Anomalies in the core level spectroscopy of a noncentrosymmetric solid, BiPd

Understanding exotic solids is a difficult task as interactions are often hidden by the symmetry of the system. Here, we study the electronic properties of a noncentrosymmetric solid, BiPd, which is a rare material exhibiting both superconductivity and topological phase of matter. Employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy with photon energies ranging from hard x-ray to extreme ultraviolet regime, we show that hard x-ray spectroscopy alone is not enough to reveal surface-bulk differences in the electronic structure. We derived the escape depths close to the extreme surface sensitivity and find that the photon energies used for high resolution measurements such as ARPES fall in the surface sensitive regime. In addition, we discover deviation of the branching ratio of Bi core level features derived from conventional quantum theories of the core hole final states. Such paradigm shift in core level spectroscopy can be attributed to the absence of center of symmetry and spin-orbit interactions.

Ferromagnetic ordering of minority Ce$^{3+}$ spins in a quasi-skutterudite Ce${_3}$Os${_4}$Ge$_{13}$ single crystal

We report site disorder driven ferromagnetic ordering of nearly 8$\%$ Ce atoms in single crystalline Ce${_3}$Os${_4}$Ge$_{13}$ below 0.5~K. Ce${_3}$Os${_4}$Ge$_{13}$ crystallizes in a cubic structure with space group $\it{Pm\bar{3}n}$. The structural analysis shows the presence of site-disorder in the system, where 2(a) Ge site is partially occupied by the Ce atoms. Due to the small Ce $4f$-ligand hybridization, these Ce atoms are in the Ce$^{3+}$ (magnetic) state while rest of the Ce atoms in the unit cell are in Ce$^{4-δ}$ (non-magnetic) state. The heat capacity shows a peak below 0.5~K corresponding to the ferromagnetic ordering of the Ce$^{3+}$ moments. The ferromagnetic ordering below 0.5~K is also seen in the ac-susceptibility data. At low temperatures (1.8~K$\leq T\leq 6$~K), the magnetization shows $log(T)$ dependence, whereas the resistivity shows power law ($T^n$) temperature dependence indicating the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the quasiparticles.

{Multiband Superconductivity in Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$

Intermetallic R$_3$T$_4$X$_{13}$ series consists of cage like structure and have been in focus due to their unconventional electronic ground states. In this work, we report the normal and superconducting state properties of a high quality single crystal of Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$. Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ belongs to the above mentioned series and crystallizes in a cubic crystal structure with the space group $\it{Pm\bar{3}n}$. Using electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements, we show that Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a type-II multi-band superconductor ($T{_c} =3.1$~K) with unusual superconducting properties. The analysis of the low temperature heat capacity data suggests that Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a moderately coupled multi-band BCS superconductor with two gaps ($2Δ/ {k{_B}T{_c}} = 3.68 \pm {0.04} ~\& ~0.34 \pm {0.02}$) in the superconducting state. The dc-magnetization ($M-H$) shows a large reversible region in the superconducting state similar to the vortex liquid phase observed in high-$T{_c}$ superconductors. The value of the Ginzburg number $G_{i}$ suggests that the thermal fluctuations, though small as compared to those in high-$T{_c}$ cuprates, may play an important role in the unpinning of the vortices in this compound. The electronic band structure calculations show that three bands cross the Fermi level and constitute a complex Fermi surface in Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$

The CeMIn5 (M = Rh, Ir and Co) System and the Single Energy Scale Model of Metamagnetism

For a decade and a half, CeCoIn$_5$ and related alloys have served as a rich playground to explore the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Despite this extended study, the presence/absence of metamagnetism (MM) in this ternary system remains as an unresolved issue. Here we show that the linear and non-linear magnetic response in CeMIn$_5$ (M = Rh, Ir and Co) can be understood within the context of the recently proposed single energy scale (SES) model of MM. New measurements of the third-order susceptibility, $χ_3$, in CeCoIn$_5$ are presented and together with the known systematics of the linear susceptibility in all three compounds, are shown to be consistent with the SES model. Predictions are made for the MM critical field in CeCoIn$_5$ and the fifth-order susceptibility, $χ_5$.

