Anisotropic star models in the context of vanishing complexity

We use the definition of complexity for static and self--gravitating objects to build up three physical general relativistic anisotropic models fulfilling the vanishing complexity condition which serves to provide the extra information needed to close the system of Einstein field equations. We evaluate the physical acceptability of these models by testing some of the conditions that the geometric and material sector must satisfy in order to be considered as reasonable realistic models. We present the results of this analysis by asserting that the studied cases demonstrate to be feasible and stable under the chosen set of parameters. Furthermore, the $P_{\perp}=0$ and the Consenza's anisotropy models that seem not satisfying the expect conditions are also discussed.

A new formulation of compartmental epidemic modelling for arbitrary distributions of incubation and removal times

The paradigm for compartment models in epidemiology assumes exponentially distributed incubation and removal times, which is not realistic in actual populations. Commonly used variations with multiple exponentially distributed variables are more flexible, yet do not allow for arbitrary distributions. We present a new formulation, focussing on the SEIR concept that allows to include general distributions of incubation and removal times. We compare the solution to two types of agent-based model simulations, a spatially homogeneous one where infection occurs by proximity, and a model on a scale-free network with varying clustering properties, where the infection between any two agents occurs via their link if it exists. We find good agreement in both cases. Furthermore a family of asymptotic solutions of the equations is found in terms of a logistic curve, which after a non-universal time shift, fits extremely well all the microdynamical simulations. The formulation allows for a simple numerical approach; software in Julia and Python is provided.

Class I polytropes for anisotropic matter

In this work we study class I interior solutions supported by anisotropic polytropes. The generalized Lane--Emden equation compatible with the embedding condition is obtained and solved for a different set of parameters in both the isothermal and non--isothermal regimes. For completeness, the Tolman mass is computed and analysed to some extend. As a complementary study we consider the impact of the Karmarkar condition on the mass and the Tolman mass functions respectively. Comparison with other results in literature are discussed.

FLAG Review 2019

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to π$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $f_K/f_π$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ and $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for $D$- and $B$-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Finally, in this review we have added a new section reviewing results for nucleon matrix elements of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal.

A hidden-charm $S=-1$ pentaquark from the decay of $Λ_b$ into $J/ψηΛ$

The hidden charm pentaquark state $P_c(4450)$ observed recently by the LHCb collaboration may be of molecular nature, as advocated by some unitary approaches that also predict pentaquark partners in the strangeness $S=-1$ sector. In this work we argue that a hidden-charm strange pentaquark could be seen from the decay of the $Λ_b$, just as in the case of the non-strange $P_c(4450)$, but looking into the $J/ψηΛ$ decay mode and forming the invariant mass spectrum of $J/ψΛ$ pairs. In the model presented here, which assumes a standard weak decay topology and incorporates the hadronization process and final state interaction effects, we find the $J/ψηΛ$ final states to be populated with similar strength as the $J/ψK^- p$ states employed for the observation of the non-strange pentaquark. This makes the $Λ_ b \to J/ψηΛ$ decay to be an interesting process to observe a possible strange partner of the $P_c(4450)$ . We study the dependence of the $J/ψΛ$ mass spectra on various model ingredients and on the unknown properties of the strange pentaquark.

Sigma term and strangeness content of octet baryons

By using lattice QCD computations we determine the sigma terms and strangeness content of all octet baryons by means of an application of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. In addition to polynomial and rational expressions for the quark mass dependence of octet members, we use SU(3) covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory to perform the extrapolation to the physical up and down quark masses. Our N_f=2+1 lattice ensembles include pion masses down to about 190 MeV in large volumes (M_πL > 4), and three values of the lattice spacing. Our main results are the nucleon sigma term σ_{πN} = 39(4)(^{+18}_{-7}) and the strangeness content y_{N} = 0.20(7)(^{+13}_{-17}). Under the assumption of validity of covariant baryon χPT in our range of masses one finds y_{N} = 0.276(77)(^{+90}_{-62}).

The chiral S=-1 meson-baryon interaction with new constrains on the NLO contributions

We present a study of the $S=-1$ meson-baryon interaction, employing a chiral SU(3) Lagrangian up to next-to-leading order (NLO) and implementing unitarization in coupled channels. The parameters of the model have been fitted to a large set of experimental scattering data in different two-body channels, to threshold branching ratios, and to the precise SIDDHARTA value of the energy shift and width of kaonic hidrogen. In contrast to other groups, we have taken into consideration the $K^- p\to K^+Ξ^-, K^0Ξ^0$ reaction data, since we found in a previous work to be especially sensitive to the NLO parameters of the chiral Lagrangian. In the present work we also include the Born terms, which usually have very little effect, and find them to be non-negligible in the $K^- p\to KΞ$ channels, correspondingly causing significant modifications to the NLO parameters. We furthermore show that the importance of the Born terms becomes more visible in the isospin projected amplitudes of the $K^-p \to KΞ$ reactions. The measurement of processes that filter single isospin components, like the $K^0_L p \to K^+ Ξ^0$ reaction that could be measured at the proposed secondary $K^0_L$ beam at Jlab, would put valuable constraints on the chiral models describing the meson-baryon interaction in the $S=-1$ sector.

