructed in the J/ψKS0J/ψK_S^0 CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral BB meson at the moment of the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) decay is opposite to that of the charged BB and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged BB. From the asymmetry between BB-π+π^+ and BB-π−π^- tagged J/ψKS0J/ψK_S^0 yields, we determine sin2ϕ1ϕ_1 = 0.57 ±\pm 0.58(stat) ±\pm 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb−1^{-1} of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider.

New Limits on Interactions between Weakly Interacting Massive Particles and Nucleons Obtained with CsI(Tl) Crystal Detectors

New limits are presented on the cross section for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering in the KIMS CsI(T) detector array at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The exposure used for these results is 24524.3 kg\cdotdays. Nuclei recoiling from WIMP interactions are identified by a pulse shape discrimination method. A low energy background due to alpha emitters on the crystal surfaces is identified and taken into account in the analysis. The detected numbers of nuclear recoils are consistent with zero and 90% confidence level upper limits on the WIMP interaction rates are set for electron equivalent energies from 3 keV to 11 keV. The 90% upper limit of NR event rate for 3.6-5.8 keV corresponding to 2-4 keV in NaI(T) is 0.0098 counts/kg/keV/day which is below the annual modulation amplitude reported by DAMA. This is incompatible with interpretations that enhance the modulation amplitude such as inelastic dark matter models. We establish the most stringent cross section limits on spin-dependent WIMP-proton elastic scattering for the WIMP masses greater than 20 GeV/c2.

The Quantum Torus Chain

We introduce a new set of one dimensional quantum lattice models which we refer to as The quantum torus chain. These models have discrete global symmetry, and projective on-site representations. They possess an integer-valued parameter which controls the presence or absence of frustration. Depending on whether this parameter is even or odd these models either exhibit gapped symmetry breaking phases with isolated critical points, or gapped symmetry breaking phases separated by gapless phases. We discuss the property of these phases and phase transitions for two special values of the parameter and point out many open problems

The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) = (1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) = (2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) = (3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) = (6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio ΔΓ_s/cos(ϕ), where ΔΓ_s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and ϕis a CP-violating weak phase. Superconductivity and Abelian Chiral Anomalies

Motivated by the geometric character of spin Hall conductance, the topological invariants of generic superconductivity are discussed based on the Bogoliuvov-de Gennes equation on lattices. They are given by the Chern numbers of degenerate condensate bands for unitary order, which are realizations of Abelian chiral anomalies for non-Abelian connections. The three types of Chern numbers for the x,yx,y and zz-directions are given by covering degrees of some doubled surfaces around the Dirac monopoles. For nonunitary states, several topological invariants are defined by analyzing the so-called qq-helicity. Topological origins of the nodal structures of superconducting gaps are also discussed.