Anamalous positive magnetization signal at the onset of normal to superconductor transition in single crystal Nb sphere

We report the observation of positive magnetization signal at the onset of superconducting transition in isothemral and isomagnetic measurements in single crystal Niobium sphere. The PME displays two regimes, viz., low applied magnetic fields H < 4 Oe) and higher fields H > 120 Oe, and the PME signal is absent at the intermediate magnetic fields. Subsequently, the isothermal magnetization data shows the presence of positive signal at the superconductor to normal transition. Using this data we are able to plot the H(c3)-T(c3) line, at which the positive magnetization signal nucleates, in the phase diagram of single crystal Nb.

Characterization of neutron transmutation doped (NTD) Ge for low temperature sensor development

Development of NTD Ge sensors has been initiated for low temperature (mK) thermometry in The India-based Tin detector (TIN.TIN). NTD Ge sensors are prepared by thermal neutron irradiation of device grade Ge samples at Dhruva reactor, BARC, Mumbai. Detailed measurements have been carried out in irradiated samples for estimating the carrier concentration and fast neutron induced defects. The Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) measurements indicated monovacancy type defects for all irradiated samples, while Channeling studies employing RBS with 2 MeV alpha particles, revealed no significant defects in the samples exposed to fast neutron fluence of $\sim 4\times10^{16}/cm^2$. Both PALS and Channeling studies have shown that vacuum annealing at 600 $^\circ$C for $\sim2$ hours is sufficient to recover the damage in the irradiated samples, thereby making them suitable for the sensor development.

Probing anisotropy in a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd

Strength of Rashba type antisymmetric spin orbit coupling has the crucial effect on superconducting and normal state properties in noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors. This can be seen on various anisotropic properties of the system. For a system with lowered crystalline symmetry as in noncentrosymmetric crystals, the superconducting pairing state can have correlation to the normal state properties. In our earlier work we have shown that alfa-BiPd which has a monoclinic (P_21) structure with the absence of the centre of inversion exhibits bulk superconductivity at 3.8 K. In order to understand the role of spin-orbit scattering, we have studied the anisotropic properties of high quality single crystal (RRR 170) of NCS BiPd by measuring magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport from 1.8 K to 300 K and isothermal M_H loop (1.8 K to 3.8 K) in the superconducting state for <010> and <100> crystallographic directions respectively. Moderate anisotropy up to 30 % has been found in the electrical transport possibly indicating significant Rashba type antisymmetric spin orbit coupling present in alfa-BiPd.

Superconductivity in cubic noncentrosymmetric PdBiSe Crystal

Mixing of spin singlet and spin triplet superconducting pairing state is expected in noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCS) due to the inherent presence of Rashba-type antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. Unlike low symmetry (tetragonal or monoclinic) NCS, parity is isotropicaly broken in space for cubic NCS and can additionally lead to the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting state under certain conditions. Motivated with such enriched possibility of unconventional superconducting phases in cubic NCS we are reporting successful formation of single crystalline cubic noncentrosymmetric PdBiSe with lattice parameter a = 6.4316 Å and space group P2_1 3 (space group no. 198) which undergoes to superconducting transition state below 1.8 K as measured by electrical transport and AC susceptibility measurements. Significant strength of Rashba-type antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling can be expected for PdBiSe due to the presence of high Z (atomic number) elements consequently making it potential candidate for unconventional superconductivity.

Superconductivity in Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$: A comparative study

A variety of unconventional superconductors have low carrier density as a common factor. However, the underlying mechanism of superconductivity in such low carrier density systems is not well understood. Besides, small carrier density is an unfavourable component for conventional superconductivity as described by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Therefore, studying low carrier density systems can lead to a better understanding in such systems. In this paper, we report superconductivity property studies in low carrier density systems, Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$, using various experimental techniques. Single crystals of Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ have been grown using the Czochralski crystal pulling method in a tetra-arc furnace. The x-ray diffraction experiment reveals that both compounds crystallize in cubic structure {(space group $\it{Pm3n}$, no. 223)}. The transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements show that Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ single crystal undergoes a superconducting transition at 2.85~K, whereas, Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ becomes superconductor at 3.1~K.

Physical, optical and nonlinear properties of InS single crystal

Indium Sulphide (InS) single crystals are successfully grown by In flux. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows orthorhombic structure of Pnnm space group. Ellipsometry measurements performed on the (010) oriented crystal exhibit low anisotropy in the 300-1000 nm wavelength range and consequently negligible THz emission is observed. Optical band gap of $2.09 eV$ is deduced from linear optical measurements. Nonlinear optical properties are studied by single beam Z-scan measurements at 800 nm, where two-photon absorption is present. Nonlinear refractive index and absorption coefficient are estimated to be $η_2$ = $2.3 10^{-11} cm^2/W$ and $β$= $62.4 cm/ GW$, respectively for excitation intensity of $0.32 GW/cm^2$. The origin of nonlinearity in InS crystal is accounted to be due to the third-order anharmonic motion of the bound electrons.