Workshop on Physics with Neutral Kaon Beam at JLab (KL2016) Mini-Proceedings

The KL2016 Workshop is following the Letter of Intent LoI12-15-001 "Physics Opportunities with Secondary KL beam at JLab" submitted to PAC43 with the main focus on the physics of excited hyperons produced by the Kaon beam on unpolarized and polarized targets with GlueX setup in Hall D. Such studies will broaden a physics program of hadron spectroscopy extending it to the strange sector. The Workshop was organized to get a feedback from the community to strengthen physics motivation of the LoI and prepare a full proposal. Prospects and status of quark mass renormalization in three-flavour QCD

We present the current status of a revised strategy to compute the running of renormalized quark masses in QCD with three flavours of massless O(a) improved Wilson quarks. The strategy employed uses the standard finite-size scaling method in the Schrödinger functional and accommodates for the non-perturbative scheme-switch which becomes necessary at intermediate renormalized couplings as discussed in [arXiv:1411.7648].

Reanalysis of lattice QCD spectra leading to the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}^*(2460)$

We perform a reanalysis of the energy levels obtained in a recent lattice QCD simulation, from where the existence of bound states of $KD$ and $KD^*$ are induced and identified with the narrow $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}^*(2460)$ resonances. The reanalysis is done in terms of an auxiliary potential, employing a single-channel basis $KD^{(*)}$, and a two-channel basis $KD^{(*)}, ηD_s^{(*)}$. By means of an extended Lüscher method we determine poles of the continuum $t$-matrix, bound by about 40 MeV with respect to the $KD$ and $KD^*$ thresholds, which we identify with the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}^*(2460)$ resonances. Using a sum rule that reformulates Weinberg compositeness condition we can determine that the state $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ contains a $KD$ component in an amount of about 70%, while the state $D_{s1}^*(2460)$ contains a similar amount of $KD^*$. We argue that the present lattice simulation results do not still allow us to determine which are the missing channels in the bound state wave functions and we discuss the necessary information that can lead to answer this question.

Symanzik improvement of the gradient flow in lattice gauge theories

We apply the Symanzik improvement programme to the 4+1-dimensional local re-formulation of the gradient flow in pure $SU(N)$ lattice gauge theories. We show that the classical nature of the flow equation allows to eliminate all cutoff effects at $\mathcal O(a^2)$ which originate either from the discretized gradient flow equation or from the gradient flow observable. All the remaining $\mathcal O(a^2)$ effects can be understood in terms of local counterterms at the zero flow time boundary. We classify these counterterms and provide a complete set as required for on-shell improvement. Compared to the 4-dimensional pure gauge theory only a single additional counterterm is required, which corresponds to a modified initial condition for the flow equation. A consistency test in perturbation theory is passed and allows to determine all counterterm coefficients to lowest non-trivial order in the coupling.

The $\bar{K} N \rightarrow K Ξ$ reaction in coupled channel chiral models up to next-to-leading order

The meson-baryon interaction in s-wave in the strangeness S=-1 sector has been studied, employing a chiral SU(3) Lagrangian up to next-to-leading order (NLO) and implementing unitarization in coupled channels. The parameters of the Lagrangian have been fitted to a large set of experimental data in different two-body channels, paying special attention to the $\bar{K} N \rightarrow K Ξ$ reaction, which is particularly sensitive to the NLO terms. With the aim of improving the model in the $KΞ$ production channels, effects of the high spin hyperon resonances $Σ(2030)$ and $Σ(2250)$ have been taken into account phenomenologically.

The $Λ_b \to J/ψ~ K ~ Ξ$ decay and the higher order chiral terms of the meson baryon interaction

We study the weak decay of the $Λ_b$ into $ J/ψ~ K ~ Ξ$ and $J/ψ~ η~ Λ$ states, and relate these processes to the $Λ_b \to J/ψ~ \bar K ~N$ decay mode. The elementary weak transition at the quark level proceeds via the creation of a $J/ψ$ meson and an excited $sud$ system with $I=0$, which upon hadronization leads to $\bar K N$ or $ηΛ$ pairs. These states undergo final state interaction in coupled channels and produce a final meson-baryon pair. The $K Ξ$ state only occurs via rescattering, hence making the $Λ_b \to J/ψ~ K ~ Ξ$ process very sensitive to the details of the meson-baryon interaction in strangeness $S=-1$ and isospin $I=0$. We show that the corresponding invariant mass distribution is dominated by the next-to-leading order terms of the chiral interaction. The $I=0$ selectivity of this decay, and its large sensitivity to the higher order terms, makes its measurement very useful and complementary to the $K^- p \to K Ξ$ cross section data. The rates of the $Λ_b \to J/ψ~ K ~ Ξ$ and $Λ_b \to J/ψ~ η~ Λ$ invariant mass distributions are sizable compared to those of the $Λ_b \to J/ψ~ \bar K ~N$ decay, which is measured experimentally, thus, we provide arguments for an experimental determination of these decay modes that will help us understand better the chiral dynamics at higher energies.

Heliostat blocking and shadowing efficiency in the video-game era

Blocking and shadowing is one of the key effects in designing and evaluating a thermal central receiver solar tower plant. Therefore it is convenient to develop efficient algorithms to compute the area of an heliostat blocked or shadowed by the rest of the field. In this paper we explore the possibility of using very efficient clipping algorithms developed for the video game and imaging industry to compute the blocking and shadowing efficiency of a solar thermal plant layout. We propose an algorithm valid for arbitrary position, orientation and size of the heliostats. This algorithm turns out to be very accurate, free of assumptions and fast. We show the feasibility of the use of this algorithm to the optimization of a solar plant by studying a couple of examples in detail.

