Improved upper limit on degree-scale CMB B-mode polarization power from the 670 square-degree POLARBEAR survey

We report an improved measurement of the degree-scale cosmic microwave background $B$-mode angular-power spectrum over 670 square-degree sky area at 150 GHz with POLARBEAR. In the original analysis of the data, errors in the angle measurement of the continuously rotating half-wave plate, a polarization modulator, caused significant data loss. By introducing an angle-correction algorithm, the data volume is increased by a factor of 1.8. We report a new analysis using the larger data set. We find the measured $B$-mode spectrum is consistent with the $Λ$CDM model with Galactic dust foregrounds. We estimate the contamination of the foreground by cross-correlating our data and Planck 143, 217, and 353 GHz measurements, where its spectrum is modeled as a power law in angular scale and a modified blackbody in frequency. We place an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ < 0.33 at 95% confidence level after marginalizing over the foreground parameters.

$^{31}$P NMR studies of an iron-based superconductor Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ with $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 29 K

We report $^{31}$P NMR studies of an oriented polycrystalline superconductor of Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ with $x\sim$ 0.4 ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 29 K) at $T$ = 14$-$325 K and $B_{0}$ = 1 and 5 T. The $^{31}$P Knight shift $K_{ab}$ at $B_{0}\perp c$ shows a nearly $T$-independent uniform spin susceptibility above $T_\mathrm{c}$ and a spin singlet decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $^{31}$P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ shows an asymptotic behavior of $a+bT$ ($a$ and $b$ are constants) at $T >$ 100 K and the minimum at 40 K with an upturn toward $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $a$ term in 1/$T_{1}$ indicates the presence of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The negative $θ$ = $-$15 K of the Curie-Weiss-type antiferromagnetic spin susceptibility $χ$($Q$) $\propto$ 1/($T$+$θ$) in the analysis of 1/$T_{1}T$ suggests antiferromagnetic instability in the superconducting state. Discussions are made from the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory for the spin fluctuations with interlayer correlation.

A measurement of the CMB E-mode angular power spectrum at subdegree scales from 670 square degrees of POLARBEAR data

We report a measurement of the E-mode polarization power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using 150 GHz data taken from July 2014 to December 2016 with the POLARBEAR experiment. We reach an effective polarization map noise level of $32\,μ\mathrm{K}$-$\mathrm{arcmin}$ across an observation area of 670 square degrees. We measure the EE power spectrum over the angular multipole range $500 \leq \ell <3000$, tracing the third to seventh acoustic peaks with high sensitivity. The statistical uncertainty on E-mode bandpowers is $\sim 2.3 μ{\rm K}^2$ at $\ell \sim 1000$ with a systematic uncertainty of 0.5$μ{\rm K}^2$. The data are consistent with the standard $Λ$CDM cosmological model with a probability-to-exceed of 0.38. We combine recent CMB E-mode measurements and make inferences about cosmological parameters in $Λ$CDM as well as in extensions to $Λ$CDM. Adding the ground-based CMB polarization measurements to the Planck dataset reduces the uncertainty on the Hubble constant by a factor of 1.2 to $H_0 = 67.20 \pm 0.57 {\rm km\,s^{-1} \,Mpc^{-1}}$. When allowing the number of relativistic species ($N_{eff}$) to vary, we find $N_{eff} = 2.94 \pm 0.16$, which is in good agreement with the standard value of 3.046. Instead allowing the primordial helium abundance ($Y_{He}$) to vary, the data favor $Y_{He} = 0.248 \pm 0.012$. This is very close to the expectation of 0.2467 from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. When varying both $Y_{He}$ and $N_{eff}$, we find $N_{eff} = 2.70 \pm 0.26$ and $Y_{He} = 0.262 \pm 0.015$.