Superconductivity in a low carrier density system: A single crystal study of cubic Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$

We have successfully grown the single crystal of a low carrier density system Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ which crystallizes in the cubic crystal structure with the space group Pm3n. Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ exhibits super conductivity below 2.85 K as determined from the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The bulk measurements indicate multiband superconductivity in this low carrier system. Hall effect measurements show that the Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and it decreases rapidly with temperature which is highly unusual. The simple estimation of the carrier concentration gives a value (\sim 10$^{20}$/cm$^3$) which is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than that of a conventional metal like Cu which seems to suggest that Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a semimetal that display multiband superconductivity.

Coupling between quantum Hall state and electromechanics in suspended graphene resonator

Using graphene resonator, we perform electromechanical measurements in quantum Hall regime to probe the coupling between a quantum Hall (QH) system and its mechanical motion. Mechanically perturbing the QH state through resonance modifies the DC resistance of the system and results in a Fano-lineshape due to electronic interference. Magnetization of the system modifies the resonator's equilibrium position and effective stiffness leading to changes in resonant frequency. Our experiments show that there is an intimate coupling between the quantum Hall state and mechanics - electron transport is affected by physical motion and in turn the magnetization modifies the electromechanical response.

Critical behavior at de-pinning of a driven disordered vortex matter in 2H-NbS2

We report unusual jamming in driven ordered vortex flow in 2H-NbS2. Reinitiating movement in these jammed vortices with a higher driving force, and halting it thereafter once again with a reduction in drive, unfolds a critical behavior centered around the de-pinning threshold via divergences in the lifetimes of transient states, validating the predictions of a recent simulation study, which also pointed out a correspondence between plastic de-pinning in vortex matter and the notion of random organization proposed in the context of sheared colloids undergoing diffusive motion.

Stoichiometry of the intercalated unit cell was also calculated from the projected potential.

Effect of Ni-doping on magnetism and superconductivity in Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2

The effect of Ni-doping on the magnetism and superconductivity in Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 has been studied through a systematic investigation of magnetic and superconducting properties of Eu0.5K0.5(Fe1-xNix)2As2 (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.12) compounds by means of dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements. Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 is known to exhibit superconductivity with superconducting transition temperature Tc as high as 33 K. The Ni-doping leads to a rapid decrease in Tc; Tc is reduced to 23 K with 3% Ni-doping, and 8% Ni-doping suppresses the superconductivity to below 1.8 K. In 3% Ni-doped sample Eu0.5K0.5(Fe0.97Ni0.03)2As2 superconductivity coexists with short range ordering of Eu2+ magnetic moments at Tm ~ 6 K. The suppression of superconductivity with Ni-doping is accompanied with the emergence of a long range antiferromagnetic ordering with TN = 8.5 K and 7 K for Eu0.5K0.5(Fe0.92Ni0.08)2As2 and Eu0.5K0.5(Fe0.88Ni0.12)2As2, respectively. The temperature and field dependent magnetic measurements for x = 0.08 and 0.12 samples reflect the possibility of a helical magnetic ordering of Eu2 moments. We suspect that the helimagnetism of Eu spins could be responsible for the destruction of superconductivity as has been observed in Co-doped EuFe2As2. The most striking feature seen in the resistivity data for x = 0.08 is the reappearance of the anomaly presumably due to spin density wave transition at around 60 K. This could be attributed to the compensation of holes (K-doping at Eu-site) by the electrons (Ni-doping at Fe site). The anomaly associated with spin density wave further shifts to 200 K for x = 0.12 for which the electron doping has almost compensated the holes in the system.

Magnetic and transport properties of Pr2Pt3Si5

We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of a polycrystalline Pr2Pt3Si5 sample through the dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. The Rietveld refinement of the powder X-ray diffraction data reveals that Pr2Pt3Si5 crystallizes in the U2Co3Si5-type orthorhombic structure (space group Ibam). Both the dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data measured at low fields exhibit sharp anomaly near 15 K. In contrast, the specific heat data exhibit only a broad anomaly implying no long range magnetic order down to 2 K. The broad Schottky-type anomaly in low temperature specific heat data is interpreted in terms of crystal electric field (CEF) effect, and a CEF-split singlet ground state is inferred. The absence of the long range order is attributed to the presence of nonmagnetic singlet ground state of the Pr3+ ion. The electrical resistivity data exhibit metallic behavior and are well described by the Bloch-Grüniesen-Mott relation.