Isospin splittings in the light baryon octet from lattice QCD and QED

While electromagnetic and up-down quark mass difference effects on octet baryon masses are very small, they have important consequences. The stability of the hydrogen atom against beta decay is a prominent example. Here we include these effects by adding them to valence quarks in a lattice QCD calculation based on $N_f=2+1$ simulations with 5 lattice spacings down to 0.054 fm, lattice sizes up to 6 fm and average up-down quark masses all the way down to their physical value. This allows us to gain control over all systematic errors, except for the one associated with neglecting electromagnetism in the sea. We compute the octet baryon isomultiplet mass splittings, as well as the individual contributions from electromagnetism and the up-down quark mass difference. Our results for the total splittings are in good agreement with experiment.

The $\bar{K} N \rightarrow K Ξ$ reaction in coupled channel chiral models up to next-to-leading order

We study the meson-baryon interaction in S-wave in the strangeness S=-1 sector using a chiral unitary approach based on a next-to-leading order chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. We fit our model to the large set of experimental data in different two-body channels. We pay particular attention to the $\bar{K} N \rightarrow K Ξ$ reaction, where the effect of the next-to-leading order terms in the Lagrangian are sufficiently large to be observed, since at tree level the cross section of this reaction is zero. For these channels we improve our approach by phenomenologically taking into account effects of the high spin hyperonic resonances.

The gradient flow running coupling with twisted boundary conditions

We study the gradient flow for Yang-Mills theories with twisted boundary conditions. The perturbative behavior of the energy density $\langle E(t)\rangle$ is used to define a running coupling at a scale given by the linear size of the finite volume box. We compute the non-perturbative running of the pure gauge $SU(2)$ coupling constant and conclude that the technique is well suited for further applications due to the relatively mild cutoff effects of the step scaling function and the high numerical precision that can be achieved in lattice simulations. We also comment on the inclusion of matter fields.

Effects of the next-to-leading order terms in the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian on the strangeness -1 s-wave meson-baryon interactions

The meson-baryon interactions in s-wave in the strangeness S=-1 sector are studied using a chiral unitarity approach based on the next-to-leading order chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. The model is fitted to the large set of experimental data in different two-body channels. Particular attention is paid to the $Ξ$ hyperon production reaction, $\bar{K} N \rightarrow K Ξ$, where the effect of the next-to-leading order terms in the Lagrangian play a crucial role, since the cross section of this reaction at tree level is zero.

Recent Developments on Hadron Interaction and Dynamically Generated Resonances

In this talk I report on the recent developments in the subject of dynamically generated resonances. In particular I discuss the $γp \to K^0 Σ^+$ and $γn \to K^0 Σ^0$ reactions, with a peculiar behavior around the $K^{*0} Λ$ threshold, due to a $1/2^-$ resonance around 2035 MeV. Similarly, I discuss a BES experiment, $J/ψ\to ηK^{*0} \bar K^{*0}$ decay, which provides evidence for a new $h_1$ resonance around 1830 MeV that was predicted from the vector-vector interaction. A short discussion is then made about recent advances in the charm and beauty sectors.

The gradient flow in a twisted box

We study the perturbative behavior of the gradient flow in a twisted box. We apply this information to define a running coupling using the energy density of the flow field. We study the step-scaling function and the size of cutoff effects in SU(2) pure gauge theory. We conclude that the twisted gradient flow running coupling scheme is a valid strategy for step-scaling purposes due to the relatively mild cutoff effects and high precision.

The role of vector-baryon channels and resonances in the $γp \to K^0 Σ^+$ and $γn \to K^0 Σ^0$ reactions near the $K^* Λ$ threshold

We have studied the $γp \to K^0 Σ^+$ reaction in the energy region around the $K^* Λ$ and $K^* Σ$ thresholds, where the CBELSA/TAPS cross section shows a sudden drop and the differential cross section experiences a transition from a forward-peaked distribution to a flat one. Our coupled channel model incorporates the dynamics of the vector meson-baryon interaction which is obtained from the hidden gauge formalism. We find that the cross section in this energy region results from a delicate interference between amplitudes having $K^* Λ$ and $K^*Σ$ intermediate states. The sharp downfall is dictated by the presence of a nearby $N^*$ resonance produced by our model, a feature that we have employed to predict its properties. We also show results for the complementary $γn \to K^0 Σ^0$ reaction, the measurement of which would test the mechanism proposed in this work.

The width of the omega meson in the nuclear medium

We evaluate the width of the $ω$ meson in nuclear matter. We consider the free decay mode of the $ω$ into three pions, which is dominated by $ρπ$ decay, and replace the $ρ$ and $π$ propagators by their medium modified ones. We also take into account the quasielastic and inelastic processes induced by a vector-baryon interaction dominated by vector meson exchange, as well as the contributions coming from the $ω\to K \bar K$ mechanism with medium modified $K$, $\bar K$ propagators. We obtain a substantial increase of the $ω$ width in the medium, reaching a value of $129 \pm 10$ MeV at normal nuclear matter density for an $ω$ at rest, which comes mainly from $ωN \to ππN, ωN N \to πNN$ processes associated to the dominant $ω\to ρπ$ decay mode. The value of the width increases moderately with momentum, reaching values of around 200 MeV at 600 MeV/c.

