Mn-site doping and its effect on inverted hysteresis and thermomagnetic irreversibility behavior of antiferromagnetic Mn$_5$Si$_3$ alloy

The structural and magnetic behavior of Mn-site doped intermetallic manganese silicide alloys of nominal compositions Mn$_{5-x}$A$_x$Si$_3$ ($x$ = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and A = Ni, Cr) have been investigated with a focus to the inverted hysteresis behavior and thermomagnetic irreversibility. Room temperature x-ray powder diffraction data confirm that all the doped alloys crystallize in hexagonal $D8_8$ type structure with space group $P6_3/mcm$. The doped alloys are found to show paramagnetic (PM) - collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM2) - noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM1) transitions during cooling from room temperature. A significant decrease in the critical values of both AFM1-AFM2 transition temperatures and fields have been observed with the increasing Ni/Cr concentration. Inverted hysteresis loop, field-induced arrest, and thermomagnetic arrest, the key features of the undoped Mn$_5$Si$_3$ alloy, are found to be significantly affected by the Mn-site doping and eventually vanishes with 4\% doping.

Multifunctional behavior of Mn-site doped antiferromagnetic Mn$_5$Si$_3$ alloys

Present work reports a detailed investigation on the magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric behavior of Ni and Cr-doped Mn$_5$Si$_3$ alloys with general formula Mn$_{5-x}$A$_x$Si$_3$ (where A = Ni/Cr; $x$ = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2). Both pure (undoped) and doped alloys show a reasonably large amount of magnetoresistance (MR). Doping at Mn-site, both by Ni and Cr, results in a monotonic decrease in MR values. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE), on the other hand, is found to be interesting, and all the alloys show both conventional and inverse MCE around the magneto-structural transition temperature. Among the two types of MCE observed, the inverse MCE is found to decrease with increasing doping concentration and consistent with the MR behavior, whereas doping results in a significant increase in conventional MCE values.

Robustness of helical magnetic structure under external pressure in Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy

We have investigated the detailed magnetic structure of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy of nominal composition MnNi$_{0.75}$Fe$_{0.25}$Ge by ambient and high pressure (6 kbar) neutron powder diffraction study. The alloy undergoes a martensitic phase transition between 230 K and 275 K. The low-temperature martensite phase orders antiferromagnetically with helical modulation of Mn-spins. At 1.5 K, the incommensurate propagation vector $\bf k$ is found to be (0.1790(1),0,0), and it remains almost unchanged with temperature under ambient condition. The Application of external pressure ($P$) reduces the martensitic transition temperature and results in a significant change in the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector. At 10 K, with 6 kbar of external pressure, the incommensurate magnetic structure of the alloy stabilizes with $\bf k$ = (0.1569(1),0,0). Interestingly, the strong temperature dependence of $\bf k$ in the presence of external $P$ has also been observed.

Giant Positive Magnetoresistance and field-induced metal insulator transition in Cr2NiGa

We report here the magneto-transport properties of the newly synthesized Heusler compound Cr2NiGa which crystallizes in a disordered cubic B2 structure belonging to Pm-3m space group. The sample is found to be paramagnetic down to 2 K with metallic character. On application of magnetic field, a significantly large increase in resistivity is observed which corresponds to magnetoresistance as high as 112% at 150 kOe of field at the lowest temperature. Most remarkably, the sample shows negative temperature coefficient of resistivity below about 50 K under the application of field gretare than or equal to 80 kOe, signifying a field-induced metal to `insulating' transition. The observed magnetoresistance follows Kohler's rule below 20 K indicating the validity of the semiclassical model of electronic transport in metal with a single relaxation time. A multi-band model for electronic transport, originally proposed for semimetals, is found to be appropriate to describe the magneto-transport behavior of the sample.

Hydrostatic pressure tuned magneto-structural transition and occurrence of pressure induced exchange bias effect in Mn$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$NiGe alloy

Magnetic and magneto-functional behavior of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy with nominal composition Mn$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$NiGe have been investigated in ambient as well as in high pressure condition. The alloy undergoes first order martensitic phase transition (MPT) around 200 K and also shows large conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE) ($ΔS$ $\sim$ -21 J/kg-K for magnetic field ($H$) changing from 0-50 kOe) around the transition in ambient condition. Application of external hydrostatic pressure ($P$) results a shift in MPT towards the lower temperature and a clear decrease in the saturation moment of the alloy at 5 K. The peak value of MCE is also found to decrease with increasing external $P$ ($\sim$ 18 J/kg-K decrease in $ΔS$ has been observed for $P$ = 12.5 kbar). The most interesting observation is the occurance of exchange bias effect (EBE) on application of external $P$. The competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction in presence of external $P$ plays the pivotal role towards the observation of $P$ induced EBE.

Multiple first order transitions and associated room temperature magneto-functionality in Ni2.048Mn1.312In0.64

Present work reports on the observation of multiple magnetic transitions in a Ni-excess ferromagnetic shape memory alloy with nominal composition Ni$_{2.048}$Mn$_{1.312}$In$_{0.64}$. The magnetization data reveal two distinct thermal hystereses associated with two different phase transitions at different temperature regions. The high temperature magnetic hysteresis is due to the martensitic phase transition whereas the low temperature hysteresis occurs around the magnetic anomaly signifying the transition from a paramagnetic-like state to the ferromagetic ground state within the martensite. Clear thermal hysteresis along with the sign of the curvatures of Arrott plot curves confirm the {\it first order nature of both the transitions}. In addition, the studied alloy is found to be functionally rich with the observation of large magnetoresistance (-45\% and -4\% at 80 kOe) and magnetocaloric effect (+16.7 J.kg$^{-1}$.K$^{-1}$ and -2.25 J.kg$^{-1}$.K$^{-1}$ at 50 kOe) around these two hysteresis regions (300 K and 195 K respectively).

Spin glass like ground state and observation of exchange bias in Mn_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}NiGe alloy

The ground-state magnetic properties of hexagonal equiatomic alloy of nominal composition Mn_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}NiGe were investigated through dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The alloy undergoes first order martensitic transition below 140 K with simultaneous development of long range ferromagnetic ordering from the high temperature paramagnetic phase. The undoped compound MnNiGe has an antiferromagnetic ground state and it shows martensitic like structural instability well above room temperature. Fe doping at the Mn site not only brings down the martensitic transition temperature, it also induces ferromagnetism in the sample. Our study brings out two important aspects regarding the sample, namley (i) the observation of exchange bias at low temperature, and (ii) spin glass like ground state which prevails below the martensitic and magnetic transition points. In addition to the observed usual relaxation behavior the spin glass state is confirmed by zero field cooled memory experiment, thereby indicating cooperative freezing of spin and/or spin clusters rather than uncorrelated dynamics of superparamagnetic like spin clusters. We believe that doping disorder can give rise to some islands of antiferromagnetic clusters in the otherwise ferromagnetic background which can produce interfacial frustration and exchange pinning responsible for spin glass and exchange bias effect. A comparison is made with doped rare-earth manganites where similar phase separation can lead to glassy ground state.
