Search for eta mesic 3He with the WASA-at-COSY facility in the pd-> 3He 2gamma and pd-> 3He 6gamma reactions

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an $η$ meson and $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the $η$-mesic nucleus decay, the $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 2γ$ and $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 6γ$ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of $η$ meson bound in $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to an $^3$He-$η$ nucleus width $Γ$ above 20 MeV and binding energy $B_s$ between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the $η$-mesic $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus formation followed by the $η$ meson decay which varies between $2$ nb and $15$ nb depending on possible bound state parameters.

First application of superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters to hadronic-atom x-ray spectroscopy

High-resolution pionic-atom x-ray spectroscopy was performed with an x-ray spectrometer based on a 240-pixel array of superconducting transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters at the piM1 beam line of the Paul Scherrer Institute. X-rays emitted by pionic carbon via the 4f->3d transition and the parallel 4d->3p transition were observed with a full-width-at-half-maximum energy resolution of 6.8 eV at 6.4 keV. Measured x-ray energies are consistent with calculated electromagnetic values which considered the strong-interaction effect assessed via the Seki-Masutani potential for the 3p energy level, and favor the electronic population of two filled 1s electrons in the K-shell. Absolute energy calibration with an uncertainty of 0.1 eV was demonstrated under a high-rate hadron beam condition of 1.45 MHz. This is the first application of a TES spectrometer to hadronic-atom x-ray spectroscopy and is an important milestone towards next-generation high-resolution kaonic-atom x-ray spectroscopy.

Formation of eta'(958) Meson Bound States by the 6Li(gamma,d) reaction

We have investigated the 6Li(gamma,d) reaction theoretically for the formation of the eta'(958) mesic nucleus close to the recoilless kinematics. We have developed the theoretical formula and reported the quantitative results of the formation spectra for various cases in this article. We have found that the formation cross sections are reduced by the effects of the fragile deuteron form factor.

Measurement of excitation spectra in the ${}^{12}$C$(p,d)$ reaction near the $η'$ emission threshold

Excitation spectra of $^{11}$C were measured in the $^{12}$C$(p,d)$ reaction near the $η'$ emission threshold. A proton beam extracted from the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI with an incident energy of 2.5 GeV impinged on a carbon target. The momenta of deuterons emitted at 0 degrees were precisely measured with the fragment separator FRS operated as a spectrometer. In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound $η'$ mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures were observed associated with the formation of bound states. The spectra were analyzed to set stringent constraints on the formation cross section and on the hitherto barely-known $η'$-nucleus interaction.

Experimental constraints on the $ω$-nucleus real potential

In a search for $ω$ mesic states, the production of $ω$-mesons in coincidence with forward going protons has been studied in photon induced reactions on $^{12}$C for incident photon energies of 1250 - 3100 MeV. The $π^0 γ$ pairs from decays of bound or quasi-free $ω$-mesons have been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system in coincidence with protons registered in the MiniTAPS forward array. Structures in the total energy distribution of the $π^0 γ$ pairs, which would indicate the population and decay of bound $ω~^{11}$B states, are not observed. The $π^0 γ$ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the $ω$-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part $V_0$ of the $ω~^{11}$B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with $V_0(ρ=ρ_0) = -15\pm$ 35(stat) $\pm$20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV.

Formation of eta-prime(958)-mesic nuclei by (p,d) reaction

We calculate theoretically the formation spectra of eta'(958)-nucleus systems in the (p,d) reaction for the investigation of the in-medium modification of the eta' mass. We show the comprehensive numerical calculations based on a simple form of the eta' optical potential in nuclei with various potential depths. We conclude that one finds an evidence of possible attractive interaction between eta' and nucleus as peak structure appearing around the eta' threshold in light nuclei such as 11C when the attractive potential is stronger than 100 MeV and the absorption width is of order of 40 MeV or less. Spectroscopy of the (p,d) reaction is expected to be performed experimentally at existing facilities, such as GSI. We also estimate the contributions from the omega and phi mesons, which have masses close to the eta' meson, concluding that the observation of the peak structure of the eta'-mesic nuclei is not disturbed although their contributions may not be small.