$|V_{ub}|$ determination in lattice QCD

The 2012 PDG reports a tension at the level of $3 σ$ between two exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$. They are obtained by combining the experimental branching ratios of $B \to τν$ and $B \to πl ν$ (respectively) with a theoretical computation of the hadronic matrix elements $\fB$ and the $B \to π$ form factor $f_+(q^2)$. To understand the tension, improved precision and a careful analysis of the systematics involved are necessary. We report the results of the ALPHA collaboration for $\fB$ from the lattice with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We employ HQET, including $1/m_b$ corrections, with pion masses ranging down to $\approx$ 190 MeV. Renormalization and matching were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a^{-1}\approx 4.1$ GeV are used in the continuum extrapolation. We also present progress towards a computation of $f_+(q^2)$, to directly compare two independent exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ with each other and with inclusive determinations. Additionally, we report on preliminary results for $\fBq{s}$, needed for the analysis of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$.}

Interaction of vector mesons with baryons and nuclei

After some short introductory remarks on particular issues on the vector mesons in nuclei, in this paper we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei from a modern perspective using the local hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons. We present results for the vector baryon interaction and in particular for the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons, taking also the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons into account. We then venture into the charm sector, reporting on hidden charm baryon states around 4400 MeV, generated from the interaction of vector mesons and baryons with charm, which have a strong repercussion on the properties of the $J/ΨN$ interaction. We also address the interaction of $K^*$ with nuclei and make suggestions to measure the predicted huge width in the medium by means of the transparency ratio. The formalism is extended to study the phenomenon of $J/ψ$ suppression in nuclei via $J/ψ$ photoproduction reactions.

Interaction of vector mesons with baryons and vectors in the nuclear medium

In this talk we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei. We begin with the hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons, then review results for vector baryon interaction and in particular the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons. New developments concerning the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons are also reported. We include some discussion on the $5/2^+$ $Δ$ resonances around 2000 MeV, where we suggest that the $Δ(2000)5/2^+$ resonance, which comes in the PDG from averaging a set of resonances appearing around 1700 MeV and another one around 2200 MeV, corresponds indeed to two distinct resonances. We also report on a hidden charm baryon state around 4400 MeV coming from the interaction of vector mesons and baryons with charm, and how this state has some repercussion in the $J/ψ$ suppression in nuclei. The interaction of $K^*$ in nuclei is also reported and suggestions are made to measure by means of the transparency ratio the huge width in the medium that the theoretical calculations predict. The formalism is extended to $J/ψ$ interaction with nuclei and the transparency ratio for $J/ψ$ photoproduction in nuclei is studied and shown to be a good tool to find possible baryon states which couple to $J/ψN$.

Strategies in tower solar power plant optimization

A method for optimizing a central receiver solar thermal electric power plant is studied. We parametrize the plant design as a function of eleven design variables and reduce the problem of finding optimal designs to the numerical problem of finding the minimum of a function of several variables. This minimization problem is attacked with different algorithms both local and global in nature. We find that all algorithms find the same minimum of the objective function. The performance of each of the algorithms and the resulting designs are studied for two typical cases. We describe a method to evaluate the impact of design variables in the plant performance. This method will tell us what variables are key to the optimal plant design and which ones are less important. This information can be used to further improve the plant design and to accelerate the optimization procedure.

Transparency ratio in γA -> η' A' and the in-medium η' width

The photoproduction of η'-mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 1500 - 2200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of η'-mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the η' -meson of the order of Γ= 15-25 MeV at ρ=ρ_0 for an average momentum p_{η'} = 1050 MeV/c, at which the η'-meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic η' N cross section is estimated to be 3 - 10 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of η'-mesons by σ(A) = σ_0 A^α, a value of α= 0.84\pm0.03 has been deduced.

Chiral unitary approach to η' N scattering at low energies

We study the η' N interaction within a chiral unitary approach which includes πN, ηN and related pseudoscalar meson-baryon coupled channels. Since the SU(3) singlet does not contribute to the standard interaction and the η' is mostly a singlet, the resulting scattering amplitude is very small and inconsistent with experimental estimations of the η' N scattering length. The additional consideration of vector meson-baryon states into the coupled channel scheme, via normal and anomalous couplings of pseudoscalar to vector mesons, enhances substantially the η' N amplitude. We also exploit the freedom of adding to the Lagrangian a new term, allowed by the symmetries of QCD, which couples baryons to the singlet meson of SU(3). Adjusting the unknown strength to the η' N scattering length, we obtain predictions for the elastic η' N --> η' N and inelastic η' N --> ηN, πN, KΛ, KΣ cross sections at low η' energies, and discuss their significance.

Dynamically generated hadron resonances

As an example of dynamically generated resonances we mention the interaction of vector mesons with baryons within the local hidden gauge formalism which gives rise to a large amount of such states, many of which can be associated to known resonances, while others represent predictions for new resonances. The width of these states coming from decay into pseudoscalar baryon is also addressed. We also mention recent states coming from $Δρπ$ interaction obtained with Faddeev equations.

eta-prime nucleus optical potential and possible eta-prime bound states

Starting from a recent model of the eta'N interaction, we evaluate the eta'-nucleus optical potential, including the contribution of lowest order in density, t rho/2m_eta', together with the second order terms accounting for eta' absorption by two nucleons. We also calculate the formation cross section of the eta' bound states from (pi+,p) reactions on nuclei. The eta'-nucleus potential suffers from uncertainties tied to the poorly known eta'N interaction, which can be partially constrained by the experimental modulus of the eta'N scattering length and/or the recently measured transparency ratios in eta' nuclear photoproduction. Assuming an attractive interaction and taking the claimed experimental value |a_eta'N| = 0.1 fm, we obtain a eta' optical potential in nuclear matter at saturation density of V_eta' = -(8.7 + 1.8i) MeV, not attractive enough to produce eta' bound states in light nuclei. Larger values of the scattering length give rise to deeper optical potentials, with moderate enough imaginary parts. For a value |a_eta'| = 0.3 fm, which can still be considered to lie within the uncertainties of the experimental constraints, the spectra of light and medium nuclei show clear structures associated to eta'-nuclear bound states and to threshold enhancements in the unbound region.