Internal delensing of Cosmic Microwave Background polarization B-modes with the POLARBEAR experiment

Using only cosmic microwave background polarization data from the POLARBEAR experiment, we measure $B$-mode polarization delensing on subdegree scales at more than $5σ$ significance. We achieve a 14% $B$-mode power variance reduction, the highest to date for internal delensing, and improve this result to 2% by applying for the first time an iterative maximum a posteriori delensing method. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of internal delensing as a means of improving constraints on inflationary models, paving the way for the optimal analysis of next-generation primordial $B$-mode experiments.

Production Method of Millimeter-Wave Absorber with 3D-Printed Mold

We established a production method of a good millimeter-wave absorber by using a 3D-printed mold. The mold has a periodic pyramid shape, and an absorptive material is filled into the mold. This shape reduces the surface reflection. The 3D-printed mold is made from a transparent material in the millimeter-wave range. Therefore, unmolding is not necessary. A significant benefit of this production method is easy prototyping with various shapes and various absorptive materials. We produced a test model and used a two-component epoxy encapsulant as the absorptive material. The test model achieved a low reflectance: $\sim 1\%$ at 100 GHz. The absorber is sometimes maintained at a low temperature condition for cases in which superconducting detectors are used. Therefore, cryogenic performance is required in terms of a mechanical strength for the thermal cycles, an adhesive strength, and a sufficient thermal conductivity. We confirmed the test-model strength by immersing the model into a liquid-nitrogen bath.

A Measurement of the Degree Scale CMB B-mode Angular Power Spectrum with POLARBEAR

We present a measurement of the $B$-mode polarization power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using taken from July 2014 to December 2016 with the POLARBEAR experiment. The CMB power spectra are measured using observations at 150 GHz with an instantaneous array sensitivity of $\mathrm{NET}_\mathrm{array}=23\, μ\mathrm{K} \sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$ on a 670 square degree patch of sky centered at (RA, Dec)=($+0^\mathrm{h}12^\mathrm{m}0^\mathrm{s},-59^\circ18^\prime$). A continuously rotating half-wave plate is used to modulate polarization and to suppress low-frequency noise. We achieve $32\,μ\mathrm{K}$-$\mathrm{arcmin}$ effective polarization map noise with a knee in sensitivity of $\ell = 90$, where the inflationary gravitational wave signal is expected to peak. The measured $B$-mode power spectrum is consistent with a $Λ$CDM lensing and single dust component foreground model over a range of multipoles $50 \leq \ell \leq 600$. The data disfavor zero $C_\ell^{BB}$ at $2.2σ$ using this $\ell$ range of POLARBEAR data alone. We cross-correlate our data with Planck high frequency maps and find the low-$\ell$ $B$-mode power in the combined dataset to be consistent with thermal dust emission. We place an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r < 0.90$ at 95% confidence level after marginalizing over foregrounds.

Are There Nuclear Structure Effects on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance and Nuclear Incompressibility near A~90?

"Background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering have been measured at a beam energy of 385 MeV in $^{90, 92}$Zr and $^{92}$Mo at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. The ISGMR strength distributions for the three nuclei coincide with each other, establishing clearly that nuclear incompressibility is not influenced by nuclear shell structure near $A\sim$90 as was claimed in recent measurements.

Change of nuclear configurations in the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{130}$Te $\rightarrow$ $^{130}$Xe and $^{136}$Xe $\rightarrow$ $^{136}$Ba

The change in the configuration of valence protons between the initial and final states in the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{130}$Te $\rightarrow$ $^{130}$Xe and of $^{136}$Xe $\rightarrow$ $^{136}$Ba has been determined by measuring the cross sections of the ($d$,$^3$He) reaction with 101-MeV deuterons. Together with our recent determination of the relevant neutron configurations involved in the process, a quantitative comparison with the latest shell-model and interacting-boson-model calculations reveals significant discrepancies. These are the same calculations used to determine the nuclear matrix elements governing the rate of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay in these systems.

