de Sitter Fractional Quantum Cosmology

We employ Riesz's fractional derivative into the Wheeler--DeWitt equation for a closed de Sitter geometry and obtain the no-boundary and tunneling wavefunctions. From the corresponding probability distributions, the event horizon of the nucleated universe can be a fractal surface with dimensions between $2\leq D<3$. Concretely, the tunneling wavefunction favors fractal dimensions less than $2.5$ and an accelerated power-law phase. Differently, the no-boundary proposal conveys fractal dimensions close to $3$, with the universe instead entering a decelerated phase. Subsequently, we extend our discussion towards (non-trivial compact) flat and open scenarios. Results suggest that given the probability of creation of a closed inflationary universe in the tunneling proposal is exponentially suppressed, a flat or an open universe becomes favored within fractional inflationary quantum universe.

Noncompactified Kaluza--Klein Gravity

We present a brief description of noncompactified higher-dimensional theories from the perspective of general relativity. More concretely, the Space-Time-Matter theory, or Induced Matter theory, and the reduction procedure used to construct the modified Brans-Dicke theory and the modified Sáez-Ballester theory are briefly explained. Finally, we apply the latter to the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological models in arbitrary dimensions and analyze the corresponding solutions.

Quantum Black hole--White hole entangled states

We investigate the quantum deformation of the Wheeler--DeWitt equation of a Schwarzchild black hole. Specifically, the quantum deformed black hole is a quantized model constructed from the quantum Heisenberg--Weyl $U_q(h_4)$ group. We show that the event horizon area and the mass are quantized, degenerate, and bounded. The degeneracy of states indicates entangled quantum black hole/white hole states. Accordingly, quantum deformation provides a new framework to examine Einstein--Rosen wormhole solutions. Besides, we obtain the mass, the temperature, and the entropy of the q-deformed quantum Schwarzschild black hole. We find an upper bound on the mass of a black hole/white hole pair. Also, at the quantum deformation level, the entropy of the black hole contains three parts: the usual Bekenstein--Hawking entropy, the logarithmic term, and a Cube of usual black hole entropy.

Resolution of challenging problems in quantum cosmology with electromagnetic radiation

We investigate the quantum cosmology of a closed spatially homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) minisuperspace model with electromagnetic radiation as matter content. We solve the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation by utilizing Riemann's zeta function regularization method. We demonstrate that the regularized vacuum energy of the electromagnetic field can overcome factor ordering, boundary conditions, and singularity problems.

Shape Invariant Potentials in Supersymmetric Quantum Cosmology

In this brief review, we comment on the concept of shape invariant potentials, which is an essential feature in many settings of $N=2$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics. To motivate its application within supersymmetric quantum cosmology, we present a case study to illustrate the value of this promising tool. Concretely, we take a spatially flat FRW model in the presence of a single scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity. Then, we extract the associated Schrödinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation, allowing for a particular scope of factor ordering. Subsequently, we compute the corresponding supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians, $H_1$ and $H_2$. Moreover, we point out how the shape invariance property can be employed to bring a relation among several factor orderings choices for our Schrödinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The ground state is retrieved, and the excited states easily written. Finally, the Hamiltonians, $H_1$ and $H_2$ are explicitly presented within a $N=2$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics framework.

Bohmian mechanics of Klein-Gordon equation via quantum metric and mass

The causal stochastic interpretation of relativistic quantum mechanics has the problems of superluminal velocities, motion backward in time and the incorrect non-relativistic limit. In this paper, according to the original ideas of de Broglie, Bohm and Takabayasi, we have introduced simultaneous quantum mass and quantum metric of curved spacetime to obtain a correct relativistic theory free of mentioned problems. \keywords{Bohmian mechanics; Klein-Gordon equation; quantum conformal transformations.