Microscopic approach to the proton asymmetry in the non-mesonic weak decay of Lambda-hypernuclei

The non--mesonic weak decay of polarized $Λ$-hypernuclei is studied with a microscopic diagrammatic formalism in which one- and two-nucleon induced decay mechanisms, $\vecΛ N \to NN$ and $\vecΛ NN \to NNN$, are considered together with (and on the same ground of) nucleon final state interactions. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation. Our approach adopts different one-meson-exchange weak transition potentials, while the strong interaction effects are accounted for by a Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction. We also consider the two-pion-exchange effect in the weak transition potential. Both the two-nucleon induced decay mechanism and the final state interactions reduce the magnitude of the asymmetry. The quantum interference terms considered in the present microscopic approach give rise to an opposite behavior of the asymmetry with increasing energy cuts to that observed in models describing the nucleon final state interactions semi-classically via the intranuclear cascade code. Our results for the asymmetry parameter in $^{12}_Λ$C obtained with different potential models are consistent with the asymmetry measured at KEK.

Nuclear medium effects on the $\bar K^*$ meson

The $\bar K^*$ meson in dense matter is analyzed by means of a unitary approach in coupled channels based on the local hidden gauge formalism. The $\bar K^*$ self-energy and the corresponding $\bar K^*$ spectral function in the nuclear medium are obtained. We observe that the $\bar K^*$ develops a width in matter up to five times bigger than in free space. We also estimate the transparency ratio of the $γA \to K^+ K^{*-} A^\prime$ reaction. This ratio is an excellent tool to detect experimentally modifications of the $\bar K^*$ meson in dense matter.

Open charm meson in nuclear matter at finite temperature beyond the zero range approximation

The properties of open charm mesons, $D$, $\bar D$, $D_s$ and $\bar D_s$ in nuclear matter at finite temperature are studied within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach. The interaction of the low lying pseudoscalar mesons with the ground state baryons in the charm sector is derived from a $t$-channel vector-exchange model. The in-medium scattering amplitudes are obtained by solving the Lippmann-Schwinger equation at finite temperature including Pauli blocking effects, as well as $D$, $\bar D$, $D_s$ and $\bar D_s$ self-energies taking their mutual influence into account. We find that the in-medium properties of the $D$ meson are affected by the $D_s$-meson self-energy through the intermediate $D_s Y$ loops coupled to $DN$ states. Similarly, dressing the $\bar{D}$ meson in the $\bar{D}Y$ loops has an influence over the properties of the $\bar{D}_s$ meson.

Selected topics on Hadrons in Nuclei

In this talk we report on selected topics on hadrons in nuclei. The first topic is the renormalization of the width of the $Λ(1520)$ in a nuclear medium. This is followed by a short update of the situation of the $ω$ in the medium. The investigation of the properties of $\bar{K}$ in the nuclear medium from the study of the $(K_{flight},p)$ reaction is also addressed, as well as properties of X,Y,Z charmed and hidden charm resonances in a nuclear medium. Finally we address the novel issue of multimeson states.

$\bar K^*$ meson in dense matter

We study the properties of $\bar K^*$ mesons in nuclear matter using a unitary approach in coupled channels within the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism and incorporating the $\bar K π$ decay channel in matter. The in-medium $\bar K^* N$ interaction accounts for Pauli blocking effects and incorporates the $\bar K^*$ self-energy in a self-consistent manner. We also obtain the $\bar K^*$ (off-shell) spectral function and analyze its behaviour at finite density and momentum. At normal nuclear matter density, the $\bar K^*$ meson feels a moderately attractive potential while the $\bar K^*$ width becomes five times larger than in free space. We estimate the transparency ratio of the $γA \to K^+ K^{* -} A^\prime$ reaction, which we propose as a feasible scenario at present facilities to detect the changes of the properties of the $\bar K^*$ meson in the nuclear medium.

We obtain the properties of charmed mesons in dense matter using a coupled-channel approach which accounts for Pauli blocking effects and meson self-energies in a self-consistent manner. We study the behaviour of dynamically-generated baryonic resonances together with the open-charm meson spectral functions in this dense nuclear environment. We discuss the implications of the in-medium properties of open-charm mesons on the $D_{s0}(2317)$ and the predicted X(3700) scalar resonances, and on the formation of $D$-mesic nuclei.