Nuclear density probed by Kaon-Nucleus systems and Kaon-Nucleus interaction

Effective nuclear densities probed by kaon- and anti-kaon-nucleus systems are studied theoretically both for bound and low energy scattering states. As for the anti-kaon bound states, we investigate kaonic atoms. We find that the effective density depends on the atomic states significantly and we have the possibility to obtain the anti-kaon properties at various nuclear densities by observing the several kaonic atom states. We also find the energy dependence of the probed density by kaon and anti-kaon scattering states. We find that the study of the effective nuclear density will help to find the proper systems to investigate the meson properties at various nuclear densities.

eta-prime nucleus optical potential and possible eta-prime bound states

Starting from a recent model of the eta'N interaction, we evaluate the eta'-nucleus optical potential, including the contribution of lowest order in density, t rho/2m_eta', together with the second order terms accounting for eta' absorption by two nucleons. We also calculate the formation cross section of the eta' bound states from (pi+,p) reactions on nuclei. The eta'-nucleus potential suffers from uncertainties tied to the poorly known eta'N interaction, which can be partially constrained by the experimental modulus of the eta'N scattering length and/or the recently measured transparency ratios in eta' nuclear photoproduction. Assuming an attractive interaction and taking the claimed experimental value |a_eta'N| = 0.1 fm, we obtain a eta' optical potential in nuclear matter at saturation density of V_eta' = -(8.7 + 1.8i) MeV, not attractive enough to produce eta' bound states in light nuclei. Larger values of the scattering length give rise to deeper optical potentials, with moderate enough imaginary parts. For a value |a_eta'| = 0.3 fm, which can still be considered to lie within the uncertainties of the experimental constraints, the spectra of light and medium nuclei show clear structures associated to eta'-nuclear bound states and to threshold enhancements in the unbound region.

Formation of Heavy Meson Bound States by Two Nucleon Pick-up Reactions

We develop a model to evaluate the formation rate of the heavy mesic nuclei in the two nucleon pick-up reactions, and apply it to the $^6$Li target cases for the formation of heavy meson-$α$ bound states, as examples. The existence of the quasi-deuteron in the target nucleus is assumed in this model. It is found that the mesic nuclei formation in the recoilless kinematics is possible even for heavier mesons than nucleon in the two nucleon pick-up reactions. We find the formation rate of the meson-$α$ bound states can be around half of the elementary cross sections at the recoilless kinematics with small distortions.

Pionic Atom Spectroscopy in the (d,3He) reaction at finite angles

We study the formation of deeply bound pionic atoms in the (d,3He) reactions theoretically and show the energy spectra of the emitted 3He at finite angles, which are expected to be observed experimentally. We find that the different combinations of the pion-bound and neutron-hole states dominate the spectra at different scattering angles because of the matching condition of the reaction. We conclude that the observation of the (d,3He) reaction at finite angles will provide the systematic information of the pionic bound states in each nucleus and will help to develop the study of the pion properties and the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.

Selected topics on Hadrons in Nuclei

In this talk we report on selected topics on hadrons in nuclei. The first topic is the renormalization of the width of the $Λ(1520)$ in a nuclear medium. This is followed by a short update of the situation of the $ω$ in the medium. The investigation of the properties of $\bar{K}$ in the nuclear medium from the study of the $(K_{flight},p)$ reaction is also addressed, as well as properties of X,Y,Z charmed and hidden charm resonances in a nuclear medium. Finally we address the novel issue of multimeson states.

Experimental status of deeply bound kaonic states in nuclei

We review recent claims of the existence of deeply bound kaonic states in nuclei. Also we study in details the (K-,p) reaction on C12 with 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, based on which a deep kaon nucleus optical potential was claimed in [1]. In our Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction we include not only the quasi-elastic K- p scattering, as in [1], but also K- absorption by one and two nucleons followed by the decay of the hyperon in pi N, which can also produce strength in the region of interest. The final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary particles on their way out of the nucleus is also considered. We will show that all these additional mechanisms allow us to explain the observed spectrum with a "standard" shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models. [1] T. Kishimoto et al., Prog. Theor. Phys. 118, 181 (2007).

