de Sitter Fractional Quantum Cosmology

We employ Riesz's fractional derivative into the Wheeler--DeWitt equation for a closed de Sitter geometry and obtain the no-boundary and tunneling wavefunctions. From the corresponding probability distributions, the event horizon of the nucleated universe can be a fractal surface with dimensions between $2\leq D<3$. Concretely, the tunneling wavefunction favors fractal dimensions less than $2.5$ and an accelerated power-law phase. Differently, the no-boundary proposal conveys fractal dimensions close to $3$, with the universe instead entering a decelerated phase. Subsequently, we extend our discussion towards (non-trivial compact) flat and open scenarios. Results suggest that given the probability of creation of a closed inflationary universe in the tunneling proposal is exponentially suppressed, a flat or an open universe becomes favored within fractional inflationary quantum universe.

Noncompactified Kaluza--Klein Gravity

We present a brief description of noncompactified higher-dimensional theories from the perspective of general relativity. More concretely, the Space-Time-Matter theory, or Induced Matter theory, and the reduction procedure used to construct the modified Brans-Dicke theory and the modified Sáez-Ballester theory are briefly explained. Finally, we apply the latter to the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological models in arbitrary dimensions and analyze the corresponding solutions.

Shape Invariant Potentials in Supersymmetric Quantum Cosmology

In this brief review, we comment on the concept of shape invariant potentials, which is an essential feature in many settings of $N=2$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics. To motivate its application within supersymmetric quantum cosmology, we present a case study to illustrate the value of this promising tool. Concretely, we take a spatially flat FRW model in the presence of a single scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity. Then, we extract the associated Schrödinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation, allowing for a particular scope of factor ordering. Subsequently, we compute the corresponding supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians, $H_1$ and $H_2$. Moreover, we point out how the shape invariance property can be employed to bring a relation among several factor orderings choices for our Schrödinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The ground state is retrieved, and the excited states easily written. Finally, the Hamiltonians, $H_1$ and $H_2$ are explicitly presented within a $N=2$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics framework.

From Fractional Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Cosmology: An Overture

Fractional calculus is a couple of centuries old, but its development has been less embraced and it was only within the last century that a program of applications for physics started. Regarding quantum physics, it has been only in the previous decade or so that the corresponding literature resulted in a set of defying papers. In such a context, this manuscript constitutes a cordial invitation, whose purpose is simply to suggest, mostly through a heuristic and unpretentious presentation, the extension of fractional quantum mechanics to cosmological settings. Being more specific, we start by outlining a historical summary of fractional calculus. Then, following this motivation, a (very) brief appraisal of fractional quantum mechanics is presented, but where details (namely those of a mathematical nature) are left for literature perusing. Subsequently, the application of fractional calculus in quantum cosmology is introduced, advocating it as worthy to consider: if the progress of fractional calculus serves as an argument, indeed useful consequences will also be drawn (to cite from Leibnitz). In particular, we discuss different difficulties that may affect the operational framework to employ, namely the issues of minisuperspace covariance and fractional derivatives, for instance. An example of investigation is provided by means of a very simple model. Concretely, we restrict ourselves to speculate that with minimal fractional calculus elements, we may have a peculiar tool to inspect the flatness problem of standard cosmology. In summary, the subject of fractional quantum cosmology is herewith proposed, merely realized in terms of an open program constituted by several challenges.

Late time cosmic acceleration in modified Sáez-Ballester theory

We establish an extended version of the modified Sáez-Ballester (SB) scalar-tensor theory in arbitrary dimensions whose energy momentum tensor as well as potential are pure geometrical quantities. This scenario emerges by means of two scalar fields (one is present in the SB theory and the other is associated with the extra dimension) which widens the scope of the induced-matter theory. Moreover, it bears a close resemblance to the standard Sáez-Ballester scalar-tensor theory, as well as other alternative theories to general relativity, whose construction includes either a minimally or a non-minimally coupled scalar field. However, contrary to those theories, in our framework the energy momentum tensor and the scalar potential are not added by hand, but instead are dictated from the geometry. Concerning cosmological applications, our herein contribution brings a new perspective. We firstly show that the dark energy sector can be naturally retrieved within a strictly geometric perspective, and we subsequently analyze it. Moreover, our framework may provide a hint to understand the physics of lower gravity theories.

