Dynamics of open quantum spin systems: An assessment of the quantum master equation approach

Data of the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of a system containing one spin-1/2 particle interacting with a bath of up to 32 spin-1/2 particles is used to construct a Markovian quantum master equation describing the dynamics of the system spin. The procedure of obtaining this quantum master equation, which takes the form of a Bloch equation with time-independent coefficients, accounts for all non-Markovian effects in as much the general structure of the quantum master equation allows. Our simulation results show that, with a few rather exotic exceptions, the Bloch-type equation with time-independent coefficients provides a simple and accurate description of the dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle in contact with a thermal bath. A calculation of the coefficients that appear in the Redfield master equation in the Markovian limit shows that this perturbatively derived equation quantitatively differs from the numerically estimated Markovian master equation, the results of which agree very well with the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Equilibrium, Metastability, and Hysteresis in a Model Spin-crossover Material with Nearest-neighbor Antiferromagnetic-like and Long-range Ferromagnetic-like Interactions

Phase diagrams and hysteresis loops were obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and a mean-field method for a simplified model of a spin-crossover material with a two-step transition between the high-spin and low-spin states. This model is a mapping onto a square-lattice $S=1/2$ Ising model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic Husimi-Temperley (equivalent-neighbor) long-range interactions. Phase diagrams obtained by the two methods for weak and strong long-range interactions are found to be similar. However, for intermediate-strength long-range interactions, the Monte Carlo simulations show that tricritical points decompose into pairs of critical endpoints and mean-field critical points surrounded by horn-shaped regions of metastability. Hysteresis loops along paths traversing the horn regions are strongly reminiscent of thermal two-step transition loops with hysteresis, recently observed experimentally in several spin-crossover materials. We believe analogous phenomena should be observable in experiments and simulations for many systems that exhibit competition between local antiferromagnetic-like interactions and long-range ferromagnetic-like interactions caused by elastic distortions.

Quantum Decoherence at Finite Temperatures

We study measures of decoherence and thermalization of a quantum system $S$ in the presence of a quantum environment (bath) $E$. The whole system is prepared in a canonical thermal state at a finite temperature. Applying perturbation theory with respect to the system-environment coupling strength, we find that under common Hamiltonian symmetries, up to first order in the coupling strength it is sufficient to consider the uncoupled system to predict decoherence and thermalization measures of $S$. This decoupling allows closed form expressions for perturbative expansions for the measures of decoherence and thermalization in terms of the free energies of $S$ and of $E$. Numerical results for both coupled and decoupled systems with up to 40 quantum spins validate these findings.

Anisotropy of the molecular magnet V$_{15}$ spin Hamiltonian detected by high-field electron spin resonance

The molecular compound K$_6$[V$^{IV}_{15}$As$^{III}_6$O$_{42}$(H$_2$O)] $\cdot$ 8H$_2$O, in short V$_{15}$, has shown important quantum effects such as coherent spin oscillations. The details of the spin quantum dynamics depend on the exact form of the spin Hamiltonian. In this study, we present a precise analysis of the intramolecular interactions in V$_{15}$. To that purpose, we performed high-field electron spin resonance measurements at 120 GHz and extracted the resonance fields as a function of crystal orientation and temperature. The data are compared against simulations using exact diagonalization to obtain the parameters of the molecular spin Hamiltonian.

Proposal for an interference experiment to test the applicability of quantum theory to event-based processes

We analyze a single-particle Mach-Zehnder interferometer experiment in which the path length of one arm may change (randomly or systematically) according to the value of an external two-valued variable $x$, for each passage of a particle through the interferometer. Quantum theory predicts an interference pattern that is independent of the sequence of the values of $x$. On the other hand, corpuscular models that reproduce the results of quantum optics experiments carried out up to this date show a reduced visibility and a shift of the interference pattern depending on the details of the sequence of the values of $x$. The proposed experiment will show that: (1) it can be described by quantum theory, and thus not by the current corpuscular models, or (2) it cannot be described by quantum theory but can be described by the corpuscular models or variations thereof, or (3) it can neither be described by quantum theory nor by corpuscular models. Therefore, the proposed experiment can be used to determine to what extent quantum theory provides a description of observed events beyond the usual statistical level.