`17-15' Superconductivity - Rh17S15 and Pd17Se15

The presence of strongly correlated superconductivity in Rh17S15 has been recently established. In this work, we compare the normal and superconducting parameters of a single crystal of Rh17S15 with those of a polycrystalline sample of Pd17Se15 which is reported here for the first time to be a superconductor below 2.2 K. Pd17Se15, which is iso-structural to Rh17S15 (space group Pm3m), has very different properties and provides for an interesting study in contrast with Rh17S15. We see that large unit volume of Pd17Se15 and the large separation of Pd-Pd atoms in its structure as compared those in a pure Pd metal lead to the absence of strong correlations in this compound. Finally, we report band structure calculations on these two compounds and compare the density of states with estimates from heat capacity data. Upper critical field, Heat capacity (down to 500 mK), Hall effect and band structure studies suggest that Rh17S15 is a multiband superconductor.

Crossover from paramagnetic compressed flux regime to diamagnetic pinned vortex lattice in a single crystal of cubic Ca(3)Rh(4)Sn(13)

We report the observation of positive magnetization on field cooling (PMFC) in low applied magnetic fields (H < 100 Oe) in a single crystal of Ca(3)Rh(4)Sn(13) near its superconducting transition temperature (T(c) approx 8.35 K). For 30 Oe < H < 100 Oe, the PMFC response crosses over to a diamagnetic response as the temperature is lowered below 8 K. For 100 Oe < H < 300 Oe, the diamagnetic response undergoes an unexpected reversal in its field dependence above a characteristic temperature (designated as T*(VL) = 7.9 K), where the field-cooled cool-down magnetization curves intersect. The in-phase and out-of-phase ac susceptibility data confirm the change in the superconducting state across T*(VL). We ascribe the PMFC response to a compression of magnetic flux caused by the nucleation of superconductivity at the surface of the sample. In very low fields (H < 20 Oe), the PMFC response has an interesting oscillatory behaviour which persists up to about 7 K. The oscillatory nature underlines the interplay between competing responses contributing to the magnetization signal in PMFC regime. We believe that the (i) counterintuitive field dependence of the diamagnetic response for H > 100 Oe and above T*(VL) (lasting up to T(c), (ii) the oscillatory character in PMFC response at low fields and (iii) the PMFC peaks near 8.2 K in 30 Oe <= H <= 100 Oe provide support in favour of a theoretical scenario based on the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The scenario predicts the possibility of complex magnetic fluctuations associated with transformation between different metastable giant vortex states prior to transforming into the conventional vortex state as the sample is cooled below T*(VL).

Doping dependent evolution of magnetism and superconductivity in Eu1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0-1) and temperature dependence of lower critical field Hc1

We have synthesized the polycrystalline samples of Eu1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0-1) and carried out systematic characterization using x-ray diffraction, ac & dc magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. We have seen a clear signature of the coexistence of superconducting transition (Tc = 5.5 K) with SDW ordering in our under doped sample viz. x = 0.15. The spin density wave transition observed in EuFe2As2 get completely suppressed at x = 0.3 and superconductivity arises below 20 K. Superconducting transition temperature Tc increases with increase in K content and a maximum Tc = 33 K is reached for x = 0.5, beyond which it decreases again. The doping dependent T(x) phase diagram is extracted from the magnetic and electrical transport data. It is found that magnetic ordering of Eu-moments coexists with superconductivity up to x = 0.6. The isothermal magnetization data taken at 2 K for the doped samples suggest 2+ valence states of Eu ions. We also present the temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1 of superconducting polycrystalline samples. The value of Hc1(0) obtained for x = 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 after taking the demagnetization factor into account is 248, 385, and 250 Oe, respectively. The London penetration depth λ(T) calculated from the lower critical field does not show exponential behaviour at low temperature, as would be expected for a fully gapped clean s-wave superconductor. In contrast, it shows a T2 power-law feature down to T = 0.4 Tc, as observed in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 and BaFe2-xCoxAs2.