Self-triggered Model Predictive Control for Continuous-Time Systems: A Multiple Discretizations Approach

In this paper, we propose a new self-triggered formulation of Model Predictive Control for continuous-time linear networked control systems. Our control approach, which aims at reducing the number of transmitting control samples to the plant, is derived by parallelly solving optimal control problems with different sampling time intervals. The controller then picks up one sampling pattern as a transmission decision, such that a reduction of communication load and the stability will be obtained. The proposed strategy is illustrated through comparative simulation examples.

Electronic structure of Mott-insulator CaCu3Ti4O12: Photoemission and inverse photoemission study

We have performed the photoemission and inverse photoemission experiments to elucidate the origin of Mott insulating states in A-site ordered perovskite CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (CCTO). Experimental results have revealed that Cu 3$d$-O 2$p$ hybridized bands, which are located around the Fermi level in the prediction of the local-density approximation (LDA) band calculations, are actually separated into the upper Hubbard band at $\sim$ 1.5 eV and the lower Hubbard band at $\sim$ $-$1.7 eV with a band gap of $\sim$ 1.5-1.8 eV. We also observed that Cu 3$d$ peak at $\sim$ $-$3.8 eV and Ti 3$d$ peak at $\sim$ 3.8 eV are further away from each other than as indicated in the LDA calculations. In addition, it is found that the multiplet strucutre around $-$9 eV includes a considerable number of O 2$p$ states. These observations indicate that the Cu 3$d$ and Ti 3$d$ electrons hybridized with the O 2$p$ states are strongly correlated, which originates in the Mott-insulating states of CCTO.

Single-crystal growth of underdoped Bi-2223

To investigate the origin of the enhanced Tc ({\approx} 110 K) of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223), its underdoped single crystals are a critical requirement. Here, we demonstrate the first successful in-plane resistivity measurements of heavily underdoped Bi-2223 (zero-resistivity temperatures {\approx} 20~35 K). Detailed crystal growth methods, the annealing process, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurement results are also reported.

Direct measurement of the upper critical field in a cuprate superconductor

The upper critical field Hc2 is a fundamental measure of the pairing strength, yet there is no agreement on its magnitude and doping dependence in cuprate superconductors. We have used thermal conductivity as a direct probe of Hc2 in the cuprates YBa2Cu3Oy and YBa2Cu4O8 to show that there is no vortex liquid at T = 0, allowing us to use high-field resistivity measurements to map out the doping dependence of Hc2 across the phase diagram. Hc2(p) exhibits two peaks, each located at a critical point where the Fermi surface undergoes a transformation. The condensation energy obtained directly from Hc2, and previous Hc1 data, undergoes a 20-fold collapse below the higher critical point. These data provide quantitative information on the impact of competing phases in suppressing superconductivity in cuprates.

High-resolution search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via a pion-induced reaction at J-PARC

The pentaquark $Θ^+$ has been searched for via the $π^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 $μ$b/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/$c$ data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $Θ^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.

Search for Photon-Photon Elastic Scattering in the X-ray Region

We report the first results of a search for real photon-photon scattering using X rays. A novel system is developed to split and collide X-ray pulses by applying interferometric techniques. A total of $6.5\times10^{5}$ pulses (each containing about $10^{11}$ photons) from an X-ray Free-Electron Laser are injected into the system. No scattered events are observed, and an upper limit of $1.7\times 10^{-24}$ ${\rm m^{2}}$ (95% C.L.) is obtained on the photon-photon elastic scattering cross section at 6.5 keV.

Search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction at 1.92 GeV/$c$

The $Θ^+$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/$c^2$(FWHM) at J-PARC. $π^-$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/$c$. No peak structure corresponding to the $Θ^+$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 $μ$b/sr in the mass region of 1.51$-$1.55 GeV/$c^2$.The upper limit of the $Θ^+$ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/$c^2$ and 3.1 MeV/$c^2$ for $J^P_Θ=1/2^+$ and $J^P_Θ=1/2^-$, respectively.