From Fractional Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Cosmology: An Overture

Fractional calculus is a couple of centuries old, but its development has been less embraced and it was only within the last century that a program of applications for physics started. Regarding quantum physics, it has been only in the previous decade or so that the corresponding literature resulted in a set of defying papers. In such a context, this manuscript constitutes a cordial invitation, whose purpose is simply to suggest, mostly through a heuristic and unpretentious presentation, the extension of fractional quantum mechanics to cosmological settings. Being more specific, we start by outlining a historical summary of fractional calculus. Then, following this motivation, a (very) brief appraisal of fractional quantum mechanics is presented, but where details (namely those of a mathematical nature) are left for literature perusing. Subsequently, the application of fractional calculus in quantum cosmology is introduced, advocating it as worthy to consider: if the progress of fractional calculus serves as an argument, indeed useful consequences will also be drawn (to cite from Leibnitz). In particular, we discuss different difficulties that may affect the operational framework to employ, namely the issues of minisuperspace covariance and fractional derivatives, for instance. An example of investigation is provided by means of a very simple model. Concretely, we restrict ourselves to speculate that with minimal fractional calculus elements, we may have a peculiar tool to inspect the flatness problem of standard cosmology. In summary, the subject of fractional quantum cosmology is herewith proposed, merely realized in terms of an open program constituted by several challenges.

Classical Universe emerging from quantum cosmology without horizon and flatness problems

We apply the complex de Broglie-Bohm formulation of quantum mechanics [1] to a spatially closed homogeneous and isotropic early Universe whose matter content are radiation and dust perfect fluids. We then show that an expanding classical Universe can emerge from an oscillating (with complex scale factor) quantum Universe without singularity. Furthermore, the Universe obtained in this process has no horizon or flatness problems.

Non-singular Brans-Dicke collapse in deformed phase space

We study the collapse process of a homogeneous perfect fluid (in FLRW background) with a barotropic equation of state in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory in the presence of phase space deformation effects. Such a deformation is introduced as a particular type of non-commutativity between phase space coordinates. For the commutative case, it has been shown in the literature [1], that the dust collapse in BD theory leads to the formation of a spacetime singularity which is covered by an event horizon. In comparison to general relativity (GR), the authors concluded that the final state of black holes in BD theory is identical to the GR case but differs from GR during the dynamical evolution of the collapse process. However, the presence of non-commutative effects influences the dynamics of the collapse scenario and consequently a non-singular evolution is developed in the sense that a bounce emerges at a minimum radius, after which an expanding phase begins. Such a behavior is observed for positive values of the BD coupling parameter. For large positive values of the BD coupling parameter, when non-commutative effects are present, the dynamics of collapse process differs from the GR case. Finally, we show that for negative values of the BD coupling parameter, the singularity is replaced by an oscillatory bounce occurring at a finite time, with the frequency of oscillation and amplitude being damped at late times.

Covariant extrinsic gravity and the geometric origin of dark energy

We construct the covariant or model independent induced Einstein-Yang-Mills field equations on a 4-dimensional brane embedded isometrically in an D-dimensional bulk space, assuming the matter fields are confined to the brane. Applying this formalism to cosmology, we derive the generalized Friedmann equations. We derive the density parameter of dark energy in terms of width of the brane, normal curvature radii and the number of extra large dimensions. We show that dark energy could actually be the manifestation of the local extrinsic shape of the brane. It is shown that the predictions of this model are in good agreement with observation if we consider an 11-dimensional bulk space.

Hawking temperature and the emergent cosmic space

The aim of this work is to model the evolution of the cosmic space based on thermodynamical parameters. The universe is considered to have an apparent horizon radius with a Kodama-Hayward temperature assigned to it. The method is founded on the fact proposed by Padmanabhan [1,2] that the subtraction of the surface and bulk degrees of freedom provides information on the cosmic space emergence. The fact of the matter is that in this approach the Raychaudhuri equation could even be obtained by the consideration of only thermodynamical parameters. As such, the standard general relativity is taken as the starting point where by implementing the standard cosmological equations we obtain a generalized evolutionary equation supporting emergence of the cosmic space. The method proposed in this work would provide basis for other cosmological models to have an emergent perspective.

Quantum cosmological intertwining: Factor ordering and boundary conditions from hidden symmetries

We explore the implications of hidden symmetries present in a particular quantum cosmological setting, extending the results reported in \cite{10,11}. In more detail, our case study is constituted by a spatially closed Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe, in the presence of a conformally coupled scalar field. The $su(1,1)$ hidden symmetries of this model, together with the Hamiltonian constraint, lead to the gauge invariance of its corresponding Bargmann indices. We subsequently show that some factor-ordering choices can be related to the allowed spectrum of Bargmann indices and hence, to the hidden symmetries. Moreover, the presence of those hidden symmetries also implies a set of appropriate boundary conditions to choose from. In summary, our results suggest that factor ordering and boundary conditions can be intertwined when a quantum cosmological model has hidden symmetries.

