Entanglement propagation in thermalization of an isolated quantum system

We study dynamics of entanglement in the thermalization process of an isolated quantum many-body system. We propose a simple setup for measuring the propagation speed of entanglement entropy (EE) in numerical simulations and apply it to the integrable/non-integrable spin models in 1D - the transverse Ising (TI) model, the chaotic Ising (CI) model, and the extended chaotic Ising (ECI) model. We find that two distinct time-scales $t^\ast$ and $t_{\rm {diff}}$ arise in the dynamics of EE in the thermalization process: the former represents the time-scale for the saturation of EE and the latter characterizes spreading of EE over the entire system. Evaluating the propagation speed of entanglement from $t_{\rm diff}$, we find that entanglement propagates ballistically with a constant velocity irrespective of the integrability of the model. The propagation speed of entanglement is found to coincide with the maximum group velocity of quasi-particle excitations in the TI model. We also evaluate the propagation speed of entanglement by mutual information and find the characteristic time-scale $t_{\mathrm{MI}}$. We show that the propagation speeds of entanglement evaluated by $t_{\mathrm{MI}}$ and $t_{\rm {diff}}$ agree well. We discuss the condition for thermalization based on the numerical results and propose that scrambling of the entire system has to take place before saturation of EE for thermalization.

Geometrical Quantum Chemical Engine

We propose a geometrical engine undergoing an adiabatic (Thouless) pumping process for a small system connected to external isothermal reservoirs with the control of electrochemical potentials of the reservoirs and one parameter in the system Hamiltonian. Thanks to the geometrical nature of this process, the entropy production is characterized by the geometric metric tensor which is connected to the Fisher information and the Hessian of the density matrix in a nonequilibrium steady state. The existence of an inequality between the thermodynamic length and entropy production is established. We also establish that the work done on this system is characterized by a vector potential and is equivalent to the thermodynamic flux. To characterize the engine, we the introduce effective efficiency as the relation between the work and entropy production. Through the theoretical analysis of the quantum master equation for the Anderson model of a quantum dot within the wide-band approximation, we illustrate the explicit values of the work, thermodynamic length, and effective efficiency of the engine as functions of the phase difference of the externally controlled electrochemical potentials.

Passive verification protocol for thermal graph states

Graph states are entangled resource states for universal measurement-based quantum computation. Although matter qubits such as superconducting circuits and trapped ions are promising candidates to generate graph states, it is technologically hard to entangle a large number of them due to several types of noise. Since they must be sufficiently cooled to maintain their quantum properties, thermal noise is one of major ones. In this paper, we show that for any temperature $T$, the fidelity $\langle G|ρ_T|G\rangle$ between an ideal graph state $|G\rangle$ at zero temperature and a thermal graph state $ρ_T$, which is a graph state at temperature $T$, can be efficiently estimated by using only one measurement setting. A remarkable property of our protocol is that it is passive, while existing protocols are active, namely they switch between at least two measurement settings. Since thermal noise is equivalent to an independent phase-flip error, our estimation protocol also works for that error. By generalizing our protocol to hypergraph states, we apply our protocol to the quantum-computational-supremacy demonstration with instantaneous quantum polynomial time circuits. Our results should make the characterization of entangled matter qubits extremely feasible under thermal noise.

Kink Crystalline Condensate and Multi-kink Solution in Holographic Superconductor

The theory of superconductivity can be divided into two groups depending on whether it has multi-kink solutions. For example, the BCS theory and the Gross-Neveu model have metastable multi-kink solutions whereas the conventional Ginzburg-Landau theory without higher-derivative interactions does not have any multi-kink solutions. In this paper, we systematically examine the solutions of the holographic superconductor model to find out which group the model falls into. We show that the holographic superconductor model has metastable multi-kink solutions. In this sense, we find that the holographic superconductor model falls into the category of the BCS theory and the Gross-Neveu model. We also find that the holographic superconductor model has kink crystalline condensates which are well-fitted by the Jacobi elliptic functions.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in a superconducting ring with magnetic fields: Phase diagram and the first-order phase transitions

We find the angular Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states (or the twisted kink crystals) in which a phase and an amplitude of a pair potential modulate simultaneously in a quasi-onedimensional superconducting ring with a static Zeeman magnetic field applied on the ring and static Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux penetrating the ring. The superconducting ring with magnetic flux produces a persistent current, whereas the Zeeman split of Fermi energy results in the spatial modulation of the pair potential. We show that these two magnetic fields stabilize the FFLO phase in a large parameter region of the magnetic fields. We further draw the phase diagram with the two kinds of first-order phase transitions; one corresponds to phase slips separating the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux, and the other separates the number of peaks of the pair amplitude for the Zeeman magnetic field.