Size Distribution and Its Scaling Behavior of InAlAs/AlGaAs Quantum Dots Grown on GaAs by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

We studied the size distribution and its scaling behavior of self-assembled InAlAs/AlGaAs quantum dots (QDs) grown on GaAs with the Stranski-Krastanov (SK) mode by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), at both 480°C and 510°C, as a function of InAlAs coverage. A scaling function of the volume was found for the first time in ternary alloy QDs. The function was similar to that of InAs/GaAs QDs, which agreed with the scaling function for the two-dimensional submonolayer homoepitaxy simulation with a critical island size of i = 1. However, a character of i = 0 was also found as a tail in the large volume.

Direct observation of correlation time of dynamic nuclear polarization in single quantum dots

The spin interaction between an electron and nuclei was investigated optically in a single self-assembled InAlAs quantum dot (QD). In spin dynamics, the correlation time of the coupled electron-nuclear spin system and the electron spin relaxation time play a crucial role. We examined on a positively charged exciton in a QD to evaluate these key time constants directly via the temporal evolution measurements of the Overhauser shift and the degree of circular polarization. In addition, the validity of our used spin dynamics model was discussed in the context of the experimentally obtained key parameters.

Destruction of chain-superconductivity in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 in a weak magnetic field

We report measurements of the temperature dependent components of the magnetic penetration depth λ(T) in single crystal samples of YBa_2Cu_4O_8 using a radio frequency tunnel diode oscillator technique. We observe a downturn in λ(T) at low temperatures for currents flowing along the b and c axes but not along the a axis. The downturn in λ_b is suppressed by a small dc field of ~0.25 T. This and the zero field anisotropy of λ(T) likely result from proximity induced superconducting on the CuO chains, however we also discuss the possibility that a significant part of the anisotropy might originate from the CuO2 planes.

Fermi-surface reconstruction and two-carrier model for the Hall effect in YBa2Cu4O8

Pulsed field measurements of the Hall resistivity and magnetoresistance of underdoped YBa2Cu4O8 are analyzed self-consistently using a simple model based on coexisting electron and hole carriers. The resultant mobilities and Hall numbers are found to vary markedly with temperature. The conductivity of the hole carriers drops by one order of magnitude below 30 K, explaining the absence of quantum oscillations from these particular pockets. Meanwhile the Hall coefficient of the electron carriers becomes strongly negative below 50 K. The overall quality of the fits not only provides strong evidence for Fermi-surface reconstruction in Y-based cuprates, it also strongly constrains the type of reconstruction that might be occurring.

Optical-phonon mediated exciton energy relaxation with highly preserved spin states Optical-phonon mediated exciton energy relaxation with highly preserved spin states in a single quantum dot

High degree of preservation of spin states during energy relaxation processes mediated by optical phonons is demonstrated in a single quantum dot. Optical-phonon resonance and relevant suppression of spin relaxation are clearly identified as dip structures in photoluminescence excitation spectra probed by the positive trion emission. The absence of continuum states makes this observation possible under the cross-circularly polarized detection with respect to a circularly polarized pumping. Consequently, distinguishably high degree of circular polarization up to ~0.85 is achieved without applying external magnetic field at the optical-phonon resonance. Rate equation analysis reveals that the spin-flip probability during energy relaxation is restricted to less than 7.5%. It is also indicated that the spin flip time of the positive trion ground state is extended by more than 3 times compared with that of neutral exciton ground state. This corresponds to the spin flip time longer than 11 ns for the positive trion ground state. The influence of nuclear polarization to the present measurements is also discussed.

Zn-doping dependence of the wipeout region around Zn in YBa2(Cu1-xZnx)4O8

We estimated the spread of the magnetically enhanced regions (wipeout regions) around Zn ions in high-Tc superconductors YBa2(Cu1-xZnx)4O8 (x=0, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.022) at T=4.2 K, via the planar 63Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation study with Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-echo technique. From the analysis of nonexponential planar Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation curves, we found that the wipeout region per a Zn ion shrinks with Zn doping in the superconducting state. The shrinkage is associated with suppression of the host antiferromagnetic spin correlation, as a result from a dilution effect on the magnetic CuO2 network.