The laws of thermodynamics and information for emergent cosmology

The aim here is to provide a set of equations for cosmology in terms of information and thermodynamical parameters. The method we implement in order to describe the universe is a development of Padmanabhan\rq{}s approach which is based on the fact that emergence of the cosmic space is provided by the evolution of the cosmic time. In this line we obtain the Friedmann equation or its equivalent the conservation law in terms of information by the implementation of Laundauer\rq{}s principle or in other words the information loss/production rate. Hence, a self consistent description of the universe is provided in terms of thermodynamical parameters. This is due to the fact that in this work the role of information which is the most important actor of all times, has stepped in to cosmology. We provide a picture of the emergent cosmology merely based on the information theory. In addition, we introduce a novel entropy on the horizon, which can also generalize Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the asymptotic holographic principle.

Why the measured cosmological constant is small

In a quest to explain the small value of the today's cosmological constant, following the approach introduced in [1], we show that the theoretical value of cosmological constant is consistent with its observational value. In more detail, we study the Freidmann-Lama\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker cosmology embedded isometrically in an $11$-dimensional ambient space. The field equations determines $Λ$ in terms of other measurable fundamental constants. Specifically, it predicts that the cosmological constant measured today be $ΛL^2_{\text{Pl}}=2.56\times10^{-122}$, as observed.

Dark side of the universe in the Stephani cosmology

We investigate the late time acceleration of the universe in the context of the Stephani model. This solution generalizes those of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) in such a way that the spatial curvature is a function of of time. We show that the inhomogeneity of the models can lead to an accelerated evolution of the universe that is analogous to that obtained with FLRW models through a cosmological constant or any exotic component for matter.

Five dimensional cosmological traversable wormhole

In this paper, a traversable wormhole in the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model with one extra spacelike compact dimension is studied. We have chosen dynamical compactification as the evolution of the fifth dimension. In this respect, we study how the existence of the extra dimension, affect the behavior of the energy density, the shape function and the scale factor. It is shown that the total matter can be non-exotic and the violation of the weak energy condition can be avoided.

Holography from quantum cosmology

The Weyl-Wigner-Groenewold-Moyal formalism of deformation quantization is applied to the closed Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological model. We show that the phase space average for the surface of the apparent horizon is quantized in units of the Planck's surface, and that the total entropy of the universe is also quantized. Taking into account these two concepts, it is shown that 't Hooft conjecture on the cosmological holographic principle (CHP) in radiation and dust dominated quantum universes is satisfied as a manifestation of quantization. This suggests that the entire universe (not only inside the apparent horizon) can be seen as a two-dimensional information structure encoded on the apparent horizon.

On the relation between boundary proposals and hidden symmetries of the extended pre-big bang quantum cosmology

A framework associating quantum cosmological boundary conditions to minisuperspace hidden symmetries has been introduced in \cite{7}. The scope of the application was, notwithstanding the novelty, restrictive because it lacked a discussion involving realistic matter fields. Therefore, in the herein letter, we extend the framework scope to encompass elements from a scalar-tensor theory in the presence of a cosmological constant. More precisely, it is shown that hidden minisuperspace symmetries present in a pre-big bang model suggest a process from which boundary conditions can be selected.

Quantum cosmology, minimal length and holography

We study the effects of a generalized uncertainty principle on the classical and quantum cosmology of a closed Friedmann Universe whose matter content is either a dust or a radiation fluid. More concretely, assuming the existence of a minimal length, we show that the entropy will constitute a Dirac observable. In addition, 't Hooft conjecture on the cosmological holographic principle is also investigated. We describe how this holographic principle is satisfied for large values of a quantum number, $n$. This occurs when the entropy is computed in terms of the minimal area.

Cosmological quantum tunneling and holographic principle

The probable trajectory of the ground state wave function of the universe arises through a quantum tunneling by gravitational instantons. We calculate the quantum tunneling rate for a $n>2$ dimensional closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a positive cosmological constant. In four dimensions, by using of the holographic principle, the tunneling rate is related to the maximal entropy of the early universe after quantum tunneling.

Localization of gravity in brane world with arbitrary extra dimensions

We study the induced 4-dimensional linearized Einstein field equations in an m-dimensional bulk space by means of a confining potential. It is shown that in this approach the mass of graviton is quantized. The cosmological constant problem is also addressed within the context of this approach. We show that the difference between the values of the cosmological constant in particle physics and cosmology stems from our measurements in two different scales, small and large.

