Application and modeling of an online distillation method to reduce krypton and argon in XENON1T

A novel online distillation technique was developed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment to reduce intrinsic background components more volatile than xenon, such as krypton or argon, while the detector was operating. The method is based on a continuous purification of the gaseous volume of the detector system using the XENON1T cryogenic distillation column. A krypton-in-xenon concentration of $(360 \pm 60)$ ppq was achieved. It is the lowest concentration measured in the fiducial volume of an operating dark matter detector to date. A model was developed and fit to the data to describe the krypton evolution in the liquid and gas volumes of the detector system for several operation modes over the time span of 550 days, including the commissioning and science runs of XENON1T. The online distillation was also successfully applied to remove Ar-37 after its injection for a low energy calibration in XENON1T. This makes the usage of Ar-37 as a regular calibration source possible in the future. The online distillation can be applied to next-generation experiments to remove krypton prior to, or during, any science run. The model developed here allows further optimization of the distillation strategy for future large scale detectors.

Double-Weak Decays of $^{124}$Xe and $^{136}$Xe in the XENON1T and XENONnT Experiments

We present results on the search for double-electron capture ($2ν\text{ECEC}$) of $^{124}$Xe and neutrinoless double-$β$ decay ($0νββ$) of $^{136}$Xe in XENON1T. We consider captures from the K- up to the N-shell in the $2ν\text{ECEC}$ signal model and measure a total half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2ν\text{ECEC}}=(1.1\pm0.2_\text{stat}\pm0.1_\text{sys})\times 10^{22}\;\text{yr}$ with a $0.87\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ isotope exposure. The statistical significance of the signal is $7.0\,σ$. We use XENON1T data with $36.16\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ of $^{136}$Xe exposure to search for $0νββ$. We find no evidence of a signal and set a lower limit on the half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0νββ} > 1.2 \times 10^{24}\;\text{yr}\; \text{at}\; 90\,\%\;\text{CL}$. This is the best result from a dark matter detector without an enriched target to date. We also report projections on the sensitivity of XENONnT to $0νββ$. Assuming a $275\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ $^{136}$Xe exposure, the expected sensitivity is $T_{1/2}^{0νββ} > 2.1 \times 10^{25}\;\text{yr}\; \text{at}\; 90\,\%\;\text{CL}$, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass range of $\langle m_{ββ} \rangle < (0.19 - 0.59)\;\text{eV/c}^2$.

Extremely low-energy collective modes in a quasi-one-dimensional system

We have investigated the quasiparticle dynamics and collective excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional material ZrTe$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our time-domain results reveal two coherent oscillations having extremely low energies of $\hbarω_1\sim$0.33 meV (0.08 THz) and $\hbarω_2\sim$1.9 meV (0.45 THz), which are softened as the temperature approaches two different critical temperatures ($\sim$54 K and $\sim$135 K). We attribute these two collective excitations to the amplitude mode of charge density wave instabilities in ZrTe$_5$ with tremendously small nesting wave vectors. Furthermore, scattering with the $\hbarω_2$ mode may result in a peculiar quasiparticle decay process with a timescale of $\sim$1-2 ps below the transition temperature $T^*$ ($\sim$135 K). Our findings provide pivotal information for studying the fluctuating order parameters and their associated quasiparticle dynamics in various low-dimensional topological systems and other materials.

Hybridization dynamics in CeCoIn5 revealed by ultrafast optical spectroscopy

We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the prototype heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this material system undergoes hybridization fluctuations before full establishment of the heavy electron coherence, as the temperature decreases from $\sim$120 K ($T^\dagger$) to $\sim$55 K ($T^*$ ). We reveal that the observed anomalous phonon softening and damping reduction below $T^*$ are directly associated with opening of an indirect hybridization gap. We also discover a distinct collective mode with an energy of $\sim$8 meV, which may be the experimental evidence of the predicted unconventional density wave. Our observations provide critical informations for understanding the hybridization dynamics in heavy fermion materials.

LBECA: A Low Background Electron Counting Apparatus for Sub-GeV Dark Matter Detection

Two-phase noble liquid detectors, with large target masses and effective background reduction, are currently leading the dark matter direct detection for WIMP masses above a few GeV. Due to their sensitivity to single ionized electron signals, these detectors were shown to also have strong constraints for sub-GeV dark matter via their scattering on electrons. In fact, the most stringent direct detection constraints for sub-GeV dark matter down to as low as ~5 MeV come from noble liquid detectors, namely XENON10, DarkSide-50, XENON100 and XENON1T, although these experiments still suffer from high background at single or a few electron level. LBECA is a planned 100-kg scale liquid xenon detector with significant reduction of the single and a few electron background. The experiment will improve the sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter by three orders of magnitude compared to the current best constraints.