Experimental status of deeply bound kaonic states in nuclei

We review recent claims of the existence of deeply bound kaonic states in nuclei. Also we study in details the (K-,p) reaction on C12 with 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, based on which a deep kaon nucleus optical potential was claimed in [1]. In our Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction we include not only the quasi-elastic K- p scattering, as in [1], but also K- absorption by one and two nucleons followed by the decay of the hyperon in pi N, which can also produce strength in the region of interest. The final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary particles on their way out of the nucleus is also considered. We will show that all these additional mechanisms allow us to explain the observed spectrum with a "standard" shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models. [1] T. Proton emission off nuclei induced by kaons in flight

We study the (K-,p) reaction on nuclei with a 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, paying a special attention at the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deeply attractive kaon nucleus optical potential. Our model describes the nuclear reaction in the framework of a local density approach and the calculations are performed following two different procedures: one is based on a many-body method using the Lindhard function and the other one is based on a Monte Carlo simulation. While both procedures coincide when it comes to consider the contribution of kaon quasi-elastic scattering, the simulation method offers more flexibility since it allows us to account for other processes which also contribute to the proton spectra, such as K- absorption by one and two nucleons producing hyperons. The simulation also considers final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary and secondary particles on their way out of the nucleus, as well as the weak decay of the produced hyperons into (pi N). We find that this kaon in-flight reaction is not well suited to determine the kaon optical potential due, essentially, to the limited sensitivity of the cross section to its strength, but also to unavoidable uncertainties in the contribution from other processes. We also simulate the experimental requirement of having, together with the energetic proton, at least one charged particle detected in the decay counter surrounding the target, and find that the shape of the original cross section is appreciably distorted. We conclude that the new mechanisms, not considered in the analysis of the original experiment, allow us to explain the observed spectrum with the shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models.

Radiative decays of dynamically generated charmed baryons

In this work we study the radiative decay of dynamically generated $J^P=\oh^-$ charm baryons into the ground state $J^P=\oh^+$ baryons. Since different theoretical interpretations of these baryonic resonances, and in particular of the $Λ_c(2595)$, give different predictions, a precise experimental measurement of these decays would be an important step for understanding their nature.

Review on dynamically generated resonances

We present recent results on the vector meson-vector meson and vector meson-baryon interaction using a unitary approach based on the hidden-gauge Lagrangians. For the vector-vector case we find that 11 states get dynamically generated, corresponding to poles of the scattering matrices on the second Riemann sheet. In the vector-baryon sector we also find 9 states dynamically generated from the vector-baryon octet interaction and 10 from the vector-baryon decuplet interaction. We also report on baryon states found from the interaction of two mesons and a baryon.

Sigma term and strangeness content of the nucleon

A status report is given for a joint project of the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration and the Regensburg group to study the quark mass-dependence of octet baryons in SU(3) Baryon XPT. This formulation is expected to extend to larger masses than Heavy-Baryon XPT. Its applicability is tested with 2+1 flavor data which cover three lattice spacings and pion masses down to about 190 MeV, in large volumes. Also polynomial and rational interpolations in M_π^2 and M_K^2 are used to assess the uncertainty due to the ansatz. Both frameworks are combined to explore the precision to be expected in a controlled determination of the nucleon sigma term and strangeness content.

Strange meson production at high density and temperature

The properties of strange mesons ($K$, $\bar K$ and $\bar K^*$) in dense matter are studied using a unitary approach in coupled channels for meson-baryon scattering. The kaon-nucleon interaction incorporates $s$- and $p$-wave contributions within a chiral model whereas the interaction of $\bar K^*$ with nucleons is obtained in the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism. The in-medium solution for the scattering amplitude accounts for Pauli blocking effects, mean-field binding on baryons, and meson self-energies. We obtain the $K$, $\bar K$ and $\bar K^*$ (off-shell) spectral functions in the nuclear medium and study their behaviour at finite density, temperature and momentum. We also analyze the energy weighted sum rules of the kaon propagator as a quality test of model calculations. We finally estimate the transparency ratio of the $γA \to K^+ K^{*-} A^\prime$ reaction, which we propose as a feasible scenario at present facilities to detect in-medium modifications of the $\bar K^*$ meson.

The ratio FK/Fpi in QCD

We determine the ratio FK/Fpi in QCD with Nf=2+1 flavors of sea quarks, based on a series of lattice calculations with three different lattice spacings, large volumes and a simulated pion mass reaching down to about 190 MeV. We obtain FK/Fpi=1.192 +/- 0.007(stat) +/- 0.006(syst). This result is then used to give an updated value of the CKM matrix element |Vus|. Two and three nucleon K- absorption in nuclei

We analyze the peaks in the (Lambda p) and (Lambda d) invariant mass distributions, observed in recent FINUDA experiments and claimed to be signals of deeply bound kaonic states, and find them to be naturally explained in terms of K- absorption by two or three nucleons leaving the rest of the original nuclei as spectator. For reactions on heavy nuclei, the subsequent interactions of the particles produced in the primary absorption process with the residual nucleus play an important role. Thus at present there is no experimental evidence of deeply bound K- states in nuclei. However some new physics can be extracted from the data of FINUDA experiments.

Dynamically generated open charmed baryons beyond the zero range approximation

The interaction of the low lying pseudo-scalar mesons with the ground state baryons in the charm sector is studied within a coupled channel approach using a t-channel vector-exchange driving force. The amplitudes describing the scattering of the pseudo-scalar mesons off the ground-state baryons are obtained by solving the Lippmann--Schwinger equation. We analyze in detail the effects of going beyond the $t=0$ approximation. Our model predicts the dynamical generation of several open charmed baryon resonances in different isospin and strangeness channels, some of which can be clearly identified with recently observed states.