Late time acceleration in a deformed phase space model of dilaton cosmology

The effects of noncommutativity on the phase space of a dilatonic cosmological model is investigated. The existence of such noncommutativity results in a deformed Poisson algebra between the minisuperspace variables and their momenta conjugate. For an exponential dilaton potential, the exact solutions in the commutative and noncommutative cases, are presented and compared. We use these solutions to address the late time acceleration issue of cosmic evolution.

One-loop quantum cosmological correction to the gravitational constant in the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe

In this paper, we calculate the one-loop quantum cosmological corrections to the kink energy in the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe in which the fluctuation potential $V^{\prime\prime}$ has a shape invariance property. We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to implement our setup for describing quantum kink-like states. It is conjectured that the corrections lead to the renormalized gravitational constant.

preprint2010arXiv

One-loop quantum cosmological correction to the gravitational constant using the kink solution in de Sitter universe

In this paper, we show the equivalence between a classical static scalar field theory and the (closed) de Sitter cosmological model whose potential represents shape invariance property. Based on this equivalence, we calculate the one-loop quantum cosmological correction to the ground state energy of the kink-like solution in the (closed) de Sitter cosmological model in which the fluctuation potential $V^{\prime\prime}$ has a shape invariance property. It is shown that this type of correction, which yields a renormalized mass in the case of scalar field theory, may be {\it interpreted} as a renormalized gravitational constant in the case of (closed) de Sitter cosmological model. Keywords: One-loop correction; kink energy; shape invariance; zeta function regularization; de Sitter universe.

Quantum Black Hole in the Generalized Uncertainty Principle Framework

In this paper we study the effects of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) on canonical quantum gravity of black holes. Through the use of modified partition function that involves the effects of the GUP, we obtain the thermodynamical properties of the Schwarzschild black hole. We also calculate the Hawking temperature and entropy for the modification of the Schwarzschild black hole in the presence of the GUP.

Quantum mechanics and geodesic deviation in the brane world

We investigate the induced geodesic deviation equations in the brane world models, in which all the matter forces except gravity are confined on the 3-brane. Also, the Newtonian limit of induced geodesic deviation equation is studied. We show that in the first Randall-Sundrum model the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule is as a result of consistency between the geodesic and geodesic deviation equations. This indicates that the path of test particle is made up of integral multiples of a fundamental Compton-type unit of length $h/mc$.

preprint2008arXiv

Weyl-Dirac theory predictions on galactic scales

We consider the Weyl-Dirac theory within the framework of the weak field approximation and show that the resulting gravitational potential differs from that of Newtonian by a repulsive correction term increasing with distance. The scale of the correction term appears to be determined by the time variation rate of the gravitational coupling. It is shown that if the time variation rate of gravitational coupling is adopted from observational bounds, the theory can explain the rotation curves of typical spiral galaxies without resorting to dark matter. To check the consistency of our theoretical model with observation we use Likelihood analysis to find the best-fit values for the free parameters. The mean value for the most important free parameter, $β\times 10^{14} (1/yr)$, using the Top-Hat and Gaussian priors are $6.38^{+2.44}_{-3.46}_{-6.71}^{+6.18}$ and $5.72_{-1.18}^{+1.22}_{-2.69}^{+2.90}$, respectively. Although the interval for which $β$ is defined is wide, our results show that the goodness of the fit is, by and large, not sensitive to this quantity. The intergalactic effects and gravitational lensing of clusters of galaxies are estimated and seem to be consistent with observational data.

Compactification and signature transition in Kaluza-Klein spinor cosmology

We study the classical and quantum cosmology of a 4+1-dimensional space-time with a non-zero cosmological constant coupled to a self interacting massive spinor field. We consider a spatially flat Robertson-Walker universe with the usual scale factor $R(t)$ and an internal scale factor $a(t)$ associated with the extra dimension. For a free spinor field the resulting equations admit exact solutions, whereas for a self interacting spinor field one should resort to a numerical method for exhibiting their behavior. These solutions give rise to a degenerate metric and exhibit signature transition from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain. Such transitions suggest a compactification mechanism for the internal and external scale factors such that $a\sim R^{-1}$ in the Lorentzian region. The corresponding quantum cosmology and the ensuing Wheeler-DeWitt equation have exact solutions in the mini-superspace when the spinor field is free, leading to wavepackets undergoing signature change. The question of stabilization of the extra dimension is also discussed.