High Q electromechanics with InAs nanowire quantum dots

In this report, we study electromechanical properties of a suspended InAs nanowire (NW) resonator. At low temperatures, the NW acts as the island of a single electron transistor (SET) and we observe a strong coupling between electrons and mechanical modes at resonance; the rate of electron tunneling is approximately 10 times the resonant frequency. Above and below the mechanical resonance, the magnitude of Coulomb peaks is different and we observe Fano resonance in conductance due to the interference between two contributions to potential of the SET. The quality factor ($Q$) of these devices is observed $\sim10^5$ at 100 mK.

Magnetization hysteresis and time decay measurements in FeSe$_{0.50}$Te$_{0.50}$ : Evidence for fluctuation in mean free path induced pinning

We present results of magnetic measurements relating to vortex phase diagram in a single crystal of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ which displays second magnetization peak anomaly for $H \parallel c$. The possible role of the crystalline anisotropy on vortex pinning is explored via magnetic torque magnetometry. We present evidence in favor of pinning related to spatial variations of the charge carrier mean free path leading to small bundle vortex pinning by randomly distributed (weak) pinning centers for both $H \parallel c$ and $H \perp c$. This is further corroborated using magnetization data for $H \parallel c$ in a single crystal of FeSe$_{0.35}$Te$_{0.65}$. Dynamical response across second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ has been compared with that across the well researched phenomenon of peak effect (PE) in a single crystal of CeRu$_2$.

Superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric BiPd system

In this work, we establish the bulk superconductivity of a high quality sample of monoclinic BiPd ($α$-BiPd, space group P2$_1$) below 3.87 K by studying its electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity. We show that it is clean type-II superconductor with moderate electron-phonon coupling and determine its superconducitng and normal state parameters. Although $α$-BiPd is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with large electronic heat capacity (therefore, large $γ$), the effect of spin-orbit splitting of the electronic bands at the Fermi level is small. This makes little influence on the superconducting properties of $α$-BiPd.

Field induced changes across magnetic compensation in Pr(1-x)Gd(x)Al(2) alloys

The magnetic compensation phenomenon has been explored in the Pr(1-x)Gd(x)Al(2) series. The contributions from Pr and Gd moments compensate each other at a specific temperature in the ordered state (below (T(c)). At high fields, the magnetic reorientation (with respect to the external field direction) of the Pr and Gd moments appears as a minimum in the thermomagnetic response. We demonstrate several interesting attributes related with the magnetic reorienation phenomenon, viz., oscillatory behavior of the magneto-resistance, sign change of the anamalous Hall resistivity, fingerprints of field induced changes in the specific heat and ac-susceptibility data.

Prediction of Retained Capacity and EODV of Li-ion Batteries in LEO Spacecraft Batteries

In resent years ANN is widely reported for modeling in different areas of science including electro chemistry. This includes modeling of different technological batteries such as lead acid battery, Nickel cadmium batteries etc. Lithium ion batteries are advance battery technology which satisfy most of the space mission requirements. Low earth orbit (LEO)space craft batteries undergo large number of charge discharge cycles (about 25000 cycles)compared to other ground level or space applications. This study is indented to develop ANN model for about 25000 cycles, cycled under various temperature, Depth Of Discharge (DOD) settings with constant charge voltage limit to predict the retained capacity and End of Discharge Voltage (EODV). To extract firm conclusion and distinguish the capability of ANN method, the predicted values are compared with experimental result by statistical method and Bland Altman plot.

Search and identification of repeated magnetic compensation in Nd(1-x)R(x)Al(2) (R = Gd, Tb) series

We undertook investigations in polycrystalline R(x)R'(1-x)Al(2) alloys, in particular, explored the stoichiometries, Nd(0.8)Gd(0.2)Al(2) and Nd(0.8)Tb(0.2)Al(2), to study the magnetic compensation behavior in them in the context of contemporary interest. In these admixed rare-earth (RE) intermetallics, the compensation phenomenon is characterized by a crossover of the M = 0 axis in the low field thermomagnetic response, and a turnaround behavior due to the field-induced reversal in the orientations of the RE moments at high fields. While the characteristic attributes are present in Nd(0.8)Gd(0.2)Al(2), a repeated/multiple magnetic compensation behavior stands observed in Nd(0.8)Tb(0.2)Al(2). The ac susceptibility, the heat capacity and the transport measurements in the latter compound reveal the onset of two quasi-antiferromagnetic transitions one after the other on cooling down from the high temperature end. The two magnetic transitions involving competition between the contributions from nearly balanced weighted averages of moments of Nd{3+} and Tb{3+} ions generate the curious multiple crossings of the M = 0 axis. The results are compared and contrasted with repeated compensation behavior reported earlier in admixed Nd(0.8)Gd(0.2)Rh(3)B(2) alloy.