Quantum coherent negative bend resistance in InSb mesoscopic structures

Transport measurements were made on four-terminal devices fabricated from InSb/Al_xIn_(1-x)Sb quantum well structures at temperatures from 1.5 to 300K. Negative bend resistance, which is characteristic of ballistic transport, was observed in devices of channel widths 0.2 or 0.5 μm. We have improved upon the existing implementations of R-matrix theory in device physics by introducing boundary conditions that dramatically speed convergence. By comparison with R-matrix calculations, we show that the experimental observations are consistent with quantum coherent transport.

Quantum simulations and experiments on Rabi oscillations of spin qubits: intrinsic {\sl vs} extrinsic damping

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance experiments show that the decay of Rabi oscillations of ensembles of spin qubits depends noticeably on the microwave power and more precisely on the Rabi frequency, an effect recently called "driven decoherence". By direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the associated many-body system, we scrutinize the different mechanisms that may lead to this type of decoherence. Assuming the effects of dissipation to be negligible ($T_1=\infty$), it is shown that a system of dipolar-coupled spins with -- even weak-- random inhomogeneities is sufficient to explain the salient features of the experimental observations. Some experimental examples are given to illustrate the potential of the numerical simulation approach.

Electron spin resonance in S=1/2 antiferromagnets at high temperature

We study the electron spin resonance (ESR) of low-dimensional spin systems at high temperature, and test the Kubo-Tomita theory of exchange narrowing. In finite-size systems (molecular magnets), we found a double-peak resonance which strongly differs from the usual Lorentzian. For infinite systems, we have predictions for the linewidth and lineshape as a function of the anisotropy strength. For this, we have used an interpolation between a non-perturbative calculation of the memory function at short times (exact diagonalization) and the hydrodynamic spin-diffusion at long times. We show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropies generally induce a much larger linewidth than the exchange anisotropies in two dimensions, contrary to the one-dimensional case.

Magnetic strong coupling in a spin-photon system and transition to classical regime

We study the energy level structure of the Tavis-Cumming model applied to an ensemble of independent magnetic spins $s=1/2$ coupled to a variable number of photons. Rabi splittings are calculated and their distribution is analyzed as a functin of photon number $n_{\rm max}$ and spin system size $N$. A sharp transition in the distribution of the Rabi frequency is found at $n_{\rm max}\approx N$. The width of the Rabi frequency spectrum diverges as $\sqrt{N}$ at this point. For increased number of photons $n_{\rm max}>N$, the Rabi frequencies converge to a value proportional to $\sqrt{n_{\rm max}}$. This behavior is interpreted as analogous to the classical spin resonance mechanism where the photon is treated as a classical field and one resonance peak is expected. We also present experimental data demonstrating cooperative, magnetic strong coupling between a spin system and photons, measured at room temperature. This points towards quantum computing implementation with magnetic spins, using cavity quantum-electrodynamics techniques.

Local magnetic structures induced by inhomogeneities of the lattice in S=1/2 bond-alternating chains and response to time-dependent magnetic field with a random noise

We study effect of inhomogeneities of the lattice in the S=1/2 bond-alternating chain by using a quantum Monte Carlo method and an exact diagonalization method. We adopt a defect in the alternating order as the inhomogeneity and we call it `bond impurity'. Local magnetic structures induced by the bond impurities are investigated both in the ground state and at very low temperatures. The local magnetic structure can be looked on as an effective S=1/2 spin and the weakness of the interaction between the local structures causes the quasi-degenerate states in the low energy. We also investigate the force acting between bond impurities and find that the force is generally attractive. We also study the dynamical property of the local magnetic structure. While the local magnetic structure behaves as an isolated S=1/2 spin in the response to a time-dependent uniform field, it is found to be robust against the effect of a random noise applied at each site individually in the sweeping filed.

A novel intermediate phase in S=2 antiferromagnetic chains with uniaxial anisotropy

We study ground state properties of the $S=2$ quantum antiferromagnetic chain with a uniaxially anisotropic Hamiltonian: $ H = \sum_{j} [S_{j} \cdot S_{j+1} + D (S^{z}_{j})^2 ] $ by a Monte Carlo calculation. While it has been reported that a string order parameter vanishes exponentially at the isotropic Heisenberg point ($D=0$), we found it tends to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit around $D=1.2$. This implies that the model for $S=2$ has a novel intermediate phase between the Haldane phase and the large-$D$ phase, as was anticipated from the earlier argument based on the Valence-Bond-Solid picture.