Classical Universe emerging from quantum cosmology without horizon and flatness problems

We apply the complex de Broglie-Bohm formulation of quantum mechanics [1] to a spatially closed homogeneous and isotropic early Universe whose matter content are radiation and dust perfect fluids. We then show that an expanding classical Universe can emerge from an oscillating (with complex scale factor) quantum Universe without singularity. Furthermore, the Universe obtained in this process has no horizon or flatness problems.

Non-singular Brans-Dicke collapse in deformed phase space

We study the collapse process of a homogeneous perfect fluid (in FLRW background) with a barotropic equation of state in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory in the presence of phase space deformation effects. Such a deformation is introduced as a particular type of non-commutativity between phase space coordinates. For the commutative case, it has been shown in the literature [1], that the dust collapse in BD theory leads to the formation of a spacetime singularity which is covered by an event horizon. In comparison to general relativity (GR), the authors concluded that the final state of black holes in BD theory is identical to the GR case but differs from GR during the dynamical evolution of the collapse process. However, the presence of non-commutative effects influences the dynamics of the collapse scenario and consequently a non-singular evolution is developed in the sense that a bounce emerges at a minimum radius, after which an expanding phase begins. Such a behavior is observed for positive values of the BD coupling parameter. For large positive values of the BD coupling parameter, when non-commutative effects are present, the dynamics of collapse process differs from the GR case. Finally, we show that for negative values of the BD coupling parameter, the singularity is replaced by an oscillatory bounce occurring at a finite time, with the frequency of oscillation and amplitude being damped at late times.

Quantum cosmological intertwining: Factor ordering and boundary conditions from hidden symmetries

We explore the implications of hidden symmetries present in a particular quantum cosmological setting, extending the results reported in \cite{10,11}. In more detail, our case study is constituted by a spatially closed Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe, in the presence of a conformally coupled scalar field. The $su(1,1)$ hidden symmetries of this model, together with the Hamiltonian constraint, lead to the gauge invariance of its corresponding Bargmann indices. We subsequently show that some factor-ordering choices can be related to the allowed spectrum of Bargmann indices and hence, to the hidden symmetries. Moreover, the presence of those hidden symmetries also implies a set of appropriate boundary conditions to choose from. In summary, our results suggest that factor ordering and boundary conditions can be intertwined when a quantum cosmological model has hidden symmetries.

Gravitational Collapse of a Homogeneous Scalar Field in Deformed Phase Space

We study the gravitational collapse of a homogeneous scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity, in the presence of a particular type of dynamical deformation between the canonical momenta of the scale factor and of the scalar field. In the absence of such a deformation, a class of solutions can be found in the literature [R. Goswami and P. S. Joshi, arXiv:gr-qc/0410144], %\cite{JG04}, whereby a curvature singularity occurs at the collapse end state, which can be either hidden behind a horizon or be visible to external observers. However, when the phase-space is deformed, as implemented herein this paper, we find that the singularity may be either removed or instead, attained faster. More precisely, for negative values of the deformation parameter, we identify the emergence of a negative pressure term, which slows down the collapse so that the singularity is replaced with a bounce. In this respect, the formation of a dynamical horizon can be avoided depending on the suitable choice of the boundary surface of the star. Whereas for positive values, the pressure that originates from the deformation effects assists the collapse toward the singularity formation. In this case, since the collapse speed is unbounded, the condition on the horizon formation is always satisfied and furthermore the dynamical horizon develops earlier than when the phase-space deformations are absent. These results are obtained by means of a thoroughly numerical discussion.

On the relation between boundary proposals and hidden symmetries of the extended pre-big bang quantum cosmology

A framework associating quantum cosmological boundary conditions to minisuperspace hidden symmetries has been introduced in \cite{7}. The scope of the application was, notwithstanding the novelty, restrictive because it lacked a discussion involving realistic matter fields. Therefore, in the herein letter, we extend the framework scope to encompass elements from a scalar-tensor theory in the presence of a cosmological constant. More precisely, it is shown that hidden minisuperspace symmetries present in a pre-big bang model suggest a process from which boundary conditions can be selected.