Formation of $ϕ$ mesic nuclei

We study the structure and formation of the $ϕ$ mesic nuclei to investigate the in-medium modification of the $ϕ$-meson spectral function at finite density. We consider (${\bar p},ϕ$), ($γ,p$) and ($π^-,n$) reactions to produce a $ϕ$-meson inside the nucleus and evaluate the effects of its medium modifications to the reaction cross sections. We also estimate the consequences of the uncertainties of the ${\bar K}$ selfenergy in medium to the $ϕ$-nucleus interaction. We find that it may be possible to see a peak structure in the reaction spectra for the strong attractive potential cases. On the other hand, for strong absorptive interaction cases with relatively weak attractions, it is very difficult to observe clear peaks and we may need to know the spectrum shape in a wide energy region to deduce the properties of $ϕ$.

Proton emission off nuclei induced by kaons in flight

We study the (K-,p) reaction on nuclei with a 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, paying a special attention at the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deeply attractive kaon nucleus optical potential. Our model describes the nuclear reaction in the framework of a local density approach and the calculations are performed following two different procedures: one is based on a many-body method using the Lindhard function and the other one is based on a Monte Carlo simulation. While both procedures coincide when it comes to consider the contribution of kaon quasi-elastic scattering, the simulation method offers more flexibility since it allows us to account for other processes which also contribute to the proton spectra, such as K- absorption by one and two nucleons producing hyperons. The simulation also considers final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary and secondary particles on their way out of the nucleus, as well as the weak decay of the produced hyperons into (pi N). We find that this kaon in-flight reaction is not well suited to determine the kaon optical potential due, essentially, to the limited sensitivity of the cross section to its strength, but also to unavoidable uncertainties in the contribution from other processes. We also simulate the experimental requirement of having, together with the energetic proton, at least one charged particle detected in the decay counter surrounding the target, and find that the shape of the original cross section is appreciably distorted. We conclude that the new mechanisms, not considered in the analysis of the original experiment, allow us to explain the observed spectrum with the shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models.

The (K-,p) reaction on C12 at KEK

We study the (K-,p) reaction on C12 with a kaon beam of 1 GeV momentum, paying a special attention to the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deep kaon nucleus optical potential [1]. The experiment looks for fast protons emitted from the absorption of in flight kaons by nuclei, but in coincidence with at least one charged particle in the decay counters sandwiching the target. The analysis of the data is done in [1] assuming that the coincidence requirement does not change the shape of the final spectra. However our detailed calculations show that this assumption doesn't hold, and, thus, the final conclusion of this experiment is doubtful. We perform Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction. The advantage of our method with respect to Green's function method used in [1] is that it allows to account not only for quasi-elastic K- p scattering, but also for the other processes which contribute to the proton spectra. We investigated the effect of the multi-scatterings and of the K- absorptions by one and two nucleons (K- N --> pi Y and K- N N --> Y N) followed by the decay of the hyperon in pi N. We show that all these mechanisms allow us to explain reasonably well the observed spectrum with standard shallow kaon nucleus optical potential, obtained in chiral models. [1] T. Kishimoto et al., Prog. Theor. Phys. 118, 181 (2007).

The (K-,p) reaction on nuclei with in-flight kaons

We perform a theoretical study of the spectrum of protons with kinetic energies of around 600 MeV, emitted following the interaction of 1 GeV/c kaons with nuclei. A recent experimental analysis of this (K-,p) reaction on 12C, based on the dominant quasielastic process, has suggested a deeply attractive kaon nucleus potential. Our Monte Carlo simulation considers, in addition, the one-and two-nucleon K- absorption processes producing hyperons that decay into πN pairs. We find that this kaon in-flight reaction is not well suited to determine the kaon optical potential due, essentially, to the limited sensitivity of the cross section to its strength, but also to unavoidable uncertainties from the coincidence requirement applied in the experiment. A shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models is perfectly compatible with the observed spectrum.

The $γγ$ decay of the $f_0(1370)$ and $f_2(1270)$ resonances in the hidden gauge formalism

Using recent results obtained within the hidden gauge formalism for vector mesons, in which the $f_0(1370)$ and $f_2(1270)$ resonances are dynamically generated resonances from the $ρρ$ interaction, we evaluate the radiative decay of these resonances into $γγ$. We obtain results for the width in good agreement with the experimental data for the $f_2(1270)$ state and a width about a factor five smaller for the $f_0(1370)$ resonance, which would agree with preliminary results from the Belle collaboration, hinting at an order of magnitude smaller width for this resonance than for the $f_2(1270)$.