Dynamically generated resonances from the vector octet-baryon octet interaction

We study the interaction of vector mesons with the octet of stable baryons in the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism using a coupled channels unitary approach. We examine the scattering amplitudes and their poles, which can be associated to known J^P=1/2^-,3/2^- baryon resonances, in some cases, or give predictions in other ones. The formalism employed produces doublets of degenerate J^P=1/2^-,3/2^- states, a pattern which is observed experimentally in several cases. The findings of this work should also be useful to guide present experimental programs searching for new resonances, in particular in the strange sector where the current information is very poor.

Energy weighted sum rules for mesons in hot and dense matter

We study energy weighted sum rules of the pion and kaon propagator in nuclear matter at finite temperature. The sum rules are obtained from matching the Dyson form of the meson propagator with its spectral Lehmann representation at low and high energies. We calculate the sum rules for specific models of the kaon and pion self-energy. The in-medium spectral densities of the K and anti-K mesons are obtained from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the S- and P-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The pion self-energy is determined from the P-wave coupling to particle-hole and Delta-hole excitations, modified by short range correlations. The sum rules for the lower energy weights are fulfilled satisfactorily and reflect the contributions from the different quasi-particle and collective modes of the meson spectral function. We discuss the sensitivity of the sum rules to the distribution of spectral strength and their usefulness as quality tests of model calculations.

Strange mesons from SIS to FAIR

The properties of $K$ and $\bar K$ mesons in nuclear matter at finite temperature are obtained from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the $s$- and p-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The in-medium solution accounts for Pauli blocking effects, mean-field binding on all the baryons involved, and $π$ and kaon self-energies. The $\bar K$ spectral function spreads over a wide range of energies, reflecting the melting of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance and the contribution of hyperon-hole components at finite temperature. In the $KN$ sector, the quasi-particle peak is considerably broadened with increasing density and temperature. We also study the energy weighted sum rules of the kaon propagator by matching the Dyson form of the propagator with its spectral Lehmann representation at low and high energies. The sum rules for the lower energy weights are fulfilled satisfactorily and reflect the contributions from the different quasi-particle and collective modes of the spectral function. We analyze the sensitivity of the sum rules to the distribution of spectral strength and their usefulness as quality tests of model calculations.

The (K-,p) reaction on C12 at KEK

We study the (K-,p) reaction on C12 with a kaon beam of 1 GeV momentum, paying a special attention to the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deep kaon nucleus optical potential [1]. The experiment looks for fast protons emitted from the absorption of in flight kaons by nuclei, but in coincidence with at least one charged particle in the decay counters sandwiching the target. The analysis of the data is done in [1] assuming that the coincidence requirement does not change the shape of the final spectra. However our detailed calculations show that this assumption doesn't hold, and, thus, the final conclusion of this experiment is doubtful. We perform Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction. The advantage of our method with respect to Green's function method used in [1] is that it allows to account not only for quasi-elastic K- p scattering, but also for the other processes which contribute to the proton spectra. We investigated the effect of the multi-scatterings and of the K- absorptions by one and two nucleons (K- N --> pi Y and K- N N --> Y N) followed by the decay of the hyperon in pi N. We show that all these mechanisms allow us to explain reasonably well the observed spectrum with standard shallow kaon nucleus optical potential, obtained in chiral models. [1] T. The (K-,p) reaction on nuclei with in-flight kaons

We perform a theoretical study of the spectrum of protons with kinetic energies of around 600 MeV, emitted following the interaction of 1 GeV/c kaons with nuclei. A recent experimental analysis of this (K-,p) reaction on 12C, based on the dominant quasielastic process, has suggested a deeply attractive kaon nucleus potential. Our Monte Carlo simulation considers, in addition, the one-and two-nucleon K- absorption processes producing hyperons that decay into πN pairs. We find that this kaon in-flight reaction is not well suited to determine the kaon optical potential due, essentially, to the limited sensitivity of the cross section to its strength, but also to unavoidable uncertainties from the coincidence requirement applied in the experiment. A shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models is perfectly compatible with the observed spectrum.

Single and double coincidence nucleon spectra in the weak decay of Lambda hypernuclei

Recent progress has been experienced in the field of hypernuclear weak decay, especially concerning the ratio of the neutron- to proton-induced Lambda non-mesonic decay rates, G_n/G_p. Theoretical analyses of nucleon coincidence data have been performed in a finite nucleus framework. They led to the extraction of G_n/G_p values in agreement with pure theoretical estimates, thus providing an evidence for the solution of a longstanding puzzle. Here we present an alternative approach to the problem, based on a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation. The work is motivated by the exigence to make the determination of G_n/G_p from data less model dependent. One-meson-exchange potentials are used for describing both the one- and two-nucleon induced decays, Lambda N -> n N and Lambda N N -> n N N. For the latter, treated within a microscopic approach, the channels Lambda n n -> n n n and Lambda p p -> n p p are included in addition to the mode Lambda n p -> n n p already considered, in a phenomenological way, in previous studies. The propagation of the final nucleons in the residual nucleus is simulated by an intranuclear cascade code. We evaluate single and double coincidence nucleon spectra for the non-mesonic decay of C-12-Lambda. Through the comparison of our predictions with KEK coincidence data we determine G_n/G_p=0.43 \pm 0.10 for this hypernucleus, confirming previous finite nucleus analyses.