Chiral terahertz wave emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs

As a fascinating topological phase of matter, Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent chiral terahertz emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs and demonstrate unprecedented manipulation over its polarization on a femtosecond timescale. Such polarization control is achieved via the colossal ultrafast photocurrents in TaAs arising from the circular or linear photogalvanic effect. We unravel that the chiral ultrafast photocurrents are attributed to the large band velocity changes when the Weyl fermions are excited from the Weyl bands to the high-lying bands. The photocurrent generation is maximized at near-IR frequency range close to 1.5 eV. Our findings provide an entirely new design concept for creating chiral photon sources using quantum materials and open up new opportunities for developing ultrafast opto-electronics using Weyl physics.

Unraveling photoinduced spin dynamics in topological insulator Bi2Se3

We report on time-resolved ultrafast optical spectroscopy study of the topological insulator (TI) Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We unravel that a net spin polarization can not only be generated using circularly polarized light via interband transitions between topological surface states (SSs), but also via transitions between SSs and bulk states. Our experiment demonstrates that tuning photon energy or temperature can essentially allow for photoexcitation of spin-polarized electrons to unoccupied topological SSs with two distinct spin relaxation times ($\sim$25 fs and $\sim$300 fs), depending on the coupling between SSs and bulk states. The intrinsic mechanism leading to such distinctive spin dynamics is the scattering in SSs and bulk states which is dominated by $E_g^2$ and $A_{1g}^1$ phonon modes, respectively. These findings are suggestive of novel ways to manipulate the photoinduced coherent spins in TIs.

Polaronic transport induced by competing interfacial magnetic order in a La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$/BiFeO$_{3}$ heterostructure

Using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, we show that polaronic behavior associated with interfacial antiferromagnetic order is likely the origin of tunable magnetotransport upon switching the ferroelectric polarity in a La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$/BiFeO$_{3}$ (LCMO/BFO) heterostructure. This is revealed through the difference in dynamic spectral weight transfer between LCMO and LCMO/BFO at low temperatures, which indicates that transport in LCMO/BFO is polaronic in nature. This polaronic feature in LCMO/BFO decreases in relatively high magnetic fields due to the increased spin alignment, while no discernible change is found in the LCMO film at low temperatures. These results thus shed new light on the intrinsic mechanisms governing magnetoelectric coupling in this heterostructure, potentially offering a new route to enhancing multiferroic functionality.

Time-resolved terahertz dynamics in thin films of the topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$

We use optical pump--THz probe spectroscopy at low temperatures to study the hot carrier response in thin Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films of several thicknesses, allowing us to separate the bulk from the surface transient response. We find that for thinner films the photoexcitation changes the transport scattering rate and reduces the THz conductivity, which relaxes within 10 picoseconds (ps). For thicker films, the conductivity increases upon photoexcitation and scales with increasing both the film thickness and the optical fluence, with a decay time of approximately 5 ps as well as a much higher scattering rate. These different dynamics are attributed to the surface and bulk electrons, respectively, and demonstrate that long-lived mobile surface photo-carriers can be accessed independently below certain film thicknesses for possible optoelectronic applications.

Coexistence of coupled magnetic phases in epitaxial TbMnO3 films revealed by ultrafast optical spectroscopy

Ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy is used to reveal the coexistence of coupled antiferromagnetic/ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders in multiferroic TbMnO3 films through their time domain signatures. Our observations are explained by a theoretical model describing the coupling between reservoirs with different magnetic properties. These results can guide researchers in creating new kinds of multiferroic materials that combine coupled ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties in one compound.

Mechanical and Electronic Properties of Ferromagnetic GaMnAs Using Ultrafast Coherent Acoustic Phonons

Ultrafast two-color pump-probe measurements, involving coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, have provided information simultaneously on the mechanical properties and on the electronic structure of ferromagnetic GaMnAs. The elastic constant C11 of Ga1-xMnxAs (0.03<x<0.07) are observed to be systematically smaller than those of GaAs. Both C11 and Vs of GaMnAs are found to increase with temperature (78 K<T<295 K), again in contrast to the opposite behavior in GaAs. In addition, the fundamental bandgap (at E0 critical point) of Ga1-xMnxAs is found to shift slightly to higher energies with Mn concentration.

Measurement of graphite tight-binding parameters using high field magneto-reflectance

frared reflectance spectroscopy at 4K in fields up to 31T. Both Schrödinger-like (K-point) and Dirac-like (H-point) Landau level transitions have been observed, and their magnetic field dispersion are analyzed by a newly-derived limiting case of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model. The values of the band parameters are evaluated without using sophisticated conductivity peak lineshape analysis. In this work, several less-explored band parameters are determined from the experimental results and they are known to result in electron-hole asymmetry and the opening of an energy gap between the electron and hole bands in multilayer and bilayer graphene systems.

Ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics in Bi2Se3 crystals

Ultrafast time-resolved differential reflectivity of Bi2Se3 crystals is studied using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Three distinct relaxation processes are found to contribute to the initial transient reflectivity changes. The deduced relaxation timescale and the sign of the reflectivity change suggest that electron-phonon interactions and defect-induced charge trapping are the underlying mechanisms for the three processes. After the crystal is exposed to air, the relative strength of these processes is altered and becomes strongly dependent on the excitation photon energy.
