Robustness of helical magnetic structure under external pressure in Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy

We have investigated the detailed magnetic structure of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy of nominal composition MnNi$_{0.75}$Fe$_{0.25}$Ge by ambient and high pressure (6 kbar) neutron powder diffraction study. The alloy undergoes a martensitic phase transition between 230 K and 275 K. The low-temperature martensite phase orders antiferromagnetically with helical modulation of Mn-spins. At 1.5 K, the incommensurate propagation vector $\bf k$ is found to be (0.1790(1),0,0), and it remains almost unchanged with temperature under ambient condition. The Application of external pressure ($P$) reduces the martensitic transition temperature and results in a significant change in the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector. At 10 K, with 6 kbar of external pressure, the incommensurate magnetic structure of the alloy stabilizes with $\bf k$ = (0.1569(1),0,0). Interestingly, the strong temperature dependence of $\bf k$ in the presence of external $P$ has also been observed.

A Review of Object Detection Models based on Convolutional Neural Network

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has become the state-of-the-art for object detection in image task. In this chapter, we have explained different state-of-the-art CNN based object detection models. We have made this review with categorization those detection models according to two different approaches: two-stage approach and one-stage approach. Through this chapter, it has shown advancements in object detection models from R-CNN to latest RefineDet. It has also discussed the model description and training details of each model. Here, we have also drawn a comparison among those models.

HI column density statistics of the cold neutral medium from absorption studies

Physical properties of the tiny scale structures in the cold neutral medium (CNM) of galaxies is a long-standing puzzle. Only a few lines of sights in our Galaxy have been studies with mixed results on the scale-invariant properties of such structures. Moreover, since these studies measure the variation of neutral hydrogen optical depth, they do not directly constrain the density structures. In this letter, we investigate the possibility of measuring the properties of density and spin temperature structures of the \HI from absorption studies of \HI. Our calculations show that irrespective of the thermal properties of the clouds, the scale structure of the \HI column density can be estimated, whereas, \HI absorption studies alone cannot shed much light on either the amplitude of the density fluctuations and their temperature structures. Detailed methodology and calculations with some fiducial examples are presented.

Magnetic and electric behaviors of DyMn$_2$O$_5$: effect of hole doping

DyMn$_2$O$_5$ is an intriguing multiferroic material showing multiple magnetic, electric and structural transitions. We present here the systematic study on the effect of Sr doping at the Dy site of DyMn$_2$O$_5$ through magnetic and dielectric measurements. Doping of divalent Sr at the Dy site is expected to enhance the Mn$^{4+}$:Mn$^{3+}$ ratio and it will also dilute the Dy site. Our study indicates large enhancement in the magnetic anomaly observed close to 43 K, which we believe to be related to the increased ferromagnetic correlations on Sr doping. Gradual increase in coercive field at 3 K with the Sr doping and decrease in bond length of adjacent Mn$^{4+}$ ions further support the enhancement of ferromagnetic corelations in the system. The parent sample shows a large magnetocaloric effect around 12 K, the magnitude of which found to decrease with increasing Sr concentration. The doping also enhances the anomaly at around 28 K observed in the dielectric permittivity versus temperature data, and this anomaly was earlier claimed to be associated with the spin reorientation as well as a simultaneous transition from one ferroelectric state to other. The electric orderings observed below 25 K are found to be susceptible to the applied magnetic field, and supports the view of Ratcliff II {\it et al.}(Phys. Rev. B {\bf 72}, 060407(R)(2005)) of concomitant changes in the magnetic structure associated with the multiple electric transitions.

Giant Positive Magnetoresistance and field-induced metal insulator transition in Cr2NiGa

We report here the magneto-transport properties of the newly synthesized Heusler compound Cr2NiGa which crystallizes in a disordered cubic B2 structure belonging to Pm-3m space group. The sample is found to be paramagnetic down to 2 K with metallic character. On application of magnetic field, a significantly large increase in resistivity is observed which corresponds to magnetoresistance as high as 112% at 150 kOe of field at the lowest temperature. Most remarkably, the sample shows negative temperature coefficient of resistivity below about 50 K under the application of field gretare than or equal to 80 kOe, signifying a field-induced metal to `insulating' transition. The observed magnetoresistance follows Kohler's rule below 20 K indicating the validity of the semiclassical model of electronic transport in metal with a single relaxation time. A multi-band model for electronic transport, originally proposed for semimetals, is found to be appropriate to describe the magneto-transport behavior of the sample.

Hydrostatic pressure tuned magneto-structural transition and occurrence of pressure induced exchange bias effect in Mn$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$NiGe alloy

Magnetic and magneto-functional behavior of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy with nominal composition Mn$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$NiGe have been investigated in ambient as well as in high pressure condition. The alloy undergoes first order martensitic phase transition (MPT) around 200 K and also shows large conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE) ($ΔS$ $\sim$ -21 J/kg-K for magnetic field ($H$) changing from 0-50 kOe) around the transition in ambient condition. Application of external hydrostatic pressure ($P$) results a shift in MPT towards the lower temperature and a clear decrease in the saturation moment of the alloy at 5 K. The peak value of MCE is also found to decrease with increasing external $P$ ($\sim$ 18 J/kg-K decrease in $ΔS$ has been observed for $P$ = 12.5 kbar). The most interesting observation is the occurance of exchange bias effect (EBE) on application of external $P$. The competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction in presence of external $P$ plays the pivotal role towards the observation of $P$ induced EBE.