Giant low frequency velocity fluctuations in a driven vortex lattice

The driven state of a well-ordered flux line lattice in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2 in the time domain has revealed the presence of substantial fluctuations in velocity, with large and distinct time periods (~ seconds). A superposition of a periodic drive in the driven vortex lattice causes distinct changes in these fluctuations. We propose that prior to onset of the peak effect there exist hithertofore unexplored regime of coherent dynamics, with unexpected behaviour in velocity fluctuations.

Exchange bias and its phase reversal in the zero magnetization admixed rare earth intermetallics

Exchange bias effect is an important attribute in several device applications. Traditionally, it is discussed as a form of exchange anisotropy at the interface between the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic layers of two distinct systems. We report here on the magnetically ordered alloys possessing the feature of unidirectional anisotropy, which reverses its sign across a characteristic temperature. These are admixed rare earth intermetallics, comprising two dissimilar rare earth (RE) ions, belonging to the two different halves of the 4f-series and imbibing the notion of ferromagnetic coupling between the spins of all 4f-rare earth ions and that of the conduction electrons. Magnetic moments of dissimilar RE ions in such admixed alloys, however, get antiferromagnetically coupled and they display magnetic compensation feature such that the field induced reversal in the orientation of the magnetic moments of dissimilar rare earth ions happens across the compensation temperature (Tcomp). Above a threshold field, the conduction electron polarization also reverses its sign across Tcomp, this is argued to correlate with the observed phase reversal in the exchange bias field.

Sign reversal in the exchange bias and the collapse of hysteresis width across the magnetic compensation temperature in a single crystal of Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2

In the admixed Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2 system, magnetic moments of Nd and Ho occupying the same crystallographic site are antiferromagnetically coupled and the chosen stoichiometry displays a magnetic compensation behavior (Tcomp of about 24 K) in all orientations. In the vicinity of Tcomp, the conduction electron polarization (CEP) assumes the role of a soft ferromagnet exchange coupled to a pseudo-antiferromagnet comprising Nd/Ho moments, resulting in an asymmetry in the hysteretic (M-H) loop, i.e., the notion of an exchange bias field (Hexch). Across Tcomp, the CEP contribution reverses sign, and in consonance, the asymmetry in the M-H loop also undergoes a phase reversal. Interestingly, the width of the M-H loop shows a divergence, followed by a collapse on approaching Tcomp from either end. The observed behavior confirms a long standing prediction based on a phenomenological model for ferrimagnetic systems. The field induced changes across Tcomp leave an imprint of a quasi-phase transition in the heat capacity data. Magneto-resistance (ΔR / R vs T) has an oscillatory response, in which the changes across Tc and Tcomp can be recognized.

Disordered Type-II Superconductors: A Universal Phase Diagram for Low-T$_c$ Systems

A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-T$_c$ type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature ``Bragg glass'' phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an explanation for the anomalies observed in the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ and several other low-T$_c$ materials which is independent of the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these systems.

Peak Effect in Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ : Vortex Phase Diagram and Evidences for Stepwise Amorphization of Flux Line Lattice

The Peak Effect (PE) regime in a single crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been investigated in detail via ac susceptibility as well as dc magnetization measurements. The PE region comprises two discontinuous first order like transitions, located near its onset and peak positions and reflects a stepwise fracturing of the flux line lattice (FLL). This scenario can be construed as an alternative to a scheme involving the appearance of Generalized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (GFFLO) state as considered in the case of PE phenomenon in isostructural Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ system. The procedure of thermal cycling across the onset position of PE produces an open hysteresis loop, which is consistent with the notion of the fracturing of the FLL. A study of thermomagnetic history dependence of different metastable vortex states shows the path dependence in the critical current density J_c(H,T) over a large part of the (H,T) parameter space. The path dependence in J_c ceases above the peak position of the PE, suggesting a complete amorphization and the loss of long range correlations of the FLL at (T_p, H_p) line. A plausible vortex phase diagram has been illustrated for Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$n and phases like an elastic solid, a plastic solid, a pinned amorphous and an unpinned amorphous states have been identified.