Quantum cosmology, minimal length and holography

We study the effects of a generalized uncertainty principle on the classical and quantum cosmology of a closed Friedmann Universe whose matter content is either a dust or a radiation fluid. More concretely, assuming the existence of a minimal length, we show that the entropy will constitute a Dirac observable. In addition, 't Hooft conjecture on the cosmological holographic principle is also investigated. We describe how this holographic principle is satisfied for large values of a quantum number, $n$. This occurs when the entropy is computed in terms of the minimal area.

Wave Function for the Reissner-Nordström Black-Hole

We study the quantum behaviour of Reissner-Nordström (RN) black-holes interacting with a complex scalar field. A Maxwell field is also present. Our analysis is based on M. Pollock's method and is characterized by solving a Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the proximity of an apparent horizon of the RN space-time. Subsequently, we obtain a wave-function $Ψ_{RN}[M, Q]$ representing the RN black-hole when its charge, $\mid Q \mid$, is small in comparison with its mass, $M$. We then compare quantum-mechanically the cases of $(i)$ $Q = 0$ and $(ii)$ $M \geq \mid Q \mid \neq 0 $. A special emphasis is given to the evolution of the mass-charge rate affected by Hawking radiation.

Supersymmetric Quantum Cosmology --- Shaken not stirred

The canonical quantization of $N=1$ and $N=2$ supergravity theories is reviewed in this report. A special emphasis is given to the topic of supersymmetric Bianchi class-A and FRW minisuperspaces, namely in the presence of supermatter fields. The quantization of the general theory (including supermatter) is also contemplated. The issue of quantum physical states is subsequently analysed. A discussion on further research problems still waiting to be addressed is included. An extensive and updated bibliography concludes this review.

Quantization of the Bianchi type-IX model in N=1 Supergravity in the Presence of Supermatter

The general theory of N=1 supergravity with supermatter is applied to a Bianchi type IX diagonal model. The supermatter is constituted by a complex scalar field and its spin-$1\over 2$ fermionic partners. The Kähler geometry is chosen to be a two-dimensional flat one. The Lorentz invariant Ansatz for the wave function of the universe is taken to be as simple as possible in order to obtain {\it new} solutions. The set of differential equations derived from the quantum constraints are analysed in two different cases: if the supermatter terms include an analytical potential or not. In the latter the wave function is found to have a simple form.

The Case of the Missing Wormhole State

The issue concerning the existence of wormhole states in locally supersymmetric minisuperspace models with matter is addressed. Wormhole states are apparently absent in models obtained from the more general theory of N=1 supergravity with supermatter. A Hartle-Hawking type solution can be found, even though some terms (which are scalar field dependent) cannot be determined in a satisfactory way. A possible cause is investigated here. As far as the wormhole situation is concerned, we argue here that the type of Lagrange multipliers and fermionic derivative ordering one uses may make a difference. A proposal is made for supersymmetric quantum wormholes to also be invested with a Hilbert space structure, associated with a maximal analytical extension of the corresponding minisuperspace.

Decoherence of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Geometries in the Presence of Massive Vector Fields with U(1) or SO(3) Global Symmetries

Retrieval of classical behaviour in quantum cosmology is usually discussed in the framework of {\em midi}superspace models in the presence of scalar fields and the inhomogeneous modes corresponding either to gravitational or scalar fields. In this work, we propose an alternative model to study the decoherence of homogeneous and isotropic geometries where the scalar field is replaced by a massive vector field with a global internal symmetry. We study here the cases with $U(1)$ and $SO(3)$ global internal symmetries. The presence of a mass term breaks the conformal invariance and allows for the longitudinal modes of the spin-1 field to be present in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. In the case of the U(1) global internal symmetry, we have only one single ``classical'' degree of freedom while in the case of the SO(3) global symmetry, we are led to consider a simple two-dimensional minisuperspace model. These minisuperspaces are shown to be equivalent to a set of coupled harmonic oscillators where the kinetic term of the longitudinal modes has a coefficient proportional to the inverse of the scale factor. The conditions for a suitable decoherence process and correlations between coordinate and momenta are established. The validity of the semi-classical Einstein equations when massive vector fields (Abelian and non-Abelian) are present is also discussed.