Modelling the synchrotron light curves in recurrent novae V745 Scorpii and RS Ophiuchi

In this paper, we present the synchrotron light curve at 610 MHz from the recurrent nova V745 Sco following its outburst on 6 February 2014. The system has been detected and periodically monitored with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) since 9 February 2014 as part of the Galactic Nova with GMRT (GNovaG) project. The light curves are well fit by a model of synchrotron emitting region obscured by foreground thermal gas which eventually becomes optically thin to the low GMRT frequencies. We present the model fit to the 2014 data on V745 Sco and discuss it alongwith the model fit to the 1.4 GHz data of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi following its outburst in 1985.

Multiple first order transitions and associated room temperature magneto-functionality in Ni2.048Mn1.312In0.64

Present work reports on the observation of multiple magnetic transitions in a Ni-excess ferromagnetic shape memory alloy with nominal composition Ni$_{2.048}$Mn$_{1.312}$In$_{0.64}$. The magnetization data reveal two distinct thermal hystereses associated with two different phase transitions at different temperature regions. The high temperature magnetic hysteresis is due to the martensitic phase transition whereas the low temperature hysteresis occurs around the magnetic anomaly signifying the transition from a paramagnetic-like state to the ferromagetic ground state within the martensite. Clear thermal hysteresis along with the sign of the curvatures of Arrott plot curves confirm the {\it first order nature of both the transitions}. In addition, the studied alloy is found to be functionally rich with the observation of large magnetoresistance (-45\% and -4\% at 80 kOe) and magnetocaloric effect (+16.7 J.kg$^{-1}$.K$^{-1}$ and -2.25 J.kg$^{-1}$.K$^{-1}$ at 50 kOe) around these two hysteresis regions (300 K and 195 K respectively).

Probing the Fermi Surface of 3D Dirac Semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ through de Haas-van Alphen Technique

We have observed Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effect in the single crystals of three dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ upto 50 K, traceable at field as low as 2 T and 1 T, respectively. The values of Fermi wave vector, Fermi velocity, and effective cyclotron mass of charge carrier, calculated from both the techniques, are close to each other and match well with the earlier reports. However, the de Haas-van Alphen effect clearly reflects the existence of two different Fermi surface cross-sections along certain direction and a non-trivial Berry's phase which is the signature of 3D Dirac Fermion in Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$.

Spin glass like ground state and observation of exchange bias in Mn_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}NiGe alloy

The ground-state magnetic properties of hexagonal equiatomic alloy of nominal composition Mn_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}NiGe were investigated through dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The alloy undergoes first order martensitic transition below 140 K with simultaneous development of long range ferromagnetic ordering from the high temperature paramagnetic phase. The undoped compound MnNiGe has an antiferromagnetic ground state and it shows martensitic like structural instability well above room temperature. Fe doping at the Mn site not only brings down the martensitic transition temperature, it also induces ferromagnetism in the sample. Our study brings out two important aspects regarding the sample, namley (i) the observation of exchange bias at low temperature, and (ii) spin glass like ground state which prevails below the martensitic and magnetic transition points. In addition to the observed usual relaxation behavior the spin glass state is confirmed by zero field cooled memory experiment, thereby indicating cooperative freezing of spin and/or spin clusters rather than uncorrelated dynamics of superparamagnetic like spin clusters. We believe that doping disorder can give rise to some islands of antiferromagnetic clusters in the otherwise ferromagnetic background which can produce interfacial frustration and exchange pinning responsible for spin glass and exchange bias effect. A comparison is made with doped rare-earth manganites where similar phase separation can lead to glassy ground state.

The Role of Feedback in Shaping the Structure of the Interstellar Medium

We present an analysis of the role of feedback in shaping the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of simulated disc galaxies. For our analysis, we have used two realisations of two separate Milky Way-like (~L*) discs - one employing a conservative feedback scheme (MUGS), the other significantly more energetic (MaGICC). To quantify the impact of these schemes, we generate zeroth moment (surface density) maps of the inferred HI distribution; construct power spectra associated with the underlying structure of the simulated cold ISM, in addition to their radial surface density and velocity dispersion profiles. Our results are compared with a parallel, self-consistent, analysis of empirical data from THINGS (The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey). Single power-law fits (P~k^gamma) to the power spectra of the stronger-feedback (MaGICC) runs (over spatial scales corresponding to 0.5 kpc to 20 kpc) result in slopes consistent with those seen in the THINGS sample (gamma = -2.5). The weaker-feedback (MUGS) runs exhibit shallower power law slopes (gamma = -1.2). The power spectra of the MaGICC simulations are more consistent though with a two-component fit, with a flatter distribution of power on larger scales (i.e., gamma = -1.4 for scales in excess of 2 kpc) and a steeper slope on scales below 1 kpc (gamma = -5), qualitatively consistent with empirical claims, as well as our earlier work on dwarf discs. The radial HI surface density profiles of the MaGICC discs show a clear exponential behaviour, while those of the MUGS suite are essentially flat; both behaviours are encountered in nature, although the THINGS sample is more consistent with our stronger (MaGICC) feedback runs.

Anomalous thermal expansion of Sb$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator

We have investigated the temperature dependence of the linear thermal expansion along the hexagonal c axis ($ΔL$), in-plane resistivity ($ρ$), and specific heat ($C_p$) of the topological insulator Sb$_2$Te$_3$ single crystal. $ΔL$ exhibits a clear anomaly in the temperature region 204-236 K. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion $α$ decreases rapidly above 204 K, passes through a deep minimum at around 225 K and then increases abruptly in the region 225-236 K. $α$ is negative in the interval 221-228 K. The temperature dependence of both $α$ and $C_p$ can be described well by the Debye model from 2 to 290 K, excluding the region around the anomaly in $α$.