Chiral dynamics of baryon resonances and hadrons in a nuclear medium

In these lectures I make an introduction to chiral unitary theory applied to the meson baryon interaction and show how several well known resonances are dynamically generated, and others are predicted. Two very recent experiments are analyzed, one of them showing the existence of two $Λ(1405)$ states and the other one providing support for the $Λ(1520)$ resonance as a quasibound state of $Σ(1385) π$. The use of chiral Lagrangians to account for the hadronic interaction at the elementary level introduces a new approach to deal with the modification of meson and baryon properties in a nuclear medium. Examples of it for $\bar{K}$, $η$ and $ϕ$ modification in the nuclear medium are presented.

Asymmetries in the Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Polarized Lambda-Hypernuclei

The non-mesonic weak decay of polarized Lambda-hypernuclei is studied for the first time by taking into account, with a Monte Carlo intranuclear cascade code, the nucleon final state interactions. A one-meson-exchange model is employed to describe the Lambda N-> n N processes in a finite nucleus framework. The relationship between the intrinsic Lambda asymmetry parameter a_Λand the asymmetry a^M_Λaccessible in experiments is discussed. A strong dependence of a^M_Λon nucleon final state interactions and detection threshold is obtained. Our results for a^M_Λare consistent with ^{11}_ΛB and ^{12}_ΛC data but disagree with observations in ^5_ΛHe.

$Λ(1405)$ production in the $π^-p\to K^0πΣ$ reaction

We discuss the mechanisms that lead to $Λ(1405)$ production in the $π^-p\to K^0πΣ$ reaction. The problem has gained renewed interest after different works converge to the conclusion that there are two resonances around the region of 1400 MeV, rather than one, and that they couple differently to the $πΣ$ and $\bar{K}N$ channels. We look at the dynamics of that reaction and find two mechanisms which eventually filter each one of the resonances, leading to very different shapes of the $πΣ$ invariant mass distributions. The combination of the two mechanisms leads to a shape of this distribution compatible with the experimental measurements.

Chiral unitary approach to hadron spectroscopy

The s-wave meson-baryon interaction in the $S = -1$, $S= 0$ and $S= -2$ sectors is studied by means of coupled channels, using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian and the N/D method or equivalently the Bethe-Salpeter equation to implement unitarity. This chiral approach leads to the dynamical generation of the $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1670)$ and $Σ(1620)$ states for $S = -1$, the $N^*(1535)$ for $S= 0$ and the $Ξ(1620)$ for $S= -2$. We look for poles in the complex plane and extract the couplings of the resonances to the different final states. This allows identifying the $Λ(1405)$ and the $Λ(1670)$ resonances with $\bar{K}N$ and $KΞ$ quasibound states, respectively. Our results are found to be incompatible with the measured properties of the $Ξ(1690)$ resonance, thus ruling this state out as the remaining member of this octet of dynamically generated resonances. We therefore assign $1/2^-$ for the spin and parity of the $Ξ(1620)$ resonance as the $S=-2$ member of the lowest-lying $1/2^-$ octet.

Test of phi renormalization in nuclei through phi photoproduction

We propose an experimental procedure to find out the medium modifications of the $ϕ$ meson. The reaction is inclusive $ϕ$ photoproduction in nuclei, looking for $K^+ K^-$ pairs from the $ϕ$ decay with total momentum smaller than 100-150 $MeV/c$, which are made possible at energies of present laboratories from center of mass $ϕ$ backward production and the help of Fermi motion. We have conducted a many body calculation of the mass distribution of the $ϕ$ adapted to the experimental set up of a recent JLAB experiment where the backwards $ϕ$ photoproduction has been measured. Using recent results for the in medium properties of the $ϕ$, we find that the width of the invariant mass distribution for photoproduction on medium to heavy nuclei is larger than the free $ϕ$ width by a factor of two or more.

Photoproduction of meson and baryon resonances in a chiral unitary approach

By means of a coupled channel non-perturbative unitary approach, it is possible to extend the strong constrains of Chiral Perturbation Theory to higher energies. In particular, it is possible to reproduce the lowest lying resonances in meson-meson scattering up to 1.2 GeV using the parameters of the O(p^2) and O(p^4) Chiral Lagrangian. The meson baryon sector can also be tackled along similar lines. We report on an update of these results showing some examples of photon induced reactions where the techniques have been recently applied.

Neutron and proton spectra from the decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei

We have determined the spectra of neutrons and protons following the decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei through the one- and two-nucleon induced mechanisms. The momentum distributions of the primary nucleons are calculated and a Monte Carlo simulation is used to account for final state interactions. From the spectra we calculate the number of neutrons ($N_n$) and protons ($N_p$) per $Λ$ decay and show how the measurement of these quantities, particularly $N_p$, can lead to a determination of $Γ_n / Γ_p$, the ratio of neutron to proton induced $Λ$ decay. We also show that the consideration of the two-nucleon induced channel has a repercussion in the results, widening the band of allowed values of $Γ_n / Γ_p$ with respect to what is obtained neglecting this channel.

The nonmesonic weak decay of the hypertriton

The nonmesonic decay of the hypertriton is calculated based on a hypertriton wavefunction and 3N scattering states, which are rigorous solutions of 3-body Faddeev equations using realistic NN and hyperon-nucleon interactions. The pion-exchange together with heavier meson exchanges for the $ΛN \to N N $ transition is considered. The total nonmesonic decay rate is found to be 0.5% of the free $Λ$ decay rate. Integrated as well as differential decay rates are given. The p- and n- induced decays are discussed thoroughly and it is shown that the corresponding total rates cannot be measured individually.
