Non-invertible symmetries in axion electrodynamics

We study non-invertible global symmetries in $(3+1)$-dimensional axion electrodynamics with a massless axion and a massless photon. In addition to a previously known non-invertible 0-form shift symmetry of the axion, we find a non-invertible 1-form symmetry associated with the equation of motion for the photon. Correlation functions of non-invertible symmetry defects lead to invertible 1- and 2-form symmetry defects associated with Bianchi identities for the axion and photon. In terms of the correlation functions, we discuss several phenomena for extended objects, such as induced fractional electric charges on axionic domain walls and fractional axionic operators on intersection points of magnetic flux tubes from the viewpoint of global symmetries.

Global 3-group symmetry and 't Hooft anomalies in axion electrodynamics

We investigate a higher-group structure of massless axion electrodynamics in $(3+1)$ dimensions. By using the background gauging method, we show that the higher-form symmetries necessarily have a global semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, and exhibit 't Hooft anomalies of the 3-group. In particular, we find a cubic mixed 't Hooft anomaly between 0-form and 1-form symmetries, which is specific to the higher-group structure.

Counting Nambu-Goldstone modes of higher-form global symmetries

We discuss the counting of Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes associated with the spontaneous breaking of higher-form global symmetries. Effective field theories of NG modes are developed based on symmetry breaking patterns, using a generalized coset construction for higher-form symmetries. We derive a formula of the number of gapless NG modes, which involves expectation values of the commutators of conserved charges, possibly of different degrees.

Emergent discrete 3-form symmetry and domain walls

We show that axion models with the domain wall number $k$ in $(3+1)$ dimensions, i.e., periodic scalar field theories admitting $k$ axion domain walls, exhibit an emergent ${\mathbb Z}_k$ 3-form symmetry for $k >1$ in addition to a conventional ${\mathbb Z}_k$ 0-form symmetry. The emergent 3-form symmetry is explicitly shown by establishing a low-energy dual transformation between the scalar field theory and a 3-form gauge theory. We further argue that the emergent 3-form symmetry is spontaneously broken, and the breaking pattern is so-called the type-B spontaneous symmetry breaking. We discuss similar and different points between the phase admitting the domain walls and topologically ordered phases.

From 3d dualities to hadron physics

When one of the space-time dimension is compactified on $S^1$, the QCD exhibits the chiral phase transition at some critical radius. When we further turn on a background $θ$ term which depends on the $S^1$ compactified coordinate, a topological ordered phase appears at low energy via the winding of $θ$. We discuss what kind of theories can describe the physics near the critical point by requiring the matching of topological field theories in the infrared. As one of the possibilities, we propose a scenario where the $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons form a $U(N_f)$ gauge theory near the critical point. In the phase where the chiral symmetry is restored, they become the dual gauge boson of the gluon related by the level-rank duality between the three dimensional gauge theories, $SU(N)_{N_f}$ and $U(N_f)_{-N}$.

Higher-form symmetries and 3-group in axion electrodynamics

We study higher-form symmetries in a low-energy effective theory of a massless axion coupled with a photon in $(3+1)$ dimensions. It is shown that the higher-form symmetries of this system are accompanied by a semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, which can be found by the correlation functions of symmetry generators of the higher-form symmetries. We argue that the Witten effect and anomalous Hall effect in the axion electrodynamics can be described in terms of 3-group transformations.

Abelian tensor hierarchy in 4D ${\cal N}=1$ conformal supergravity

We consider Abelian tensor hierarchy in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in the conformal superspace formalism, where the so-called covariant approach is used to antisymmetric tensor fields. We introduce $p$-form gauge superfields as superforms in the conformal superspace. We solve the Bianchi identities under the constraints for the superforms. As a result, each of form fields is expressed by a single gauge invariant superfield. The action of superforms is shown with the invariant superfields. We also show the relation between the superspace formalism and the superconformal tensor calculus.