Recent topics of mesic atoms and mesic nuclei -- $ϕ$ mesic nuclei exist ?--

We study $ϕ$-meson production in nuclei to investigate the in-medium modification of the $ϕ$-meson spectral function at finite density. We consider (${\bar p},ϕ$), ($γ,p$) and ($π^-,n$) reactions to produce a $ϕ$-meson inside the nucleus and evaluate the effects of the medium modifications to reaction cross sections. The structures of the bound states, $ϕ$-mesic nuclei, are also studied. For strong absorptive interaction cases, we need to know the spectrum shape in a wide energy region to deduce the properties of $ϕ$.

Charged current neutrino induced coherent pion production

We analyze the neutrino induced charged current coherent pion production at the energies of interest for recent experiments like K2K and MiniBooNE. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function, obtained solving the Klein Gordon equation with a microscopic optical potential, are included in the calculation. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications of the energy distributions of the final lepton and pion.

Neutrino-induced coherent pion production

We have investigated the neutrino induced coherent pion production reaction at the energies of interest for recent experiments like K2K and MiniBooNE. The model includes pion, nucleon and the Delta(1232) resonance. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function are taken into account. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications in the energy distributions of the final pion. The sensitivity of the results on the axial N-Delta coupling C5A(0) and the coherent fraction in neutral-current pi0 production are discussed.

Production of $Θ^+$ Hypernuclei with the $(K^+,π^+)$ reaction

We present results on the production of bound states of $Θ^+$ in nuclei using the $(K^+,π^+)$ reaction. By taking into account the states obtained within a wide range of strength of the $Θ^+$ nucleus optical potential, plus the possibility to replace different nucleons of the nucleus, we obtain an excitation spectra with clearly differentiated peaks. The magnitude of the calculated cross sections is well within reachable range.

Photon Absorption on a Neutron-Proton Pair in 3He and 4He

We have developed a phenomenological quasi-deuteron model to describe photodisintegration reactions of $^3$He and $^4$He at intermediate photon energies, and compared the results with experimental data obtained by TAGX group in which contributions from photon absorption by $pn$ pair were selectively observed. The data can be reproduced reasonably well, however there still remain certain discrepancies between calculated results and data.

Recent progress on the chiral unitary approach to meson meson and meson baryon interactions

We report on recent progress on the chiral unitary approach, analogous to the effective range expansion in Quantum Mechanics, which is shown to have a much larger convergence radius than ordinary chiral perturbation theory, allowing one to reproduce data for meson meson interaction up to 1.2 GeV. Applications to physical processes so far unsuited for a standard chiral perturbative approach are presented. Results for the extension of these ideas to the meson baryon sector are discussed, together with applications to kaons in a nuclear medium and $K^-$ atoms.

Formation of $η$-mesic Nuclei Using the Recoilless (d,$^3$He) Reaction

We propose to use the recoilless (d,$^3$He) reaction to produce $η$-mesic nuclei. This reaction has been used to observe deeply bound pionic states and proven to be powerful recently. We calculate $η$-mesic bound states in the nucleus using an optical potential and their formation cross section with the Green function method. Then, we carefully check the experimental feasibility. We find that $η$-mesic nuclei can be observed experimentally using the (d,$^3$He) reaction. We also mention the possibility to study the formation of $ω$-mesic nuclei.

Proton Elastic Scattering and Neutron Distribution of Unstable Nuclei

We study theoretically how we can determine the neutron density distributions of unstable nuclei from proton elastic scattering. We apply the relativistic impulse model to study the sensitivities of the observables to the density distributionswhich are expressed in Woods-Saxon form. We find that the both radius and diffuseness of densities can be determined from restricted elastic scattering data in principle. We think this result is helpful to design future experiments.

Formation of Deeply Bound 1s Pionic States in the $^{206}$Pb(d,$^3$He) Reaction

Recently, deeply bound pionic states were found experimentally in (d,$^3$He) reactions on $^{208}$Pb. The observed spectrum showed an excellent agreement with the DWIA calculation and the dominant peak was attributed to the pionic 2p state contribution. We studied theoretically $^{206}$Pb(d,$^3$He) reactions within the same model, and found that it is very likely to observe the pionic 1s state as an isolated peak in the $^{206}$Pb(d,$^3$He) reaction with feasible energy resolution and statistics.
