Efficient, Spectrally Tunable Single-Photon Sources Based on Chlorine-Doped ZnSe Nanopillars

Isolated impurity states in epitaxially grown semiconductor systems possess important radiative features such as distinct wavelength emission with a very short radiative lifetime and low inhomogeneous broadening which makes them promising for the generation of indistinguishable single photons. In this study, we investigate chlorine-doped ZnSe/ZnMgSe quantum well (QW) nanopillar (NP) structures as a highly efficient solid-state single-photon source operating at cryogenic temperatures. We show that single photons are generated due to the radiative recombination of excitons bound to neutral Cl atoms in ZnSe QW and the energy of the emitted photon can be tuned from about 2.85 down to 2.82 eV with ZnSe well width increase from 2.7 to 4.7 nm. Following the developed advanced technology we fabricate NPs with a diameter of about 250 nm using a combination of dry and wet-chemical etching of epitaxially grown ZnSe/ZnMgSe QW well structures. The remaining resist mask serves as a spherical- or cylindrical-shaped solid immersion lens on top of NPs and leads to the emission intensity enhancement by up to an order of magnitude in comparison to the pillars without any lenses. NPs with spherical-shaped lenses show the highest emission intensity values. The clear photon-antibunching effect is confirmed by the measured value of the second-order correlation function at a zero time delay of 0.14. The developed single-photon sources are suitable for integration into scalable photonic circuits.

Multiple topological nodal structure in LaSb2 with large linear magnetoresistance

Unconventional fermions in the immensely studied topological semimetals are the source for rich exotic topological properties. Here, using symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose the coexistence of multiple topological nodal structure in LaSb2, including topological nodal surfaces, nodal lines and in particular eightfold degenerate nodal points, which have been scarcely observed in a single material. Further, utilizing high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations measurements, we confirm the existence of nodal surfaces and eightfold degenerate nodal points in LaSb2, and extract the π Berry phase proving the non-trivial electronic band structure topology therein. The intriguing multiple topological nodal structure might play a crucial role in giving rise to the large linear magnetoresistance. Our work renews the insights into the exotic topological phenomena in LaSb2 and its analogous.

Dual topological superconducting states in the layered titanium-based oxypnictide superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O

Topological superconductors have long been predicted to host Majorana zero modes which obey non-Abelian statistics and have potential for realizing non-decoherence topological quantum computation. However, material realization of topological superconductors is still a challenge in condensed matter physics. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we predict and then unveil the coexistence of topological Dirac semimetal and topological insulator states in the vicinity of Fermi energy ($E_F$) in the titanium-based oxypnictide superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O. Further spin-resolved measurements confirm its spin-helical surface states around $E_F$, which are topologically protected and give an opportunity for realization of Majorana zero modes and Majorana flat bands in one material. Hosting dual topological superconducting states, the intrinsic superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O is expected to be a promising platform for further investigation of topological superconductivity.

Unraveling photoinduced spin dynamics in topological insulator Bi2Se3

We report on time-resolved ultrafast optical spectroscopy study of the topological insulator (TI) Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We unravel that a net spin polarization can not only be generated using circularly polarized light via interband transitions between topological surface states (SSs), but also via transitions between SSs and bulk states. Our experiment demonstrates that tuning photon energy or temperature can essentially allow for photoexcitation of spin-polarized electrons to unoccupied topological SSs with two distinct spin relaxation times ($\sim$25 fs and $\sim$300 fs), depending on the coupling between SSs and bulk states. The intrinsic mechanism leading to such distinctive spin dynamics is the scattering in SSs and bulk states which is dominated by $E_g^2$ and $A_{1g}^1$ phonon modes, respectively. These findings are suggestive of novel ways to manipulate the photoinduced coherent spins in TIs.

Carrier dependent ferromagnetism in chromium doped topological insulator $Cr_{0.2}Bi_xSb_{1.8-x}Te_3$

Carrier-independent ferromagnetism of chromium doped topological insulator $Bi_xSb_{2-x}Te_3$ thin films, which cannot be explained by current theory of dilute magnetic semiconductor, has been reported recently. To study if it is related to the distinctive surface state of topological insulator, we studied the structural, magnetic and transport characters of $Cr_{0.2}Bi_xSb_{1.8-x}Te_3$ single crystals. The Curie temperature $T_c$, which is determined from magnetization and anomalous Hall effect measurements by Arrott plots, is found to be proportional to $p^{1/3}$, where p is the hole density. This fact supports a scenario of RKKY interaction with mean-field approximation. This carrier density dependent nature enables tuning and controlling of the magnetic properties by applying a gate voltage in the future science researches and spintronics applications.

Density-functional studies of spin-orbit splitting in graphene on metals

Spin-orbit splitting in graphene on Ni, Au, or Ag (111) substrates was examined on the basis of density-functional theory. Graphene grown on the three metals was found to have Rashba splitting of a few or several tens of meV. The strong splitting obtained on Au or Ag substrates was mainly ascribed to effective hybridization of graphene $p_{z}$ state with Au or Ag $d_{z^{2}}$ states, rather than charge transfer as previously proposed. Our work provides theoretical understandings of the metal-induced Rashba effect in graphene.

Ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics in Bi2Se3 crystals

Ultrafast time-resolved differential reflectivity of Bi2Se3 crystals is studied using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Three distinct relaxation processes are found to contribute to the initial transient reflectivity changes. The deduced relaxation timescale and the sign of the reflectivity change suggest that electron-phonon interactions and defect-induced charge trapping are the underlying mechanisms for the three processes. After the crystal is exposed to air, the relative strength of these processes is altered and becomes strongly dependent on the excitation photon energy.

Knot undulator to generate linearly polarized photons with low on-axis power density

Heat load on beamline optics is a serious problem to generate pure linearly polarized photons in the third generation synchrotron radiation facilities. For permanent magnet undulators, this problem can be overcome by a figure-8 operating mode. But there is still no good method to tackle this problem for electromagnetic elliptical undulators. Here, a novel operating mode is suggested, which can generate pure linearly polarized photons with very low on-axis heat load. Also the available minimum photon energy of linearly polarized photons can be extended much by this method.