Analytical expression of geometrical pumping for a quantum dot based on quantum master equation

We analytically investigate a non-equilibrium quantum pumping for a single quantum dot connected to external leads on the basis of the quantum master equation (QME). We show that the Coulomb interaction associated with the spin effect in the dot induces the Berry-like phase in the parameter space and this phase results in the excess charge transfer for the cyclic modulation of parameters in leads. We obtain an analytical expression of the curvature of the phase and that for the pumped currents.

Geometrical pumping in spin coupled double quantum dots

We analytically investigate the non-equilibrium pumping for a double quantum dots system on the basis of the quantum master equation (QME), where the double quantum dots are connected to two external leads by the spin coupling. Each of leads has two tunable parameters, temperature and chemical potential. Using QME formalism, we obtain an analytical expression of the Berry-like phase for eigenstate of the QME in the parameter space. We show that the Berry-like curvature is non zero in the whole region in the parameter space. We also show that the Berry-like curvature vanishes in the case of single quantum dot and the case of isolated two dots.

Interaction effects in Aharonov-Bohm-Kondo Rings

We study the conductance through an Aharonov-Bohm ring, containing a quantum dot in the Kondo regime in one arm, at finite temperature and arbitrary electronic density. We develop a general method for this calculation based on changing basis to the screening and non-screening channels. We show that an unusual term appears in the conductance, involving the connected 4-point Green's function of the conduction electrons. However, this term and terms quadratic in the ${\rm T}$-matrix can be eliminated at sufficiently low temperatures, leading to an expression for the conductance linear in the Kondo T-matrix. Explicit results are given for temperatures high compared to the Kondo temperature.

Fermionic solutions of chiral Gross-Neveu and Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems in nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy

The chiral Gross-Neveu model or equivalently the linearized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation has been mapped to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy in the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur formalism by Correa, Dunne and Plyushchay. We derive the general expression for exact fermionic solutions for all gap functions in the arbitrary order of the NLS hierarchy. We also find that the energy spectrum of the n-th NLS hierarchy generally has n+1 gaps. As an illustration, we present the self-consistent two-complex-kink solution with four real parameters and two fermion bound states. The two kinks can be placed at any position and have phase shifts. When the two kinks are well separated, the fermion bound states are localized around each kink in most parameter region. When two kinks with phase shifts close to each other are placed at distance as short as possible, the both fermion bound states have two peaks at the two kinks, i.e., the delocalization of the bound states occurs.

Spin imbalance effect on Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrel state

We study spin imbalance effects on the Larkin-Ovchinikov-Fulde-Ferrel (LOFF) state relevant for superconductors under a strong magnetic field and spin polarized ultracold Fermi gas. We obtain the exact solution for the condensates with arbitrary spin imbalance and the fermion spectrum perturbatively in the presence of small spin imbalance. We also obtain fermion zero mode exactly without perturbation.

Scaling analysis of Kondo screening cloud in a mesoscopic ring with an embedded quantum dot

The Kondo effect is theoretically studied in a quantum dot embedded in a mesoscopic ring. The ring is connected to two external leads, which enables the transport measurement. Using the "poor man's" scaling method, we obtain analytical expressions of the Kondo temperature T_K as a function of the Aharonov-Bohm phase ϕby the magnetic flux penetrating the ring. In this Kondo problem, there are two characteristic lengths. One is the screening length of the charge fluctuation, L_c=\hbar v_F/ |ε_0|, where v_F is the Fermi velocity and ε_0 is the energy level in the quantum dot. The other is the screening length of spin fluctuation, i.e., size of Kondo screening cloud, L_K=\hbar v_F/ T_K. We obtain different expressions of T_K(ϕ) for (i) L_c \ll L_K \ll L, (ii) L_c \ll L \ll L_K, and (iii) L \ll L_c \ll L_K, where L is the size of the ring. T_K is markedly modulated by ϕin cases (ii) and (iii), whereas it hardly depends on ϕin case (i). We also derive logarithmic corrections to the conductance at temperature T\gg T_K and an analytical expression of the conductance at T\ll T_K, on the basis of the scaling analysis.
